Countdown Wednesday: Bush Whacked

Posted: Wednesday, June 06, 2007 8:08 PM by Countdown
Filed Under:

GOP Divide:   It is believed to be a first for a sitting President. At his own party's Presidential debate, he emerges as the... clear loser.  And he isn't even one of the candidates.  Our fifth story on the Countdown: the good news for President Bush: only one of the former members of his cabinet threw him under the bus in New Hampsher last night.  The bad news for Tommy Thompson and the other would-be Republican nominees to succeed Mr. Bush: they won't be running against him.  All in all, it is enough to make a man skip town.  The President, having already done that... still in Germany for the G-8 summit.

Save Scooter!:   The cries for a pardon of Scooter Libby.  Despite the fact that the prosecutor and the judge were both appointed by President Bush...The Right is up in arms that Libby is going to jail.. and even turning on the president for not granting a pardon already.  John Dean on the Conservative reaction to the Libby Sentence.

ODDBALL:  Fun with excersize balls and the coldest case in the long history of cold cases.  Yeah, we have a very special caveman autopsy tonight.

The Plot Continues to ThinOur third story on the Countdown: Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York astonishing some of his critics and comforting some of his friends, by not only not joining the stampede after the revelation of the technically impossible "JFK Pipeline Plot"... but actually encouraging New Yorkers to remember how unlikely terrorism truly is.

The Face of Death:  For ten years, the images were taboo - even to Britain's infamous tabloids.  But in our number two story on the Countdown, for the first time ever tonight, the grainy paparazzi shots showing Princess Diana's last moments alive, have tonight been broadcast on British television. Producers at the network in question, Channel Four, claimed the photos were an essential part of it's documentary entitled "Diana: The witness in the tunnel"

WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD:  Melanie Morgan's flunkie, the National Guard and FOX News' own Roger Ailes jockey for top honors tonight.

Divas Behind Bars:  One's in the klink, the other can't drink...shocking celebrity headlines with In Touch Weekly's Tom O'Neil

Steve Turner - You just outdid yourself sir!! Thanks for the good laugh, AGAIN!!
Todd - KUDOS!! Both Grace and Beck are disgraceful!! I've also emailed each executive at CNN and told them such. The most deserving smack down leveled at Nancy Grace was from Jon Stewart on "The Daily Show". After all charges against the Duke Lacrosse players were FINALLY dropped, Stewart played clips of the b***h over the course of the last year, where she not only flat out said the three were guilty, she made an ass out of herself while doing so!! At the conclusion of the clips, Stewart stated, "What will Nancy Grace say tonight after today's press conference announcing all charges dropped?" He then played the intro to Grace's show, which opened with, "Hi, I'm Jane Velez Mitchell filling in for Nancy Grace tonight..." Stewart then proceeded to state where Grace was. He said, "She's out raping puppies and you can't prove she's not!!" What an appropriate line for "Lady Justice" - NOT!! She's the most dangerous "legal analyst" (a joke in itself) to the criminal justice system ANYWHERE!! Beck is just a flat out bigoted ass who needs to go far, far away!! While FNC would jump at the opportunity to hire the bigot, I don't want to see or hear him EVER on any station!!
Jamie - Yes, we definitely need to "talk" and hopefully you can visit LB soon. Thanks for your support in exposing the bigotry from the "right" against Senator Barack Hussein Obama!!
Sorry Pam, PMSNBC is just as biased with it's reporting, and Countdown hardly qualifies as a news show. A news show reports the news without commentary. Sorry, keith does not qualify as a newscaster. Again, making fun and degrading the president seems to be the norm, so if it is good enough for the president why is it not good enough for Obama ? Because he is black ? Nice try but it won't wash. The dem candidates are afraid they won't be able to handle the questions. Not a good sign for a person having to deal with people who want to kill us. As for the dem debate, I did see one candidate give an answer of what they will do after we pull out. Seems like one of them would have a plan to separate themselves from the pack. They only want to debate when each other decided it was time to run from their vote to go to war. If you truly want to be president, you can't let Roger Ailes hurt your feelings
Keith I love your show but you crossed the line with the insensitivity in talking about Paris Hilton's body cavity. She is a woman, not a piece of meat. What a turn-off!!! You can't COMPLAIN about her media exposure and then CONTRIBUTE to it night after night after night. I am very disappointed. there's a little thing going on in Darfur that you could talk about and actually HELP some people. But you NEVER do..instead we get this nasty junk talk. How come???? BTW, Another poster here has it exactly right, This says more about YOU and who YOU are than it does Paris Hilton.
Hey, Charleston is a great place. After hurricane Hugo destroyed much of the city in 1989, we didn't whine, we rebuilt and repaired. It's more beautiful now than ever. And Vermont doesn't have anything on us, we tried seceeding 150 years ago and all hell broke loose ! Yep, we tortured Blackbeard and beheaded him, Chief Osceola is buried at Ft. Moultrie, and the first shots of the War of Northern Aggresion (Civil War for you libs) were fired by my buddies over at The Citadel. Great dining and night life. We're doing well despite a democrat mayor for the last 21 years. Charleston is the world's best kept secret , and let's keep it that way !
Dear News Hole interns/staff--PLEASE proofread before you post! Spelling mistakes and grammatical errors are an easy way to lose credibilty because people will think you are stupid. "New Hampsher?" "excersize?" ARE YOU #%^ING KIDDING ME? Here, put this link in your favorites: http://www.m-w.com
There's a lot of debate on this blogsite right now about what kind of programming Countdown should do and not do. I'm not a particular fan of the entertainment segments myself (especially American Idol), although I love Oddball, WPITW, and Newsmakers. But regarding last night's #1 story, I confess that I found it just plain hilarious. Consistent with being a progressive (or maybe just as a quirk of my personality), I don't mind a little not-so-innocent fun, especially if it gives me an opportunity to work out my loofah (such as last night), and even if my loofah is a derivative of okra (Thanks for sharing that info, Todd). On the other hand, I do agree that the frivolity can be overdone sometimes, especially when the frivolity is not particularly funny or provocative (as it sometimes is not). If there were lots of choices for similar reporting, then I wouldn't mind 3 segments devoted to the inane and the semi-pornographic (heck, sometimes I would even prefer it), but that's (sadly) just not the case. Countdown is the only show I know of that does the kind of serious reporting it does, and is yet light-hearted enough to suit me. So, I guess that, in the final analysis, whatever Countdown wants to do is fine with me, and if it is not exactly to my taste sometimes, I'll just have to get over it.
How is that Bush dictator directive working out/
Pam: In reading your post above, re: the republican debate and regarding the questions posed by FNC in reference to God. There is a clear and substantial influence by the Bible touting right wing neo-conservatives over both the FNC and the would be republican nominees. And I agree with you in this respect. This is a country made up of a diverse group of people with varying religions and religious beliefs. And I think I can say with confidence that those questions posed by the FNC were in reference to the Christian God and those beliefs of the Christian right, and that any responses were directed to the same. But, if such questions are to be asked of the candidiates, republican or democrat, would it not be more appropriate to speak in terms of one's spirituality. Do those questions by the FNC (and the responses given by the republican candidiates) assume that the answers should please only those members of the right wing Christain neo-conservatives while ignoring the God's and beliefs of other religions or those who may be atheist in this country yet who also have the right of representation? Spirituality can come in many shapes and forms. It can include any and all Gods and any and all religions, or no Gods or no religions. Spirituality defines that which lies within a man's heart and soul, and if one is truly spiritual, and not just Godly, it then presupposes there exist a belief in kindness, fair play, love of your fellow man, love of life, respect and love for nature and acknowledgment that man is not the greatest power here on earth. So as you have answered for yourself above I will ask of myself. Am I interested in a candidate's relation to or belief in God as posed by the FNC. No, I am not, especially when the questions and answers are obviously centered around only one segment of our society. But am I interested in a candidate's spirituality. Yes, I am. Very much so. Give me a candidate who sincerely states they are spiritual any day over a candidate who says he / she believes in God. For those who are spiritual will be much more tolerant and accepting of all people, no matter their beliefs or disbeliefs, than a person who simply states they are Godly.
So impressive that Republican politicians are "Seeing the Light" after all these long years of funding a debacle. These people are not stupid, even though they play spin-spouting idiots on television. They have known for years that they are sending Americans to Iraq so they can die for a "Victory" that the admnistration cannot even define. Is victory the day that every Iraqi will love America? That will never happen. Is victory the day that the Iraqi government can run its own country without being propped up by our guns? The only way to find that out is to leave. Now we are hearing that most Republicans actually know that this is a mess but they are afraid to say anything in public. They'll say this off the record, gutless weasels that they are. They still march in lock step whenever there is a vote in Congress. Every one of them should be sent home - or better yet sent to the Iraq that they helped to create.
Larry/Charleston: (Don't do it, I say to myself. Get your hands off that keyboard! Wait! Wait! Don't press submit! Dammit you dumm**s! You know you don't want to chat with this guy even if it is a nice comment. Sigh - I've never listened to my internal warning until too late.) I just have to say that as a true southerner you know that we of the genteel class prefer to call that most unfair conflict, "The late unpleasantness". (smile)
Larry - I'll address your responses individually. First of all, Keith Olbermann does not have a "Fair & Balanced” Logo underneath his broadcast, as does FNC, nor does MSNBC advertise as a “Fair & Balanced” network. FNC not only states this on their station, but also pays for advertising on CNN and other stations, promoting they are a “Fair & Balanced” network. Therefore your argument is not suitable and a badly chosen one so we can move on. Keith, like the “newscasters” from FNC “can” quality as “newscasters” as could I if I had a cable station and reported news. However it is the legitimacy with regards to their truthfulness, in addition to what they are reporting, or lack of, that is the issue in making this determination. Both John Gibson and Sean Hannity of FNC have lied repeatedly and been exposed their lies. Each has lied about the voting records of Democratic Senators, and specifically Senators Boxer, Kennedy and Kerry. In addition, they have both lied about the voting record of Speaker Pelosi in the run up to the elections of November, 2006. Bill O’Reilly does not even report news any longer. He has body language segments, “Miller Time”, and refuses to report or even discuss George W. Bush, Scooter Libby, the conflict in Iraq, etc. While it is apparent his reasoning is because there is no good “republican” news and has therefore abandoned reporting “news” altogether. Keith Olbermann, whether you agree with his “Special Comments” or not, DOES report news and current events throughout his broadcast. Therefore, Keith Olbermann does qualify as a newscaster. Moving on to the democratic debate on FNC. The democrats are not afraid of answering questions posed by FNC Larry, as after watching the first republican debate on FNC, I could have answered those questions after I had completed FIRST GREADE in Catholic school. I completed twelve years, so I know. No Larry, the democratic candidates have stood in solidarity against bigoted comments made by the president of FNC, Roger Ailes. A “legitimate news organization” should not have a president who vocalizes his bigotry, attacks a candidate based on the Arabic origin of his or her name, allows one its’ “newscasters” to make fun of his “ears” at a State of the Union Address and actually promotes the reporting of NEWS!! Also, Roger Ailes has never “hurt my feelings”, I have found his comments both racist and insulting; however, I would never let an ass like that hurt my feelings, as I save those “feelings” for people I genuinely care about, those whose opinions I value, or are important in my life. Also, after watching the republican debate hosted by FNC, 99% of the questions dealt with God, evolution and abortion. The remaining 1% dealt with national security questions. I believe, with all sincerity, the democrats would laugh at the questions posed; in addition, they would all mop the floor with the republicans, as the republicans have not had to answer MANY questions on national security in the debates.
C A - Another well-written, well-thought out and beautiful piece of writing. I agree that spirituality is critical in how we live our lives; the basis for making our decisions' how we treat other human beings, both in this country and around the world and is the heart of what we are as a person. Spirituality, in the manner in which you describe, is most certainly important for anyone running for public office. I staunchly oppose attacks based on a belief in "God" as you eloquently described above. An atheist can be a spiritual person, while not believing in God. You articulated my inner feelings perfectly and I thank you.
Hey Larry: Was Black Beard a republican or democrat or just plain indepedent. I remember reading some kind of a plaque there about him when I visited but don't recall if he was affiliated with any party or if he was just pretty much a non-political revolutionary loner. You know in New Orleans they bury people above the ground because of the low sea level and flooding and all that. Do they do that in Charleston. I can't recall seeing any above the ground crypts around there. Just wondered. Might be interesting to walk around such places at night just to see if ole Black Beard is wondering around looking for those who hung'em high.
Pam from Calif. sorry your not on vacation, you never responded to Slick Willie's pardon of Susan Rosenberg, and FALN Terrorists, you keep avoiding the issue. Please save the "you sir " stuff for someone else. Todd from New Orleans made the bleed over stuff very clear me, could you please respond. thanks
Say Paul Ibsen: On the Clinton stuff. What is the purpose? Can't you people quit comparing current and past presidents and just evaluate each on their own merit. I seem to recall that it is Bush in office now so is he not the one that we should be reviewing his performance. All Americans, who have a right to do so. I mean, he does work for us does he not. Why keep bringing up and reviewing an ex-employees of ours?
Paul, The FALN comment is on another thread. The way things are set up now is confusing and hard to read--and even harder to keep track of where different posts are. My guess is that the blog might be more successful than anticipated. There are formats that work better and include ways to preview and edit posts for spelling errors, punctuation. An technical upgrade would be very nice. And, of course, the mighty Pam may have already responded but the post may still be out there in space...But I will gladly stand in for Pam here. Who cares? I took the time to look at the Clinton pardon "scandal" in general. The FALN pardon was, indeed, very controversial. But controversial means that there was more than one side to the debate. Human rights groups and religious figures had petitioned for this pardon, citing a number of factors including length of incarceration. One condition of pardon was that the pardonees renounce violence. I know an agent involved in investigating FALN so I am well aware of the danger the group posed in their time. I won't say that Clinton was right on this one, but James Comey (Republican former Acting Atty. General) investigated the pardons in general and found no wrong-doing on the part of Clinton. My own view is that pardons should be few and far between and saved for cases where people are either clearly innocent but incarcerated because the system won't acknowledge an error, the original sentence was disproportionate and the convicted person has served a sentence similar to that of others convicted. I was opposed to the pardon of Richard Nixon and still am; I think Clinton should not have pardoned Marc Rich, as that stunk of political favor; I can see why people are still angry about the FALN. But there were others outside the FALN who argued for that pardon, and it is hard to see any political gain for Clinton in it. So far, it's been eight years and none of them have committed a terrorist attack yet, but the jury is out. But what does any of this have to do with Libby, who has a modest 30 month sentence, will almost certainly do time in a minimum security facility, and will come out to some cushy job funded by his rich neo-con friends? He hasn't even served any time! He has been convicted of a felony! The question of why he lied to the FBI and the grand jury suggests he may be covering up for those above him (see Watergate). The whining about Poor Scooter has nothing to do with the Clinton pardons (which stand or fall on their own merit) and everything to do with the way this administration sees its own people as accountable to know one, totally above the law. "I am the decider!!" Meanwhile, people disappear into secret prisons without trial, at the hands of the American Government, which mocks the whole idea of democracy. The FALN terrorists were bad guys. We caught them, tried them and put them in jail. They served long sentences and to pardon them, an American president had to open himself to both terrific criticism (perhaps well-founded) and a criminal investigation from the D of Justice that found him innocent of wrongdoing. We can disagree with any or all of what happened, but all events unfolded within the rule of law. That is what matters.
A sorry excuse Pam, just because Hugo Chavez advertises how wondeful he is , or the late Yasser Arafat proclaiming his peaceful intentions, does not make it so. MSNBC is no better than Fox, Olberman is an entertainer like Maher , not a newscaster. Newscasters report the news without bias (supposedly) and without their personal commentary. The dems are a pitiful bunch who are going to draw unneeded attention to their weakness in dealing with people who disagree with them. I still say let the debates continue with whoever shows up ( good chance for Gravel and Kusinich ) and let them rip the front runners (cowards). And I repeat, if you can't deal with Fox News, you can't deal with Putin or any other leader. If Ailes offended John Edwards, so be it. Edwards has offended me with his phoneyness for years. As a matter of fact, liberals offend me so maybe it is a good thing that they aren't being heard outside of their own little George Soros neighborhood.
Blackbeard was definately a dem, always looking for ways to rob the rich for his own power. And yes, Charleston is below sea level and has many cripts and graves above ground. we are know as the Holy City for the number of Churchs in the city. My church was built in 1706 and is the oldest surviving church in the south. America's most historical city.
The liberals boycotting Fox debates is great. The less we see of these idiots the better off the country will be. However, it is puzzling that they want to give up free airtime to an audience much larger than MSNBC and CNN combined. Got to be something else and I think Larry has it right. Don't want to br embarassed having to answer questions that doesn't have to do with who voted for the war first and who didn't support the war when he was a state senator. If you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen.
There was a video clip on one of the news stations yesterday showing Bush with a beer at the G-8 summit. Is it possible that the recovering alcoholic went off the wagon? While questions are being asked about a possible virus or food he may have eaten to cause him to be sick this morning, why isn't anyone questioning what he was drinking? If this seems unfair, let's be reminded how many admired him while he was running for office because he had been born again and became a non-drinker.
Just a couple of observations (maybe quick, maybe not). Yes, I too am sick and tired of Countdown (and Scarborough and Hardball) "updating" me on Paris, Lindsay et al., and I really don't want to think of them, much less hear about them. If we have to cover celebrities, why not talk about Geldof and Bono at the G-8? However, all of the shock and horror over Countdown's tasteless bit of humor regarding Paris because it is "disrespectful" is, I think, misplaced. If Paris and those of her ilk wish to treat themselves as nothing more than a piece of meat, or a sodden sideshow, then they are free game to be treated EXACTLY that way. Just please, please, PLEASE stop wasting time on one of the best shows on TV to do it! I would have preferred instead to hear about the immigration debate and a very serious issue within it that is gaining more and more credence on both sides, that of national id cards. Gee, what a novel idea. I wonder why no one else has done it? Oh, wait. It's not the ephemeral "Big Brother" overtone that worries me. It is this: Someone else DID use national id cards: the Republic of South Africa during the era of apartheid. Those cards were literally known as a Verdompass (that damned pass). All citizens had to carry one, as did Blacks from the "independent" Bantustans who were legally, yep, you guessed it "guest workers" inside South Africa. If issued, I will, in all likelihood, never be asked to show my card, just as white South Africans were almost never asked to produce theirs. I'm a white male with an obvious Southern accent. You're not going to mistake me for an illegal immigrant, even one from Canada! Who will be asked (repeatedly)? Ms. Gutierrez who was born and raised in Sausalito will be when she goes to cash a check, or buy groceries with a Visa card, or gets stopped for speeding. Mr. Hmong, who grew up in Madison, WI when he goes to ask for a small business loan, or to enroll his son in a university, or when he goes to pay his property tax bill. Worst of all, Mr. Jones, who grew up in Selma but who spent three years in a study abroad in Ghana, partially to discover his family heritage. He'll be asked for it when he is showing clients residential properties in an affluent suburb. And what are the legal penalties for these AMERICANS caught without their card? Well, in South Africa, fines and jail time were common. Incarceration was routine until residency could be established. Do the police take Mr. Jones "down to the station" to clear up this whole mess? Do they issue him a $150 citation? Beatings and even deportation to the Homelands were common, do we go that far with legal immigrants who have somehow misplaced or lost this card? And no one can calculate the permanent impression and degradation upon those of color who will be forced by these penalities to carry their cards constantly. Just another little reminder that I belong and they do not. I grew up in (and still am an active member of) the Southern Baptist Church. So no, the conservatives DO NOT have a cornerstone on faith, or even on the Christian version of God. We were (and still are taught) a little song that I thought went "Red and Yellow, Black and White, They are precious in His sight" Apparently, some of our citizenry want to change the verse to "Red and Yellow, Black and White, They're allowed in their place" What a shame. And last, to Larry. Southern man to Southern man. My daddy always said, there's always a pile of dog crap laying around, but you don't have to walk across the street to step in it. I try not to do that, but you force me to take you on. You are offended by liberals and regale us with the wisdom of the Fox Nazi Channel. Alright, that's your opinion and hey, good for you. But one has to wonder about your intelligence. I mean even my dog stays away from things he doesn't like. He's particularly scarce when I get the shampoo for his bath. I myself am offended by the taste and smell of Brussel Sprouts, so I don't waste time shopping for them, cooking them, or eating them. Why would any intelligent being claim to absolutely abhor something, then spend so much time involved in it? Hey, us "liberals," and I bet it stuns you to know we inhabit your precious South, too (and yes, my family is originally from here-as a matter of fact, the last known address for my father's predecessors other than NC and Va is London, sometime in the 17th Century, for my Mother's family, Cornwall sometime in the 17th Century) LIKE having you here, we are always looking for a good laugh. I just wonder why you would willfully put yourself in a place full of people that offend you. Maybe it's not your intelligence that is at issue, maybe you just want to pick fights, be a bully? If that's it, well, my daddy taught us how to deal with those steaming piles too.
John Doe, Great post. You're a wise man, and I would love to meet your daddy.
C A - AMEN!!!! Paul - Quit the diversionary tactics and while you're at it, Rudy Guiliani "IS" running for president, so in keeping with "CURRENT EVENTS", "Move.On"(.ORG) - SIR!!!
Linda - WOW!! You can fill in for me any time!! Paul -SIT DOWN!! The "Almighty Linda" has just eaten your lunch!! On behalf of ALL those disgusted by the neo con, hypocritical right-wing zealots, a.k.a. "Paul Ibsen Newark NJ", “Tom Delay”, Newt Gingrich, etc, etc.!!!!, who cannot defend George W. Bush (IMPOSSIBLE ANYWAY!!), without using the name of "President Bill Clinton”,” Bill Clinton", "Slick Willie", or ANY other name chooses to refer to the former president, a much deserved THANK YOU LINDA!! You ROCK!!
James, NYC - I see a common thread amongst you right-wing, neo con zealots!! Like Larry, you NEVER take the time to actually READ the comments people post!! Most ALL of you fly into an absurd rage, your arguments lack ANY AND ALL substance and you resort to slinging insults. ALL of those like you should return to kindergarten, where you would fit it with the "CHILDREN" who argue and blabber on as they do. The difference, they are five years old and have an excuse!! James, SIT DOWN or grow up and debate the issues!!
Larry - You have just proven my argument. Most ALL of you NEVER read what we post, as Independent told you yesterday. You state above, "If Ailes offended John Edwards, so be it. Edwards has offended me with his phoneyness for years." I NEVER mentioned Edwards, and specifically leveled my criticism in MULTIPLE posts to Ailes' insults, racial slurs and bigotry directed at Senator BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA!! Please, like James -NYC, SIT DOWN!! You bring no debate to these blogs, you ignore what people write and this statement by YOU above proves my argument. It shows you and rest, like the Sean Hannity's of the world who scream over anyone he as much as “smells” disagrees with him, NEVER hear what “we” have to say!!! You do the same here!! READ LARRY then post!! Otherwise, Move.On.Org!!!!
John Doe, Raleigh, NC - A brilliant piece of writing. To elaborate on both your question and answer, "I just wonder why you would willfully put yourself in a place full of people that offend you. Maybe it's not your intelligence that is at issue, maybe you just want to pick fights, be a bully?” You are correct. I have one thing to add. They are full of themselves and so consumed by their egos they must post here where they "stand out". If they posted on, as you put it, "The Fox Nazi Channel" blog, they would just fit in with the normal neo con, right-wing whacko crowd!! This is not good enough for the Larry's and the like of his mentality. They require "attention" and they must be the "CENTER" of this attention to boost their egos and LOW self-esteem!! I enjoyed are writing sir and thank you!!
"They", the posters who shall remain nameless and are behaving badly, are getting what they want. A firestorm. They are arsonists deriving pleasure from destruction. They are arsonists who destroy and never build. They are arsonists who "burn" civil discourse because they never listen and contibute do meaningful dialogue. Let's stop giving them anything to flame the fires. Unless they post something that has merit and doesn't contain slurs, let's ignore them. If they post something, however disagreeable it may be to our positions, that indicates well-thought reasoning, let's play ball!! Repeat of what I've said many times, I really really really want to hear someone say something positive about Mr. Bush and his administration, the Republicans in any office, and the conservative position in general. You "liberals" please don't come back to me with smart remarks about whether there is or isn't anything positive to say. I am sincere in wanting to hear a different view on things especially if it isn't couched in "well..Clinton did it" type of reasoning. Thank you.
C A and Larry, I think you are both wrong about Blackbeard. He was a libertine anarchist. And a snappy dresser from what I hear.
Well, this may surprise you, Independent, but I will step forward and offer you something (not much) that is commendable about the Bush administration. 1) They have at least been consistent in their pursuit of the foreign policy agenda. I wholeheartedly disagree with a policy based upon fear and bullying, but they have shown a dogged determination to implement their policy. Someone else wrote that they aren't stupid, and that person is right. Every one within the administration is well aware of the feelings of the majority of the population, yet they steadfastly pursue what they believe is right. There is a kind of horrible respect for one who will hold their position (regardless of how myopic) in the face of outrage and venom. I will also say that the President has finally tried to show some leadership on the issue of immigration. He has tried to pull his party away from the Nativist/KKK/Know-Nothing Party stance that was de riguer a century and more ago. Unfortunately, he is now in no position to lead a Conga Line, much less a national party. I will say this personally about the President, as well. Unlike Bill Clinton (whom I admire tremendously in many other ways) Bush's travels among personal demons have led him to a PERSONALLY better place, and that is nothing to dismiss casually. That does not qualify one to lead others, however. Hitler never even looked at another woman after he met Eva Braun and he never took a drink. FDR was a notorious womanizer, and Churchill was drunk almost all day, every day. I'll take the latter two, thank you. I hope this shows you that, yes, there IS a common ground, and there can be, if not commonality, then a kind of understanding that exists regardless of "party" affiliation. (I will, however, stop short of offering ANYTHING nice about our VEEP). There are conservatives like Scarborough and Carlson who, although I disagree with them 9 times out 10, I can respect for putting their point out there, arguing it well, and listening to the responses. I respect Arlen Specter for the years and years of devoted service to this country, I respect McCain even more for that. I respect Bob Dole for his courage, his leadership, and his (this is gonna sound strange) compassion, even for those he obviously doesn't agree with or feel comfortable with. I respect the current president's father for the same things. Unfortunately, these voices have been shouted down by the Bill O'Reilly's, Rush Limbaughs, Dick Cheneys, Karl Roves and Tom Tancredos of the world. Rabid, rapacious, belittling, and utterly dismissive in their contempt for any and everything they don't like, understand, or care to understand. They prefer to hire lawyers WHO HAVE NEVER TRIED A CASE to run the Justice Department rather than qualified attorneys who don't vote for them. There is good. There used to be compromise, when both sides were allowed to be good Americans and good people of faith regardless of the political party affiliation. Those days have left us, and if we do not want a country divided against itself, they need to return. In the meantime, we have baiting, and bullying, and its alright when Dick Cheney (or Larry) talks about large swathes of the AMERICAN public offending or disgusting them or telling those people to go f--- themselves, but when those people smack back, everybody gets upset. Again, my good old daddy said if you can't take it, don't dish it out. And to Todd(and sorry Independence but this will partially debunk my prior argument)-snappy dresser he was, but let's examine his M.O.: rape, murder, pillage, plunder, and destroy anything in order to enrich himself. Sounds like Blackbeard. Also sounds like Dick Cheney. Blackbeard therefore must be Republican. Besides, here in NC, NO democrat could command the following and ongoing popularity that Blackbeard does! One last thing-thank you Pam and Linda!
John Doe - masterful. I agree with almost everything you say and where I disagree doesn't matter. Thanks for a really nice recap. Do you think it is possible to have such a write up (or several small ones) about conservative policies and positions? For instance, the immigration thing. I happen to believe that the piece of proposed legislation that was killed in the Senate yesterday deserved to die. Not even from a policy standpoint: it was bad law. Tried to read it and couldn't get past the 2nd page. Can't remember how many pages there were (over 300???). What is the conservative position on immigration, illegal immigration (one of my issues is how everyone seems to be equating the two), securing the southern border with a wall, handling the illegal immigrants already inside the border, etc etc etc. Is it possible for someone to talk about the actual honest to god issue surrounding immigration without throwing out sound bites? Without any of us on either side resorting to slurs and outrageous statements? Thanks again for getting the pump primed, maybe some people will start writing in with real positions that will help me, and perhaps all of us, clear my thoughts about things. If I weren't so issue-focused, I'd feed back some thoughts about some of the people you mentioned as I got pretty close to them during my 10 years in DC. Unfortunately, that comes closer to gossip and we need to stay on the issues. Sure would be fun to swap stories with you though. Raleigh's a great place used to spend a lot of time there on business trips.
Thank you for the response Linda from Pa. ( and no Pam Calif. she did not have me for lunch I have a wife that makes mine ) You never addressed the Susan Rosenberg pardon. Also btw I could care less about Mark Rich, strictly money and politics, the way of BOTH PARTIES now. Lastly no one answers questions posed directly on this blog. The President is allowed to pardon people the DOJ probably rubber stamps the approval. Well thats my last try to get an honest answer on this one. Thanks again Linda, in all honesty, but sounds like a telemarketer or infomercial, reading off a card response. Please no offense but I do not agree Thanks
 Who among us will stop
this war?

Answer: Ron Paul

Please have Ron Paul on the show! I urge you to not help the Fox network in their efforts to silence/discredit him.
