Fantasy Football, The KO Way

Posted: Monday, September 03, 2007 4:52 PM by Countdown

Here's something we're calling Keith Olbermann's "Master FFL List By Somebody Who Is Not A Master."  Selected by the Football Night in America's own Keith Olbermann...these picks are hand crafted, using only the finest fantasy football information.

This list was compiled with Keith's own fantasy league in mind...two quarterbacks start each week, making them slightly more valuable.  This list puts also puts an emphasis on youth in the world of RB's, and puts a lower value on players whose coach doesn't talk to the media about his gimpy roster (you know who you are!).  So...you can go with some of the list the so-called 'experts' have compiled...but if you want to win, you'll stick with Olbermann.

Keith's top ten are on the front page...you'll have to click on read more to see the final 237.

OK...I LOVE sports, including football, and I recognize and know about the vast majority of these players, but can someone give me a "primer" on how fantasy football works so I don't look any more like a diseducated moron than I need to?! Please and thanks!
What on earth does this mean?
I think we're supposed to pick one player from each list to make up a team. This is not something I know about, but hubby clued me in.
Okay. I will not pretend to know anything about fantasy sports. But if this list is a rating-kind-of-system: You spelled Santonio Holmes' name wrong, and Drew Brees should be higher.
I adore you Keith, even if you have an annoying adoration for sports.  :)
Yeah I know, I'm a Hawkeye, but Dallas Clark...136?  Give me the Proverbial Break. The Man Has The Ring. The Top TE of 'the Soup', Dude. Better rethink this one or I'll tell Nile Kinnick's Ghost to haunt your studio for a couple of days.
Geeze, I don't have time to watch real football let alone the fantasy thing.  Of course not being able to watch it for the next three years-AFN/AFRTS-shows them really, really late at night, so I may have to jump on the fantasy football bandwagon.

Hello to Yuppie Ninja up in my home town of Long Beach!
I guess this means another long 17 weeks for me as a Giants fan.
CA, Larry in Charleston, LA Seattle, and anybody else that is a veteran or has one in the family, I read this today in the military news:  35,000 vets personnel data stolen.

You can read the article here (I hope), and there is a link if you are a member of a POW association.  Hopefully everybody's records are safe.

Oh heck..no Countdown today..oh well guess I'll go outside and play...
Jamie Chula Vista, CA (September 3 8:0lpm post)..

Thanks for this information. I'm passing it along to veteran friends...
Wow...I did "the google" on fantasy football; it sounds stinkin' complicated! My ex-brother-in-law used to (and I imagine still does) spend A LOT of time and money on this. Whatever happened to just watching the game, placing your bets, etc., or is that just too old fashioned?

Rex Grossman should've been ridden out of Chicago on a rail; during a pre-season game with the Colts, a couple of pre-rookies looking for jobs with the Colts managed to strip the ball away from him. LOSER! And, apologies to any Colts fans who read this, they will not repeat; SORRY!
WOE is me! No Countdown tonight, and it must be 100 degrees outside, and with no Ac and only a couple fans to blow the hot air around, I am completely miserable.

You don't know how much I look forward to Keith. I am a Countdown fan, but not a sports fan, sorry. Guess I will go find a couple box stores to wander around in to keep cool.
Hey Laura-did it cool off up there?  We got about a 5 minute rain, dreaded heat & humidity, then a cool down.  It's not exactly cold, but compared to the past week it's not half bad.  I hope it heads your way.

Ciao!
Not sure about your league there Keith, you've got R Bush as 28th best RB?  Chris Simms on the rankings, he's 4th on TB depth chart and will not see the field this year!   Grossman as 8th best QB??  You must get points for INT's in your league!
A show as sophisticated as "Countdown" and so few of its viewers are into fantasy football? I'm shocked and dismayed.

I plan to use KO's list in an upcoming draft - championship, here I come.
Fantasy Football = Dungeons and Dragons for sports fans.

Think about it: an elaborate point system to track progress and ratings, imaginary outcomes, strategic shifting of personnel, incredible time invested, etc.

The similarities are uncanny. Grown men shuffling around quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers, just like adolescents dealing in the realm of knights, dragons, wizards and elves.

That's all from me tonight.

Keith used to be a sportscaster on ESPN.
Bill Rochester NY (Sent Monday, September 03, 2007 7:59 PM)

Dude, you got my sympathies. My second favorite team's always been Buffalo, who never fails to disapoint.

Jamie (8:01 post) - I hadn't heard this. It's quite disturbing, and I thank you for bringing it to us.
Oh heck..no Countdown today..oh well guess I'll go outside and play...

Laura in Los Angeles (Sent Monday, September 03, 2007 8:22 PM)

Stay away from the sparkely red stuff, please.

Folks, if you can't laugh about the stupid and scary in this world, well, you'll end up like me.
Well, this is al just one man's fantasy, of course.  In my own fantasy world, Brett Favre still ranks a lot higher than 120, and certainly higher than Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, or Mark Bulger (???).  Where did Mark Bulger come from, anyway?  I guess it depends on what you value, and on my scale, Favre is still -- and may always be -- the best there ever was.  If only for the twinkle in his eye.  Not to mention his perpetually unshaven look and his ironman constitution.  Nothing, but nothing, is better than that.
Charlie Connerly, Charlie Connerly, Charlie Connerly, fantasy football will only be cool when it goes retro; next pick Charley Trippi.  Actually I got entirely hooked on FF a few years ago.  A true fan of college grid, it makes the pro game tolerable for me.
Thanks Keith...I remember your Detroit Tigers prediction!!!
Bill/Rochester: I hear you. Bad news for Pats' defense over the weekend. Boy oh boy.
Fantasy footbal is possibly the best thing ever to happen to the NFL.  It's pretty simple once you participate in one and it makes every game that comes on tv watchable.  18 million people play fantasy football in the United States alone. I used to think it was stupid before I tried it one time and 10 years later, I play in about 8 a year.
I guess I'm glad so many people enjoy fantasy football; like I said, though, seems like there's an awful lot to keep track of. I'm content with watching the games, making bets PURELY IN THE SPIRIT OF FUN, and cussing out the team I picked to win for not covering the point spread.
Wow Matt (10:56 pm post)! I've never even indirectly called "sophisticated". Thanks! I'll remember that the next time (probably tonight) that I eat a meal sitting on the floor in front of my sofa watching THE SIMPSONS instead of eating at the dining room table like a "civilized" person.
I love football but don't know anything about fantasy football however, I know Peyton Manning is going to break every single QB stat on the planet and he's ranked below Carson Palmer?  KO! I would start Peyton in every single game if that is allowed in fantasy ball.  Who is Marc Bulger?  Ha!  Rams?  Carson Palmer has a bad knee and his team may end up in jail on any given Sunday and be unavailable to play.  He can in no way be better than Peyton.  Peyton has the team around him to make the plays that get into the record books.  Edge did NOTHING this past season,  he fumbled the ball more than he ran the ball. Go with Addai anytime you can over Edge. Throw that ball to Marvin and it's in his hands,  rock solid.   One to look out for...Mathias Kiwanuka,  DE, Giants.  A CHS, BC grad,  have known the kid since he and my oldest began school together in 1987 and he will make his mark this year.  On the same football topic,  anyone seen the Peyton/Reggie spot advertising football night in America?  Too funny.  KO,  have a blast here in Indy!  GO COLTS!!
Sorry - as much as I love football I have enough trouble keeping track of the real thing to even get interested in Fantasy Leagues.  I'm sooooooo ready for the season to start.

Go Pack Go!

Yeah, I'm a cheesehead partisan....

James, NYC, NY (Sent Monday, September 03, 2007 10:58 PM)

too funny. Kinda like a grown man who still collects baseball cards and reads Harry Potter...

Hi everybody glad you all made it back today...

Jamie..no rain here, but in the upper desert plenty of it.  It seems a bit cooler today, but even with AC the heat soaks right through the walls. If it gets too bad I just go out back and tip toe through the sprinklers. Glad it cooled off for you a bit. This weather is the worst yet. Lots of people without power since Saturday.

R.A.D. Hawthorne CA (September 3 9:23 PM post)..it's nice to know I, Jamie and others are not alone in this misery..

JAM Pittsburgh PA (September 3 ll:41PM post).. thank goodness those fires are far enough away..

Looking forward to Keith's special comment.

Have a great day everyone...

Hey MK (1:00 pm post), where did you hear that the "Football Night in America" crew of Collinsworth, Costas, and Olbermann were actually going to be here? I tried contacting "the local NBC affiliate" but haven't gotten an answer. The class I teach is on Thursday evenings, so my students will be chomping at the bit to get out early; I probably will dismiss early. AM I A GREAT PROFESSOR OR WHAT??!! ;)
Rex Grossman at the 51st spot?! 8th QB overall? A travesty, I say! Still, your rankings still are probably on target enough to explain why I'll rank dead last in both my leagues this year.
Keith, Keith, Keith...  Palmer and Bulger ahead of the all-mighty Manning!?  Just for that... I may have to flip over to O~Really tonight.  (HA! Just kidding.  I cant even type that without laughing.)
For you Fantasy Football neophytes allow me to explain... You select players in rounds similar to the real NFL draft. Generally, you have 10 to 12 franchises or teams. You take turns choosing players according to the type of lineup structure your league has adopted... i.e. 1 QB, 2 RB, 2WR, 1TE, 1K & 1DT. When your players score on Sunday, you receive points. Most of the leagues today are tracked online and are totally automated. I still play with guys from 20 years ago and we have a unique system unlike the online leagues, so some of our scoring is still manually tabulated. Most fans have a favorite team, this twist on watching and following the game expands your interest and gives you a reason to follow and thus be knowledgeable about other teams you previously could care less about. It's really a fun way to watch and follow the game. You can still keep your favorite team and manage and follow players across the league. Check it out... you'll be hooked too!
Krista,  I work downtown and I get off work at 4:00,  I am thinking about going to the circle but...I don't know about getting caught up in the crowd.  I would really LOVE to be in the dome to hear Mellencamp.  I WILL be watching (here at home or in person) all the pregame stuff and hoping the game is over early enough for me to get some decent sleep for work on Friday.

I think your students will love getting out early,  go for it!  Life is short,  might as well enjoy it while we can.
MK (5:55 pm post), to sound throughly juvenile, but...

I've got Friday off! I've got Friday off! I've got Friday off!
I read that KO would be here sonmewhere in the post here on the blog.  Silly me,  I believed it!  Maybe it is true,  maybe it isn't.  The Star said today that the NFL season kickoff was always in the city of the franchise that won the super bowl and I made an assumption....oh oh.  The post said KO would be here Wednesday and Thursday,  why oh why am I so naive?  I have worked only one day in the past two weeks,  I have enjoyed every minute of every day so I know how much fun can be had when work is not in the plan.  KO is on!!!! Gotta run!
i understand LaDainian Tomlinson at #1 but manning at 10th come on!
JAM hate to disappoint you but I'm  a NY Football Giants fan, not a Bills fan. I still kid Bills fans about Scott Norwood and "wide right"
Pat don't worry the Patriots will be alright. Their only problem is that they play in the A.F.C. which is loaded this year.
Rex Grossman ahead of Eli Manning? No way.
Bill, the AFC is really loaded, I agree.

My concern with the Pats is that even though it's pretty likely they'll win their division again, I was hoping they'd get a bye week and home field advantage during playoffs. But with the state of their defense for the first month of the season, I'm worried.

Peyton Manning is going to have another awesome year. He's so good.

Good luck with the Giants this year. It's wide open in the NFC from what I heard over the weekend.
Learn who Marvin Harrison plays for.
Keith,Im a huge fan.Your comment on Tuesday was awesome, the list is lacking.Shockeys a all pro and Jacobs will be better than Droughns.Keep the comments coming. It is fitting you quote Murrow.BY your words and deeds you have earned it Sir.
Go Panthers!
