Countdown Wednesday: Bush Whacked

Posted: Wednesday, June 06, 2007 8:08 PM by Countdown
Filed Under:

GOP Divide:   It is believed to be a first for a sitting President. At his own party's Presidential debate, he emerges as the... clear loser.  And he isn't even one of the candidates.  Our fifth story on the Countdown: the good news for President Bush: only one of the former members of his cabinet threw him under the bus in New Hampsher last night.  The bad news for Tommy Thompson and the other would-be Republican nominees to succeed Mr. Bush: they won't be running against him.  All in all, it is enough to make a man skip town.  The President, having already done that... still in Germany for the G-8 summit.

Save Scooter!:   The cries for a pardon of Scooter Libby.  Despite the fact that the prosecutor and the judge were both appointed by President Bush...The Right is up in arms that Libby is going to jail.. and even turning on the president for not granting a pardon already.  John Dean on the Conservative reaction to the Libby Sentence.

ODDBALL:  Fun with excersize balls and the coldest case in the long history of cold cases.  Yeah, we have a very special caveman autopsy tonight.

The Plot Continues to ThinOur third story on the Countdown: Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York astonishing some of his critics and comforting some of his friends, by not only not joining the stampede after the revelation of the technically impossible "JFK Pipeline Plot"... but actually encouraging New Yorkers to remember how unlikely terrorism truly is.

The Face of Death:  For ten years, the images were taboo - even to Britain's infamous tabloids.  But in our number two story on the Countdown, for the first time ever tonight, the grainy paparazzi shots showing Princess Diana's last moments alive, have tonight been broadcast on British television. Producers at the network in question, Channel Four, claimed the photos were an essential part of it's documentary entitled "Diana: The witness in the tunnel"

WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD:  Melanie Morgan's flunkie, the National Guard and FOX News' own Roger Ailes jockey for top honors tonight.

Divas Behind Bars:  One's in the klink, the other can't drink...shocking celebrity headlines with In Touch Weekly's Tom O'Neil

To Mitt Romney: You used the words "null set" and "non-sequitur" when responding to the question about invading Iraq. To quote one of my favorite movie heroes, "I do not think that word means what you think it means." Way to evade a question, Hair Piece. - To Sam Brownback: Cancer? Yeah. People fear cancer. Just like they fear getting struck by lightning or catching any of the other thousands upon thousands of diseases and illness that can kill you just as dead as cancer. Fear? No, the fear of death is just part of the human condition. That is not the kind of fear that is the problem today and you should know it, but hey, you're mentally not quite right. You're a politician. And you've backed the Chimp Who Would Be King so I am pretty sure that although you may have read the Constitution, I doubt you understood the words. I also kept track of your disgraceful attempt for force creationism on Kansas schools. You do realize people all over the world LAUGHED at you and the State of Kansas over that, right? Until Herr Gingrich decides if he feels froggy, you are my nightmare Republican Presidential candidate. That about sums it up. - To Keith O: It must have been hard to exercise restraint in making jokes about Mr. Woods' plight with the priapism. Bravo, sir. Deftly executed.
Countdown: I know you guys have a thing about robots. Submitted for your approval - http://www.newlaunches.com/archives/hubo_fx1_chair_bot.php
KEITH, How could you have ignored the most important thing about Romney's Iraq answer. He said that Saddam wouldn't let the inspectors in. The inspectors were in and finding nothing when he made them leave to start a war about nothing. How could you??? See Paul Begala on the Huff Post.
Still looking for Greg Palast and the real reason for the Attorney firings. Something about the dictator directive as well
Whoa ... cavity searches, priapisms, pokeys, rubber glove jobs ... Countdown must have had a very, very good vacation ... Somewhere Potter Stewart is smiling tonight ... And so are we ... Gotta go now, my loofah awaits.
Countdown: I love your show, but ENOUGH with the celeb-gossip, already!!! Paris and Lohan are your number-one "news" story of the day? I do not tune in to watch ET. I'd liked to have heard more about the mother being court-martialed, or about Bloomberg's apparent rationalization. Please, keep celeb-gossip in the tiny "Tabs" segment.
Good evening, everyone! Just a few thoughts about this evening's number 4 and 3 stories, respectively. First, I continue to be so impressed and learn so much from John Dean. Not to make anyone feel old, but I was 3 when the Watergate **** was hitting the fan, so I wasn't exactly an eye-witness, so to speak. I love history, though; my undergraduate degree is in history. And, John Dean always provides such valuable and interesting insights having been such an important witness to the last time our executive branch seemed to be in "screw the Constitution" mode. CONSERVATIVES WITHOUT CONSCIENCE is one of the 4 books I'm reading these days. Not exactly light reading, but so interesting. And, regarding Mayor Bloomberg's sensical ravings of a non-lunatic mind (a play on dialogue from YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN - yep, I love Mel Brooks) concerning the JFK threat and the threat of terrorism in general, the cynic in me can't help but think he's positioning himself for, if not a presidential run, maybe some position in the next White House. Otherwise, why would he set himself up for the abuse he's taking and the abuse he will probably continue to take from "the right"? Because it's the right thing to do?! Naaahhhh.....
#1. Is there a Mothers Against Dumb Divas, yet? #2. Can't point too many fingers at the Brit Paparazzi. How many times has America watched the Zapruder Film? #3. Bloomberg knows New Yorkers have more to fear from Drunken Diva-wannabes, than from Terra-ists. Especially Homeless ones. #4. Cheney made it clear to Dubya. He's the only one who gets a pardon, if he needs one. #5. When I saw all those Republicans dressed up like a bunch of Funeral Directors, I knew they would bury Dubya. All that was missing was a Horseshoe Wreath with a "So Long, Cowpoke" ribbon.
I was thinking how much Mayor Bloomberg reminded me William Shatner in the famous SNL skit of telling all the Star Trek fans to get a life. It is pretty close to the same as Bloomberg because the far right is acting like he has committed some kind of crime by denouncing the attempted attack by the guys from the Acme Terrorist Company. I wonder if Bill Orally and Faux News will label Bloomberg as a Islamo Backer Of Terrorism. Rene'
Keith, my wife and I have been fans for years, back in the old days when your number one story was a real news story. But, tonight you crossed the line and should make your own Worst Person in the World List. No matter what anyone may think about Paris Hilton, your comments about "Body cavity searches" were rude, and obnoxious. It really isn't funny to degrade a person in that manner when they are already down and out. Believe me, we are no fans of the likes of Brittany or Paris but no one deserves to be treated that way. That is something Bill-o has and still does. We are still fans, but the comments were more a reflection on you than they were humorous about Paris.
Please Keith and Countdown...no more Paris Hilton stories...the mensa blonde is a trainwreck I don't want to see or hear about every again...isn't the law suppose to apply to everyone...if I violated my probation twice, my ass would be in jail...no questions asked...why shouldn't our laws apply to everyone?...I remember, money buys justice...and no more trainwreck Lohan too...maybe if people stopped giving these trainwrecks free publicity they would just disappear...I stop watching Countdown after Worse Person now...the trainwrecks get more coverage than the soldiers who are dying day after day in Iraq and Afghanistan...we rarely, if ever, hear their names, just the updated body counts...what is wrong with that picture??? Plus, whatever happened to the Presidential Directive? Countdown wastes time on the Mensa Blonde but not on the dictator directive...I will continue to stop watching the show whenever you cover Paris, Lindsay, Britney, Jessica, Pamela, etc...why am I suppose to care about all this arrested development?...enough of all the Mensa Blondes of the Apocalypse...Anna, may she rest in peace...how about that Presidential Directive, Keith!...let Jonathan Turley talk about the directive and you can just sit back and listen...NO MORE PARIS...NO MORE MENSA BLONDES...why not end the show with a tribute to the soldiers who died the day before...something meaningful...not more coverage of the insipid, vapid, vacuous, inane...truly sad that more people recognize the Mensa Blondes than Nietzsche, Marquez, Sontag, Beckett, Barthes, or Borges...
On the Paris Hilton cavity search thing, I think it should have been conducted by Heraldo Rivera; live, on the air. It certainly would have been more interesting than his opening of 'Al Capone's Vault', wouldn't it?
I must say, telecasting pictures of Princess Diana's last moments is as about as tasteful as someone filming my Dad dying from the massive heart attack that indeed did kill him. I don't see what purpose it would have served ten years ago, let alone now. Her children did not ask to be put in the public eye, and they should NOT have to endure the grotesque filming of her final moments. What the HELL is wrong with these people? More to the point, what is wrong with the people that want to see it?
As Bush's numbers began to tumble into the toilet, was there ANY question that these guys would turn tail and run from him? Wouldn't this be considered "cutting and running"?
Thank you George in Hammonton. I don't watch the last few minutes of Countdown unless it's a 'Special Comment,' and I don't think anyone else should. If I wanted to know about these, um, people, I'd read Teen beat or the National Enquirer! Instead of wasting Countdowns time on the likes of skanky people, how about devoting THAT time frame to honor those that have given their all while serving our country? Hmmm, maybe it doesn't make for good t.v.! Too bad! PEACE!!!!!
Todd, New Orleans: Youl'll never know how hard I laughed at yout "hair piece" comment - there's a local character with that nickname - and as for the 'cancer scare' part of your post - I can't say I agree with your assessment, but I do agree with scare tactic politics PERIOD. The possibility of cancer scares the hell out of anyone who's diagnosed with displasyia, abnormal moles, fibromas or polyps. I had dysplasia a decade ago, and just this January had three "marble-sized" tumors removed from one breast, with a warning about the tissue in the other. The threat of cancer is a personal terror - not a collective one. Other than that bit, Todd, a good post.
Todd - Referring to Mitt Romney as "Hair Piece" is classic and will keep me laughing all night; and hopefully, well into my daughters' leaving Monday and returning in two long weeks. Thanks Todd and please keep it up, as C A made me realize I should continue posting and just ignore the jerks who either make no sense or sling insults because I challenge their long-standing beliefs, which George W. Bush has either shattered or forced them into "deep reflection". I've laughed Romney's hair from day one, as it really make him appear as "phony" as he is; but to read it in the context you wrote it in is more than hysterical!! Thanks again....
Steve Turner Cedar Falls Iowa - Number 5 is not only my favorite, it's great!!
George, Hammonton, NJ - I've complained about the same thing. And more than once. Or twice...
Jamie - Indeed it is disgraceful to air the footage of Princess Diana's final moments. "What the HELL is wrong with these people"? GREED!! The almighty dollar has sucked every iota of decency out of their souls!! I wonder how they would feel if it was a family member as you stated regarding your father. I know how I would feel, as I lost my father suddenly, like you, 12 years ago. These people care about nothing but money!!
Keith - Thank you for making that IDIOT Roger Ailes the "Worst Person in the World"!! Ailes’ bigoted comment about Senator Obama, again, based on his Arabic name, “Barack Hussein Obama” at a republican fund raiser was indeed despicable!! Hey fat ass Ailes, you are a bigot and because of your racism, your station lost all rights to air ANY democratic debate. I am glad both the DNC and all the democratic candidates stood in solidarity in opposition to fatso’s bigotry!! Keith, you also nailed it with your astute analogy that FNC is as dangerous to our civil liberties and the foundation our country was built on as al-Qaeda itself!! They terrorize me every time I tune it to see what form of insanity they are preaching "this time"!!
PA-LEEZE! Enough Paris. I don't care if she ever eats or sleeps. She's in Jail, not a 5 star hotel. They deliberately make it bad in there so nobody wants another room reservation. The food sucks and the beds are hard. She's lucky to have her own room - frankly I'd prefer to see her in a room with someone who snores. She's a spoiled rich kid who thinks that following the law is only for the little people. Let her eat balogna. End the madness, Countdown, cover something else. There's real news out there - dictator story, voter caging.... No More Paris, unless it's the one in France or Las Vegas.
Another thought: Why is everyone shocked to see Republican presidential candidates running away from Bush? With approval ratings scraping the bottom of the pond sludge, they're not going to be fighting over getting a cool photo op with BushCo. What we need to see is a snapshot of their complete and total support of Bush in the past to the opinions they now offer. Perhaps too much to ask our media....to actually give us real reporting and background information and show people who these guys really are (political opportunists who will do or say anything for money or popularity).
Keith, I'm a fun of yours from Australia. I think that your show is like a warm ray of sunlight in the moral darkness that prevails the Bush administration. I have emailed your Countdown show URL to many relatives, friends and associates in other part of the world besides Australia. I have only one question for you and I would be extremely happy if you answer it. The question is: In your comments regarding the republican presidential hopefuls you seem to ignore completely republican candidate for the presidency Congressman Ron Paul. I'm certain that you know better than I the man that Bill Maher calls my hero, and also you must be aware of the reading assignment he gave to the Rep. presidential candidate Rudi Giuliani . Ron Paul represents 100% the original founding principles of the Republican Party and he is getting amazing support even from Democrats! I have read that many liberal people will be voting for a Republican for the first time in their life and that they're registering Republican just to vote for him in the primary. Although he won the previous republican debate very clearly, his popularity grows daily, the media has already buried him right along side Gravel and Kucinich. Is there a reason you don’t mention or interview in your Countdown show Ron Paul? Thank you so much for everything
My entire fire station shift reads Olbermann Watch every morning for the breakdown of the segment. Great thanks Keith !
Larry, Charleston SC - I disagree with you about a lot of things but MSNBC.com has a Visa sponsored tourism video on their site for Charleston and I just wanted to tell you that's a real pretty town ya got there Larry. I may have to visit sometime.
File Under T for Trivia : The loofah is a relative of okra. Maybe it's because I live in NO, but I'll never be able to eat gumbo again without thinking about throwing a bowl of it at Billo.
Beware of Andrew Keen.. -- http://edition.cnn.com/2007/TECH/internet/06/06/keen.amateurs.reut/index.html -- this is the kind of "control" that will be justified in attempts to censor the internet. Filtering technology aside, the current fundamental structure of the net is contra to centralized control. It was designed as a military network that could work in absence of a significant number of nodes, i.e. to be a decentralized network. So watch this guy and anyone else who would silence you. Elitism is evil and this is about control, not expression. And if you question the application of Hannah Ardent's Banality of Evil as applied to the blogosphere in this article, you should. It's misapplied.
On the Debates: I would think all of the networks would do some research and follow some of the rules of debating. What I have seen does not resemble the debates we participated in during high school. Questions and TIMELY topics should be prepared in advance and the candidates given time to present their point of view. I feel like we have taken a giant step backward, into the 60's and 70's, talking about abortion rights again (I thought this was resolved) with the worse topic being evolution. Are you kidding me? This is definitely not the topic my family is talking about around the dinner table. I also don't care what the candidate's religion is, unless they are basing all of their decisions on WWJD. Although I and my daughter are registered Dems, we have watched both party "debates". When Sen. Brownback said that the biggest fear of Americans is "cancer", my daughter and I looked at each other and just burst out laughing. I'm sorry, but although cancer does run rampant in my family, my Mom is being treated right now, OUR biggest fear is our President and the people who follow him. He has destroyed the reputation of this country, caused me to feel scared every single day with his actions and continues to put our troops in harm's way. Sorry, off on tangent. Bottom line, there is nothing new we are learning about these candidates with the present format. We need 1 moderator, not people popping up all over with a mike, and questions about getting out of Iraq, Health Care for people who can't afford insurance, Education etc. Keep up the good work, Keith. Love your show. Happy to see you have been able to keep Michael Musto off for awhile. I hate to see you squirm while talking to him, he is just plain creepy.
To LA, Seattle. The rebuplicans don't or won't notice the "cut and run" behavior in themselves any more than they will notice the "waffling" or "flip flopping" behavior. These are things they will only point out about others. I actually heard Tom DeLay, last night on Hardball, say that the Republican party doesn't care about the issues of evolution, abortion and gay marriage. I almost spit out my dinner I was so shocked. I think those very issues are the ones "they" trot out every election year to scare the religious right into voting for them. Without those very issues they can't get the vote from the religious right. These current GOP candidates will say anything to get elected.
LA,Seattle: None of these guys were ever friends or supportive of Bush. In fact, many most likely despise him. If at one time they ever appeared to get close to Bush it was purely for political gain. Naturally, when the numbers fall they will abandon ship. The Dems would do the same under the same circumstances. We have to remember that these career politicans are really slime when it comes to real sincere interpersonal relationships. Any relationships they have are purely politically driven. If they believed in the sanctity and importance of developiong and maintaining strong interpersonal relationships with any persons other than perhaps their immeidate family members, they would not have remained as a career politician in the current political process that demands untruths and dirty dealings.
Love to read the News Hole, but may I humbly recommend a spell checker? Really.
Hey Keith (Molly O)- Loved your story on Paris Hilton. Compared to the other stories tonight I think you are right on it with this one. It is so difficult to get the stories right with real news and I sympathyze with you. Making the libs happy is tough these days and reinventing or making up history is so much easier than covering the news. We love you Keith and keep up the good work, Paris is depending on you honey.
Dear Keith, I love your show and watch it for straight talk that I can't get anywhere else but that segment on Paris Hilton and the body cavity search was the limit. With so many important issues, who cares about Paris Hilton or any of the other useless celebrities like her? That segment was crude, lascivious and beneath you. Frankly, I could do without Tabs and Oddball also. Let's get back to important stories.
TMZ is reporting that Paris Hilton has been freed from jail, what is next, let Charles Manson go due to good behavior. Now this all makes sense, Scooter will receive a pardon and the world be a happier, safer place to live in. B******. This all comes as a shock if this is true, now Lindsay is at Promises planning her birthday party. Hey, can I get on that list? As you can see, I am being pretty flip because I am in shock. We have so many more important issues like to ask the candidates running for President do they believe in Evolution or not or can you still rock out like Mike Huckabee, and deliver the death penalty but be pro-life, aS JOhn Stossel says from ABC, "give me a break." Peace, Denise
hi Krista - i'm a historian also [BA, MA, and half a ph.d - that makes it a ph....] anyhow, I Was there during watergate [i'm a geeeezer - who also loves mel brooks] and we stopped my jr high social studies class so the kids could watch the hearings. i think the history channel has some of the tapes of those hearings, and if you've never seen them....you should. what did the president know, and when did he know it?? still chills the soul. john dean is awesome. i only finished Conservatives a couple weeks ago. he is awesome, and he understands the big picture. since the bushies and their pals dont ever see the big picture, well, i can only suspect that they learned nothing in their history classes, whenever they took them. Rumsfelt, Cheney --- they were all in nixon's admin. they are trying to make up for that corrupt bastard, even now. no, we wont pay! and KO --- hey, i agree with some of the other kids on this blog. enuf with the dumba$$ starlets. more politics, and oh, the dictator directive....but perhaps mayor mike has hit the nail on the head... maybe its a lotta BS, and we should move on, as they say. but, a little closure, that would solve the problem.
Ok, now confirmed Princess and Heir Paris Hilton homebound for 40 days, whoopie.WHo would have thought. Now can we move on to more important things KO. No more evolution talks or party planning from Lindsay Lohan. I would think keeping our kids safe and away from predatorswould be more interesting and useful. How to have beeter security at strip malls so people arent abducted and murdered. Enough of this other gooey junk. Peace, Denise
Always remember, the only thing we have to fear is an ignorant media. What a great week of programming on Countdown. The most important lesson we learned was that there are in fact lawyers and judges in this country who take the Constitution quite seriously. When you have guests on such as Jonathan Turley, John Dean, Lawrence O'Donnell; when you report stories such as the one on Guantanamo Bay with a lawyer unlike any lawyer I have ever heard, and when we have Scooter Libby going to jail, it gives me real hope and a sense that we're about to turn a corner and heading in the right direction again. Perhaps it's time for us all to re-visit our Founding Fathers this Fourth of July. They gave us much, yet for reasons I’ll never quite comprehend, the Constitution has been ignored for six years by this Administration. But as they're finding out, there’s a law against that. Why this country elected someone like Bush is truly beyond me. Oh no, I remember - he’s someone they would have liked to have a beer with. I guess that’s important. And now Fred Thompson is a favorite - and he’s someone who when asked this week what his accomplishments were in the Senate, he couldn’t think of anything. Good grief, I hope he doesn’t like beer.
Good Thursday morning, all. Barb in Albany, thanks for your kind words! I've seen some of the Watergate hearings on the History Channel. Good stuff! I can visualize the oxygen being sucked out of the White House when it became public knowledge that there was a taping system in the Oval Office. OOPS!! My MA is in English (hence the Beat Literature class and my part-time teaching gig). No PhD in my future; I'm done with school forever but could retire today if I had a nickel for every time I've been asked when I'm going for that Ph.D.;) ANYWAY, sorry for the delay in why I'm posting now. Just to come to the defense of Keith, the producers, COUNTDOWN, etc., news of Paris Hilton's release from jail is on National Public Radio's website. I say again, the Paris news is on NPR'S WEBSITE! N P R!! In today's climate, like it or not, she's considered news. Just gotta deal with it, go with the flow, and know, like a kidney stone (and my husband's had kidney stones, so I know what I'm talking about!), Paris, too, shall pass.
Todd: I have been to Charleston. The boat ride to Ft. Sumnter tour of Ft. Sumnter is great and the historical old town is just wonderful. I understand they put a noose around ole Black Beards neck there at Battery Park. Is that correct Larry? And there is a resturarant there that is rated pretty high on the international restaurant rating list (can't remember the name of the rating organization). The restuarant is called Pertida's or something like that. Happened upon it as a teenager when visiting Charleston on a whim. It is locted where you would not think you would find a restuarant. I beleive it used to be an old prison or something like that. Anyway, the atmosphere, food and service was just great. Very interesting place. Lot's of history.
Sorry Pam , but you're not being realistic again. There is not 1 politician that would pass up free airtime, especially a chance to pick up a few votes you wouldn't normally count on. If Bush is so despised then Fox viewers would be a select group of voters to try to persuade. However, the real reason I expect is that are afraid of the questions they will be asked. If none of these candidates can stand up to Fox News, how can we expect them to stand up to a real world threat. I just don't buy the bias argument as MSNBC is just as biased if not more so. The dems are simply a group looking for the softballs from Chris Matthews , don't want to answer a real question. If I were Fox I'd go on with the debate with whoever shows up and give them all the time they need to rip the noshow cowards. Now, I wonder if Mitt and John Edwards use the same hairdresser. I think Mitt can afford the $400 charge ! And speaking of that , maybe Hillary should try a new doo, it couldn't hurt.
Don't know if the producers of Countdown care, but I, too, am turning the program off when it turns to celebrity stuff towards the end of the show. It's pretty awful to watch and quite frankly, not funny.
So, the bleached blonde bimbo heiress has been released from jail? Hmmm, maybe Pace, Rumsfeld, etc., wrote her glowing letters of recommendation. Hey, maybe ole' DICK himself stepped up to the plate this time. Gee, now I can spend the rest of the day just knowing that the poor girl is no longer suffering. PEACE!
Great Thanks Keith for degrading Paris Hilton, check around your fan blogs, you actually got people feeling sorry for her. Keep up that high quality news segment---don't worry, your immature behavior during the "Paris" stories won't dilute all rest of the news, not to mention your credibility too much. (Oh, yeah, your producer makes you do it) Putz.
Pam. They should have worn Togas and delivered a Marc Anthony Eulogy in Latin. Now that would've hit the nail on the head. In Nomini Rex Republica Nihil.
At this very moment, Scooter is on the line to Paris (Hilton), asking how she managed to pull it off.
Glad to see (Krista and barb g) that Conservatives without Conscience is still on peoples' reading list. I got it last summer when I saw Dean on Countdown. The book makes a critical distinction between "conservatatives" and "authoritarian conservatives"--a distinction that explains, perhaps, some of the polarization in today's politics. We talk a lot about checks and balances, and we usually mean the way that the framers of the Constitution separated power among the three branches of government. We also recognize the role of the press as a "check" on corruption and power (although the mainstream media has been more an enabler of unbridled power than a check on it in the past 20 years). But the balance between "conservative" and "liberal" has been put of of whack by authoritarian conservatives, who jettisoned traditional conservative values like fiscal restrain in favor of the pursuit of power. Here's Dean on authoritarianism: "What has driven this book is the realization that our government has become largely authoritarian. It is run by an array of authoritarian personalities, leaders who display all those traits I have listed---dominating, opposed to equality, desirous of personal power, amoral, intimidating, and bullying; some are hedonistic, most are vengeful, pitiless, exploitive, manipulative, dishonest, cheaters, prejudiced, mean-spirited, militant, nationalistic, and two faced." (We might imagine a few so-call "liberals" who share those characteristics. as well.) The problem is that authoritarianism is inherently anti-democratic; it chips away--or hammers away--at freedoms and accountability in order to consolidate power in the hands of authoritarian leaders. And I think it has eroded that balance between liberal and conservating in this country by hijacking regular "conservatism" and vilifying liberalism and by using bully tactics (see Cheny, Rove, Scooter Libby and Joe Wilson) to silence dissent. We all--liberals, moderates, conservatives, Democrats, Republicans and Independents--would be better off if we learned to recognize, reject, and fight the authoritarian forces that undermine our democracy. (I am not speaking here for Dean, who is leagues smarter than I am on this subject and no doubt others.) But this books makes a powerful argument, especially for conservatives who are puzzled by the current state of affairs.
Isn't it more relaxing to have a major city mayor attempt to assuage concerns about terror than to trumpet them? Instant presidential material should he want to step into the fray. And just maybe that explains his upfront mannerisms! Bloomberg for president!
Larry – The issue is not whether or not Fox News Channel (FNC) is biased, as a monkey would come to that conclusion. I have actually emailed Roger Ailes several times and told him that FNC has the right to air what they choose, select the hosts they choose, report what a “heck of a job” George W. Bush is doing; however, they have NO right to state they are “fair and balanced”. This is not only misleading, it’s a flat out lie. I told Ailes it would serve his station and take away the warranted criticism leveled at FNC for this blatant lie. Advertise as what they are, a station with consumed with right-wing views, right-wing commentators and hosts, supports republicans no matter what and George W. Bush and his Administration ruthlessly. FNC could then say bye-bye critics who justifiably accuse FNC as hypocrital, liars and guilty of false advertising. He emailed back and said “Thank you for the suggestion”. Moving on, the democrats are not “running” from FNC. The very fact that FNC portrays itself as a legitimate news organization, for reasons stated above, is a joke. One FNC commentator resorted to making fun of Senator Obama’s “ears” during the last State of the Union Address. Solidifying FNC’s fate was Ailes’ racist statement launched at Senator Obama. While Ailes thought tying Senator Obama to Pakistani terrorists at a Republican fundraiser was “humor” and based solely on his name. Ailes’ was clearing attempting to instill “fear” based on the Arabic origin of the Senator’s name. Ailes’ clearly represents what his organization stands for; one-sided, right-wing reporting on everything. A president of a “news organization” and I use that term sickeningly, who unleashes a bigoted comment against ANY presidential candidate, republican or democrat, or anyone else for that matter, is irresponsible journalism and you know it Larry. There is absolutely ZERO room or tolerance for such blatant bigotry and discrimination. In addition, judging from the questions FNC posed to the republican candidates, “God, God and God”, which have nothing to do with the qualifications of a man or woman running for president, it is only unproductive time and time that should be spent by the democrats debating critical issues, i.e. bringing our troops home, repairing our much damaged global reputation, restoring credibility amongst the community of nations and restoring the Constitution and civil liberties to the United States of America, etc. etc. etc.!!

Advertise as what they are, a station consumed with right-wing views, right-wing commentators and hosts, supports republicans no matter what and George W. While Ailes thought tying Senator Obama to Pakistani terrorists at a Republican fundraiser was “humor”, it was based solely on his name. Ailes’ was clearly attempting to instill “fear” based on the Arabic origin of the Senator’s name. In addition, judging from the questions FNC posed to the republican candidates, “God, God and God”, which have nothing to do with the qualifications of a man or woman running for president, it is only unproductive time and time that should be spent by the democrats debating critical issues, i.e. bringing our troops home, repairing our much damaged global reputation, restoring credibility amongst the community of nations and restoring the Constitution and civil liberties to the United States of America, etc. etc. etc.!!
