And Now He's Completely Unemployed

NEW YORK (AP) -- CBS has fired Don Imus from his radio show.

-- statement from CBS --

CBS TO CEASE BROADCASTING IMUS IN THE MORNING

CBS today announced its decision to cease broadcasting the Imus in the Morning radio program, effective immediately, on a permanent basis.

"From the outset, I believe all of us have been deeply upset and revulsed by the statements that were made on our air about the young women who represented Rutgers University in the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship with such class, energy and talent," said CBS President and Chief Executive Officer Leslie Moonves, in announcing the decision. "Those who have spoken with us the last few days represent people of goodwill from all segments of our society - all races, economic groups, men and women alike. In our meetings with concerned groups, there has been much discussion of the effect language like this has on our young people, particularly young women of color trying to make their way in this society. That consideration has weighed most heavily on our minds as we made our decision, as have the many emails, phone calls and personal discussions we have had with our colleagues across the CBS Corporation and our many other constituencies."

Imus in the Morning was carried on 61 stations across the United States and distributed over the Westwood One radio network. The cancellation of the program comes after statements Mr. Imus made about the young women who comprised the Rutgers University Women's Basketball team, which reached the finals of the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship this spring.

Moonves concluded: "I want to thank all those who came to see us to express their views. We are now presented with a significant opportunity to expand on our record on issues of diversity, race and gender. We intend to seize that opportunity as we move forward together."

Rarely watched Imus since the obnoxious bantering between Imus and his staff was just too much. That said, the current uproar proves that in America, you are judged by your words, not your deeds, so just become a talking head and tell people want they want to hear - collect your bling and laugh all the way to the bank...put a beat to it and some bone-jarring bass and you're a respectable citizen. By the way, when does the Geico caveman commercial series that exploits bigotry as an adorable corporate joke get its sitcom spin-off? And what network(s) will rake in those soul selling bucks (like the are now playing the ads)? Oops, another one just followed an MSNBC debate on bigotry and sexism. Should I laugh or cry? Now I feel really bad for singing along to Stevie Wonder's lyrics "...when I was a nappy-headed boy". Now I'll have to sort my music by race, and edit it so I don't get corrupted and sing lyrics banned for white people.
Please stop broadcasting Sharpton and Jackson's remarks and their agenda. MSNBC and CBS took away our right to listen or not listen and watch. The Squeeky wheels won for all the wrong reasons. They did not help the black or woman's causes, instead just fed the fury.
Yep Don Imus Was wrong,he led with his tongue,Boy I can't count the times I have done the same and been sorry and paid dearly. He made his amends! But to have the likes of Al Sharpton who broke bad on Jesse on his affairs and that daughter, then you got that made up rape Tawana Brawlay, and don't forget the ole Rainbow Coalition, and Harold Ford bails on him like a typical politician always got their hand out for the money Way to back Imus MNBC and CBS is Sharpton and Jesse on your payroll or those protesters. These two fools have admitted to using the race card in the past. There are links on google to prove it if you care. So here is the Forgiveness Radio Evangilical Radio Hour Of Power,Al Sharpton,Ted Haggard for the frosting, and Jesse Jackson.Yes and the Truth shall Set you free.
We all know by now what Don Imus said, so please stop repeating it you're just making it worse. It will just get to the point where it is no longer that Imus has said it and is guilty but that everyone else who says it or continues to say it is just as guilty and some action should be taken against them. Maybe send out a memo throughout the company requesting that it not be said anymore.
Don Imus by anyone standards is a good person. It is sad when we live in a country that can pick and choose when it want's to be politically correct and makes examples out of good honest people. Don Imus was fired because he is no longer marketable to CBS or NBC. I mean isn't Howard Stern still on the air? Who will speak for the females and say that he is a dirty nasty pig and needs to stop degrading women with every breath that he speaks? Whatever happened to the 1st Amendment? Last time I checked we have commedians who use every nasty word in the book but its all in fun right? This is all a bunch of sh***.
What Don Imus said was awful.Sounds like so much guy locker-room talk, which I do find disgusting. I have also noticed that so many guys simply do not get how deeply wrong it is. That said, I never listened to his show, so whether he stays or goes is pretty much a matter of indifference to me. If a national tipping point has been reached on appropriate language on the airways, then good. But it seems to me that the media is far more interested in this story than I, or most of the people I know, are interested in it. Iraq, the US Attorney firings, the missing RNC e-mails, the missing White House e-mails, The whole big cesspool that exists in Washington is much higher on my list than the media taking time for some self-reflection. Maybe it's just me, but I know know way more about Don Imus than I ever wanted to know, and have heard way more from way too many people.
Sad to say, the ousted Imus grew rich and powerful over the years with much assistance from big-name guests – a parade of pooh-bahs from politics, media, and entertainment who’ve been more than eager to access his mic. That stream of celebrity guests -- sycophants, book floggers, vote seekers, and court jesters included – had something to gain from associating themselves with this serial polluter of the public airwaves. I would like to hear from them as to how they were able to stifle their own doubts, standards of behavior, and moral/ethical concerns at consorting with an apparently feral personality unable or unwilling to monitor his own mouth. Who among the powerful in his posse of fans will ‘fess-up that they abetted Imus?
Wow, screw Imus and I could care less about the Rutgers women's basketball team. If Imus wasn't a jerkoff and prick for so long at MSNBC and was truly a good guy, he would still be there, fact is, he is a piece of crap behind the scenes. His true character came to light as he hints at every day with his offensive language. As for race baiters like Sharpton, give me a break, his own race won't listen to him, it is sad that Sharpton can only be heard when a white guy is shown for what he is. Take a look in the mirror jerk and the music industry.
Don Imus is an American icon. Very poor decisions on the part of MSNBC and CBS. This should have been handled differently.
Don Imus shouldn't have been fired! The mayor of LA says he wants to get his "Chocolate city" back to the way it was before and I didn't see Al Sharpton or the others running down there to silence him from making racist remarks. Last time I checked it was a "free" country and we can say whatever under the first ammendment. If you don't like what he says turn him off. There are songs playing on the radio a lot worse than what Imus said. MSNBC was wrong to fire Imus!
It is hard to understand why so many here are defending Imus or trying to minimize his blatant racism. Imus is quite free to say anything he wants, but it is quite understandable that advertisers might not be willing to be associated with remarks that are offensive to a large part of their target consumers. What is hard to understand why so many corporations are willing to advertise and (and thus promote) even worse racists and misogynists like Bill O or the always offensive Rush Limbaugh.
While I believe the mistake Don Imus made using the offensive and hurtful comment that casued him his job was reprehensible he did not deserve the treatment that he received from CBS and MSNBC. We the listeners are the ones who end up the losers in all this. As a listener and viewer for many years I found his program to be one of the more informative on the air. Comedy yes but I learned more about what was going on in politics, music, latest books, than I could get from all of the so called news outlets on TV or Radio. CBS TV, CBS Radio, MSNBC, and NBC are and never will be on in our home, automobile, or offices.
Don Imus should not have been fired by MSNBC & CBS. Perhaps you could learn a lesson of forgiveness from the Rutgers Womens Team, instead of listening to the likes of Sharpton & Jackson, two people who seem to promote racism more. I don't hear them apologizing to the Duke players, do you? Imus said a terrible thing, but he has apologized to them and truly seems genuinely sorry. Maybe if we Imus fans boycott MSNBC, CBS and the sponsors that took heat from Sharpton and Jackson, someone will take note of that, also.
GOD help us, When our TV viewing becomes totally controled by the likes of jesse and al (you notice no capitals) then we are all in big trouble. I've written more than a dozen E-mails in the last few days( more than i have written in the last year) and I still can't get my anger under control, why would any network let themselves be taken hostage by the likes of them, I just don't get it.
Don Imus should not have been fired. I have put a block on MSNBC will not watch this hypocritical station any more. And,they fired him before he could complete his radiothon to raise money for three different charities. Nice work MSNBC and CBS. The work Don Imus has done for our soldiers, the children with autism, the kids with cancer--the list goes on and on. Maybe now the Rev. Sharpton and Jesse Jackson would like to take over these worthwhile endeavors.
Don Imus was all msnbc had going for them. His remark was made without rancur or vindictiveness, he made a stupid remark off the top of his head. He shouldn't have been removed from the air. I have removed msnbc from my tv and would recommend everybody to do the same. I would think advertisers would find another outlet.
I wonder if Obama is going to give back those contributions from Geffen, who is behind some of this hip hop rap music, now that he finds that kind of talk Imus said so demeaning and offensive to women. I am waiting for the honest press out there to ask that honest question.
Hey goatgirl, check your facts before you spew. The Rev Al has his own show so save the double talk and bs for someone that does not know the facts. I guess when Imus showed up to talk on the Rev Al's show that must have been his first ever show, right? Just another ill informed person trying to pass off her lack of knowledge as fact.
As usual, the truth eventually comes out. Mr. Roker gave false praise for the "courage" of the powers in charge when they fired Imus. It turns out that Mr. Roker was loud and persistent in his criticism and demands for the action to be taken. The bosses withered under the pressure from the people in his organization that were most effected by the remarks that they constantly repeated with the excuse that it was "news". The bosses were not courageous, they went with the pressure and sponsors. Should Imus have said what he said? Of course not. How much more damage was done by the constant repetition of what he said? If what he said was so aggregious and reprehensible, why was it constantly repeated? When vicious gossip is repeated who is most at fault? The one who said it once or those that amplify the effect by constant repetition? I am sure that this comment will not appear since every remark I have made on this subject has somehow disappeared. I have not used any foul language but I have told the truth as I see it.
Below is the poll (from MSNBC's own site until they pulled it off) that NONE of the MSNBC (including our boy Keith), NBC or CBS pundits want you see. Over a QUARTER OF A MIllION people responded and 76% do NOT APPROVE of Imus's firing and 24% DO AGREE. Tell your viewers the TRUTH about issues Keith or get off the air. You and CBS, NBC, MSNBC are nothing more than Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson LAP DOGS that COMPLETELY IGORE and, in fact, RIDICULE the views of more than 75% of your FORMER viewers. Good luck with that. Live Vote Did Don Imus deserve to be fired by CBS? * 279154 responses Yes, he went too far, and for no reason 24% No, the comment wasn't that big a deal 22% The suspension was deserved, but firing him is an overreaction 54%
It has nothein to do about Race yet. It is about Al Sharpton and getting the Sponsors nagged to death by all the Black Groups like the NAACP! What they have done now is Put Race back in it! Set it back by Decades there will be even more Racism in this country than ever. The Whites need to get a Voice Back in this Country it is time to form our own Groups to fight the Al Sharptons and Jesse Jacksons so we can have equal right and Freedom of Speech Again.Wake up America how many more rights are we willing to lose? And those girls wore the Sweatshirts to hide all the Tattoos. I do not think for one minuet they are actually the way they acted on TV in real life. How many times have they called each other just what was said by Imus? They will Never admit it so do not even ask them ask other people that might have heard them say it. And 10 people do not make a Basketball Team! Where where the rest of the teem? These where hand picked Players to add to the Shock for the Media!!!
So, Imus is gone. I dont't think he will need to apply for food stamps. However the many charities he so generously supported will be hurt. I hope and pray that NBC and CBS also feel the pain. I will not watch or listen to either of them.
All for Al and NAACP and the Advertising Dollars that was what it was about. You will Lose more in listeners to the Radio, TV all of your Stations will lose Millions of viewers and that adds up to Dollars to. We the People can also make the Sponsors Pay by Boycotts! You Tube already has one started please go there and joine in. I bet they will not out this up.

Last time I checked we have comedians who use every nasty word in the book but its all in fun right? This is all a bunch of sh***. All his so called friends Black and White in the Media have turned there backs on him but Remember he will be back someone will give him a bigger show if there is justice in our Country for the true minority the white man. And you will reap his wrath!
PA Post, You said, "Don Imus is an American icon." You owe me a new keyboard and mouse afterIi spewed chocolate milk all over them guffawing at that one. If Imus is an American icon, then it's of a vile, bigoted, racist America that needs to have the rest of the country shun and turn it's back on. You also say, "This should have been handled differently." On that, you may be right. Imus should have immediately fired his bigoted racist sleaze of a producer Bernard McGirk, as he, McGirk was the one who started off the bigoted name calling. Then Imus should have apologized from the heart and immediately pledged to donate $1,000,000 of his own money to the general scholarship fund at Rutgers University. then he should have self suspended himself, WITHOUT PAY for a month. But I get the feeling that you would have done nothing and in fact were chortling right along with Imus and the rest of his cohorts when the remarks were made.
I have been an Imus in the morning listener for over 20yrs and will miss his show. I agree that what he said was wrong and hurtfull. Sadly though i enjoyed the format where politicians and news people would come on and have imformal discussions with him. I will also miss the fact the he would ask questions that i would ask myself. He used to refer to Donald Rumsfeld as a war criminal for sending our boys over to Iraq, and honestly i agree with that statement. But no one else would have the courage or the balls to say that, they are too worried about being "politically correct". Sometimes i think we need a little less being "politically correctness" and alot more just plain getting the point.Too bad the elitest in american dont understand that. Good luck I-man, gonna miss you.
I had to add my comment to this discussion. In my opinion, this was a opportunity, seized upon by Sharpton and Jackson to get big-time air-time! Was the statement inappropriate, absolutely. Should Imus be reprimanded? Absolutely. Should Imus be "Stoned to death"? Absolutely not. I do not believe that any of the fine young female Rutgers players, coaches, administrators even listen to Imus. No, this was the media creating news. Retribution should have be made and the format changed to begin talking about and eventually eliminating this language not only from our airways, but from our culture. Who knows, Using Imus, this incident could have triggered change and educated those who listen. Now, nothing much will change. I fear the Imus incident will fade, but the rethoric will go on in our communities and on our streets. To CBS management, I think you missed a great opportunity for change. Just yesterday at a mall, I heard two African American Teens use all of the words that Imus uttered plus others, and that was just in normal conversation. I often hear young black men while playing basketball use the "N" word;the "F" word;the "MF" word and the "HO" word while speaking to friends of their own ethnicity. Imus should have penilized, but should not have been fired. Sharpton and Jackson bagged a big one and no one at CBS had the courage to stand-up.
So many of you are missing the point completely. Of course Imus had the legal right to say what he did, no matter how abhorent. You notice he wasn't arrested. He is paying the price for his folly because of the marketplace. There is no PC police no matter how we decry 'their' interference into our discourse. We, you and I, are the ones who decide what we will and won't tolerate. When listeners called the sponsors with their concerns, the sponsors listened and decided that they would no longer support the show. No sponsorship means the show is no longer profitable. He cut his own throat with his own stupidity and is now paying the price. It is, was, and always has been, the marketplace that determines what we hear and see . . .and the marketplace is us.
I am tired of this...the only objectionable thing about Imus' comments is that he's caucasian. Blacks call each other every name in the book, but it's ok, allowed, published, aired and record labels sign artists using this same language. Talk about reverse discrimination...no one in the NAACP objects unless a caucasian makes the remark. If these young ladies have as much going for them as you say, they need to buck up and go on. It's about time 'racially challenged' groups stop blaming everyone for their shortcomings. It's no different than gays, obese, etc. groups being made fun of...get a life and become responsible for yourself. My god...just turn on the radio...it is offensive to me!!!! as a white woman, but I don't hear an outcry from the AA community ... and why... it's an AA station with recordings being aired which were produced by AA. Seems it's OK for blacks to make money off their divisive comments, but not when a non-black repeats the same language. I hate Imus but this is an outcry of discrimination of the worst kind, and honestly I'm sick of it. Thank god I have more self esteem than to sue or go to the media over every racial comment made about me as a white person. Enough is enough...take the language off the air all together, or leave it be...stop picking and choosing who you punish based on the color of their skin!
Welcome to the land of hindsight America. Because of our apathy the scum of this country keeps rising to the top, only to topple by its own weight. I enjoy watching the so called voices of the people trying to reach the top of the Imus heap 1st. What an unbelievable smell that must be. Unintelligent insults, by anyone, are not free speech. It cost our society respect.
Don Imus was our voice, he opened our eyes greatly to things in this country we were too busy to realize. He and his wife brought Autism into our focus and the need for a cure. He recruited millions of dollars from private citizens to get the Forgotten Heros Bldg. built in texas, he spoke to many congressmen and senators to get the death benefits for our soldiers raised from 12, 000.00 to 250,000.00 He also would NOT stop talking about the horrible facilites at Walter Reed....Thats the Imus I know....and our united states will suffer a terrible loss without his voice..."Rev"Jackson and Sharpton..what have you done for your country lately ???? God Bless YOU Imus and thanks for all you've done without the "fear" that we now all live with.
The most disturbing thing in reading all these comments is the staggering ignorance it reveals about the First Amendment. Don Imus's NEVER had a First Amendment right to speak on the radio or TV. His freedom of speech was NOT infringed by his being fired. He was NOT censored--censorship is a function of government authority, not private business. If two corporations determined that their interests were no longer served by employing Imus, they had an absolute right to fire him. That's free market capitalism. If you disagree with the decision, feel it was hypocritical, wish public ire would be now be directed at others, so be it. Just don't muddy the discourse further by falsely claiming the issue has anything to do with Freedom of Speech, the First Amendment, or Censorship. You can't defend your Constitutional rights if you don't know what they are. And these days, as our rights are being slowly stripped away, it's more important than ever that citizens be able to discuss and defend those rights accurately. (P.S. to Pam's comment about Rush: I think his calling Obama a "Halfrican American" provides you the example for which you were looking.)
Why when a white person says something it is racist not only whites are tacist you do realize. If a white person made a movie called black women cant waltz it would be called racist but it was ok to have a movie called white men cant jump. we have united negro college fund what about a unite white fund you would yell racist. If we had white hisotry month it would be called racist but yet we have black history month I think you get the idea. Many racists ar black too
Congratulations to MSNBC and CBS for supporting free speech by standing behind Imus(while booting his cantankerous old butt out the door). What a proud moment for these two media giants.
Don Imus said something that was repugnant and horrible about the Rutgers womens basketball team. That being said, to give him the death penalty and silence him marks the begining of a slippery slope. The question here is if you can fire someone for being offensive, who decides what is offensive? Rather than being seen as intelligent human beings who can fight offensive speech by simply turning it off, there are a small group of people who believe that we, the American people, are nothing more than a bunch of drooling, mouth breathing idiots who don't know enough to develop our own opinions and make up our own minds about issues. The first ammendment does not just say that you have freedom of speech, but that you also have the right NOT to listen to what you don't want to hear. The firing of Imus is not about taking away his first ammendment rights as much as is is about taking away everyone elses. As a liberal democrat, I find the Bush administrations efforts to undermine the constitution to be totally unacceptable. However, as a logical human being, I also find that anyone else who tries to undermine the constitution to suit their own agenda on the left is equally unacceptable. The founding fathers knew what they were doing when wrote the constitution. All we have to do is follow it, without trying to interpret it for our own political or personal gain.
I am ashamed at how CBS & MSNBC handled this situation. I also am not surprised that your MSNBC poll about whether Don Imus should be fired or even suspended was pulled and not mentioned after it showed an overwhelming amount of folks thought it was wrong (were the advertisers looking?). Nearly 70% thought the decision was wrong to fire. Nearly 1 in 4 thought a suspension was too much. CBS and MSNBC was wrong. The truth might hurt so hide the opinions and polls.
Don Imus's mistake was simply commenting about a team that was black. The problem with that is black leaders like Jesse Jackson, Louis Farrakan, and Al Sharpton create an enviroment where "black" means to be a victim. You have to act completely victimized. Had the words "Nappy Headed Ho's" been uttered about an all white basketball team, very little would have been done. The team would of said "who cares what an old man's opinions are!". That is reality which is why Jesse Jackson didn't recieve as much uproar about his New York City comments. When did "Nappy" become the new "N" word? People have used that to denote "messy hair", without attaching race to it. These "Black" leaders are the biggest racist there are. They attach the color to the comments and situations and help to grow the list of victims.
