Film industry lobbyist Jack Valenti dies

STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH

Laura and I are saddened by Jack Valenti's death. Jack Valenti was a great American and a great Texan. He bravely flew combat missions during World War II and ably served in the White House. From protecting families by creating the movie rating system to advocating for intellectual property rights, Jack Valenti helped transform the motion picture industry. He leaves a powerful legacy in Washington, in Hollywood, and across our Nation.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Jack's wife Mary Margaret, his children, and his friends and colleagues.

STATEMENT BY GOVERNOR ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER

"Maria and I were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Jack Valenti.

"Today, our nation has lost a great leader, a true gentleman and a genuine American hero.

"A model for public service, Jack inspired us all when he defended our freedoms with honor and distinction as a pilot during World War II. After the tragic assassination of President Kennedy, he continued his dedicated service to our nation when he joined President Johnson's administration as a trusted advisor.

"In his 38 years with the Motion Picture Association of America, Jack's passionate advocacy and steadfast leadership guided the organization to tremendous success and prepared the film industry for the new millennium.

"He offered me his valuable expertise when I ran the President's Council on Physical Fitness as well as during my campaign for Governor and after I was elected by the people of California. I will always remember Jack for his exceptional grace and unwavering support. And I will always treasure the wonderful advice he gave me as a film professional, mentor and dear friend.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Mary Margaret, and to his entire family."

There will be those who mourn Jack Valenti, and they shall point to numerous accomplishments, of which many do exist, but I shan't mourn this man. He was to those outside the U.S, the face of American cultural imperialism, who sought to destroy local protections of film industries. Canadians, the friends on the northern border experienced Valenti's bullying on this topic. Ironic that Canada should become known as Hollywood North, all to Valenti's dismay. Canadians will not miss this man. A sentiment that is echoed in other countries around the world.
Neither will those filmmakers whose works suffered due to the MPAA's rating system
Maybe now the MPAA will can inject some sanity into movie ratings. Ths notion that a naked body is somehow more damaging to young people than mindless violence was the true obscenity.
Can't speak to this topic as I am not knowledgeable about Mr. Valenti or this industry. However, I am VERY interested in whether The News Hole will do an obit for M. Rostropovich who died yesterday. Now THERE is someone to remember. His passion for his country and liberty were as amazing as his passion for the cello. I'll miss him. Guys - will you honor him, do you think?
I do find it interesting that not one of the obituaries I've read of the man mention his vigorous efforts before Congress to block Sony from bringing their destructive new device, the VCR, into the country. He argued that if VCR's weren't outlawed, the movie industry would be completely destroyed, and likened their impact on the movie industry to the impact of the Boston strangler on women home alone. And who can forget his charming fight against peer to peer software, against internet video, and in favor of the consumer rights nightmare that is the DMCA.
