Countdown Friday, Stop the War: 2

Posted: Friday, June 29, 2007 8:08 PM by Countdown
Filed Under:

Stopping the War:  When it comes to putting pressure on the White House to end the war in Iraq... Democrats in Congress would seem to have no problem with the first step: introducing measures that would bring the troops home.  The hard part comes in actually having the spine to pass the legislation once President Bush starts threatening to veto it, and generally bad-mouth the opposition when he does so.  Our fifth story on the Countdown: Stopping the war, take two...

Picadilly Bomb ScareThe London bomb scare.  The intent was clearly the real thing.  But what these people put together and left parked, and, authorities say, twice failed to "go off"...Did it even constitute a bomb or would it have been at worst, a car fire?  The former State Department deputy head of counter-terrorism has his doubts...

ODDBALL:  The internets have had their way with that freaked out hamster, and elephants are cleaning up.

Mad Murdoch 2In 1976, Rupert Murdoch bought from its family ownership, what had been, for thirty years, the country's strongest, self-proclaimed liberal newspaper -- and promised not to change it.  It was The New York Post. It could now no longer be described, either as "liberal," or even as a "newspaper."  Our third story on the Countdown -- thirty one years later, Murdoch wants the Wall Street Journal, and is negotiating with it's family owners on editorial control.

I I, captain:   It's come to this.  The guy at the head of the line in New York City, waiting to buy his I-Phone at exactly 6 PM prevailing local time tonight, was an inveterate compulsive publicity hound, Greg Packer, known as New York's Official Man On The Street Interviewee.  But in Philadelphia, the third guy on the line there, had a little better resume.  Mayor John Street.

WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD:  Who else would take Friday honors, but our very own eye patch wearing conservative bomb thrower...enjoy.

Pets and the GOP:  No matter how grand its ambitions, politics often has the feel of a dog and pony show...So it's a good idea to be **kind** to the animals.  In our number one story on the Countdown... a disturbing trend: Good Ol' Pets -- and other animals -- mistreated by the Grand Old Party.  Most prominently, the case of presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney...

I want to begin by stating that I am against the War in Iraq.  I believed Colin Powell when he went before the UN and claimed Saddam had WMD’s, like congress and a good percentage of the American people, but we eventually found out we had been conned.  What is so outrageous about the breech in trust that Bush and Cheney committed upon this country and the world is that he made a decision that administrations for decades to come will have to deal with the mess he has created.

The reason that the troops cannot be withdrawn with the ease that many antiwar advocates would like to see is that the problem is not that simple.  The invasion destroyed much of Iraq’s infrastructure, internal security mechanisms, and a neutralizing force to balance out the influence of Iran in the region.  If we were to immediately pull our troops out people would starve, there would be mass ethnic cleansing, a refugee problem for neighboring countries, and a government that would likely end up with close ties to Iran.

All of this would provide yet another black eye for the image of America in the region.  It does not matter that this was the policy of one administration; the people of the region see us all as Americans and would blame America as a whole, not just a few neo-con nuts.

This is why I believe most members of congress are afraid to pull the trigger on cutting funding for the war. The republican suggestion that cutting war funding undermines the troops is only the tip of the iceberg.  The long view of what will happen in the Middle East if we totally abandon a troop presence in a destabilized Iraq must also be a factor in their decisions.
Dont worry folks bath tub boy will be back soon with his "expert" telling us that the Glasgow attack wasn't a terrorist attack but a totally random car accident.
Radio Free Europe's website is running a story with the following headline:

Russia: Expert Says Bush Doesn't Want Legacy Of 'Losing' Russia

Why not?  He already has a legacy of starting a war for his personal profit-revenge-religious delusions, putting a moral degenerate and incompetent yes man in charge of the DOJ, appointing John Bolton to ANYTHING after his involvement in Iran-Contra, violating the Constitution repeatedly, destroying American credibility abroad, stretching our military to the breaking point, using mercenaries to hide the true death toll and bypass the laws governing military action, killing thousands of our troops based on fraud and greed, numerous criminal violations and treason.  What difference would Russia make?  Oh, yeah, that's right.  He started pissing them off after forgetting they DO have enough nukes to make the U.S. disappear.  Stupid monkey.  His legacy is already doomed.  So is Dick's, Harry's, Nancy's, Mitch's and the rest of the  enablers in Congress.  Enjoy the coming storm.  You are brining it upon yourselves.
Hi, Clyde Small in Bainbridge Island, WA, I recently finished reading that book, as well, and agree that it should be required reading not just for journalists but for EVERYONE who cares about their country and what the people they "elect" are capable of when in power. I even photocopied Murrow's words from the McCarthy SEE IT NOW program and his speech at the television convention as a reminder of what the American people, who are the EMPLOYERS of those who work in DC, are capable of.
Did anyone besides me notice that BushCo was on vacation (again) and continued on his bike ride after being informed about what was going on in the UK?  Maybe he wasn't done having "My Pet Goat" read to him while he rode.
No matter who was responsible for these attacks in Britain, the "We are fighting them there so we don't have to fight them here" talking point just doesn't hold water, whether it is Britain or here.  Britain is fighting them "there" so surely that would mean that Britain shouldn't have to worry about being attacked - correct?

It's like Bush and all his completely clueless followers (some I see here quite often), believe that all of the people that want to attack us are in Iraq.  If memory serves me, most all of the 9/11 terrorists were from Saudi Arabia.  We have not been able to keep terrorists from flowing back and forth across the borders in Iraq so if they want to come here, they have plenty of opportunity to do so,(airport security is too busy stopping women with little children carrying sippy cups of water.)  If anyone believes that we won't be attacked again just because we are "over there" (ummm... President Bush...Fox News... ,etc., etc.,) you also have to believe Paris Hilton is a member of Mensa.

It makes much more sense to me to have our troops OVER HERE to protect us if/when the terrorists come OVER HERE rather than having our troops OVER THERE.
If they had arrested the 9/11 hijackers you would have laughed out loud about the idea that a couple of religious guys with box cutters were any kind of a threat. Had a bunch of teenie bopper dope heads not been allowed into Sharon Tate's party then the idea that they would have committed mass murder would have been absurd. After all, they just hung out getting stoned with some little five foot three guy that wrote some lyrics for the Beach Boys, what kind of threat could they be?   Anything that fails looks foolish afterwards.
I agree with Larry Johnson's assertion that terrorism, on its own, is not the biggest threat to the US--or to the world.  Nuclear proliferation, and the possibility that nuclear weapons already in existence could be obtained by rogue governments and terrorists, is a far larger danger to human survival.  And with our own government, including the current crop of Republican contenders for the presidency, seemingly willing to use nuclear weapons pre-emptively against Iran, we must acknowledge that we live in a new era in which the old prescritions against nuclear destruction (the "mutually assured destruction" concept) no longer protect anyone against full-out nuclear war.

9/11 was a horrendous event, with thousands of casualties;  nuclear war could end human existence.  Johnson is merely pointing out that legitimate concerns about terrorism should not be overblown, lest we fail to see even worse danger in front of us.

I would also point out that the opinions of guests on Countdown are not required to reflect the views of the host or of the network.  Nor do they simply serve as a handy "straw man" for others to knock down. Keith Olbermann is not Billo, and Countdown viewers are not  looking for a show that accepts, without question, the over-simplified view of the world purveyed by the Bush administration and its apologists and supporters.

For those of you following the Cheney "I am my own branch of government" story,  see Frank Rich's column today in the NY Times.  If you don't subscribe to the Times, here is a link to the Truthout posting:  www.truthout.org.
Independent,

While I'm not speaking for Krista, I hope you give yourself credit for caring about the civility of the blog.  You have always struck me as a thoroughly decent person who is respectful of and interested in what others have to say.  If, under the pressure of the moment, you were less than your best self, remember that it is the human condition to make such mistakes;  how you handle them is what tells the world about your character. As an observer, I think you pass with flying colors.  I only wish one person in the Bush administration would say "I'm sorry" to those
they have harmed (in Katrina, the war in Iraq, and in trashing our Constitution).

Hope to see you back, sharing your thoughts about the extraordinary times in which we are living.
Inde!  Baby!  Yer Back!   You've performed a Texas Version of what some Tibetans call 'Mindrolling', and come out the other side, cleansed. See how stuff like blogs can clean out your mental pipes by allowing you to see them get clogged, freak on that fact, pour a teaspoon of Brain-O into your third-eye socket, and save yourself, in this case, about thirty-five hundred bucks in Psychiatrist Bills or thirty-eight hundred bucks in Scientology Bills, by Do-It-Yourself Attitude Adjusment?  Remember now, this might have to be redone periodically, its like puppy-training. (Did you try the Blue Agave Tequila like I said to?)
Lori.  Boy, do I miss Mike Royko.
Nice to see you back Independent.

Pam:  I wish they would have sent him a "worse" (for him) Iraq funding bill and kept raising the ante until President Moron would decide to sign one before the next worser one came his way.

But...... the closer the next election comes, the more Repugnikants will be jumping ship to try to save their hides from the rational 70% of us that want the U.S. out right now.  Keep track of all those Senators that have reigned supreme, insulting democrats as they went, who face re-election in 08.  The chickenhawks are coming home to roost (retire, get kicked out, get handed their hats, get shown the door .... you know what I mean).
LA, Seattle - God Bless You!!
Hi ...Tru M., Cleveland, Ohio (Sent Sunday, July 01, 2007 9:58 AM)
I don't know who that jerk is that uses that "olby" term
He is probably one of Roves pals who came for the sleep over with Fredo that takes turns being in the barrel with him.You know the old skin head bangers ball.
An off chute of the old KKK known for hating everything including themselves.
I worked with a shit like this in the south years ago that was a card carrying member of the KKK.It was at steel company in the South.

This guy coming in here stirring shit is probably a Rove plant.Rove is known for shit like.Maybe its the same guys who destroyed those hard drives and emails.
Yep sounds like a couple of Roves little bitches to maybe even the "turd" himself.Who knows who cares.

One more thing when your waiting for the updates folks
it's easy. They do them in code in invisible ink.I thought all of you knew that.Yea they use either the old lemon juice ink or the stuff a black light works on.If it's the lemon juice just warm your screen with a blow dryer and the update will appear.

The other you may have to go to an old head shop or maybe the hardware store and pick up the "black light." It's the whole update world you have been missing. Sorry I didn't bring it up sooner. Some great stuff.
Hi, Linda in Pittsburgh, I'm so sorry, but did I miss something? I was kind of out of commission most of yesterday with a killer "make-me-nauseous-can't-stand-a-whole-lotta-bright-light" migraine. I know there's been some discussions about postings, possible hurt feelings, etc. But, I have never felt "attacked" on this blog, and I hope no one here feels like they've been "attacked" by me. The United States is still a semi-free country, so no opinions should be stiffled. The First Amendment still gives people the right to be an a-- if they wanna be.
Hooray, Independent's back!
To set the record straight on the comparison between the London car bombs and the Sharon Tate murders, Tate and her friends, the occuptants of Tate's house and gate house were killed in what we would today call a "home invasion."  There was no "party" to crash.  The first people killed were the young man occupying the gate house and his 18 year-old friend.  Then the killers entered the main house and killed Tate and her house guests. Prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi's famous book "Helter Skelter" provides the definitive account of the murders.

And given that airline passengers have been screened for weapons--including any type of cutting tools--for many years and that intelligence experts had warned about Al Qaeda crashing planes into buildings,  a dozen people on the same day, flying in groups on transcontinental flights,  getting caught with box cutters or some other type of weapon would not "look foolish." The London bombs are better seen in the context of Iraq, where those producing them are unfortunately successful at exploding car bombs and killing people. Both 9/11 and the London story also suggests that the best weapons against both skillful and inept terror attacks involve gathering intelligence and vigilance.

To the extent that government officials exaggerate attempts at producing terror, they are simply finishing the job that the terrorists (whether success or not) have attempted to do: instill terror in people in order to make them abandon democratic principles.
Keith, as usual, you're a half-wit(as are your ratings outside of Cindy Sheehan's house).  Tell you what buddy, next time we find a "car fire" with a possible device in it, let's send you out to disarm it, since it's obviously a prop planted by Cheney and Haliburton.  Aluminum foil hat, conspricy nutjob poses as journalist. You're a pathetic loser.
BA holy crap.... good letting of steam comment!!!
John LaPorte, you were exactly what I was speaking about in another blog.. LOL Thanks for proving my point!
Whats becoming of this site? Only those who love Keith and agree 100% with him and his views should be allowed to post here. Only Bush hating Democrats need be heard here. I for one can not stand to be around those with which I disagree, I makes me nervous and uneasy. Please flush all of the negative comments. Cant we have just one site on the net where the evil neocons cant post? Cant we have just one national news outlet that gives a liberal slant on the news, just the way we like it? I sure hope so, thanks Keith.
Krista,

Yow.  Sorry about the migraine.  What an awful way to spend a summer weekend. Hope you feel better.

See Independent's Saturday 2:21 post, addressed to you.  I was responding to that.
Sorry Ron, that's not how it works.  FOX-hounds get to post here, too, and use it for a litter box.  Be comforted by the fact that a lot of what goes up here, would not be posted over there, but it would get co-opted, analyzed (heavy on the anal), and spit out as original.  I've noticed they have used some of my stuff...FOR FREE...the Cheap Farts.

Sue.  I think the Chickenhawks are worried about coming home to "Roast".
LA:  I sent did send an email to the president along the lines of what you posted above.  Of course I'm sure it was never read.  I only received the automated reply about about receiving many emails, yada, yada!

I don't even know if a paper letter would actually be read-doubtful.  It's sad, because if even someone were to read it, they'd probably just 86 it because they dont' have worry about Iraq or having someone there.

PEACE!
Ron Whittle:  This is an public blog that is open to everyone.  I personally don't like some of the 'ideals' that some people on here believe in, but hey, we still have Freedom of Speech!

I guess you can take this anyway you want, however, you wanting people on here that only agree with you, really makes you no different or better than the George Bush and his way of thinking-not really fair, is it?

PEACE!
Sue - LOL!! President Moron is a most fitting!! I agree, but I like Dennis Kucinich's recommendation that NO funding be sent to the idiot in the White House; however a worse one would also get my stamp of approval, and I indeed would love to see him turn blue in the face while acting like a two-year-old then lose the battle once and for all and bring our troops home!!

PEACE!!
Hey, Linda, thanks for your concern, but unless my brain reading comprehension gas tank is critically low (or I read the wrong post), I don't see any reference to me. I stand by what I said above. I enjoy reading what EVERYONE has to say, whether I agree with it or not.

Slightly along these lines, I finished reading Craig Crawford's ATTACK THE MESSENGER on Saturday. I highly recommend it. He actually suggests reading and/or watching news that you KNOW you're going to disagree with. This activity can do many things, including getting some insight on what "the other side" thinks, testing the strength of your own beliefs, etc. I try - notice I said "try" - to stomach listening to "comedian" Rush Limbaugh for a while at least a couple of times a week. Most of the time, he just ends up making me laugh because he's so *&^%^$n' ridiculous. So, I guess he is a comedian! :)

I'm grateful for everyone here and that I have an opportunity to participate.
Just a couple of points related to a previous thread - postings from 6/29/07 & 6/30/07. Non-Muslims find great pleasure in maligning Prophet Mohammed, citing his marriage to Aishah at the age of 9 and calling him a pedophile. This kind of disrespect is extremely disturbing since we, Muslims, never denigrate Jesus, ever. To us he is one of our greatest prophets including Abraham, Moses, Noah etc. Judaism, Christianity and Islam share the same prophets, is it too much to expect that some respect is shown to our Prophet? But I digress, Prophet Mohammed was married at age 25 to a widow, he remained married to her for 25 years. After her death he married a number of times mainly for political alliances and to give protection to widows. His marriage to Aishah, there are varying reports of her actual age, was proposed by Aisha's father, Abu Bakr, as a means to cement the alliance between Prophet Mohammed and his friend Abu Bakr. Also, Aishah being exceptionally intelligent was also the means to later educate the followers on religious matters and also to remove beyond a shadow of a doubt the prevailing concept about the inferiority of women in society. In the Arab culture prevailing 1428 years ago, marriage for girls at such a young age was the norm not an exception. Sitting in the 21st century it's rather ludicrous to be judging something that we have no experience about. A quick mention about the cartoons, Islam does not allow the physical depiction of any of the Prophets, it would only be a rendition of artists based on pure imagination after all. You have numerous statues/pictures etc of Jesus and you think that's how he actually looked? If Jesus is depicted in cartoons or offensive caricatures, you may be open minded enough not to be offended by them but truthfully, it is extremely offensive to me. Islam is a great religion, if you study it you'll hopefully learn some tolerance but if you cannot please leave it alone. Don't think some fanatics are the representation of what Islam is about. To quote from Sura Kafirun (The unbelievers - 109): Say, oh unbelievers, I worship not that which ye worship; nor worship ye that which I worship; and I shall not worship that which ye worship; nor will you worship that which I worship; unto you your religion, and unto me my religion."
Bring troops home. Syria/Iran take over the oil fields on Iraq. Basher, Mahmoud, Hugo now control half the worlds oil. Your price for a gallon of gas $10.00. You scream, squeal, purge, blame who? US economy is oil based. Must control oil interests through out world to maintain current levels of production, cost and life style. Alternative is........pay price, learn to like it, still hate Bush?
B A.  You sure know the way to a 'girl's' heart, you smooth-talking Lothario.  I bet 'Ann' is crying AND scratching the chalkboard as she rereads that one!  'She's' ready for the taking, if you really want 'her', but remember, 'she' is probably the only Republican 'Woman' in America, with little hearts and 'Wednesday', sewn on 'her' jockstrap. Some kind'a Woman!
Jamie & Steve - Thank you!! Yes, this is an open blog and everyone has the right to post here, indeed it is "Freedom of Speech".  We may not like what they write, but they have EVERY right to write here.

WE, ALSO HAVE THE RIGHT TO IGNORE OR USE THEIR COMMENTS AS A LEARNING TOOL. PEOPLE WHO THINK THIS WAY, SADLY, DO EXIST AND WE CAN BENEFIT FROM THEIR WORDS IN OUR EFFORTS TO RID GEORGE W. BUSH AND BEGIN IMPEACHMENT!!

I become so enraged their posts make me start writing and calling my Congressional Reps. more.

PEACE!!
B. A. Buddusky (Sent Monday, July 02, 2007 12:43 PM)  She was quite entertaining the other day, I find her amusing.  She said something to the effect she is more of a man than any liberal.  You might want to be careful around her.
"Every president in American history has signed a form to provide the public with all information on his time in the military... George W. Bush has not."

Mr. Bush has authorized only the release of his records from Texas National Guard files. And his Military Personnel Records Jacket from Texas is missing many things. There should be pay stubs for every day served, a roll-up of total retirement points earned for service, and, most likely, an Officers' Board of Inquiry Report on why a pilot, who had spent $1 million dollars learning to fly a jet in war time, was suspended. These records, if they exist, have been committed to microfiche and are on file at the Air Reserve Personnel Headquarters in Denver. And, regardless of the president's parsing of language, he has not yet authorized the release to the public of his full service record from Denver.

Since 2000, journalists and researchers have been struggling to make sense of files that contain far less than "everything." In May 2000, Walter Robinson of the Boston Globe reviewed 160 pages of Bush's record, and concluded:

For a full year, there is no record that he showed up for the periodic drills required of part-time guardsmen.

Cheney and the draft
Cheney was of military age and a supporter of the Vietnam War but he did not serve in the war, applying for and receiving five draft deferments. In an interview with George C. Wilson that appeared in the April 5, 1989 issue of The Washington Post, when asked about his deferments the future Defense Secretary said, "I had other priorities in the '60s than military service."[7]

PEACE!
PA, Los Angeles (Sent Monday, July 02, 2007 2:34 PM)  PA in this country we have several freedoms, including freedom of expression and freedom of speech.  Islam apparently has a law against the physical depiction of Mohammed.  Obviously the two laws conflict, which do you think should prevail here in the US?  If someone here violates Islamic law should they be punished, if it does not violate US law?
Jaime,

I know it would be futile to send any kind of letter to the President.  It's quite obvious that no matter how much evidence GW and Dick are presented with about the Clusterf**k this war has become, they show no signs of changing course and bringing our troops home.  I am so tired of hearing from his Stepford wife how much he "cares" about the troops and how much of a "Christian" man he is.  It's all bulls**t.  He is also no man of courage, which he keeps telling everyone that it takes to "stay the course".  My definition of courage is when one stands up and does something for the good of someone else; in this case many.  If he had any courage at all he would be bringing our troops home rather than worrying about how this so-called "defeat" would ruin his legacy.  Arrogance is the opposite of courageous.
Steve - Roast Chickenhawk?  Probably tastes like turds.  You've got me spitting coffee on my screen again lol.  Good thing I got LCD monitor cleaner last week.  I must remember not to drink coffee while reading.

Ron Whittle:  Breaking with my long standing policy of not replying to Kool Aid Drinkers, you do have freedom of speech to write and post whatever you want.  However, we also have the freedom to bypass posts which are designed to provoke, mislead, misrepresent or misinform us.

Freedom is a two way street, my friend.  God Bless America!

PS: Thanks again!!
Bypass posts? That's your term for a one sided commie liberal bias with no debate. I guess "Olby" can't handle the truth or he would have "allowed" my post which exposes the truth.  AKA
B A.  Did 'Ann' just write in using 'her' 'him' name?
Ahem, Mr. Andrews:  Your post may have accidently been put into another thread-it's happened before.

That being said, let me introduce you to Larry, SC; Scott of Henderson, NC; and Wayne of TN.  All are hardly 'commie liberals.'  Um, just read for yourself.

"We will only approve comments that are directly related to the blog, use appropriate language and are not attacking the comments of others."
Apparently this site doesn't follow it's own rules.
Not that I agree with the rules.

"Non-Muslims find great pleasure in maligning Prophet Mohammed, citing his marriage to Aishah at the age of 9 and calling him a pedophile. This kind of disrespect is extremely disturbing since we, Muslims, never denigrate Jesus, ever. "
He Married her at age six and according to the Hadiths she said they had sex at age 9. Whether that was the custom then or not, no modern Western Society would consider it anything less that Pedophilia.
Christ never had sex with a child, or had sex at all as far as anyone knows.

Also some Hindu consider Christ the Empowered Avatar of the Creator.
Christ is revered by many Religions and there are even "Atheist Christian" sects popping up.

If Mohamad had died young before he committed or ordered so many atrocities he would not have had to pray for God's forgiveness the day he died.
Whether you believe that Christ was the Son of God, a Created being, or just a Man, his reputation as a Man is above reproach. The same can not be said truthfully about Mohamad.

Is the following correct?
"Volume 7, Book 62, Number 64: Sahih Bukhari [the most venerated and authentic Islamic source]
Narrated 'Aisha: that the Prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old, and then she remained with him for nine years (i.e. till his death).
"

We recognize that there are a number of differing sects in Islam, the News is full of stories of them murdering each other right and left.
Renee, you don't like the rules, you buy GE and change them.  Or go elsewhere.  Your choice.
Scott, Henderson - The law of the land prevails, no one is talking about applying Islamic laws if someone makes derogatory comments about Islam in the US. It boggles my mind that people can be so disrespectful of someone's else's religion, without really understanding it. Freedom of speech does not entail freedom to hurl insults. At least that is what I was taught.
