Special Comment: It's Time to Resign

Finally tonight, as promised, a Special Comment on what is, in everything but name, George Bush's pardon of Scooter Libby.
        ---
"I didn't vote for him," an American once said, "But he's my president, and I hope he does a good job."
That -- on this eve of the 4th of July -- is the essence of this democracy, in seventeen words.
And that -- is what President Bush threw away yesterday in commuting the sentence of Lewis "Scooter" Libby.

The man who said those seventeen words -- improbably enough -- was the actor John Wayne.

And Wayne, an ultra-conservative, said them, when he learned of the hair's-breadth election of John F. Kennedy instead of his personal favorite, Richard Nixon in 1960.
"I didn't vote for him but he's my president, and I hope he does a good job."

The sentiment was doubtlessly expressed earlier.
But there is something especially appropriate about hearing it, now, in Wayne's voice:
The crisp matter-of-fact acknowledgement that we have survived, even though for nearly two centuries now, our Commander-in-Chief has also served, simultaneously, as the head of one political party and often the scourge of all others.
        ---
We as citizens must, at some point, ignore a president's partisanship. Not that we may prosper as a nation, not that we may achieve, not that we may lead the world -- but merely that we may function.
But just as essential to the seventeen words of John Wayne, is an implicit trust -- a sacred trust:
That the president for whom so many did not vote, can in turn suspend his political self long enough, and for matters imperative enough, to conduct himself solely for the benefit of the entire Republic.

Our generation's willingness to state "we didn't vote for him, but he's our president, and we hope he does a good job," was tested in the crucible of history, and earlier than most.
And in circumstances more tragic and threatening.
And we did.... that with which history tasked us.

We envelopped our President in 2001.
And those who did not believe he should have been elected -- indeed those who did not believe he had been elected -- willingly lowered their voices and assented to the sacred oath of non-partisanship.

And George W. Bush took our assent, and re-configured it, and honed it, and shaped it to a razor-sharp point...,and stabbed this nation in the back with it.
Were there any remaining lingering doubt otherwise, or any remaining lingering hope, it ended yesterday when Mr. Bush commuted the prison sentence of one of his own staffers.
Did so even before the appeals process was complete…
Did so without as much as a courtesy consultation with the Department of Justice…
Did so despite what James Madison -- at the Constitutional Convention -- said about impeaching any president who pardoned or sheltered those who had committed crimes "advised by" that president…
Did so without the slightest concern that even the most detached of citizens must look at the chain of events and wonder:
To what degree was Mr. Libby told: break the law however you wish -- the President will keep you out of prison?

In that moment, Mr. Bush, you broke that fundamental com-pact between yourself and the majority of this nation's citizens -- the ones who did not cast votes for you.
In that moment, Mr. Bush, you ceased to be the President of the United States.
In that moment, Mr. Bush, you became merely the President… of a rabid and irresponsible corner of the Republican Party.
And this is too important a time, Sir, to have a commander-in-chief who puts party over nation.

This has been, of course, the gathering legacy of this Administration.
Few of its decisions have escaped the stain of politics.
The extraordinary Karl Rove has spoken of "a permanent Republican majority," as if such a thing -- or a permanent Democratic majority -- is not antithetical to that upon which rests: our country, our history, our revolution, our freedoms.

Yet our Democracy has survived shrewder men than Karl Rove.
And it has survived the frequent stain of politics upon the fabric of government.
But this administration, with ever-increasing insistence and almost theo-cratic zealotry, has turned that stain… into a massive oil spill.

The protection of the environment… is turned over to those of one political party, who will financially benefit from the rape of the environment.

The protections of the Constitution… are turned over to those of one political party, who believe those protections unnecessary and extravagant and quaint.

The enforcement of the laws… is turned over to those of one political party, who will swear beforehand that they will not enforce those laws.

The choice between war and peace… is turned over to those of one political party, who stand to gain vast wealth by ensuring that there is never peace, but only war.

And now, when just one cooked book gets corrected by an honest auditor…
When just one trampling of the inherent and inviolable fairness of government is rejected by an impartial judge…
When just one wild-eyed partisan is stopped by the figure of blind justice…
This President decides that he, and not the law, must prevail.

I accuse you, Mr. Bush, of lying this country into war.
I accuse you of fabricating in the minds of your own people, a false implied link between Saddam Hussein and 9/11.
I accuse you of firing the generals who told you that the plans for Iraq were disastrously insufficient.
I accuse you of causing in Iraq the needless deaths of 3,586 of our brothers and sons, and sisters and daughters, and friends and neighbors.
I accuse you of subverting the Constitution, not in some misguided but sincerely-motivated struggle to combat terrorists, but to stifle dissent.
I accuse you of fomenting fear among your own people, of creating the very terror you claim to have fought.
I accuse you of exploiting that unreasoning fear, the natural fear of your own people who just want to live their lives in peace, as a political tool to slander your critics and libel your opponents.
I accuse you of handing part of this Republic over to a Vice President who is without conscience, and letting him run roughshod over it.
And I accuse you now, Mr. Bush, of giving, through that Vice President, carte blanche to Mr. Libby, to help defame Ambassador Joseph Wilson by any means necessary, to lie to Grand Juries and Special Counsel and before a court, in order to protect the mechanisms and particulars of that defamation, with your guarantee that Libby would never see prison, and, in so doing, as Ambassador Wilson himself phrased it here last night, of becoming an accessory… to the obstruction of justice.

        ---
When President Nixon ordered the firing of the Watergate special prosecutor Archibald Cox during the infamous "Saturday Night Massacre" on October 20th, 1973, Cox initially responded tersely, and ominously.
"Whether ours shall be a government of laws and not of men, is now for Congress, and ultimately, the American people."

President Nixon did not understand how he had crystallized the issue of Watergate for the American people.

It had been about the obscure meaning behind an attempt to break in to a rival party's headquarters; and the labyrinthine effort to cover-up that break-in and the related crimes.

And in one night, Nixon transformed it.
Watergate -- instantaneously -- became a simpler issue: a President overruling the inexorable march of the law… of insisting -- in a way that resonated viscerally with millions who had not previously understood - that he was the law.
         Not the Constitution.
         Not the Congress.
         Not the Courts.
         Just him.

Just - Mr. Bush - as you did, yesterday.
The twists and turns of Plame-Gate, of your precise and intricate lies that sent us into this bottomless pit of Iraq; your lies upon the lies to discredit Joe Wilson; your lies upon the lies upon the lies to throw the sand at the "referee" of Prosecutor Fitzgerald's analogy… these are complex and often painful to follow, and too much, perhaps, for the average citizen.
But when other citizens render a verdict against your man, Mr. Bush -- and then you spit in the faces of those jurors and that judge and the judges who were yet to hear the appeal -- the average citizen understands that, Sir.
It's the fixed ballgame and the rigged casino and the pre-arranged lottery all rolled into one -- and it stinks.
         And they know it.

Nixon's mistake, the last and most fatal of them, the firing of Archibald Cox, was enough to cost him the presidency.
And in the end, even Richard Nixon could say he could not put this nation through an impeachment.
It was far too late for it to matter then, but as the decades unfold, that single final gesture of non-partisanship, of acknowledged responsibility not to self, not to party, not to "base," but to country, echoes loudly into history.
Even Richard Nixon knew it was time to resign

Would that you could say that, Mr. Bush.
And that you could say it for Mr. Cheney.
You both crossed the Rubicon yesterday.
Which one of you chose the route, no longer matters.
Which is the ventriloquist, and which the dummy, is irrelevant.
But that you have twisted the machinery of government into nothing more than a tawdry machine of politics, is the only fact that remains relevant.
It is nearly July 4th, Mr. Bush, the commemoration of the moment we Americans decided that rather than live under a King who made up the laws, or erased them, or ignored them -- or commuted the sentences of those rightly convicted under them -- we would force our independence, and regain our sacred freedoms.
We of this time -- and our leaders in Congress, of both parties -- must now live up to those standards which echo through our history:
Pressure, negotiate, impeach -- get you, Mr. Bush, and Mr. Cheney, two men who are now perilous to our Democracy, away from its helm.
For you, Mr. Bush, and for Mr. Cheney, there is a lesser task.
You need merely achieve a very low threshold indeed.
Display just that iota of patriotism which Richard Nixon showed, on August 9th, 1974.
         Resign.
And give us someone -- anyone -- about whom all of us might yet be able to quote John Wayne, and say, "I didn't vote for him, but he's my president, and I hope he does a good job."
         ---
         Good night, and good luck.

Keith,

Thank you! The special comment tonight, as always, was just wonderful! Keep up the good work!
You did it again! You spoke the truth passionately and with clarity. Because of you, Americans still have a voice in the media.  Thank you
Keith,
Thankfully someone has finally stood up and spoke the truth about this corrupt President. Edward R. Murrow would be proud. I hope MSNBC and for that matter all the other networks run your commentary. It was brillant!
RIVETING!  Once again Keith, you are the only one who has the guts to say what needs to be said.  Enough is enough with the arrogance of this administration (I use this term loosely).  It is time to demand the resignation of this president and vice president. IT IS TIME!!!    Thank you Keith.  Thank you, thank you thank you...
Wow! you realy made an ass out of yourself......i just thought you were a dick before.
Bravo! The gloves are taken off and you have spoken the truth about these people more eloquently than anyone else has ever done. We wondered how you could do another special comment because everything that you could have said has been said tonight, but I'm afraid they will keep giving you new material.
Stop watching.

Stop watching the vicious, vindictive and treacherous actions to reveal our active CIA agents, serving to protect us from nuclear holocaust, and to cover it up, by our own officials.

Stop watching our second-highest official relieve himself of the responsibilities of the office he swore to uphold, under the highest penalty of our laws.

Stop watching our highest law administrators destroy the structure of their own departments, then fail to recall to you about it in front of Congress.

Stop watching our Constitutional voting rights get caged and subverted by those assigned to protect and administer them, in ways that require the charge of felony.

Stop watching our soldiers follow orders to fight a war where there was no war, but where war is now growing more deadly every day, against them and itself. And we are told it will grow more deadly if we leave. Try to stop THAT stupidity.

We will stop watching, and take action to ensure this can never, ever happen to the USA and our rights again. Stop being afraid.
Exactly, Keith.

Resign or firing squad....high crimes and misdemeanors.

To Jeffrey wilson....FYI - Bush has pardoned folks during his term as president. It's on the government justice site. As for Clinton, it's not germane - it was about SEX for chrissakes!

Libby LIED to deliberately OBSTRUCT an investigation so the special prosecutor couldn't get to Bush or Cheney. He was tried; he was convicted; he was sentenced; he was going to jail - so Bush commutated his sentence to keep Libby from spilling his guts.

Come up with some new talking points; the old ones, especially about Clenis, are dead.
Olberman repeatedly shows his lack of intelligence and NBC fired Stone Phillips!!!  Fire Olberman...what a creep...he actually thinks he is cute!!  Read the BIBLE Olberman...you  might get an idea of how to treat people.  The Bible says to pray for your leaders!!  Why  dont you and ROSIE get together and sing an off key duet??  I sure would hate to be in hers and your shoes when it comes to reaping!!!!  GET FIRED!!!!!
Keith, you said it all!!  You expressed, so eloquently, what has been such a puzzlement about this man ever since he took office..  Note, I said, TOOK office. Why has it taken so long for the American people to realize what an incompetent he is? You have my vote for president of the United States.
Thanks!

"It is nearly July 4th, Mr. Bush, the commemoration of the moment we Americans decided that rather than live under a King who made up the laws, or erased them, or ignored them -- or commuted the sentences of those rightly convicted under them -- we would force our independence, and regain our sacred freedoms."

You took the words right out of my mouth

Well done!  You have articulated what so many of us are thinking & feeling today.
Excellent comments !!! I think its about time we non bush voters let all bush voters know we are tired of the idiocy.
http://www.myspace.com/kirbyalexander
Excellent commentary. Would that this administration cared about wisdom, reason, justice or the will of the people. Alas, I've given up hope on impeachment. I now think the most appropriate action is exile. Iraq would be my first choice of place to exile them to, although I'm sensitive to the argument that the Iraqis have suffered enough.
Keith,

Your articulate yet passionate comments must be heard by all citizens of this democracy. I applaude you. This neoconservative administaration has hijacked our democracy and blatantly driven us into a ditch. Thank you for pointing out the obvious which we have been numbed to. I hope the democrats have the balls to call the Bush administartion on what they have done and force the impeachment of Bush & Cheney. Thanks for your insight and articulation!
OH give that "But But But Clinton" crud a rest already. Clinton was tried and found NOT GUILTY. Don't you get it yet?  And so what if he lied about a BJ. Not quite the same as covering up for your criminal VP boss who led the fight to go to war with a country that was no threat to us and then lying about what transpired in the Grand Jury.

Your guy was prosecuted by a republican, tried by a republican and found guilty. Major difference there slick.

This was one of Keith's best comments. Really good.

He'd make a great network anchor except they are terrified of anchors who tell the truth.
Thank you so much for tonight's special comment. Now that we, the people are fired up and angry as hell, what do we do? This administration has left us feeling castrated of our rights. Please help us to channel this anger.
Who's going to impose term limits on the politicians-
the politicians?!  They're all liars (lawyers) and crooks as Mr. O frequently points out.  This latest group may well qualify as the worst in our history!
You have spoken the truth and only those who cannot admit the mistake of voting for someone who has taken away any hope of "justice for all" as the Constitution promises, the hope for peace and the hope that he is capable of doing a good job.  Resign Bush-Cheney - or America should start the process for impeachment immediately !!!  Thank you for your wisdom and abilty to express without vulgarity the truth.
With reference to Mr. Wilson's comment, I agree that there is unacceptable behavior in both political parties.  However, it is mind-boggling to think that there can be anyone left in this country that believes in what Bush is doing and has done to this country.  He has violated the Constitution, abridged our rights granted by the Bill of Rights, aided corporations in raping the natural resources and the environment in America and countries abroad and, the most egregious blunder, was the pre-emptive strike against Iraq under false pretenses.  Impeachment is insufficient.  Bush and the rest of his cabinet should be tried as a war criminals for the death and destruction they've caused to Iraq and our soldiers, to American values, to our confidence in the government, and for turning world opinion against us.  I hope we, the people, will at last actually educate ourselves so we do not put another ninny in office.
Jeff Wilson, why don't you go "jerk off" somewhere. You're obviously beneath this blog.
This trial was all about exposing the Nazi-like propoganda used to fool the public into invading Iraq.  Commuting this sentence is akin to putting a finger into a dike and eventually this thing is going to blow.  Patriots do not walk in lock step and accept lie upon lie that is thrown our way.  It's time for the legislative branch to do its job and prosecute those who sold and are still selling this war to the public.
I am adding my comment again. I did for I did not post my full name earlier. You are the only one presents what this President has done and certainly many American people will agree.  Bravo for your courage!and Eloquence.  We DO need more voices like yours! I think there needs to be a march on Washington with everyone carrying your message of tonight and put on the White house fence.Sad for our wonderful country to have Mr. Bush as our president.
Amen. A-bloody-men. It's time for them to go - time too for the whole unholy machine that they wrought to go. There has got to be someone left to defend the Constitution this Independence Day. I hope - but I do not think - that someone will stand up.
And now Pelosi if you will get off your pinch face ass and throw away that get out of jail free no impeachment card it would be well appreciated. Can you stop playing politics with the lives of our troops not next year but by Christmas.

Do we need a new Speaker like Murtha if you can't handle the job.Did they cut a deal with you too?Personally I think he has more of what it takes.
First hand experience.I don't recall here any legends of you spending time in fox holes in San Francisco and so far you been Texas two stepping with Dubya.

If you can't do that switch parties because your just like them. No deals,no compromises, cut off the salaries of anyone who does not answer an subpoena, cut all their per diem, their travel money, legal expenses, yes that means you Rove Cheney and your Staff. This isn't hard shit.Do the right thing.

Let the VP and White House eat MRE'S till the troops come home.If the Decider wants to be Commander in Chief let him eat like the troops.
As far as I am concerned they can eat shit!

Joe and Valerie Wilson I may be poor but I am telling there is a couple bucks heading your way.
I am an American.
http://www.wilsonsupport.org/
My husband and I rose to our feet with a resounding standing ovation for today's Special Comment. Keith, your beautifully spoken words brought us close to tears. Both of us feel such a strong love for our country (my husband is a former Marine who fought in Vietnam), that to see it abused so horrendously has been tremendously painful. We have felt so alone in our outspokeness againt these criminals - that we would like to send you our heartfelt THANKS for all that you do for America!
Keith, this was just painful to see and hear.  Imus did nothing compared to your performance tonight and last night.  This is probably it for me and MSNBC.
I just had the misfortune of watching your program this evening, what a mistake......Olbermann, what a monumental ass you are.....The bluster, the righteous indignation that you so poorly presented at Bush's commutation of Libby's sentence.....You idiot, you knew, as well as everyone else, that Libby's sentence was going to be pardoned or commuted. Where were you when Clinton commuted, or pardoned. everyone but Charles Manson, and lest we forget, he's the same president that perjured himself, not only before a federal grand jury, but the nation itself......As it was discovered, the true culprit in all of this was Richard Armitage. And if there was all such a great breach of national security, then why has no one, not even the answer to all of our problems, the Democratic Congress (who now has the lowest recorded ratings in recorded history) made any attempt to go after Armitage......As ghastly as Bush and Cheney have been as a president and Vice President, only to be surpassed by the sickeningly replusive Democratic Leadership of Reid, Pelosi, Clinton and Kennedy, etal...I look past all of the aforementioned cretans and find the greatest amount of disgust with the likes of you....Your lack of  insight into everyone else's obvious, your contrived anger, your myopic viewpoints, so slanted, so biased, you discredit yourself as soon as you open your idiotic mouth...WHY DON'T YOU DO THE NATION A FAVOR AND RESIGN or just go back and screw up some sports program....
That was remarkable and brave, and I applaud your courage.  I am sure you will receive much criticism for your honesty, but never forget that, as Americans, dissent is our birthright and our obligation. I admire you very much.  Thank you.
Ft Lauderdale,Fl--I was  completely mesmerized listening to Keith's commentary about Pres. Bush.IT'S TIME TO RESIGN. Too bad we have to continue with both Bush and Cheney. Keep up  the good work and maybe the people will get to realize we definately need a chacge at the top.
Thank you.  A place in my pantheon of truth speakers is reserved for you.  You join the likes of: Bill Moyers, Josh Marshall, John Stewart, sid Blumenthal.
I hope your eloquence lights the prairie on fire!!
Come on and rise up...
Bravo on your brilliant Special Comment tonight, Keith! Unfortunately, they won't resign-they'll have to be forced out. Please make your next commentary a clarion call to Congress to initiate impeachment procedings against both Cheney and Bush immediately.

Somewhere, Ed Murrow is smiling down on you and saying "Well done, Keith !!!"
Oh.. come on now, you all know in you heart, that even if they were to be impeached tomorrow. They would just laugh it off, declare martial law, send black water to arrest the offending members of both houses, because, impeachment at a time of war warrants martial law. Just, shut up, its over. what, what are they going to do, send the national guard to evict them... dont make me laugh... its over.
Mr. Olbermann, we appreciate the force of your words and hope Congress will now act on Articles of Impeachment of Vice President Cheney and President Bush, which several Representatives and Senators have proposed.  This quotation sums up the outrage many of us are feeling.

J’accuse
Émile Zola
1898

This is the plain truth, Sir, and it is frightful.  It will leave a stain on your presidency.  I realise that you have no power over this case, and that you are limited by the Constitution and your entourage.  You have, nevertheless, your duty as a man, which you will recognise and fulfill.  Do not think that I despair of triumphing in the slightest.  I repeat with the most vehement conviction: truth is on the march, and nothing shall stop it.  Today is only the beginning for this case, since it is only today that the positions have been made clear: on one side, the guilty parties, who do not want the light to shine forth, on the other, those who seek justice and who will give their lives to see that light shine.  I have said it elsewhere and I repeat it now: when truth is buried underground, it builds up and acquires an explosive force that is destined to blast everything away with it.  We shall see whether we have set ourselves up for the most resounding of disasters, yet to come.
I WOULD BE VERY HAPPY TO SEE THE IMPEACHMENT OF PRESIDENT BUSH AND VICE PRESIDENT CHENEY. THIS ADMINISTRATION HAS DONE MORE HARM TO THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES THAN ANY ADMINISTRATION I HAVE EXPERIENCED IN MY 81 YEARS.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....
Thank you for speaking up and representing the large majority of us in this country!
Bravo, a hundred times!
Well said, and long overdue.
Your eloquent special comment served as a much needed catharsis for us like minded folks less able to articulate our heartbreak with what George and the Vice have done to this country.  Too bad neither of them will hear your words or act on your recommendation.  I thank you for the momentary venting of my wrath, fleeting though it may be.
Keith, you are beyond question, the most articulate, moving, impassioned journalist we have today.  To have one's feelings and convictions so precisely spoken, to say exactly what needs to be said about this inconceivable degree of criminality that is happening in our White House..... I am speechless....YOU...are brilliant.  Thank you.  Please don't stop speaking, and please get MSNBC more available around the country and on RADIO!!!!
Good job, Keith.  My sentiments truly.  Not that I will sleep that much better tonight - too many strong emotions.  It does hurt, watching our once-great nation be dismembered this way, our republic which we love so well.  To h**l with Libby, Cheney, Gonzales, Rove, and Bush.  To h**l with them all.
The elections of 04' captivated my attention so much that I began following additional coverage. As a newcomer to the world of politics, at then the age of 24, I remember browsing through many channels and watching many night shows. Only to realize that most of the shows and their hosts seemed to have a focused point of view and/or some sort of agenda. Yet, as an individual who is always striving for knowledge and truth I happened to come accross MSNBC. This news channel grabbed my attention out of the others, simply because I happened to come accross Hardball with Chris Matthews. Ever since then it is safe to say that I became a loyal viewer solely because of the mix variety of shows, hosts and their not so radical opinion. However, after I began to watch it on a daily basis, I came accross Countdown with Keith Olbermann. My approach to Mr. Olbermann and his consistent point of view in regards to common sense is quite profound. His way of communicating issues that are out there in our faces; yet, no one else sees them as they should has made me a true fan. Although, his entire show is not as common compared to the rest, I find it great when sense of humor can be used when applicable.  Words and messages carried out like the one tonight, reinforces my belief that one day things will come to a point where we will get tired of lies and worst yet, getting our intelligence insulted. For your points of view and your messages, I want to say thank you and, indeed, worthy of noting.
THANK YOU!
I've watch your Countdown today, July 3rd, and heard your "It's Time to Resign" demand to Bush and Cheney.

Congratulations!  I think among all the TV hosts that I've watched and listened to so far, yours is closest to my heart and mind.

I will tape it again at MSNBC TV re-run and have my sons (they were not home yet) watch it.

The online transcript, too, I have copied and saved for posterity sake.

Thank you for sharing us your thoughts to this BUSH/CHENEY/LIBBY debacle.
I’m both sad and glad, actually, sad, for this turn of events (how could they trample justice?) and glad to know that a lot of hosts and commentators share my views.

More power to you, Mr. Olbermann.

Jeffrey Wilson disagrees with Keith, but his argument consists of what we've heard from every other Bush apologist:  "But-but-but-Clinton."  This is not about Clinton.  This is about George W. Bush, who has just proven himself unfit to serve as President of the United States for even one more day -- as Keith has so eloquently expressed.
Brilliant! Enough said
Good for Keith !! He says what we think .
IMPEACH them all !!
Jeffrey Wilson, Evansville, IN

How's it feel to be a 27% that supports a rouge administration.  I bet you have a flag on your car....Sad
I did not vote for this president, and I do not consider him nor his V.P. my leaders.  They are the utmost disgrace to this country and to all of our children.  I am appalled at their absolute arrogance and disregard for the rule of law.  I absolutely believe they BOTH should be impeached NOW.  I want to the press to not let go of this, to PLEASE have the courage to go after this administration and not be afraid, imtimidated, or threatened by this administration to get some truth from them.  None of these losers are above the law as they assert themselves to be.  I am ashamed of their so-called leadership and demand that they be impeached.
