Just in case anyone thought he wasn't going to run, he's making it official.

Oh joy.. On the bright side, he has to have worked with plenty of homosexuals.. Just saying.

If he starts to get all uppity with spouting the party line against gays, hopefully one or a few of his former acting buddies will call him up and tell him to "CHILL, MARY!"

Sigh, did I say "Oh Joy," already?
A womanizing lobbiest who was Richard Nixons mole during watergate, sounds perfect for the GOP.
Any one who takes as long as he did to get into the race, is not the type of strong leader that we need to clean up '43's huge mess.  We need a leader, a real honest to goodness leader, one who CAN and WILL work with both side of the aisle to create solutions.  One who really does "walk the walk" and not just "talk the talk".

I don't believe that "Fred" is the answer.  I've also had it up to here (picture hand extended far above my head) with candidates touting their conservative values.  Look where that's gotten us!  I'd much rather they touted their leadership abilities as well as their belief in tolerance and equality.  But that's just my opinion.

The last actor we had as president went out of his way to destroy the unions and the middle class.  We can't afford another one.  We have to insist on SUBSTANCE over APPEARANCE.  Please, we've got to get it right this time.
Y'all think Fox Noise will have a Fred Thompson TV show/movie marathon? And, don't we have enough actors in DC already??!
Spectacular, I’m certain he will remain true to form and maintain his “above the law” mentality, i.e., supporting a pardon for convicted felons as I. Lewis Scooter Libby and the like.

George W. Bush, the Sequel (the Horror)!!
I think there "oughta be a law" against actors running for president! Plain and simple.

We have one in CA who actually believes he would be a good p.Resident!  God help us, all!  We'd even have to change the Constitution for him to run... I don't think so!!!

Quit messing with OUR Constitution, you dimwits!!

I don't know if they heard that... DIMWITS!! (smirk)

I, for one, am sick and tired of all those pious people who placate and pander to 'their base' in order to get elected, no matter what the end results.  Isn't that what georgy did?  His "money base" bought him TWO elections!!! Not one, but, TWO!
Yawn:  Go back to L&O Fred, that is the ONLY place I want to see your mug on t.v.!
Is it me, or is Fred almost looking a bit mummified? Perhaps it's all the Hollywood self-preservatives. Only the elite money-bags have the secret formula.

I wanted to say KUDOS to the Newshole moderators for being so awesome today. Great job, and you are appreciated.
This news just ruined my day..please not another actor..I'm having a hard time tolerating Arnie in CA.
LT in MD (Thursday August 30 7:14post)..yes I second the kudos..posts are coming up fast..
update me
"Is it me, or is Fred almost looking a bit mummified?"

It looks like Fred's been using the dark force.
To my fellow Californians:  I know a lot of people on the right that said they would be willing to have the Constitution changed so that Arnie could run for president.  I then asked them if they would be willing to change said law if the person who was running had the last name of Martinez, Mansoor, Nguyen, etc., and they too were foreign born:  Hah! Lots of pauses with no real yes or no answer.

I'll be back!
If only he could run the country like his character ran the 7th Fleet in Hunt for Red October, the D.A.'s office  in Law & Order, the Dulles Airport in Die Hard 2, the CIA director in No Way Out or President Grant in the Wounded Knee movie...

And that is quite a resume of leadership.
Potentially the hottest First Lady since Jackie O.

Jamie, Chula Vista, CA (Sent Thursday, August 30, 2007 7:01 PM)
I don't even watch the L & O episodes he's on.. when I do watch them.. my finger clicks the off button on the TV Remote...
Let this be a sign, maybe. When he takes his tie off, he's actually going to say something?
Just one more Nixon era retread to prove how tired and worn out the neocons are. Come to think of it, there's no "neo" left in neocon, anyway, leaving us only with "con" (in about every sense of that word). This guy's credentials are, if I recall correctly, counsel to the republicans on the judiciary committee during the Nixon impeachment hearings (a real feather in anyone's cap), a short stretch as a senator, and bit part TV actor.  And people say that Edwards and/or Obama are unseasoned?  They're at least young enough to be unseasoned.  What's Thompson's excuse?
I'm not a real leader, I just play one on TV.
His base will be happy,  the preachers at churches all over the south are telling their congregants to vote for Fred.  He'll do what a good Christian elected official is expected to do,  place his hand on the Bible and swear to uphold it.  I never really have a doubt about that.  I know the U.S. Constitution means little or nothing to them.
Fred Thompson has until September 4th to respond to the FEC complaint filed by Lane Hudson, a blogger and citizen activist.  Part of his complaint:

"I write to file a complaint against the Fred Thompson for President Exploratory Committee for violation of Federal Election Law under the Commission's jurisdiction. It is clear that he has violated 11 CFR 100.72, the "testing the waters" provision of FEC law. Accordingly, his failure to file disclosure reports violates the law, and the Commission should demand full disclosure of Mr. Thompson's campaign fund raising and expenditures, as well as penalize Mr. Thompson for his willful violation of the law."

http://newsfortheleft.blogspot.com/2007/08/fec-complaint-filed-against-fred.html

Will Thompson respond, or has this complaint been ignored by the FEC?
What frightens me most about Fred is that there are going to be people who jump on his bandwagon based on the fictional politics and fictional decisions of his fictional "Law & Order" character (whom I like), rather than his real-life political positions (which scare the hell out of me). We can't afford another good ol' boy in the White House. Look what the current one is costing us...
I thought he might say he wasn't Gay, also. It's what all the Republicans seem to be saying lately. Must be the GOP New Millenium Phrase, a 'Contract On America II...We're Not Gay!'.
If the Dems had all the answers they would have been in the White House the last 2 terms now wouldn't they? And the newly elected Democratic Congress wouldn't have an approval rating of 18%, far below Bush's. And why did Congress pass into law what some Dems said was Bush's bending or breaking of the  Constitution?

Walter (any relation to Rupert?) We don't know if Fred will assume all the leadership qualities that you described in his television and movie roles until we elect him, right?
Just what we need, another second rate actor as President! Remember this guy was a rat for the Nixon administration during the Watergate Hearings.
On the stump all he seems to be capable of is refering to Ronald Reagan. Reagan was another second rate actor who was a rat for Tail-Gunner Joe McCarthy.
Like Reagan; Thompson is totally bereft of ideas. Doubtless his campaign will be based on the lies, half-truths, and crackpot economics so popular with the Republican base. Or to quote the late Hunter Thompson "the yahoo vote" and "the bombs and Jesus crowd"
Amen to Carol Long, and all the other wonderful bloggers that Keith has...
Please, no more actors for President. It is true that Reagan began the demise of the middle class, and sped it up by destroying unions. (Unions are what gave our country a MIDDLE CLASS! At least they are what gave it strength and a voice.)
I distrust anyone, male or female, that has much younger spouse. (The term 'trophy wife' comes to mind but I will give all the benefit of the doubt.)
I also have a new-found appreciation for lawyers as president, senator or representative. (George W. and Tom DeLay are two examples.)
Jamie Chula Vista CA (August 30 8:09 PM post)..

Hypocrisy is alive and well on the right...
The real questions for Thompson:

Can you hang onto a campaign manager?  How many has he gone through even BEFORE the big announcement - 3?  4?

How are you going to spin your money making lobbyist career?  Or are you going to be the Lobbyist in Chief?

Aside from being a Republican, are you even remotely qualified to be President?  Acting doesn't count.

How are you going to spin providing all of that inside information to Richard Nixon during Watergate?  You were entrusted with that information, but considered your party to be more important than anything else.

And how about that trophy wife you've got....
I also have a new-found appreciation for lawyers as president, senator or representative. (George W. and Tom DeLay are two examples.)

wrote Linda Becker, Toledo, OH

Thank you for your kind words.  Would you like to clear this up?  I don't think it came out the way you wanted.  Neither George W or Tom Delay are lawyers.
LT in MD:  Christ!  I agree about the mummification.  He's looking more like 80 than 65.  The 30% crowd are just peeing their pants with glee on First Read.  Just what we need, another lazy half-wit who's clueless about foreign policy.
The Adult Diaper Presidency?
Wrong Fred, we said.
(And when did the "neo" in neocon become short for "neolithic"?)
better fred then a cilton with balls
Bill. Tail-Gunner Joe has been replaced by Tail-Gunner Larry.

Or perhaps if Bush hadn't cheated.  Not that I think Dems have "all the answers"--no one does. But I certainly think they have far better answers than anyone on the right.

"And why did Congress pass into law what some Dems said was Bush's bending or breaking of the Constitution?"
What exactly are you referring to here?  Can you clarify this?  Are you sure you're not referring to the previous congress? And by the way, Congress's approval rating is low because Dems still don't have enough of a majority to get things past their obstructionist Rep counterparts or the obstructionist Rep president.  So people blame the entire Congress.  Actually, I believe these polls are given far too much credence in the media.  They tend to survey, what, 1000 or so people out of the millions living here?  Plus, they are owned by Right-leaning companies so who knows to what degree the results may be skewed? Though they surely know they don't have much leeway when it comes to the (lack of) popularity of this president.

"We don't know if Fred will assume all the leadership qualities that you described in his television and movie roles until we elect him, right?"
Suppose there was an actor who played an airline pilot on TV and decided he wanted to really be one and folks took that attitude to letting him do it. Would you want to be on that flight?  I sure wouldn't.
What's a 'cilton'?

If you could spell, that might have been funny, but since you couldn't be bothered to do spell check or proof read, you just confirmed what we think of you.

Full Moon

We've just had 6 plus years of incompetence.  All party partisanship aside, WE NEED A REAL LEADER next time.  Not just an actor who plays one on TV.  We need someone who can clean up the mess that '43' has made of this country, Iraq, the Constitution etc.

If the Republicans would shut up about homosexuality and abortion, and really mean what they say about smaller and more efficient government -- they could win the next election in a landslide.  But they do preach, and they've been seduced to the dark side of ear marks, and they have turned this great country in to an imperialistic war-monger.  So now we as a nation and they as a party are in deep trouble.

Think about it.  Republicans may believe in States Rights, but the Democrats believe in Personal Rights.  I'll take Privacy Rights any day of the week.
Carol (September 2, 10:22PM) - If personal and privacy rights have to be "compromised " to win the war on terrorism then I'm all for it. Remember JFK's imfamous "ask not what your country can do for YOU, ask what YOU can do for your country." I believe the man with the eternal flame was even a Democrat, wasn't he? Take John's advise Carol. Look out for the country. This isn't just about you.
A voice of ignorance said: "If personal and privacy rights have to be "compromised " to win the war on terrorism then I'm all for it."

It is those very rights we fight AGAINST terrorism to protect and defend. If you would barter them away so easily, you disgrace all that for which our ancestors struggled and died. And Kennedy spoke of making a great nation even better, not of diminishing it. If you would "look out for the country", you would seek to PRESERVE, PROTECT AND DEFEND the Constitution, not piss it away.
Neils - Of course you choose to miss the point of my blog. Either the ignorance or jackass in you is showing. I suspect both. WE FIGHT FOR OUR FREEDOM. My point is that there is NO WAY terrorism can be fought WITHOUT possibly giving up a few of our rights and /or priviledges at least to some degree. If the Department of Homeland Security, the CIA, whoever it might be, needs info concerning terrorists, then I have no problem with them doing what they need to do to get it. THAT"S called PROTECTING AND DEFENDING. YOU obviously don't understand we are living in another world, or you just wouldn't mind seeing the U.S. "hit again" by the terrorists as long as YOU don't have to give up any personal sacrifices. Think of the country, NOT YOURSELF. IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU !!!!!
