Tom O'Neil: Go, Sanjaya! Gooooo!

Back off, Sanjaya-bashers! American Idol's newest superstar is really a master showman.

Who cares if he can't sing? Sanjaya's got another talent and knows how to sell it. Camp is one of the great traditions of showbiz and -- come on! -- it takes a genius to know how to pull it off. As those sassy strippers in the classic Broadway musical "Gypsy" say, "Ya gotta bump it with a trumpet, honey!"

You can't just do it a little. You've gotta go screaming (or screeching) over the top. The next time you see a photo of Sanjaya's pony Mohawk, think of Dame Edna's purple hair, or that rat's nest on Tiny Tim's head. Both of those guys have equally ghastly singing chops. (Uh-oh. You didn't know Dame Edna was a guy? Sorry!)

But it ain't about the singing. It's about putting on a show! And that spunky, little 17-year-old Liberace wannabe knows what he's doing and is doing it with shrewd surrender and abandon.

Frankly, let's be honest -- that's how Taylor Hicks WON last year. Justin Timberlake was right about him. Taylor "couldn't carry a tune in a bucket." Simon Cowell was correct, too, when he slammed Taylor for sounding like a drunk dad at a wedding while singing "Living for the City" the first time on the show.

But, then -- presto, change-o -- as soon as America started buying into Taylor's campy wiggle and screech, cheering him on, that unabashed hypocrite and celebrated cad started praising Taylor. Worse, Simon applauded Taylor for singing "Living for the City" the exact same, awful way during one of the finale shows.

Hey, where's the Let's-Get-Simon-Cowell-Lynch-Mob when you need it?

The real tragedy of Taylor's triumph as top winner last year was that Simon wasn't alone. Everybody cheered on that no-talent. Why? Because that's what we do to drunk dads acting silly at weddings? Yes, as long as they're macho cool.

Sanjaya is acting silly, too, but he's a sissy. So the bullies of America are beating up on him. Unfair! Rise up, oh, Sanjaya fans! Let's strike back! Keep voting for him! Dialing and dialing! And keep the faith!

Because Sanjaya is exactly what "American Idol" deserves. Early on in the TV season producers played up the worst acts as a way to pump ratings. Now it's their own fault that one deliciously, hilariously lousy act survived and is drumming up legions of fans the same way that camp rockers like Ozzy Osborne fill football stadiums -- because they know how to ENTERTAIN.

The lesson here: it's not always about the singing. It's about putting on a show. Taylor Hicks proved that last year without the pizzazz, the humor, the wink to the audience, the gutsy camp that Sanjaya knows instinctively.

All of THAT plus the hair!

Go, Sanjaya! Gooooo!

Go Sanjaya! I was listening to Howard Stern this morning and he said that Beth caught him on the phone calling in votes for Sanjaya. LOL. This show usually bores me and I find it very amusing to see America F with American Idol. I think Sanjaya is trying to be another Diana Ross just like Michael Jackson. Maybe Michael will invite him out to Never Never Land when the show is over. I'll bet 10 bucks next week Sanjaya comes out with one silver glove on his hand, high water pants and white socks.
Sorry Tom, the kid is awful, and he only makes it clear that the show is joke!
Tom, I've listened to Liberace...I've seen Liberace play...My father PLAYED with Liberace. Sanjayah is no Liberace.
You know thta bucket Taylor hicks can't carry a tune in? Sanjaya needs to put it on his ugly head and take a big whiff of his stinky sounding mouth. That one girl is going to win anyway...Lakisha, i thikn.
Great...it's blogs like this that take votes away from the GREAT talent like the Chris Snigh who was voted off tonight. Your blog is well written and passionate, but try explaining your views to the fro-patrol (as soon as they stop crying their eyes out).
Votefortheworst.com that has changed the votes for Sanjaya and I say good for it. American needs to see the un-reality of reality tv shows and realize that just being on AI is fame enough to propel them to superstardom. Case in point: Jennifer Huddson.
AI is just filler for me when KO goes to a commercial. Sanjaya is nothing more than a little Peter Pan who will never grow up. Sound familiar, aka Michael Jackson. They both can live in never never land together. Again, it is the judges who voted him through in the beginning. I bet KO has a better voice and can also dance. I guess a little humor is what we all need. Maybe after the keithies are over you could do a singing competition. (just kidding) I figured since eveyone else is getting into the act. To Tom, I think you need to get a life or a better set of earplugs.
Come on KO, give credit where credit is due - It's Howard Stern's doing. Go ahead and admit it. You'll feel better for doing so. --- PS I love Ozzy & Lemmy is god. www.votefortheworst.com
I think the "votefortheworst" is pathetic!!! These are real people that take this singing contest to heart. When they get to this point....the JOKES should be over. I'm disgusted by people who think all this is funny. All of you know that Sanjaya should not be in the top 12! If you don't like the show then STOP watching it!
While no-talents like Sanjaya are allowed to hang around - there is someone with talent that gets the boot. This kid is more nauseating than Taylor Hicks was last year (if you can imagine that!) Enough is enough already....time to GO!
Sanjaya is the worst singer. I can't believe he is still here. I will not be watching American Idol if he makes it to the Finals. I am not sure why he is still there. I am dissapointed in the whole show this year.
Haha. Great article. Sanjaya is a joke, that's why we love him! :-P
Someone is finally getting it right. The judges voted this clown in from the beginning, so it shows how this set of so-called set of judges have this show wired. If America isn't aware, this show has and continues to have the "fix" in play. The judges have an idea as to who they want to win, then gear the rest of the show and competitors around this theme. They will pick people across all races, regardless of talent, to keep viewership. My thought from the beginning of this season was "it's time for a hispanic to win", to keep that crowd involved. I doubt that any sane, free thinking, American believes that the most talented individuals have ever won any AI contest.
Tom, really, at least Taylor could sing, ok I agree he wasn't the best and he wasn't my choice but this little boy is making a fool of himself. People like Howard Stern in the long run are going to hurt this kid eswpecially after his 15 minutes of fame has dissolved..You can't convince me otherwise..I will give you this I have never been entertained by the awful singers, strangely I find it meanspirited..
Sanjaya got to go. To many better singers have allready been booted. He knows he should have been voted off. Be a man give the real talent a chance.
What a shame, what a shame, that someone like Sanjaya is still in the competition and someone who can really sing was voted off. If Sanjaya should win this competition... AI will go down the drain!!!!As Herman said a couple of weeks ago, this has become a voting competition not a singing competition!!! He should have been voted off the first week of the top 12....no, he should have never been in the top 12!!
Sanjay would be perfect in a Bollywood movie not as a winner of american idol. It is a singing competition and he should be voted off.
This is ridiculas, to keep somebody on that can't sing.Us people watch this show to see who's gonna be our next great singer."Who wants to watch the good singers get voted off left and right,"like the last couple weeks.Lets make this show honest. If I want to watch a comedy.I'll turn the station. It's okay at the beginning of the season. This is for real now.Sanjaya should of been gone weeks ago.He does'nt belong in the top 12.Come on American Idol!
Ok, so Sanjaya may not be the best but he does have talent...I'd love to see anyone of you try to sing just one note. When you open you're mouth then you would hear someone whose awful. Just because someone doesn't sound like Kelly Clarkson or Justin Timberlake doesn't mean they don't have talent. Again, he may not be AI material but he still has a good voice. Besides, AI was the type of show that was good when it started but it has run it's course. Beside Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and a few from last season, none of these contestants are even close to star quality. Some of them may have good voices but that doesn't mean I want to hear them when I turn on the radio.
Oh come on... Idol hasn't been that good for few years! Let's see, america voted in a guy who couldn't really move very much on stage, whos voice is mediocre, to a woman who can't sing standing up (only doubled over)and screechs, to a guy who with his stupid moves on stage and really thought he could sing! The kid who is prancing about and can't carry a tune will probably win..look at past history. I have given up on American Idol, I might tune in on the last two shows, but that is it.
I think Sanjaya is great. Onething we don't have to forget is he is only 17 and down the road there is no doubt that he will make a great singer. Com'on America lets give him a chance.
You are missing the point man, this is a singing competition and he is not a good singer. Regardless of any other characteristics, the ultimate judgement should be over whether he can sing or not and he can't. So continue with the bashing it's quite funny.
Simon says it's a singing competition, but that didn't stop him from slamming Jennifer Hudson -- arguably the most talented singer that has ever graced the show. So which side of Simon's face is right? The second one. Because it isn't a singing competition. It's an entertainment competition. And where entertainment is concerned, there is just no accounting for taste. If Sanjaya simply COULD NOT sing, he would not have made it onto the show to begin with. Many thousands didn't. Most of the rest were eliminated after the judges got an even better listen in Hollywood. He has some talent. It just isn't the same brand of talent that Melinda has. It's like watching Britney sell more albums than Aretha. It sucks, and it's a shame, but it is what it is. Put Sanjaya's talent next to Britney's, and they probably stack up pretty evenly. And I'm sorry, but I think he has equally as much talent as Peter Noone, who sang a hideous number a couple of weeks ago, and that Lulu, who was puke-awful as well. And did anyone other than me notice that Miss Ross was more than a little strained? Those three performances alone should be enough to convince most that Sanjaya could actually make it in showbiz. Then again, Justin Guarini should be enough to prove that he can't. As for Chris, he has no one other than his own "fanbase" to thank for getting voted off. A fundamentalist Christian, Sligh was criticized by one of the leaders at his Christian college, who said that the school was "dissapointed" in the "direction" of Chris's music. No coincidence that he gets voted off a week later. Some people hesitate not a moment to ruin everything for everybody by being self centered and greedy. Chris's song choices weren't anti-Christian, but because they were not pro-Christian, his people turned their backs on him at the behest of one of their leaders. I'm sure he'll be just fine and wish him all the best.
He is a good singer(not the best) and whether you like him or not he is more entertaining then most of the remaining contestants. The reason that some of the others that were "better voices" were voted off is that they didn't or couldn't get the fans of Idol excited...they were blah. When did we become a society that has to take everything to such a personal level tearing him down without mercy.......obviously young girls are going to love him..he is adorable.
Isn't it a coincidence that that the people that have been voted off the show have been a girl, then a guy, then a girl, then a guy? How do these votes work that keep it so perfectly in sync? If there wasn't this controversy over Sanjaya it would be over somebody else? Don't you think they know how he looks before he comes out on stage?! I just feel sorry for him and his family - I'm sure he never asked for all this negative publicity. He doesn't sing bad, he just doesn't sing as good as the rest, not that some of the other guys sing any better (Chris R. for example).
If you are thinking that Sanjaya remains on AI because he's a joke, he is NOT without singing talent and the bottom line is that he was chosen by 3 judges who (hopefully) thought he could sing. I personally think Sanjaya CAN sing, but he's sabotaging himself with how he looks versus any vocal talents he has. If he would just come out there and belt something out and forget how cute he is you just might hear vocals worth voting for along with the looks and charm young american girls are madly dialing in for.
I agree with CAC, it is not fair that people with some actual talent are going home while that clown Sanjaya slides through. The people voting for him know he is a ridiculous no-talent, yet they are maliciously trying to alter the outcome of the show. Thank God so many non-winners have gone on to have successful careers despite who won. Hopefully this time next year people will be saying "Sanjaya who?" as this year they are saying "Taylor who?"
If anybody thinks he's not being used, raise your hand. His parents ought to be horse whipped for not pulling him off the show, but I imagine all they are seeing is dollar signs and they are using their son to. I like most people in America would rather take a beating than listen to this kid sing, the cats on the back fence do a better job and no I don't go on AI because like most people I know I can't sing, but I know good music when I hear it and he does not make good music. I challange America to raise their IQ's and stop being led by the nose of Howard Stern And VFTW. Stop being one of the herd and be your own person with your own mind and use your own brain to tell you what is good music and what isn't.
Fed Up, Sanjaya can't sing a note. His sister, who got eliminated in the preliminary round, was the actual talent of the family. There were many people in that preliminary round who could sing better than Sanjaya any day. But yet, he got through, and ignorant people continue to vote him in. I noticed you left out Clay Aiken out of your list of talent - he is one of the most successful Idol alumni to date and he has an ACTUAL singing voice. Sanjaya would melt next to his powerful notes - and Clay has the two platinum and one gold album to prove it. Nobody will remember who Sanjaya is next year, unless he gets his own reality show - which is the only path he is suited for.
i'm so distraught this sanjaya dude is still on and i have to be tortured by his 'singing' another week. this is all the judges fault for keeping him in the top 12 in the frstplace and now he's like a cockroach infestation that cant be gotten rid of. wats the big deal about the hair, ok he has a mohawk, big frieking deal, if thats what captivates america well then we're very sad indeed.
sanjaha should have gone a long time ago, this is a singing competition and he honestly cant entertain, if just doing your hair a weird way is entertaining there must be alot of entertaining people out there. There are people who enjoy hearing good singers sing and not this embarrassing show sanjaha is putting on, and it is a shame that we have to lose some of those that we do enjoy listening too while he sits there and grins, i am totaly disappointed in the show this year
I believe that Sanjaya has great telant! How many young men at his age would have the guts to pull such a terrific stunt as wear his hair in front of millions of people, he is what we need in the entertainment industry, some one to make us laugh, even if he can't sing! Go Sanjaya!!!
sport players, singers ,students, professionals they all practised on what they do and they makes it perfect so,SANJAYA can be very good singer as well,by keep singing in AI.I'am sure every one of you knows that, especially the peoples who are now succesful on what they are doing (that include the people who are good in critizing people).
I love Sanjaya!! I can't help it! So shoot me!
I will agree about Clay Aiken, I didn't forget him I meant to include him...I'm actually a fan of Clay and think he was the best talent to come out of season two...I think he should have won. And for Sanjaya, He may not be star quality but if he couldn't sing a note he wouldn't have been selected by the judges in the first place.
The boy is awful! Don't blame it on age because there are alot of artists that were teenagers when they started that did not sound like this (i.e. Usher, Monica, Brandy, Chris Brown, Sammy, etc.) AI has become a popularity contest instead of a singing competition. Listen to things like pitch control tone, phrasing, range and say he can sing. I had a band director in high school that said, "If you cna't hear the note first, you can't play. The same thing goes for singing. If you can't hear it first, you can't sing it. Sanjaya must be deaf because his pitch is awful. You have to be able to hit notes right on target, not "slide" to them. That doesn't say much for his control either. Please america, quit playing and get serious. vote for the best singers and not just the ones that you like for whatever reason.
Love him or hate him, Sanjaya has charisma. He has learned the lesson of Madonna (albeit a bad one) early - reinvention. Viewers can't wait to see what he's going to do the next week and to see if he's going to be voted off. Compared to Sanjaya, everyone else on AI, talented or not, is plain, boring vanilla. If he weren't on this year's competition, who would REALLY care. Isn't everyone tired of Melinda Dolittle's sweet shoulder shrug by now?
Old Rupert is brilliant! Please let me explain? It isn't that Fox Noise has eaten my brain. And from circuses served up with baked whole-wheat grain I would gladly refrain -- but in vain. Though try as I might to evade inane pap, his monstrous creation's all over the map! Flick the remote through an entire lap -- It's still there! It's a trap! Tune in and watch "Idol"? I flatly refuse! Alas! Other channels report it as "news", while each morning's paper has last night's revues and who's whos. (Guess who spews?) Though I never watch "Idol" I know all the judges; I know who shows promise and who are just drudges, Who's a flash, or web trash, or who's carrying grudges; But what I cannot grasp is why all of this sludge is gobbled up faster than fudge is! Yep, Rupe is a genius! That much I can see, for "Idol" chatter is the talk of TV from morning to evening to hours quite wee -- And his perverse devising (or so I'm surmising): he gets advertising for FREE!
Someone said something about Sanjaya being Hispanic. I think he's of Indian descent, and I think it's the Indian community that is keeping him in the show. This might sound racist, but many people vote based on ethnicity or place of origin. An example was the little girl from Hawaii a couple of years back who made it to the final three despite getting slammed by the judges weekly. The radio and TV stations there would actually announce when it was time to vote for her, even before the show had aired on delay there!
AI needs to change the way they vote. Instead of voting for the singer you like, vote off the one you don't like. This one change will negate any efforts to swing the voting in favor of a particular entry. Most of us who watch the show can agree on who we don't want to advance even if we differ in who we want to win the show.
Who ever said life was fair?
I'm a newcomer to the whole AI thing; I'll admit that it's because Blake is from my town! And because my own BOSS auditioned (although he didn't make it). I've tuned in to the last few shows and freely participate in the "morning after" conversations around the water cooler at work. From the start I couldn't stand the acrimonious attitude of Simon--and now all this fuss over a kid who is having the time of his life!(Who also happens to be from my state, how about that!) Over the years hasn't it become obvious that AI itself is, like all "Reality TV", not REAL??? It's ALL entertainment on one level or another, there's always a story behind the scenes that we pretend to be SHOCKED at, and I'm just chuckling along. They all get publicity out of the thing. Just like any other story, there has to be a good guy, a bad guy, a conflict and a resolution. It's an entertainment formula, people. I don't mind Sanjaya being in the top--it's a barometer of how America is finally catching on to the machine that AI just IS. Put on your big girl panties and get over it if you don't like him. He's on TV and I'm not(neither are you!) Enjoy what you like. Tune out if you don't. It's a diversion, a fun break in our scary and uncertain world. Not REAL. You hang in there and have a blast, Sanjaya!
Yo the racist people of America, Sanjaya can definitely sing and he is prooving it every week in front of millions of audience. You can't "measure" a singing talent with some units (like ounces) and compare it with someone else's. One will like some tunes while the others may not like very much. The earlier AI winners were not the "best" talent America had. I am sure American always has better talent out there than the winner of AI. Only because Sanjaya is from a different race (as evident from his skin color and name), he is being singled out and subjected to insults. This happens in many places in this country, inspite we proclaim that we are non-racist. Let me tell you, we cannot tolerate someone from non-white (or black to some extenet because now they have kind of getting accepted). That is the basis of this whole Sanjaya thing ...
Come On America, Get With The Program. This years Idol is a joke, people are disgusted with this years show. How can Sanjaya still be here, and Stephanie gone?? The voting system should be changed, the judges should have the final say like Rock Star, America doesn't seem to get it right, anymore!!!
I certainly dont think that Sanjaya is the worst singer of them all. In the last show, some of them were singing so badly (and off tune) that my ears hurt. I dont think the judges are now even listening to him singing - they are so distracted by his looks and clothes. America - to judge a voice- for once listen to the singers by closing your eyes and not watching the show and u will be able to truly hear the quality of voice. And I THINK Sanjaya has it! Lakisha is of course the best and she really should win. But even if she does not - she will become famous anyway. Good luck to all of them.
Oh come on. You can measure someone's singing talent against someone else's. We do it all the time -- it's called musical preference. It's simply not enough to say that all music is relative because that's not true, either. You would be hard pressed to find anyone who thinks that Bob Dylan is a better singer than Stevie Wonder, even among hardcore Dylan fans who think that he is a deity. No one can prove that Sanjaya is being singled out because he is of a different race. The evidence shows that he is being singled out because he is on a season of Idol with two competitors who are running laps around everyone else, and he happens to be uniquely bad. Maybe he can sing, but he doesn't show it on t.v. If "we" (whatever that means) can't tolerate someone non-white, why is it that EVERYONE agrees that Lakisha and Melinda are way better than everyone else. And, it's not like they are light-skinned black or traditionally beautiful. They just sing better than everyone else.
Come on people!!! Don't take this reality television so seriously... I think Sanjaya is a cute kid with a positive smile and attitude. He is adorable and he is having fun and livens up the show this season. AI does not seem to have the magic like it has in past years. And frankly I think alot of talented people never even made it to appear in front of the judges so truly this is probably not a fair or accurate reflection of America's talented artists. But I enjoy watching it every week just the same. So,let Sanjaya have his fun and be a happy kid. Life's too short!
When you look at Sanjaya, you realize he is very shy. When he overcomes that in a few years, he can be a superstar. Sanjaya has a huge upside. That's why I voted for him.
As far as AI goes, its like this every year. Around and around and around they go, where they stop nobody knows LOL. Wanna play spin the contestants? LOL
Sanjaya won me over with the hair thing because it made me realize that yes, he's in on the joke, plans to ride the train as far as it takes him, and when it's over he'll relish his 15 min. of fame and tell the story to his grandkids someday. I'd be more worried about him if it appeared that he was taking it seriously.
