NBC/CBS Suspend Don Imus

Posted: Monday, April 09, 2007 7:02 PM by Countdown

STATEMENT FROM NBC NEWS

Beginning Monday, April 16, MSNBC will suspend simulcasting the syndicated "Imus in the Morning" radio program for two weeks. This comes after careful consideration in the days since his racist, abhorrent comments were made. Don Imus has expressed profound regret and embarrassment and has made a commitment to listen to all of those who have raised legitimate expressions of outrage. In addition, his dedication - in his words - to change the discourse on his program moving forward, has confirmed for us that this action is appropriate. Our future relationship with Imus is contingent on his ability to live up to his word.

The previously scheduled Imus radiothon in support of the Tomorrow's Children's Fund, the CJ Foundation for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome research and the Imus Ranch will air, as scheduled, this Thursday and Friday on MSNBC.

I have seen the Imus show in question, and heard the remarks and do think they were racist, also Imus does a lot of work with children so he should know the impact that words can have on others. In my opinion I do not think he should be fired! Some food for thought, this is not a planet of cookie cutter people! As long as there have been people of different color, nationality or religen on this planet there has been the kind of issues and there not going to go away! Weather Imus is fired or not is not the issue. He is human, and as a human beings and he made a mistake,so be it we all do, I think in some ways we are all racist or predjuditial in one way or another. forms at doctors offices ask what race you are! "I have Multipal sclorsis and cereabrial palzy" who will be recednized first myself or a public figure!" There will always differences in every race, class,or culture,he screwed up and aplagized, so be it.That's better the most palitions, but yet we still vot
Imus should not be fired for what he did. It may have been stupid, but to fire him would be like pouring a bucket of water on a candle. If they want to get rid of someone for being downright crude and offensive it should be people like Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Fred Savage, etc.
I was astounded that Keith Olbermann made comment last night about being asked by MSNBC executives to reserve judegement on the issue of the Imus blow-out. Upon hearing the news this weekend I looked forward to having Imus win the gold at the worst-person in the world contest this week. He deserves it, and the fact that Keith didn't have the fortitude to nominate him means that he does too. As a longtime viewer for the first time I find myself disappointed with the program.
i will not buy any product advertised on imus he should have been fired im white
I am dissapointed with most of these post, there is a old saying "don't shoot the messenger" why are we more concerned about Al Sharpton or Jessie Jackson being upset? by the way, those not in the black community an simply unaware, these men have been fighting rappers and comedians about the use of derogatory words for years, but money dictates different. Also the Over thirty in the Black community do think that Rapp has gone to far, as a matter of Fact the Women of Spellman University boycotted a rapp artist who was suppose to speak there because of his lyrics and video, but of course most of you wouldn't know that because it didn't make national news. There has been an ongoing campaigne call " taking back our music" in Essence magazine about how far rapp has gone and what it is doing to the community particulary Black women. I could go on and on but I won't, but before people start to make ill-informed judgment and excuses please no the facts and for heavens sake stop seeing an entire community through 1 prism, we are diverse and do not all think alike or speak alike and we don't all tolerate the music and words that has become way to mainstream.
Can we now please start reporting the real news and looking at the real issues in this country. I think at some level this has started a dialogue which needs to take place but the whole Imus/Sharton/Jackson garbage is ridiculous. The lead story on the evening news, are you kidding me? Our soldiers at war, Congress doing nothing, a President with his head stuck in the sand, millions without healthcare, a federal deficit spiralling out of control, violence in our cities, young people being shot and killed everyday..etc..etc. And this is the lead story on NBC Nightly News, Please!!
Stop playing favorites on what to worry about. Where are the Black Leaders now that the white guys were found not guilty? Seems there is and always enough to worry about on both sides. I have noticed that the Asian sector does not jump up and cry out for any and everything that could be misguided aginst them. We all need to know it falls on both sides and move on toward more togetherness and less over-media hype on the tiny issues of what is always likely to come up from time to time because people are different.
Where was the Duke LAX Perjury Hoax on the Countdown last night? Please do not tell me I missed it, given all of MSNBC's piling on of three VERY innocent people when the story first broke. If you heard any of the press conference delivered by these fine young men's attorneys yesterday, you may remember the contrast drawn between heroes and Cowards. I think we can add Keith to the second list, if he ducks that story and has the man who brought us Tawana Brawley on instead. It is your network and your credibility, do what you want with both, but please spare us the "we are not puppets of the P.C. Crazy Left" bit. I switched to Fox a long time ago, but thank you for continuing to vindicate my choice.
The comments made by Imus should not have happened. However, why just pick on Imus. A few months ago, Rosie O'Donald made a racial comment toward the Asian community, and no one made qualms about that. She pretended she was speaking Asian of some sort with oriental facial gests and saying the word Chink. My heart sank. I had not heard that racial slur since the 70s. If anything, Sharpton's and Jackson's should have defended other races as well. Asian community endured slavery in America, as well as an insult in the Japanese internment camps during World War II. “…In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred...” Martin Luther King, Jr.,. Jesus said, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone…" John 8:7. So how can Sharpton's and Jackson's defend their own race, when the young black generation is the one promoting racial injustice to their own community. Sharpton's and Jackson's cannot hide behind Martin Luther King, Jr., nor behind reverend collars. If we as American’s want to do away with racial comments, then we as Americans cannot be like parents who say the “F” word and expect the child not to say the “F” word. So punishing Imus does nothing because the racial slurs are coming from the black community. This tells the whole world, "What's good for the goose is good for the gander".
