Special Comment Tonight: Resign

Posted: Tuesday, July 03, 2007 4:56 PM by Countdown

Tonight on Countdown, Keith Olbermann delivers a special comment just for President Bush and Vice President Cheney: 'resign.'

Here's a preview...    ((FULL COMMENT & VIDEO HERE))

--
Our generation's willingness to state "we didn't vote for him, but he's our president, and we hope he does a good job," was tested in the crucible of history, and earlier than most.

And in circumstances more tragic and threatening.

And we did.... that with which history tasked us.

We enveloped our President in 2001.

And those who did not believe he should have been elected -- indeed those who did not believe he had been elected -- willingly lowered their voices and assented to the sacred oath of non-partisanship.

And George W. Bush took our assent, and re-configured it, and honed it, and shaped it to a razor-sharp point...and stabbed this nation in the back with it.

Were there any remaining lingering doubt otherwise, or any remaining lingering hope, it ended yesterday when Mr. Bush commuted the prison sentence of one of his own staffers.

Did so even before the appeals process was complete…

Did so without as much as a courtesy consultation with the Department of Justice…

Did so despite what James Madison -- at the Constitutional Convention -- said about impeaching any president who pardoned or sheltered those who had committed crimes "advised by" that president…

Did so without the slightest concern that even the most detached of citizens must look at the chain of events and wonder:

To what degree was Mr. Libby told: break the law however you wish -- the President will keep you out of prison?

In that moment, Mr. Bush, you broke that fundamental com-pact between yourself and the majority of this nation's citizens -- the ones who did not cast votes for you.

In that moment, Mr. Bush, you ceased to be the President of the United States.

In that moment, Mr. Bush, you became merely the President… of a rabid and irresponsible corner of the Republican Party.

And this is too important a time, Sir, to have a commander-in-chief who puts party over nation.

Looking forward to buying and reading his book.

This is exactly what I am feeling. This is exactly what Mr. Bush has done to this country. He deserves nothing from the people of this country except their contempt and anger. It is time for him to go and now is not soon enough.
I'm on the edge of my seat!  Can't hardly wait to hear it all!  BRAVO KEITH!  Here's to the truth, well spoken by a true American and to 1/20/2009.
Bravo Keith! Thank you for having the courage and strength of character to comment on the way it really is in Washington. Please don't let this Libby issue disappear. Every American should be "up in arms" and appalled by this most recent example of this administration being "above the law". It's truly frightening!
This should be printed out and tacked up on street corners all over the country.  Thanks, Keith.
The mantra for the neo-cons is to have total control of all of government, and to change all the rules to their thinking.  They want permanent control of power.
Then if the Dems try to change 1 thing, they'll attack w/ their usual all-out blitz.

Bushie has shown us how obsolete our rules are.  Checks and balances, Geneva Convention, the UN.  Is there a rule or organization that is not obsolete?

He has made it clear that BUSHIE is the law.  He has the only say after Chaney shapes it for him.
Excellent reporting Keith, you speek the truth that others fail to utter in fear of loosing their own base. I've been discusted with this administration from the start. Didn't vote for him and glad of it. Now i'm getting even more impatient with the Decrate's for saying absolutely nothing about it. Where is the movement to empeach this administration, starting with Vice President only because i wouldn't want him as the President, then go for the one who has taken this country down the tubes.
My husband and I are waiting anxiously for your show tonight.  We are both outraged at this administration and want them to be GONE! Keep your excellent reports in the forefront.  People depend on you for the truth.  Something "Billo" doesn't know anything about!
My God. Somebody finally understands.

As much as I condemn Mr. Bush et al, I truly thought when he was first "selected" that we would be embarrassed by him not that he would be so amazingly horrible.

When the Iraq invasion was first announced I did, indeed, put my partisanship aside. I really did support what I thought at the time to be the best thing for our country.

He LIED to me. He BETRAYED me. He KILLED the men and women who went forth to do his bidding.

He PARDONED the only person who hadn't been lucky enough to wiggle off the hook who KNEW that the LIES had been told.

He did indeed betray me and all of us. There are no words to convey how sad I am. I'm not even angry anymore. I am in deep mourning.

We will never be able to trust anyone in office again. Although we've always been cynical, deep inside there has been trust that those upon whom we bestow our greatest expectations will somehow do the job right. That trust is completely lost.
I love the Republican talking pointed advice to Democrats:

"If you do this, you'll regret it"

So glad they care..now run along we've got work to do. High crimes and high misdemeanors all over the place.

Thanks Keith!
Keith, You have so many commentary in very realistic and gut wrenching manner. Let me ask you how much doest appeal or matter to comman Americans.. When I see or try to talk to them "THEY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THIS" who is "Scooter LIAR" or who is VALERIE PLAME..
It is well and good to make all this talk at national level but when it comes to local level not many many people are aware of all this happeneing. Perfect example is local news coverage. I am from Detroit are and I see very minimuml coverage of this on local media. People are so IGNOREMUS of the happeniong that they simply do'nt care unless it affects their life style or pocket book.
This is about local media should put all this in a proper perspective. Michigan is one of the state which has been ignored by this administration. The amount of money poured in Iraq could have been well spent if invested in reaserch and innovation. But WHO CARES they are too busy to protect people like LIBBY THE GREAT LIAR.

GO, BABY, GO!!!!! I can't wait to hear the rest tonight!

GO GET 'EM!! I am with you a thousand million percent and know that most people who post here are, as well!
When history judges President Bush, it's certain that this seemingly feeble-minded white collar criminal will be recalled as America's savior. Concerned our children will suffer from the crushing load of his multi-trillion dollar debt, Bush is reducing this financial burden by eliminating the three branches of American government. Today, with just Bush, Cheney, and Alberto Gonzales in charge, Congress can be dismissed, the courts dismantled, and millions of federal employees taken off the payroll. Soon, 300 million of us (less the 3,600 dead in Iraq)  will flourish under this simplified, streamlined, three-man "execjudislative" branch. Hey -- if it worked for the Third Reich, why wouldn't it work here?
The President is out to destroy America and the Constituion and American in General.  The mission for him and his Satanist is OIL or (Operation Iraqi Liberation).

Americans need to wake up and see the Neocon plan and keep on listening to FoxNoise if you want the Lie.

http://www.newamericancentury.org.

The plan for you sons and daughters is to never leave the middle-east.

So much for your freedom.  Your officials have been bought and paid for.

In your complaceny, you have given freely your sole to a Satanist that continues to fool you on behalf of the followers of "The Christ and Neocon Nazis" representing Jesus.

Bush is a fake dumbass, and he banks on your children dying to continue his message.

I support the anti-war by bring out troops home, but more and more of you never want this to happen by your vote.

In Christ Jesus,
Richard.

911truth.org.

Less than 2 hours to Countdown.  I can't wait.

Someone please ask the question about whether or not Bush can send out assassination teams and then pardon them.  We are not safe with this man as the President.
Oh you mean he doesn't like bush and wants him to resign? Cheney as well? Putting an unelected DEMOCRAT in office? Nothing partisan there right?
Keith,
Thank you for speaking up for what is right. This administation morally bankrupt and it takes courage to speak out. And thank you for giving people like me a platform to speak my mind.
I am totally coming to work early tomorrow, just to get enough pre-work computer time to catch this...of all the nights to have a brother's birthday party!!!

*rants and raves about inconsiderate siblings*
The 'Scooter' was nothing more than a sacrificial pawn in the Bush game of lies, deceit and political trickery.  Bush, Cheney and this entire 'regime of liars' should 'resign' and then be 'prosecuted' for this farce in Iraq.  Those who support these lying criminals should also shut-up and sign up for IED patrols in a totally bombed out country.  A country where tens of thousands have been killed, maimed and tortured based on the lies of the Bush Regime of LIARS.  These 'lies for an unqualified war' has also displaced well over two-(2) million innocent Iraqis and cost the US taxpayers a half a trillion dollars.
While Bush may deserve to be impeached, effectively 'tying' his hands may be the most likely and effective option.  A groundswell of immense proportions would be necessary to initiate and carry an impeachment forward.  The slim majority of the Democrats only allows them, if united, to subpeona and investsigate this administration into oblivion, or as stated above, to tie Bush's hands permanently.  An impeachment of the president and the vice-president will not happen.  Fight the battles you can win.
Keith:  Yes.  Stevie, SLC Utah shamed me and should shame us all by thanking you for providing this forum.  You provide a valuable community service even if it is spending GE's money.  Thank you, Keith.

Speak truth tonight. Speak LOUD. Make Jefferson proud.  We the People have your back.
GO KEITH!
GO KEITH!
GO KEITH!
Kieth-
Thank you for giving voice to what many of us are not only thinking, but discussing amongst ourselves.  It has become readily apparent to those of us with the courage to see, and the conviction to question what goes on behind the curtain.
Our system is indeed broken.  We are being manipulated, the main stream media is being manipulated, and neither "party" speaks to the problem.  This administration MUST be held accountable for the alternative is reprehensible.

Kieth, have you given any consideration to a third party bid?  I'm sure that you could come up with a better way to spend the billions of dollars that will be spent on this next election cycle.

Please keep up the good work!
Bush, Cheney and this entire regime of LIARS will go down in history as the most corrupt with absolutely NO morales!  The 'true' Christian base should be horrified at all the LIARS that they sent to office.  Libby, Bush and Cheney should be in jail-(GITMO).  Their 'lies for this war in Iraq' is costing this country in blood and money.  Bush, Cheney and this entire regime of liars have sacrificed NOTHING.     This CONGRESS should 'Impeach' and then 'Prosecute' these hideous criminals on the so-called Christian Right.  NOT one-(1) true Christian could ever support a regime of blatant liars for war with profit.  Make NO mistake; Bush,Cheney and this entire regime of garbage are profiting from the innocent blood of Americans and innocent Iraqis.
Bush ought to be worried for the rest of his life some relative of someone he sacrificed in Iraq is stalking him. Thats why he will need a thousand Secret Service Agents till he dies.
Keith,
Your show is the one show on tv that speaks truth to power. Thank you for your courage. It means so much to all of us that are looking for some hope in this nightmare of an adm. Bush and Cheney should both resign for the good of the country, but I'm afraid that will never happen. They are much too corrupt and evil to ever do anything so noble.
Gigi
I can not wait to watch this. I really dont know how Bush and Cheney sleep at night. I really dont.

Keep telling this story Keith...over and over and over again.
Gary, Mt Dora, I have been in your city protesting before the midterm elections!!! Nice to have you here!
With Veterans for Peace and Code Pink!
Keith, your are the best commentator on any major network! This president an vice president must be impeached as a matter of principal for all the many violations: including, but not limited to, the cover-up of outing a CIA agent, illegally spying on American citizens without a warrant, illegally detaining American citizens and others without a right to a trial, intimidating intelligence agencies to put forth false and misleading information; illegal torture, politicizing the justice department with wrongful firings of federal prosecutors, etc.
I am just so choked up I wanna cry.. this is why I have kept my faith in you KEITH and faithfully watch your show. If not the one at 8 the one at midnight. You're our VOICE that goes out to so many. This is something I have been waiting for before this sucker even was put into office by the mostly Republican Supreme Court!!!! HOW THIS ADMINISTRATION WOULD BE! My dread was so overwhelming I have pretty much been nausiated for as soon as I heard this POS person was running for President! I didn't vote for DADDY BUSH, I DIDN'T VOTE FOR JEBBY AND I SURE IN THE HE|| DIDN'T VOTE FOR BUSHY JR. IDIOT!
"...a thousand million percent"??!! Ugh...I know I can write better than that. Chalk the phrasing up to nervousness, excitement, etc. - all good emotions, I assure you! ;)
This is more Cheneyism at work. Mr. Cheney told Mr. Bush to pardon his former Chief of Staff and Bush did his bidding. Perhaps Mr. Cheney feels a twinge of his own guilt over the Plame outing.  The "aloneness" Mr. Bush feels, as reported by the Washington Post, is because he been nothing but Mr. Cheney's lackey since he has been in office.
Keith, I just wanted to wish you good luck--we're all counting on you. Or, to be a bit more highbrow, "Once more unto the breach!" (In this case, the breach of justice!)
I can't believe it -- I actually have more respect for Paris Hilton than the the majority of officials of this administration.  And God bless Cindy Sheehan and the Dixie Chicks -- American patriots.
Oh you mean he doesn't like bush and wants him to resign? Cheney as well? Putting an unelected DEMOCRAT in office? Nothing partisan there right?
Andrew in LA (Sent Tuesday, July 03, 2007 6:12 PM)

Correct me if I am wrong, there would not be an unelected DEMOCRAT made president of the US if Bush/Cheney resigned (at the same time).  Speaker of the House Peolsi is next in line.
Keith, this is also not a time to be polite,  to even attempt to ask anything of these people is folly.  YOU have the national forum--it's time to use it to its fullest extent.  Congress must understand that the time has trully come to impeach this man and pull his masters into the light.  You can use your show to call for nothing less than IMPEACHMENT.
Oh you mean he doesn't like bush and wants him to resign? Cheney as well? Putting an unelected DEMOCRAT in office? Nothing partisan there right?

Andrew in LA (Sent Tuesday, July 03, 2007 6:12 PM)

What?  No goober, we want DUE PROCESS of the law.  The majority of us wanted these creeps impeached long before Nancy Pelosi was the house speaker.  Get it?

This isn't about Democrat or Republican anymore, it is about right and wrong.  This administration has walked on our Constitution-do you get that?  This administration has sent over 3,584 American heroes to their deaths-do you get that?

You are trying to over simplify the whole thing.  Please, don't be a simpleton, there are enough people that support Bush that are.

PEACE!
How did so many corrupt and dishonest people get into the position of power? did we all fall asleep for 20 years and allow the lowest skum  to take control of our world?. I don't believe that man in general is that bad. What kind of ethics are we teaching our children when they see people in powerful positions skirt the law to their favor. I see it not only in politics, but also in sports. It's a sad sad day and I am indeed in mourning for our future.
Thank god for Keith Olbermann.  And, Keith, BTW, don't let your producers "make" you do stories anymore.  All the Paris/Britney/horsecrap stories suck by nature, and even you can't save them - stick to the substance!
P.S.  I received an email from my brother John today.  He says he's already lost 10 lbs in the few short weeks he's been there.

So, if all you Bush cheerleaders would like to lose a few lb's, I suggest you go to your local military recruiting office and go fight the fight.  Of course that might mean you have to actually walk the walk of the principles you say you stand for, but hey,I guess that is asking too much, isn't it?

PEACE!
We have to keep speaking out.  Only through the voices of ordinary American citizens will change be realized.  Keith, I cannot thank you enough for having the courage to step forward.
thank you keith!

you said what i wanted to say and best of all, you said it to the world!
Reuben, your comments about keeping them in office but tying their hands is well-intentioned but unrealistic.  While everyone is up in arms about Libby, the administration is waiting for the Senate to hand over still more power when it returns next week.  From Think Progress (http://thinkprogress.org/2007/07/03/political-appointees-given-new-regulatory-powers/):

"President Bush has signed an executive order that “would require regulators to show that private markets had failed to address a targeted problem before they went after it themselves.” It would also give political appointees in an “obscure White House office” “greater authority over how federal regulations are written.” Next week, the Senate is set to vote on legislation blocking the order, which the House has already passed."

The post includes a link to the WaPo article, "House Balks at Bush Order for New Powers"(http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/07/03/AR2007070301245.html), which includes a link to the Executive Order.  Follow the trail - it leads to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA), which is headed by Susan Dudley, a recess appointee who Bush knew would never be confirmed by the Senate and who consistently puts the interests of Big Business ahead of individuals (sound familiar?).

The EO itself stipulates that no new regulations can be enacted by government agencies unless OIRA determines that the problem has failed to be adequately addressed by private industry.  Whatever expectations you have of the EPA, FDA, FTC, you name it - this executive order ties THEIR hands.

Why wouldn't OIRA approve new regulations?  Some excerpts from http://www.citizen.org/autosafety/regs/dudley/articles.cfm?ID=16689:

"Throughout her career, Dudley has consistently fought against government safeguards and advocated a radical, hands-off approach to regulating corporations.  As director of regulatory studies at the industry-funded Mercatus Center, Dudley has sought to strike down countless environmental, health, and safety safeguards, such as the following:
EPA’s attempts to keep arsenic out of drinking water and lower levels of disease-causing smog,
NHTSA’s life-saving air bag regulations, and
the Department of Transportation’s hours-of-service rules to keep sleep-deprived truck drivers off the roads.

Dudley comes to this powerful office with a radical agenda that would destroy the federal government’s ability to protect the public.    At Mercatus, Dudley has advocated radical policies such as regulatory sunsets, or mandatory expiration dates for all protective standards, which would force agencies to plea for the continuation of critical safeguards. She also supports regulation-stalling techniques that induce “paralysis by analysis,” such as wanting federal agencies to wait to impose rules until near-perfect estimates of the precise causes and effects of the hazards to be regulated are known. Collecting this secondary information can take years, during which the public will continue to be put at risk."

So, as we all continue to express our outrage at the Libby pardon, we must not delude ourselves into thinking that the presidents have done their worst and now we just wait for them to leave office.  They continue to shift what little balance of power remains to themselves at our expense!
Keith Olbermann and Countdown will stand out in our dark history as the sentinel of sanity while the US was ruled by a criminal cartel.
1/20/09 IS NOWHERE NEAR SOON ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kudos Keith:

As one who did not vote for Bush nor Gore nor Kerry, but for Ralph Nader twice, I am not surprized at the last six years and their accompanying horrors.

WE many millions tried to sound the alarm and light the torch of rebellion against the legion of toxic agents contaminating the American body politic. Now the disease is so widespread and virulent one wonders if our particpitory democracy can be revived.

Impeachment, yes! Any and all who have participated in the onslaught. Then imprisonment. Then change, real change to insure such a junta of corporatists, fascists and their lickspittle can never be so empowered again.

Again kudos to you Keith...It's past time others spoke out as eloquently and acted as courageously. This historic moment--with the fate of world in the balance--demands nothing less.

Keith they don't tell truths, even giving them truth serium might be a good idea, although I don't know with how evil they are whether it would work or not!!!
Bush always wins. He is the master politician. Every time you devalue him, you play right into his hands and make it easy for him to exceed expectations.
Keith,
I have watched your show since the first one where you told us about all of the jobs where you had been fired.  I was "hooked" on you from then on!  You are my "Rock".
You are the only real truth we have in these dark days of Bush. We all need your solid facts and opinions to carry us through until he is finally gone.

I watch your show every night and admit that at the end of every show I say, "I love you Keith Olbermann."

We need you to keep us from the malaise that Bush and his cohorts generate.
