Dick's Move

Posted: Wednesday, June 27, 2007 10:53 AM by Countdown

Some of what we're working on for tonight...

Yet another page out of the Cheney playbook: When attacked, keep changing your story. The Vice President’s chief of staff, David Addington, has defended his interpretation of the Veep’s office not having to comply with the executive order, by – this time – saying it’s because Cheney’s office isn’t an “agency.” The new twist on the legal argument came in a letter to Senator John Kerry
that has been released to Raw Story.

“"Dear Senator Kerry,
" Addington writes, "The executive order on classified national security information -- Executive Order 12958 as amended in 2003 -- makes clear that the Vice President is treated like the President and distinguishes the two of them from 'agencies.' The executive order gives the ISOO, under the supervision of the Archivist of the United States, responsibility to oversee certain activities of "agencies," but not of the Vice President or the President.”

Of course, that isn't true either. The amended order, as the folks at TPM Muckraker pointed out yesterday, doesn't just deal with "agencies," it also deals with Executive Branch "entities."

In addition, there are new details in the final installment of the Washington Post’s investigative series about Mr. Cheney. It is alarming the level of secrecy that has enveloped the Veep’s death grip on the nation’s environmental and energy laws – and yes, the two are linked. Christie Todd Whitman, the Post reports, forced out as EPA administrator because Mr. Cheney wanted to ease pollution rules for aging power and oil refinery plants. The Post also focuses on how Mr. Cheney was responsible for the largest fish kill the West has ever seen, all in the hope the Bush/Cheney ticket might be able to eke out a few more votes in Oregon in 2004. (John Kerry still won that state, 51%-47%)

"the PVP Bobble Heads Doll" The P-Head is of course that of Dubya, and is hardwired to a random cycle word bank, assuring a plethora of undecipherable malapropisms while the realistic head sproings around spasmodically.  The VP head of Cheney, located behind and slightly to the right of the P head, is wired to a secret computer bank that issues barely audible mutterings. Fastened to a stiffer wire than the P-head, it is capable of disappearing into the body, adding to the realism of this amazing doll.  You'll be amazed at the detail involved on these heads.  The President's perpetual down-turned mouth corners and squinty-beady eyes are so finely captured, you can almost hear him think "Nu-Cu-Lar" as God speaks it to him.  And the three tiny 6's on the VP's scalp, well, details like that are worth your very soul to own, right? If you have to crawl to the Capitol, naked through broken glass to get one of these incredible Sacred American Treasures, please do it Now! Remember Sinners, the End is Near!
Just when are these criminals going to jail for the damage they have done to our country?
Hail Dick,Hail Dick, Hail to the All Powerful Cheney,Ah H--l to him and his Kingdom. May he live to an ancient age and read the Legacy he has sought to create. An overbearing zealot of secrecy and manipulation of government.
[Photo Caption] "God sends down a Halo to emphasize the Sanctity of Dick."
We've all grown up reading and hearing stories about fascism and communism in other parts of the world. Um, are we in the middle of a wanna be dictatorship? Sure appears that way. Rep. Rahm Emanuel, show 'em we aren't please. Perhaps you may want to refresh their memory on why we had a cold war; on why we had to fight WWII, on why our Founding Fathers felt it necessary to have a Revolutionary War. Bring up the word democracy now and then. Explain to them what it means. Bring up the Constitution. With the Fourth of July fast approaching, maybe you could suggest to them that they go on a Globus Bus Tour of major battles fought in the Revolutionary War. Heck, President John Adams' house is only a mile from my house. I could take them there myself! It's quite spectacular to visit. This Administration is in  dire need of an American history education.  Boston is full of sites to visit during our INDEPENDENCE Holiday. I'm available to give 'em a refresher course. $10 per person. What a deal.
More BIG surprises relating to Cheney's cicumvention of laws, regulations, policies, etc.  What else does he have to do before someone, ANYONE, does something to stop him?  He is out of his friggin' mind!!  Do our elected officials not understand that he is crazy and will never stop?

If the Democratic leadership does not stand up now, for this country, AND DO WHAT IS RIGHT, than they will never be relevant again.  If they do not fully and unconditionally go after Cheney for the FACTUAL information that is being released than I say to hell with them all.
Nice halo on Cheney. Who says there isn't a God -- he just isn't a nice God.
"Agency" means any "Executive agency," as defined in 5 U.S.C. 105; any "Military department" as defined in 5 U.S.C. 102; and any other entity within the executive branch that comes into the possession of classified information."

Well this certainly debunks the latest "argument" by Cheney and his staff, in addition to George W. Bush, via his support of Cheney's absurd self-analogy of being exempt from compliance with executive order. According to Cheney's latest criminal logic, his office now isn’t an “agency" either.

Sealing the fate of this absurd argument is indeed the fact that George W. Bush himself amended the executive order in 2003.  As the article states, Bush did not use the word “exempt” in his executive order, and stating the order does indeed contain “implicit exemption” is just one more arrogant attempt at keeping any and all information from not only ISOO, but “we the people”.

With each and every illegal and immoral act this man has committed, I don't think the following is a “cheap shot” at all.  It’s more than accurate!! "At the risk of a cheap shot, Saddam Hussein gave about as much access to UNMOVIC weapons inspectors in 2002 than Bush aides gave to the ISOO."

Congress, please, get off your collective “sit in silence” asses and rid us of this iniquitous lawbreaker!!

The DICK.....blinked......HA!

thank you, Rohm
Vice President is not eagal to the president, what the heck is wrong with him? Does he whant to rewright the constitution here? Nobody voted him in as president so how can he be egal to bush?
I am so confused, did he miss social studies in college? or did he do what Bush did pay to pass his classes?
First of all, to the WONDERFUL reporters from the WASHINGTON POST who were responsible for these articles about VP Cheney, BRAVO! GREAT WORK! NICELY DONE! YOU ROCK! But, it's probably not so good for my digestive system to have to fight the urge to throw up so many times in the last few days - too graphic? sorry...

Anyway, on to my comments about part 4...the main lesson I got out of this is that VP Cheney's environmental "policies" have everything to do with making sure he can still enjoy his "He-Man" hobbies of hunting and fishing and protecting interests (business and otherwise) of his "home state" of Wyoming and the west in general. Am I close? Having been to Yellowstone National Park more than a few times, there's plenty to do outdoor-wise there other than snowmobiling in the freakin' middle of winter. It gets d**n cold, and why disturb the animals anyway?!

My thoughts about the situation with the Klamath River are a bit more complicated. In the spirit of full disclosure, I am a "farmer's daughter." My dad and my uncle farmed corn and soybeans on between 800-1000 acres that's been in my dad's family for years and years and YEARS. My father has recently retired, and the land is still being farmed on a rental basis by family friends. My dad and uncle, while farming a lot of acres, were not exactly an "industry" and always took care that their actions would not adversly affect the environment. They were careful with what few chemicals they used, practiced methods to decrease soil erosion, etc. Farming was my family's livlihood, so the choice between the fish and the water access would have been tough, to put it mildly, if my family had been faced with that issue. I have no idea if the affected farmers in Oregon were like my dad, or if they were ranchers, or if they perhaps had much bigger more organized operations that what I saw growing up. If you wonderful educational bloggers out there know more about the "farming nature" of that part of the country, please enlighten me! After saying all this, there is absolutely no doubt that VP Cheney put the his own interests and the interests of his "cronies" above all else. What a freakin' shock!

I can't wait to see what you all have to say!
I wonder if Bush even knows how much of his power that "The Usurper" has taken from him.  Is Bush in a haze of psychotropic medication?  Fallen off the wagon?  Condi missing in action, too.

*Sigh* where is Bush Sr. when you need him?
Keith:  If you're listening:

Thanks for asking Rahm Emmanuel about the Post story where there is speculation that his heart surgery will be used as excuse to get Cheney out of the way to appoint a new Veeper who can run for president.  Although snickered at by Emmanuel, I'll wait and see.  Sounds like Rovian strategy and with the crap hitting the fan about how the government has been Cheney-ized and his continued unpopularity - it deserves to have a least one set of eyeballs on it.

Second, it was nice to have that person laughing in the background during Oddball.  I have missed that rather hoarse laugh for several months.  Who does that laugh belong to?  I know it ain't "ha" Matthews.
BREAKING NEWS: "White House, Cheney's office subpoenaed for papers in wiretapping probe"

WOW!! Let's home Congress cancels its recess and "stays the course" in bringing down this Administration!!

I can't wait to get more details!! My fellow DEMOCRATS, DO NOT FAIL ME AGAIN!!
This is GREAT news indeed!! I hope they all rot in a prison cell for the remainder of their sub-human lives!!

"WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee subpoenaed the White House and Vice President Dick Cheney's office Wednesday for documents relating to President Bush's warrant-free eavesdropping program.

Also named in subpoenas signed by committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., were the Justice Department and the National Security Council."

If the plan to replace Cheney with someone who can run for president is true, then these idiots are truly dumber than I gave them credit for.  Do you REALLY believe someone affiliated with this administration would have a chance in '08?  The guilt by association would be massive!
This White House makes Nixon look like a saint. It's too bad that congress doesn't have the guts to do the right thing which is to impeach the bastards, and throw the whole f'n works in jail. Mind you when they're saddle with dim bulbs like "No-Brains" Imhoff, I can see where there might be a problem.
BREAKING NEWS: Cheney’s office, White House subpoenaed
Senate committee probing legality of Bush’s eavesdropping program

"We're aware of the committee's action and will respond appropriately," White House spokesman Tony Fratto said. "It's unfortunate that congressional Democrats continue to choose the route of confrontation."

Well Tony, if the Dick and his Bush were to act appropriately in the first place, then the congressional Democrats wouldn't find it necessary to 'confront' the President, er, VP like this.

Quit the hiding, the lying, the cheating, and own up to what you people have done.  It's our America too, not just the GOP's!

C.R. - It's not a job any serious contender would take, but don't you think it's great for someone with a reputation as a lazy politician who would rather act the part then move on, like say, Fred Thompson?  I've heard his name mentioned.  He has no real chance of winning as Pres and this is right up his alley, playing the part of President Light.  He'd have enough of a taste of the life to say he's been there and done that and then run as fast as he can back to Hollywood.  Just like he did in the Senate.  If you think "I was a Senator" plays well at the Club or insider party, try on "I was Vice President" and watch the oh so pretty models/aspiring actresses from Reseda stepping on each others backs to get to you.  Just a thought.
Dear Countdown Bloggers, I am hoping to organize an American peace demonstration in "IRAN."  Iran has been the target of this war all along and I am hoping to protest U.S. Imperialism by getting americans to think more about such looming prospects.  Everyone is good at complaining about wars but if you are willing to try and prevent one now would be a really good time!
Chris - Count me in, as I stated earlier. Although, as a woman, I would not be allowed in the country without the written permission of "my husband or father", and they both must be Muslim.  Okay, my ex-husband is, but that won't count.  My father, sadly, passed away and was Catholic.

The Iranian laws are very strict about letting women in and issuing visas.  Perhaps you have some knowledge of how I could enter the country? I WANT to go; however, the Islamic laws in Iran are followed to the letter.  I went to Jordan, also a country with an Islamic government without any problems, no visa needed, just my passport.

Do you have any suggestions?
Chris - (2:21) I'm uncomfortable with the language you are using. Are you talking about a demonstration within the physical boundaries of IRAN?

Also, I really protest your using the phrase "U.S. Imperialism". The phrase I could support would be "this administration's doctrine of imperialism."

Lastly, although I agree completely with avoiding a conflict with Iran, frankly I want to focus on getting the current criminals out of the white house. That would help in your goal. However, any push  that you succeed in making would dilute my goal.

Keep in mind what I think we both agree is the target - improving the US role in world affairs.

Help me better understand what you're after but focus, if you will, on helping understand why the effort you are seeking is best used your way at this point in time than in my way of removing the WH vermin.

There is only so much outrage that the public can handle at any one time. If we start splintering on specific items, we lose what I've already stated in my priority.

thank you.
Todd in NOLA - Judging by Fred's trophy wife, I'd say the "I was a Senator" card was enough.
"It's our America too, not just the GOP's!"

The only way for evil to succeed is for good people to do nothing!
I wonder if Bush even knows how much of his power that "The Usurper" has taken from him.  Is Bush in a haze of psychotropic medication?  Fallen off the wagon?  Condi missing in action, too.

R. Northern California (Sent Wednesday, June 27, 2007 1:00 PM)

In far background doing his own dirty deeds and having talking points on what they should do next.
Don't get your hopes up about the subpoenas, they'll weasel out of it like they've done with everything else. The breaking news will soon become "non-news". It's time and past for the Democrats to grow some spine and get something accomplished. What a disappointment!
Chris: I am all for avoiding wars and going the diplomatic route as well as feigning friednship so that you can stick your enemies in your hip pocket so you know what they are up to, but don't think the Iran Peace demonstration in Iran would work too well. Bush and company have these people so paranoid the Pres. and a small group of radicals who support him would have your ass locked up in jail or held hostage in the US Embassy while others danced in the streets shouting death to America, death to Chris Eldridge. Your thoughts are in the right direction Chris, the timing is not too good.
Chris, I'd be willing, but I'm not sure about where my 'Iran' would be.

I'm in!

PEACE!
Chris - good idea, but I haven't had a passport in 25 years.  Considering the heck of a job this administration has done improving the efficiency of the federal government <snark>, it would probably take them another 25 to issue me a fresh one and by then the picture would be out of date.
I really hope Rahm Emanuel is serious about stopping the funding for the non-executive branch of the VP's office...I hope they actually vote on Thursday...would be interesting to see if Cheney's changes his interpretation of the constitution when his people stop getting paid....

Since Dick is no longer part of the executive branch, he cannot hide from the subpoenas being issued since he doesn't have executive privilege anymore...wanna bet he returns to the executive branch and claim executive privilege...

How can anyone continue to support Dr. Evil and
Mini-me...
The silence from Bush and Gonzales about this whole Cheney episode speaks volumes.  Why isn't Bush directing Cheney to release the informaiton?  Why hasn't Gonzales responded to the Archives inquiry regarding Cheney's stonewalling?

Silly me!!  That's because Bush and Gonzales work for Cheney.  DUH!!!!
Considering the heck of a job this administration has done improving the efficiency of the federal government <snark>, it would probably take them another 25 to issue me a fresh one and by then the picture would be out of date.
Sue, West Allis, Wisconsin (Sent Wednesday, June 27, 2007 4:16 PM)

LOL!! Payback indeed, as my computer now has diet pepsi all over it - thanks for the laugh - and most appropriate analysis!!

The only thing saving us from this Dick is Bushies stupidity. If Bush could have defeated Iraq he, and Dicky boy, would not be under all this scrutiny now. So, sometimes the blackest cloud has a silver lining, this one may be the final crack up of the Neo con cabal. Let's hope so.
One poster wished Dicko a long life, so he would have to wallow in his own sour legacy for long years.  I wish the same for the shrub, let him live, reviled, for many years.
George - I, too, hope Rahm Emanuel is serious.  As I've posted here already, "My fellow democrats, DO NOT FAIL ME AGAIN!!

Thanks George!!
Independent, The one problem I see with only focusing on the current administration is that nine out of ten republican candidates want to attack Iran with Nukes ==> YESTERDAY <== Hillary seems to be no better.  For dems to pull the language that would have expressly prohibited this trigger-happy admin from attacking Iran just says to me that they too are mostly in the pockets of the oil, Israeli, and military lobbies.  Most all of them have no intention of leaving Iraq as that would leave us out of the oil loop.  That is an imperialistic action to invade a sovereign country under such false pretenses for reasons we still do not fully know.  I firmly believe that we were to attack Iran overnight, it could more than easily lead to a global conflict.  Whether it would seem justified to do so or not, no other superpower could permit us to control virtually the entire Middle East at any one time.  What do we do when Russian sends arms to Iran (which they would)?  Do we accuse them of supporting terrorist and attack them too???  Given what Bush admin has already done, that is entirely likely.

And yes… the only way I see to physically break the American delirium and hate towards Iran would be to do the demonstration there… Pelosi tried to do something similar in Syria… to show that these people can be reasoned with and they are not our enemy.  I commend her for that action!

C A, As always thanks for the reply!  I think that is the type of fear that is just plain myth – that they (the Iranians) would “lock us up.”  Hirsh from Newsweek is over there right now and spoke of all the changes.  He said during his entire first day there he only saw two soldiers and one was shopping at the grocery store.  He mentioned that Tehran was not a city full of gorillas waiting to do battle with the great Satin, but a hustling and bustling city just looking to make their way in life.  As always, we are spoon-fed propaganda and labels like terrorists and communists that have no sound basis.  I for one am more afraid of WWIII than of being arrested in Iran.

To be honest, I’m actually quite surprised to see a few people willing to at least think about it if not actually go.  I think it is the hardest thing in the world to see the wrongs of one’s own nation and the dangers it poses, especially when there is so much fear-based politics going around.  I once had a thread on MSNBC’s message boards asking what the people of Germany thought after Hitler invaded the Rhine land and Poland…  did they think everything would be ok if they just let things be??  I think there comes a time when we have to acknowledge the collision course we are on.  The Bush admin is just the tip of the neocon iceberg that isn’t going to just go away after 08 if indeed they do lose which is by no means certain.
it's past time for congress to stop funding all of the executive branch.  from the inept corruption of gonzales'es justice dept. up to the phone that sits on bushes desk, cut off all funds and force them to provide the records demanded by the many investigations this group has force on america. these criminals plan on stalling the congress out and its past time for congress to strike back.  the people are  screeming for it for gods sakes speaker pelosi and sen reid what are you afraid of? stop bush now, without saying that would include cheney as well.
Let's not ever forget that Dick Cheney picked himself to be the VP.  Remember?  He was tasked with finding a suitable candidate and when he looked around he couldn't find any one as devious as himself so,  he chose himself!  Looks like he's the brain,  not Carl Rove.  Or maybe they work in unison,  Bush is so dense maybe he does need two brains.  Either way,  Cheney is a very dangerous, devious man.  No one is going to bring them down.  Here's to 1/20/2009!  Let's all hope that whom ever is the next President he/she has the guts to straighten out and undo all the bad things that have taken place.  Those "signing" statements need to be made public so we,  the people,  can hold someone's feet to the fire to get them reversed,  pronto.
HEHEHE!  Okay, I have to pass along this story and it falls in line (sort of) of the VP losing his house where it is-like that would happen.

So, my husband has his Navy job and his boss happens to live in the Naval Observatory, and does VP Gore.  So we go to a party at the house of my husbands boss, and pull up to the gate of the observatory in our Toyota Camry and the guard asks for our names and checks our ID's.

Well, apparently we're not on the list, which of course disturbs my husband as he pretty much put the list together.  So, these 'guards' have us pull over to the side, take our ID's and have a little 'discussion' amongst themselves.  They come back and let us through with apologies and an explanation.

It seems VP Gore and the 'boss' were having a party at the same time.  Of course I joked that I'd be willing to go to Al and Tippers house-believe or not the guys thought it was funny-the guys being the Secret Service.

Okay, had to share.  I just think about Cheney and his hyprocritical wife sitting out there without a home, and I laugh.

PEACE!
Well, according to so and so Christie, some guy who worked for Cheney for a year, Cheney is definitely part of the 'Legestlative Branch' of the government.  This Christie fellow was and he insisted that Cheney was too.

Of course Christie had the same comeback with 'don't these Democrats have anything else to worry about, like the war on terrorism?'

I think Mr. Christie missed the part where Mr. Cheney was a huge part of the war on terrorism, and not in a good way.  Oh, and everything else that 'Mr.' Cheney has done and has tried to hide.

Yep, true to his neo con core, Mr. Christie also had to try and throw and little fear into the mix.

If you can't stand the heat, throw GWOT at 'em-works every time.

PEACE!
Ya Know what ? I have had it with this dictating, decidership, bushwacked, crazy lunatic,HITLER wanna be freak show in our White House.Everything is done under stealth. They don't have to be responsible for anything. I think they eat babies too!  lol

Seriously someone in charge of something get off your asses and put these criminals in prison before we all end up in concentration camps.I am serious. Does the American people not see history repeating itself, right before your eyes?
How can anyone continue to support Dr. Evil and
Mini-me...

OH MY THAT IS FUNNY! Thanks for the laugh.
Cheney isn't in the executive or legislative branch of the government.  He's one of Satan's most loyal henchmen.
Chris Eldridge, Harrisburg PA (Sent Wednesday, June 27, 2007 9:08 PM)

This is a VERY long post so I have to set up the major point to begin with:  I agree about the urgency of Iran.  I admire your passion for wanting to directly address it in some way. That agreement has nothing to do with my concern over your proposal to hold some sort of demonstration on Irani soil. Got that? You sure? OK? Now sit back, this will take awhile.

Next, I am basing my assumption of your purpose of this proposed event on your last post where you say “the only way I see to physically break the American delirium and hate towards Iran would be to do the demonstration there.” My assumption is that you wish to change the viewpoint of the American public toward Iran. Is that right?  What would this demonstration involve? Speeches? Signs? Music? What do you actually plan to do?  How do you plan to measure success of such an event should you be actually able to carry it out? You will not be able to hold a public forum in Iran. Iranians are not allowed to hold public forums. How would you ensure that your target audience, the American public, sees any of the event or any results following the event. American media is not allowed in Iran. How would you measure success?  It appears to me that you’d want an event to be held near your target audience.  You haven’t thought this through or, if you have, I’ve not yet seen your information.

That being said, I would still completely oppose your plan for an event to show opposition to any American policy, be it ever so evil, if that event is held on foreign soil.

I'm only going to address this in this one post. I will not respond or participate in any further discussion on the blog about any event you would like to take place in Iran. Feel free to email me for private discussions if you’re still speaking to me. (Independent@281.com.) The reason for my decision on this is discussed in item 3 below.

Now. (oh boy). The following points are my opinion. They are not to be considered my stance on your RIGHT to hold such an event. Rather, keep in mind, always, that these points are about my opinion of your DECISION to do so. OK? The wording is strong because my feelings about this are strong.

1) I will not support any movement that uses the phrase "American Imperialism". Changing it to "this administration's policy of imperialism" would help.

2) Although I will fight to the death for the right of such protests to occur if our government threatened them in any way, I will not personally support any anti-American-policy protests held on foreign soil or those who propose them. ---Any protest---

Protest against anything whatever on American soil and I can support it but I will never support Americans protesting our government/country (even if I agree with the protest points) when those protests are held elsewhere. (I was an adamant anti-VN war protestor and I still wanted to string Jane Fonda up for going to North VN. I agreed with all the words used by The Dixie Chicks in their London concert but I soundly condemn them for using those words where they did.

3) This is the most important point. We as a nation can only rouse so much energy. This kind of proposal not only could divert the limited energy we have from the most important issue of running the current criminals out of the white house, this kind of proposal will splinter support. Guaranteed. We need consensus building across the aisle right now. Imagine the backlash if such efforts as you propose actually gets media play. There goes any hope we have of not being labeled as terrorists-supporters. It doesn't matter that the label would be wrong. What matters is that energy spent deflecting it will take away from momentum toward the goal – removing fascists from the executive office. Since these fascists are the reason we are headed toward a conflict with Iran, my goal is in line with yours. However, since your proposal possibly damages movement toward my goal, you are in conflict with me.

An example of diverting energy is, in fact, the discussion on the blog. If we are talking about this proposal, we are not talking about dealing with the here and now issues we need to address.

The root cause of our possibly pending predicament in Iran is the collection of the fascists in the white house.   (I love alliteration.)

I not only strongly disagree with your proposal, I would prefer it not even be discussed on the blog.

4) Pragmatically speaking, if you think you are going to get any progress on this front in the next 6 months then you are hiding a degree of influence that I don't normally associate with run of the mill bloggers. If it will take longer than 6 months, then you hae missed the window, in my opinion. If you can get something of that nature off the ground in that time frame, then, dammit, why haven't you done something about habeus corpus, the entire gitmo thing, the other violations of the constitution before now. You may have some network you can hope to inspire but if you are as powerful as you need to be to get this thing going in any significantly quick time frame, then you should be doing other work than messing around with a little blog like ours.

Think of the energy and work it takes to do something like this. Think how much it would cost. Everyone who gives you even an hour of time, much less money, is not giving that time or money to defeating the fascists.

The other pragmatic issues involve getting a group of people there. Keeping those people safe. Working within that government’s laws and regulations to even be able to go in the first place. Don’t see it happening. We haven’t even talked about the cultural and behavioral minefields that lie in wait for persons not trained in those areas. The mind boggles.

You'll have to make a decision on your own. My position is that I'm not even willing to further talk about it for the reasons I just stated. I won't discuss whether it is a good thing, the right thing, or even an important thing because all such discussions lend this effort an exposure I wish to, frankly, quash.

Good luck on whatever you decide. We have the same wishes for a better and certainly more peaceful relationship with Iran but we have strongly divergent ideas about how best to move in that direction.

Thank you.

here is what is ironic. No matter what Dem wins the White House in 2008, you can bet that the Republicans will be crying from day 1 that the office of the President has become to powerful and they will cite every and any law they can find or make up to try and reduce the Power that Cheney and Bush have created.

Heck, they might dig up ole Starr himself to lead the investigation.

If Bush and Cheney had any credibility left they would appoint a independant council to properly look at this and prove they are innocent. But wait, that would be wrong.
Chris: There is a big difference between Hirsh from Newsweek going over there and several hundred or thousand Americans wanting to demonstrate in the street. I'm not opposed to going to Iran (have been there several times but years ago), but I think this would be a good suggestion for our next President as this is who Iran will be dealing with in the future. The next President needs to visit the shops and colleges and local markets of Iran and the Iranian people with the Pres. of Iran right there beside him or her. Also, I wonder, although those particpating in a peace rally may have their hearts in the right place just how the Iranian people would react. Before the trip someone needs to do what Bush and Cheney and this administration did not do before invading Iraq. A thorough study and evlaution by those who truly understand the Iranians and their culture just how they would respond to a bunch of Americans coming over to participate in a peace rally. I don't know. They might think we were nuts. We might in some way be violating a particular religious rule or policy. Maybe, maybe not. Anyone here from Iran or with enough knowledge about the Iraninian people and religious beliefs to know how the Iranian people would react to such a thing? Remember the old saying when in Rome do as the Romans do. Do we know enough about the Iranian people, their culture and religious beliefs to do as the Iranians when in Iran.
How much of a Constitution will we have left when this administration finishes wipping their collective a$$e$ with it?
What happened to the oath to uphold and defend?
Chris,

I agree with your premise that the whole notion of the Republican willingness to launch a pre-emptive nuclear attack against Iran has to dragged into the light of day as the despicable idea that it is.  We have seen with Iraq the danger of waiting for common decency and sense to kick in when the neo-cons who push this stuff are using sophisticated marketing strategies to "sell" one war after another.  Nuclear weapons have always in theory been an option, but the "mutually assured destruction" doctrine made it harder for American leaders to initiate these threats.  Everybody knew that nukes were a bad idea. But now that we see ourselves as the only superpower, and now that the neocons see the limits of "shock and awe" and conventional military power, they can't resist ratcheting up the stakes.  If the greatest military machine in the world can't make the Iraqis and others conform to our will--let's try NUKES!

But I agree with Independent that any demonstration on Iranian soil will only conjure up memories of the hostage situation that sunk Jimmy Carter.  We would be better off "marketing" a diplomatic approach to Iran and developing a campaign to make the use of nuclear weapons a major issue in 2008.

Just bringing up the issue here is a start, and for that, great thanks.
Pery you absolute right about that. Bush and Chenney don't have anything left in this country or around the world. Heck now that Blair is gone wou now who going to suport us? Heck can you blame them? if people in our country fell like that? it's to funny Bush just lost the vote for his immigration bill. And he lost it because of his own party. How in the world can he govern this nation?
Current scandal count:

1)  Gonzo $ Co. attempting to strong-arm man in intensive care, AG , over illegal domestic wiretapping.
2)  Gonzo lies in testimony to Congress--or has morphed into a soap opera victim of amnesia.
3) The whole administration lying to the American people in order to generate support for a war with Iraq.
4)  Cheney and Rove outing a cover CIA agent to punish someone who exposes the lies told to generate war with Iraq .
5)  Scooter Libby committing perjury and obstruction of justice to cover up #3 abd #4.
6)  "Rule of law" Republicans and conservatives (along with a few idiot Democrats) argue that someone convicted of perjury and obstruction should not go to jail.
7)  Massive waste and fraud, including billions of dollars unaccounted for, in Iraq
8)  Abu Ghraib.
9)  Extraordinary rendition
10) Breaking the Geneva Conventions;  presidential signing statement keeping torture on the table as an official policy
11)  Detaining people for years without trial.
12)   Official in Justice Dept. invokes the 5th Amendment in regard to her conduct in her official position.
13)  Justice Dept. appoints an admitted vote-cager to US attorney position
14)  Justice Dept. breaks the law by using political criteria in hiring of career positions, particularly the Civil Rights division.
15) Bush administration brief executive branch administrators in how to use their power to help Republican candidates.
16) VP shoots fellow hunter in the face and avoids investigation of the accident
17) VP declares himself outside of Executive branch.
18)  No-bid contracts for the VP's former corporation, resulting in war profiteering and fraud while VP gets richer and richer.

Have we reached a tipping point yet? Will someone need to have oral sex in the White House before the other 24%  and FAUX Noise get a clue?  Which scandal will eventually trigger the mass exodus of rats from this sinking ship?

Fabulous - great list! I'm copying it now so that I don't have to keep writing from scratch each time I'm asked why I am so angry!

Thanks,
