Ok, I'm Not "One of Them"

From the AP:

Giuliani says he misspoke when he compared his exposure to ground zero workers

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani is backing off comments he made that struck a nerve with some of ground zero's first responders.

Giuliani says he misspoke when he claimed he spent as much time, if not more, at the site and was exposed to the same health risks as workers.

The former New York mayor told reporters yesterday he "was there working with" police and firefighters.

The backlash was swift, with one firefighter saying Giuliani was grasping to "portray himself as the hero of 9/11."

Giuliani told radio host Mike Gallagher he was trying to empathize with them and tell them "I'm there with you."

A deputy fire chief, who spent months digging for his son at the site called Giuliani a liar and said "the only time he was down there was for photo ops."

Thay's not true. The Mayor was down there everyday all day and most of the night for at least the first two weeks working out his mobile command trailer, However I do remember that the only time that i saw the gov or either senators is right around time the president showed up.
This comes as no surprise to any one in the NY metropolitan area.

Before 9/11, he was being caricatured as Hitler, enough said.
Giuliani has made it clear he is not breathing the same air as most Americans, let alone the *true* First Responders. This is one time when folks out in "the boonies" should be paying attention to what New Yorkers have to say on the subject. They KNOW Rudy.
Giuliani was only there for photo ops. He's a liar.
No surprise - he's known as a serial liar.
I'll believe Guiliani is just like the first responders when he has to go to Cuba for health care.
Don't worry, Niels (6:34 pm post). I'm "out in the boonies," and I'm paying attention and spreading the word,
Rudy, Rudy, Rudy!  Dude, I told you before and I tell you again:  The coattails of September 11, 2001 have been shredded to pieces by Bush & Co.  There is nothing left, so you might want to move on to some other platform to run on.

Since Abortion rights, same sex marriages, and your area of expertise-family values-have gone out the window, you better start shopping.

I heard some rumors about WMD being in a place called Iraq-maybe you should try that as your new motto.  What the hell have you got to lose anyway???????
How come no one likes the Jewel He has great taste in young women!
Nice post Jamie!! Guiliani didn't do any thing that any other mayor or public servant would have done.
Listening to Giuliani talk about being at Ground Zero as much if not more that the recovery workers gives me the same nauseated feeling that I got when I saw George Bush on the flight deck of the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln in a flight suit. Mission Accomplished, Rudy. Once again, you've shown America the side of you that New York has come to know and revile.
As a firefighter, I lost 343 brothers that day. What really upsets me is the politicans trying to win votes by cashing in on that day. Bush in 2004 used the image a flag draped casket carrying a firefighter from ground zero in a tv ad, yet he has consistently cut funding for first responders. Giuliani has positioned himself as THE hero at 9/11 and while he did a good job at first his promises were not followed through on. For example, he said the rescue workers could keep digging until all people were found but yet, called off the digging and instead called in the shovels and heavy equipment and shipped it off to landfills (but oh yeah, the rescue workers could sift through the scooped up debris) and then all the volunteers who responded to this event, showing what is best with America, now the insurance agencies and government have turned their back on them (does this remind anyone else about has been done to our soldiers?). It makes me sick how politicians, and I'm talking BOTH democrat and republican, will take a tragedy and turn it into a campaign blip. I'm sure all the Americans who died on 9/11 would be glad to know that their deaths were used to start a war against a country that had nothing to do with the attacks and we're still buddy buddy with the country that most of the terrorists came from, and also they have become campaign fodder. It is a shame
Afraid of Rudy ? The libs ought to be , Hillary can't carry his water. Keep up the publicity, the more you try to degrade him the stronger he looks.
One more sound bite to chronicle in the Age of Delusion.  Every time he opens his mouth he seems more like some cartoon character.

Maybe Rudy can apply for some federal bucks and open up a little bagel joint on the Upper East Side.

Ciao Luigi! Amico, non abbiamo bisogno di 'degradiamo 'Guiliani, poichè fa quel pozzo tutto di lavoro sui suoi propri. Buona notte!

I may not spell this right, but I heard it a lot while living in bella Italia, and it's something that I'd like to ask Guiliani, Bush, etc., everytime they open their mouths:  Che Fa?
Luigi, are you serious?  There comes a time when reality sets in right?  I guess for you it hasn't happened yet.

Guiliani is using a national tragedy as a campaign slogan, and those who were affected directly by 9/11 rail against him.  What does that tell you?

Wake up!!!!
Brian - well said.  And those firefighters in New York are using the SAME RADIOS that failed during 9/11, which were the SAME RADIOS that failed in the first WTC attack.  Billions and billions of tax dollars have been wasted on pork projects through Homeland Security and not a penny on communications!

And for all of you that talk about how Rudy showed up at Ground Zero every day - where else was he supposed to go?  He went where the cameras were so his puss would show up on the TV Machine - or maybe it was to visit the remains of the real Command Center which was underneath the rubble after he stupidly put it in the WTC despite the first attack and continuing security threats of more attacks.

He's a fraud and phoney and should take the millions of dollars he's personally earned from the tragedy and fade from public view.  Nice one Rudy - Ground Zero volunteers can't get health care and you become a multi-millionaire presidential candiate.  Heckofajob.
I'm with Brian Craft on this one. I'm sick of 9/11 being used as political "cash". It is appalling to me that Rudy's ENTIRE campaign is based on 9/11 and terrorism fear mongering while promoting that the U.S. should continue the failed Bush strategy in Iraq. Rudy has given no real answers to any domestic issues and just keeps beating the 9/11 wardrum. Rudy benefited from 9/11 - as sad as that statement is - because before those horrific attacks he was nothing but tabloid fodder and nearly universally disliked by New Yorkers. I can't say I ever heard anything favorable about him until after 9/11, and even since then it's been a VERY mixed bag.

As the front runner Republican, all I can say is, "is this all the party has to offer?" Have they learned nothing? While everyone else in the GOP pretends to try to separate themselves from the Bush Administration, Rudy's answers to how he would handle existing problems make him appear to be a direct Bush understudy.
Misspoke, my ass.  Call it like it is.  He lied and he got caught doing it.  What a loser.  And what a bunch of losers that think he should be our next president.  Have you learned nothing from the consequences of voting for the current Loser in Chief?
Call me old fashioned, but there is no way I can trust any man you cheated and lied to two wives and is now on his third. And that goes for Newtie Boy.
And I sure don't want either of their wives representing this country. Yes, the spouses of a President does matter to me. And that leaves me in a quandry, because I do not want Mitt Romney in the White House either.
While none of us are without fault, I do expect the POTUS to be a person of honesty and integrity.
Well, if "Rude Dude" gets the Republican nomination, it should be very interesting to watch the election results from New York (both city and state) next year and see just how much support "the hero of 9/11" gets from the people who know him best.
This is the same man that immediately at the beginning had at least a hospital mask on along with people around him, while the others had nothing seems he already knew about the risks the others did not. They didn't warn those workers about the Asbestos that was in those buildings. Larry Silverstein who had leased the WTC in January 2001 before they were hit, knew about the asbestos problem and a billion dollars or more to remove it.. The man made over 7 billion dollars on his 3.2 billion investment.. not bad is it??
Giuliani says he "misspoke"; to this he can now add:  making the largest understatement of the year (that would be . . . saying that he misspoke). From the beginning it's been no secret that his high profile, post-9/11, was to be the main selling point of his campaign. He's the candidate most qualified to keep us safe, remember? Even though the only thing he really did on 9/11 was react with determination after the fact . . . an important quality, to be sure, for a leader to have, but it's not really proof that he can protect us beforehand, is it? And now, in an effort to stress how critical his work was back then, he overstates it, insulting the very people he was supporting and praising at the time.

Candidates are human too, and they should be allowed some misstatements (Biden calling Obama "clean and articulate"; dumb remark but not a disqualifying one); however, it should probably be a case of "forgive but never forget". Rudy doesn't really believe that he did more than the rescuers on 9/11; at the same time, he is not above pushing the limit when invoking his work on 9/11 as proof that he can keep us safe in the future.

Prediction: At some point before the GOP convention he will slip-up and say something along the lines of: "Who do you want to have in-charge the next time there's an attack?" While it may be realistic to assume that there will be another successful attack one day, Rudy has been careful, so far, to frame his message as "I'll prevent another attack before it occurs". If he feels enough pressure don't be surprised when he takes the extreme fear-mongering route.
I am a student at Fremont High School and I am doing a project on Rudy Giuliani. I believe that the 9-11 incident was the main selling point for his campaign. He was bragging about being one of the firefighters and working more than them, you only used to see him where the cameras were. Ground Zero volunteers can't get health care and you becaome a multi-millionare presidenatial candidate good one Rudy.

Isn't Rudy claiming to be a terrorist expert because he was "on the ground " for 9/11 kinda like giving a security guard a raise and promotion because he was on duty when the bank was robbed.
