First Casualty of the 'DC Madam' Scandal

Posted: Friday, April 27, 2007 11:35 PM by Countdown

Wow, talk about "take out the trash night!"

AIDS activists protest against a speech by Tobias in Bangkok in 2004

Friday night, after all us media types have gone home for the weekend, Deputy Secretary of State Randall L. Tobias, whose emphasis on abstinence in AIDS prevention programs has been so controversial, tries to quietly exit, stage left.

Tobias submitted his resignation one day after he confirmed to ABC News that he had been a customer of the escort agency run by the so-called "D.C. Madam."

ABC's Brian Ross reports:
Tobias' private cell number was among thousands of numbers listed in the telephone records provided to ABC News by Jeane Palfrey, the woman dubbed the "D.C. Madam," who is facing the federal charges. In an interview to be broadcast on "20/20" next Friday, Palfrey says she intends to call Tobias and a number of her other prominent D.C. clients to testify at her trial.

"I'm sure as heck not going to be going to federal prison for one day, let alone, four to eight years, because I'm shy about bringing in the deputy secretary of whatever," Palfrey told ABC News.
Ooh, she sounds like trouble!

Meanwhile, the old 'Friday Night News Dump' trick is far less effective since "us media types" figured out this whole blogging thing -- and Ross is certainly among the best doing it.

Hey! Another day, another Republican sex scandal! Boy, the "Moral Party" has got some 'splainin' to do! At least this time it involves women! The first week of Psych 101 teaches us "You are what you hate" This is why the GOP hates gays, and anything else that appears immoral. They are hypocrites that depend on fear mongering and the ignorance of the electorate to win elections, and pad their pockets.
This guy's the deputy secretary of gettin it ON!!! A quick wikipedia search of this guy show he once sat on the board of Conoco Phillips...he's a Bush oil cronie. What a shocker.
How shocking! I never in a million years thought I'd see such scandal involving a republican leader. The republicans are of the party of God, or so I've been told. Release all the names. It would be entertaining. Maybe we could even impeach some elected officials. Oh, the memories. Let the trials begin! I'm not really serious about the trials, but you know the old saying, "What goes around, comes around"? Well, everything is coming around for this hypocritical republican bunch in Washington. They're just reaping what they've sown. And we shouldn't judge, lest we be judged. But I'm only human, and it's hard not to at least want to judge them.
the age of arrogance is over......ordinary people are no longer being manipulated by arrogant ones......katrina showed the world how incompetence in this administration has affected all of us, and imus was the tipping point.....the age of reason is here and it's about time......
Maybe he should have "abstained" from "massages."
More scandal after scandal, corruption of every kind, pedophilia, infidelity, theft of national resources, lying and manipulation, religious right leader seeking male prostitutes....WHAT GIVES!!! we need to flush all this trash out. Ruinous policies, handouts to the rich, and political bullying in every cornner..The party of God appears to have turned their backs and are serving something or someone else. However, ask around and someone will tell us that Halliburton is a Christian organization. It is not surprising that they have done such a poor job in managing Walter Reed: http://prairieweather.typepad.com/big_blue_stem/2007/03/walter_reed_hal.html
How come you took off all the "watch video" links underneath each number for Countdown?
And once again, the Republicans come up with another "master of ironies" to add to their Hall of Shame...looking forward to hearing coverage of THIS one next week, Keith!
Yep G.O.P. means Grand Old Perverts. Surprise surprise surprise. As they say at Buzzflash .com "So many Republican hypocrites...so little time
Well if this doesn't beat all!! And I thought for sure it would be Alberto Gonzalez' resignation that would come Friday night!! Well, I suppose the republicans had a difficult choice to make in which lying sack of s**t in their Administration would be the one to resign on THIS Friday night. I'm with Jane, Southern Mississippi, it is almost impossible to not want to judge this lying bunch of criminals. "The party of values and morality" - HAH!!
I try to find the good in everything. Sometimes it is easy and sometimes it takes a little ingenuity to fine the good. So here is what I can say about Tobias: He's not so bad, at least he did it with a girl!
Randy Tobias was former CEO of Eli Lilly here in my hometown. Mitch Daniels, another former Lilly CEO and Bush appointee as Director of Office of Management and Budget left quietly from service in the bush admin. He retruned to run and win the Governors race here in Indiana. His departure was better timed than Tobias though. The Enron scandal was reaching its peak and Daniels was being scrutinized back in indiana for an supposed insider trading deal in which he made out pretty good. Daniels sat on the board of a local power company and sold his shares in the company shortly before the merger. As luck would have it, the stock took a sharp dive shortly after the deal was sealed leaving many employees without much of a retirement. The republican leadership in the state didn't seem too eager to look into the matter once he announced his candidacy. Perhaps being a former pharmaceutical company exec is just bad luck.
This is getting way out of hand, it's time for the Attorney General to step in and replace that nasty prosecutor who is unfairly going after this nice lady.
Tobias? The Global AIDS Coordinator for the bush administration? Maybe he was doing field research with this prostitute. Hope he wore a condom.
Republikans must be happy at least that one of their own is caught committing adultery with an adult of the opposite sex for a change.
Jane:The Democrats are the ''party of ethics'',or so I've been told by none other than Nancy Pelosi[D-Ca].Yet they refuse to allow earmark oversight on pork-laden bills actually rejecting an attempt by the GOP to have more public oversight into how campaign contributors are dircetly benefited by pork.William Jefferson[D-La],whose antics make Tobias'pale by comparison, still sits on a House committee after the Democrats promised the American people that they would restore ''dignity''and ''ethics''to the ''peoples House''Alan Mollahan[D-WVA],who is under investigation by the FBI for corruption resulting from Reid-like real estate sweetheart deals that benefited campaign contributors, still sits on his Senate committee.Dianne Feinstein[D-Ca] has quietly stepped down from the Senates military construction appropriations committee after it was revealed by the San Francisco Chronicle[hardly a rightwinged rag] and others[including ROLL CALL] that her billionare husband,Richard Blum, was being handed fatcat Iraq no or low-bid construction projects in Iraq at her behest where he made millions. Meanwhile,a Blast from the[recent] Past:Remarks,Rep.Nancy Pelosi[D-Ca],congressional website,Jan 18,2007-''The Republicans have turned Congress into an auction house for sale to the highest bidder''.And now something from the present.ABC NEWS Apr.25,2007:''Congressional Democrats Spell Reform:CA$H"-[excerpt]-''An ABC NEWS investigation has found that Democrats appear to be taking full advantage of ''pay to play'' that they said lead to a ''culture of corruption''under Republicans..One of the Democrats biggest fundraisers was held at a privately-owned estate.Lobbyists and other big donors had to pay as much as 28,000$ to have dinner and access to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrat leaders''.From COUNTDOWNS ''The Rudy Guliani Memorial Ministry of Fear''Dept.,we have the Democrat South Carolina state senator Todd Rutherford, whose remarks in support of Obama this morning[CSPAN,Apr.28,2007],were timed to drag out phony racist whipping boys again,as usual, the GOP as target.Urging his largely black audience to back Barak,Rutherford stated that for the Republicans, attacks ''on our patriotism is a noose with which to lynch us''.Nothing to fear but fear itself,eh Keith? With trash like this eminating from the ''party of ethics'',the American people will merely suffer the same crap from the Democrats as they did under the GOP.No substantial changes of any benefit on the horizon.Pass to Tobias, and he will suffer no worse a fate than Clintons former advisor Dick Morris, who had his own stash of hookers, former HUD Sec. Henry Cisneros[D],who paved his mistresses way with the money of American taxpayers, and the alleged ''Reverand''Jesse Jackson[D],who used RAINBOW-PUSH monies for his mistress and his ''love child''.This too will pass.As we readily have seen in just the few above examples, many Republicans are patent hypocrites when it comes to ''family values''.Democrats can join them when it comes to ''ethics''?Jefferson gone yet?I thought not......
Justin, it will be back soon. In the meantine, you can get all the video by clicking the "Latest Countdown Video" link on the right side of the page.
Um, popping in for a quick little 'sound byte.' While I think it's incredibly funny-and not in the ha ha way-about this Tobias fellow, folks shouldn't be so quick to be flogging the Republicans. Who knows who else is on that list, from any party. Granted, this era of the GOP do think that they are the moral compass of the world, and that their Christian God is the only God (and that they alone speak to him), so in that respect it's just one more nail in their coffin. But don't be too quick to keep laughing-I imagine they'll be a few names are there from just about every party.
Mr. Lee Holmes, the most illogical thing one can do in response to actions, particularly "questionable" actions, is to refer to the "questionable" acts of others. Its sort of like saying, "so and so did it" as a responsible answer. I teach my children better than that. Own up to your responsibilities, is what is say. Not what Clinton did, which is equally getting tiresome...or Reverend Jesse Jackson...on anyone else, who have engaged in ethical and/or immoral activities. I am sure, if your response to this "lastest" bit of new is to respond with issues from the past, then dont start with Clinton, Jesse, etc. I am sure you can go back to the dawn of civilization. This is coming from a person who is a equal opportunity opposer of all political parties. History tells me there is enough crap from them all to make any intelligent person gag. Peace.
Maybe he was leading them in prayer? I mean, Jesus hung out with Hookers, too. I think more Republicans should hang out with Hookers, if that's possible.
Lee, thanks for the comment on the democrats being the party of ethics. From all I'd heard before, I thought we were the party of liberal, godless, secular sinners who were inferior to the just and righteous republicans. I guess we are all really in the same boat - humans who are not perfect.
Lee is certainly correct in his observation that both parties and their reps have no shortage of ethical and moral compromise to contend with. What some of us don't like at all about republicans is the continous efforts to foist their double standards on the rest of the country through legislation and rule of law. As to end results, we see the few (read: the rich, big corps and corporate chronies)being strongly favored over the many time and again. They have no problems crossing all ethical boundries in order to make sure that the party will prevails - in the long run though, the governmental process has been taken over by the rich - left, right, and in the middle. You have to be independently wealthy to be a contender politically. Count the number of millionaires in congress and you'll find very high percentages in both houses, not to mention the other branches of government. Is it any wonder the interests of the general population seem so pitifully under-represented across the board? Thus the appeal of a Dennis Kucinich to some (if you're a democrat). The guy is from another era altogether - when government was by, of, and for the people. Very far indeed from our current political reality in the USA. Now it's individual politicians for themselves first, and the rest of us get the dregs. Count the number of ex-politicians that go on to very lucrative positions as lobbyists and consultants - the real gold is in after-office windfalls because of political connections - and the end result? More legislation favoring corporate interests - period. This happens on both sides of the aisle and is an expectation after the political life is over. Nice perk!! In the end, corruption if endemic. Hard to know how our system will continue to thrive or even survive on this basis. I think we will see a multi-party system in the not to distant future...and not a minute too soon.
I guess we should be at least be happy he was playing around with grown women instead of drunkenly texting young boys eh? Let me guess rehab and finding God (again) is next.
to me, it is so funny all republicans' reaction to such things are all the same: "Clinton did the same thing". LOL. a few of my co-workers always use such lines for republicen's defense. I can't bleieve there are such idiots.
I don't know about where you all live, but don't you think that he could have gotten a 'massage' from a legitimate massuese? Heck, we have day spas popping up all over the place, and I know there those that travel to peoples homes. I'm sure those in 'the know' would recognize guy, but seriously, he couldn't just have a 'real' massuese come by. He had to go to an escort service? That is so funny! Lee Holmes, get serious. If I had the time and/or inclination, I'm positive I could dig up as much crap about the GOP as you have about Democrats in your post above. By posting what you have, it's like saying what Tobias did was okay-whatever. Something I learned a long time ago, and have repeated on here: Two wrongs do not make a right! Okay? It's like my kids telling me: But Mom, he got an ice cream without asking, so I should too! Grow up!
Panther X, Elkhart, Indiana - Right on!! I, in addition to many other bloggers on this site have been telling that to Lee Holmes and others for months now!! Good job!!!!
Terry, Columbia, SC - "Two wrongs don't make a right"!! I learned that at a very young age from my parents and taught my twin daughters the same. Grow up and stop using the democrats past to justify the GOP wrongs!! It's no defense and it makes no sense. We're living in "TODAY" in case you didn't notice. Looking towards Nevada and Lee Holmes and Larry - SC!!
It would seem there is no accountability for serious crimes in the Bush administration so does anyone truly believe that outside the current and fleeting shame Tobias will ever face solicitation charges? The lost billions in Iraq were not even considered important. The incompetance and lies within our criminal executive branch are discussed but does anyone seriously think there will be charges or convictions. A pardon is waiting for those with the courage and unethical demeanors to hold on until Bush is ready to clear his presidency of any possible embarrassing court appearances by his sleazy friends.
Oh, I'm missing Molly Ivins today, she'd have had a field day with all this. Would have been great if she could have seen the beginning of the implosion of the disloyal opposition's house of cards. Ya left too soon, Molly, but I'm sure you're laughin' where you're at.
Everyone's saying what I'm thinking. Just another example of the arrogant elephants thinking they can do anything they want without suffering the consequences. Release all of the names ASAP so these immoral liars get what they so richly deserve!
X-You forget that Jackson is not a thing of the past. His racist posturing during the Duke University debacle nearly allowed several innocent young men to be railroaded. It is rather, the height of ''illogic''to refuse to refer to hypocrisy when it is actively engaged in by a party whose allegiance to ''ethics''is shady at best.Did anyone truly believe that the Democrat takeover of Congress was going to usher in a new era of ethical behaviors unbeholden to government-by-lobbyist-and-corporation?Not on your life.Democrat 527 PACS have collected as much as fifty million dollars from corporate interests in just the last year, dwarfing their GOP counterparts.Throngs of lobbyists crowd into Senate and House appropriations committee hearings to get their share of the vig promised them by their Democrat underlings.[while we cannot find out what is going on as public oversight has been muzzled].''K St''. is alive and thriving under the new majority.''House For Sale'' is not a CENTURY 21 sign in front of a neatly-kept three-bedroom ,two-car garage home in upstate Indiana. It is hanging in front of the entrance to Congress. The ''illogic'',at the end of the day, eminates from those whose populist ideals when the GOP was running the show have now become muted enough to allow business as usual, when it is this very usual business that is turning our nations legislative body into a bought and paid for Politiburo. It stank when it was the GOP doing it and it stinks even worse now,as those who promised to clean up government have been exposed as phony,money-grubbing poseurs.Mr.Smith,most assuredly, will not be going to Washington.
Pam - I think you've assigned me to the wrong group. If you read my comment you'll I find fault MOSTLY but not exclusively with the GOP for the ills we suffer today. As a leftie, it's unlikely that I'd start defending republicans at this point. After Bush, we desperately need complete transparency from elected officials, and democrats will have to hold themselves to a far higher standard (than we've recently seen in congress) to win and keep winning the hearts and minds of the people. Elected representatives need to represent the people first, last, and foremost - we see serious slippage in our representative form of government and this has to stop. Corporations spend countless millions by way of lobbyists - whereas we expend nothing but our votes. Special interests win and win and win. Who can disagree? So, another thing that needs changing. For example, in reading Media Matters/Alterman today, we find that the new congressional spending bill never even mentions the fact what we're paying over 120,000 mercenaries (Blackwater corp) to help hold down the fort in Iraq (called 'independent contractors). So, nothing mentioned about the withdrawal of this vastly expensive force at all - who knew? Give me more tranparency please. Personally I hope for a democratic sweep all around -best opportunity in years. As Alterman says, the front runners probably can't win, but any good second tier democratic presidential candidate can win hands down - maybe so? I'm all for millionaires in government - after all, they've got the time and the money - but do they really need more? However, they do need to work for the benefit of their constituents a little more religiously. And finally, I'm all for sh*tcanning the electoral college right here and now - let's live with the results of the popular vote, period. I'm tired of my vote not counting in SC. Anyway, that's how it was writ 'lo those many years ago. Sidebar - Hillary declared today that congress has little stomach for impeachment. Apparently that dog won't hunt, as Fred Thompson would say (NO - anyone but Fred!).
Terry, SC- I totally agree with you that our reps should actually represent us, but we let them get away with not doing it. We the People get tired, we get lazy, we're working too hard and get distracted and let the slippery slope take us away to where we find ourselves now. We got here via a journey, not just an incident. IF we get off our duffs and make enough noise, things change, if we abandon the field as we've been doing for some time now, leaving it to someone else or being defeatist and assuming that it's too far gone for little ol' us to make a difference, then the momentum stays with them and goes where they want it to. We have leverage, there are fulcrums, (fulcra?, fulcrae?), we need to get up and use them. Ike noted that once the country wakes up and gets excercised about something, the politicians have to get out of our way and give us what we demand. And BTW the only way your vote in SC does count is because of the electoral college, you have too small a population to make a difference any other way. The only explanation I"ve heard that was actually accessable was comparing the electoral college handicapping system to the World Series: The best of a series is more likely to find the best than a single championship game where you can have a fluke or a single mistake making a critical difference. A lot of folks aren't all that bright or dedicated to finding out the truth, ( look at the hoaxes that get emailed around 'cause people don't take 3 minutes to check them first on one of the hoax sites), a good, well timed lie could swing the momentum of an election if the vote wasn't baffled, (literally), by the EC. New Hampshire, South Carolina and the other small states wouldn't be on the political map if it was a straight plebicite, they'd be totally shut out. The high population areas would be the only ones that any politician could afford to pay any attention to and the only ones that would have their interests represented. The college is annoying, but it's a more fair handicapping than anything else anyone's ever come up with. It's too late in the administration to mess with impeachment, (dammit), no matter how richly it's deserved, but a ton of prosecutions for violations of the Hatch Act should definitely be on the boards.
Shandy - you are correct. The electoral college is the mechanism that has essentially kept the GOP in control for far too long. High population areas tend to be democratic whereas rural areas and the South (remember those former conservative democrats) tend to be republican....did I say tend to? - pretty much exclusively republican is what I meant. I live here and I know whereof I speak. The intensive gerimandering efforts to re-draw voting districts by party was also greatly successful - and yes, the democrats did it in Texas. Looking at Texas by the way, Austin is democratic while the rest of the state is solidly republican. It's fair to say the the electoral college has played a decisive role in keeping the GOP on top, with the help of 5 republicans on the Supreme Court (until recently that is) - this issue will arise again big time in 2008 and particularly so regarding the presidential vote - the democrats really have to chose their warrrior hero very carefully in my opinion. Those we may like the best just might not be electable - given the power of the electoral college. My finale - without the preemptive invasion of a sovereign nation and ensuing war in Iraq Bush and the rest of his minions would be nothing (their true worth). The war enhanced his presidential powers by magnitudes and gave that rotten enclave of social misfits protections and privilages that not even the best of us should ever be privy to (much less the worst of us). With great cunning they capitalized on this manufactured war - and was this all a coincidence??? They'll never answer for it, so history will decide.
why is it that the news media hasn't talk about what Dianne Feinstein[D-Ca] has done? I find it funny that the liberal media hasn't picked up on it... Why is that???? Is it that the media ONLY picks put what the republicans do? I can't WAIT to SEE who else used the madame...The media WON'T be able to hide this one!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, the Republicans are no different than Democrats when it comes to being human. Personally, I'd like to hear more about the other parties. Good or bad. I don't think the two party system is any better than a one party system.
Lee, do you think all your comparisons will make me change my mind about the Republicans being the party of 'Do as I say, not as I do'? It just affirms my feelings about what hypocrites they are.
Hello Everyone, This is a very unfortunate situation that our Nation is faced with. I read most of your interesting comments before concluding that my time was probably being wasted and that I really needed to get about responsible business. One thing that I thought about while reading most of these comments was similar comments that can be read on the walls of toilet stalls. Another thing I thought about coincided with some of your comments, we're all human and capable of making severe mistakes. Than, I considered the fact that the people involved in this mess are probably the cream of the crop to represent our Nation, otherwise they would not be occupying the office they hold. After that thought, the question becomes, "Can any other person or group of people not involved in the issue at hand have conducted himself or herself any better? A second question is, "When considering our current lives, does anyone of us have a clean and clear slate to be throwing stones at any government official involved in the pending scandal?" Of course, the answer is probably not. With that said, this occasion for a scandal may be an opportunity for those with a repentant heart to take the time to pray for those government officials to overcome the dark forces they fight against. After all, all of our lives may be under direct or indirect attack from the influences of the dark forces plaguing our government officials. In other words, how much of a difference can we make to better our Nation by sharing prayers as opposed to ill-fated remarks and or comments?
I think it is awesome that she is calling out the very same people who are trying to prosecute her. She is only showing people how messed up our justice system is. This guy was taking a stand on celabacy but I geuss since he is a married man he can have sex with anyone. That is not how it works. Someone who is opposed to having sex before marriage should also be opposed to frequenting there friendly neiborhood brothel.
