All The President's Missing Documents

Posted: Friday, April 13, 2007 11:41 AM by Countdown

Some of what we're working on for tonight...

Salon's Glenn Greenwald says the Bush administration has a history of losing key documents relevant to investigations and judicial proceedings. Just in case you thought any of those emails were "routinely destroyed" accidentally, check out his astonishing list of other times key documents have mysteriously gone missing.

IN THE ZONE The video was astonishing. For an even more harrowing account of what it was like inside the Iraqi Parliament cafeteria yesterday when that bomb went off, the Washington Post's Sudarsan Raghavan was there.

THE BOY WHO CRIED WOLFOWITZ World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz has apologized for the mistake of promoting his girlfriend and giving her a big, fat raise. No apology though for getting the U.S. into the war in Iraq on false pretenses. That would have been nice, too.

DRAWING THE LINE Now that Don Imus has been fired, Minnesota Senate candidate Al Franken has called for CNN's Glenn Beck to be fired. The best part? He did it on CNN. The folks at Think Progress have video.

HE WANTS THE BOOK And if it's no longer okay to degrade African-American women... Harvey Fierstein is wondering if this nation still plans to consistently make fun of gay men and lesbians. "How do you people choose which hate to embrace, which to forgive with a wink and a week in rehab, and which to protest? Where’s my copy of that rule book?"

I think those docs were secure until Sandy Berger came to visit ! Someone check his drawers!!
Are we suggesting scandalous behavior here? This is what Bush had to say in 2000: "Americans are tired of investigations and scandal, but the best way to get rid of them is to elect a new president who will restore honor and dignity to the White House. I have done so as governor of Texas. I will do so as president of the United States." That seems to be working about as well as the Iraq surge. Also, I saw that Paul Wolfowitz got caught misusing his position as head of the World Bank to give his girl friend massive raises. It's okay though. He said he's sorry.
Well, well, well. 4 Years of Rove e-mails gone "missing". I am shocked, just shocked! I guess we can add this to the quite long list of criminal, immoral and unethical activity by this administration. That's right, the Bush administration, the one that was going to bring ethics and morality back to the White House after the Clinton administration. Something tells me that these clowns are not nearly as slick as they think they are, and somewhere there is an IT guy or gal who will bust this thing wide open. Sadly, the kool-aid drinkers will still scream "witchhunt!" and claim all this oversight is political, and not what Congress should have been doing for the last 6 years. Sadly, there will still be those who refuse to face reality, and all I can say is, will someone please give Bush a BJ so we can impeach him?!?
Reference Don Imus, Glen Beck etc. While we are on the subject of sexist remarks. I have a question, we all agreed that the ad attacking Harold Ford of Tennessee was racist, but why didn't the media pick up on the sexist message of said ad? I hope in the future the people that spawn the garbage will be hauled before the court of human decency.
#1 Rove is well enough insulated to withstand any push to "Get him". The fact that he is unwilling to cooperate with the investigation identifies what kind of a person he really is. The investigation will eventually run its course and be put on the pile of unresolved political BS. #2 I never listened to Imus. When anyone says things that he has said I can't believe that it's just a show. Controllers of the airwaves are in the business of making money. Other talking heads will keep their jobs until another uproar. Al Sharpton and others of his inclination like RushL and BillO so they are safe from them. #3 Please start calling the occupation of Iraq for what it is. Referring to it as a war is incorrect. Iraq will never be united. It has had trouble ever since it was pushed together by foreign meddlers a century ago. #4 A US bomb is dropped in an attempt to "get" some element on a building in the city of Baghdad Innocent people are killed in the action. A suicide bomber in the green zone. Innocent people are killed in the action. I guess I don't get it. How one can be justified and the other condemned. Millions of people have been displaced. Hundreds of thousands killed. For what? The only answer I get is "War on Terrorism, All is justified" To repeat what MSNBC Capus has said "When is enough, enough.
We will get those emails, I guessing, around the same time we get the evidence that this same administration used to send us to Iraq. This Administration has lied to not only us, the American People, but the entire world. When will they be held accountable for there actions? Hopefully, the next true president will try this Administration as the Ware Criminals that they are.
At what point does the nation say "we've had enough"? This administration has corrupted and mismanaged everything it has touched. I believe their are some nefarious dealings in those e-mails and that Rove, Bush & Co. will stop at nothing to keep them hidden. All of the accusations made by Repubilcans against Pres. Clinton and the Democrats have actually be done, and to a greater degree, by these crooks and liars. The GOP must believe that the bigger the lie they tell us, the easier we will swallow it.
I wonder whose Constitution they pledged to uphold and protect? It sure was not our US Constitution. Liars, cheats and theives the lot of them. Impeach, impeach and then impeach.
Well the bushies do have a way of stonewalling obfuscating , obscuring, parsing, spinning and just plain lying. Sen. Leahy is dead on with his Watergate and "the dog ate my homework" analogies. I had a German Sheperd as kid that ate EVERYTHING. not once did she ever eat my homework. Despite all the papers I left in her dish!
To me this sounds just like the sort of thing a criminal organization like the Republican Mafia would do. No big surprise. We have our own version up here in Canada - it's called the Conservative Party of Alberta. They have created many ways of hiding what they do including having a "Freedom of Information" act, that makes sure you can't access any government information, without paying a BIG fee and a nine month wait. Unfortunately, the "press" in this part of the country is so gutless, it lets the "government" here get away with it. The prevailing philosophy seems to be "We have to be really nice to them or they'll take there ball and go home" ... F*** ME !!!! :-( Sure wish we had some broadcasting with balls up here, something like your show Keith.
"Whad'ya mean?...they're gonna find my...uh...my CORE-us-PON-dunce to the Bunny Ranch?...Can't the CIA...Homeland...Whatever...stop'em?" - Dubya to Karl Rove.
We are paying the price for all the wedgies Karl Rove recieved in junior high.God help us all
This may be off topic but it hasn't shown up in other threads where I put it. I STRONGLY urge all visitors to this blog to read "War Is A Racket" by Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler U.S.M.C. He also has an essay "I Was A Thug For Capitalism" These are as timely today as when they were written. Pam in San Pedro I hope you get this I have not forgotten about you but lately my posts haven't been showing up. It's amazing they let scott and larry attack everyone but when I try to fire back I'm censored. I don't get it.
Hey Scott? What happened to the emails? Do you think it was accidental?
To Rob Sebastian's point, this Administration has not pledged to necessarily uphold the US Constitution, but to the Constitution according to George W Bush. As members of this Administration continue to find out, they will rarely get in trouble for violating their oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution, as long as it is consistent with George W Bush's interpretation of it. However, they know they will always get into trouble if they violate their apparent blood oath of loyalty to George W Bush. So, where these two oaths are at odds, they will choose loyalty over legality.
"BAGHDAD - A car bomb blasted through a busy bus station near one of Iraq’s holiest shrines on Saturday, killing at least 56 people, police and hospital officials said. Separately, a suicide car bomb killed 10 people on a major bridge in downtown Baghdad — the second attack on a span over the Tigris River this week, police said." Senator McCain - how dare you speak the words you did about the safety of the streets of Baghdad!! You sir, a man I once admired and respected very much, have sold your soul for reasons I cannot even fathom!! It is time, Senator McCain, to bring our brave men and women home, and NOW!! It's time to stop your lies, which parrot those of George W. Bush and this Administration, and begin the journey of truth - what you used to stand for Senator McCain!!
Maybe they won't actually "get them" but I think the noose is finally closing in on them and showing their true colors to the Bush supporters. These guys are not only guilty of these things but cynically "used" the eveangicals and other conservatives for their own warped agenda. Watching Politically Incorrect last night and seeing the former White House press secretary still trying to spin these things and repeat lines from four years ago "just give it a chance..." made it obvious how deslusional they are. They bought into this BS so much and found how wrong they were but still can't admit they made a mistake and make changes. No, they just cling to the rhetoric and hope it will turn out all right. Or better yet, keep this going long enough to dump in on the next administration and walk away. Someone once said the definition of insanity is to repeat a mistake over and over and expect a different result with each attempt. Sounds like Bush and his cronies.
Shall we make a list children? Jack Abramoff, Duke Cunningham, KArl Rove, Paul Wolfowitz, and, wait for it...........Dick Cheney. See a pattern here? Mr. Bush, for God's sake man, save yourself.
I wish the Iman had not been fired. He does so much good for people. Granted, what he said was not right-but the punishment went way overboard. If God forgives, I see no reason we can't. We are supposed to take lessons from Him. I have listened to Iman since the 1970's. Seems like I have lost a family member.
This administration over the last 6yrs has done more damage to this country & seperated it's people than any terrorist group could have ever done. No one in the world trusts us any more to do what is right because of the good ol boy mentality. "I wil do it my way. I'm the decider!" When will capital hill wake up & do something about all this idiotic stuff he is doing?? Let our Constitution be the DECIDER!!!
Leahy compared the missing emails to the 18 1/2 minute gap in the Watergate tapes, and he is quite right. Nixon's secretary insisted she "accidentally" erased the tape...and these emails "accidentally" got lost. Yeah, right. Can we impeach Bush now? Twenty one months is too damned long to get rid of him!
At this point it is rather moot as to what exactly happened. Mr.Oberman and his fellow entertainers automatically assume and spin the evil president and his henchmen have caused all the worlds ills; including famine, global warming, bad weather and even the loss of the dodo bird. Until this president is out of office, the only "news" will be about what a crook and liar he is, period.
OK, seeing as how nothing new has been put up here all weekend, I have no other place to put this. This is a link to a great YouTube video about Bill O'Reilly, "The Big Giant Head." It's a country-music-style tribute to Billo. Catch it and enjoy. I did.
Please what happen to freedom of speach. I am tired of hearing african american people complain. Stop and shut up what happen happen to your ansesters not you personally. Stop complaing tell me why is their so much aids and black people have aids more yhink about that.
An update would be nice.
Regarding Iman: Hmmmm, I wonder how long before they come after Mr. Olbermann? Does he really think correctly? Should Jesse Jackson be the one to make this call? From where I sit in the world this is very scary road we are heading down.
Lynn, New Orleans - Pay "Larry, Charleston, SC no attention. He insults women all the time, as I have been victim to his horrid name calling and attacks. You made an excellent point; and sadly, he never can!! Therefore he resorts to insults and name calling, or blaming "Bill Cliton". Your remarks are dead on target, and he has no clue to life; and I'm starting to think he's either five years old; or has been living under a rock for fifty years!! You go girl and just ignore him - we all do!! He really should block with other bigots such as O'Reilly, Rush and Hannity!! I guess he also finds sick humor in name calling as they do. Keep up the good work!!
Hey Larry from Charleston -- About those USAs that couldn't do their jobs -- Was Gonzalez lying about their performance in public now, or on their good performance evaluations? There is no way he was honest on both occasions. And the Rove e-mails that we do have have him involved with this that far back. Are you another Republican that had "other priorities" than defending the Constitution and for whom the Honor Code was just too much?
Bill Rochester NY - None of us should be surprised. I am not surprised, I am not shocked, I am insulted. When I was six years old and in the first grade, a classmate used the "my dog at my homework excuse"; and he was promptly sent by the "nun" to the Church's Pastor!! Yikes!! I learned never to use that excuse. But this Administration, a lying clan of criminals, think we are all stupid. And yes, they have now insulted not just me, but my dog!! I cannot understand how any of these idiots think anyone with ONE brain cell (except loyal bushies and the Administration of criminals) would believe that Karl Rove really thought his "emails were being preserved elsewhere". Shut up Karl Rove, we have heard enough of your lying insults!! The one man, who was solely restricted from deleting ANY and ALL emails, are mysteriously gone!! This man is worse than anyone we have seen working in any Administration!! Bush is the worst president this country has ever had!! Liar!! Nixon? Bush and this criminal Administration make Nixon look like he got caught stealing jelly beans!!
Lynn, New Orleans - I've made several response's to LARRY CHARLESTON SC in the last thread & also in this one, but they have not posted for some reason. Lynn, thank's for the laugh, the remark on Bush was funny! I thought about it & said, could we find someone who would want to do that & said i don't think so, but after reading Larry's post to you & a few other people's in past thread's, i've determined, yes there would be a line of volunteer's that would love it! Thank's agian Lynn, that was a good one!
We elect congress right? Congress represents us right? It appears that more Americans every day believe GWB & his cronies should be IMPEACHED. Million dollar questions...what more evidence do they need that this administration is criminal, & why are they not yelling out the windows "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!"?
Tom Y MN - Oh, how right on target you are!! The right hates Bill Clinton because he's brilliant. "We", the democrats gave this country a road scholar, and the "right" gave us, as an idiot, who as Bill Maher says, "interrupts one incoherent sentence with another incoherent sentence. Further infuriating them was in 1996, when President Clinton "gave them their lunch" in his re-election landslide. He left office with the highest approval rating of any president in US history, and the "right" can't stand it. They go on like blabbering buffoons because they are so angry that not just this country, but the world, loves Bill Clinton. A telling sign was during Tony Blair's re-election. Bush was kindly asked "not to visit" and Blair campaigned with recycled photos of President Clinton and himself. Oh what a telling story that was!! The "right" feel like idiots for their blind support of the stupidest person ever to reside in the White House, who is personally responsible for their party falling apart. In addition they know full well President Clinton was one of the best presidents this country ever had!! He rocked and they know it!! Again, we went from road scholar to criminal moron!!
Ms Deane Felthauser, Nah the Prsesident hasn't caused all the world's ills only the ones Karl Rove and old Mr Cheney missed the bases on. We will be paying the no new taxes deficits long after he has left DC spending Our, money he whine about that Nancy won't give him,yes that' right our money pork barrel and all.He is all ready overdraw ob his account, deficit no new taxes to the tune of 417 bil.The guy is a Connecticut Yankee playing cowboys, get a clue there Tex,they like oil globe me war me over Pop Eye!
Bill Rochester NY: You noticed that to, i just asked countdown about that, "Larry & Scott", they were getting thier attack's in , but my response's were lost, i was defending countdown agianst Larry. They told me there had been to many duplicate post, maybee it was just a tech problem! I'll take them at thier word, after all "Countdown" replied back to me.
They lie once again......all email databases are back-up and purged everyday, they have just put them in a nice place till they need them. And then.... wow look what we found.
Pam Bignardi & Bill Rochester NY; I get tired of hearing other's refer to the Rose Law Firm Paper's, no comparison to the 5 million email's. I'd say to those trying to make that comparison, why stop there go further back, say to the Nixon tape's, now there's your comparison. Watched the Beltway Boy's friday, hosted by Jim Angle, all they did was make light of the Email's, calling it a political witch hunt by democrat's, & just laughing up a storm! saying this is a joke, no evidence at all. Well i quess if you delete the evidence? On another thread Ian, Canada asked is not the RNC some what criminaly responsible? I responded by saying, it depend's on who's doing the illegal act. Blurring the line between Executive Privilege, Illegal, & Criminal has to stop! If you remember back, when the story broke about the FBI using the "Patriot Act" illegaly to obtain information from U S Citizen's & investigation said that although illegal no criminal act occured! Look up Illegal you get; Forbidden by law, & unlawful; Look up Criminal you get; Illegal, Unlawful, & wrongful. WOW!
Pam, it is Rhodes Scholar, not road. The program is not that impressive if you look into it (still a good education, just a bit overinflated). - TO ALL OTHER POSTERS - May I suggest an interesting bit that the Washington Post started off flying high on Sunday but quickly relegated to the back pages. What is this article? This flag run up the pole and so swiftly withdrawn? It is a very weak and pitiful supposedly self-penned defense of himself on the firings issue by none other than AG Gonzales. It can be found at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/04/14/AR2007041401010.html -- I might suggest reading the comments section if you want to see how really angry people are about him and his Constitutional abuses.
Don't read blogs that much, but haven't heard one suggestion of what I'm gonna say in the regular news media. I watched Imus, and I'm a 55yr white male. I'd laugh, but would also cringe. Never could figure how he got away with it. Anybody that could complain is that mayor Ray Nagan from New Orleans. Those skits by Bernard were beyond the pale. Why now? Keep hearing reports of black and other journalist orgs. that started to complain. The real instigator is CNN! Don for about 2 weeks gloated and bragged how his little radio/tv show beat out CNN in the morning. They replaced those two O'Brians with Chetry and Roberts. I knew when Don was mouthing, that CNN probably wasn't going to take that lying down. I could never prove it, but the reason Imus went down now, is cause CNN saw to it.
Did Bush authorize the attorney firings? http://www.abqjournal.com/news/special/554986nm04-15-07.htm This would clearly seem to suggest that he most certainly did.
George W.Bush and members of his administration began violating The Presidential Records Act of 1978 from the very moment they siezed power. Congress did nothing to address this violation of Article Two, "Faithfully execute" clause. My guess is that they didn't want to really know about Iran-Contra, or of the Reagan/Bush administrations' support for the regime of Saddam Hussein and his development of WMDs, and certainly didn't want the American people to find out. And it has not gone unnoticed by this reader that most of the Reagan/Bush gang is back in the White House. "I do solemnly swear to preserve, protect, and defend...so help me GoD" Bwahahaha! Washington, D.C. isn't going to be a very happy place on judgement day. Hey, Congress. There's still time for Impeachment!
Tru M., Cleveland, Ohio: Thanks for the link to Billo the talking head ... what a hoot!
Pam and Don-thanks for the notice, I have been reading ya'll's posts regularly along with CA and others, and have to say it is comforting to know I am not wandering in the wilderness here. It is easy to see that Larry is indeed a troll, and it is best to ignore childish behavior, but sometimes I just feel feisty! Personally I am ready for the Imus flap to end, unless it brings about a serious remedy to the poison flowing over the nation's airwaves. I am not holding my breath. It's off to work for me, I'll be checking in later to see what is the scandal du jour. It's getting harder and harder to keep track. Perhaps the News Hole could put up some sort of bar graph or something so we can keep all the players straight?
It's time now for Bill Cosby to come out from the woodwork and remind us that he's been complaining about the culture that makes use of the kind of language that got Don Imus fired. He can start off with a big "I TOLD YOU SO".
Don: The beltway boys are idiots. Especially Fred Barns. I could careless what these guys think. This country needs a political talk show hosted by an average Joe or Pam America and his/her guests would be average Joe's and Pam's from all across America. Let's hear on a nightly or weekly basis those opinions of your average real American versus the current shows that have the same talking heads on day in and day out. Most are journalists whose opinions are no more educated or important than those on these blogs. I'll host with Pam from San Pedro and we'll start our guest appearnces with those folks who blog here including Scott and Lee and Larry, then expand out to others in America who wish to have a say. Hey Countdown, think MSNBC might be interested? We could call the show - America Speaks. And as hosts we promise not to write silly-ass opinionated books that no one reads anyway as most talking heads on the current shows seem to do.
Todd, New Orleans, LA - Thanks Todd, and I really enjoy your posts!!
C A - Good idea and thanks for the compliment. While driving to work today, George W. Bush gave another speech, riddled with his recycled lies from the White House. The "LIAR" again stated "Congress is refusing to fund the troops". In that same speech, he stated "the VAST number of Americans agree with me". HA!! Thank goodness I was stuck in "parking lot" traffic on one of Los Angeles' busies freeways!! What planet is he living on? I know he doesn't read newspapers; as he has publicly admitted to this; in addition, he does not "believe polls", as he has admitted to this. However, how he could ignore the November 2006 election, when Americans gave the Democrats a landslide victory, kicking out the "blank check GOP" from it's abominable "agree with Bush no matter what" attitude is beyond comprehension. As Bill Maher has said, he "interrupts one incoherent sentence with another incoherent sentence", as he did this morning. These incoherent sentences are so riddled with bold-faced lies I cannot understand how he gives them with a straight face! He knows damn well that Congress has funded his "bill"; however, Georgie, the spoiled brat who cannot and will not LISTEN to anyone, continues with his monologue of lies. His recycled speeches are old, outdated and proven to be lies. Dick Cheney has been wrong about everything from why we supposedly had to go to Iraq, how long it would take, how "Iraqi oil would pay for the war", then estimated at 100 billion by the "Dick". We are currently at 400 billion, and this new "emergency spending bill" gives an additional 100 billion, totaling 500 billion to date, with ZERO Iraqi oil revenue return to the United States. The insurgency, "in its final throws" was wrong! We cannot and should not listen or believe one word out of Bush's mouth. He's a criminal and a proven liar; and this most recent speech, riddled with the same recycled lies, just further proves it. Congress - don't back down!! Give Bush his "lunch" and let HIM "defund the troops" with his veto pen of arrogance, lies and disregard for our Constitution and for human life itself!!
The only problem with impeaching W is that we then would get Cheney! Obviously Rove and his colleagues on Fox are big admirers of the Nazi proaganda minister, Dr. Goebbels' philosophy of telling the big lie.
“George W.Bush and members of his administration began violating The Presidential Records Act of 1978..." SD. --- KO, The Presidential Records Act was enacted just after Nixon's crimes to ensure that the president could not conduct illegal acts hidden behind a veil of executive privilege. How about some more discussion of this issue? Was Rove's deleting the emails actually a criminal act in itself? If so, does it warrant bipartisan congressional inquiry? How will letting him off affect the future of presidential powers?
Yes Pam: The American people have become very weary of this president and his recycled lies. The guy can't come up with anything new to try and maintain this conflict and to seek public support. He has become just as boring and tiresome as he is incompetent. You can't reach much lower depths than that. He is at the bottom of the pit and it is long overdue for the Dems and the American people to fill in that pit, place a marker that reads Here Lies G W Bush - Boring, Tiresome and Incompetent, sing a joyous hymn of departure, and move on.
JW, Chicago- Thank's i was trying to remember what the ACT was called. It's sad that whenever This White House violate's any ACT or The FBI violate's say the Patriot Act the public is alway's shot a line of crap! like although wrong & or illegal, no crime! was commited who's believing this crap & why do the citizen's have a deferent code of law we have to follow.
