Countdown Monday: Nexus of Politics & Terror

Keith Returns Tonight...

Fight or FlightThat Iraq has eclipsed the current presidency; that it will dominate the race for the next one -- we all already knew, and all too well.  How much -- we might not have guessed.  Last month was the deadliest month for Americans there in more than two-and-a-half months.  June has already seen the daily average escalate.  Our fifth story on the Countdown: The U-S military, announcing that 14-Americans have already been killed in the first three-days of June in Iraq... four of them in a single roadside bombing.  And the Democrats had to debate it.

The Plot ThinsThe JFK Terror plot... heavy on the hysteria... short on the "plot"... We'll ask an expert about the real impact of the possible attack.

ODDBALL:  A dubious call by a minor league umpire leads to an argument with the manager, then the manager freaks out and re-enacts a scene from "Platoon".  When it's this good, folks, you only need one story in Oddball.

Nexus of Politics and Terror:   Since last August, there had been a period of calm.   The screaming hair-on-fire pronouncements about terror plots that may have had real plotters but no real conceivable chance of actually happening... ceased.  That the period, spanned the time between the 2006 mid-term elections, and the week we reached exactly 18 months until the 2008 presidential election -- just a coincidence.  Our third story on the Countdown...from the mind-bending idea that four guys dressed as Pizza Delivery men were going to out-gun all the soldiers at Fort Dix...to the not-too-thought-out plan to blow-up J-F-K Airport... here we go again.   Time for an update of our segment "The Nexus of Politics and Terror".

Looking Ahead to Paris:  We're trying to fit 20 lbs of cranberry stuffing into a fifteen pound bird here, folks.  On a night when we have the Nexus of Politics and Terror, we need to shorten #2 to fit it all in (see #1).

WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD:  Television's biggest hit sensation (WPITW) is back, and Keith has a head of steam saved up for the Big Giant Head.

Paris in the Pokey:  Michael Musto helps console Keith as the first of Paris Hilton's twenty-something day prison stint begins.

Well there is finally somebody who's is willing to tell it like it is. Took long enough but at least Keith did. He is the only one who is willing to say it like it is. And he is doing it to both sides. Which makes him even more credible in my eyes. Every time there was a treat I shook my head because I knew nothing come of it. It is almost like a broken record. Here is the bad part about all of this: if you call wolf to many times nobody will pay attention when the real wolf is coming. Isn't it interesting that we took Saddam out because of the ethnic cleansing he did? What is the difference now? Isn't there still ethnic cleansing except even more than before? So what did our soldiers die for? It's interesting how as bad as Saddam was Iraq is a whole lot worse now under us.
yeah, a one minute line abt cong. jefferson.... um, and where is the followup to the dictator directive... just sayin
Mr. Olbermann, I absolutely loved the connection between alerts and "arrests" and bad news for the administration. However, your staff missed a bunch. These wannabe terrorists that couldn't blow up a balloon that they have been arresting lately are usually poor suckers that got set up by our gov't and then the loyal Bushies sit on the news until the timing is right, sounds like Rove's handiwork. Also, I found it incredibly "coincidental" that prior to the first debate there was that "hot" news release about the terrorist plotters I think in Saudi Arabia. Interesting that they sat on the story for nearly SIX MONTHS before releasing it, "conveniently" right before the first Democratic debate. When will we impeach these criminals? Where is the oversight? Congress should be subpoenaing all phone records and e-mails concerning each of these "terrorist" arrests and prove to the public the crass manipulation of this administration.
Sorry Don, but CA was wrong , Paris got more attention and Keith did not demand Jefferson's immediate resignation. A slight mention does not cover the bias from PMSNBC. Now, many on here are stating that they don't want to know of any terrorist plots , so why is Michael Reagan wrong in what he says. Either you want to know or you don't care. You can't have it both ways. If you don't care then it doesn't matter if the gov't tells you or not. I can tell you one thing , if terrorist plan an attack on NYC - keep it quiet cause we don't care. But id Phila. is in their sights, hell yeah I want to know.
KO, great show and history of Nexus of Politics and Terror. Just watching it makes me ill but it puts things into perspective and only you can do that. You look great with the tan and look rested. I get a little miffed when people criticize you for your tan or what not, who cares. Thanks for having Craig Crawford on last night, POL is such an excellent book that I hope you can actually have him in your studio to go over it more especially on his comments on rewards. I saw him on Joe and felt he did much better because he was flying solo and not dealing with a crumpy Pat Buchanan or an arrogant and rude Mr. Lizza. Peace, Denise

I like to laugh and roll my eyes at our professional laughingstocks (Britney, Paris, American idol contestants, etc) as much as the next person, but I also wish that we could pause on them occasionally to maybe report on someone actually doing some good in the world, especially after stories like the Nexus of Terror. After segments like those my trust and hope for humanity is usually hitting rock bottom, so a story on Paris Hilton is just salt in the wound. In fact, more often than not I skip the number 1 story. As a suggestion, I would love it if Countdown could balance and counteract that pessimism created from the previous 4 stories with more positive stories as the number 1, even if they take more work to find and research (although I think you could use trashy celebrity news intermittently while your reporters work on something nice). I think hearing about the true heroes in our world today would be pleasantly different from what you normally see in the news and it'd be a hell of a lot more interesting.
While I don't agree with the handling of Iraq, or where our recources are going to fight islamofacsism, clutching at coincidences and impying that the war on terror does not exist and my fears are being infuenced by the government is irresponsible journalism, even if you inform us that it might be only coincidence. If you don't have enough facts to fill up airtime don't say you are just asking the questions that should me asked snd go out and dig for some truth. Next thing you will be spouting 911 actually was government orchestrated. Your show is the mirror image of the O'rielly factor. I agree with some of your views but sometimes you are so far left as he goes so far right it makes have to roll my eyes and laugh and hope not to many people take you seriously. I know you hate the administration (I certainly didn't vote for him) A little less soap box and a little more investigating would be nice.
Steve, Ladera Ranch, CA (Sent Tuesday, June 05, 2007 4:17 AM) Do tell Steve, which laws of physics were violated on 9/11? Talk about tin foil hats, your’s is probably made of platinum.
The first time I heard Greg Palast's name was Democracy Now reporting his story about the Energy Task Force secret meeting in which he interviewed Pete Carroll, (spell) a former Shell CEO who said the invasion of Iraq was discussed and the subsequent privatization of its oil resources, to which Palast said, Big Oil disliked. Palast said Big Oil didn't want the stigma of stealing this oil, and also they profit from OPEC prices. The burr beneath the Conservatives saddle is the embargo of 72 and 73 which they classify as threatening our national security so they justify slaughtering hundreds of thousands of Iraqis to control an oil reserve they say is crucial to our survival except they won't say it. They just stand on a pile of dead bodies and wave the flag. I don't know about Palast's report about 9-11 but he was on target about Big Oil and why we are militarily occupying a sovereign state to force a new oil law giving Republican corporate sponsors their untold riches. Truthout reported last month millions of barrels of Iraq oil are missing but our corporate media hasn't touched the story. We have to cure this government like a syphilis. I suggest another party, a Populist or Progressive Party and we have a place to put our money where our mouth is. There's probably more than ten million members of progressive organizations created since 9-11. We have witnessed the power of truth and the internet. I would rather lose and fund a person who believes in my core values than someone who repeatedly lies to me, murders for money and oil and rolls over faster than my Lab. People want change. People want an alternative and Americans have not only a responsibility but a duty to replace or reform this government when it becomes corrupt according to the US Constitution. We need to take our energy away from the Democratic Party, poste haste. Adios Republican Light.
Michael- I am a devoted fan of Countdown but I,too, was a little worried about this. I do believe that there is too much "coincidence" between the recent alerts and political need. As one blogger put it, they are at the risk of crying wolf too often. However, the flip side of that is if we start promoting any conception that the risk is not real. A conundrum that smarter people than I will have to solve.

Keith - Once again you bring the Nexus of Politics and Terror to light in last night's broadcast. Here we are again with the smoke and mirrors administration. As thousands are dead and wounded in Iraq and the numbers are climbing as the surge proves to be just as bad idea as most said it would be, this administration keeps pushing their politics of fear. We have more and more of our men and women in uniform and innocent Iraqis dying by greater numbers as this war rages on and they attempt to convince us that we should be ever fearful of the McGyver-like terrorist who is trying to blow up aircraft with a combination of hair gel, lipstick and the little plastic thingies on the end of their shoe laces. Then we have a GOP rep in Arkansas that believes all we need is another 9/11 terrorist attack and everyone will love GW again. WTF??? If that were to God-forbid happen, how is that a good thing for this administration? The administration of "We are fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them here" and "Our diligence is the reason we have not been attacked again since 9/11"? Why should this administration fear another attack anyway? Will the Bush daughters be shopping in the mall or flying on commercial aircraft or riding the subway when there is a REAL attack? Will those in Congress be working in their offices when the truck bomb in the parking garage explodes? Once again the only victims of a REAL terrorist attack will be the everyday Americans and those in Washington will only use the attack for political purposes. Wars are always started by people that will never have to suffer the terrible consequences that it brings.
Michael you don't get it. Bush used this retic and tactics so many times that people with a brain just turn it of. They keep saying if you republican you for life, if you democrat you for dead. Here is my problem with this: Isn't under Bush who is a republican that the body count keeps going up? So correct me if I am wrong but how is that for life? How can anybody take them serious anymore? And I don't mean in the USA alone but around the world? We now become the ones seen as bullies. How can you say you bring democracy around the world? Even if we have to do it by force? Wouldn't that make us what we fighting against? Nobody sees the Irony here?
Woah John Phila: I never said that Keith would demand Jefferson's immediate resignation. I said that I believed Keith would mention Jefferson's indictment on his show. Don't put words in my mouth. And so what if Jefferson may get a little less attention on Keith's show then say that fine upstanding citizen Tom Delay. Why does it shock you that this occurs when it is obvious Keith leans to the left. He certainly does not hide it. Just like Hannity or Brit Hume (a news anchor), John Gibson, Bill O'Reilly, Limbaugh and others lean to the right and they don't hide it. What is the big deal. If you don't like what Keith reports and how he reports it then change the channel to Hannity, Hume, Gibson, O'Reilly, whoever and quit criticizing Olberman for being and reporting exactly where exactly he would agree he leans, to the left. That's like me criticzing Hannity or Hume for spending more time blasting those on the left than on the right. What's the point? They obviously lean to the right so what do I expect (except compared to Keith they are idiots), but they can't help that. Must be something from birth. At least Keith does not have noted as a caption under his show "Fair and Balanced". I would like to see keith add a caption to his show that says UnFair / Unbalanced At Times But Sane Most Of The Time.
Thanks so much for the Nexus report. We are not being manipulated only by fear. Has anybody noticed the National Enquirer quality of news reporting since Bush has been in office? Think of all the women that have gone missing since 2000: Chandra Levy, Elizabeth Smart, Lacy Peterson, The Runaway Bride, the girl in Aruba and now Kelsey. What about the funeral of Ronald Reagan, how long was that on the news??? The other news rag items that have been used to distract us: the Astronaut love triangle, Anna Nicole Smith, Brittney Spears, Lindsey Lohan, Imus, the TB scare. Geez Liz Taylor and Richard Burton never got this kind of air time!!! Where are the real reporters/journalists? Why is Barbie and Ken giving us our news these days???
Linda in Tampa - you are singing my song. Add to that how the 24 hour news channels can only seem to cover 1 story at a time. All runaway bride, all the time, for example. Then another story comes along that knocks that one off and, there they go again covering that story endlessly until it's replaced by yet another story that will get 24 hour coverage. THAT is the reason that the BushCo Fear Flag raising tactic works. It is the only thing that gets covered whether it's legit or not and it knocks anything else off the air. We need media that covers the NEWS! All the news. Not just one stinking story covered to death. MSM ratings are going DOWN as more people, sickened by what you rightly call the National Enquirer News as well as single story only coverage, turn to the internet to find out what's really going on. Why do I get more information about the the daily life and troubles of Paris Hilton than I get about Iraq, or the politicalization of the Injustice Department, etc. MSM needs to wake up or they will go the way of the dinosaurs.
CA, I agree. Keith just needs to say he is unfair and unbalanced and stop leadings these people into taking his every word as news. He picks out which stories he covers, does not have a guest with a counterpoint , and adds his commentary as if he has the only point of view. Not journalism, not even entertainment, only foolishness that deserves the low ratings he gets.
John, Phila; Come on John! Can't even admit your wrong on a simple statement, have to spin your own word's, of "won't see", into not enough coverage, did not ask for his resignation. I quote you "breaking news- congressman Jefferson indicted- won't see that on Kieth Olbermann's Show tonight" well we saw it that's all i'm saying, you were wrong! that as they say is that. As far as the terrorist plot's go, when the right of the people to know is used against the people in the form of fear, just for political purpose's are political advantage this is what happens. We all here know the possibility of another terrorist attack in america is very likely, more so than ever since our occupation of Iraq. Why is Michael Reagan wrong?, because he fear's "We The People" the Administration fear's "We The People" why? if what you are doing is in the best interest of "We The People" then why fear the People? When Michael Reagan said Bush should shut down the media, he was not talking about Bush's voice are the voice of the Administration in the media, he was talking about the voice of "We The People" in the media. You said it your self, you want to know about terrorist plot's, it would be and advantage, we all would have liked that advantage, but when the Bush Administration used terror for political advantage, they stoll that advantage from all of us. Thank's Don
Dear Mr. Oberman, I applaud the strength of you and your network for airing last nights broadcast about the Nexus of Politics and Terror. Keep the flame burning. Strengthen neutrality in the media and for heavens sake keep asking why Washington fails to find Osama bin Laden.
John , Phila - Keith, in his position, I believe cannot or should not "DEMAND" a resignation; however, we can and I have!! I demanded his resignation MANY times and PRIOR to the November 2006 elections. In addition, Michael Reagan is a domestic fanatic who just last week stated, "if I were George W. Bush, I would shut the press down so the Americans would now see what was going on in Iraq every night on their televisions and the lack of support for the war would decline." Question John, do you support the First Amendment to our Constitution? If you do, then I don't feel you or anyone who supports and loves our Constitution should in any way, shape or form channel Michael Reagan, as he feels it’s just “FINE” to do away with the First Amendment and shatter our Constitution!!
John-Phila: If you are going to suggest that Keith admits to be unfair and unbalanced at times then perhaps you might suggest that those on Fox also take off the Fair and Balanced caption and put UnFair and UnBalanced at times as well. Fair is fair John. If you can't do that and if Fox won't do that then why should Keith.
Countdown, is it possible that you can update this blog more frequently. Dialogue is so important and it seems lately that posts do not show up for hours. It is troubling at times as I feel it defeats the purpose of the GREAT blog.
Ben Bernanke's statements that the US economy is right on track should cause a stir of concern which it has done with the stock market. Auto sales are down, increased importing is up, and the economy as a whole should be suspect. Afterall, when the big boys who control the mergers and acquisitions have completed this round, what is to keep this supposed great economy from falling? It certainly is not the public at large as in most other studies because this economy isn't being maintained by the spending public but rather by Wall Street machinations only. GM, Ford, and Chrysler are shot. Big spending on other diposables is down and until Wall Street is completed, the US economy will not be tossed out. I am of the intention that Bush is trying to spend the next administration into a recession. If it is democratic, then complete pandimonium will occur. I am not sure how Bush can differentiate between the same, but he is betting on taking all the marbles when he ends his term. The game is up with this reactionary Ologarch and not a moment too soon!
C A, Tuscaloosa, AL; Thank's it's good to be making a few post again. I'll send and email today before i head to work a few hour's from now, look for it Thank's again my friend!
Scott...world renown expert on Global Warming...read the work by Steven E. Jones, physics professor at BYU...read his take on the Twin Towers collapse...I realize your science won't agree with his, but read his report...interesting stuff...you will reject his findings because of your large brain, but read his work with an open mind...if you can...keep up the good work on global warming...maybe the majority of the real scientists around the world one day will finally agree with you and Glenn Beck...here is an example of Dr. Jones work...enjoy..."Building 7 was not hit by a plane and yet it collapsed in 6.6 seconds, which is .6 seconds quicker than it would take an object dropped from the roof of the building to hit the floor. This violates fundamental laws of physics, unless the building was brought down by explosives."
From Okla City to WTC bombing 1, to WTC blasting 2, to Anthrax, to terrorists named Mouhamid anything in a car trunk,to suicide bombings, to Katrina response, to shoe bombs, to school shootings, to TB, bird flu, etc., deadly disease in your and your pets food. After about five minutes of listening to it I say one thing, "It's a test folks, only a test." Some people are willing to exploit the mayhem to further their cause. The question is, what's the cause? And by the way, this is a well doc'd theory, goes back thousands of years. The problem comes when you know you're being fooled, but haven't figured out why. Nexus.
I just want to say that, no matter who sube for him, no one can deliver like Keith. His piece, "Nexus of Politics and Terror," was terrific. I do have one concern. Countdown has many intelligent, informative commentators and reporters on the show. I cannot understand where Craig Crawford fits in. He panders and smirks whenever he's on. Countdown and Keith can do better.
What's up with this blog today? No updates for hours??
The Nexus was probably the most sobering thing I've seen on your show. It got me to thinking that we need to bring back Civics classes to the public grade and middle schools. Our kids need to know what kind of democracy they live in so they can build the one they want to keep. Thank you, Keith, for eveything.
Mr. Olbermann, your first rendition of the Nexus, back in the late summer of 2005, had 13 coincidences but contracted the presentation of the list to ten so as to discuss the matter with Asa Hutchison (sp?). This time, you say there are thirteen. Are these the same, or are there as many as sixteen?
RE: John's complaints about Keith and countdown: One reason I like Countdown is that Keith doesn't have 2, 3, 4 guests all competing for time to spout talking points. There are plenty of shows like that all over cable. If you like that, watch them. I don't, myself, have time to waste listening to political operatives spinning either the Dem or Republican line. Keith devotes significant time to 3 or 4 big stories and follows those threads through, week to week, and across longer stretches of time. This is a critical gap in news coverage, which in most cases gives almost no space and or time for perspective or connecting stories. Keith has a clear perspective and you know what it is, but often guests disagree with him or offer more complex perspectives. I read many, many articles from across the political spectrum and feel that, most times, Keith and his staff do an excellent job of both focusing on stories and developing them in some depth. If that is not what you want to see, use the remote. That's what it's there for. I know because I cruise past FOX shows every day.
Linda, Pittsburgh - As always, great analogy and also, thanks for the GREAT (and very funny) last line!!
The Nexus between politics and terror tentacles to all facets of our lives. The War in Iraq is NOT A BLUNDER, but PURPOSEFUL QUAGMIRE. We blogfolk struggling to pay escalating energy and health costs (the intentionally orchestrated homeland quagmire] have understood this for years. Read "What if Our Mercenaries Turn on Us" http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2007/06/03/1638 by Chris Hedges, regarding Blackwater, a corporation that exemplifies "privatization of war" and "hands an incentive to American corporations, many with tremendous political clout, to keep us mired down in Iraq." In addition, Blackwater recently "announced it was creating a private intelligence branch called “Total Intelligence.” Ten to one they are connected with the recent "surge" in terror "plots." It is not unreasonable to suggest “Total Intelligence” would be interested in any means to ensure their company’s growth and power. The oil and pharmaceutical companies are literally writing our legislation. Why not Blackwater too? Someone powerful in the media needs to expose which and how many congressional and Department of Injustice personnel, elected & appointed officials have direct campaign finance or other ties to Blackwater. The information is readily available online and has been for some time, though I can’t say the “internets” will be an open forum much longer.
The Nexus between politics and terror will cause terrorism. As long as there are politicians who compromise the interests of the country only to gain/fulfill their personal interests, there is no hope of being a truely democratic country.

When the Laws are strict, punishment is swift and harsh, the administration who imparts/relays the govt to the people are faithful, you can set right all the loopholes of the systems.

When there is fear of strict punishment for wrong doing...no one dares to do it... Also, educating the people about their rights and priveleages, we CAN transform world.

People should change their attitude towards blinding following the 'so-called' leaders, who dont know how to 'lead by example'.
Keith thank you for your insightful and pertinent commentaries. George bush needs to put his enormous ego aside and do what is right for the country and it's citizens. He is a narcissistic meglomaniac who doesn't care about any one or anybody. The country needs to take the government back and bring him and his administration to justice. Thank you Keith.

Thank you for voicing your opinion about the "accomplishments" of our "esteemed" leader, George W. Bush.  Most people in the news media seem to be AFRAID to tell the truth about this "man" or to even question his policies.  When we seek and know the truth it will make us free. It is refreshing to hear you voice opinions that are both brave and sensible.  I pray that God will bless you and keep you in His care always.
