The President of Hypocrisy

So the President, behaving a little bit more than usual, like we'd all interrupted him while he was watching his favorite cartoons on the DVR, stepped before the press conference microphone and after side-stepping most of the substantive issues like the Israeli raid on Syria in condescending and infuriating fashion, produced a big-wow political finish that indicates, certainly, that if it wasn't already -- the annual Republican witch-hunting season is underway.

"I thought the ad was disgusting. I felt like the ad was an attack not only on General Petraeus, but on the U.S. Military.

"And I was disappointed that not more leaders in the Democrat party spoke out strongly against that kind of ad.

"And that leads me to come to this conclusion: that most Democrats are afraid of irritating a left-wing group like Move-On-Dot-Org -- or **more** afraid of irritating them, than they are of irritating the United States military."

"That was a sorry deal."

First off, it's "Democrat-ic" party, Sir.

You keep pretending you're not a politician, so stop using words your party made up. Show a little respect.

Secondly, you could say this seriously after the advertising/mugging of Senator Max Cleeland? After the swift-boating of John Kerry?

But most importantly... making that the last question?

So that there was no chance at a follow-up?

So nobody could point out -- as Chris Matthews so incisively did, a week ago tonight -- that you were the one who inappropriately interjected General Petraeus into the political dialogue of this nation in the first place!

Deliberately, premeditatedly, and virtually without precedent, **you** shanghaied a military man as your personal spokesman -- and now you're complaining about the outcome, and then running away from the microphone?

Eleven months ago the President's own party -- the Republican National Committee -- introduced this very different kind of advertisement, just nineteen days before the mid-term elections.

Bin Laden.

And Zawahiri's rumored quote of six years ago about having bought "suitcase bombs."

All set against a ticking clock, and finally a blinding explosion... and the dire announcement:

"These are the stakes - vote, November 7th."

That one was ok, Mr. Bush?

Terrorizing your own people in hopes of getting them to vote for your own party has never brought as much as a public comment from you?

The Republican Hamstringing of Captain Max Cleeland and lying about Lieutenant John Kerry met with your approval?

But a shot at General Petraeus -- about whom you conveniently ignore it is you who reduced him from four-star hero to a political hack -- that merits this pissy juvenile blast at the Democrats on national television?

Your hypocrisy is so vast, Sir, that if we could somehow use it to fill the ranks in Iraq you could realize your dream -- and keep us fighting there until the year 3000.

The line between the military and the civilian government is not to be crossed.

When Douglas MacArthur attempted to make policy for the United States in Korea half a century ago, President Truman moved quickly to fire him, even though Truman knew it meant his own political suicide, and the de-ification of a General who history suggests had begun to lose his mind.

When George McClellan tried to make policy for the Union in the Civil War, President Lincoln finally fired his chief General, even though he knew McClellan could galvanize political opposition - as he did... when McClellan ran as Lincoln's presidential opponent in 1864 and nearly defeated our greatest president.

Even when the conduit flowed the other way and Senator Joseph McCarthy tried to smear the Army because it wouldn't defer the service of one of McCarthy's staff aides, the entire civilian and Defense Department structures -- after four years of fearful servitude -- rose up against McCarthy and said "enough" and buried him.

The list is not endless -- but it is instructive.

Air Force General LeMay -- who broke with Kennedy over the Cuban Missile Crisis -- and was retired.

Army General Edwin Anderson Walker -- who started passing out John Birch Society leaflets to his soldiers.

Marine General Smedley Butler -- who revealed to Congress the makings of a plot to remove F-D-R as President -- and for merely being approached by the plotters, was phased out of the military hierarchy.

These careers were ended because the line between the military and the civilian is... not... to... be... crossed!

Mr. Bush, you had no right to order General Petraeus to become your front man.

And he obviously should have refused that order and resigned rather than ruin his military career.

The upshot is -- and contrary it is, to the Move-On advertisement -- he betrayed himself more than he did us.

But there has been in his actions a sort of reflexive courage, some twisted vision of duty at a time of crisis. That the man doesn't understand that serving officers cannot double as serving political ops, is not so much his fault as it is your good, exploitable, fortune.

But Mr. Bush, you have hidden behind the General's skirts, and today you have hidden behind the skirts of 'the planted last question' at a news conference, to indicate once again that your presidency has been about the tilted playing field, about no rules for your party in terms of character assassination and changing the fabric of our nation, and no **right** for your opponents or critics to as much as **respond**.

That, Sir, is not only un-American -- it is dictatorial.

And in **pimping** General David Petraeus, Sir, in violation of everything this country has been assiduously and vigilantly against for 220 years, you have tried to blur the gleaming **radioactive** demarcation between the military and the political, and to portray **your** party as the one associated with the military, and your opponents as the ones somehow antithetical to it.

You did it again today, Sir, and you need to know how history will judge the line you just crossed.

It is a line -- thankfully only the first of a **series** -- that makes the military political, and the political, military.

It is a line which history shows is always the **first** one crossed when a democratic government in some other country has started down the long, slippery, suicidal slope towards a Military Junta.

Get back behind that line, Mr. Bush, before some of your supporters mistake your dangerous transgression, for a call to further politicize **our** military.

---

Good night, and good luck.

BRAVO!!!
BRAVO!!!
I love you KO.  You are the BEST.
Dear Mr. Olbermann,
Thank you from all rational people everywhere for finally identifying our President as the leader of a dictatorship, for that is what it is.  He has indeed betrayed us as have all who have done his bidding and elected him.  It's a good feeling at last not to have to beat around the Bush.
GOOD FOR YOU KEITH!! WELCOME BACK!  KEEP IT UP, WE NEED MORE PEOPLE LIKE YOU TO REPRESENT OUR FEELINGS ABOUT "MR BUSH"!  THANK YOU!
A simple "Thank you" for saying what needed saying when no one else has bothered.

Dear Mr. Olbermann:
  Thank you.
Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!  Welcome back.
My 79-year old mother called me and asked me to find this commentary in print so she could share it with her 82-year old sister tomorrow morning.  Rock on, Keith!  Gert (79) and Lorraine (82) in Maine are cheering you on.
The HYPOCRISY of calling HYPOCRISY.

Like a leaky faucet that won't stop dripping. KO returns to reak havoc and discontent on the nation while he carrys on and on and without making any real discrediting point except somebody find a plumber and shut that man up!
Way to go Keith!

The people should not be afraid of their government, the government should be afraid of the people.

Bush and his right-wing cronies have put this great country on the road to down right fascism.  He should be impeached and imprisoned but instead the tax-payer will have to support his sorry for the rest of his life while it takes decades to undo his "evil-doings"!

It is time more people got together and forced a change to the sham that is going on in Washington.  There used to be a time that we could do this, but now those who speak out get Tasered or stifled by the jack-boot that masquerades as law enforcement in the country.  It will only get worse with the Ministry of Homeland Security.
I was about to give up on the show after the O.J. crap everyday, many thanks to the surgeon for getting the fearless and brilliant Olbermann back in the chair !
The comment tonight was spot on.  Our president will hide behind the skirts of anyone close enough to grab, or push them in front of the oncoming bus.
Seventy-two senators who did not seem to remember that whole "bills of attainder" prohibition found in our Constitution.
Dear Keith,

Thank you so much for a job well done!  We have watched you every night since the beginnings of this awuful Iraqi war and are so grateful that you are able to delineate our views so elegantly.  God bless you and your employer msnbc.

Right on, Mr. Olbermann! You seem to be one of the very few journalists who truly "tells it as it is" and speaks for the many voiceless citizens of this country who love our country, support all men and women in uniform but despise hypocrisy and lies from those who are supposed to be responsible and respectable leaders. Keep up the good work!
It is truly funny to hear you react so vehemently to the very same types of comments that your type continually spew and lash out at those on the Repubic... oops... Republican Party.  I sense that we hit too close to your flawed truth when your pompous reaction is so full of elitist jibberish.  Maybe the true misnomer of the discussion is Democratic Party - maybe it needs to be changed to the Soros Party.  The Democratic Party wreaks of and has finger prints of his ever looming and omnipotent presence permeating throughout it.  Wouldn't want you to allow someone to "dis" your sugardaddy, aka - George Soros.  He's become the creeping malaise of the movement to discredit those things that this country holds dear - you know.. things like honesty, trustworthiness, honor, truth - heaven forbid that those things would continue to be propulgated and stood up for by leaders for which you give absolutely no respect or credit for standing up for right vs. wrong.   I think your view suffers from the fallacy that there is no black and white -  there are just mutliple shades of gray.  Your vision, in my never so humble opinion, is flawed and suffers from a foggy and clouded perspective.
Good night, and good luck.
Keith, you are really, really magnificent!  Welcome back.
Now THAT is what I call "playing hurt"! BRAVO!

As an aside, it looks like the WH has found a new Jeff Gannon, in that Washington Examiner reporter that played the "allez" to Chimpy's "oop."

Also, during the debate on the "BAD MoveOn.org! BAD MoveOn.org" amendment, Sens. Boxer and Durbin got in the face of John "Yes, There Are More Idiots In Texas" Cornyn, who was bleating out the talking points about how horrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible MoveOn's ad was. They asked what the difference was between the MoveOn ad and the egregious (AHH-OOH-GAHH!) dumped on Kerry and on Max Cleland. Cornyn said that Kerry and Cleland were politicians, and should expect that kind of thing.

(Boxer put up a competing amendment to Cornyn's, using the same language but including a line slamming ALL negative advertising such as Swift Boat and the Cleland ads. It fell 51-44, with 3 abstaining, just like there were 3 abstaining votes on the 72-25 vote. Wonder if those 3 votes are running for President. Hmmmmmmmmmm...)

Aside from the fact that there's a HUGE difference between MoveOn playing rhyming games and the RadRelRight morphing Cleland's face into Saddam Hussein, Cornyn basically said it's perfectly okay to lie like a rug if the person you're lying about is your opponent on the ballot. Guess Lincoln and Douglas went about it all wrong. You learn something new every day...
Once again the Bush and republicans demonstrate the only thing they have under control is the democratic party
Welcome back Keith, and based on the above I can only say, thanks for not losing anything other than a superfluous body part last week.  Keep on fighting the good fight.
bravo, and thank you.
It has long irked me that ever since Gingrich's clan briefly dominated Congress, it seems that most Republicans purposefully leave the "ic" off of the end of the word "Democratic" when it refers to the Democratic Party.  A disgruntled blogger can retaliate by calling the Republicans "Repubs," but this is not appropriate for respectful inter-partisan discourse.  A better strategy is simply to stand up for respect.  Thank you, Mr. Olbermann.
The best Special Comment ever, Keith.  And you had just a little more than the right amount of O.J. -- perfectly acceptable.

The only other suggestion I could make to improve tonight's show would have been, "More cowbell!"

AMEN!! Thank you for calling out the hyposcrisy of this administration. Men who served like Max Cleland and John Kerry were BRUTALIZED by the Republican Party. Now someone has the spoine to question a General that the Republicans support, and President Bush calls it disgusting? When George Bush knows what it's like to be shot at, have bombs go off within feet of you; when he knows what it's like to see what it's like to lose limbs, then he'll have some moral high ground. For now, he's the turd we can't scrape off our shoe until Jan 2009.
Good to have you back, KO, and in top form, too! I've about given up on this blog, but I'm stickin' with you!
Thank you for so eloquently and cogently expressing the feelings of so many of your equally outraged but less articulate fellow citizens.
"Mandela's dead" - George W. Bush, September 20, 2007

Enough said about President Jackass!!

"Country in Crisis" why?? OH MY GOD!!

To our "trolling trio", there's NO overcoming this one!!

Thank you, Keith! Right on! You're back!! Amazing!!!
Thank you, Keith. Masterful and intelligent as always. Of course, they will not hear. No matter how strong your argument is, the political fanboys will attack you. But you have truth to back you up. To some of us, truth has value.
Countdown this shines a little brighter and thanks again Keith!
Thank you Keith. That one was about 103mph across the plate.A little Chin Music Drysdale style.
So does this mean only Republican Troops have to go to Iraq? The Republican Senate,Congress, and Guard and the Decider.Since they are the ones protecting us all.Put em in coach starting with the Commander In Chief the V.P. and all the rest of the cronies,McCain,Warner,McConnell! They're some real Special Forces! The Army belongs to the Republicans well let them die and pay for it.If your a Republican you GO fight for their Oil!Us Democrats will defend the Country according to the guidelines outlined by the Constitution that would be the defense of this country and not some scam for Oil.
So far they've put us in the hole close to 500 billion dollars for this are and going deeper as they ask for more before Bush and Company slips out the back with "no new tax."
We need a "War Tax Now On Oil Profits and Imports without letting it be passed on to the consumer ," attached to any appropriations legislation to pay for it and the deficits this war has created.
Put em Coach it's Their War!Lead on,General Mitch McConnell! You Sly Desert Fox,I knew you had read Rommel,The enemy will laugh themselves to death. If it gets too tough we will call out the the Republican Guard and Colonel L. Craig who'll "blow" em to sandstone.Whoever they are Mission Accomplished Sir Decider.Who are they this week.Who's playing Bin Laden's role?He pops up like Republican Ad in the Box as Needed.I'd say that guy is long gone except for when needed.By the way Mr. President where was your Admiral Fallon quote? He doesn't do ads for MoveON!
Now, this is one courageous Republican (San Diego Major's reversal on gay marriage):

Unfortunately, they are few and far between.
Dear Keith,
Glad you're back, you could have probably used a few more days- but we appreciate your dedication. thanks for the Primal Scream,I feel better, but not much more hopeful.
Our Democracy has been hi-jacked. We have no say in the governments agenda. They are all blowing smoke up our collective asses. I firmly believe that if we are to make any head way in resolving the Middle East crisis( Afghan, Iraq AND Iran) theis adminsitration must be de throned- impeach investigate prosecute and punished for Derelction of duty and treason. But it is obvios our Congress will not act. So I wrote a letter to the UN- asking them to follow through with their considerations to bring Bush & Cheney up on War Crimes. I also requested they use thier influence in any way they can to help US restore our Democracy and rule of law. Sad day when a citizen of a 'democratic' nation must request assistance from an exterior entity to help give the people back their voice and control over their own govt. Since our congress seems oblivious to our demand, perhaps the pressure from our global neighbors will do the trick. I would greet them as liberators, with flowers. I could even learn a new language- I'm SO PISSED and disillusioned and worried where this ride is leading with DICK at the wheel. If nothing else I want the UN to public humiliate and discredit this admin- let the world know they understand it is NOT US, it's the work of THEM. Help US regain our Democracy and we will return (build) the America we all admire and depend on.
Welcom back,Keith
sorry the shit's still mesed up.
One of the very best commentaries I have ever heard!  Please continue with the truth--we have had enough from the current administration.
Come back a little testy, did ya ?  I understand that you liberals are upset because "W" has used you again. By having a vote on Gen Petreaus , it takes the conversation off of the war on the ground and puts all Democraps on record. Now Hillary has voted for MOveOn , which is a wonderful thing. Will make some great adds !  That damn Bush has tricked you again - and the liberals leadership is clueless.
Thank you Sir.
Jeez, this is awful.  Update this blog!
Thank you Keith for your continuing effort to keep our country's freedom of speech alive.
What a fantastic return for our Mr. Olbermann!  Welcome back.  It is so good to have you.

Even though we've had 6 years of this President and his party's hypocrisy, I am still astounded at how low they can go.  What they did to Max Clelland and John Kerry was unconscionable, yet they whine and cry about the moveon.org ad.  I am ashamed to say that both of my Senators voted to condemn moveon.org.  In doing so, they have condemned me as well. That is unforgivable.
"...that merits this pissy juvenile blast at the Democrats on national television?"

Absolutely one of my favorite lines.  Pissy, indeed.
There is no "WAR" in Iraq, there is only an "OCCUPATION" of Iraq.  We can't allow '43' to continue to frame the debate.

There are 487 days until the end of this regime on 1/20/2009
There are 410 days until election day -- 11/4/2008

And we are counting down.
Welcome back Keith!!!!!!

Thank G-d you're back.  I was getting tired of OJ being the lead story on Countdown.  Your commentary last night was fabulous.
thank you, thank you, thank you!  Now can we start impeachment proceedings?
Carol, Long Valley (9:40 AM Post): Have you not heard Carol, it is a war because we are fighting al Quaeda in Iraq as well as Shiite, Sunni, Iranians, Syrians, Saudi Arabians, Cubans, Argentinians, North Koreans, Brazilians,  Palestinians, Chinese, Russians. The next thing you know Bush will be claiming those from Iceland have joined the war against us in Iraq. Then we will have to expand the war and send troops to freeze their asses off in Iceland.
How about a long piece on how Bush has stacked the deck against the rest of the country.

If congress defunds the war -- he can continue it by appropriating (stealing) money from other defense budget buckets.

If congress passes mandatory down time -- he can use (abuse?) the Reserves and the National Guard.

Next election, he can send his own mercenaries to 'blue' voting areas in 'purple' states to harass the voters -- like he did in Florida 2000.

He's got Faux News to trumpet his every lie and swift boat his every opponent.

Finally, there was no coverage of the DC peace rally over the past weekend -- whatever happened to it?
Your special comment last night was wonderful.  I almost missed Countdown b/c I was sick of the OJ stuff.  How many Americans have died in Iraq since OJ was arrested?

Keith, when you get invited to the White House, will you take me with you, please?

Beth Coger
Danville, Arkansas
Great work again Keith.  Keep it up. You articulate the truth so well. We need that in this country now more than ever.
Keith, you are a complete tool. You are exactly what is wrong with this country.
thank you, thank you, thank you!  Now can we start impeachment proceedings?
