Feats of Clay

Posted: Monday, August 27, 2007 11:00 PM by Countdown

According to published reports today, President Bush is considering nominating Clay Johnson to replace Michael Chertoff as Secretary of Homeland Security.

Mr. Johnson has no experience in law enforcement, the law, the military, counter-terrorism or intelligence. His current job involves oversight of management throughout the executive branch. Prior to that, he served during the Bush/Cheney transition by helping Mr. Bush to staff thousands of federal positions.

He served much the same role when Mr. Bush became governor, and then served as Mr. Bush's chief of staff. You can read his official government bio here.

Mr. Johnson does not appear to have any blemishes of ethics or competence on his public record. (That line was written before we stumbled upon this.)  Privately, he has worked as an executive in the mail-order catalogue business, as well as for Pepsico. Specifically, Frito-Lay, a maker of fine snack chips.

To his credit, Frito-Lay has suffered not a single attack by al Qaeda.

His relationship with Mr. Bush is almost unique in Washington. The two men have been friends since they were 15 and met at Andover.

He recalls discussing Vietnam with Mr. Bush. Not the morality of it. That was "almost moot," he told the Associated Press. Their concern was getting out of the draft.

More to come, we suspect. Post your own links on Mr. Johnson's golden oldies. His role as personnel chief for Bush over the years could yield some interesting connections.

Anyone taking on the position of Attorney General with the Bush Administration at this point could be likened to a passenger in a lifeboat asking for permission to come aboard the Titanic just before it disappears beneath the waves.
Delighted Gonzalez is going.  That said, let's discuss why no opportunity to comment on the Vick issue is offered here tonight.  I listened to Keith's comment and I read it just now and I still don't understand why he wants Vick back in football.  The guy deserves to spend the rest of his life cleaning up at an animal shelter...under close supervision, of course.  The beaten spouse analogy doesn't work...spouses can sue, drunk-driver survivors can sue, but dogs can't sue.  They can't even complain.  And no, I'm not a PETA member, just a member of the human race.
A loyal Bushie! ThinkProgress had some good stuff on him earlier today -- he has a Bush doll on his desk!

http://thinkprogress.org/2007/08/27/clay-johnson-dhs/
I think M. Vick's statements only underscore his lack of honesty. Keith feels Vicj has performed his contrition, but why has no one taken him to task for how he worded it? "I was immature...did things that were immature"...Immature!!! No Vick, immature is tagging someone's property, egging someone, or blowing up mail boxes. Making dogs fight to the death for entertainment. pleasure, and profit is nowhere close to being immature. Its plain & simple, criminal. This wasn't an act of contrition but a PR spin to make him sound like a good guy that just did something a little naughty. Com'on Keith, you don't let others get away with their spin, so why Vick? Is it because its sports? This guy is only sorry he got busted, and now he's found Jesus? Anything else his lawyers coached him on? Gotta work on that sympathy angle for the judge & the public.
Your standards are too high if you think that using corporate influence to get regulators hired is either unethical or incompetent.  Sounds about right for nowadays.  Heck, with those political patronage credentials, he's ready for attorney general, not Homeland Security. Who cares that he isn't a lawyer?  Didn't matter in Gonzo's case.
Yeah, yeah-one more big surprise of nepotism within the political world-the Bush political world.

On another note:  Can you believe that M*A*S*H* is 35 YEARS OLD?  Crikey, they're showing the very sad, very last episode of the program-cried my eyes when I was a little girl when it first aired.

Hmmmm, I wonder if people will cry 30 years from now when watching stories about Iraq?????
Yes pepsico hasn't had nothing to fear with Clay on the job :P
Well, with this statement:

"Mr. Johnson has no experience in law enforcement, the law, the military, counter-terrorism or intelligence."

Bush just keeps his record going just like with Mike Brown and his Arabian Horse before FEMA in the mold of appointing people who are in no way qualified for their jobs.

Ugh.
How can you be Attorney General if you're not an attorney? At least Gonzo had a law degree.
Holy Sh*t!  Is there anything else we should know about all the Bush buddies????

Michael Moore seemed to have actually tapped into something we should have paid more attention to, in his Documentary: "Farenheit 9/11" - when Bush referred to all his friends as his power, or money "base."  If I recollect, correctly.

Once again... "It's a fine mess you got us into Ollie."

Anyone here have the insider view of this p.Residents history - and, ya wanna share it with the rest of us, so we know what is coming next? @#$^&*+_

And, Chertoff as the possible A.G.???  Didn't he mess up badly enough, already?  Katrina is still very fresh in the minds of many... Or, did he simply "pass the buck" onto his buddy 'Brown'?

It is simply overwhelming some days as this administration continues to shock and dull so many with their on again, off again, policies.

What better way to distract, and discharge more illicit operations, than to keep the American People off balance!

Yet another thought, regarding the bushWhacker!
It strikes me as pathetic and manipulative that his cronies actually refuse Bush the 'sight' and 'sounds' of the many protesters which confront his silly self.

I suppose as long as he feels safe from the angst and anger of his NOT so adoring public, he can continue to believe he is doing something of value.  Duh... like believing he is really well liked, and doing a great job.  He admittedly doesn't read the papers, doesn't watch television, and evidently is getting his "press" only from the gleaned and cleaned publications - screened for his eyes only.  Do ya s'pose there is a method to the madness?
Qualifications for a Bush appointee: Known him for a long time; politically the same (not similar . . . the SAME); familiar with the terms "deny" and "obfuscate"; understand that as a "public servant" you work for . . . the President; know where the delete key is on the computer keyboard; are prepared to blame the media and the Democrats for YOUR failures; are less loyal toward him than he is toward you; are oblivious to writing on the wall; can clearly pronounce "I don't recall"; know how to pass the buck to an underling; when all else fails, willing to fall on a sword.
The pool of people willing to pledge unfailing loyalty to 43, push the neo-con agenda without a second thought, then throw themselves under the bus is getting smaller. That is what you get when you limit your hiring options to folks on your Christmas card list. Pretty soon the White House won't be able to field a softball team, let alone run a country.
No experience in the job at hand -- no law enforcement experience, no judicial experience. Nothing in his resume to presume he could do the job at hand. But he's got a long history and relationship with Dubya... and, apparently, past experience with a fine upstanding guy like Ken Lay.

Oh, he's _perfect_! I mean, loyalty to the President is all that matters, right? He might not even take that "oath to the President" Monica II talked about...

I think these people have taken the attitude of a senior in the last few months of high school: It's almost over, so we don't _have_ to care...
Great pic of Bush in the golf cart. It's nice to see he's always capable of having a good time. Doesn't seem to let a whole lot really bother him. Seems to easily let the world's insanity roll off his shoulder.
Good for him.
Well, can he be ALL BAD if he helped bring nacho cheese Doritos to the nation?! I THINK NOT! Military or law enforcement experience be darned! GW's administration mightily proves that you need not be qualified to serve.
A person with good management skills, the ability to listen, the ability to chose excellent people to work under him/her, and the ability to provide a personal energized touch to the job could do well in most positions including Head of Homeland Security. But to have someone already in mind for the job that you have been friends with since 15 clearly indicates a hurried poor selection process. In addition, one would be required to possess these qualities themselves in order to know what to look for in a Department Head candidate. As Bush lacks all of the above why in the world would we expect he be able to select someone with these skills in the first place.
I certainly hope no one was expecting Bush to appoint someone who is actually qualified! If that were to happen, the end of the world would be here. Let's bring back "Browny", after all he was so qualified to lead FEMA and therefore destroy New Orleans, he would be the perfect appointment from Bush and Cheney--he could continue the assault on the Constitution and through his incompetence he could destroy the Constitution. After all, the more incompetent idiots Bush surrounds himself with, the less incompetent he may appear (it doesn't work of course but what else can he do?)
Are they still drinking buddies? Clay holds lots of liquids, shrubs not so much.
"Mr. Johnson has no experience in law enforcement, the law, the military, counter-terrorism or intelligence. His current job involves oversight of management throughout the executive branch. Prior to that, he served during the Bush/Cheney transition by helping Mr. Bush to staff thousands of federal positions."

Good gravy, this guy is overqualified!
Here we go again.  Yet another Bush crony to help maintain the most secret White House since Nixon.

There are 511 days until the end of this regime on 1/20/2009
There are 434 days until election day -- 11/4/2008
And we are counting down.
What's with Bush's obsession with Fredo/Frito?
Just what Homeland Security needs, somebody who speaks Dubya's 'Language'. Oh, well, I guess our Potato Chips will be safe.
If you are looking for organizational skills, wouldn't it make sense to hire a former CEO, one that didn't run the company into the ground?

If you are looking for some one qualified in defensive preparations, wouldn't it make sense to hire a retired general, one that actually got Iraq right?

I'm as qualified as a mail order executive and I'm not qualified at all!

There are 511 days until the end of this debacle on 1/20/2009
There are 434 days until election day -- 11/4/2008
And we are counting down.
It would seem bush is running out of cronies.  What's next, bush's old coke dealer gets to head the DEA or maybe the dept of transportation since experiance is somehow not required for cabinet level jobs?
No experience, no solid credentials, yet could possibly be at the helm of one of the most powerful organizations in this country.  PERFECT!!!  These jack-asses just don't get it, just don't care what harm and havoc they bring about and the people in this country need to wake the hell up!!
He must have trouble keeping a job.  He's had so many....Citicorp, pepsico, frito-lay, Horchow, dallas museum of art, Wilson sporting goods, neiman-marcus mail order, and Bush's permanent asskisser.  i think he's most proud of the latter. UHHH.  Just because he's had a lot of jobs in his career doesn't make him qualified for the security of this country.  I do like chips and pepsi though.  OK he's got my vote.
No Carol, Les aspin had no qualifications to be defense secretary under Clinton. Robert Kennedy was JFK's brother for God's sake, you don't think they thought alike. You guys can't be serious. Hillary hired a Wall Mart security guard to pull 900 FBI files on her detractors. Give me a freaking break !
His Wikipedia file says that while at Yale he once pulled down the goalposts after a Princeton game.  One thing I hate is a bunch of Ivy-Leaguers swinging from goal post.  Ok I won't support his nomination....But still he sold chips and pepsi...hmmm..what a dilemma.  He's probably the one, though, that is sending me all that junk mail.  hmmmm.....Maybe Bush is thinking (I know thinking and Bush in the same sentence?) that he'll bombard the terrorists with junk mail and they won't have time to plan another attack.  BUSH is a GENIUS!!!!
Larry seems moody today.  Must be that time of the month.
There you go again Larry defending Bush by attacking others. face it guy Georgie boy is the worst president we've ever had. Stop trying to defend the indefensible.
I see you've finally figured out that RFK was KFK's brother...and gee they thought alike at that. That's some scoop you have there VACUOLE!
You just brought up RFK because it was his influence on his brother that led to the passage of the Civil Rights Act, and your sore that you can't abuse "nigras" anymore.
One more thing "Taxes are the price we pay for civilization". Bitching about your taxes illustrates what an uncultured barbarian you are at heart.
Can you say "Michael Brown"? No experience. Once again Bush has put loyalty ahead of experience. The neo-cons can continue to whine and complain that the president has been treated unfairly. All that he is enduring is because of his own actions. He chose all these people that are resigning. Oh wait a minute. When you have no more credibility, blame Clinton!
Georgieboy is going to have a hard time finding a professional to fill either Fredo's or Chertoffs shoes. I think Clay Johnson might be the only friend he has left that hasn't resigned from the White House in disgrace. Hey Georgieboy and Deferment Dick  follow Karl's and Fredo's lead. Don't go away mad..just go away
Larry: Regardless of poor appointment selections by others as you mentioned Clinton, JFK and Hillary it still does not remove the fact that Bush also makes the same poor selections. You can compare all you want Larry but it does not remove the fact that GW has made many errors of judgement in making such appointments as well as others. And as GW is currently the President he is the one that is now  accountable for his management skills, not Clinton or JFK, and not Hillary unless elected. Have most Presidents, Governors, etc. use the crony system to make appointments. Of course they have (Democrat and Republican) and will continue to do so, but let's criticize and seek change one at a time Larry. When Bush leaves office and we have a new President (no matter who that may be) we'll criticize them as well if they also use poor judgement in making such appointments.
Clay won't be able to keep Georgieboy safe from pretzels. Frito-Lay makes Rolled Gold!
Now Dubya will have someone to discuss the articles in 'Girls and Corpses' magazine with.
Just what we need another guy born on third base who thinks he hit a triple running things.
Larry I'm confused - are you saying you agree with all those past occurrences? You must, because you're holding them up for comparison in order to defend the current monkey in chief.

Is that really the best you can do to stick up for your guy - bring up questionable policies of past presidents? That's pretty weak.

It says a lot to me that the best thing you can say in defense of your guy involves bringing up questionable actions by past presidents.

Way to hold your guy to a higher standard, Larry! You're holding him up to some of the "iffiest" actions taken by past presidents. You must be very proud of your boy.

You're basically saying that he's almost as good as the worst things done by past presidents.
Larry, sorry, but none of those people you named participated in a quarter of the cronyism that has been seen by this administration.  People who were sent to oversee the reconstruction of Iraq were hired based on their loyalty or their parents' loyalty to GWB, not on job skills or experience.  We all know how well that went, don't we?

I have a question, Larry . . . why do you have more loyalty to George W. Bush than you do to our country and its laws?
As far as Chertoff, I didn't think even “this” administration would consider him. The Senate confirmation hearings would be brutal, deservingly I add!!  The hearings would only serve to remind America of the federal government’s deplorable response to Hurricane Katrina; how this administration responded to the disaster then, and how it continues to mismanage it today.

Chertoff’s “psychic gut” would also pose serious problems!! For anyone who would “use” his “gut” to scare Americans into fearing a “summer terrorist attack” was on the horizon for the sole purpose of helping this corrupt administration gut (pun intended) more of our civil liberties is not fit to hold his current position, let alone Attorney General of the United States.

PEACE!!

Jamie my friend (11:51 am post)!! The pre-Larry Linville/"Frank Burns" leaving M*A*S*Hs are EASILY in my top 5 fav shows of all time - just too stinkin' funny! I don't enjoy the later ones quite so much because they tended to get a little preachy. The very last episode makes me absolutely SOB, and not much usually does.
Larry,

At least Les had military experience in the Army, worked for the pentagon, and was elected (oppose to be appointed by the Supreme Court)as Congressman by the people of WI.  How much military did experience did Rumsfield, cheney, and georgie have?
Kennedy was a very qualified ag.  He was initially appointed to a federal investigation position by a republican.
Republican hack, Ken Starr, chose not to prosecute Hillary regarding the FBI files because after a complete review he came to realize there was no wrong-doing.
Perhaps we are just missing the threat posed by cool ranch flavoring.
Krista.  No kiddin'. This has got to be the most unqualified bunch ever to be called an 'Administration'. What does 'The Unqualified, Elected By The Uneducated, Leading The Uninterested', say about us as a Nation? We'd be better served by Temps.
I have concluded that the defining characteristic, and only real skill liberals have is a knack for character assassination.  Without that ability liberals have nothing.
This blog is really getting past horrible.  Half measures avail nothing and they certainly won't keep this blog going.  How many more have to leave before you fix the problems?
Larry, you so love to cherry pick your facts, even if they aren't germane to this discussion.  JFK and Bill are ancient history.

Now, name one '43' administration appointment who is qualified for their position -- and not in the way that a fox is qualified to run a hen house.

Name just one case where '43' got it right and appointed some one who was good for the country and not just good for '43'?
When is someone going to tell Bush that his appointees need qualifications.  Staying at a Holiday Inn Express last night isn't enough!
'In addition, one would be required to possess these qualities themselves in order to know what to look for in a Department Head candidate. As Bush lacks all of the above why in the world would we expect he be able to select someone with these skills in the first place.

After everything my husband had to go through to get the job we're relocating for, it more than annoys that Bush is 'alledgedly' going to try and put this guy into the head of DHS.

You all know my husband just retired from the Navy in May, and the job he is going to is to replace the civilian that worked for him in London.  Because of the job description and location, my husband was pretty much the only person uniquely (sp?) qualified for the job, yet he still had to jump through all of the hoops and others had to be intereviewed.

I guess we should have a sense of relief that at least some parts of our Federal Government go through due process of hiring folks!
Well Clay Johnson certainly won't aid George W. Bush in his quest for a "legacy"!! The only reason he "accepted" Gonzo's resignation is because he's obsessed with his legacy, how delusional!!

I chillingly heard on the news this morning that Joe "Zel Miller" checking in is also on the short list to replace Gonzo.  Won't happen, he's to consumed with himself to "go away" in 2009, he'll remain a senator, and a horrible one at that!!

After listening to the media since yesterday, there was a common theory put forth among many Washington “insiders” for the “above-board” reason Gonzo’s resignation came today, or better said, ever!!  George W. Bush wants to spend the next 1 1/2 years creating his "legacy" (a joke in itself)!!

PEACE!!
Haven't you all realized YET that Bush doesn't care about what the people say in this country.. He's a spoiled brat, that will do what he wants to and at the same time go Na na na na na, then give you the raspberry.. WAKE UP! If Chertoff doesn't get the AG position right away, Bush and Cheney may pull another stunt during the Christmas Holidays by sticking him there while Congress is out of session if they don't give him who he wants. They repeat themselves on the way they do things over and over again.. That's why I keep telling everyone, go back and remember, because the past keeps repeating itself with these Yo-Yo's!
