Special Comment Tonight: "Compromised"

Posted: Wednesday, May 23, 2007 3:30 PM by Countdown

Keith Olbermann will deliver a Special Comment tonight on the "compromise" struck between the Democratic leadership and the White House over the latest troop funding bill...

Here's a preview...
"The Democratic leadership has, in sum, claimed a compromise with the Administration, in which the only things truly compromised are the trust of the voters, the ethics of the Democrats, and the lives of our brave, and doomed, friends, and family, in Iraq.

You, the men and women elected with the simplest of directions - Stop The War - have traded your strength, your bargaining position, and the uniform support of those who elected you… for a handful of magic beans."

Let's see...November, December, January, February, March, April, May...yup, its been at least 6 months...go get 'em Keith.
Sounds like KO's going to do exactly what he said he would do post the 2006 election: take the Dems to task when they screw up. Go, Keith, go...the reality-based community is with you...
I have to agree with Keith. The Democratic party made a big noise about Americans speaking loud and clear when they won the majority of seats in Congress. And what do they do? Blink and George jumps all over it. At what cost is this latest "compromise"? How many more deaths? How many more lives, soldiers and civilians? At what price--not just dollars and cents? We need to get out and get out now, not in September, not at the end of the year, not some time in the future. I support our military men and women, but I can not support a war that has no plan for victory overall much less a win on a small scale. Yes, things have turned around in some areas but the wins are minute compared to the losses repeatedly occurring. Enough is enough and if the Democrats aren't getting it then we need to find some representatives who do.
A compromise suggests the democrates got something in return. This is not a compromise it is a total abdication of thier responsibility. I am sure many democrates will vote against this thing but voting isn't enough when your in charge. It should never see the light of day. Can a democrate filibuster when democrates are in charge? It would be a good move for a presidential candidate.
To be blunt this is the beginning of the Republicans taking back their chances of winning the 2008 Presidential election no matter how bad it gets in Iraq.
Damn right.
The Democrats cave in. And today, 9 more Americans died in Iraq. If these Democrats do not do the work we sent them to Washington for, then they should be replaced in November 2008 by Democrats with spines.

Go, Keith, go! It is uncomprehensible why the Dems won't take Mr. 28% Approval Rating on. The public is behind them and won't buy the inevitable "the Dems are taking bullets out of the soldiers guns!" line that would be spewed by Rove et al should they actually demonstrate a spine and stand up to Bush on war funding.
You Go Keith! Looking forward to hearing it.
I'll be missing the live special comment tonight, but I agree Keith. I'm long past sick and tired of political rope-a-dope. I'm leaning to John Edward's slant on this.....keep sending the same bill originally offered until this Repub party is so embarassed they either pass it or go home....but alas, my party is as lame as the elephant crowd. Good G-d, does anyone inside the beltway have a shred of decency or self respect anymore?
They didn’t ‘compromise’ Keith… They’ve literally been IN ON IT right from the start! What you are looking at is a pretend government that plays “good guy and bad guy” at the behest of the Israeli and oil lobbies. As one blogger said, “We have the best government money can buy!” It’s not just the administration that belongs in NUREMBERG, it’s ALL OF THEM.
I have heard that ALL of Congress is and has always been in bed with each other. They only put on a show for the voters but don't give a hoot about anything but their future and power. I guess we are seeing this first hand with the Iraq funding. They could have cut off spending but they didn't what a sham of a government, NOT by nor FOR the people, we have!
Magic beans or magic fertilizer?
I think you may be a bit over-critical towards the Democrats. Its true they promised that which they could not deliver, but my concern is that you misunderestimate Clueless-in-Crawford -- who is ready to bluff with every dollar (and life) of someone else's to win his bluff. The end effect might well have been troops paid with IOU's rather than paychecks and bullets rather than body armor -- and I know I'm not ready to take that gamble with our troops' lives, even if Dubya is.
Perhaps, if it is not too late, you can add as a preface the gag from Monty Python entitled "Politicians -- An Apology" -- the one that reads, in part, as follows: "We would like to apologize for the way in which politicians are represented in this protgramme. It was never our intention to imply that politicians are weak-kneed, political time-servers who are concerned more with their personal vendettas and private power struggles than the problems of government.... nor to imply at any stage that they are squabbling little toadies without an ounce of concern for the vital social problems of today.... We are sorry if this impression has come across."
Did you read Dennis Kucinich's speech before the House today explaining the real reason we went to war? It explains Cheney's recent visit to Iraq. Please let Iraq keep their oil, they gave up so much. We didn't do this to make oil companies more prosperous. His speech is at http://kucinich.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=65844
While your at it Keith, please mention how they [the dems] unbelievably pulled the wording from their new bill that would have expressly prohibited the administration from attacking Iran, as if that was part of the original war authorization. If that’s not like giving this trigger-happy administration a green light to expand the war I don’t know what is. It literally screams that they [the do nothing dems] don’t care if they get us into another even more unjust and bloody war. Isn’t it great to wake up tone day and finally realize your government is a spitting image of everything it once said it stood against?
They stabbed us in the back ,Keith, please, give em hell tonight. There will be more body bags, more blood on their hands, but worst of all they have deceived the voices that cried out for help in electing them.I called Jack Murtha's Office and thanked that office today.I have been a member of this Party all my life as have a lot of others.Handed out fliers in the South for Jack Kennedy,I was 14 years old couldn't even vote.It was in South Carolina. Senator Ernest Fritz Hollings helped deliver the state to Kenenndy as well as help feed the hungry. The Democrats were for the poor and the rights of the those "who did not have".The poor folks that could not get that 2/S,Cheney ,you cowards can have, parades, wave flags on special days to pretend you care, but when all is said and done we know what you stood for.But you Reid and Polosi because you lead this group of cowardly turks,go,join Lieberman's Club Boys and Girls, give your guy,Mr. Veto a hug a Kiss and a big hip hip hooray, cheer, for the drinks you never pay for anyway. While your trying to wash your hands like"Lady MacBeth" or Pontius Pilate after the vote remember to look all those kids, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers,American and Iraqi and the Relatives in the Eye from the flag draped funerals,Walter Reeds, and Pictures from Iraq. Not one of you knows what even the mission is we are sending them their for because their is none?Where's the goaline? You never knew where it was and you make this shit up as you go along! MSNBC keep broadcasting it more and more like in Vietnam every night, while we sit down to eat or whatever, all the troops and what is really going on.And please at the end of the week could we have the tally of the wounded and KIA on the Sunday evening News like was done with Nam as well as how ever many Iraqis have died. The press looks like it is the last voice of freedom here and there is not much of that left.
And down they go. It must suck to have to backpedal all of the time, heck just turn around and run.
We Americans are NOT looking for a Democratic Party solution - we want a solution. The rejection of the administration and the Republicans sent the Party in Power (now the Democrats) a very simple yet profound message "Stop This Damn War, NOW!" - The fools in the Democratic Party are playing politics and working for sound bites, they clearly are not working for the citizens who elected them - it will soon be time to throw the entire lot out.
Mary, thanks for the link to Kucinich's speech and the body of the Iraqi Oil Law. After reading the body of that work, my blood is BOILING. I have read law over the years that upset me, but not like this. This is prima fascia evidence of CRIME. It can no longer be avoided: The GOP must die. Period. Your party needs to be dismantled and your leaders put in prison FOREVER. And Dems? Every one of you twits that voted to let Bush keep playing at war HAVE CUT YOUR OWN THROATS. The GOP won't be taking your place though. But WE THE PEOPLE will remember the betrayers and you WILL be replaced. This again proves that the underdog is only one running who GETS IT. Rep. Kucinich, should you win the probably already rigged primary, YOU HAVE MY VOTE. You are the ONLY one interested in the truth and protecting the Constitution. The rest of you Republican and Democratic Party BASTARDS can now officially KISS MY JEFFERSONIAN ASS. You have all collectively broken the social contract with the citizens and WE now owe you NOTHING. I am looking into immigration policies for skilled workers in foreign countries where I won't be killed on sight for being an American. Thanks for disrespecting the service to this country of my grandfather in WWII and the death of his brother in the European theater of operations as well as the death of my uncle in Viet Nam. YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGIVEN.
And when the EVIL in the White House uses nukes . . . you have no one to blame but CONGRESS at this point, in particular, the Senate. Remember that. And that I told you so.
In the past I have said that this war is being fought not in the streets of Baghdad, but in the jungles of Vietnam, and I am right. The Democrats had no choice in this. We are dealing with a Party who will use any attempt to cut off funding for our troops to energize their base. They will harken their followers back to the time of the Hippies, and the anti-War protests. Heaven forbid we even think about simply cutting off the funding. Nothing short of impeaching this President, which also does not have the votes, will end this war. If the Dems stop the funding, the Department of Defense will use every scrap of money they can in order to keep it going. Secretary Gates will go without a salary if necessary. The President will hand over every last scrap of spare change they can find in between the sofa cushons in order to keep it going. All the while, they will blame every single death on the Democrats not funding their petty little vendetta. Like it or not, they will use this to destroy the Democrats. HOWEVER, by October, the Democrats will have the upper hand. Too many Republicans are vulnerable to their next election bid. They'll be scared that standing with Bush will end their careers. In fact, the Republicans will, by then, be in the ultimate political Catch-22. If they support the War, they energize the Democrats in their states to oust them. If they vote against the War, they will loose the support of a party which now equates ending the War with defeat. Suddenly, all the propaganda that they have been spewing since the Vietnam Conflict will come back to haunt the Republican Party. No longer can they say that they are strong on Defense because they're willing to go on the Offense and stay there. Now is not the time for this. In Politics as it is in Warfare, the key is not what the objective is, but when to strike. The time to end the War is not now. It is in October. It is cruel, heartless, mean and very, very real. In October, the ravens will come home to roost.
No Swimming! The Gene Pool is closed until further notice! Cheney's are propagating.
What are these "magic beans," anyway, hallucinogens? If the democrats think they can be re-elected in 2008 after this sorry performance, then they should think again. Their latest failure to deliver on what they were elected for practically begs for some third-party or independent candidate to emerge. Am I missing something here, or weren't the presidencies of both Richard Nixon and George W. Bush the proximate result of similar democratic ineptitude? Who was it (Hillary?) that suggested the republicans were running Congress like a plantation? It now appears that truer words were never spoken. Since the 2006 election, the only difference I can see is that the slaves actually seem to like it.
This Democratic Congress was the last, best hope for resurrecting our Constitutional form of government. Its predecessor legislated away all of the individual liberties the Bill of Rights was intended to protect and delegated unprecedented authority to an Executive who is most kindly described as a "failure." Now, this Congress has failed us, too. Innocent people are still dying. Habeas Corpus is still MIA. Torture and extraordinary rendition are still the law of the land, and, this past week, Our Decider decreed himself the Supreme Almighty Commander Guy in case of ... emergency? What will it take for Congress to uphold its Constitutional duty to check and balance this guy?
Keith, You are a smart guy, and good looking too, but why are you hounding the Dem's on this Iraqi spending bill! I agree, I am not happy with there stupid thinking on this, but there may be a bigger picture to see through this forest! They seem to making sure that this administration OWN's this war, not them. Also, maybe there is some raises in it for the troops? The bottom line here is to make sure THIS administration owns the failure of this war to the end, and if he veto's it, well your next guess on what will happen is as good as any other blogger!
OP-ED: The Bush 'BS' of FEAR as Democrats Fold! As Bush tries to resell and or justify his 'Deceitful War Doctrine' in Iraq; Our Congress Caves-into the Lies, Deceit and Political trickery for War funding! This is the Great American Sell-Out. A War fought with never ending lies to justify! Americans went to the polls and voted for honesty with congressional oversight. Instead, our 'elected' officials will craft more lies for killing. Iraq has become the true 'killing fields' of the middle east while the majority of Americans are quite 'sickened' by this deceptive war that was built on lies. Unfortunately, The great 'American Sell-Out' is coming like a freight train running down the track. American 'voters' had sent a clear message to our politicians in Washington. That message has been ignored by both parties. Americans 'voted' Democratic not because they suddenly believed that this party would end this Culture of Corruption. Americans voted Democratic based on promises to get us out of Iraq. A War Doctrine that was 'built' and 'sold' on lies, fear, deceit with political trickery. Once again, American wishes have been Sold-Out to the Lies-Deals of Washington. Billions of US tax dollars have been lost, stolen and or just wasted in Iraq with NO consequences and or oversight. This week; there would be NO meaningful restrictions to the Bush-Cheney Deceptive War Funding request. Democrats intend to 'draft' an Iraq war-funding bill without any time lines for the withdrawal of U.S. troops. Democratic leaders have 'committed to' and 'sold-out' the majority of Americans wishes for an immediate end to this slaughter in IRAQ. Tens of thousand are dead, tens of thousand maimed with millions of innocent Iraqi displaced based on a War built on lies, deceit and political trickery. The Democratic Party were propelled into power by rising antiwar sentiment, yet they will sign-onto another 'war funding' bill with NO timelines, NO preconditions, and NO Congressional oversight. Make NO mistake here, Billions have been wasted, stolen and or simply LOST in Iraq. Democrats will approve another 'blank check' drawn on the China-Asian credit card. Like it or not, this Deceptive War in Iraq will go on! Each and every Senator who votes for additional 'funding' is absolutely complicit to the lies, deceit and political tricky that continues to 'market' this war on the fear card. Make NO mistake here; NOT one-(1) innocent Iraqi was ever involved in 9-11, yet this body count continues. The Democratic leadership has Caved-into this 'deceptive war party' of liars! Criticism in time of war is 'essential' to the maintenance of any kind of democratic government. – Robert Taft In war, 'truth' is the first casualty. – Aeschylus Edwin Anthony Dalecki, Jr. Lewes Beach, Delaware EdwinAnthony@verizon.net
Years ago, a popular television show named "the x-files" had an interesting episode. "Terrorists" flew planes into skyscrapers. That was before September 11, 2001. The final installment of "X-files," a box-office hit featured bees engineered by the government released into the environment. While bees in the movie were tied into a government "alien" conspiracy, now we have a problem with the bees dying due to viruses. Where was the dictatorship movie where we lose our way of life and get this dictatorship? Did I miss something?
Crazytown, Just two quick things. First of all, the Democratic leadership needs to be reminded what is at stake here. So, yes, hound away at them. The second is very simple as well. Right now is not the time. This is not a Parliament which rules by decree. Rather this is a Congress with limits on what it can and cannot do. This is not the end, people, but a battle which has ended in a draw. Soon. . .so very soon, this Congress will hit this issue again, and by then Bush won't be able to hide behind the Party anymore. By then, most Republicans will know that they either help end the war, or next November they loose their jobs.
Years ago when a team broke under pressure, the usual joke was that the franchise was being sold to the Philippines and would change their name to "The Manila folders" . The Democrats proved that they could fold under the pressure of a beaten down, lame duck president. The really stood up for the millions or Americans that put them into power with the mandate of ending the expensive and utterly useless Iraq War. With friends like them, who needs the Republicans?
Hello Congress, You need to WAKE UP! Bush and Cheney should be JAILED based on all the lies for this so-called war in Iraq. These 'Criminals' should have their BOOTS on the ground. Their entire family and close friends should also have their BOOTS in the sand. Instead, all these 'Bush Stupids' sit back, run their mouths, party, celebrate and applaud this Deceitful War Doctrine. Each and every person associated with this war should sign-up and relieve the troops on extended tours. Iraq has been turned into a 'killing field' while Bush and Cheney spout off the lies, fear, deceit and political trickery that led this country into a war of choice. War with a country that posed absolutely NO danger and or Threat to Americans. All the 'Bush Stupids' need to 'shut-up' and 'sign-up' for their own vacation spot in Iraq. Americans have been 'sold' a very bad bill of goods from Bush, Cheney and this Inept Congress that was recently elected to end this farce called IRAQ. A 'half-trillion' dollars to fund Burger Kings in Iraq while Americans struggle to fill their tanks, buy food, maintain shelter with low wages and NO health care. What a SAD joke on Americans! CTL+ALT+DEL = The Bring Home the Troops Stop the War Policy of MY Cowardly Party, Flush.....You betrayed all of us who voted to stop this insanity and entrusted you do it.Who is left to support the troops, the same guy who there when it wasn't vogue,Jack Murtha. You cowards ran from a veto,a veto, not an IED,not an RPG, or Bullet a G.. amn Veto and worse yet a Liar C.C. and betrayed, those who elected you.All of you should resign you have no dignity or honor.Take that honorable title jargon and shove it where the sun don't shine.
Todd, New Orleans, LA, I applaud your posts.I am as pissed and hurt as I have been in a long time. What a sell out I bet old Rove and Dubya and Dick are a laughing there asses off at us.We have been betrayed by those we trusted. However on the lighter side,Don't worry ever about them using nukes I don't think they will REMEMBER the LAUNCH CODES.Remember they can't remember!
No matter how often the libs try and make the American public (and themselves!) believe that there was some kind of a mandate about the Iraq war in the Nov elections or that "the will of the people" is for us to get out of Iraq, I had to break the news but there was NEVER anything like this on the ballots! So now we're all seeing the truth which is that all the Dems care about is getting back into power in 2008. Winning in Iraq is NOT their goal. We're now seeing that Pelosi and company are all a bunch of hypocrites!
Why, oh why, don't the Dems raise the ante. They are folding their winning hand. This is why we worked our butts off and prayed to get them elected. They should send a bill to Bush that he's really not going to like, and a worse one after that. He'll learn, like a spoiled brat, that he needs to sign one of them to get the money. It's BUSH that's stopping the money. This needs to be repeated every 10 minutes.
You know what? Yesterday when all this happened, I thought "And what did the Dems get for caving in like this? Magic beans?" I did not vote for Democrats to see this happen! Luckily, the ones I voted for were not party to this outrage, but that's just me. Nice to know I'm not the only one who's furious about this. Give 'em the full measure of your righteous anger, Keith. I'm looking forward to it.
I realize my ideas won't be popular, but...The Dems did make a lot of noise after the election without having the votes to back up the noise...Did I miss something after the 2006 election when the Dems had only something like a 232-201 majority in the House, far from the 287 votes needed to override a King George veto...and the Dems also had a slim 50 seats plus one independent Democrat who votes Republican to 49 majority...far from the 66 votes needed to override the King's veto...I was saying back in December 2006 the Dems don't have the juice or power to get the Republicans to break away from the King and influence the war policy and funding...the King is to stubborn to change his mind even when something like 70% of Americans want to start bringing our troops home...Did anyone really think the Dems would get Bush to sign a bill with timelines and withdrawal dates or have his fellow Republicans jump ship and override the King's veto?...the Republicans are like lemming heading to the ocean in mass...all the Dems could do is keep sending the same bill to the King until the funding for the troops was a real issue and try to blame Bush for vetoing all the bills with all the money he requested and hope more people blame the King and the Republicans who continue to support him instead of blaming the Dems...the Dems had two choices in my mind: the Dems could simply send the King a bill with no withdrawal dates or even benchmarks with teeth, basically give the King what the King wants...or keep sending the King bills he would only veto and the Dems won't have the votes to override the King and either way we all lose, especially the troops, since the troops would be underfunded eventually while still fighting...are we are stuck with a blame game which is now in the Dems court...when did the Dems ever have the power to end the war without the help of the Republicans? Again, what did I miss?...and the Republicans, probably lead by Doctors Evil, Chaney and Rove, kept the lemming Republicans in line...did anyone really think the Dems could end the war themselves without having the votes in the Senate or the House to take on the King...I never thought the Dems had a chance to make any noise...if anything, the Dems didn't want to risk being the ones who cut off funding for the troops...and how many of us want the troops not funded while they are still fighting the civil war in Iraq...What options did the Dems really have? Keep rolling the rock up the hill and have it fall back down on them? How long could they really do that? Edwards can say keep sending the King the same bill but he doesn't have to run for re-election in the House or Senate...he may not even get the Democratic nomination...Trust me, I have lost faith in the two party system...neither party is doing the will of the people...only maneuvring for position in the 2008 election...which is the real crime....worrying about re-elections and positioning for the 2008 presidential election, instead of listening to the majority of the American people...the Dems should take their share of the blame...the King called their bluff...but what does the King have to lose? He is already naked...the lemmings are too afraid to hold the King accountable...and the Dems never had the power to influence policy...the Dems keep rolling the rock up the hill and the rock keeps falling on them, on the American people, the troops, and the two party system...and now the King trots out the old war horse that al Qaeada in Iraq wants to kill Americans...information from 2005 he suddenly declassifies to give a commencement speech...and why are we suppose to believe the King now after all his lies...shocking that al Qaeda wants its followers to kill Americans...all the King has is the fear card...and his lies...and the Dems lack of votes..
B A, I have no problem with anything you have said except I should caveat that I never trusted them. Both parties a full of scumbags, but the Neocons are evil AND Republicans. And I mean EVIL as in the the Left Hand of Satan Evil. I had hoped the non-Neocons own sense of self-preservation would take over, but once again the venal nature of politicians and lawyers trumps common sense and the fundamentals good Constitutional governance.
Sigh...Let me try this again. I feel like most Americans have no clue how our political system works, which is why Bush got away with murder (figuratively). This is not the end of the debate, and it is not the end of the storm. This is a regrouping, that is all. Bush has nothing to loose because he won't be running for reelection. So long as the Republicans sit there and support him, they cannot end the war. They will continue to put preasure on Bush. This is not over, please stop acting as if this is the end of the debate, and an end of Democratic attempts to end this war. They will fight Bush in other manners. To start with, they will be pushing another, stricter bill soon. They've just split the funding from the benchmarks. That bill is being written up now. They're putting together a bill that will be tying reconstruction monies to political work in Baghdad. This isn't over.
Keith, Don't exclude the 900+ U.S. Contractors that died in Iraq - the U.S. body count is way over 4,000!
I am voting the alaskan senator for president this time around and God bless you Mr. O for telling it like it is
Thank you keith
Thank you Keith! Thank you, thank you thank you!
Right on! Ever thought about running for office Keith?
I cried tonight as I listened to Kieth I was full of hope but now I'm full of fear just what was intended to happen, but not of Usama BinLaden but of our own goverment and the shadow government that really run's the show in DC. God help us please
Thank you, Mr. Olbermann. I've been struggling with my overwhelming feelings of disgust and despair over the Dems caving on this bill, but was having trouble putting those feelings into coherent words. Thank you for doing that for me. As usual, your comments are exactly correct, well spoken, and to the point. Its wonderful that we have you to voice those feelings on the air. Its horrible that anyone needs to do that. we have been betrayed. Fool me once....(and NOT the George W. Bush mangling of the phrase). My only hope is that the Dem leadership was listening.
Keith...thanks for your views....and AMEND. this administration has killed the party and the USA in the world view. The Dems need to get their act together, but I am with you...fire them if they don't stand their ground. Watch you every night...so keep the show going. I was in the USMC 1970-1976 and still cry when I seen the Marines killed every night. This war is not a war...it is insanity created by a sick president!!
Holy cow, Keith! You absolutely rock! Why is it you are so willing to say what absolutely no one else in the media will? Probably because you speak the truth so plainly. Do you think any of those to whom you were referring were watching? I sure hope so. Thank you, Thank you!
