Special Comment: It's Time to Resign

Finally tonight, as promised, a Special Comment on what is, in everything but name, George Bush's pardon of Scooter Libby.
        ---
"I didn't vote for him," an American once said, "But he's my president, and I hope he does a good job."
That -- on this eve of the 4th of July -- is the essence of this democracy, in seventeen words.
And that -- is what President Bush threw away yesterday in commuting the sentence of Lewis "Scooter" Libby.

The man who said those seventeen words -- improbably enough -- was the actor John Wayne.

And Wayne, an ultra-conservative, said them, when he learned of the hair's-breadth election of John F. Kennedy instead of his personal favorite, Richard Nixon in 1960.
"I didn't vote for him but he's my president, and I hope he does a good job."

The sentiment was doubtlessly expressed earlier.
But there is something especially appropriate about hearing it, now, in Wayne's voice:
The crisp matter-of-fact acknowledgement that we have survived, even though for nearly two centuries now, our Commander-in-Chief has also served, simultaneously, as the head of one political party and often the scourge of all others.
        ---
We as citizens must, at some point, ignore a president's partisanship. Not that we may prosper as a nation, not that we may achieve, not that we may lead the world -- but merely that we may function.
But just as essential to the seventeen words of John Wayne, is an implicit trust -- a sacred trust:
That the president for whom so many did not vote, can in turn suspend his political self long enough, and for matters imperative enough, to conduct himself solely for the benefit of the entire Republic.

Our generation's willingness to state "we didn't vote for him, but he's our president, and we hope he does a good job," was tested in the crucible of history, and earlier than most.
And in circumstances more tragic and threatening.
And we did.... that with which history tasked us.

We envelopped our President in 2001.
And those who did not believe he should have been elected -- indeed those who did not believe he had been elected -- willingly lowered their voices and assented to the sacred oath of non-partisanship.

And George W. Bush took our assent, and re-configured it, and honed it, and shaped it to a razor-sharp point...,and stabbed this nation in the back with it.
Were there any remaining lingering doubt otherwise, or any remaining lingering hope, it ended yesterday when Mr. Bush commuted the prison sentence of one of his own staffers.
Did so even before the appeals process was complete…
Did so without as much as a courtesy consultation with the Department of Justice…
Did so despite what James Madison -- at the Constitutional Convention -- said about impeaching any president who pardoned or sheltered those who had committed crimes "advised by" that president…
Did so without the slightest concern that even the most detached of citizens must look at the chain of events and wonder:
To what degree was Mr. Libby told: break the law however you wish -- the President will keep you out of prison?

In that moment, Mr. Bush, you broke that fundamental com-pact between yourself and the majority of this nation's citizens -- the ones who did not cast votes for you.
In that moment, Mr. Bush, you ceased to be the President of the United States.
In that moment, Mr. Bush, you became merely the President… of a rabid and irresponsible corner of the Republican Party.
And this is too important a time, Sir, to have a commander-in-chief who puts party over nation.

This has been, of course, the gathering legacy of this Administration.
Few of its decisions have escaped the stain of politics.
The extraordinary Karl Rove has spoken of "a permanent Republican majority," as if such a thing -- or a permanent Democratic majority -- is not antithetical to that upon which rests: our country, our history, our revolution, our freedoms.

Yet our Democracy has survived shrewder men than Karl Rove.
And it has survived the frequent stain of politics upon the fabric of government.
But this administration, with ever-increasing insistence and almost theo-cratic zealotry, has turned that stain… into a massive oil spill.

The protection of the environment… is turned over to those of one political party, who will financially benefit from the rape of the environment.

The protections of the Constitution… are turned over to those of one political party, who believe those protections unnecessary and extravagant and quaint.

The enforcement of the laws… is turned over to those of one political party, who will swear beforehand that they will not enforce those laws.

The choice between war and peace… is turned over to those of one political party, who stand to gain vast wealth by ensuring that there is never peace, but only war.

And now, when just one cooked book gets corrected by an honest auditor…
When just one trampling of the inherent and inviolable fairness of government is rejected by an impartial judge…
When just one wild-eyed partisan is stopped by the figure of blind justice…
This President decides that he, and not the law, must prevail.

I accuse you, Mr. Bush, of lying this country into war.
I accuse you of fabricating in the minds of your own people, a false implied link between Saddam Hussein and 9/11.
I accuse you of firing the generals who told you that the plans for Iraq were disastrously insufficient.
I accuse you of causing in Iraq the needless deaths of 3,586 of our brothers and sons, and sisters and daughters, and friends and neighbors.
I accuse you of subverting the Constitution, not in some misguided but sincerely-motivated struggle to combat terrorists, but to stifle dissent.
I accuse you of fomenting fear among your own people, of creating the very terror you claim to have fought.
I accuse you of exploiting that unreasoning fear, the natural fear of your own people who just want to live their lives in peace, as a political tool to slander your critics and libel your opponents.
I accuse you of handing part of this Republic over to a Vice President who is without conscience, and letting him run roughshod over it.
And I accuse you now, Mr. Bush, of giving, through that Vice President, carte blanche to Mr. Libby, to help defame Ambassador Joseph Wilson by any means necessary, to lie to Grand Juries and Special Counsel and before a court, in order to protect the mechanisms and particulars of that defamation, with your guarantee that Libby would never see prison, and, in so doing, as Ambassador Wilson himself phrased it here last night, of becoming an accessory… to the obstruction of justice.

        ---
When President Nixon ordered the firing of the Watergate special prosecutor Archibald Cox during the infamous "Saturday Night Massacre" on October 20th, 1973, Cox initially responded tersely, and ominously.
"Whether ours shall be a government of laws and not of men, is now for Congress, and ultimately, the American people."

President Nixon did not understand how he had crystallized the issue of Watergate for the American people.

It had been about the obscure meaning behind an attempt to break in to a rival party's headquarters; and the labyrinthine effort to cover-up that break-in and the related crimes.

And in one night, Nixon transformed it.
Watergate -- instantaneously -- became a simpler issue: a President overruling the inexorable march of the law… of insisting -- in a way that resonated viscerally with millions who had not previously understood - that he was the law.
         Not the Constitution.
         Not the Congress.
         Not the Courts.
         Just him.

Just - Mr. Bush - as you did, yesterday.
The twists and turns of Plame-Gate, of your precise and intricate lies that sent us into this bottomless pit of Iraq; your lies upon the lies to discredit Joe Wilson; your lies upon the lies upon the lies to throw the sand at the "referee" of Prosecutor Fitzgerald's analogy… these are complex and often painful to follow, and too much, perhaps, for the average citizen.
But when other citizens render a verdict against your man, Mr. Bush -- and then you spit in the faces of those jurors and that judge and the judges who were yet to hear the appeal -- the average citizen understands that, Sir.
It's the fixed ballgame and the rigged casino and the pre-arranged lottery all rolled into one -- and it stinks.
         And they know it.

Nixon's mistake, the last and most fatal of them, the firing of Archibald Cox, was enough to cost him the presidency.
And in the end, even Richard Nixon could say he could not put this nation through an impeachment.
It was far too late for it to matter then, but as the decades unfold, that single final gesture of non-partisanship, of acknowledged responsibility not to self, not to party, not to "base," but to country, echoes loudly into history.
Even Richard Nixon knew it was time to resign

Would that you could say that, Mr. Bush.
And that you could say it for Mr. Cheney.
You both crossed the Rubicon yesterday.
Which one of you chose the route, no longer matters.
Which is the ventriloquist, and which the dummy, is irrelevant.
But that you have twisted the machinery of government into nothing more than a tawdry machine of politics, is the only fact that remains relevant.
It is nearly July 4th, Mr. Bush, the commemoration of the moment we Americans decided that rather than live under a King who made up the laws, or erased them, or ignored them -- or commuted the sentences of those rightly convicted under them -- we would force our independence, and regain our sacred freedoms.
We of this time -- and our leaders in Congress, of both parties -- must now live up to those standards which echo through our history:
Pressure, negotiate, impeach -- get you, Mr. Bush, and Mr. Cheney, two men who are now perilous to our Democracy, away from its helm.
For you, Mr. Bush, and for Mr. Cheney, there is a lesser task.
You need merely achieve a very low threshold indeed.
Display just that iota of patriotism which Richard Nixon showed, on August 9th, 1974.
         Resign.
And give us someone -- anyone -- about whom all of us might yet be able to quote John Wayne, and say, "I didn't vote for him, but he's my president, and I hope he does a good job."
         ---
         Good night, and good luck.

Once again Mr Olbermann, you have led the way to demanding the only move left to save this country - IMPEACH BUSH & CHENEY.

Thank you.
Keith, you rock!! Keep showing us the light! As they said in 1974 "IMPEACH THE CHEIF"!!!
Wow! You tore the man a much needed new cloaka.
Bravo!
Thank You

Randy
This commentary was brilliant.  It put into eloquent words the uneasy and infuriating feelings I had with this deplorable action.
God bless you, Keith Olbermann, for preaching the kind of "fire and brimstone" that desperately needs to be said, to be heard! A copy of this Special Comment should be on the desk of every Congressional Representative and Senator. You have given voice to the feelings of We The People who want our Republic back. Had I the means, I would nail a copy of it to the door of the Oval Office!

Again, thank you and God bless you, Keith!

A glass of the finest beer to you, Keith.  You are one of the few of today's media, left or right, to say what needs to be said.  17 years ago, I took an oath to support and defend the Constitution as a member of our military.  I'm ashamed that our Commander and Chief has virtually shredded what I and many others were ready to sacrifice for.  At least Nixon had the decency to resign.  Thank you, Keith.  Thank you!
I WHOLEHEARTLYL AGREE. IT IS TIME FOR IMPEACHMENT!!!!!!!!!!OF BUSH AND CHENEY.

Absolutely ridiculous tirade that serves to accomplish nothing. Obermann should be fired. forget for a moment the pardons handed out to Clinton's friends and the lack of attention Obermann and his likes gave that, forget for a moment that Clinton lied under oath...did he serve jail time? the whole spin game is old and getting older by the minute. We should stop watching and paying for all the spin jockeys, put in term limits on all politicians and take this country back.
Bravo!  Go Keith!  Go Keith!
Keith was so passionate in his special comment tonight...I thought his head was going to pop!  Very well said...Even Richard Nixon knew when it was time to resign!
Just when I was getting bored with Countdown...
Keith...you were brilliant. And factual - which of course doesn't sit well with this White House. Keep speaking the truth to power...you're the man.
Keith, my husband and I just watched your comment, and I was close to tears.  Thank you for articulating the outrage, and connecting all the dots so that more Americans hopefully will be able to see what I've been seeing since the media elite first presented this naked boy-emperor as a plausible candidate for president in 2000.

We are all responsible for this.  We let them do it because most of us do not own this war.  This administration is counting on our comfort/laziness/inability to clean up absolutely everything they throw at the wall.  It is a lot.  Thank you again for speaking out.
Thank you Keith for being far more eloquent than I could ever be.  Thank you for giving voice to everything I have felt for the last several years.  Thank you for giving a damn about that upon which this country was founded.
Mr. Olbermann

I just finished watching your special comment and it moved to me not just tears but to sobs. What these cowardly greedy men have done to our government and how they've degraded our Constitution has broken my faith in our system. The Congress refuses to act. The traditional televised and print media (save yourself and a few others) covered for these criminals until it became way too late - next stop Iran.

Thank you for the clarion call to impeach Bush and Cheney. But unfortunately our system has been politicized to the point it will never happen. Republicans will never do it, Democrats don't have enough votes. I think we'll be lucky if Bush and Cheney 'resign' at the end of their term.

Sigh. Have a Happy 4th of July.

Keith O.,
Consider this both a compliment on your passionate speech and complete agreement with its' content. I have often admired both your satirical wit and apparent humanity. Bravo...You are also a very brave man considering the maniacs that are running the asylum. If you need a hideout I will be proud to keep watch while you sleep.
THANK YOU KEITH! You did it again! This was one of your best! And right on target.
Another one of Keith's great commentaries that needs to be out there for all to hear. But the ones who this is about......they just don't care. The won't hear this voice. They don't hear any of our voices, only their own people's.
What can we really do to get these guys in the White House to resign? Why was it so easy to do what was done to Clinton who was not guilty of killing over 3000 of our greatest and bravest men and women, along with hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi's? Why can't we do something to get these two guys out???
Thank you. Thank you very much sir. You in your expert tone and retoric, have once again single handedly expressed what the majority of the American public truley believes. With the lack of the truth being heard on major media outlets, it is refreshing to know that we can get the truth from you and others like you. Kudos, sir to you, Air America, Sirius Left, and the others who struggle to let the truth be known.
Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant, Bravo.
WOW ! That was fantastic to say the very least! I need a "sound" copy of that commentary. How can I get that? I hope, along with you; that the American people wake up. I have been saying for quite awile that the people need to realize that this is about MORE than being a Democrat and definetly MUCH MORE than being a Republican; this is about being an AMERICAN and saving our country and our democracy from the unsrupulousness of 2 men and those who would do anything to protect them no matter what they do. PLease tell me how to get my hands on a copy of that commentary!!!!!
As Kurt Vonnegut said in Breakfast of Champions:

"The chief weapon of sea pirates, however, was their capacity to astonish. Nobody else could believe, until it was too late, how heartless and greedy they were."
-
Can't you just see Dick in an eye patch and parrot with the trained monkey acting as cabin boy?  And I am thinking of Andy Richter's brilliant portrayal as a dead cabin boy as the monkey's role-model.  Those of you who have seen Cabin Boy know why.

ARE YOU GOING TO DO SOMETHING NOW CONGRESS?  TIME TO COWBOY UP OR KISS THE PIRATE KING'S RING.  Choose VERY carefully.  There are consequences.  Serious ones.

We the People are watching.  YOUR move, Congress.  NOW.
Jeffrey Wilson -

1) Reagan pardoned three less people than Clinton.
2) Clinton was never convicted.

Let's talk pardons:
http://www.usdoj.gov/pardon/actions_administration.htm

Richard Nixon: 863 pardons.
Gerald Ford: 382 pardons.
Ronald Reagan: 393 pardons.

Good night, Jeff.
Keith

One word to express my feeling of 7-3-07
special comment segment.  To wit:

    BRAVO!!!!!

Keep up the good work!
Mr. Olbermann:  BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO!! My husband and I just caught your commentary and sat there in awe of your spectacularly comprehensive--and accurate--summary of ALL that has so gone horribly wrong with this administration. A friend of mine just last night told me about a bumper sticker he just saw that says it all: "I LOVE MY COUNTRY, IT'S MY GOVERNMENT THAT I FEAR."
AS ALWAYS YOUR RIGHT ON THE MONEY!!!

Keith,

You said tonight what had to be said. You stepped up for all of the American people. I commend you and thank you on behalf of all of the American people. It takes a special type of courage to speak the truth to power. Congress must step in and step in now. This is the most agregious and arrogant coverup, all because the WMD was a lie and over 3,500 young men and women have died.
I thank you, Mr. Olberman, for so eloquently stating my frustration and anger about the past six years.  You are a true patriot and I thank you for your brave commentary.  Please continue your excellent work.
Hurray for Keith and the management of MSNBC.  I cannot understand how so many people in this country don't see and admit to what is being done TO US.  I don't care what your political affiliation is, but at least have the "balls" to admit when someone is BAD.  Bill "C" had sex, big deal, he didn't lead us into a senseless war or kill 3,500 good people and ruin the lives of countless thousands of others.  If "W" was the CEO of a company whose stockholders relied on him to make them money and keep the company profitable he would have been fired long ago.  His daddy bought him oil companies, ball teams and he has failed at everything he has been involved in.  Thank you Keith for voicing so elequently what needs to be said.
finally someone in the media who thinks just like an average AMERICAN i applaude you for this. everything you said tonight is how i have been feeling for the past 6and 1/2 years please keep speaking for people like me whose only voice and choice is in the right to vote. with people like you speaking to the masses we (the masses)can make a difference and change the direction of this country for the better
Jeffrey Wilson,  go watch Fox,  they are your people over there.  MSNBC is for those of us in the U.S. intelligent enough to know when our Constitution is being trampled on.  Fox news is better suited to those who don't care about the truth and want to know more about Paris Hilton.

Keith you were brillant tonight as always!  Keep speaking the truth for those of us without a voice loud enough or public enough to speak up.  I salute you.  Thank you for saying what so may of us are thinking.
Thank you, Mr. Olbermann, for having the courage to speak your words asking Bush and Cheney to resign.  We need more persons like you with access to the media and not in the money clutches of lobbists to speak in plain english the unadulterated facts.  God bless you, Mr. Olbermann, and please continue informing and challenging we citizens.

Muchisimas Gracias a Keith for his blockbuster comment. Orwell said, "In times of universal deceit, telling the truth will be a revolutionary act."  Thank you, Mr. Olbermann, for being that revolutionary.  May your courageous stand inspire the country to join the fight.  Marina Garcia Gelpe, Ithaca, New York.  Teacher, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Activist.
This comment was so much more than I could have ever hoped for THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH KEITH!!! We do love you and Thank you for telling the truth and stopping the spin from the LIARS!!!!
If MSNBC does the same to you as they did Phil Donahue ditched him and was the highest rated show on MSNBC at the time that spoke out against going to war with IRAQ. Who also when he had his show spoke out for the few of us who knew back then what these sickos were capable of, I swear I WILL CALL THE ADVERTISERS and BOYCOTT THEIR BUTTS! I use alot of Proctor and Gamble Products HERE THAT P&G watch all the large percentage of people who I will ask to join in on it!
Keith...Bravo!! WOW...your commentary was sooo right on every point!!!..Finally, someone has eloquently and emphatically put into words the horror of this administration...I have never felt so disconnected as an American from the process...and we have a President who doesn't seem to care...thank you for articulating our discontent!!
"17 years ago, I took an oath to support and defend the Constitution as a member of our military.  I'm ashamed that our Commander and Chief has virtually shredded what I and many others were ready to sacrifice for."--John B., Jackson, MS
Ditto. I took that same oath nearly 30 years ago. So did my grandfather, my father, my sister, and currently, my niece. And it is disgraceful that this administration has given me, my grandfather, my father, my sister, my niece and all who have served and who are serving our country, basically, the middle finger. Bravo Keith, for your eloquent and passionate defense of what all veterans have defended and all military service members are currently defending--our precious Constitution.
You said tonight what needed to be said. I think there should be a citizens march on Washington each carrying your message of tonight to post on the White house fence. You are courageous and thank you for being on the air!
You spoke what is is in the heart of the average American today.  We pay our taxes, we obide by the law, and we pray that our president, regardless of whether he is our choice or not, will be honest and do what is best for the country.  This administration has shown without doubt that they are only there for their own agenda and have no regard for justice for all and what is best for the country as a whole.  As you spoke tonight, I had to actually applaud because you were speaking for us....the backbone of this country...the people who work and pay their taxes and always abide by the laws.  I would just pray that Bush who proclaims to be such a Christian person would actually listen to what the heart of the people of this country fell and do what is is right.....resign!
Way to go, Keith!  I could not have said it better!
RIGHT ON! I have felt all that you said tonight and I'm am glad you had the courage to stand up and say what has to be said and has been true for way to long!  What do we as American citizens do ?  I hope Congress will take a stand.  Your comments about R. Nixon were right on too.  I do not think Bush is as smart as Nixon and will not resign (I think he is too proud) even though he should for the good of the country.  I think his (and Cheney's) "sins" are far worse than Nixon's  Thanks for standing up and being counted.  I watch your show because you give us the truth!

Keith, you bring a whole new meaning to the word 'idiot'. Don't you know that several of the jurors serving in the grand jury investigation who as a group convicted Libby, also want to see him pardoned? Doesn't that say something about the farce that this trial actually was? The prosecutor knew in advance of the trial who had leaked Plame's name - not a Bush sympathizer by any stretch. You'd like to pretend that isn't the truth, though, because of your bitter pathological hatred of anything remotely conservative. It wouldn't matter if it were President Bush or President Reagan - your foaming at the mouth would be the same. Resign, Keith, before you bring the entire MSNBC cable network down with you.
Excellent comment.

Thank you, Keith!
Aw, Jeffrey Wilson...the truth hurts, doesn't it? It should!

When all else fails, just say "Clinton was worse, Clinton was worse, Clinton was worse." Keep repeating it. Jump up and down and stomp and hold your breath till ya turn blue...Still doesn't make it true.

Keith isn't a "spin jockey," he's a patriot...and your attempt at cloaking yourself in some sort of phony bipartisanism is as transparent as glass. Go find someplace else to play. We're not fooled.

As for Keith...what else can I say but thank you. You said everything that needed to be said with all the focus and intensity and righteous anger with which it needed to be said. I hope your words, and how you looked saying them, are spread far and wide. They deserve to be.

It was the best Special Comment ever...on the best Countdown ever.

Happy Independence Day, everyone. Enjoy it, and when you do, remember that we DO still have a democracy...if we can keep it. And right now, we need to do something to go about keeping it.

Have fun, but stay safe...as Ghoulardi used to say, "Cool it with the boom-booms!" (And why not...Keith gave us plenty of his own fireworks tonight! Who needs all that many more?)
BRAVO!!!  Keith Olbermann's commentary this evening was truly brilliant!  He is one who is brave enough to "cut to the chase" and speak the truth about what intelligent people know but what everyone is too afraid to say. How much longer can any American believe in this presidency?  A million "THANKS" to you, Mr. Olbermann...
Thank you Mr. Olbermann for your brave comments tonight.  Thank you for exposing the simple facts and saying that which so many of us have no vocal outlet from which to speak.

What example is this government setting for the younger people of this country?  How do we parents teach our children right from wrong when our government doesn't seem to know the difference?  How much more damage and voilations of trust must occur before this Congress stops the damage and impeaches those committing the damage?  What does the White House have to do to finally be held accountable to the rule of law? This was such a wonderful country...please, return to the rule of law.

Please stop torturing.  Please tell us the truth. Please care about everyone on the planet.

Please think about future generations and not just our own current special interest.  Please set an example of courage and honest ethics.  Please give us back a country for which we can truly be proud and for whom our brave soldiers give so much. Please be honest.

Mr. Olbermann, have courage and continue to speak truth to power.  "We the People" need your voice.
Thank you Keith for your absolutely brilliant comments.  Your reference to July 4th reminded me of the very document that made that date famous.  You prompted me to reflect upon the time when the colonists accused the King of horrible offenses, including, "For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever." (Jefferson, 1776).  How is this any different?  When one person considers himself judge and jury, not to mention above the law, where does this leave us?  Please continue to use your voice to demand answers to such questions.  I am sickened by our president and his lack of accountability to anyone.  Please help us take OUR country back.
As has happened, whenever I have tuned in to one of your Special Comments, I was moved to tears. My husband spontaneously burst into applause, while tears ran down my cheeks. We are extremely grateful to you and your trur patriotism. I wrote letters to my Senators and Congressman today imploring them to put the pressure on regarding this, most recent act of Bush's against democracy. I admire your courage, Keith! Keep it up. We need you!
Thank you, Mr. Olbermann! You say it so well- I just hope enough people listen. It is time to stand up and take our country back from this horrid administration!
You did it again! You spoke the truth passionately and with clarity. Because of you Americans still have a voice in the media.  Thank you
Clinton was impeached. Maybe Bush should be, too.
Thank You again Keith at least it is nice to know that I am not the only one who is outraged by this administration and it flagrant violations of Americans' Laws and Trust.
Lets here it for President Pelosi,

Jeffrey from Evansville you sound rather foolish. Quit drinking the koolaide you are truley losing any sane thought patterns
