Special Comment Tonight: Resign

Posted: Tuesday, July 03, 2007 4:56 PM by Countdown

Tonight on Countdown, Keith Olbermann delivers a special comment just for President Bush and Vice President Cheney: 'resign.'

Here's a preview...    ((FULL COMMENT & VIDEO HERE))

--
Our generation's willingness to state "we didn't vote for him, but he's our president, and we hope he does a good job," was tested in the crucible of history, and earlier than most.

And in circumstances more tragic and threatening.

And we did.... that with which history tasked us.

We enveloped our President in 2001.

And those who did not believe he should have been elected -- indeed those who did not believe he had been elected -- willingly lowered their voices and assented to the sacred oath of non-partisanship.

And George W. Bush took our assent, and re-configured it, and honed it, and shaped it to a razor-sharp point...and stabbed this nation in the back with it.

Were there any remaining lingering doubt otherwise, or any remaining lingering hope, it ended yesterday when Mr. Bush commuted the prison sentence of one of his own staffers.

Did so even before the appeals process was complete…

Did so without as much as a courtesy consultation with the Department of Justice…

Did so despite what James Madison -- at the Constitutional Convention -- said about impeaching any president who pardoned or sheltered those who had committed crimes "advised by" that president…

Did so without the slightest concern that even the most detached of citizens must look at the chain of events and wonder:

To what degree was Mr. Libby told: break the law however you wish -- the President will keep you out of prison?

In that moment, Mr. Bush, you broke that fundamental com-pact between yourself and the majority of this nation's citizens -- the ones who did not cast votes for you.

In that moment, Mr. Bush, you ceased to be the President of the United States.

In that moment, Mr. Bush, you became merely the President… of a rabid and irresponsible corner of the Republican Party.

And this is too important a time, Sir, to have a commander-in-chief who puts party over nation.

Maybe Bush, Chaney and their clan should go over to Iraq and run for office.
Bush really is a hypocrite. He was about the most enthusiastic death-penalty governer I've ever heard of-yet when when someone of his cabinet is caught doing something patently dishonest, against the law and lord knows what else-covering up for Cheney, Rove and co-this clown lets him off the hook.

George-you DESERVE your '79 Jimmy Carter ratings. No really you do. Enjoy'em.
Keith, you are The Man.  I love you....no, I luff you...I lurve you.  When you spoke about habeas corpus, I wept. And here you are speaking out for justice yet again. I wish all the other stenographers in the MSM had a tenth of your courage.

You go, true patriot.
Brenda Deltona FL - We have gotten off on the wrong foot.  After having more posts from you to put you context, I owe you an apology for biting.  I think I may have even confused you for making another earlier provocative comment when I pounced.  I still generally don't care what Floridians think about politics for the stated Bush/Harris dynamic duo and for that I make no apology, but you seem like a sensible non-Kool-Aid type so I'll overlook it and consider you an honorary Georgian.  They'd be glad to have you.  Again, my apologies.  You are right.  I am mean and nasty.  With big sharp nasty teeth.  Once in a great while I bite an innocent.  Unlike hyper-partisans, I am human and make mistakes.  Please accept this apology in the spirit it is offered or feel free to tell me to go screw myself.  Good day and Happy 4th.
Keith, this nation does not have to wait on history to evaluate, "The legacy of this president". Yesterdays news spoke to truth, this president is now CRIMINAL AT LARGE! He should be frogged walked out of the White House (the peoples house).
I am reminded of the immortal words of George Orwell.  "Some of us are more equal than others."  President Bush proved that Monday.

As much as I would love POTUS AND VPOTUS to resign, all I believe that will happen is that they will just laugh this off, like they and theirs laugh everything else off (the war, Katrina, etc.).

Keith, I feel your pain, but I think that we will all feel more pain before all of this is through.  I truly believe that the core of the Republican Party will push for martial law before they will abandon these two from 1600 Penn. Ave.

The Republican Party has become the most unprincipled force in America.

Those who want to save the Republican Party, run away from this White House as far as you can.  If you keep drinking the Kool-Aid, 2008 will be a massacre.  The only question remaining is will people choose the Democrats or a bunch of Independents over you.

Keith Oberman has expressed the feelings of millions of people.  Unfortunately in the eyes of our lying administration, we don't count...only the Republican "mafia" counts.  For that is what they are...an entity onto themselves led by Rove and Cheney and their lackey Bush, who hasn't a clue how he has been used by them.  The hatred that Europeans have for us as Americans was recently seen by me when I was all over the Mediterranean countries and South America.  We have now become the enemy because of the Bush administration.  It will take decades to regain the level of trust we had throughout the world...if the terrorists don't get us first.  God help us because our governmental representatives could care less about us.  To them it's "what's in it for me...and if you have friends in high up places, you can be pardoned.  Disgusting!
Thank you Keith.
I feel as Americans must have felt, when Edward R. Murrow showed that another sham and fraud Joe McCarthy was comprised of nothing but lies and whole cloth. This is history ladies and gentlemen, we stand now at the brink. Mr. Olbermann you speak for us all.
You have the right to say Good Night and Good Luck..... We will all need it.

The Gang of Pirates started with a crime on the very day of the Y2K vote, there has been a tsunami of crimes on every day since. One does not have the time to be outraged by one crime before there are five more of equal or greater import.

There were hangable offenses before the first smirking oath of office, and there were impeachable ones  nearly every week since though not all known at the time, and I would guess that only a fraction are even known yet.

That has been the plan One outrage can concentrate opposition around it, ten thousand outrages create confusion and keep the opposition off balance and afraid that they would do something really stupid, and then they do anyway and the cycle starts again.
It is SO frustrating searching the MSM for any sense of urgency with the daily events surrounding bushit and co.  Thanks for an oasis in a desert of lies, spin and noise
Way to go Keith!!!! This incompetent duo must go!!! Can this democracy endure to the elections of 2008?!! Bush and Cheney, who are obviously following in the footsteps of Hitler, and his cronies are the greatest danger that  our country has had since its inception!!!
Thank you.  Thank you for saying what needs to be said.

Thank you.
Thank you Keith Oberman.  Say it, say it, and keep saying it - resign Bush.  Enjoyed the special comment tonight, great listening to someone on the air that will tell the truth.
Just heard the resignation comment!!
HERE! HERE! Mr. Olbermann!!!!!
You hit all the nails right on the head!!
But... they should be impeached, not resign!!!!
If nominated, would you run for President?
Keith, you did a great job and I would vote for you!  Thanks again, your commentary tonight was possibly the best yet.
AMEN!  No truer words have been spoken in the last 6 years!
i would love to hear comments on all of the people the Clinton admin, pardoned! but we would never hear this done by msnbc.
I just caught the end of this speech, but it was the most riveting 5 minutes I think I have ever heard/seen on TV--and I am 66 years old. Thank you! I cannot believe that anybody had the balls to say publically such flat truth to such power. Joe, I just hope the VP doesn't figure out a way to get you for it!!!
WOW!!!!! Thank-you Keith, you took the words right out of my mouth!!!!       THANK-YOU
Bravo, Mr. Olbermann, Bravo.

I plan to send the text of your special comment, as well as the YouTube link that will surely be up in a little while, to the President and Vice President.  And I'm going to encourage all my friends to do the same.
5 min of crap!!!!
AMEN!  No truer words have been spoken in the last 6 years!
Keith when you were a sports caster here in LA you stunk! BUT on this show you SHINE You are so on Bush and Dcikie boy should resign.  GO DUDE!!!
David
Keith,
Thank you. thank you. He has crossed the Rubicon, and it could be the end of our Republic. As a Civics and World History teacher I beg you to continue!!
I am speechless.  Thank you Keith.  Brillant words,  my thoughts out of your mouth.  You are a true patriot and an honorable American.
Thank you Keith!!!! I enjoy your broadcast nightly, but tonight you made me proud. Your comment was exactly what I feel. I only wish it would also reach the ears of the people that can take those two men out of office.
We are lucky to have you and your courage to speak the truth when so many tv journalists tip-toe around it. You are truly my hero.
Outstanding!
Mr. Olbermann, your comments were so right on, so wonderfully elequent, so exactly correct.  It's unfortunate that Bush will never hear it nor would he understand.  That is the scariest part of this whole thing.  Bush/Cheney simple don't care that what they do is obscenly wrong.  Cheney isn't running for president so he has no incentive to moderate anything he does. What can be done to them? Please keep speaking out as bluntly as you did tonight.  Perhaps the people will finally see the emperor has no clothes and do something.
Keith and msnbc---
Right on !!!!
THanks for growing a back bone and TRYING to awaken
the general public to action.
How much will the American Public take before they act in unison against this lying ?????
THANK YOU for speaking the truth of our hearts.
Keith,
Thank you. thank you. He has crossed the Rubicon, and it could be the end of our Republic. As a Civics and World History teacher I beg you to continue!!
Congratulations Mr. Olberman! Thank you for having the courage to speak out in public and to express what most of the American public knows is true, but are too afraid, too busy or too unaffected to express!
Thank you for reminding America what independance and freedom are and should be about.
Peace.
Thank you Keith Olberman!  This Republican can sleep well knowing there is another human being who speaks what I have had in my heart since the day Bush was elected the first term.  However, we live in a different day than the Nixon Administration, and there are places that these to deceivers will hide.  Somewhere tucked safely within The Patriot Act and Homeland Security.  I only hope the energy will be put forth for impeachment as was for Bill Clinton.  Strange words for a Republican, but I have said many times during the Bush Reign, "I miss Bill Clinton!"
Your special comment tonight, on the eve of July 4th 2007 was one of the most powerful pieces of journalism I have ever seen, and I thank you for it. Today of all days, it was something I needed to hear.
BRAVO Keith for speaking that which many citizens in the
World are crying out loud. We just hope your words are not in vane and they reach those whose ears have been deaf to all but themselves.
By far one of the greatest things I've heard on a national news channel in ages.  I hope this special comment is played and re-played until Bush actually gets the message... but it seems pretty apparent his handlers are incredibly voracious keeping bad news from reaching his ears.

If ever this President were to ever listen to the people of this nation, just once, I would hope it would be on this comment from Olbermann.
Bravo, Keith.  As a member of the DAR I applaud you for speaking the truth.  I cannot thank you enough for having the courage to speak out about how we all feel about Bush and Chaney.
Thank you,period
Mr. Olbermann congratulations this is something that should Echo in the circles of the so call Jounalist well done Sir looking forward to continuing whatching your show Sir. Happy 4th. of July
Mr. Olbermann, you have once again conveyed so very eloguantly the tone of the majority of the American People.  Not to discredit you, but when a journalist has a better handle on the voice of the people than its president, there's something terribly wrong.
But, as we know from your wonderful Special Comment tonight, this is a president that has no concern for his people, country or own dignity.
I commend you on a very emotional and important message tonight.
I join you in your plea for Bush & Cheney to resign.
As in a classic John Wayne movie, we'd all like to see them ride off into the sunset.
You, my friend are the voice of our nation.  Thank you for courageously speaking out!

Dear Keith,
BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO!
I thank you as I am sure millions of Americans do. I just wrote to my Congressmen my disgust over the Libby affair. Even with you as a powerful supporter, how can we as Americans take back our country, our government, and our constitution. Can our country take how many more months of this?
Bush and Chenney are
WAR CRIMINALS!!!  Plain and simple----they are terrorist-----
Profiting off the dead bodies of our countrymen
and innocent victims.
WAKE UP AMERICA AND ACT !!!
Thank You for TRUE flag waving AND truth, Keith.
Bravo again Mr. Olbermann! Thank you for courageously speaking truth to power and passionately expressing exactly what most  Americans feel . That it is way past time for Bush et al. to step down and give us back our Democracy. He,Cheney,Rice, and Gonzales are an embarrassment and a stain on a great nation that cherishes truth and justice.
Dear Keith,
BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO!
I thank you as I am sure millions of Americans do.affair. Even with you as a powerful supporter, how can we as Americans take back our country, our government, and our constitution. Can our country take how many more months of this?
Hey Keith
I think you lost it.  The only disappointment was that you didn't foam from the mouth.  President Bush is doing a great job. You on the other hand are a Clown.
Excellent commentary, you express what a majority (yes majority) of Americans feel, we've seen the things that have been going on during this administration and felt shame, disgust and helplessness. It has indeed passed being a right vs left, Dem vs Rep, Liberal vs Conservative issue, its now about whats right and decent, something I think the President and VP know little about.
Bravo!!!!! It`s about time someone in the media spoke up against the KING and his COURT.Banish them to Iraq so that they can rule over there.
Thank you, brother.
Thank you for speaking on behalf of the many Americans
who are fed up with the current administration.  I
agreed with everything you said.  Thank you for being
AMERICAN enough to stand up and speak against what is
truly unacceptable.  I love your show.  I support your
comments and I thank you!  Keep up the good work.
