Countdown Wednesday: Fear and Loathing

Posted: Wednesday, May 23, 2007 8:14 PM by Countdown
Filed Under:

Fear We Go Again: The President has a secret. He claims Osama Bin Laden was setting up a terror cell in Iraq, from which to strike America. Of course this was in 2005, two years after Mr. Bush kindly opened up Iraq so terrorists could go there. Plus, the Democrats reeling after their Congressional leadership gives away the Iraq store to the President. What do the actual anti-war Democrats do now? And why did Senator Clinton remain silent today?

Enter Monica
: Accusations of inaccuracy and a lack of candor in sworn testimony. Admissions of inappropriate political litmus tests for prosecutors, and an unusual qualification to be White House liaison for the Department of Justice... she was class president. Monica Goodling goes to the Hill.

ODDBALL
: An orangutan rampage in Taiwan and the world's oldest wrestler in India, it's a crazy video edition of Oddball tonight.

Operation Provocation
: With all the real war in the mid-east, today war games were added. U.S. policy-makers again struggling to confront and understand yet another mid-east adversary, and one that really does have nuclear material. A show of force off the coast of Iran.

Feud With A View: Rosie O'Donnell and Elizabeth Hasselbeck
finally slug it out live on The View, providing five minutes of the most uncomfortable television in broadcasting history.

WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD
: A convicted murderer gives a shout-out to his favorite football team -- as his last words before execution... the baseball player who threatened his wife by text-messaging a phyoto of his handgun... and the State of Virginia, which welcomes the grandson of the Vice President of the United States into the world with a big stop sign.

A Special Comment
: The Democrats' Neville Chamberlain Moment, the President's political triumph on the backs of the service men and women in Iraq, and the political earthquake most of the politicians can't even hear, because they are too busy congratulating themselves... too loudly. VIDEO/TRANSCRIPT

To think that when she made history by being the first female speaker that now she is a disgrace. She will be know in history as the first female speaker to accomplish nothing, way to go Nancy!
Stop Calling this a war, it is an OCCUPATION. Stop Calling it an "insurgency" as 99.9% are Iraqis whose lives and civility we shattered. Stop calling it "support the troops" and instead call it "support our illegal occupation. Most of all, stop calling everything in the world that happens against us TERRORISM. It's funny how our funding of Bin Ladin and Saddam, Our false war in Vietnam and Iraq, Our covert operations all over the world, our Iran contra scandal selling arms to um... IRAN, our admitted use of the CIA to send viruses into the soviet banking system to topple their government in 1990, our kicking the doors in of every home in Baghdad, and our TORTURE of prisoners ALL (as in EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM) are what, not someone terrorism???? The Dems not so secretly don't wish to pull out of Iraq cause... um... well... We're sort of all ready there and we might as well pump the country dry of oil before we leave and... well... geez, it sure does give us a nice base to fight Iran which is what Israel wants us to do for them and well... that can only mean more oil, rampant military spending and it couldn't make our friends the Saudis any more happy. There is a villainous, divisive, and inhuman underlying nod between all those in power that understands and is in full agreement in what this is all about. We here (THE FREEK'EN PEOPLE) are only along for the ride. It's as if we've all been taken prisoner on some sort of crusade of theirs. A crusade just as likely to end with us holding hands in the final hour as the bombs fall at the start of WWIII, as it is with some logical, honorable, and indeed brave resolution to this entire bloody mess. The neocons hoped for and got the Iraqi civil war they so desperately wanted which was the only way to keep us in the region which is exactly what Bush tried to imply with the intel he "revealed" yesterday.
Mr. O, Thank you very much for your cry in the desert. It is a sad day for this country. I was naive to think that only mainstream Republicans hold party before country. Now it's clear that mainstream Dems do exactly the same. What a shame!
I giggled at the "Legally Blonde" references, but I've got to say that even Elle Woods wouldn't make hiring/firing decisions based on political leanings. Whether your shoes matched your "interview suit," certainly, but not your politics! ;) Once again I stand in awe at your way with words, sir. I'm emailing links to your Special Comment to both of my senators...who (since I live in IL now) just happen to be Durbin and Obama!
rock on KO. the 'justifications' demonstrated on MSM for why dems will vote for this crap, totally laughable. the sad part is that dems and progressives have completely bought the rightie message, that they are weak...i say, a little bit of a set up. doesnt make it right, or consistent, but exactly what the wingnuts wanted. now, how about we get dems and progressives to totally boycott faux noise....the rightie media are gonna have a field day with this on wednesday.... and of course, wont even talk about monica and gonzo.
Wasn't this 100 Billion supposed to be the funding for a full year and here it is slated only for four months? Me thinks we are about to go to war with Iran maties! Maybe the dems don't just drop everything at the last minute. Maybe Bush is about to go on another crusade? News Conference at 11:00.
Your Special Comment last night was on the money. I hope all democrats and republicans can come to realize that it's not a party issue...it's a criminal cospiracy in the works. How do we get rid of these people?
If we are to enjoy any of the bill orights or the constitution of this great nation we have to t5hrow them all out and start over with or from apool of no named people that want to take our country while we can still vote!!!!
Your Worst Person commentary re: State of Virginia was indeed a sad note for the young Cheney but you missed a much more horribly frightening fact that the boy is faced with. Look at what he has been saddled with as a grandfather!
Keith....kudos on another fantastic special comment. You continue to hit the nail square on the head with what you say during these comments. Thank you so much for being our voice, making yourself heard. Have you considered your own bid for Democratic Presidential Candidate? Maybe you could be the one to stop this war-built-on-lies. No one else has the testicular fortitude to do it, please concider the possibility. This country needs you. Also, as a foot note, I emailed you a story yesterday about some dumb criminal news....I am thinking it may be a good candidate for the Oddball segment. Thanks again Keith......keep up the good work
May I throw a little cold water on your Special Comment "Betrayal"? Truth is, KO, everyone in their high spluttering dunder is missing two points. Point A: The Democrats, in both Houses, have majorities which are not veto-proof. Point B: IBD's William O'Neill and real estate entrepreneur Robert Kiyosaki observed that, in general, our political leaders cannot read and interpret financial reports. Sadly, I will have to include most journalists and commentators in the class of those who can't deal with financial numbers. Time and again, I have noticed that speaker after speaker avoid discussing the one key which could have the potential of enlightening us citizens and allowing the majority leaders to keep up the pressure: How much money is really in the bank for operating in Iraq and how fast are we burning it? In the month and a half leading up to now, I have heard that question only once, and I think it was from CNN, not MSNBC (Naturally, I don't watch Fox Noise anymore, because it's pure hot air). We can all talk about betrayal, but talking's not going to help until we're talking truth to ourselves, each other, and the powerful. Have you heard the Chinese fable about the Emperor's beautiful clothes? The really inconvenient truth is we have to dig for it to see it. It's basic, man, we need journalists and commentators to cut through the bare-naked BS. Help us out! Start digging! Really!
#1. Can you say 'Sudetanland' in Iraqi? #2. Virtual Conjoined PMS? #3. Maybe they'll send Dubya a Quran and a Cake. #4. Love of Dubya was the only qualification necessary. #5. Finally, the truth came out. They are all in it for themselves. The score at the Colisseum? The Lions 10, the Voters 0.
Keith, ever thought about running for office?
Can we now have a No-Confidence vote on the democrats?
Keith, please stop calling Gonzales "Gonzo." Both the muppet and Hunter S. Thompson don't deserve the affiliation with this lying excuse for an A.G.
Bruce Jackson - Cape Coral: Although the amount of money being spent in Iraq and that which is currently in the bank to fund this occupation are very important pieces of information that we need to know, the loss of one American life in this senseless occupation is priceless. So one does not have to know the specific economics involved to know that we need to get out now. Regarding the Dems and their non veto-proof majority. Enough of the excuses. They should be using and inciting the power they have always laid claimed too have as Democrats, people power. If Bush won't redeploy the troops and if the Dems can't get the votes to over-ride a veto, it is time they use their people power. And on this issue they have the support of over 70% of the population. It's time for peaceful demonstrations and marches on Washington by the thousands to let Bush know that we the American people expect a redeployment plan, and fast, and that we the American people are veto proof. If that requires a few more graphics of the violence our soldiers are experiencing then so be it. If that requires showing the draped covered coffins coming home to families that are being torn apart then so be it. But it is time for the Dems regardless of their non veto-proof majority to ask the American people for help and to incite them to shake the hinges off the doors at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
You are a brilliant speaker...Churchillian. A gem amongst pebbles and rocks. You speak for all that apply logic and reason . You are morning coffee at night. Thank you for being a voice for reason.
Keith, what would these drones do without you telling them what to think. They heap so much praise on you for saying the most idiotic things. I truely think most of them are tuning in to PMSNBC to see the transgender specials or the nightly special comments on catching lib child predators at your kitchen table. Your station is a joke and the ratings prove it. But keep the drones fired up , it makes for good laughs
It's not just the Dems caving...the whole world is caving in to this Admin. Tony Blair, the most "seemingly subservient" not withstanding. Where is the rest of the world? Why are they not outraged? Cannot they start to sanction the U.S. gov't in some way!
It's not just the Dems caving...the whole world is caving in to this Admin. Tony Blair, the most "seemingly subservient" not withstanding. Where is the rest of the world? Why are they not outraged? Cannot they start to sanction the U.S. gov't in some way!
Gotta love the liberal fanboys in this blog...out in force, knowing their anti-Bush, Pro-olbermann for president crap will always be posted. And now, in an ironic twist of fate, you are attacking your own radical left wing base! Genius! By the way are any dissenting views EVER posted here? I thought you were so against censorship? Or is that just for educated opinions that differ from your political goals of spreading disinformation?
Chuck, USA: I add that last part to your ID with reservation. For USA signifies the right to express opinion and beliefs whether they agree with others or not. So if opposing views bother you so much please remove the USA from your ID. And you know, you have just given credibility to the folks in here you criticize by stating they are criticizing their own left wing. You see Chuck, folks in here are mature and big enough to criticize both parties and people on both sides of the isle, whether Bush and his cronies or the Dems who appear to be spineless. Nothing ironic about it. Just mature and credible. You on the other hand are one of the blind right wing immature idiots being led by a blind right wing administration, and you'll defend and follow that administration or party as it were like a mindless wildebeest into the rivers filled with crocodiles. And yes Chuck, those with opposing views are allowed to post here loud and clear. Type all the posts you want. Countdown will not censor you, or interrupt you like your right wing pundits Hannity and Limbaugh rudely interrupt others with opposing views. And those rivers filled with crocodiles Chuck. Keep coming. We're waiting for you.
Thank you, Mr. Olbermann. Giving voice to a people of a once proud nation. We have been betrayed by a democratic congress that does not have the intestinal fortitude to stand up to a despotic liar. I was afraid that such was the case when Ms. Pelosi came into office saying that impeachment was off the table before she was even able to investigate the crimes. She and Mr. Reid are giving a face to the limp-wristed image the Republicans have painted for Democrats for almost two decades. I know that if the Dems had done even one of the things that the Republican Executive branch has done that the Republicans would come after them with everything they have. The Dems have shown themselves to be spineless after being entrusted with the will of the American people. They have lost the chance to put the Republican party in the back seat for decades with this single failure of character. They have become a heelhound to the despots of war.
Keith, I agree 100% We all need to email our Representative, Senators & Criminal President, tell them all, GET US OUT OF IRAQ! Bring the troops home! Stop this illegal war! I am emailing the Special Comment to just about everyone I know. Please keep them coming! But please drop the American Idol, Paris Hilton and all that other celebrity crap! CountDown would be so much better without it!
Absolutely stunning bit of work last night. Keith has gone from channeling Edward R. Murrow to channeling the Mark Twain of Letters from the Earth. Seeing the accomplishments of my party lately, I'm reminded of something that Will Rogers said - "I don't belong to any organized political party. I'm a Democrat." Excuse me while I put a paper bag over my head.
Keith - absolutely brilliant and brave commentary and so eloquently and intelligently presented. I am a US citizen recently returned from about 10 years abroad - mostly in London - during which time we have gone from being the most admired, revered and envied nation in the world to the most despised by foe and ally alike. I had thought until a few days ago it was because of one man - W - but now see it is because of a 'bought and paid for' leadership on both sides who only seem in the end to vastly disagree on minor issues like gay rights and abortion (sorry but in a world gone mad they are 'high class' problems). The opinion of the American public who I have been assuring everyone I meet abroad are decent wonderful people, does not matter to these automatons past the election day. But the greatest kudo to you was that you said what you did on mainstream cable media which was brave and above all showed your true patriotism. Were it that more of our pollies had a fraction of your brass...! By the way - didnt you used to do baseball or something when I last lived here?
The next time someone in your news organization gets a chance to ask king george a question try this one... "Given the complete and utter incompetence of this administration coupled with it's total lawlessness, can you list one legitimate reason why you and your entire cabinet shouldn't be marched out of the White House in handcuffs?"
No... I can't think of one either!
Hi Keith, I loved your comment -- right on target with this administration. They are all Puss////...shall I say more... Sincere/ MH
my friend sent me this link, i could not find a way to email this directly to Mr Olberman. It looks like part and parcel of all the other things the Bush admin has done to remake our government over into a totalitarian regime. WE love how Mr Olberman stands up for we the people, unlike the congress that we the democrats voted in to end the war. Bush makes power grab Posted: May 23, 2007 1:00 a.m. Eastern President Bush, without so much as issuing a press statement, on May 9 signed a directive that granted near dictatorial powers to the office of the president in the event of a national emergency declared by the president. www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=55824
Love ya Keith! Keep doing what you do with such eloquence and intellect. That said, I noticed on your page "things we're working on for tonight" that the mention of the new frightening Presidential Directive was at the top of the list yet it was never mentioned on the show. Why? This move scares me more than any they've made and there have been plenty to choose from. This one seems to just tie it all together for them. How do you suppose THIS little gem slipped past congress? Is anybody there?
A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people
