Another Mitt-stake

Posted: Monday, July 23, 2007 12:00 AM by Countdown

We're sure the item about Romney's staffer playing dress-up with the phony badges will fly under the radar of the 24 hour newscycle, the pictures shown above will not.  Honest people (Wolf Blitzer's CNN graphics) can make honest mistakes (Teddy Kennedy flubbing the name) about the unfortunate rhyming of "Osama" and "Obama".  But when it's used as a partisan punch-line or talking point (Roger Ailes takes a veiled poke at Obama) there's going to be a backlash.

TPM Cafe has comfirmed the veracity of the photos, and adds some further info and a response by the Romney Campaign.

*********UPDATE**********

Looks like Romney is not following the lead of the current President and weeding out the non-friendly audience members in his campaign stops.  Here's Mitt Romney responding to an audience question regarding said picture.

Wow!  Y'all make the biggest of deals over the littlest of things.  It must have something to do with low intellect.
Go to www.buckeyestateblog.com and email jerid@buckeyestateblog.com he is a friend of mine, he is the one who asked the question, and also got romney to sign a copy of the photo. you should talk to him on tv tonight.
J.Novak , Cleveland - unfortunately I am old enough. Old enough to remember the jungles of Viet Nam, the lying of LBJ and Robert McNamara, the way the liberals treated us after the war and now the way the liberals are treating our troops in harms way. Obviously you choose to ignore the hatred and filth put forth by the likes of Pam, Jamie, and Sue. You, my friend , are a hipocrit. I dispute every piece of crap that is posted here, and agree with some. But hte fact is there is so much hate on this sight that you are blinded. You are a whore to the likes of Pam. Get real and look at the facts, liberalism is dead. Watch the debate tonight and it will be confirmed. And I hope they show outside the debate, the signs you see will be much funnier than the one posted here.

Hey guy! Where you been?
Watching the YouTube clip really gave me a good idea of what Mitt would be like in the WH. Right,  he would always be right.  Whatever crowd he was in when it was recorded was sure on his side.  He comes across as very angry and very dim and not at all concerned that he distance himself with the clear message on that ignorant sign he held up. He made mention of not reading all the signs , shirts, buttons etc...that are on/held up by the people he has his picture taken with. A real intelligent move for a person running for the highest office in the land. Reminds me a bit of good ole dubya,  at least in the intelligence department.  I bet he has a jump in the polls,  republicans love a dimwit.   He's a scary one, that's for sure.
I love it on the video above how he tries to explain it by saying that he "doesn't look at every sign".

Perhaps before endorsing things, you may want to take a look at said thing first?

Our last president must not have looked at every intelligence report, and we ended up in a war...

Don't you think if you want to be president you should at least prove to the American people that you are capable of paying attention to the things that you stand behind, display, represent, encourage or endorse?

Oh, and Larry from SC, regarding your post, lemme dig up the quote....Timestamped. ^_^

(Sent Monday, July 23, 2007 8:43 AM)

"You guys are a remarkable bunch. All of the hate spewed on this site and this upsets you ? Laughable. The fact is, those three scare the hell out of alot of people. Backlash ? , this is the way 90% of Americans feel ! No to Barak Huessein, Osama, and Hillary. Three peas in a pod. You go Mitt , let the whining begin."

If this were true, could you explain to me why the both Barak Obama and Hillary Clinton are effectively pwning the entire field of Republicans running? Last I checked, Obama and Clinton have a campaign donation rate that is setting records.

90% of Americans? You sir must live in the 51st state. The State of Denial. GOPers can't even agree on who they want for their own party, so I doubt you could get 90% of Americans to blindly agree to such a statement. Are you insinuating that Americans blindly follow ideas around like sheep? I, for one am insulted. For The old news on the never-right wing's difficulty in coming to a consensus, check these links (Faux News also included so as to avoid any appearance of bias, which is always hard to do when Fox Noise is involved)

Thanks once again for using your amazing psychic powers to inform me of the thoughts of 9/10ths of the entire nation. You make me giggle, but only on the inside. Your presumptions sir are truly flabbergasting.

That post offended me to my core, and I'm sorry but I had to address it.

Back on topic. It really is unfortunate that his name is even an issue. Most americans don't have a first or a last name that is of "Pure American" origin. There is no such thing. We are a country of immigrants. Does that make a person with a scottish, british, or even arabic derived name less American? Certainly not. It simply means that their family struggled to come to America from another country. To me, that speaks not against their "Americanism" if you will, but for it.

You would be an arrogant, bigoted, pompous fool if you believe that an arabic derived name has any kind of negative effect on an individual. When you do that, you judge not only that person, but the religion of Islam (which on a whole isn't extremist), the arabic language, and that person's ancestry.

(That goes for your use of Hussein too Larry. Don't think I missed your point. ^.~)

Racism and ethic bigotry should have no place in our elections other than universal condemnation of such concepts. But for that to happen, the people who use such remarks need to accept that they are racists and bigots. Acceptance of a problem is the first step to finding a solution to it.

Alas, our government doesn't seem capable of accepting its mistakes, both past and present. That also seems to apply for our republican presidential hopefuls.
Not everyone living in Dixie is as impressed with Larry's blowhole by-products as he himself apparently is - really, it's hard for me to believe the guy is actually what he says he is .... or at least, implies - that is a graduate of the Citadel and a retired USAF LTC .... I seem to remember officers from my USAF days 40 years ago as having infinitely more character than Larry displays on his daily posts of late - he is apparently escalating in his bilious hatred, general nastiness, and all-around brainless behavior.  Watch out for a stroke old fellow!  All in all, not very impressive Larry, if you're tuned in.  You're giving your 'Alma Mater' a bad name.  I've been to Charleston plenty of times and you'd never know Larry actually lived there without his daily pronouncements.

No 'Larry' billboards or anything like that - so in spite of Larry, Charleston is a very pleasant place indeed and steeped in history as we all know.  Larry is going to be surprised at the results of the South Carolina primaries I do believe - I mean really!!  Who do you like Larry?  Mitt or Rudi??  The worst democrat that ever walked or crawled is still preferrable to these brainless, uber-rich dolts and in your puny little heart you know it to be true.

But get going now - you should be standing outside the gates of the Citadel protesting with all your might - unfortunately for you the new leaders for '08 have already stormed those very gates....pretty clever don't you think??

As one of the final and fast-fading Bush defenders you've got to be looking in the mirror, scratching your head & wailing "where oh where did we go wrong?" - and you'd be be looking at the problem.
C.A. , he can't answer your question because David Duke isn't running.

Larry's Amerikkka is not ready for a female or black president. Like Crazy Larry's stressing of the name "Huessein", the sign injects fear into pea brains and the ditto heads by association.

Lieutenant Colonel? Riiiight. Its sad really. He just sits in here all day insulting everyone and hating. good times, Larry, good times.
I'm disturbed by Romney's statement that he doesn't stand for all the things he has his picture taken with.  So aside from being an idiot he's also a camera whore?
Larry is an excellent example of the simplistic but very true addage: MEAN PEOPLE SUCK

I kept this all very simple so that Larry could read and understand my post. Talk about blinded by hate!! I almost feel sorry for the man..but not quite.
Hey Terry from Columbia, SC you have restored my faith in your state.  Thank you.
Larry I did watch and I heard alot of clapping from alot of the people there.. oops.. maybe there is a majority there that agreed with them? They loved what most of them said.. but there being a "screened" YouTube questions was no different than any other debate!
Here is the debate from CNN if any of you wish to watch..

Looks like Mitt's father's brainwashing seeped down the family tree. His brain is so wet from the brainwashing that he is now a champion flip-flopper.  Doesn't even have the decency that John Kerry had when he admitted he was "for it before he was against it."  He just denies he was ever for whatever before the "Nazi Christians" as my kids call them, got hold of him and "converted" him to their way of thinking.
The so-called Christian-right wants to turn our country into a supposedly Christian version of Iran/Iraq/Saudi Arabia where the state and religion are one and the same.
No thanks no Romney for this gal. I suffered through his father's governorship and that was bad enough.

"No to Obama, Osama, & Chelsea's Momma." That's a great bumper sticker, send me ten of them.

The '04 sticker on my red neck pick-up truck is out of date anyway. It says...
     "Moore-Hussein for Pres.'04"

AKA (Documenting daily the fact that Michael Savage is right...Liberalism IS a mental disorder)
Re: Romney, according to wikipedia he avoided serving in Viet Nam by going to france for a couple years. I wonder, if someone was to dig deep enough would they also find that he claimed conscientious objector status as mormons often do? If that turned out to be the case how would that effect his potential ability to be Commander in Chief of the armed forces?
Larry from Charleston - well maybe you are old enough to be blogging here...you misspelled 'hypocrite' and most kids these days are savvy enough to use the internet to look up the correct way to spell words.

Of course this being the internet, I am also suspect of dubious claims of having served here or there and experienced mythical stereotypical 'liberal' attacks as a result of serving in Vietnam. The rumored 'spitting incident' has been proven to also be dubious. And there is no proof it was only 'liberals' that protested that war. The draft sparked the protests by students and their parents who didn't want to see their kids shoved into a win-less meatgrinder.

And every Neocon that is serving in your beloved Administration received rich kid deferments so they could get out of Vietnam. And not one of those has a kid serving now in Iraq. So even if you did serve in Vietnam, you defend cowards who refused to themselves.

But, regardless, your maturity level is pretty much as I described. Like a child you accuse those who disagree with you of being guilty of your own shortcomings. You are the only person I've seen on this board spreading hatred rather than debate the issues.
First of all, right on to the guy that called out Mitt with his question in the video. Who is he kidding with that answer that he doesnt look at the signs before he takes a picture with them? He really needs to reevaluate his staff if they let him run around all willy nilly taking random photos without reading the signs. On second thought, no he doesn't because he is doing all of our work for us in regards to showing what a moron he is!

What does anyone's name have to do with how they are going to run this country? It pisses me off every time because it takes away from the real message and the real issues.

Obama '08!!!!
" The rumored 'spitting incident' has been proven to also be dubious"
First person accounts of Anti-War Protestors spitting on Vietnam veterans.
http://newsbusters.org/node/10594

Its been a long time but I remember at least one such incident being caught on film and shown on the evening news.
"win-less meatgrinder"
According to the Vietnamese Communist Government officials the US would have won the War by 1970 if it were not for the American Anti-War protestors who encouraged them to hold on.
Its estimated that US Anti-War Movement cost the lives of at least 20,000 US troops and the horriffic loses of South Vietnamese Civilians as well as ARVN troops can't really be calculated.
J Novak, let's debate. You pick the issue, I'll defend "W" and you defend Hillary. Look forard to hearing from you.
Dennis, no effect , see Bill Clinton. Ran to Eurpoe to protest. No consequence whatsoever.
Brenda, not much applause for a place packed with only liberals, you had to be disappointed. In fact , the whole debate was an embarassment. Actually I was at dinner with a lot of democtats and they too were disappointed. Not one leader on that stage, except Joe Biden, he actually tried to tell the truth. Not what the liberals wanted to hear. The fact is the questions they picked were lame and we still could not get a straight answer. Good luck in 08, you gonna need it !
He needs to drop out of the race.  He continually makes a fool of himself and is wasting everyones time, not to mention money.  What a joke.  If we ever stooped this low as a nation and elected a sh#thole like this I think I would move.  Oops, we already did.  Twice.  Hmmm, maybe Romney stands a chance.
Waiting for October guy: Better hope you aren't counting on your PENSION to be safe, if another Republican President gets elected!! Ask the poor dumb ENRON & WORLDCOM employees, the "working stiff" honest, loyal lifelong workers who were SHAFTED & lost their PENSIONS & saw all their company STOCK fall to pennies on the $$. Mitt ROMNEY is just another good ole' Republican who represents the residents of NEW RICHISTAN, not you.  Don't continue to be a sucker.

Pres. Bush's good ole' homeboy, "Kennyboy" Lay.
Terry, Columbia - wishful thinking pal. I didn't get into the debate because I'm obviously not gay, lesbian, transgender; nor am I black or a liberal woman. That being said, the response of the people was not that receptive. 3000 questions worldwide, 12 from Charleston ? Not much interest shown here. The people down here simply don't accept that we are defeatist and will walk away from the war on terror. The people at Charleston Air Force Base cretainly don't believe it. There is an overwhelming response to his visit today. Now maybe the people at Ft Jackson are ready to quit, I doubt it. The liberals I saw yesterday were still afraid to call themselves liberals. Why ? Because even they know liberalism is dead. Hillary can call herself a progressive all she wants, the people of SC won't be fooled. The Republican Party is alive and well in SC and across America. The liberals simply don't have a clue , no ideas , no solutions , no suggestions. So MoveOn over and let the GOP lead the way.
It was not only inappropriate decision that Mitt made, posing for this picture, but also an inappropriate decision by the media to publish it.
Larry you nutbar.

Paraphrasing Kurt Vonnegut, if you support invading a country that did not attack America just so you can feel more secure, why don't you take a shotgun and blow the heads off all your neighbors who you suspect of being armed? It's the same principle.

Where do people like Larry think the liberals, the "terrorists", the worshippers of a different kind of mythical grandfather in the sky, should go?

There's only one planet Earth. There is no place else for you to send everyone who doesn't agree with you, look like you, act like you, or genuflect like you!

The sooner we all start learning how to be good to each other, the better it will be for everyone. Larry, you have a lot of work to do in this regard.

Keep up the good work though, Larry! You're as nutty and unhinged as ever! Keep showing the world that Republicans are lunatics! You're better and definitely cheaper than several million dollars' worth of Democratic TV ads!
So Larry...You attempted to tackle everybody else.

How about coming back around to answer my question sir?

Of course as you said-

"I didn't get into the debate because I'm obviously not gay, lesbian, transgender; nor am I black or a liberal woman."

Correct sir, you are a troll. A right-wing troll who when addressed with their own false statements picks and chooses their battles. You sit here only to provoke people with your false statements, and when confronted you cower sir, only to make more lies.

The only thing the GOP leads is, unfortunately folks who don't take the time to learn the facts. Sheep.

I notice that under the "please read" section before posting, it states "We will only approve comments that are directly related to the blog, use appropriate language and are not attacking the comments of others."

Can we punt this troll so everybody else can move on? All his posts start with a flame, and I'm sure many folks here are tired of Larry spouting misinformation. I realize that I am also in fact "attacking the comments" of Larry, but those who insult and demean others while spouting propaganda for their own political party need to have an admin address their posts. Larry serves to add no constructive thought to any of the discussion here at the N-hole, but rather drags what should be a community of people -appropriately- discussing these topics instead of trolling to incite a flame war.

I apologize I even got sucked into this flame war mess. But it's time for the admins to either address this issue with a post, or stick to the rules of the board and no longer allow Larry to use such inflammatory remarks.

(Sidenote, I apologize Terry, I spent some time in York and you are correct, Charleston minus Larry isn't all that bad. I should not judge a whole city on one of it's citizens lack of maturity. That was my mistake.)
Wayne from TN...a link to Newsbusters? Ha ha ha hee hee hee! You might as well linked to a Faux News or the Washington Times or some other Neocon propaganda outfit!!!! Thanks for the laugh!

Here's a piece from an article about the urban myth of anti-war protestors spitting on Nam Vets with a link to the article from Slate Magazine. Turns out a guy researched this myth and wrote a book about it:

"Lembcke uncovered a whole lot of spitting from the war years, but the published accounts always put the antiwar protester on the receiving side of a blast from a pro-Vietnam counterprotester. Surely, he contends, the news pages would have given equal treatment to a story about serviceman getting the treatment. Then why no stories in the newspaper morgues, he asks?"

http://www.slate.com/id/1005224/

To Larry from SC....I'm not going to defend Hillary, she's not my preferred candidate. I like Edwards, his universal healthcare proposal is the best.

And I'll debate you on Edwards with one caveat...no superficial ad hominem crap about haircuts and big houses. I believe it is possible for people from humble beginnings that achieve wealth can be sincere in their passion to help those who are less fortunate. And rich liberals are entitled to enjoy their own wealth as much as rich conservatives.

So, I'll debate you on their stances on the issues and performance as politicians only. I'm not here for simple name calling and to read a laundry list of immature GOP sing-songy bumpersticker talking point nonsense. No substance, no debate.
“but those who insult and demean others while spouting propaganda for their own political party need to have an admin address their posts”

LOL… If this were strictly adhered to the only ones left would be those of us on the conservative side.  The left has nothing but propaganda to point to, and are too indoctrinated in their beliefs to even begin understanding reality.

If you'd even looked at the information and links on the site I linked to you'd know that Lembke has been debunked long ago.
http://volokh.com/posts/1170519427.shtml

Anti War protestors made a habit of spitting on Police and National Guardsmen during protests , trying to ignite a riot, they also spit on many Veterans in Uniform most such incidents no doubt went un reported so far as getting into the newspapers.
