Another Mitt-stake

Posted: Monday, July 23, 2007 12:00 AM by Countdown

We're sure the item about Romney's staffer playing dress-up with the phony badges will fly under the radar of the 24 hour newscycle, the pictures shown above will not.  Honest people (Wolf Blitzer's CNN graphics) can make honest mistakes (Teddy Kennedy flubbing the name) about the unfortunate rhyming of "Osama" and "Obama".  But when it's used as a partisan punch-line or talking point (Roger Ailes takes a veiled poke at Obama) there's going to be a backlash.

TPM Cafe has comfirmed the veracity of the photos, and adds some further info and a response by the Romney Campaign.

*********UPDATE**********

Looks like Romney is not following the lead of the current President and weeding out the non-friendly audience members in his campaign stops.  Here's Mitt Romney responding to an audience question regarding said picture.

Republicans make me want to UPCHUCK!!! Yeah he's a real religious person now isn't he.. If you notice he is also holding that sign! You are so darn tootin' on the backlash!!! He's another WAR MONGER!
You know, this is just amazingly awful.

In addition, this guy wants to be president and isn't smart enough to see how badly this will come back on him?

I'd like to hear from someone who supports this man. I've done some research and can find nothing appealing much less compelling about him. What did I miss?
That is disgusting.  Shame on Mitt Romney, and I pray to God that people call him on this.  What the hell kind of person would do something like this?  Oh yeah, a racist riding on the shredded coattails of September 11, 2001.

Thank you Mitt for showing the entire world what a dumb FU*K that you really are.  You racist pig.
Anyone else notice that Momma is misspelled? It is Momma no Moma. Mom-ma not Mo-ma. But then again those are the kind of people that politicians love to get because they are quiet easy to convince of anything.
Nic, Tulsa, there is also Mama... ;) either way they did misspell it.
Is it just coincidence? or, is this man just another Bush-Cheney-Rove tactitician?  Let me see; He had someone from his campaign who wore a badge, to remove people, so they could have easier access?  I forget what preceded that one... Now, he holds a sign equating the names Obama - Osama???  Slander is slander is...
What lOw level will the Romney types stoop to?  And... he acts so innocent as if he didn't know - yah, right!
And, there was a comment from one of the bloggers about his religious affiliation - Mormon - I thought the word typed was, Moron!  Oops!  Well it looks the same to me... <weg>
What a bunch of childish little asses. Probably all went to church afterward and sang praises of some sort.
Praise Lord Dubya,Praise Lord Dick,Praise Lord Mitt,Praise Lord Rover, and Praise Lord Liar,Praise Lord Oil Money,Praise Lord you look like a bunch of stupid shits in that picture....
RE: Brenda - 'he is religious'
Mormons prefer their women stay home and have babies - what kind of President would this be, then?  A woman who is unable to attend certain functions because her husband wouldn't approve - or, pregnant so much of the time, she has no time to be a 'first lady.' Or, the FirST First Lady that has to stay home because of some 'belief system.' Or, because Hubby says so.
[Just adding a bit of the ridiculous to spice things up].
So, does this mean that Romney has no problem with equating a rival with the most wanted terrorist in United States history?

He should be ashamed of himself.
Y'all are really reaching with this one...Some lady
( she looks harmless enough ) makes a dopey sign and gets a once-in-a-lifetime photo-op with a presidential candidate.....That makes him a racist warmonger....sheesh

Pretty sure she was "just saying no" to three separate things:
Barak Obama
Osama bin Laden ( notice the two names are on separate lines - not combined, as - granted - some morons have tried to put together)
and "Chelsea's Moma" ( pretty sure the misspelling was deliberate  - you know - continuing the one "M" theme...)
Get a real story if you want to bash the guy...there must be better than this - there is on every candidate. And for some real vulgar signage - check out some anti-Bush protests. Now THERE is some expressively over-reaching crap...

Party on campers...
30yearnavyguy / one month closer to retirement than the last single post I put here....which I guess makes me a "troll"....
So is Mitt opposed to Hillary or to the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA)?

I really don't see where we need another candidate for president who has such a complete lack of common sense and good judgement coupled with a talent for the ol' flip-flop. Frankly, we have had enough of that with the current regime.
Nic, Tulsa - I saw the misspelling and I thought the very same thing.  Who else is supporting these guys except for those who are too ignorant to know any better?  If you STILL think that the republicans are the best choice to run this country, than you have got to have some kind of mental defect, or don't (or can't) read.
There's really no excuse for being anywhere near a sign like this--including being a bad speller.

How on earth is Romney going to wiggle out of this one and still come off as Mr. Virtue? To me, a candidate hasn't looked this bad since Gary Hart posed on the Monkey Business with Donna Rice on his lap.
It is probably not a mistake and will help him get the nomination. It appeals to his base and will get him elected in the general election also since they are fanatics and will be sure to vote and more than 50% of the electorate will not vote. We have rule by the fringe in this country. Nixon and Reagan said they represented the silent majority, the neocons represent the fanatic minority.
Nic says
"Anyone else notice that Momma is misspelled? It is Momma no Moma. Mom-ma not Mo-ma. "
"Momma no Moma"?

A while back some glitch in the software, or some moderator with a sense of humor took the wood Misspelled and made it appear as Misspepelled. Thats not even a physically possible typo.
I was a hair POed by that but then when I complained in my next post they closed down and did some site maintenance.
I wouldn't worry too much about dropped letters on this site.
Nic the use of one M is intentional, its to play on Sama and Bama.

Not much to get worked up about regardless. just filler to avoid speaking about real news stories like the split between the Taleban and al-Qu'ida.

I guess we'll be treated to a full page spread on every hastily scrawled sign that comes along rather than actual news stories until after the next elections.
Not that I expect much in the way of news from this site, just the same old worn out propaganda from five years ago posted as if it were newly "Researched" Data.
Good morning, everyone. Guess the "good" governor was under a rock during George Allen's senate re-election campaign for Virginia in 2006. Hence, Jim Webb is there now. Anyone know what Mr. Allen's doing these days?

I know this will come as a huge shock to you all, but coming back to work after being off for nearly 2 weeks SUCKS. &^%^$#?@!
You guys are a remarkable bunch. All of the hate spewed on this site and this upsets you ? Laughable. The fact is, those three scare the hell out of alot of people. Backlash ? , this is the way 90% of Americans feel ! No to Barak Huessein, Osama, and Hillary. Three peas in a pod. You go Mitt , let the whining begin.
Yall need to watch the debate tonight from my hometown at my alam mater. Isn't it great that the libs want to debate at a military college, where their approval rating is 0. Gotta love it ! ANd this You Tube thing, wonderful. People from around the world are submitting questions, so far out of over a billion people, we have 1800 questions submitted. And of that , 12 are from Charleston. Wow, a whole lotta interest here !  These baffoons need to take theit travelling circus back to Howard U where they are appreciated.  "W" is visiting Charleston tomorrow, much bigger crowds and a warmer welcome. The libs are crying because he is stealing their thunder. Oh well.
Actually, isn't it "Mama"?  Or can we now spell "racist" and/or misogynist and xenophobic "GOP"?
As disgusted as most Democrats (and some intelligent Republicans) will be by this childishly lettered and ridiculous sign, to many, it will be no big deal, or even be called "clever".

Why?  Because those who will think it is meaningless or clever are so blinded by their right-wing thinking, and their zealous fight to eliminate all that liberals hold true, that they will follow anyone, including slick, mealy-mouthed, flip-flopping, say-anything-to-get-elected Mitt (or any of his Republican pals, for that matter).  Did he even read the sign before he posed with this woman?

The stupidity of this woman and all those like her makes me sick.  There are still too many ignorant people in this country for me to believe that anyone other than a Christian white male can be elected president.  Sad. I was hoping this election would be a turning point to get more women, minorities, and people of differing faiths involved in decision-making in this country.
To us folks in the metropolitan NYC area . . .MOMA means Museum of Modern Art.

I didn't know Chelsea owned the Museum?

If they are too stupid to be able to spell Momma correctly, then they are too stupid to run the country -- or campaign for president.

LOL
Pam,

My ex-husband was really good at pressing my buttons, and I was really angry at myself every time I let him.  It was an amusing game (to him) -- one which he won every time.

Wayne lives in Wayne's own little world.

If you stated that the sky was blue and the grass was green and lemons were yellow -- he'd find a way to make an argument -- a nasty venomous argument.

When I see a long post, I check the author before reading.  If it's Wayne, I ignore it. You should as well.

Now I have to go back and find the list of signing statement that you posted the other day.  I want to use them to send to my Republican Representative urging him to support impeachment.  (Like that will ever happen -- but I've got to try).

On a side note, I saw the Broadway play -- Frost/Nixon on Saturday, it was excellent.  (TKTS is the best thing).  The performers got an immediate standing ovation.  The original Frost/Nixon interview is available on DVD and well worth borrowing.

Boy, is '43' repeating the mistakes of the past.

LOL
Maybe she's against Chelsea owning the Museum of Modern Art?
I got a very scary e-mail from someone regarding Obama's ties to Islam and how if he were elected, we (Americans) would have to wear burkas and how he is a terrorist lying in wait to take over our Country.  SICK stuff out there from the christian right.  They may joke about it  but they are serious,  they truly believe the crap. I know some people from TN who firmly believe he (Obama) is a threat to our Country. They always use the osama name when they talk about Obama, as if it were one in the same.  For good measure they use his middle name too.  These same people never watch the evening news or read a newspaper but get all their info from Rush. Ignorance is bliss.
Mitt is crazy for ever posing with that bigot and her sign. Guess that makes hima bigot too,  what a surprise.  What fools they both are.  I hear and see the most hateful stuff I have ever heard from people who claim to be Christians. I believe there is a special place in hell for them.
Chelsea Clinton owns the Museum Of Modern Art? That must have set her back a pretty penny.
If they had given it much thought

Function: noun
Etymology: baby talk
1 : MOTHER
2 slang : WIFE, WOMAN "

It would have worked better like that.
I am sick to death of the piddling BS that passes for debate by certain politicians. What happened to actually debating on a candidates positions on war, taxes and health care? This is important stuff. If the best these mouth-breathers can do is make fun of someone's name, a name that he was given as an infant that he had no choice in, a name that is as common as John or Michael in parts of the world, then obviously they haven't got much. But then, most people with two functioning brainc cells figured that out a long time ago. This is just so stupid! If he had changed his name at some point in the past the right would be slamming him now for trying to hide something, since he didn't, now it's an obvious sign he's a terrorist. God, these people are pathetic!

And, as an aside to the educationally challenged dolt who wrote the sign, moma is a museum in NYC, momma is a female parent.
Read Larry's post if you think you can stand to.  He says what the bigots in the south REALLY think.  As awful as it is,  he is speaking for all the bigots in the Country.  He is their spokeperson.  Some scary stuff out there folks, we need to hear it and expose it for what it really is,  TRASH.
Soon to be Navy retired guy:  Why else would someone put those two names-Osama/Obama together without the implication that they are easily interchangable?  Because they are on two 'different lines, ' doesn't change the meaning.

I've heard from people that they could never vote for Obama because it would be too easy to accidently say Osama, and they didn't want to make the mistake.  THAT is ignorant.

Regardless of what this person was implying when making the poster, Mitt Romney just showed how ignorant he is by smiling and posing holding the poster, and surely he should be aware of the implications of it.

BTW, my MIL signs her letters:  Momma
From a Repugnikant we expected ..... ?

They know they're about as welcome in America as wasps at a picnic.  Their Oil War is an endless nightmare with an escalating body count, they have destroyed our Constitution, they enable President Stupid and all his ridiculous endeavors, they are getting outed all the time as frauds and phoneys, the American people have figured out their corporate agenda, and the smell of BS has reached astronomical proportions.

Soooooo ..... they bring out the childish personal attacks, of course.  The same way 5 year olds make fun of someone's name or appearance.  Remember the "fat legs" comments about Hillary made by Ann CoulterGeist?  The Osama/Obama comments made famous on Faux Made-Up News?  The Edwards haircut sensationalism brought up by all their NeoConJob talking heads?

It's what they do for their audience of unfortunate Neaderthals.
Get a real story if you want to bash the guy...there must be better than this - there is on every candidate. And for some real vulgar signage - check out some anti-Bush protests. Now THERE is some expressively over-reaching crap... wrappingitupinoctober (Sent Monday, July 23, 2007 5:43 AM)

Hah!  Well, if in fact a Democrat or Republican Presidential candidate poses with the person who made the sign that denounces or insults the moron in the Oval Office, then you would have an arguement.  It's not the sign itself, it's the fact that Romney appears quite pleased with it-and if he didn't read the sign before posing, then he's pretty stupid.
Metronome Romney flip flopped from apparently being smart to obviously being idiotic. "Hyuk, hyuk, Obama sounds like Osama...! yeehaw!"
The GOP candidates are sad bunch of loosers. Good luck with the best candidate, "None of the above."

IMPEACH CHENEY, IMPEACH BUSH

I think MOMA in NY stands for Museum of Minute Asses. Minute as in little. I don't believe Chelsea nor Hillary would qualify ! Get a life liberals. All of the hate on here and a little fun on a sign upsets you ? I can't wait until you lose in 08 , imagine the love spewed forth then !  LOL
On another note:  Remember all the Repugnikants demanding "up or down votes" incessantly during the last session of Congress?  Well, lookie lookie who's preventing "up or down votes" now:

http://www.americanprogressaction.org/progressreport/

Their Mantra:  What Democrats do - very very very bad;  what Republicans do is holy, good, righteous, patriotic and veiled in glory.
Ladies, please do not respond to Wayne TN in any way, shape or form. I believe that women do have a right to & be able to express their opinions, however, when we return that animal's bile we are feeding his wildest dream- that of offending as many of us as he possibly can without much effort.
We can agree that he is a sexist pig & move on.

No fuel-no fire.

Says:

"Pretty sure she was "just saying no" to three separate things:
Barak Obama
Osama bin Laden ( notice the two names are on separate lines - not combined, as - granted - some morons have tried to put together)"

Hey wrappin', nice spin. nice try. doesn't matter.

The point is that any guy that is running for the highest office in the land should have read that sign, recognized the (hah!) possible misinterpretation, and dealt with that.

Mr. Romney seems, by the pictures, to have loved the sign. So - 1) he agreed with it as we understood it to say - an awful thing about Mr. Obama,  2) he agreed with it using the spin (hah!) that you provide and, yet, didn't say or do anything to ensure that everyone understood what he agreed with (meaning he didn't recognize or consider any backlash from it.), or 3) Just didn't pay attention to it all (see last statement from #2).

In none of these instances does Mr. Romney show well. Just another missed opportunity to show some class that is not limited to Mr. Romney. Just imagine how impressed we'd all be if he has said something or, even better, took a pen and corrected the damn sign. We'd all be willing to say that he showed quickness, that he showed dignity, and that he showed decisiveness all of which would have given him points. Since he did nothing, for whatever reason, he lost points. Not the kind of person I want in the executive office - we already have one of those and look at the mess he made.
OK One more before I take some kids to the museum:

http://thinkprogress.org/2007/07/23/thinkfast-july-23-2007/

News blerbs - but pay particular attention to the executive order where BushCo exerts autority to target the financial assets of any American who underminds the administrations Iraq policy AND the refusal of the administration to provide information TO A MEMBER OF CONGRESS on their plans on operating the government after a terrorist attack.

Hmmmmm, is this why BushCo is still smirking?
Wow. There is saying, those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it. Now I know that I am paraphrasing that, but give me a break. Sen. George Allen's "macaca" comment is so recent it is practically a current event. It just goes to show that Mitt Romney is like the rest of the Republican field - completely out of touch with the citizens the want to lead. But that’s the rub isn't it - the Republicans aren't looking to lead America, they seek to rule it.

Mit's new best friend is GEORGE ALLEN, who is also apparently his campaign manager!! They will have tons of time on their hands to burn crosses on lawns after this "macaca" moment!!

Ciao to his presidential bid!! What a despicable racist pig!!

PS: Nanalinda - I know...........
I see in this guy another nut case like dubya.  I couldn't even imagine him getting within spitting distance of the White House.  Where do the republicans dig these folks up!!!!
Independent, Texas (Sent Monday, July 23, 2007 1:02 PM)

Stated perfectly friend!!
Lynn, New Orleans: What is even more frustrating is that the politicans are simply playing to those in the general public who respond to this BS. As long as such people buy into the BS, the lack of specific position statements and the negative attack campaigns, the more the politicians will give them what they want. Only when a majority of the American people demand a change will a change take place. But as long as you have people who will support a person this early in the game simply because on the surface that person represents something meaningless as being a Dem or Repbulican, or other superficial and meaningless quality that defies intelligent choice, the politicians will play to this support with superficial, meaningless and negative campaigns that say a lot while saying nothing. The lady in the picture above apparently supports Romney. She certainly does not support Obama or Clinton. But why? I bet she can't even tell you why except perhaps to say that she is a Republican or that she likes Romney's graying temples. This is how Presidents are elected and these are the people who elect them (on both sides). And then we wonder why candidates won't supply more specific position statements and less garbage coming out of their campaigns. The fault lies not with the politicians but with the American people. The politicians are just the dogs who have been conditioned to salivate when they see hords of voters like the lady above. As it appears to me (to date) the Dem who can do his/her best bashing Bush might get elected while on the Republican side the candidate who can do their best tearing apart Obama or Clinton might get elected. But what does that tell you of the candidates themselves, their positions and their ability to run this country, nothing! And because the Republicans are the very best at the tearing apart bashing game watch for a very tight race in 08 even if many people vote strictly Dem as a vote against Bush.

In the end our political system has become outrageously infantile, corrupt and responsive to what many American people respond too including those who would vote strict party lines on this blog. Nationalism and great pride in the country have given way to self-serving, enthnocentric American Idol style immaturity. The country, its natural beauty,  resources and history remains great in my mind, but the people who represent the country today including the general public really do suck. Their maturity has not been able to appreciate or to keep up with the maturity and greatness of the country they live in. Give them a candidate who promises them kool-aide in all the drinking fountains and they'll vote for them.
Nanalinda, San Antonio, TX (Sent Monday, July 23, 2007 12:57 PM)

I promised you on an earlier thread I would no longer be responding to Wayne.  He’s a sick man.  I also want to thank you so much for concern.  Yes, I have been naive; and I also find it very sad that "we" have to disguise ourselves for fear of backlash.

You are correct; however, I am ONE SAD PERSON, as I have come to the realization that in the year 2007, we "still" have to be afraid of our First Amendment rights!!

God Bless friend!!
Independent, there is no misinterpretation - America is saying NO to Barak Huessein Obama , Osama Bin Laden. and Mrs. Bill Clinton.WHAT ABOUT THAT DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND. Is every liberal, I mean progressive, a moron ?
Can anyone tell me if this Larry guy from Charleston SC is even old enough to post on blogs? Everything he says is very immature, the language quite juvenile. All of it name-calling, not one post is of any substance. I'm concerned, MSNBC should look into this. I believe he's really some 11 year old kid playing on his Mommy's (or 'Moma's) computer.
Rush Limbaugh has been calling Barack Obama "Osama Obama" or "Obama Osama" for a while now. I'm as liable to believe that she's just repeating a talking point as that she just misplaced a comma.

I am with her, however - against the MoMA. I prefer the ancient Greek and Roman concept of art to the "art" of sticking three Barbie heads on a trashcan lid. (Yes, that's an actual piece I saw at a modern art gallery in Houston. Definitely NOT art.) Just me, though. I go to the Met instead. :)
I remember when Bill Clinton visited the Twin Towers after 911. What was left of them, anyway. It was then, I felt someone with reason and intelligence was finally comforting and supporting, the people most affected by the attacks. Mostly, the people who died in the Twin Towers, their families and friends, and the rest of us.
President Clinton, may have been out of power but he soothed my fears and have me hope.
Hillary has had her moments with Bill but I feel she will lead this nation back to a position of honor and respect.
I did not agree with her vote for the war. I think she voted for the war, because it was the politically right thing to do. I hope she stops thinking about the party and starts thinking about the whole country.
I love America. I love this earth. I want us to use detante and reason to settle this horrid fighting.
I am middle class. I have no doubt, I could meet with my counterpart in opposing nations and work out a non-lethal way to find peace.
We need to extend our hands to one another.
The enemy is hatred and mistrust. Thank you Keith for your "special comments." You have been right on target and have expressed the feeling and beliefs, of the majority if Americans.
Apparently the sign maker is a Dittohead and listens faithfully to Rush Limbaugh.  He started interchanging Osama-Obama on his radio program a while ago.  How original.  Funny?  He won't be laughing in '08.
Larry: The fact is most Americans do not want any of the current candidates, Dem or Republican and are fed up with the entire poliitical process including the current administration and Dem controled congress. Are all those to the left supporting a current Dem candidate and those to the right supporting a current Republican candidate really morons? If one looks at the current candididates from both parties one would have to conclude that they are. Do you support a current Republican candidate Larry?

That's all I'll say about the guy-his posts speak for themselves.
