Countdown Wednesday: Storm of Controversy

Posted: Wednesday, August 29, 2007 8:50 PM by Countdown
Filed Under:

Two Years Later: President Bush, who did not even mention Hurricane Katrina in his most recent State of the Union address this past January, today declaring in a visit to New Orleans that "better days are ahead" for that city. Given that independent studies reveal that only about a fifth of the money supposed to be spent on levees, has been spent (just a third of the money supposedly already spent on homes), it is notable the President did not say how many years or decades ahead those "better days" are.

More MoneyHe got $120 billion for Iraq on the promise that Iraq would fulfill political promises. It didn't. Now President Bush is back, with another reckoning. $50 billion, or else.

ODDBALL: La Tomatina time, and the fastest fan in the CFL.

"I am not Gay": Idaho Republican Senator Larry Craig last night endured a fate politically worse than becoming a convict.  He became a punch line. But while Senator Craig became a household name overnight, in the same time span, among his fellow Republicans, he became better known as "Senator Who From the What Now?"

Going to the DogOn the anniversary of the Katrina disaster, let it be noted that the late Leona Helmsley once gave $5 million to hurricane relief and will end up giving billions more to charity. That pretty much sums up the good stuff. The woman who famously said "only the little people pay taxes," decided that a little dog gets the largest single bequest from her inheritance.

WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD: Glenn Beck squares off against the MSHA and Fidel Castro for top honors.

Dragnet: Larry Craig: When the magazine Roll Call broke the news Monday night that Idaho Republican Senator Larry Craig had pleaded guilty two weeks ago to a misdemeanor, what captured the public, and political, attention, was not so much the charge of disorderly conduct itself. No, as the old saying goes, God is in the details. And the details are divine. We offer a dramatization, utilizing the actual, unaltered text of the Craig incident report. Embellished only with a Dragnet-style introduction and wrap-up.

Marines’ Trials in Iraq Killings Are Withering

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/30/world/middleeast/30haditha.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&th&emc=th

Full Moon (Sent Thursday, August 30, 2007 8:00 AM),
Yeah that fly bye was something special. And old Mike Brown who went to town to get pail of water,Mike fell down, and Dubya came back down groveling for votes and  with wasting Our Money all over.
We are in the Hole Mooner, 450 billion and counting with no-new taxes. Please explain on how all those visits of trying to pretend he has made it better by borrowing money we don't have but will pay one day for his war and all these NO New Tax Deals that should have been paid for with taxes so they didn't occur in the first place?Dubya and Dick are running the shill and are going to slip out the back mate in 2008.
I don't get it.Our roads are crummy,or bridges are crummy, the levees are crummy, armed forces equipment and troop levels are crummy and there is no money to pay for these little necessities of running this country.
Where do you suppose we should get it?From all the outsourced jobs, the oil companies, the guys at the big mac.......hmmm anybody seen my friend Jack I sent him to the store with a cow and he came back with three beans.Perhaps we can get a goose that will shit a solution to no new taxes but pay for our government.
Hod Damn what does it take to enlighten you no new tax
dummy's.You got to pay sooner or later. Now Mooner I have a very good friend who has lived in MS all his life as well as his family and friends and I will tell you this.Dubya can come down there with Cheney and kiss their asses in Jackson square but they still aren't going to vote Republican. They don't forget dude. Those levees are still in bad shape. The states got the casinos where Carlos Marcello always wanted them.
update please
Alright News Hole, I'm up till midnight composing the lenghtiest submission I've ever written.  I submitted and went to bed.  That would be 2 am eastern time, so it should be between Pam's 1:18 and Steve's 7:36 post.  ?????  Did your dog eat my homework?  I'll submit this and if it gets posted, I may attempt to rewrite it.
Jen Il     It might mean that the rePubicans are finally realizing that the holier-than-thou attitudes about alternative lifestyles is coming back to haunt them.  People are incensed by the fact that the pompous, mealymouthed Sen from Idaho is not man enough to admit his sexual proclivities (typical of this administration), is willing to try to 'make it go away' by blaming the vice cop, the Idaho Statesman, and everybody but himself for his predicament.  Larry Craig epitomizes everything that is truly sleazy in dubya's little White House of Horrors.

Full Moon  The reason dubya' speech may have seemed well spoken is that someone else w-r-o-t-e it, and he had days and days to rehearse it in front of dick cheney, and most words were probably no more than 3 syllables long.  I don't know for a fact, because any time I see that smarmy manchild on TV with his lips moving, I hit the mute button.  And the fact that he has visited 15 times means that he got coverage of his faux concern and spent a lot more of our taxes paying for fuel for his 747, the helicopter, the motorcade, and for salaries for body guards, make-up artists, etc, etc, etc  ad nauseum.
Yes Countdown, "it is notable the President did not say how many years or decades ahead those 'better days' are.

He has so many "experts" to call on for a most "astute" estimate, i.e. "It could last six days, six weeks. I doubt six months.”

I'm certain Dumbsfeld wouldn't mind!!

PEACE!!
No mention of Hillary's campaign contribution buddies and that connection at all.  Not even in the top ten.  And you talk about Fox news.  Oh wait, she's a democrat.  So what is the spin on that one folks?
Wow, my first submission just got posted.  Sorry News Hole, I'm a little grouchy today, up way too late night and had to get up way too early to get my wife's car in the shop this morning.  If you'll forgive my 1:24 post, can we still be friends?
K. Collins, USN (Sent Wednesday, August 29, 2007 8:59 PM)

I thank you for the compliment; and for yet giving me one more "difficult" assignment.  The CENTCOM one was challenging enough, given the fact I had to remove my personal feelings from my evaluation.

You're asking me to do the same again; I accept your challenge, but ask you to give me a bit of time.

PEACE K!!
The republicans have given us a whole bunch of new words to add to our vocabulary:

craiging = cruisin' airport gents rooms;
SOB = son of a bush (doesn't even reflect badly on mothers);
foleying = old dudes hitting on young dudes;
vp = euphemism for what craig was thinking with in Minneapolis;
rumsfeldian =   Machiavellian (easier to spell);
rovian = extreme Machiavellianism;
cheneyian = soulless.

Any other submissions?
Krista Swisher, Indianapolis, IN (Sent Thursday, August 30, 2007 12:16 PM)

LOL!! "All I know is I finally get to kill someone" - who would have known "Psycho" would one day become president!!
Does anyone know what the benchmarks in Iraq are?  I know one of them is to split up oil revenue but what are the other 36.  How do we judge progress if the benchmarks are secret?
All you democratic partisan hacks:  Nowhere in any of my post did I say that the Bush administration was without fault on the Katrina.  You obviously are too blind to respond to the questions:

1) Is is Bush's fault that crime is rampant in New Orleans.  Nagin gets a free pass right

2) Is it entirely Bush's fault that the construction that needs to be done has not been completed.  Shouldn't a leaner more efficient government such as state and local government participate in the rebuilding.

3) Doesn't this show that the federal government run project are never efficient, because of the enormous bureaucracy.

Katrina was a national embarassment, from the federal, state, and local level.  I can admit it that, and that is difference between you dems and I.  Your statement would read "Katrina was a national embarassment, from a federal level."  Unless, of course, a democrat happened to be in the office at the time.

I will interested in hearing the response here.

Keith, Allentown PA (Sent Thursday, August 30, 2007 7:55 AM)

Yes Keith, I do believe you are lying. With facts staring you in face, you continue to steadfastly maintain that neither George W. Bush or Dick Cheney has lied.  As I have stated before, you are an intelligent person; for anyone with such intelligence to write here that neither has lied and neither has done anything to merit impeachment is a lie. You have made these statements repeatedly and recently, just this week in fact.  These statements come after I have FIVE times posted the stipulations written in the Iraq War Resolution, which George W. Bush violated. Carol again posted it yesterday.

You refuse to accept the verbiage in the Resolution, which was passed into law by Congress, was violated by George W. Bush. You continue to adamantly state that George W. Bush did not facilitate a war against Iraq in violation of the Resolution, why? Refusing to admit something versus stating "no opinion" is one thing; to state what you have, and repeatedly, constitutes a lie.  I expect such erroneous propaganda from Scott-NV or Larry-SC; for Scott wrote yesterday I was "FOS" regarding the two critical stipulations, even after it was posted here again yesterday by Carol. Carol copied and pasted verbatim from the Resolution.  I expected more from you.

You have continued on this path of lies and deception; deal with the consequences.  I will not continue debating anyone who refuses to admit what is in black and white, the verbiage in the Resolution itself.
NANA, BILL, TEXASHOG and BUDDINSKI - I've been waiting for all of you.

Bush didn't make the wind blow, the seas surge or the levees break. Engineers have warned for years that New Orleans couldn't handle a major hurricane but no one would listen. Casino gambling was the priority. Bush even warned the mayor, who left school buses stranded in 4 ft of water and pu the safety of others in jeopardy. Guess what? He gets re-elected. And the governor couldn't decide when to send in the national guard. While FEMA was a big problem (at least I admit it) the overwhelmingly jackass attitude and absolute hatred directed toward Bush on this thread and others is nothing short of more empty-headed liberal insanity. Olberman tosses you a bone and you do what trained dogs do ... FETCH !!
Hi, Bill Rochester NY (11:56 am post). There is plenty of blame going back years and on both sides of the political coin to blame for the Katrina failures, as Harry Shearer even pointed out last night. But, I have to sadly agree with the basic premise of your post. Isn't it just a fine state of affairs when cronyism and politics are more important than human life and dignity?!

Boston Pat (11:42 am post), from your post to [insert deity of your choice here]'s ears!!
LA, Seattle

Great post, thank you for sharing.

You've given all the reasons why we need someone with the ability to clean up after '43's mess as our next president.  This time substance HAS TO triumph over appearance.

And all the Republican clowns falling over each other claiming how much bigger and badder thay are going to make Gitmo, are the same clowns who are spewing the 'family values', anti-gay, holier than thou rhetoric.

I don't think that those hypocrites can or should be part of the solution.
Hod Damn what does it take to enlighten you no new tax dummy's.You got to pay sooner or later

B A -

LOL!! You never cease to amaze me!! The current group of white collar White House criminals is premeditating, through their ever-increasing and sky-rocketing deficit, the largest tax increase ever upon our children.

For it is this generation that will pay their "delayed taxes"!!

You nailed it friend!!

PEACE!!
#5 We have already discussed Bush's failure as a President regarding the tragedy in New Orleans and along the gulf coast. He has no explanation. It was and remains a pathetic response by Bush and his Administration when thousands of Americans needed much more then just speeches.

#4 Bush has taken and been given plenty of time and opportunity to show some progress in Iraq. None has been forthcoming. White-washing and playing down reports that no progress has been made are plentiful from this administration to the point it has gone from laughable to just plain very very sad. This latest request for 50 billion should be responded to with a demand that Bush leave office and an immediate re-deployment of our troops.
As a conservative I'd like to say a little about this whole mess.  I am socially liberal, meaning I am strenuosly for gay rights and while I'm pro life I don't want all abortions illegal (see incest, rapea and danger to the mother) - i'm a libertarian.

I personally would be more willing to vote non republican if our choices weren't socialism or capitalism or active national defense or passive national defense which is basically what it's come down to.

I think a lot of conservatives are in the same boat -and I believe the hard core anti gay component of the republican party is much much smaller than most of you think.

we want equal rights for everyone, but there's no way social issues are going to prompt me or any other conservative to vote against what we believe in as far as national defense and economic practices.

there. i said it. : )
'Some good news:

Marines’ Trials in Iraq Killings Are Withering

scott henderson nv (Sent Thursday, August 30, 2007 1:18 PM)'

I see it as both good and bad.  The USMC screwed up royally on this one.  While I don't condone what they and others have been accused of doing, in reality they need to be in intense therapy.

If they are found guilty or not guilty, that will be the way that it is, but thousands of our troops are coming home with minds that don't function the same way they did before they went to that hell hole.  Would people be so understanding or demanding if some poor marine or soldier loses it and goes into homes here and kills people?  Nope-they'll get their butts thrown into jail.

This war is creating monsters that aren't being helped.  Too sad!
Rocky Mountain Guy - kudos for the Bush Speech channeling.  You were spot on - right down to the dumb look and smirk on his face.

Jen, Il - The ONLY reason that the Repugnikants are handing Craig his hat and pointing out the exit and not giving him that extra special passes that they gave Delay, Cunninham, Vitter, and others is that they saw themselves being handed their hats in the last election.  The continual drip, drip, drip of their own eroding values while trying to legislate the "family values" of the rest of us has consequences.

Frankly, I don't care what people do in their private lives unless those people are trying to eliminate our privacy rights.

Stay tuned to the new show:  Survivor/Republican.  Vote for who you think needs to be kicked off the island next.
You're asking me to do the same again; I accept your challenge, but ask you to give me a bit of time.
Pam Bignardi, San Pedro, California (Sent Thursday, August 30, 2007 2:53 PM)

There is no need to rush  or detailed, but I figured out by your comments that you are the best person for the job (whether I agree or disagree with your ans is irelevant). Take you time and just be honest is all I (and others) ask. The reason I ask is because I thought I had a good idea who I looking for in 08. However now I'm not ready to write it in concrete.

I promise not to ridicule your answer, however I am curious?
Pam (2:19 pm post), too bad we didn't have a little more "Francis" and a little less "Psycho"!! Man, now I'm going to have to watch STRIPES this weekend; my movie list for my long weekend is GROWING.
I agree with Bill Of Rochester (post of 11:56) in that the liberal party headed by Nancy and Harry are doing anything to help New Orleans because  of the majority of blacks. They control both houses of Congress and have not uttered one thing about helping those poor people. Shameful are they that have the power to help and refuse. I recommend al liberals who are realy concerned about the people in New Orleans to call Nancy and harry and pleas for them to do something. Or maybe the concern is not for the people of New Orleans - just making sure nothing happens . Wouldn't want "W" to get credit for it would we ?

And This is for my favorite terrorist Pam. What party is really hipocrits ? Let's see. We have a Sen. do an awful thing and we all ask him to resign. TonM foley was gone in minutes. The liberals have Congressmen who have done much worse. Gerry Stubbs admitted having a homosexual liason with a page who was entrusted to him. Barney frank ran a homosexual escort service out of his DC home, and what happened to them ?? LEADERSHIP positions in the democrat party. Throw in murder for Teddy, sexual assault for Bill and you get the picture. You guys are laughable and no one takes you seriously. Remember. liberals are irrevalent.
Pam Bignardi, San Pedro, California (Sent Thursday, August 30, 2007 2:26 PM)  I guess you are as illiterate as I think you are.  You either misrepresented the resolution, or you just don’t understand what you read.  Whichever you are simply wrong, demostratively wrong, and have lost any credibility one might have thought you had.
Texashogfan and Sue, I hope they are finally getting the hypocracy of thier "family values" retoric.  The cynic in me says the only reason they are asking this guy to step down is because Idaho is a red state and there is no chance of a Democrate replacing him.  This way they can claim to be cleaning up the party and getting rid of corruption without actually having to do anything about it.  Personally if I lived in Idaho I would be pretty POd that anyone in any party in DC thinks they get to chose my Senator.   Of all the many republican scandals this one seems so relatively minor.  But I'm apparently not a good judge since I don't hate the gays.
We get it Bill of Rochester , Fidel wants people who think like him in office. Hey, i have a great idea - Hillary ran for Sen. from NY when she had never lived there. Maybe can run for President of Cuba , she's never lived there either - and her approval ratings would be much higher. And Bill could have all of the Cuban cigars he wants. Where's Monica !!! LOL
Jamie, Chula Vista, CA (Sent Thursday, August 30, 2007 3:32 PM)

I guess when you say "good and bad", the good part is they are found innocent, and the bad part is that they were charged in the first place.  I agree.  This is another case where the liberal press misrepresented the facts.
keith g - right on!
Again, Full Moon. Keith did NOT say that Bush didn't mention Katrina. He said that Bush did NOT mention Katrina in his STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS.
I'm tired of people picking & choosing the words of others.
In previous elections, various newspapers would have an online questionnaire, and based upon your answers, tell you which candidate was closest to your philosophies.  The next screen took you to your 'matched' candidate's page and explained how you agreed.

Carol, Long Valley NJ (Sent Wednesday, August 29, 2007 10:20 PM)

Do you have a reference I can check out?
So Sue , do you think the family values people are going to change to the liberals ? Let's see , get rid of the homosexuals or promote them to leadership . You still don't get it. Cleanse your party of the filth and see what's left - NOT MUCH. I don't worry about you getting the vote of the people that don't promote homosexuals nor put them on a pedistal. The majority are still good guys. Good luck in 08 , put Barney Frank as your poster child and go for it.
Uh...Keith from Allentown, Hillary gave the contributions that were received from the felon to charity.  Not really a top 5 story unless she was refusing to give the money back.
If you're having dificulty accepting the way KO presents the news (with truth) go back to watching FOX noise.  I'm sure they'll agree to everything you say.  You can be their "yes-man."  It's hard to believe that there are still people that defend this administration. What would this admin. have to do before the die-hard neocons finally see the light?...Shoot someone in the face at point blank range?  Never mind that's been done....Allow thousands to go without proper shelter and food during a hurricane while head of FEMA is having a steak dinner?  Oh that's been done too.  Send 160,000 plus to fight in a war based on lies while the Pres and VP both pulled family connections to get out of the war of their generation?  That's been done too.  How about send your "yes-men" to a ICU bed to get a signature?  Unbelievably that's been done too.  Ok I give up.. What would have to happen before they stop siding with the worst administration in history. Oh oh I got it...How about nominating your cleaning lady to the Supreme Court?  Even Ann Coulter disagreed with nominating Harriet Myers.  But I'm sure Keith from Allentown, Wayne, and Larry were all still right there behind the admin.  With all the gay news this week they just better watch how close behind Bush they get.

The artist has it all wrong. The dummy should know, just like all of us. that Clinton was the presidential porn star. It's in his impeachment process.
Thanx Sue, no one is ever going to accuse W of being loquacious, well now wait a second.  I suppose after Kerry volunteered for combat and W volunteered to bring the 8 ball to the kegger party, he was probably rather chatty.  Jeez, could you imagine how badly a non stop babbling W would mangle the english language on a beer fueled coke bender!  jen,il, I think there were 30 some benchmarks but the ones I remember were holding elections the Sunni's wouldn't boycott, passing the oil sharing revenue law, getting rid of the de-Baathifacation laws in order for former Baath party members to partake in government jobs, figure out a way to evenly distribute monies for rebuilding, firming up the Iraq constitution to prevent Iraq from forming 3 distinct factions, and many many more....other other bloggers have any idea what some more of the benchmarks were?
Scott, Columbus, OH
I appreciate your reasons for your political opinion. What I can't understand is why the Republican base is so intent on making morality a political issue. I'm not gay, rarely drink,I've never beaten my children, never stolen and have made those choices myself. OK being gay is not a choice. We all should be thankful that we're not gay as those who are have to endure so much from so many who have made it their business to punish them. What those in power do is  seize an issue that will bring them votes from the far right. I call that prostitution-. Hypocrisy is the reason I would never vote Republican.
JenII
I fear that it is all about money. I don't think the Repubicans care anything about family values. They have just snookered a lot of people by campaigning on sexual issues, from abortion on down to homosexuality. In the meantime they are loading up their bankaccounts and pockets.
We can only hope that the American people will start asking questions of themselves and do some investigating. Maybe they will see that the family values portion of the GOP platform was nothing more than throwing a few crumbs to the ignorant masses.
No, Bush didn't create hurricane Katrina, he just hasn't spent a whole hell of a lot of time being concerned about it sinse then.  He has spent so much damn money sending my brothers and others off to fight his deadly war, and not bothering to clean up our own country.  Forget NOLA, what about MS?  They still haven't received much of anything.

I don't give a crap about Nagin either-he's as bad if not worse than Bush when it comes down to it.  The only reason I even imagine he was reelected, is for the same reason people really looked up to Guiliani right after September 11-they had big enough mouths to talk the talk, but they have failed to walk the walk.

When it comes down to it, NOLA and the entire Gulf coast are STILL part of the United States of America, and they are still hurting badly-with no relief from the F'd up insurance companies or our government.  Why is our government so ready to send so much to so many other countries, but is so unwilling to take care of our own?

Pretty pathetic, don't you think????
Jocelyn - 1:02 p.m. post:  I "stand" corrected.  You got that right.  Women know what to do when the hand comes under the stall.
I need some help.

I spent about an hour today looking for the list I compiled (and kept kicking forward on the blog) of the Republican Senators up for re-election in 2008.  I know some of you said you copied and emailed the list and I'm hoping you kept it and can re-post it.

Otherwise, I need to compile the list again because I gave up on trying to find it on the previous blogs.  I need to keep my eyeballs on what these guys are up to.

Thanks.
They found Iraqs missing WMDs. In the UN, in New York.  Turns out we didn't have to go halfway across the world. Can our troops come home now?

Thank you for a great post.

We sure didn't get the 'traditional' republican spending practices from 2000 to 2006 now did we.

We got "pander to the base".
We got "try to legislate morality by moving the Supreme Court further to the right".
We got DOMA.
We got a "spend til you drop" republican legislative branch.
We got '43' who signed every bloated republican spending bill, but vetoed the "Stem Cell Research" bill.
We got deficits, and massive debt, and corporate welfare.
We got Nixon part II with all the secrecy, obfuscation and obstruction.
We got an immoral invasion and occupation of Iraq (IT WAS ALWAYS ABOUT THE OIL).
We've got a broken or almost broken military.

It is possible to have a democrat in charge of national security and the world won't come to an end. But this country can't afford four more years of an administration in the mold of Bush/Cheney.

FDR handled WWII just fine
Kennedy handled the Cuban Missile Crises just fine.
LBJ got bogged down in Vietnam, which also sucked Nixon down as well.

I don't believe that it takes a label of "D" or "R" to make a good commander in chief.  I think that the person and their leadership abilities are what makes or breaks the office.

Bush broke it -- big time -- now someone has to fix it.  Daddy can't do it this time.

As near as I can tell, the democrats and republicans are more the same fiscally, than not.  It's just that Republicans prefer to give the money to the rich and the Democrats prefer to give the money to the poor.  To my thinking, the rich don't need any more.  I'd rather see it spent on infrastructure myself.
Some people -- Get a life and get a clue.  My comments generally get posted, but sometimes they don't.  When they don't, I don't take it personally (at least, not usually), and neither should you.  I just try to figure out -- in my own mind -- why something wouldn't get posted (like maybe it was tasteless or too long or repetitive) and move on.  This should be fun.  It doesn't need to be validation.
