McCain For 'Marriage Between Passionate Females'

Posted: Tuesday, March 27, 2007 10:01 PM by Countdown

...at least that's what his MySpace said for a brief time today...

The site was hacked over a breach of netiquette by McCain's web people, who were using a free page template without giving credit (that's almost stealing!), and "hotlinking" images from the designer's site, using his bandwidth (that sorta is stealing!).

The 'hacker' tells his tale here.

You see, John McCain's people commandeered my world-renowned MySpace design template and did a few things wrong:

  1. They did not credit me for the template, even though the template explicitly requested credit.
  2. They used my own unmodified imagery, specifically for the "Contacting John McCain" table.
  3. As if #2 wasn't bad enough, the McCain crew is actually pulling their image directly from my server on each page load. So every time someone visits the McCain MySpace page, my bandwidth is being used to deliver part of the page! Bad McCain!

So...

Numerous people have written me over the last few weeks to tell me that McCain has been using my code, but up until I realized he was pulling images from my server, I didn't really care. A lot of celebrities including Ryan "Van Wilder" Reynolds and the beautiful Nelly Furtado use my code and I'm totally cool with it.

But then I read the article in today's Newsweek about how politicians are all setting up MySpace pages in order to "connect" with younger audiences. McCain's MySpace page is listed, as are the pages from several other candidates. I think the idea of politicians setting up MySpace pages and pretending to actually use them is a bit disingenuous, so I figured it was time to play a little prank on Johnny Mac.

Don't forget to Vote!!

HA HA Go Jonny Mac! That is great! At first I was somewhat pleased to see the Impact space on My Space. I am still somewhat new to having relialble internet service but have been enjoying my space. But I am sad to say that it seems that the candidates are using it the same old way. Every ten minutes you get a blog from Barack and Hillary's is kind of a joke. The way her friends connect was set up was lame. I am still reserving judgement on some of the others. But I guess I was hoping for something a little more relavent out of them. And not just another avenue for them to beg cash but to maybe find out what people are really thinking and what issues are truely important to people.
Ha! Be nice to the Internets, or the Internets will bite you back!
We have discussed McCain in earlier blogs. The man has lost it. He is not the same straight talk guy he was a few years back. I don't know what has happened to him. Either he fooled us back when he appeared to be a maverick willing to take on anyone including his own party, or something traumatic has happened impacting his ability to fight the right fights. Although I will always honor his service to this country as a prisoner during Vietnam he has kissed Bush's rear to many times over the last several years and is supporting the Iraq war. This is all I need to know to eliminate him from any thought of him becoming president. The breach of netiquette by his people noted in this story just confirms McCain has been buddies with Bush far too long.
Keith: Hannity's selection as Worst Person of the Day, Week, Month whatever is right on. Unlike Limbaugh and O'Reilly who may have an excuse for being idiots because of some serious inbred illness they cannot control, Hannity knows exactly what he is doing in order to make those $$$$$$$. He started out quite conservative but has learned like Ann Coulter that the more controversy you stir up the more attention you get and the more $$$$$ you can make by way of books, etc. This places Hannity even lower in the dung heap than the others. He and Coulter are about on the same level of s---. His claim that the dems are legislating defeat in Iraq is exactly the kind of BS he knows will get him attention. Even more unfortunate is that there are people in this country who listen to this guy. These are the same people who think those Sunday morning money-grabbing preachers are going to somehow show them the way to the gates of heaven. These are also the same people who would have been the first to be swayed by the nazi rhetoric and to volunteer to join the Gestapo. The whole time Hannity is laughing all the way to the bank.
I used to respect him as well, CA, but he's sold his soul to the wannabe president devil.
Scott: You are so right and it has been so disappointing and frustrating to watch the heart and soul being ripped from this guy. I would really like to sit down across from him,, no bullshit, and ask him just what the heck happened to you John.
It is a complete (and potentially libelous) mischaracterization to imply that Mike of Newsvine somehow "hacked" McCain's MySpace page. He did nothing of the sort. To the best of my knowledge, Mike has neither the ability nor the inclination to alter any code on McCain's site. The template on McCain's page was hotlinking an image that was hosted on Mike's server. Mike has complete ownership of that image, and is free to do whatever he wishes with it. The fact that McCain's people chose to hotlink to an image that they do not own, and had no right to display, is entirely their own fault and their own problem.
I lost all respect for McCain after he cozied up to the bushies after Rove smeared his family and service record during the 2000 Repub primary in South Carolina. Blind ambition is a dangerous thing.
I'm not sure what message Mr. McCain is trying to send to the American voter. Is he a progressive who is atune with the wants and needs of our current era, or is he a conservasaurus who is sticking to his party's position no matter how unpopular it is with the American people? I think the republicans who run in 08 are going to have a hell of a time trying to convince us that they are genuine, and they are testing the internet waters to determine if it can be a safe place to campaign. With all of us perching hear ready to squawk and allert the masses when we hear a hypocritical statement, perhaps those with poor intentions will be afraid to stand against us, or perhaps they will just learn how to hide the truth from us like the current administration was able to a meer 2.5 years ago. I think we're in trouble.
I completly agree with the guy from Alabama Hannity is a big jerk.
Ah! The old two wrongs make a right reaction. McCain stole my copyrighted material, so I will libel him in return. Morons.
Geoff Trowbridge, "Hacking" is more of a general term in this case (which Mike from Newsvine himself uses to describe what he did), but you're right, he did not alter the code on McCain's page, he altered his own image on his own server, to which the McCain site was hotlinking. He did nothing even approaching illegal.
You would think this is the type of thing that the "old" McCain would have laughed at and gone around talking about to every media outlet that would listen (it still could be a publicity stunt). No big deal, his web people screwed up and got pinged for it.. sounds to me like everyone got a lot of publicity and nobody got hurt.
Forget the hacking and the code or anything to do with the MySpace page. Who cares. This is all mote to the bigger question of McCain's candidacy. He has lost it. He no longer has any independence or fervor for a good fight for what's right (and I don't mean the political right). Joe Friday is correct. The day he cuddled up to Bush after Bush ran that dirty campaign against him, and his wife, in SC, is the day many of us lost all respect for him. His long-standing support for the Iraq war and his desire to escalate it, is another nail in his coffin. Ron from Tarpon Springs is right too but is too kind. Hannity is a jerk but I have a much better selection of words I won't use here to describe him.
the time for change is now. tell me who is better then this? we need a real american to run for prez. who is more lincon then john.
Hey, Kevin, can you please make a prudent, thoughtful comment instead of resorting to name calling. We in Colorado should be an elevated populace, both literally and emotionally, so save the mud-slinging for those in the lower states of mind.
I thought most politicians were against Myspace b/c it is a "haven for sexual predators". I guess its ok when you're looking for a vote...
Mr. McCain was doing well when he was expressing his opposition to torture of prisoners in Guantanamo or anywhere else. But something happened. Suddenly he supported the President's political prisoner policy (which, does, by the way, includes torture) as if the torture had somehow disappeared. After that it's all been downhill. In my opinion the leadership of the Republican party promised him something he must desperately be in need of to make him be quiet and become a Bush "yes man"
My first reaction when I heard this was to be bothered by it. There is enough trash talk in politics, and to "punk" a candidate is to further lower the tone of the national conversation. Then I realized that the image exists on the newsvine site and I changed my mind. That's fair game. This isn't hacking. This is an amusing way to point out to someone that they are inappropriatly appropriating resources (quick, W, say that 3 times). And its so over the top funny no one will be fooled into thinking its legit. And you are all right, Sen. McCain has lost the "straight talk" quality that made him appealing, and Sean Hannity is beneath contempt.
will someone please impeach bush!!!!!!
Ah, the internet. A post-modern answer to the six-shooter even Sam Colt would be proud of. Nice work, Mike. :)
that is awesome...and good to see
What is a funny little story has some how turned into republican and Bush bashing. I am wondering though about the rhetoric concerning Bush's unpopular policy in Iraq. As unpopular as that policy is, the dems have been moving forward on their policy, yet the the job approval rating for congress is lower then the presidents job approval rating. It's ok though, I'm sure the congress rating is based solely on republicans performance, not the majority dems.
LOL What two wrongs Kevin from CO? Welcome to the net. We police ourselves. This is what we call an appropriate slap on the wrist for misbehaving. If you want to go hide in a more litigious neck of the woods, stay clear of the computer. 'Morons' are punished here.
C A - you're right. McCain's suddenly got the smell of kiss-a$$ about him. He, and his campaign, were nothing like this in the previous prez tryouts. I am not surprised that his support base is so much less this time around. Maybey he was fooling us once the first time around, but he's obviously not fooling us this time.
Let me tell you my thinking on this. If you disagree that is fine. Most of you on these blogs are intelligent people who study the issues and make very wise and detailed comments regarding people like McCain, Bush and the current presidential candidates. For example, Geoff Trowbrifdge from IN. whether you agree or not made a very comprehensive study and response on this MySpace page issue. And although I am not in any way calling the average American ignorant or uninformed, the average American voter is ignorant and uninformed about the issues. They vote on emotion. Many voting today can't even tell you who the first president of the United States was. So while we become engrossed and angry in discussions about details, like the MySpace page issue or the House bill to get the troops home, the avergae voter will be swayed by how the bigger picture is twisted by these people. We all know that many bills Congress passes have spending issues tied to them. Yet the average American voter will hear, and listen too, the rhetoric as to how the dems simply wanted a wasteful 20 billion dollar spending package and therefore decided to tie it into the same bill that calls for the withdrawal of troops. I could go on the street tomorrow and tell your average voter that the only way some dems would vote for the troop withdrawl bill is if they could have their 75 million to provide storage for their peanuts in Georgia, or their 25 million for their spinach farmers, and they would believe me. The point I am trying to make is that many of you provide excellent detailed arguements about this government, past and current administrations while also hoping that we can find ourselves a better president and administration to run this country. And legitimately so. But I am telling you, the winner's of future elections are going to be elected by that average American voter who votes on emotion and who could care less about the MySpace page. If we want a democrat or independent in office we had better learn to play these politics as well as the republicans. So far we are not doing so good. If I were a dem in Congress I would have insisted on a stand alone bill to withdrawal our troops from Iraq. The average American voter would have respected that, and remembered that on voting day. There would have been no room for someone to twist what it is I wanted. The American people don't say get us out of Iraq, but oh, were not that serious unless you also supply each of our neghborhoods with 50 million dollars. They say get us the hell out of Iraq, period. And they don't say oh my, John McCain's people stole some shit off the internet. They say John McCain is for the Iraq war or John McCain is friends with Bush, or John McCain is a Vietnam War hero. I am sick and tired of this administration and its lies and arrogant atitude. I am also getting sick and tired of democrats acting like weasels and agreeing to pin shit on a bill that has no business being there. I am am sick and tired of the dems not learning how to play the game that the republicans know how to play so well (the use of generalized labels and attacks against their opponents while keeping the American public ignorant about details because they know the average Amercian voter could care less about the details when entering that voting machine). And then the dems bitch because they lose an election to the likes of G. Bush. He had the dems number from the get go and the current republicans have the same number. If they had anyone to run with some semblance of decency (not ruined by this administration) they would be kicking democrtic ass right now. Maybe they are, look at the polls comparing dems with Guillani. We did have a recent democratic presdient, for two terms. But that guy knew how to play the game on how the American voter votes. The current dems better take lessons from the boy from Hope, Arkansas or they are dead meat in the future. Screw MySpace page. Screw the 20 billion spending package on the Troop withdrawal Bill. Screw Hannity's outrageous statement the dems are legitmizing defeat in Iraq. We had better get our shit together folks.
Kevin, Golden, Co - I don't think I follow your short train of thought. The McCain campaign workers failed to give credit where credit is due - and the page's author is libelous - how??
Kevin Golden, CO: Are you upset about Johnny "Da Clown" Mac getting played or his statement being false. Just when you and your fiance Todd thought you had JCM's blessings.
McCain has lost most of the consevative support as well as any chance with the moderates in this country. God bless him for his service, but it's more than his service to this country that is at stake. If he were elected President of the United States of America he would fall into corporate hands, and we all now where there botton line is. Sorry McCain you will not get my vote.
I agree with: Geoff Trowbridge, Elkhart, IN not a "hacker" but in the right place at the right time. McCain's team should fire the web designer right away! Who ever put that together could have simple "right clicked" and saved the graphic file to their server. STUPID! I Love it!
To expound on Geoff Trowbridge's earlier comment: In the sense that the word "hack" connotes "intrusion" (illegal or other), his page was not "hacked". His staff used an image from another site without complying with that site's terms of use, so that site's staff reacted based on the thinking: "if you are going to steal from us, then we are going to exercise our ability to dictate what you steal, hopefully embarassing you, and discouraging you from doing so again." In this light, I think this was a relatively good-natured move on their part, because there are certainly images they could have substituted that would have been much more embarassing than that message. In the sense that the word "hack" means "a clever practical joke", he was indeed hacked, but these shades of meaning are lost on the uninitiated. CNN was more on-target with their use of the word "Punk'd". At least the MTV generation knows what that means. -=-=-=- As for the political side of this discussion, it's hard to figure what you are all on about, because anyone with a nickel worth of smarts should be able to see that McCain is the only living Republican with a mote of credibility outside the enclave. He has lived the nightmare, and he has lived the dream. Relatively speaking, I trust him to lead responsibly.
CatyZ wrote 'HA HA Go Jonny Mac! That is great! ..." Do you know who Jonny Mac is ..? Pay attention , you dope.. :)
What do you mean "lost it", he NEVER HAD it! Read the cover story, "Be Afraid of President McCain" on "Reason" magazine this month. If you belive in any level of individual freedom you will see that this guy is not for you.
Here's how it should go: Someone tells joke, people either laugh or not, everyone moves on. At the end of the day IT IS STILL A JOKE! Relax and vote.
I am disappointed with Mr. McCain, he was one of the few elected officials I respected. I am glad to say that Senator Chuck Hagel has been added to the list of few. I am not interested in political parties just in Americans who are interested in putting America/Americans 1st. I am hurt and angry with the thought of our Federal Prosecutors being used to entrap/destroy individual lives based on the individuals party affiliation. Who/What has become of America?

is he seriously 70? he looks good enough to eat.
Hello ALL, This Senator is really out of it, and I am wondering how the people of Arizona had voted for him. He may have been an American hero in the past but now he is a war monger without useful agenda for the country. He supports the war in Iraq in my opinion for one reason only in that oil corporations and the military complex have been making huge profits at the expense of the underlying population. That is, he is a narrow-minded senator. His recent remark is that he can walk in Baghdad freely, a situation reflecting the success of the surge plan. Yet our soldiers are shown on TVs carrying weapons and running around trying to defend themselves from the enemy fire. I remember one time he gve an opinion about the Iraqi war, given he did not know the geography of that country. He was thinking that the Kurds were in the south of Iraq and the Shia were in the north. I am sure now he has realized that he was wrong. It does not surprise me if his priorities are either in a reverse order or contradictory. The calamity is if he runs with Senator Joseph Lieberman and will win the next election. At that point in time, all of us will fight for looting oil everywhere in the world under the pretexts of national security and democract. Many Thanks
It's just so sad that this is the guy Arizona gave us to replace Barry Goldwater.
Congress did not fail to send a bill that supports our troups. It's now time for the Bush to pass it
Let me guess... You who sound so hurt by McCain are NOT registered Repubs or Indies. My guess is either Dem or Green Party (Since Red is frowned upon.) If anyone has ever noticed,, McCain has not changed. He has always been a political chameleon, just like Hillary. They listen to see which way the wind blows- They watch to see how the tide is flowing, and they go with it. Him being a "Maverick" was him trying to bootlick the Dems, while holding his place in Repub ranks. His riding on the coattails of the blogger in this case is a perfect example of how unoriginal he really is.
I think it is funny what happened to McCain's MySpace page. He can afford his own design and to host his own images. Personally, I like President Bush! I think you liberal "pinheads" have a lot to learn about the Iraq war! I have worked with many of the soldiers who have been over to Iraq from all over the USA and they tell me on a regular basis that things are improving. They have told me on many occassions that we should stay there and finish the job and that we should not specify a timetable as to when we will leave. Otherwise, the insurgent terrorist bastards will just wait us out! then all of our soldiers will have died in vain. These are their words not mine so take heed to what they have said! Thank GOD our country and our Military is not ran by the spineless liberal "piles of shit" (me excluded)who have been sounding off in this blog. I would rather have O'Reilly and Hannity over to my house than that worthless Liberal Left Winged, mindless old "kool aid" drinking Nancy P.
By the way he graduated 894th out of a class of 899 from the Naval Acadamy and most of the post POW jobs he got he did'nt qualify for (i.e. National War College, commanding an air squadron). Daddy got him those jobs for which his rank was unqualified. What a "maverick"!
Sean Hannity is the Greatest American.
Fred in SC is soooo correct.
Democrats Are Murdering Our Troops - think about it, if we win the war, the republicans win - so the Dems must MUST sabotage the war. Bush is a true hero to stand up despite public pressure and political sabotage. The whole world hates us becuase of the Democrats trashing our own government (if the world hates us, they hate bush = Dems WIN another one). Why can't the rest of America see this? Becuase they buy the pulp garbage spit out by MSNBC and the major news networks. Think for yourself people. We ARE better off, but the dems are killing our troops so they can take power.
McCain is a has been. He has been losing it for some time and it is gone. I would worry about agendas at the top of Pelosi's list to take away freedoms from us one by one. Worry about the bill about to pass that requires us to have our children have STD shots before going to school. Worry about the disregard that the liberal faction has to take away parents ability to govern their children. They want the government to be able to decide what will happen with our children...not us, the parents!! What else are they going to do? What next?...We are like lobsters in a pot on a stove. Right now the water is nice and warm. Soon they will cook us and have us for dinner...and we arent paying attention. The Liberals like the fact that all we are talking about is Bush and the war....get over it. Yes, the war is stupid...but don't be fooled by what the democrats are NOT saying!!!! They want what they are doing to fly under the radar. Take a look at some of the bills that are on the desk waiting to be passed. Just because they are pointing a finger, doesn't make them any less guilty for crimes they commit to get to the house and senate or any other political office. If we want to make a difference, stop complaining and put people in office who have a good moral character!!!
Hannity has always been one of those guys that shoves his opinions down your throst and has perfected the art of talking over, interrupting, or changing the question before anyone has had a chance to explain their point of view. He reminds me Rush, attacking DEMS and starting every sentence with.."They're at it again folks" and his twisted point of view come out loud and clear. The worst part about that is so many people want to believe his point of view, then go off speaking in tongue to others that believe and tell others to tune in. God help us all. Please watch c-span, witness the congressional meetings first hand, see and hear the people working for the lobbyist, and the people looking out for you. If you earn under $300,000 a year, you can not afford to be Republican!M.W.
The ironic thing is that this guy changes his position so often, that if the designer did not admit this was his work the story would be beliveable.
Is it obvious only to me? The liberal Democrats are the most angry, vindictive group in the country. They don't talk logic but instead trash anyone who dares to disagree with them. They scare me.
