Countdown Thursday: The President of Hypocrisy

Posted: Thursday, September 20, 2007 8:58 PM by Countdown
Filed Under:

Meet the Press: This afternoon sixteen more United States senators -- 72 in all -- voted to toothlessly condemn a newspaper ad by the liberal anti-war group Move On dot org... than voted yesterday to guarantee that American troops get to spend as much time at home between deployments... as they now do on the front lines of Iraq. Our fifth story on the Countdown: With their yes votes, 22-Democrats... apparently reacting -- like Pavlov's dog to a bell -- to the criticism voiced by President Bush in his news conference this morning... when he said he was quote "disappointed that not more leaders in the Democrat Party spoke out strongly against that kind of ad." And so, the fallacy of who is really supporting the troops, continues.
Campaigner in Chief: The President turns the White House into a campaign headquarters...O.J. Simpson goes home...Ken Burns comes here to discuss his extraordinary new documentary, "The War"...And a Special Comment tonight, on the first President who forgot you weren't supposed to turn military men into political figures. All ahead on Countdown.

ODDBALL: A real man of genius, a kid bull fighter, and a nude robber.

Ken Burns' 'The War'General David Petraeus, in his September 11th senate testimony on the progress of President Bush's surge in Iraq, called the soldiers fighting in that war "the new greatest generation"... And while there's no question that the soldiers on the ground in Iraq are equal to the best that the United States has ever turned out... they are but a fraction of the entire generation.  Which is to say that while they and their families are sacrificing for the good of our country...the entire generation, the large majority of this generation, is not. In our third story on the Countdown, Iraq plays no part in what is undoubtedly the finest television documentary series of the last decade -- or more. But for "The War" by Ken Burns -- it is, inevitably, backdrop.

TiVo Alert!  To our number two story on the Countdown, Keeping Tabs... And the only good thing about the last week: I wasn't here for OJ Simpson's latest fiasco. Let's see...Memorabilia in a Las Vegas hotel room.  Someone had a gun. Lots of cursing.  Arrested and jailed.  Ten felony charges.  Lost the smirk. Released on bail. Got it. And now, Mr. Simpson's back home.

WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD: Billo, Michelle Malkin and a certain large headed FOX News tv host vie for Keith's comeback honors.

The President of Hypocrisy: Keith's special comment...text found here.

Just when you think things can’t get worse, something wicked this way comes:

“People are still recovering from Saddam Hussein’s brutal rule.”

Yeah, sure.  It’s withdrawal from their addiction to Saddam Hussein that makes them kill each other … and us.

Actually, I think they got over it, already.  Right now, they’re still recovering from us.  No, wait.  Right now, they’re still dying.  I don’t think they can start recovering until they stop dying.

If you ask me, Mr. Bush could use some lessons in speechifying.  As I used to tell my friend Alice:

“Always speak the truth – think before you speak – and write it down afterward.”

Once again the Republicans have retreated from the moral high ground to slither along with a president who has no moral ground whatsoever. The sad thing is the number of Democrats that went along for the ride.
Meanwhile, the troops are looking at rotating in and out of Iraq faster than the White House can spin the war and children will die of totally preventable diseases, because their parents cannot afford medical care and medicine.
The people of America need to find their outrage and bring it to the polls. I do understand that the Democrats do not have the votes on their own to override a veto or pass veto-proof legislation, but they are all that stands between the Constitution and the power-grabbing despot in the White House who has sent his oath of office through the shredder so often it is now powder. If they are not willing to take their oath of office seriously, they do not need to represent us.
The text of the oath of office for the Senate:
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God."

Welcome Back, Keith. As good as your replacement were, you were missed. And talk about coming back like gangbusters!
The use of Congressional time and resources to vote on a resolution condemning a political ad is absolutely despicable -- and totally useless.  If that's what they think is important, then we can expect that it's all they will be doing next year.  Instead of acting to end this crazy war, they'll just be arguing about the political rhetoric.

I'm getting really sick of listening to these people argue about nothing, and doing even less.

"If any one of them can explain it," said Alice (she had grown so large in the last few minutes that she wasn't a bit afraid of interrupting him), "I'll give him sixpence.  I don't believe there's an atom of meaning in it."
We are glad you are back.As many others say, you are
a wonderful antidote to the lying, cowardly
thugs on the right.

Stay well.

Jim and Alex Segal
Good Generals have to be politicians. George Washington, US Grant, John Pershing, Dwight Eisenhower, Omar Bradley, Doug Macarthur, Coline Powell, Tommy Franks etc etc etc. If they wern't we could have never won the Revolution, Civil War WWI, WWII, Korea, Gulf War.
#3 -- I wonder, does Mr. Bush understand the price of war?

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.

John McCrae, 1915.
Mr. Olbermann...you are a BEA...U...TIFUL sight!! You look freakin' sweet - not bad at all for a burst appendix. :D And, I've never been more proud to hear "pissy" and "juvenile" on TV!

I just don't know what else to say about Congress anymore; I kind of vented it all out in my post for last night's show. "Our President" could give a rat's hind quarters about the will of the people (never has); Congress apparently is too chicken and/or also doesn't give a rat's hind quarter, either, about the mandate given to them by the American people in November 2006. So, what's left to do?

Ugh...really starting to depress myself here...Keith,I am SO GLAD you're back, and you look great! Please don't overdo it, though.

Everyone have a good evening.

#5 Here are our DemocRATS showing their lack of spine again.  Is anyone starting to come around to the idea now that unless we vote for and elect only third party candidates, we are through as a democratic republic?
Oh, BTW, Bush was drunk or hung over.  Again.

Thanks for abbreviating the OJ crap.  On the disgust-o-meter, he is right up there with Bush, Cheney, and ALL our politicians!  What our politicians do, or fail to do is newsworthy, albeit in a negative way.  What OJ does belongs in an Oddball segment.

Olbermann gave OJ the coverage he deserved tonight: about 50 seconds. None of the other alleged news show ran any critical coverage of Bush's disgusting rant except Keith. Glad to see him back!
GREAT return show, Keith!!!

I hate to say it, but I might skip Sunday Night Football to watch "The War."  I have a huge love for Ken Burns' documentaries.

I celebrated when I heard about the special comment.

I laughed when you commented on OJ in the intro to the show: "I thought I had that removed on Friday."

I laughed when you suggested that Billy's TAZERing has put him in this state.  And I agree, he should do it again, live on air.  Maybe a way to increase his Friday night ratings, eh?

I watched the special comment with rapt attention.  I shall comment on that tomorrow, when I'm not about to go to bed...

Welcome baaaaaack!!
This story, as you tell it, is like most all you do regarding the President of the United States, simply negative in content and view. I, like almost all Americans, do not agree with the President on all his decisions, but I still hold the utmost respect for the office of the President, something that has gone by the wayside for many years. The media will support an ex-president who, by his lack of moral fortatude shamed not only himself, his family , but the entire United States but will not in even a small way support our current leader. The use of "freedom of speech" is misused by you and most of the media. The real purpose of "freedom of speech" was to allow the freedom to express our opinions without causing undo hurt to, not in spite of others. If the time and resources that are being spent finding ways to degrade the President and his decions was spent trying to find solutions to the problems we are facing we might just be able to get things back on the right track. The negativity in the press has done little to pull the American population together. It has done the opposite. It is separating the public into groups that really can't seem to figure out what to believe or what they can do to help. The old cliche' "united we stand, divided we fall" still stands true. We are a divided nation and appear to become more divided as time presses on. Let's try a different approach to the news and present news that can once again bring us back to the strong nation we once were. Try to be positive on your stories and not so negative. You have the perfect format for making contributions that would cause the public to draw together instead of taking sides on the issues we face. This would be called working together for the better cause of the people. Instead of "I", try "we".
#1. Dubya and Karl patented Hyp-Hop. #2. Memorabilia will be all OJ will have after this. An odd fetish, don't you think? #3. Hope Ken is still alive when this 'War' ends, so he can make a film about it. #4. Huh? Everything is Political to Dubya, so don't don't even go figure. #5. Politicians "Support Themselves" and if the troops get something out of it, it's collateral.
Mr. O. Thanks for your comments concerning THE PRESIDENT OF HYPOCRISY today.
Bush said.."it's one thing to attack me, it's another thing to attack someone like General Petraeus".  Well Presidente Hypocrite..Keith did a fine job of attacking you with his Special Comment.  "I heard someone say Mandala.  Mandala's dead"!? Oh the night time talk shows will have a good time with this.

The Dems have to start getting off their butts and start doing the people's work.  Grab those cojones and kick butt! They can do better.

Ken Burns was a great guest.

Thank you for choosing Michelle Malkin again as WPITW..she truly deserves it..as does Billo.

So glad OJ is featured (why at all) on Keeping Tabs..instead of regular news item.

Oh, all that beer..I'm partial to Miller Genuine Draft.

and Keith looked none the worse for wear..glad you're back Keith..

"Mandela's dead" - George W. Bush, September 20, 2007

Enough said about President Jackass!!

"Country in Crisis" why?? OH MY GOD!!

To our "trolling trio", there's NO overcoming this one!!
Keith, I'm very upset with Democrats in Congress.  Granted Republicans aren't exactly a picnic either these days, but I was so excited after the 2006 Mid-term elections.  Optimistic that we'd get some sanity back, some stability and balance back in government and some serious changes and investigations.

However, Democrats are elected by a landslide, given what amounts to a majority in both the House and Senate, along with an overwhelming majority of a mandate to finally put an end to all the lies and scandals and most of all this failed Iraq war policy.  Then they turn around and continue to ignore the American public and cave in to a 29% lame duck President.  Thus Congress has an 11% approval rating, what are they waiting for single digits to do something?

When the Republicans were in power and in full control of Congress, they were heavily critical of Democrats for filibustering and Bill Frist and the like always threatened to use the "nuclear option," to go by majority rule to pass through legislation.  Yet as the tables are turned this time around it's the Republicans convienently filibustering, but somehow the Democrats do nothing to counter and not once had Harry Reid invoked the so called "nuclear option."

I just don't know anymore, other than to say for Democrats and Republicans alike in 2008, two words: Ned Lamont, two more words: Dennis Kucinich, and two more words after that: Ron Paul... and you get my point.
Silver-spoon Bush wants to veto the bill to provide health care for the four million children who don't have health care...Bush and the Republicans think life is sacred only when it is in the womb...once that sacred life is born, Bush and the Repubs want nothing to do with supporting this supposed sacred life...here are some bootstraps, pull yourself up...to bad your parent(s) cannot afford health care...deal with it….don’t look to Bush or the Repubs to help support your supposed sacred life...just more hypocrisy from Bush and the Repubs...
Good good Friday morning!! This post kind of sort of relates a little bit to one of the subjects of last night's show. As was pointed out last night, THE WAR begins on PBS this Sunday. BUT...it's also the season premiere of THE SIMPSONS and FAMILY GUY. AUGH! So, if anyone else was in the quandry I was a couple days ago, DVR/tape one and watch the other! Check your local PBS station, but THE WAR will be repeated in the Indianapolis area each night at 10:30.

Just tryin' to help my fellow WWII, SIMPSONS, FAMILY GUY fans!! :)
Welcome back Keith - you were a bit fiesty last night!!  Hope you're not overdoing it.

Story #5 - And everyone wonder why I want to vote Libertarian!!  Why dems couldn't abstain or forgo the vote is beyond me.

Story #3 - Thank you so much for your Ken Burns interview.  I look forward to his show on PBS and really look forward to this story about WWII.

I thought your Real Men of Genius was funny.

Thank YOU for your lack of OJ last night.  You DID astonish me, but then again, it was YOU that was on.
(None of my posts seem to get through the moderator here, but I'll give it one more try before giving up on this blog.)

What's even worse than the Swift Boat Liars and the vicious attacks Max Cleland was the recent successful effort by the GOP to block Sen. Webb's bill increase the time between combat tours for soldiers serving in Iraq. Life goes on for Kerry and Cleland, despite the hateful attacks against them, Bush his Republican flunkies are destroying the lives of soldiers they hide behind when they try to justifyi their disastrous war. And that, of course, doesn't include thousands of dead soldiers and tens of thousands who have been horribly wounded mentally and physically for life, many of them without adequate medical care.

Bush supposedly thinks the MoveOn ad is disgusting. I f think Bush is downright loathesome. I can't even stand the sight of his smirking, dishonest face anymore.
Keith, I watched your show last night and found it very entertaining even though I am conserative. However, I recognize the flaws in this administration. But I was wondering if you felt Clinton owed us an apology for dismantling our military and for not trying to fight terrorism. Let's be fair. Clinton hurt our country from a security standpoint and everyone knows that is a fact but many won't admit it.

Cue scotty small caps, Larry the Mouth Breather, Encyclopedia Wayne, and Ghetto Tom DC...making inane comments RE: Hillary and Hsu, Dems this, Libs that...in 5...4...3...2...1...
" . . . all the odds are on the man who is, intrinsically, the most devious and mediocre — the man who can most easily (and) adeptly disperse the notion that his mind is a virtual vacuum. The presidency tends, year by year, to go to such men. As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

The President and his cronies understand the price of Oil and care nothing about the blood of your kin in Flanders Fields.
Senator Reid change the 60 vote Rule in the Senate. You have the power to do that if their are no turn coats. Then we can proceed to have a Government of and for the People.
Kick it the way K.O. did last night Harry.
"I was wondering if you felt Clinton owed us an apology for dismantling our military and for not trying to fight terrorism. Let's be fair. Clinton hurt our country from a security standpoint and everyone knows that is a fact but many won't admit it."

Just curious, Jump Jeff (and please realize that I am calmly posting this in hopes of a calm and reasoned response): exactly how did Bill Clinton "dismantle our military"?  As I recall, he presided over the last successful war that America waged... in Bosnia.  (A war which, I might add, we were invited into [we did not INVADE], and for which we had formalized goals and objectives, including an exit strategy.)

And why do you think he did not "fight terrorism"?

I personally believe that we were MORE secure under Clinton, chiefly because his policies presented the USA to the rest of the world as a responsible, resonable partner in the world community... not as a rogue superpower that does what it wants and the rest of the world be damned.

WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!
http://www.factcheck.org/more_mitt_missteps.html

"... This is untrue. The peak in defense spending that Romney speaks of was in the Reagan administration. It is not correct to say that the Clinton administration began to cut U.S. military forces. No matter how you measure defense spending, President George H.W. Bush had significantly trimmed it by the time Clinton was sworn in. And it was Bush's administration, not Clinton's, that first boasted of a "peace dividend."

Measured in what economists call "constant dollars," adjusted for inflation, defense spending declined by nearly 15 percent between Reagan's last budget (for fiscal year 1989) and the elder Bush's last budget four years later. The decline was just under 13 percent between Bush's last budget and Clinton's final fiscal year (2001). In other words, the buying power of the dollars spent for defense declined more during Bush's four years than during Clinton's eight. ..."

Just ONE LOUSY TIME could we have a criticism of Dubya that didn't involved someone mentioning Bill Clinton? I'd even settle for an HONEST mention of Bill Clinton - he made plenty of real mistakes, pick one of those and not some made up, revisionist baloney.
Welcome back, KO. Nice nod to your doc last night.

And a roar of approval on your Special Comment!

News to share and look into: be aware that Yahoo may be blocking distribution of the Countdown daily newsletters? This is happening elsewhere on the web, as well. I personally have not received a Countdown update from your associate Carey Fox (or its bot?) since 9/10/07. TrueMajorityAction.org, CommonCause, United for Peace and Justice, Act for Change as well as Truthout emails are being scuttled by ISPs.
check this out: http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/091307Z.shtml

Again, welcome back, and thank YOU for having the you-know-what to speak truth to power.

I think the right mugshot for Malkin's future use was found. Keep it!
i have a major concern about The War: i think it may engender all kinds of support for our current mess because so many people will not understand that WWII stands out as different from almost anything else. second, the constant hyping of this movie is very annoying. we also have to deal with the fact that mr burns failed to include any information about hispanic people who fought in the war; this was added on later, and not effectively, according to the review in the new yorker, which was very negative. if mr burns, who claims to have no political agenda, can make the country see that this Messopotamia is a lot different from WWII, well, maybe i'll consider watching the rerun. but for now, and as a historian, i say, no thanks mr burns. we cannot afford to continue lionizing militarism over the public good.
Wow...not to pat myself on my back TOO MUCH, but I know a lot of you have been wanting to know how various Senators have been voting (or not voting) on recent legislations that have been turning me (and I'm sure others) prematurely gray. I FIGURED OUT HOW TO DO IT!! Here is the link to how the Senate voted on the Webb-Hagel bill:

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=110&session=1&vote=00341

From here, you should be able to keep going under the "votes" link to see the activity of the last few days. If this link doesn't work for you, try "the Google" for United States Senate and try the same links.

I RULE, but, GGGGRRRR...., I'm sorry to say that Senator Richard Lugar does not, at least in this respect. *&^%$#@?!
A WORD OF WARNING - if you are going to go to the Senate votes website to check out the voting activity, do it at least 30 minutes before or after eating unless you have a super strong constitution; some of what I saw made me want to upchuck.

THE BEST CONGRESS MONEY CAN BUY!!
Thank you.  OJ is back where he belongs.
So so sorry...back again like a bad penny...working and teaching at a college, I want to extend my thoughts and compassion to everyone at Deleware State University affected by the shootings there early this morning.
With apologies to Jane Austen:
“He was not welcomed home very cordially by the trolls. Mr. Billo wondered at his coming, and thought him very wrong to give so much trouble....  But loyal Countdown viewers, not very laconic in their expressions of pleasure, were really glad to see him...  The evening conversation, when they were all assembled, had lost much of its animation, and almost all its sense by the absence of Mr. Olbmerann.”

Great show last night. (No offense meant to Allison Stewart, by the way.)
Amy Ringenbach Wayne, PA Friday 10:55 AM..Amy, I have been wondering about that myself. I didn't even give it a thought until you mentioned it.  What the heck is going on???
K. Collins, USN (9:40 PM Post): "Good Generals have to be politicans". Please allow me to disagree. Good Generals have to be good "Diplomats". There is a big difference. Regarding your examples some of these Generals were good diplomats, not politicians. George Washington as with Eisenhower and a few others you mention hated the role of a politician and refused to play the role. Any success Washington had as a General and President resulted from his ABILITY TO COMMAND RESPECT from those he led while also having the ability to COMPROMISE and SEEK COOPERATION by way of common sense approaches to problems and relying on the advice of others (even from those who opposed his initial strategies). He was a good General and a good Diplomat. He was not a politician.
Sam Friday 10:55 AM..I thought she looked very much like a rabid dog myself..
Keith,
WOW!!! What a comeback! So pleased you're back!!
PLEASE continue to produce your Special Comments on a regular basis, and do spare us from the tabloid rag reporting on self-absorbed insignificant morons. There are far too few programs in the MSM dealing with serious, critical issues in an intelligent manner. We want more of those, sans the inane blather about brainless "celebrities". Thank you!
The USA, and the rest of the world, needs to hear (for at least one hour daily!) a voice of reason cogently presenting those substantive truths which affect us all.
A Canadian fan
Great show last night, Keith. Wonderful to see you again, and even MORE wonderful how you disposed of OJ with only a few words and a lot of disdain so you could stick to the REAL news. I was wondering: have you and Ken Burns kissed and made up over the issues you had with his "Baseball" series, because it sure looks like it--you seem to be good buddies now and you had nothing but praise for "The War." It's definitely a must-watch for me, as I can no longer ask my mother what it was like to live through it.

Your return was like a breath of fresh air. Take care of yourself and keep on keepin' on!
Keith, I strongly disagree with your support of the Moveon.org ad attacking General Petraeus.  This ad only helped the Bush administration and hurt the cause to withdraw our troops from Iraq.  I am a moderate and loathe the extreme left as much as I loathe the neo-cons.
As much as I want to end this war in Iraq and I don't believe attacking someone that puts their life on the line helps end the war.  Please stay focused on the real problem, the liar in the white house.
Bravo Mr. Olbermann, bravo.  One of your best programs ever.  Keep it up, you've spoiled me.  Congress, quit wasting everyone's time with these stupid useless resolutions.  It means nothing!  Why don't you pass a resolution condemning Excederin headache # 43 for lying to the citizens of this coutry?  For entangling us in a moronic occupation that has cost thousands of lives for no good reason?  For not going after the terrorists that actually attacked us?  For setting a new record on government spending?  For...well, I don't have time to list all the transgressions, I need to get busy putting food on my family.  Congress, the worms in my yard have more backbone than you do.  I have never seen such an ineffective impotent group of politicians in my life!
You can check to see how your senators vote here:

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/vote_menu_110_1.htm

There are advantages to living in a very blue state.  Both of my senators voted for the Webb Amendment, both voted against the (R) anti MoveOn ad, but both vote for the (D) version, that didn't mention MoveOn directly.  Both voted for the Levin Amendment to reduce the size of the Iraq forces.

Way to go Senators Lautenberg (WWII veteran) and Menendez, I'm proud of you.  Now, if you could just convince some of those chicken hawk, neo con Republicans to come over from the dark side, the world would be a better place.

IMHO, "lower case" (as opposed to “small letters”) would be more appropriate for Scottie, your feelings?

Bottom feeder, base person, bottom fish, hungry puppy, lowest common denominator, riffraff, scum, slopsucker – “lower case” -  Viva la differance!!

I am laughing out loud!  One of my all time favorite quotes from "excederin headache #43"!
I am so sick of this war and the phony debate over it. The phony debate about the phony debate.  The lack of integrity and  all the self serving  in our leaders is appalling. The senate wasted their time on this Petreus ad nonsense and yet the day before the bill to restore habeus corpus was defeated. A right that was granted in the MAGNA CARTA! Where is the outrage??? I am ready to barf. I am ashamed and embarrassed to be an american.
I wonder if Mr. Olbermann intends to apologize to Pres. Bush for his misrepresentation of the facts?  Somehow I doubt he has the strength of character to do so.

You bunch of mindless Kool-Aid drinkers fall hook line and sinker for his crap.  I doubt if the combined gray matter of y'all would contain enough neurons to power a fly.
Rocky Mountain Guy, Colorado (Sent Friday, September 21, 2007 12:51 PM)

HUGE thanks for what your Rockies did to "the hated ones", the Dodgers!!

Nothing is better than a Giants' win, unless it's a Dodgers' loss. Possible elimination is all the sweeter!!

KUDOS AND THANK YOU FRIEND!!
I can't believe this flap over the MoveOn.org ad.
Hey Repugs it's called freedom of the press. At least the MoveOn ads have some basis in reality. Unlike the Swift Boating of John Kerry or the sliming of Max Cleland. Juxtaposing OBL's mug with Max's. That was beyond despicable.
Quite different when the shoe is on the other foot eh Georgieboy?
