The 'President's Cluelessness'

Posted: Sunday, June 24, 2007 9:00 PM by Countdown

We know we've assigned a lot of reading for a Sunday - but this Rolling Stone investigation is required, sorry. The more articles like this we read, the more we realize that one of the men in the photo above is the President of the United States, and one seems to be not much more than our national mascot.

The Secret Campaign of President Bush's Administration to Deny Global Warming.
Cheney took full advantage of the president's cluelessness, bringing the CEQ (the Council on Environmental Quality, a policy arm of the White House) into his own portfolio. "The environment and energy issues were really turned over to him from the beginning," Whitman says. The CEQ became Cheney's shadow EPA, with industry calling the shots. To head up the council, Cheney installed James Connaughton, a former lobbyist for industrial polluters, who once worked to help General Electric and ARCO skirt responsibility for their Superfund waste sites.

Industry swiftly took advantage of its new friend in the White House. In a fax sent to the CEQ on February 6th, 2001 - two weeks after Bush took office - ExxonMobil's top lobbyist, Randy Randol, demanded a housecleaning of the scientists in charge of studying global warming. Exxon urged CEQ to dump Robert Watson, who chaired the IPCC, along with Rosina Bierbaum and Mike MacCracken, who had coordinated the National Assessment

Exxon's wish was the CEQ's command. According to an internal e-mail obtained by Rolling Stone, Connaughton's first order of business - even before his nomination was made public - was to write his White House colleagues-to-be from his law firm of Sidley & Austin. He echoed Exxon's call that Bierbaum, the acting director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, be "dealt." In the end, each of the scientists on Exxon's hit list was replaced. "It was clear there was a strong lobby and activity against me by some in the energy industry - especially ExxonMobil," says Watson.

Sigh!  Preaching to the choir.  Now if those pesky little people in Congress would get off of their collective asses and just do something about all of this!

Again, sigh!!!!!!
Well, after reading the Washington Post article about Cheney, I had yet another OMFG! moment when reading the Rolling Stone article.  It looks as though Cheney is the Cyrano de Bergerac of the Bush administration; Bush speaks but the words and policies come from The Dick.
Sadly this is no surprise to anyone who has been paying attention for the last 6 years. Cheney was tasked with finding and vetting a VP for Bush, and after searching far and wide he found.....himself! Imagine his glee at the realization of all his dreams of power comming true, and the added benefit of flying under the radar as VP. Hopefully the tipping point will be reached sooner rather than later and impeachment will be put back on the table. Perhaps if there had been serious long-term consequences for the Nixon crowd (many of whom are still up to the same old, same old),we would not be in this situation today. I am not holding out much hope for the sudden regeneration of spine as far as the dems are concerned.
Cardinal Richelieu returns to turn another great nation into a vessel for self-serving gratification.
So we know who the villians are.
Who will come forth to be the heroes and restore our once proud nation?
Besides Keith?
This is the same thing they have done with EVERY department and agency of the federal government - hired and appointed industry insiders, lobbyists and cronies.  They have turned our government into a fetid toxic dump.

Great picture BTW - fuzzy "decider" and in-focus Dr. Evil/Darth Veeper.

Congress - get some balls!
OK - What are we going to do?

Are we just going to continue to rant about this? Is there any organized movement going on anywhere in this country that is focused on bringing these guys to account?

I'm ready to sign up.
The early governmental founders recognized the possibility of power from excessive wealth generating a flaw in the mechanism. Lawyers (a few god ones) saw the potential and passed laws against monopolies in restraint of free trade. We have read hundreds of books by now on the potential and real threat of super corporations and yet we wonder where our country went. "We The People" will either die or hopefully get so angry that they will act. Globalization is evil from the ground up and it is poised to be the end of our nation. Where do you stand, because stand or not it is upon us now.
Well, they've sold OUT our economic position in the world, so, why not sell US out too?  "Lock, stock, and BARREL" 0il, that is...
Once again, a Picture's worth a thousand...make that, eight words.  Cheney is sinister, Bush is out of focus.  The VP, wearing his Constitution Funeral Director Outfit, is triggering his remote control of the Presidential Backpack Teleprompter, launching Dubya into "Bull Cheerleader" mode. Hi-tech Puppeteering in action. Time to fly the Flag, upside down, folks.  The Ship is Sinking.
Good Monday morning! Right now, I'm not awake enough to offer any more insights than to echo Jamie's (Chula Vista) and Lynn's (New Orleans) comments. Maybe I'll think of something more "brilliant" to say later. I'm sure I'll have more thoughts after I read "part deux" of the POST article.
Get rid of every f'ing one of them by any means necessary.
uh, not exactly nooz. where ya been??
Lynn, I would love to believe that these men who have graduated from "bad" to "evil" will be put to the same justice system that they've run roughshod over for years now, but with the Justice department run by the dolt water-boy Gonzo, and congress as cowed by the administration as any puppet government any fiction writer ever convieved of, I think it unlikely that we'll ever see such things happen.
Wow what a revelation. Our Congress don't do shit why should the President of the Senate head of the "don't do shitters " and the I am on the take by the Oil Industry Lobbyist and big time ties to Halliburton be any shitless wonder?
I wonder how many of their sorry asses are on the take and trust me there some.Just check the contributions by the "K" street Oil lobby clan. big Daddy Dubya War Bucks got some big bucks last election form them.
Congress don't care they proved that when the appropriation's bill came up.
Pelosi is already setting this little deal so they can start bringing troops home next year.Hmmm election year.Could start this fall by Christmas and before but that twit and Reid both are playing politics with our troops lives. No different than the administration really.
Nope they are busy over there collecting access and election money.
They could have fixed this a long time ago.But nope here comes 4th of July recess whoopee hurray go home and make a speech about how your helping the troops. You aren't doing shit to help the troops

DICK Vice President Cheney has been on the take for so long how is this some kind of new news? And Dubya's ties to Oil?I guess I am a lot more stupid than I thought.Am I in a dream?Has there been a coup by Duckin Dick Der Dickhur. I can assure Scooter's little butt don't mean squat to this guy or Gonzales.

Hell Dubya's probably afraid of him.Now if Congress and the Judicial Branch and Judiciary Committees can't find some way to bring this slime ball grub worm up on conflict of interest charges.Well what the hell it's time to kiss it all goodbye.Where the hell is our Sam Ervin. This gutless bunch of turks in Congress whooo God forbid we upset the status quo.
How hard is it to start looking in to conflict of interest here.
I mean its like a case of crabs all over Cheney,Dubya,Gonzo and every slicker involved with theses guys. They're all scratching like hell with their hands in the pot pie.
Any threat to the bottom line of corporations must be minimized or ignored. These jackals will happily destroy what is left of this planet as long as they can get away scot-free to count their money along with their friends. Is this really a surprise?
The pathetic small percentage of those who still support Bush-Cheney is given more credence than the large number of the rest of us who have seen through this madness over the past six years.  Please wake up before the nightmare gets even worse.
Pam: From an earlier thread where you responded to me regarding the issuie below.

I agree that it is the responsibility of all citizens to try and eliminate bigotry and to persuade others to re-think their prejudices by way of good works, setting the example and communicating displeasure with another's prejudices. But I don't think the bloggers in here have remained silent with Scott or have accepted his prejudices by way of silence. Most have responded to Scott their displeasure numerous times. There is a difference between expressing displeasure with one's prejudices (not remaining silent) and giving continuous audience to one who is bigoted after having expressed displeasure with their attitudes on numerous occasions. No one here has remained silent with Scott, but many here continue to give him audience by responding to his posts even after acknowledging and stating they feel he is a hopeless cause. If he is a hopeless cause why respond? If he is not a hopeless cause and one wishes to accept the very difficult task of bringing him into the fold (changing his attitude) then confronting and challenging (sometimes using name-calling as he so aptly does himself) is not the way to do it.

Take a lesson from Martin Luther King. If he was alive today and felt Scott was a hopeless cause he would not give him audience but would move on into circles where he could make a difference. If on the other hand he felt there was still a chance he could salvage Scott, he certainly would not do so by confrontation even though Scott uses confrontation. Martin Luther would have ...... we'll I'll take it no further as I don't want to sound like I am lecturing....but you think about it and give me your thoughts as to how you think Martin Luther King would have tried to bring Scott into the fold.

Also, remember that those who wish to take responsibility and accountability for changing the world, or even the prejudices of a few either by way of setting example or confronting bigotry, that that person better understand it will require a thick skin because those they will be attempting to enlighten or change will in the beginning say and express some very mean and hateful things. I can't imagine what Martin Luther King must have heard throughout his lifetime, and in the end was even murdered by a bigot. But he knew that rather then confrontation "peaceful" (as you state at the end of your posts) persuasion (even with hateful bigots) is the way to go. So tell me, if Martin Luther King had not moved past Scott because he felt he was a hopeless cause, but felt Scott could be saved or salvaged, just how would Dr. King have gone about communicating with Scott on these blogs, the same confrontation that Scott uses, anger towards Scott, exchanges of name calling, how?
Hey B.A. don't hold back!  Tell us how you really feel about this! LOL.
Agreee with your entire post.  Thanks for expressing it so potently.
Who wants to bet every one of us on these blogs (possible exception: Jerry from TX) has some kind of surveilance being run on 'em for the things we say about these criminals?  Does that sound extremely paranoid?  Yep- sure does.  But then again, if anyone had told me a few years ago these incredible things were going on that are just now coming to light, I'd have said they were tripping on some mighty fine smoke.
Independent Texas   and Todd    go to

 http://ImpeachForPeace.org/ImpeachNow.html

This organization is working with Dennis Kucinich to impeach cheney using Jefferson's Manual section LIII,603 which "states that impeachment may be set in motion by charges preferred by a memorial, which is usually referred to a committee for examination; and

The memorial goes on to set forth that, Richard B. Cheney has intentionally misled the public regarding the threat.........."   It goes on to list a few more of cheney's misdeeds

Check it out and let me know what you think.    Thanks
The 'Cluelessness' tag makes me think of the movie 'Clueless'.  The Valley Girl flick about the 'shallow-as-a-soap-dish' lives of the new-vo rich.  It could be remade with Dubya, in drag of course, tooling around Georgetown with Rudy G., also in drag. "Ya sher I'm Betty enuff in this purple MuMu, Rudy?...I mean Juliette?"  "Fer Sher Dubya...I mean Georgette...you are like, the full Prom Queen! and that's a Fuschia MuMu." "Fer Sher?" "Totally!"  And if Cheney wanted to show his solidarity with his daughter's preferences, he could produce a "Brokeback Mountain 2", with Rosie O'Donnell and Ellen deGeneres herding the sheep this time.  Now there is a Double-Feature I'd pay double to watch.  At this point in America's future, we need a couple of laughs.
Ultimately it seems the greatest threat to democratic government in the world is --  Exxon/Mobil. They will see to it that we can never elect a government representing the wishes of the people in this country. Bush/Cheney and company are their bought and paid front men.
Also  go to impeach bush website..  Woodstock NY presented a petition to the House of Representatives recently to begin proceedings against bush and cheney.  There is a lot of impeachment interest out there
If V.P. Cheney say,s he and his office are not part of the executive branch , then he should be made to testify before congress on the dealings of the energy policy, and the Iraq war, and the leaked information about Mrs Plume of the CIA .HE SHOULD  NOT BE GIVEN EXECUTIVE PRIVLEDGE IF HE IS NOT PART OF THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH, AND IF HE REFUSES TO TESTIFY, HE SHOULD STAND TRIAL FOR TREASON AGAINST THE STATE, AS WELL AS BEING IMPEACHED.This president and vice president have done more to harm this nation than any other enemy of ours. It,s time people wake up and smell the coffee.
I agree with Lynn, New Orleans:  "Sadly this is no surprise to anyone who has been paying attention for the last 6 years."  It's not like Cheney hasn't been up to these tricks from the beginning.  And if we start digging into the Halliburton war-profiteering, that will really make us sick.  All that money for Halliburton/KBR and not enough money for body armor and properly designed armored vehicles to protect the men and women we sent over to Iraq to fight Cheney's war.

But it looks to  me that the media rats are also jumping off the sinking ship.  Just pay attention to where they land next.  And don't vote for that person....

Cheney has been running this country since January of 2001!! Even the republicans knew George W. Bush was too stupid to be president!! In one of the 2004 presidential debates, John Kerry stated, "Dick Cheney is the president of this country and has been for nearly four years." He was 100% correct and it's a damn shame more people didn't pay attention to THAT line!!

I believe many of us KNEW who was really in charge, which is why Colin Powell left office after the pseudo president and moron's first term.  He couldn't deal with this ass (Cheney) either!!

B A - You are right on target with this statement, "if Congress and the Judicial Branch and Judiciary Committees can't find some way to bring this slime ball grub worm up on conflict of interest charges. Well what the hell it's time to kiss it all goodbye."

Indeed Congress should NOT go on recess and should NOT go on ONE more recess until our troops our brought home; this Administration is held account and brought to justice and our country begins the process of restoring America!!

This is SHAMEFUL and I hold each and every member of Congress in contempt, with the exception of Congressman Dennis Kucinich and Senator Russ Feingold, the ONLY Senator to vote against "The Patriot Act"!! These two wonderful men have shown courage and have put "Country before Self". Sadly, BOTH have been ignored!!

DISGUSTED!!

With regards to our prior discussion it is quite interesting the kind of responses I get.  I am accused of being a zealot, or pro-Christian bigot simply for pointing out the obvious - Islamic extremism is violent and dangerous force in the world today, more so that other religious extremism.  I may have overstated the case by grouping in moderate Muslims for which I apologize to any moderate Muslim who may have been offended.   Calling me a zealot or pro-Christian bigot is inaccurate as (and I hate reveal anything personal) I could most accurately be called an agnostic, with Christian traditions.   No where, not once have I proclaimed a belief in Christian superiority, and I challenge anyone to show me an in context quote to prove otherwise.
In any case I come to this blog to argue, I like to argue and it is no fun to argue with people I agree with, it is far more challenging to argue with those I don’t agree with.  The challenge here is though somewhat limited.  Believe it or not I do not insult unless I have been insulted first, then I figure it is fair game.  Anyone who has been the target of an insult from me has insulted me first – period – it is how I play the game – I do not draw first blood – it is my rule of engagement.  I have a thick skin, if I didn’t I would probably - like most here - stick to a safe and cozy place where everyone agreed with me, but I find circle jerks boring

Todd, attempting to use information theory from the physics perspective to prove your point is at best pseudoscience at worst the fallacious argument type of Augment By Gibberish.  Stick to pretending you're a lawyer.
C A - I agree; which is why I started my comment with, "I disagree, IN PART", etc.  You are most correct that Scott is hopeless, and as Linda pointed out, he is also "unteachable".

My statement was directed at the "Scott's of the country" and indeed I do not believe Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would have given up on ALL of the "Scott's of this country".

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. may have given up on Scott, but NEVER on continuing carrying his message.  His fight for civil justice, equality, peace, tolerance and the like would have continued, and ruthlessly.  Heard over and over again, I certainly believe “some people” changed as a result of this.

I am appalled by Scott’s thinking and behavior; however, my post was intended to be directed at "we the people", as proof we may not be able to change "all the people"; however, we must never give up trying to root out the evil that exists in our society.  We must never sit in silence and simply ignore such behavior.  I was speaking in a general way.  We can and have changed laws based on "people's" bigotry and intolerance; and we can and have changed many people’s way of thinking.

Indeed, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would have NEVER given up on his crusade to spread such a message; and while you are 1,000% correct about Scott, we cannot ignore "Scott's" of the world, or we will lose sight of the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This was the intent of my post, and if I did not articulate myself as well as I should have, I'm sorry.

In addition, with the apathy from Congress shown towards the current Administration, who have "sat in silence", my words are meant for them also!!

Thanks C A!!

PEACE!!
Pam: I totally concur with you that none should ever give up the right for civil justice, equality, peace and tolerance.

Scott: I am afraid no one else will make the offer at this point. But do you wish any advice as to how to continue to argue and disagree (based on your beliefs and not just for the sake of arguing) without really pissing people off in here. If so let me know. If not, just tell me to kiss your a-- and mind my own business. won't hure my feelings.
Pam, that's "fight" and I also suppose "right".

Scott: that was, will not "hurt" my feelings.

Sorry about the typos. Been a long morning.
Get bent, fascist puppet.  And you know who I mean.  Just because you are too STUPID to understand physics does not prove anything.  Stick to pretending to be human.
Presidents Bush & Chaney want to: 1)change "We the people.." to "We the Right..." 2)eliminate the middle class 3)eliminate the separation of church & state 4)make it legal to spy on Americans 5)have the right to silence any and all critics 6)remain in power even after the next elections.
In 2 years we may just see Bush standing in front of the microphones saying "Mission accomplished". God help us all.
Keith -- time for the most impassioned Special Comment of your career!!

Also, time for all of us to read the book "It Can't Happen Here" by Sinclair Lewis

Those of us living in Texas knew that W could not run the country...that someone had to be doing it behind the scenes as he didn't run Texas as governor.
Houstonian, Texas - Indeed a "Special Comment" would be nice; and yeah, those of you who lived in Texas when he was governor must really despise the moron!!

PEACE!!
If any of you really want to stand up to this administration, JUST STOP SHOPPING.  Wait for that new car or new television or ...   Shrub is always telling us to go shopping because his base is big business and the more you shop, the more they can give to the republicant party.

Of course you need food and basics.  Everything else put on hold until our troops come home.  This is the only way we can really get their attention.

Join me, e-mail your friends.  The only power we have is non-violence.

Put your pocketbook where your mouth is, STOP SHOPPING UNTIL THE TROOPS COME HOME.
Hey Scott, I've already offered up before, and I can say that I'm glad that you're willing to let us all know that you like to argue for the sake of aruging.  However, you did accuse me, though not posting to me directly, that I had aligned myself with terrorists, hence me calling you a moron.  Yes a moron, because as far I am/was concerned, to be put in the same light as a terrorist for the mere fact that I don't support the war or the policies of the current president, anybody that would come to the conjecture that I was somehow in with the terrorists, is a moron.

Also, you accused me of being a fraud because again, you  or won't accept the fact of me being a veteran, Navy wife, and sister of soldiers that have deployed and are deployed to Iraq, AND, being against the president, his policies and the war.

So Scott, as I posted to you the other day: Please come on here with something to add without the insults, and I know that I for one, won't feel the need push back and call you a moron or anything else for the matter.  Either accept what I tell you is true about MY life and why I feel the way I do, or leave the accusations and insults directed at me to yourself.

PEACE!
The 2000 election was stolen. In 2004 Bush and Co, shockingly, got re-elected by playing on people's fear, twisting the facts and outright lying. The Democrats are totally ineffectual, the Republicans are evil, come 2008 Guilliani might get elected. That is the scariest of all. It's time and past that the American people make a change that will restore America's honor in the eyes of the world. The question is, can the Republicans be trusted to run an honest election?
Isn't it funny: when I said these same things 6 years ago, everybody called me a traitor or enemy competent. Everybody was lets go and attack him or her, never mind that they had nothing to do with 9/11.  Nobody believed me when I said that given Bush all this power would backfire. I guess they didn’t learn from the past.  Now that we made a mess over there, people go well is there responsibility to clean up there own country.  First of what happen to “ you break it, you own it, you fix it? “ they didn’t ask for us to invade there country, but does that really matter any more? Well are people that naïve that they believed Chenney when he told them “ we will be greeted with flowers”?. Think about it: would we greet Iran, North Korea or any other country with flowers if they invade our country? Of course not, but we so full of ourselves that we believe that they would? Are this people for real?
PA I'm sorry but recent history shows that Republicans cannot be trusted to run an honest election. They stole Ohio in 2004 PA. it just wasn't reported in the mainstream media like Florida. Massive voter intimidation in Cuyahoga County. Actual convictions of the Republican election officials there. Greg Palast has e-mails from Karl Rove and other flunkies of his deatiling how the R's stole Ohio in 2004.
Help, New Mexico - Many of us, including me, argued the same and was called the same!! God Bless!!

PEACE!!
Buzz 11:31 AM - It's not paranoia if the bad guys really are after us.  And they are!

Gigi:  The stop shopping argument isn't going to work.  The reason:  they simply don't care.  Lookie lookie at what's happening in the retail world already that they are not paying attention to.  High end retailers for rich people are raking in the big bucks.  Low end retailers (Wal-Mart - where I NEVER shop, Target, and K-Mart have been posting loss after loss) are taking a big hit.  When poor and middle class people can't afford to shop, they still don't care.  My only hope is that Wal-Mart won't have all those extra bucks from using slave labor in China to give to their Repugnikant lackeys.

The circus is in town again.  The clowns need to be ignored or laughed at.
Ready to Hurt a Fascist, New Orelans, LA (Sent Monday, June 25, 2007 2:37 PM)  Get bent??  Maybe you can help me through the physics here Todd maybe show me how Information Theory as it relates to physics equates past Christian fanaticism and current Islamic fanaticism?  Maybe it could be used to predict future events, I mean that would be real cool man, if you can show in precise mathematical detail that past Christian crimes led directly to 9/11 and current Islamic radicalism you might be able to forecast how the future will play out? The math should be quite interesting.  Thank you in advance for your instruction.                                                                                              C. A.  If you have noticed I have been civil to you, that is because you have been civil with me.  The rest of these donky donks don't know anything other than Ad Hominem
Hey 'Help' in NM:  Trust me, you weren't the only one.  Since I was 19 years old my whole life has pretty much centered in and around the US Military.  The majority of the people I've met in the military were die hard Republicans (notice I said 'were'), and I can assure you since I've been in the Navy or married to someone in the Navy, I've been accused, insulted, lauged at, etc., for my political beliefs-I'm NOT a Republican, neither old or new Republican for that matter.

I was told by I don't know how many people that truly believed that liar Bush, and took him for his word-like it meant anything-about going into Iraq.  I've been called unpatriotic-which is laughable considering the people calling me that had never even had the cajones to walk by an Armed Forces recruitng office, let alone sign up.  I too have been called a traitor.

Now, only now, do people see the errors of their ways.  Those 'die hard' people are disillusioned, frustrated, disgusted, etc., with the entire Bush administration.  Although I'd love to say 'I told you so,' it would do me no good.  They know that I know, and a million I told you so's won't bring back those dead American heroes!

PEACE!

Scott, Hitler was a product of a Christian background. The orders to drop the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were given by Christians too, so are the people who ordered the invasion of Iraq thereby taking many innocent lives. Nobody blames Christianity for their actions. Take a good look in the mirror before pointing your finger at Muslims.
Oh Scott, do you mean Ad Hominem as in accusing someone of 'aligning themselves with terrorists', or calling someone a 'fraud' and taking a page out of the 'progessive manifesto?'

See Scott, that is what that is.  You can't discuss or debate back with some of us with REAL facts, so you attack and question our credibility because it doesn't go with what you want.  THAT would be Ad Hominem!

To take a line from the so-so movie, A Few Good Men:

'YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!'

PEACE!
Has anyone noticed that Cheney looks like Mr. Burns from the Simpsons?
We have the best government money can buy. Just ask Exxon and Haliburton/KVR. The Constitution says "We the people" Not "We the Shareholders". Rome is burning and Dick and G Dubya's portfolios are going to be nice and fat for their retirement years. I hope the next elections will put into power some people who will do somthing.
Worst people to have in the worst place at the worst time.
Just goes to show what horrendous things happen when men literally think with a DICK.
You can't fix stupid....
