The President of Hypocrisy

The full text of Keith's Special Comment: President of Hypocrisy, after the jump.

So the President, behaving a little bit more than usual, like we'd all interrupted him while he was watching his favorite cartoons on the DVR, stepped before the press conference microphone and after side-stepping most of the substantive issues like the Israeli raid on Syria in condescending and infuriating fashion, produced a big-wow political finish that indicates, certainly, that if it wasn't already -- the annual Republican witch-hunting season is underway.

"I thought the ad was disgusting. I felt like the ad was an attack not only on General Petraeus, but on the U.S. Military.

"And I was disappointed that not more leaders in the Democrat party spoke out strongly against that kind of ad.

"And that leads me to come to this conclusion: that most Democrats are afraid of irritating a left-wing group like Move-On-Dot-Org -- or **more** afraid of irritating them, than they are of irritating the United States military."

"That was a sorry deal."

First off, it's "Democrat-ic" party, Sir.

You keep pretending you're not a politician, so stop using words your party made up. Show a little respect.

Secondly, you could say this seriously after the advertising/mugging of Senator Max Cleeland? After the swift-boating of John Kerry?

But most importantly... making that the last question?

So that there was no chance at a follow-up?

So nobody could point out -- as Chris Matthews so incisively did, a week ago tonight -- that you were the one who inappropriately interjected General Petraeus into the political dialogue of this nation in the first place!

Deliberately, premeditatedly, and virtually without precedent, **you** shanghaied a military man as your personal spokesman -- and now you're complaining about the outcome, and then running away from the microphone?

Eleven months ago the President's own party -- the Republican National Committee -- introduced this very different kind of advertisement, just nineteen days before the mid-term elections.

Bin Laden.

And Zawahiri's rumored quote of six years ago about having bought "suitcase bombs."

All set against a ticking clock, and finally a blinding explosion... and the dire announcement:

"These are the stakes - vote, November 7th."

That one was ok, Mr. Bush?

Terrorizing your own people in hopes of getting them to vote for your own party has never brought as much as a public comment from you?

The Republican Hamstringing of Captain Max Cleeland and lying about Lieutenant John Kerry met with your approval?

But a shot at General Petraeus -- about whom you conveniently ignore it is you who reduced him from four-star hero to a political hack -- that merits this pissy juvenile blast at the Democrats on national television?

Your hypocrisy is so vast, Sir, that if we could somehow use it to fill the ranks in Iraq you could realize your dream -- and keep us fighting there until the year 3000.

The line between the military and the civilian government is not to be crossed.

When Douglas MacArthur attempted to make policy for the United States in Korea half a century ago, President Truman moved quickly to fire him, even though Truman knew it meant his own political suicide, and the de-ification of a General who history suggests had begun to lose his mind.

When George McClellan tried to make policy for the Union in the Civil War, President Lincoln finally fired his chief General, even though he knew McClellan could galvanize political opposition - as he did... when McClellan ran as Lincoln's presidential opponent in 1864 and nearly defeated our greatest president.

Even when the conduit flowed the other way and Senator Joseph McCarthy tried to smear the Army because it wouldn't defer the service of one of McCarthy's staff aides, the entire civilian and Defense Department structures -- after four years of fearful servitude -- rose up against McCarthy and said "enough" and buried him.

The list is not endless -- but it is instructive.

Air Force General LeMay -- who broke with Kennedy over the Cuban Missile Crisis -- and was retired.

Army General Edwin Anderson Walker -- who started passing out John Birch Society leaflets to his soldiers.

Marine General Smedley Butler -- who revealed to Congress the makings of a plot to remove F-D-R as President -- and for merely being approached by the plotters, was phased out of the military hierarchy.

These careers were ended because the line between the military and the civilian is... not... to... be... crossed!

Mr. Bush, you had no right to order General Petraeus to become your front man.

And he obviously should have refused that order and resigned rather than ruin his military career.

The upshot is -- and contrary it is, to the Move-On advertisement -- he betrayed himself more than he did us.

But there has been in his actions a sort of reflexive courage, some twisted vision of duty at a time of crisis. That the man doesn't understand that serving officers cannot double as serving political ops, is not so much his fault as it is your good, exploitable, fortune.

But Mr. Bush, you have hidden behind the General's skirts, and today you have hidden behind the skirts of 'the planted last question' at a news conference, to indicate once again that your presidency has been about the tilted playing field, about no rules for your party in terms of character assassination and changing the fabric of our nation, and no **right** for your opponents or critics to as much as **respond**.

That, Sir, is not only un-American -- it is dictatorial.

And in **pimping** General David Petraeus, Sir, in violation of everything this country has been assiduously and vigilantly against for 220 years, you have tried to blur the gleaming **radioactive** demarcation between the military and the political, and to portray **your** party as the one associated with the military, and your opponents as the ones somehow antithetical to it.

You did it again today, Sir, and you need to know how history will judge the line you just crossed.

It is a line -- thankfully only the first of a **series** -- that makes the military political, and the political, military.

It is a line which history shows is always the **first** one crossed when a democratic government in some other country has started down the long, slippery, suicidal slope towards a Military Junta.

Get back behind that line, Mr. Bush, before some of your supporters mistake your dangerous transgression, for a call to further politicize **our** military.

---

Good night, and good luck.

First welcome back Keith the Commentary was Right On.Does this mean the President will be criticizing
Admiral Fallon who really has a little more than MoveON about General Prateus as well as the the criticizing Senate.Admiral William J. Fallon is the head of CENTCOM, responsible not only for Iraq but for all our current and potential military activity in the region.
http://www.ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=39235
It's well known in Washington circles that Admiral Fallon has a far more realistic view of the war, considers the "Surge" a failure (as do most security experts), and wants to substantially draw down our troop presence in Iraq.
I would only suggest we look to our experts Mr. President to inform us of the capabilities of our Iraq
Command. We already know yours don't we Mr. Mission Accomplished.
After what the Republicans did to Kerry in the swift boat ads and after what they did to Bill and Hillary with the media and the courts for years and years, they have a lot of nerve complaining about anything MoveOn.org has done.

They are getting a tiny taste of their own medicine. They can dish it out but they can't take it. Poor wimpy Republicans.
Hi Keith, don't my post count telling the truth. I've posted many time, only to have my post not show up on your blogg.  You tell it as it is but when I say the very same truth at 10:45 Sept 21, 2007 or anytime other it gets by passed.  Well,  my wife and I missed you, we won't stop watching the show as we feel that you and CNN Lou Dobbs give us the straight talk.  Only I'm sorry your staff doesn't think my comments are of any value.  What special formula does it take to have a blog posted?

Watch only and shut up, is that the way your staff wants. Am I not intellegent enough for your program and Blog.  At least MSMBC First read publishes my answers, that way I know that my voice against this president gets heard.  Thanks and welcome back, we will keep on watching your show and posting on your blog, maybe some time in the future it will appear on your blogg. Just think waiting until March of '08 for another assessment of the "SURGE" our nation will have lost 4,300 men & women in Iraq. Don't you like my figures.  75 dead military/mo. just waiting for more Petraeus lies.
Keith, you are a complete tool. You are exactly what is wrong with this country.

If this comment means that Countdown is like a dental tool giving the Bush administration a well-deserved root canal, then it makes perfect sense to me.

Paging the Boys from Brazil.

Great projection, Larry.

Seems the only ones tricked by Bush on this blog are YOU and your brainless colleagues, scotty small caps and Encyclopedia Wayne.

Good thing breathing is reflex, right Larry? Lord knows, Bushie certainly doesn't have time to call you every second and tell you "inhale, exhale".

Close your mouth and breathe! Are you trying to catch flies? You're scaring the children!

scotty small caps, this means you! No, I don't want to meet you in the restroom. Stop with the flirting! I'm hetero and happily married!

Enough playing with the trolls' small minds. After awhile I start to feel like a kid burning ants with a magnifying glass.

No offense meant to ants by my preceding comment. They undoubtedly possess much greater thinking and reasoning skills than the resident trolls. No ants were harmed during the typing of this message.

Keith, you're the greatest. We loved you on ESPN, we love you on MSNBC.

The wife calls you "Olbie" - that's love right there. Nothing says love like a pet name.
Bravo, Bravo -- our country needs heroes like you more than ever.
you rock!
Spot on comment as usual. Welcome back! We missed you!
Welcome back Keith.  Allsion get a good job filling in but I really missed the wpitw and your superb "special comments".  I disagreed with the moveon.org ad because it was a distraction from real issues.  I've been saying for weeks since the ad came out, where was the outrage when the republicans dishonered our military veterans for political purposes in the 04 elections?   Kerry could have gotten a cozy job stateside like Bush but he chose to go and fight for his country.  In the meantime, Bush was in my home state of AL campaigning for republican "red" Blount and Cheney  was working on deferrals 1 thru 7.  For goodness sakes, Max Cleland was a double amputee.  He gave both of his legs for the country he loves and republicans have the audacity to trash him.  Where was the outrage?  Should we take time from the Senate to condemn this action?  Should we hold all republicans responsible for petty, senseless, attacks for "political purposes?"  I remember even hearing the usual conservative trash like Hannity making jokes about these attacks.  That should be Bill Orally's "most ridiculus item of the day."  Dems need to step up to the plate and say what in their hearts and not be afraid of who they offend.  Our country has been hijacked by the three stooges (Moe-Bush, Curly-Cheney, Larry-Rice)and I'm ready to take it back.  The 4th and 5th stooges have already resigned (Shemp-Rumsfield, Curly Joe-Gonzo).
Once again, welcome back keith.

Oh one more thing regarding OJ.  During his attorney's press conference, he was very upset about several news agencies having attorneys on shows that did not really really represent OJ although they said they did.  I found it funny that one of the news agencies was FAUX news (the other was CBS morning news).  Apparently they didn't do their homework and had someone on who really didn't represent OJ.
Keith,
Just wanted to echo the comments above.. I'm sooo glad you're back. My wife, who used to work in medicine, told me in pretty graphic detail about how serious a burst appendix can be. You're a real trooper and a great American.

The others are right - this may be your best comment ever. Every time I hear "our" "President" (and I'm using both terms very loosely) use the phrase "Democrat Party" I want to throw a brick at my TV set. Thank you for lobbing the proverbial brick for me. The man (as well as the Party he represents)is the personification of hypocrisy - trotting out the military as their political mouthpieces so that when the oppposition disagrees with the message they (the Republic Party) can say that Democrats don't support the military. Of course, it's ok to trash a disabled vet (Max Cleland) if he's a Democrat. What they did to him has infuriated me beyond measure - here is a man confined to a wheelchair because he lost both legs in Vietnam. Then the Republicans (headed by two men who have never fired a shot in anger) question his patriotism! How dare they!

Anyway, it's good to have you back, Keith. Hope your speedy recovery continues.
Thank you, Keith! I think the Democrats who voted to denounce the MoveOn ad should be taken to task for why they voted against freedom of speech. Keep up the great work.
Finally, there was no coverage of the DC peace rally over the past weekend -- whatever happened to it?
Carol, Long Valley NJ (Sent Friday, September 21, 2007 10:00 AM)

Because it was a non event and not newsworthy
Nice posts K.Bouge/Mich., BA, David/Denver, and many others who see the handwriting on the wall here. Thanks Keith for speaking up.

The people are going to have to rise up and take back their government and their country from both sides of the isle. The Dems have not yet learned that in order to be effective they have to redefine themselves and act like they stand for something without allowing the republicans, outside organizations or other extremist personalities to define it for them. They have to become stronger and more defiant in the face of those like Bush and the current republicans. They have to study and learn the fabric of this country and what incites the American people. The have to shed themselves of this anti-war label and redefine themselves as anti-senseless-war. They need to learn how to speak to the American people without looking like has-beens, also-rans or juts plain insincere cry babies. And they need leadership beyond the bickering that will occur between the Dem front runners in the next several months. And finally they have to learn to play the game better then the republicans who can take this country down a very bad road yet have enough support to do it because they are better at defining who their oppostion is to the American people then the oppostion (the Dems) are at defining themselves.

Oh Keith, you were awesome!  I thought for a minute there that you were going to "pop a stitch or two" and I loved it!  And you are so right! Bush is so audacious that I can't stand to even look at him, let alone listen to him.  Keep it up Keith, you're the best!  And thank you from the bottom of my heart!  We'll get our country back yet.  Ellen
Charleston, S.C., streets closed as cops probe suspicious package

OK OK.  Who is sending Larry packages?  Maybe it's just his Bill Orally gear.
You are either fearless or stupid to stand up to this foolish and asinine president.
always well written show...and to think tony bennett won an emmy to heave out some words.
Milken and Billo:my how they enjoyed your absence!
Boy Keith O, you really told um this time.  You said nothing of substance there.  So he did not respond to the Israeli strikes against Syria,  because there is highly sensitive diplomacy going on there, and until that has fully resolved, nothing should be said.  By the way, Syria is just as dangerous as that kook from Iran.  They harbor terrorist, and they aid and abet the iraqi insurgency.  That sir (the phrase that you use for "emphasis"), is why that question wasn't answered.

So your thinking is MoveOn is in the right, and General Petraeus has betrayed us.  Well, General Petraueus was asked to go in front of Congress.  Congress wanted to hear from him, not Bush.  Petraeus is on the ground so he has more objectiveness than you have in your little pinkie.  Has there been some disputed evidence that contradicts his testimony, of course there is, it is not black and white, and there will be disagreements within the military.

When I read your idiotic rant called special comment, all I saw was the extreme left frothing at the mouth saying bravo, right on.  But you sir, did not state one fact, you claim that war veterans lied about John Kerry without any proof.

I became so enraged at your use of the media to promote your extremist left, MoveOn.org platform.  You have no credibility, you are nothing but a partisan hack sportscaster.  As for the rest of you koolaid drinkers with your blinders on, wake up, and try to be objective for a change.

By the way, thank got we didn't grant Habeus Corpus to those scumbag foreign terrorists.  They deserve no rights.
Methinks that '43s' hissy fit over criticism may have backfired, as referenced by the following Washington Post article.

MoveOn Unmoved By Furor Over Ad Targeting Petraeus

By Perry Bacon Jr.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/09/20/AR2007092001005.html

quoted from the article

"For MoveOn's supporters, the special notice from Bush may only serve to validate its confrontational style. "I think he just raised MoveOn several million more dollars," said Erik Smith, a Democratic media consultant. "
Dear Kieth,
Thank you! Thank You! Thank you!  For another much needed Special Comment.  If only your colleagues would do the same with even half the passion.

I have made myself hoarse the last week screaming at the TV every time a pundit was asked about the "Move On Ad" and they failed to point out the abject hypocrisy and arrogance of the question even being asked after all the "military" bashing they have done to Cleland, Kerry, Clark, Webb, Hacket, Murtha, the 7 Generals and any soldier who questioned Bush policy.  It drives me crazy how Bush and Cheney so blatantly hide behind the military and have done so for the last 4 years and no one points it out in the media let alone hammers them for it as they should.

Imagine if Bill Clinton had appeared only in front of military personel after bombing Afganistan during the Lewinsky affair.  Or what if he had sent his General to Capital Hill during the Bosnian War when the Republicans were so against military action and "nation building."  Clinton would have been skewered by the Republicans and media.  I can't imagine how this president and this Republican Party could have gotten away with this without the willing cowardice of the media.  Forget Katrina.  The media is still tip-toeing around the Republicans because they yell the loudest and make the biggest stink when they are "offended."  Get over it.  Stand up for the truth and let them have their hissy fit.  It will show them for the shallow cowards that they are.

Thank you for pointing out the "line" between civilian and military that should not be crossed and that the Republicans are NOT the party of the military no matter how much they proclaim or imply it.  One of the biggest ignored stories last year was how 90% of the Iraq/Afganistan vets running for national office were running 90% as Democrats.  That fact should have been repeated ad-nausium until the Republicans shut up.

Thank you for your show and thank you for saying what others in your profession do not have the guts to say.

I missed you so much when you were sick and I am so glad that you are back.  Wednesday's show was way too much OJ.

Keith, I am SO SICK of it being OK for the Republicans/right wing/conservative nutjobbers to get away with murder and say anything they want, no matter how obnoxious or beyond the pale,  but whenever the Democrats or anyone on the progressive/liberal side of the coin has the stones to say anything bold and opinionated and tell it like it is, the Republicans/far right/dinosaurs bellow their deep disgust and dismay, and in exactly two seconds whoever said it is falling on their knees offering abject APOLOGIES and taking it all back!!!!! All I could think with this Moveon.org flap was "ENOUGH WITH THAT CRAP ALREADY!!!!" And then you returned and, as usual, with a Special Comment, expressed all of my anger and rage. It is obvious that your intelligence and eloquence of expression were not surgically removed along with the appendix, and I am grateful to see it. Thank you!

Rest assured that at the Cubs game today, I'll be thinking of you. OK, so maybe you won't be at a ballgame, but someone else at a ballgame will be thinking of you. Next best thing, right?
Just another "Bravo" to add to what I hope becomes an overwhelming din of praise. Thanks you sir!
Another great special comment and once again, right on the mark.

Not only is this Move-on.org criticism extremely hypocritical, considering the Swiftboat, etc., blasting that the republicans have done, when are they going to stop supporting and denounce Ann Coulter and her vile comments, like the ones she spewed about the 9/11 surviving spouses?

On another note:  I was completely shocked when the President was asked about Israel's attack on Syria he had venom dripping and said, "No comment".  He's the leader of one of the most powerful nations in the world and he has "no comment?????"  This man is the most incompetent President this country has ever had.  He's a disgrace to this wonderful country of ours.

You had a standing ovation in my living room after your commentary. Most of my friends say you're too kind to Bush by calling him "sir." However, you're a classy and respectful guy. You're audience is growing my friend.
K O you are the Patrick Henry of our time.God bless you for having the courage confront the Bush/Cheney regime.
Excellent special comment last night, as usual, Mr. Olbermann. And it's good to see you back on the air following your surgery. Thanks as always for holding the president and others in the Washington elite accountable for their words and actions, instead of just reporting the text of the press releases the way so many other news shows seem to these days.
You're the only person in public with the intelligence to defend MoveOn for telling the truth. Thanks. My Democrats are AWOL and Reid could never be any leader of mine. Reid, Hoyer and Clyburn won't even accept your email.
Don't worry scotty small caps, you're still the President of Stupid. Larry, you can be Vice President, because Cheney looks like a mouth breather just like you. Wayne, since you're so smart (LOL), you can be the entire Cabinet.

It's the Stupid Administration!
I can't wait for some GOP fan to make a YouTube video crying and yelling at us to "LEAVE MR BUSH ALONE!!!"
Keith,

Forget the Democrat(ic) stuff.  He is his father.  Remember Geo. Sr. and his pronunciation of Sadam?  It is the same thing.  To acknowledge it, means it will go on forever.

Thank you for your comment tonight and welcome back.  The comment from True Liberal is neither True nor liberal.

Dan Abrams actually started off pretty strong following your comment lead.

I look forward to tonight.
In all fairness, the cartoon we interrupted was Teen Titans
Thank you Keith!  Thank you for speaking the truth and not mincing words about it.  Thank you for not being intimidated.
Terrific program last night Keith. On top of your game as usual.

And speaking of games, as the calendar continues to wind down MLB's regular season as we look towards the playoffs, and regardless of how far they go in October, I'd just like to send my congratulations to the New York Yankees for their absolutely stunning season. In my humble opinion, the NYYs have managed to become the best team in baseball, again.

As the Yankees have proven, anything can happen. It takes 162 games. Every team will win 60 games, every team will lose 60 games.

It's the other 42 that really count.

Pennant races. Nothing like 'em.
1)Welcome back!
2)Thank you for expressing the views of freedom loving persons everywhere. You have elegantly expressed the correct tact on the issue of pointing out this presidents hypocrisy and ineptness.
3) Your arguments aid me in debunking the republican talking-point-spew at work. THANK YOU! Fred.
Bloody Fantastic!  Elated you are well and back in primetime.

PEACE FRIEND!!
Come back a little testy, did ya ?  I understand that you liberals are upset because "W" has used you again. By having a vote on Gen Petreaus , it takes the conversation off of the war on the ground and puts all Democraps on record. Now Hillary has voted for MOveOn , which is a wonderful thing. Will make some great adds !  That damn Bush has tricked you again - and the liberals leadership is clueless.
Larry Charleston, SC (Sent Friday, September 21, 2007 8:29 AM)

Larry,  why do you continue to think that it is cute when Bush "tricks" us?  If he "tricks" me then he "tricks" you also.  He is tricking all you Bushwacked people into blind followers.  I question my Government because I CAN, for now at least.  People who don't question and sit all googly eyed at the fine nut case running (ruining) our Democracy scare the sh*t out of me. I intend to continue to question every little thing this man does until he leaves office.  Then,  my fondest hope is that he retires to Texas and fades into what will certainly be a shameful footnote in our Country's history.

My suggestion to you Larry,  watch Bill O,  I hear he needs the ratings.
Bush is the head hypocrite that word should include people who wave the flag and say "Go Get 'em boys" but don't want to be one of the boys if they are physically fit they are slackers and love what this country gives them but do not love this county enough to fight for it. Love your show.
Keith, welcome back!! You were greatly missed sir and a return with your best "Special Comment" ever made my day!!

Hypocrisy indeed!! GREAT JOB SIR!!

PEACE!!

Update, please????
Way to go Republicans -- guess what?  According to MoveOn.org, your little foray into banishing free speech may have backfired.

"By midnight, over 12,000 people had donated $500,000—more monay than they've raised any day this year—for a new ad calling out the Republicans who blocked adequate rest for troops headed back to Iraq.  "

I firmly believe in Karma, and all the republicans who hate the troops, hate habeas corpus and hate freedom of speech will surely get what they deserve.
You said:
“So nobody could point out -- as Chris Matthews so incisively did, a week ago tonight -- that you were the one who inappropriately interjected General Petraeus into the political dialogue of this nation in the first place!”

Let me expose the real liar here, you sir Mr. Olbermann.  The fact of the matter is Petraeus was MANDATED BY CONGRESS to testify, the president did not interject Petraeus into the political dialog.  Proof:  Section 1227 of HR 2206 –

A Vieira Santa Fe, NM 12:37 PM..I don't know if you are familiar with our "Resident Trio" but they would be great for this..
Now all that is left is to wonder when the "outraged" hypocrites who denounced MoveOn.org will pass a similar resolution to condemn Ann Coulter's excesses, or all the Swift-boating that already sailed, etc.

If it weren't such a blatant slap at Constitutionally-protected speech, this would be "political theatre" as vaudeville.
Larry- I had to look out my window to see if pigs were flying because you were right.  bush did win this one he got democrates spending the day talking about an ad instead of ending the war.  The Senate democrates who can't pass any meaningful legislation on the war got sucked in to voting on something completly meaningless except for the fact it will be used in the negative campaign ads republicans are so good at.   I have to give props to my guy Obama though, he saw the ruse for what it was and refused to vote.
Dear Mr. Olbermann,
You keep talking about hypocrisy and Fox Noice and right-wing nuts on your TV program everynight and forget to look at your "co-worker" and how dumb and uninformed they are.
Last night I watche MSNBC and the anchor "Brizinksky" had the father of one of the 9/11 victims on her show and they were talking about Iranian President Ahmadinejad visiting ground zero.
The guest, I assume, was very uninformed and said things such as "9/11 hijackers were trained by Iran" and "people in Iran were celebrating" after 9/11 attach. Nothing is furthur from the truth. Iranian people were the only people in the Middleast who went to the streents and lit a candle in memory of the victims and Iran was one of the first countries in the region which conemds the attacks and there is absolutely not connection b/w Iranian government and 9/11 hijackers (hell, even Rush and Fox News do not make these connections).
Anyhow, your anchor "Brizinski" just sat at her anchor chair and did not bother to comment her guest that the hijackers were not trained in Iran and people in Iran did not celebrate the death of more than three thousand people.
Where do you guys find this "anchors" what is her qualifications? Does she even follow the news? Does she even know where Iran is on the map?
Excellent commentary last night.  It is good to have Keith back.
