Countdown Wednesday: MSNBC Pulls the Plug

If you're watching live, you'll see that we're in a breaking news situation and some of the order of the show segments and guests won't necessarily match up with the 'rundown' below...

Don Imus Fired: His MSNBC show cancelled, immediately, even before his suspension was to begin.

NBC Chairman Jeff Zucker and NBC News President Steve Capus say their reasoning is clear:  The cancellation comes after "ongoing discussions with a number of employees and employee groups," said Zucker. "We are the guardians of the good name of NBC News - each and every one of us," said Capus. The Reverend Al Sharpton, and Steve Capus join us.

Selective Outrage?
Imus is only one of a long list of radio personalities who make offensive racial remarks. Is the entire industry now on notice that this type of behavior will no longer be tolerated? The Reverend Jesse Jackson joins us.

Help Wanted:
Has the White House given up? The President wants a "War Czar" to oversee Iraq and Afghanistan. And reportedly they can't find any retired generals even willing to consider the job. But shouldn't the Commander-in-Chief be the "War Czar" anyway?

The Countdown I-Team: A Countdown special investigation blows the lid off the hydrogen car hyperbole that embarrassed President Bush. Now the White House is getting apologies from the CEO of Ford.

WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD
: ESPN.com gets slapped for a technical glitch in its fantasy baseball league software, Dick Morris believes the entire country is as racist as he is, and Billo is back, exploiting grieving families for his own twisted political agenda.

Idol Chatter
: Sanjaya lives, and the audience leaves. Princess Maria Milito is here to discuss the great American train wreck that is: American Idol.

Reverend Al Sharpton and Reverend Jesse Jackson. Perhaps they need to pick up their Bibles and read the parts about forgiveness again. Let he who is without sin......
Keith, you are the best thing that has happened to broadcast commentary since, well, Imus in his better days. But unless you are toadying, you are off-base in supporting his removal from your network. If what he said was so bad and NBC so moral, it shouldn't have taken a week to make this decision. You have interviewed Bill Maher. Don't you understand that if YOU are not next, you are certainly high on the list?
Yesterday my world changed.....and not for the better! Until then I begged for people to talk and forgive but in a twelve hour period I saw three Duke Lacrosse players vindicated on all charges and ten Rudgers Basketball players trying to make a difference and accept an olive branch from Imus. MSNBC never allowed the meeting to take place before making their decision based on greed alone.....it won over reason and hope. Now your entire network is boasting of making the right decision with numerous appearances by Sharpton and Jackson; the very same persons who called for the Duke Lacrosse team to be disbanded and put those three young men through pure hell. The Duke students lost their entire team and ability to attend the University of their choice. The ten Rudgers players still have a team and still have an uninterrupted college career at the school of their choice. Gee, doesn't take a mental giant to figure out which one is the best situation but Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson were there for both with their "Operation Get A Load Of Me Coalition" and I have heard not one utterance of an apology from either of them.......who's going to pay back the parents for the attorney bills of those young men? You can bet your sweet a$$ it won't be MSNBC or Sharpton or Jackson........I really loved your show Keith but when you boasted of being on board to let Imus go I was shocked. Then Obama took his position and destroyed my hope for a new direction......yes, yesterday was a sad day in my life and many others' lives. I wish you no ill will but you lost my loyalty and Obama lost my vote. Take care and be well.
No permanent good will come of the "firing" of Don Imus as we have been down this road many many times before. Here we are again, looking for the "quick fix", the scapegoat. A contrite and reformed Imus on the air is far more valuable to the situation than sweeping another person who had a lapse in judgment under the rug. While the comments were regrettable and unseemly, they have been completely overdone and Imus has been vilified to an extent not seen in recent memory. Let a renewed Imus back on the air and let's get on with the most important issues of the moment. He will bring the same determination and dedication he has shown in his charitable work to leadership in the struggle for civil and gender rights.
Hello out there...anyone recall LESTER HOLT?????? I have yet to hear anyone on NBC respond to the comments of Sharpton and Jackson that there are no African American anchors. It's great that Allison Stewart hosts her own show on MSNBC but Holt's duties go beyond hosting news entertainment shows such as being the co-host of Weekend Today. He has been anchoring the weekend edition of NBC Nightly News and may be named as the permanent anchor along with Campbell Brown. I'm still waiting for Jesse Jackson to respond directly to the question that has been asked of him many times over the past few days regarding Hymietown? Keith, please do not stop the drumbeat about the hypocrisy of Beck, O'Reilly, Limbaugh and the rest of the right wingnuts still broadcasting on the air.
It is a slippery slope, and a tough issue. but we really have to have better commentators than jackson and sharpton, both of whom have made awful antisemitic statements in the past. Let them get going on 'firing', or boycotting Coultergeist, Limboo,Savage, Beck, Hannity, Orally,... you get my drift. Dont crap out on us here Keith! Keep hammering that point, because that is the point. Rev Al should have gotten all pissed off because of Coulter's 'faggot' comment..........walk the walk and talk the talk, all of you... and for crying out loud: will everybody please STOP repeating the Imus remark already???? We all know what he said. so just tell the listeners and viewers that he said something outrageous. no need to repeat it over and over... last nite it was said at least 4 times,by KO, the revs, Capus, and well... you get it. if you want imus to be shut up --- then dont give any more power to his words!
When the Dixie Chicks were taken to task and boycotted for making critical comments about George Bush, liberals such as Keith Olberman rushed to the defense of free speech. If it was wrong to boycott or criticize the Dixie Chicks for attacking Bush, isn't it wrong to fire Imus? Aren't liberals in favor of totally free speech including opinions they disagree with? That is what liberals normally claim. I am happy to see Imus punished but it is too bad libs such as KO aren't consistent; either they oppose punitive actions for views they diasgree with, or they don't.
Keith, there are a lot of good points here. I was growing up in a suburb of Philadelphia during the Tawyna Brawley publicity stunt that Rev. Sharpton pulled. The Duke boys should undoubtedly have been part of your report. You did ask about the advertising dollars. You did mention Allison Stewart. Will you be able to talk about it with more force tonight? Is someone clipping your wings? I, for one, would like a greater civility in the airwaves, but someone needs to convince me that this is the start of it. It needs to start somewhere. Imus made a very good point. He said he needed to know where the line is. He's right. If the line has been drawn here, so be it. But we need proof that it has, or his firing will only be hypocritical and pointless. You need to have him on your show to talk about this.
Keith, your the best but why didn't you bring up the Duke Case and ask Rev. Jackson if he had an apology for that. That was certainly race based.
Hey guys, down where I come from, our blood runs deep orange, the national anthem is "Rocky Top" and all roads that don't lead to Neyland Stadium do lead to Thompson-Boling Arena. We aren't best pleased that in addition to using an offensive racial slur to describe the beautiful Lady Knights, Imus referred to our beautiful Lady Vols as "cute." Cute is a word one uses to refer to people like, for instance, my little niece. Free speech is one thing, but this sounds like Imus thinks he was offering a compliment. I'm not the sort of feminist type who quibbles about gender-specific language and all that, but "cute" was also offensive on a lesser scale.
I agree with the decision to dump Imus. I'm sure it was both a business and a matter of principle decision, but the right decision no matter how they got there. I could tell that Keith has really chomping at the bit to express his opinion!
IMUS INSULTED SUCCESSFUL WOMEN. These Women are athletes and scholars, something all parents should be proud of and our kids should strive for. Imus diminished all of this. This has nothing to do with free speech. Anyone who has the power with our public airways and government, has responsibility to never abuse it. He is only one of many that have gotten away away with it...until now. I congratulate MSNBC management for taking action. The American people are fed up with a submissive media. We want real news back. Keith is the only person I trust to keep it honest.
Bulletin: Straight from The Internets to you- Don Imus spotted on Manhattan street corner apologizing to passing pedestrians. Meanwhile, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson prepare their takeover of Imus' former morning slot on MSNBC, while the seat is still warm. More later...
You just made the comment on your countdown "Dick Morris believes the entire country is as racist as he is". You Olbermann should apologize and be fired for that. It is just as insulting to call someone a racist as it is to call someone a ho unless they have made hateful statements solely based on race.
I would like to use this blog to formally announce my candidacy for the position of War Czar. Having absolutey no military experience I feel I would do a totally incompetent job. However, like our Dictator in Chief I do love to take extended vacations. I also am very good at deleting emails. In other words, I'm a perfect fit for the job, where do I sign up?
Keith, You dissapointed me. I'm letting you go.
Pete Hamburg NY - I'm sure you will do a better job than anyone moron George W. Bush selects!!
Keith, I assume in the wake of the Imus story and your feelings about it, you will now focus your attention on getting Ice-T, actor on Law and Order: SVU, fired. How could his demeaning comments in his lyrics which consistently target black women go unpunished? The following is a sample of the cleanest, safest lyrics I could find. The title of the song is "Bitches 2" and this is just the chorus.... "Yo, how did he go out? He went out like a bitch! So ladies We ain't just talkin' bout you Cause some of you niggas Is bitches too!" Thanks Keith
I have been listening to Imus for over 30 years. When he says something I don't want to hear I change channel. I've had Sharpton and Jackson up to my eyeballs. I do not believe in kicking a man while he is down. You did that last night. And so I too bid you farewell as well as Imus!
Barb G, Albany NY - The Dixie Chicks stated they were "embarrassed George W. Bush was from Texas" while on tour. Don Imus calling young women "nappy headed hoes" does not even compare. Yes, both have "Freedom of Speech"; however, you are comparing apples to oranges in your analogy. The Dixie Chicks never used a racial slur against Bush. Imus crossed a line; and if it was his first offense, I believe the outcome would have been different. Imus has not only been warned multiple times, he went on air and made a personal pledge to NEVER use a racial slur on air again. The Dixie Chicks never crossed any racial lines; and in addition, I'd be embarrassed if I was from Bush's state too!!
I was extremely disappointed with Rev. Jesse Jackson's answers to Keith's very simple question. I think that a true leader is someone who takes the ones that are following him down the path to becoming a leader themself, not down the path that keep them as the follower throughout their lives. Jesse Jackson is no leader, he should take a leave of absence and figure out what he is really fighting for, then try and come back to lead others. He has had way too many chances to show the way to greatness and has failed just as many.
James, Miami, Florida - Keith made no such comment about Dick Morris; however, Dick is a "dick"!! He frequently appears on "The O'Reilly Factor" and spends his entire segment slinging insults at his former employers, President & Senator Clinton. O'Reilly, being the arrogant jerk he is, just laughs and laughs - oh how I feel the spirit of "fair and balanced" through my TV as it radiates throughout my home!! Dick Morris flat out lies about the Clintons because he hates them. He can hate anyone he wants; however, he does not have the right to lie, make fun of, or insult them based on his ever-so apparent hatred!!
Dan of Oklahoma...what have you been smoking? In your lengthy rant, you buried this message, addressed to Keith: "Someday someone who has the power to do something about it will come to the realization that you are prejudiced against Catholics. Of course, that type of hatred is still acceptable to you and the others like you who apparently make the rules by which the rest of us are expected to live, but your ignorance and bigotry will catch up to you eventually." Where in the name of HEAVEN did you get the LUDICROUS idea that Keith Olbermann is "prejudiced against Catholics"? Would you like to produce some evidence of that accusation, please? Because if you can't put it up, you had best quit it with the baseless accusations.
Hey Wendell from Stoneham MA, if you're going to disagree with something that someone does or says at least have the decency to explain to why. How did Keith disappoint you? If you explain why something that someone has done to offend you, your comments about them can be understood and respected a little bit more. Wait what am I saying, your from MA, are you a Red Sox fan too. If so then don't explain yourself I already understand.
I was saddened to learn that MSNBC had caved to the most hypocritical duo of our time – Sharpton and Jackson. Clearly, Don Imus committed an egregious error during his broadcast, but unfortunately an opportunity for one of the greatest lessons that could have played out for all to see, has been eliminated, due to pressure from a duo that cozies up to the most vulgar individuals in entertainment history! An apology, and suspension, followed by reasonable dialogue between intelligent human beings, and lots of it I might add, should have been the end result of Imus’ cruel and thoughtless remarks. As a United States Air Force mom, I can assure you that Don Imus has done more for the young people in this country than Sharpton and Jackson ever did or ever dreamed of doing! My family and many others have steadfastly vowed to boycott MSNBC.
I am a 51 yr.old conservative, level-headed stockbroker and lawyer. In my life I have had situations that I did not agree with, but never have I taken such a zealous advocate role. What was done to Don Imus is more than an outrage, more than sinful. MSNBC's draconian acts are as unforgivable as Al Sharpton's and Jesse Jackson's lack of forgivness of Don Imus. MSNBC will never replace what it has thrown away. It is my prayer that all responsible for this career ending, unfair and unforgiving act will experience the same. I know there are millions of people in this country that feel this way. It is time now to be heard. This could happen to any of us. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are hippocrital, disingenuous public figures that do not fairly depict the mainstream of Black America. I challenge the friends, supporters, authors, musicians and politicians that have received support over the years from Don Imus to stand up now and do the right thing. If we can't do this under these extreme circumstances, our country has gone to hell in a handbasket. Sincerely, I remain, Glenn E. Brandon, Jr. Birmingham, Al.
To the supporters of Imus: The sad thing about this Imus situation is the fact that if the girls on the team and Imus had met and moved on as they both wanted to do, I think the show would have changed because Imus was as upset about what he said as anyone. I never heard one call for Imus being fired from the the girls on the team. They forgave him....Maybe they are real Christians who are decent people and forgive instead of making this a racial/political event. No one condones with what Don Imus said that morning. A 2 week suspension was reasonable. However, I heard on the news last week about a certain board member of msnbc and two political /racial activists meeting after hours with msnbc management and pressuring them into firing Imus. If this is true, to me this is a crime. If not literally a crime, this was certainly a conspiracy to advance racial/political positions to the detriment of Imus and to the detriment of what is right. If anything like this story is true Imus should be reinstated and he should be apologized to......I am calling on the long time advertisers, friends, musicians, authors and politicians to stand up for the man that sold their books and records and helped get them elected. Stand up and put Imus back on the air. In closing, last week John Kerry showed me a part of himself that I did not know,,,,,loyalty,,,,,I never supported Kerry before but I would now.....A real man stands up for his friends when they need it,,,,,where are all of you-- maybe a little scared of short of character? People will respect you if you do the right thing!!!! I am ashamed of what has happened here, but most ashamed that everyone who watched and called in every day has not shown the courage to speak out.... where are you? I have a list that I will put in my next writing of the fair weather friends I am talking about. If this turns out to be the raciest/political pressure I understood it to be from last weeks news, some people should lose their positions and jobs..this will come out if true I am sure. Thank you. Glenn Brandon
the turn on this imus situation is now well underway. from here i expect some heads to roll at msnbc, many people answer a lot of questions.an a whole lot of money paid to don imus and staff. from what i am hearing and reading several people involved at msnbc have regret over the fireing. gm and msnbc are in what i feel a very bad place.they have public opinion and the law on the other side.i am selling my gm and nbc investments and advising others to do so.it is my thought that a managment team that would get so involved and use its money to get don imus fired, and gives in to the likes of sharpton and jackson and their [rent a croud] or[rent march ways]i do not my investments in that mind set.this is msnbcs story .who knows who s telling the truth but now don imus is going to be fine and the other sides are about to enter a world of lawyers, paying money, and trying to get over this.i do not think msnbc will survive this has been too damaging and the on air depth is just not there.and if i were an advertising i would pull the plug after they blamed gm and others for this mess.last post from me ,last one out at msnbc catch the lights,,,thanks glenn
I must respond to the Imus stories on the net posted from the start of this case up to today. I want give this real thought and reason, both of which no one used when this story broke and the days after. This is not about hip-hop music. Don Imus listened to and had as guests on his show everything but hip hop. I recall many black and white performers-- some country, some rock, some old, some young. We all never would have listened to the show if he played and talked like those black and white trash mouthed people he is being compared to. No, it's not the music--just a slip of the tongue. We have all done it. What happened next is the story. One person involved with MSNBC conspired with TWO other black political activists/preachers and decided this was a race issue. From there my guess is GM and the other advertisers were pressured to pull adds from the show. This brought others into the mix to further the race based agenda. The reason for all of this was to use 3 words that should not have been said; but they were. Don Imus took the high road and met with the team and said he was sorry. But for the 3 men intent on bringing a powerful white man down, this would have all been over. The racist are the black men that pushed this to a level of almost blackmail. MSNBC was forced to make a decision that they were apparently not predisposed to make. Of course NBC has a duty to its shareholders to protect the interest of the company and not to advance a board member and a few employees personal political/raciest cause to the detrement of the company. We have missed the real story here. Don Imus was paid to shock and to say and do outlandish things. MSNBC knew what was on the show every day. Why did MSNBC not intervene on day 1 if they thought this was such a critical matter? The management of MSNBC could have issued a formal statement and had Don Imus make a formal apology. Another agenda was in play by this time. Sharpton, Jackson and the board member were making the plan to use force, blackmail, extortion or what ever you want to call it to make Don Imus an example of what can happen to you if you say anything that even has the slightest bit of racial overtone. Well, I think this has backfired just as it did to the DA in the Duke rape. Well, I guess we need to call it the Duke slander/defamation case because there was no rape. Dear Mr. DA, Jesse Jackson and the Rev. Sharpton helped you on that case. How's that working out for you? That's another situation where good people have been hurt because the media follows these two, and from there all hell breaks loose! If either of the cases were mine I WOULD SUE THEM ALL. I also would try for a personal judgment because in the Imus case it sounds like MSNBC AND IT'S BOARD MEMBER were acting on their personal political/racial interest and not acting within the scope of their employment. Their duty to was to protect shareholder value. Don Imus is a good person and deserves much more than this. If he wants to go back on the air I am sure he could get a group of fans to finance it. Thank you. Glenn Brandon
[Glenn E BRANDON] Un like ROSIE DON IMUS WILL BE BACK SOON AND THIS WHOLE THING WILL BE JUST A THING OF THE PAST IMUS WILL BE $120,000,000.00 RICHER CBS WILL FIRE ALL OF ITS UPPER MANAGMENT AS A SACRIFICIAL LAMB.[GLENN E BRANDON] THE HANDWRITING IS ON THE WAS.I have been upset over how the Imus situation has been handled I feel most of us in mainstream America regardless of race or political background can find common ground and settle our disputes. I by no means am a racist, nor do I support racism on either side. Yes, I will admit I was on a bit of a rant on this story because I feel strongly about this Additionally, I am confident that of all people Don Imus is not a racist. It might be better if alot of us would agree to disagree and focus our efforts on getting words like ho, bitch and other language away from our children's ears. Rap music and bad language is not a racial issue. I don't remember hearing any of this language in great black singers such as Sam Cooke or Ray Charles James Brown [we dont think his words were hard to understand] or even hard core blues men like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson or Sonhouse. This language problem exists because someone moved the bar. We need to put it back. Thank you . Glenn E Brandon JR JD BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA
