Countdown Tuesday: Fear it Now

Posted: Tuesday, September 25, 2007 9:20 PM by Countdown
Filed Under:

Fear Factor:  The socalled Patriot Act had nothing to do with patriotism...So it should come as no surprise that the "Protect America Act" has little to do with protecting Americans... nothing to do with protecting their constitutionally guaranteed freedoms like privacy... and everything to do with the White House's effort to operate outside the law. Our fifth story on the Countdown: The changes that were made last month to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillence Act were apparently made under false pretenses -- Congresswoman Jane Harman on that, in a moment. First. The Bush administration is tonight fighting to make those changes permanent... seemingly by scaring the Democratic majority into compliance. Hey, it has worked before.

Listen To MeGeorge W. Bush giving advice on Iraq...To Senator Clinton, or Senator Obama. Advice on how they can stay there, plus keep Gitmo going. Seriously.

ODDBALL: Lady Ninja Bandits, a white koala, and a lawnmower race.  YAY!

Mr. 9/11: Around the country tomorrow night, supporters of Rudy Giuliani will hold house parties to raise money for his presidential campaign. In our third story, the Countdown to 2008, if you attend the one in Palo Alto, California, when you reach into your wallet to pay your way in, you will get morbid proof that, despite his denials, Mr. Giuliani is exploiting the events of September 11th, 2001. He first based his consulting business... and then his campaign...

Stalls of Justice: At tomorrow's hearing for Idaho Senator "Men's Room Larry" Craig, the senator will not appear... despite the fact he is asking a court to withdraw his guilty plea... because he did not quite understand what he was doing... at an earlier hearing, which he also did not attend. But if you think the guilty plea means Craig's days of public service are over, well, he's still lending a hand to his fellow man. You should excuse the expression.

WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD: Duncan Hunter, Billo and....Billo vie for tonight's top honors.

The Halo EffectThe comparison, in terms of consumer madness, is to the last Harry Potter book, or the I-Phone. The comparison, in terms of first-day profit, is to the last Spiderman movie. The money, and the madness, are about... Halo Three. Our number one story: great -- now, what's Halo Three?

“I really don’t want to go among mad people.”  Little Alice (Sent Tuesday, September 25, 2007 12:11 PM)

Little Alice:  Me, either.  Unfortunately, there are a lot of mad people.  Just look around.  In the immortal words of the Duchess (or Donald Rumsfeld, I can’t quite recall which):

“Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise.”

“I think I should understand that better,” Alice said very politely, “if I had it written down; but I can’t quite follow it as you say it.”

“That’s nothing to what I could say if I chose,” the Duchess replied in a pleased tone.
Keith - You are the greatest person, place and thing on planet Earth. Believe it.  Full Moon (Sent Monday, September 24, 2007 6:19 PM)  Have another sip of kool aide and lets take a long walk over a short cliff  J Jones (Sent Tuesday, September 25, 2007 4:26 PM)

J Jones – I suspect Full Moon was kidding.  And probably you are, too.  But enjoy the walk.
I'm INNOCENT!!!!
Seems to me the whippersnapper moderator isn't putting up messages in any particular order.  Kid, are you trying to make my brain ache more than normal?  Put them all up in order.  At least you won't lose any!  Losing them is very rude to your elders and the loyal viewers.  And WE are the reason the show is on the air.  It wouldn't last long if we all decamped.

Aunt Ornery (Sent Tuesday, September 25, 2007 8:23 PM)

Aunt Ornery:  Exactly why we should cut the snapper a break.  Where would we all be if the show didn’t last?  Personally, I would miss it.  More than I miss my comments when they don't get posted.

(Actually I suspect the snapper is multi-tasking just as fast as he/she/it can.  In the words of Willy Wonka, “so much time, and so little to do.”)
A special message for big-headed Billo:

How many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea?
Yes, 'n' how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn his head,
Pretending he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
There are 2 major political parties in America. Their is the Republicans who try to impress ridiculus policies in the US, and then their is the Democrats who do nothing but ridicule the policies the Republicans impose (and nothing more).
One of the Bill-o's has to be the Sylvia's restaurant issue!

Man, that was classic Bill-o!

WJ
The point was brought up by Mr.Alter, and K.O., as to the Democrats being boxed in by the Weak on Defense gambit by the Republicans. There was hand-wringing ... What to do, what to do ?

The answer to counter all these claims of needing more information, without oversight, by presidential fiat is simple. It is what the Republicans would have done to Al Gore, if president, about a month after 9/11. The Republicans would have exposed, aired, and kept on message that the president and his advisers ignored over 90 warnings before 9/11. The ONLY action they took was to get Secretary Ashcroft off all commercial aircraft beginning the middle summer of 2001. Acting on ANY one of the warnings COULD HAVE foiled the entire plot. But they choose to warn no-one. Not the airports, not the airlines, not anyone other than Ashcroft.

Now the same crew who ignored every warning says they need far more information to make us safe. How do we have any assurance that they won't ignore more warnings, if the political situation is ripe for another attack ?

No attacks in US? This is proof of what? The last time I looked at the stats, the Islamo-fascists (Freedom Fighters in the Middle East)have killed more Americans, delivered unto them by an illegal invasion, than BinLaden killed on 9/11. As far as the life altering injury "stats", the the US are even more lop-sided losers there.

So score-keepers, here are the stats on the Strong on Defense Republican Party.
9/11 - 3000 Americans
Iraq Invasion and occupation - approaching 4,000
Maimed and shattered soldiers - 20,000+.
Killed Iraqi innocents - anywhere from 70,000 to god knows how high.

BinLaden, still making movies.

The Republicans, as Generals, have proven to be human butchers.

Rudy disgusts me.
In following the presidential race, I'm completely baffled by people's remarks about the "inexperience" of Barack Obama.

I must confess I know little about politics... Can someone explain to me what made Bush so qualified to be our president? What were his experiences?

Or maybe my question is in regards to why people continue to spit out recycled right-wing phrases without really thinking.
Been Forgoten, Bushie Boy & Darth Vader:  all have FEAR in common.  The evil doers are so like our leaders--term used very loosely.
I want a "No President,No Congressman,Senator,House Member, govt official or appointee Left Behind Amendment", Ratified by the People the States, A test on the Constitution and one on Ethics as Well before a candidate can run.Doesn't pass he don't run,the ones there get tested as well they have 60 days to learn it.
If they don't pass its hit the road Jack including the President and Every Constitutional officer. Ethic and the Constitution. That's the guide book for the Ship of the Nation. It is on the rocks and a big wreck.
You don't pass you don't get to run.If your already in and you don't pass you have 60 days to learn it and retest, then you are out and we will have a special election.
Now I know I'm not the brightest ship in the port but I want guys that run my Country, spend my money, handle nukes and stuff to at least know the rule book and obey it. I want to them to under there are consequences if they don't and the stupid Senate 60 vote rule is a house rule not a Constitutional mandate. We are tired of excuses TV lies by the Roves,TV ads that are lies,TV money, turn off the set Mr. "No Child Left Behind?" no health care" and No New Taxes, pay for your war before Mr Big Deficits, and Liar beofre you leave town.
Might as well slap that Oil Tax proposal as well to take care of the deficit and pay back your money they borrowed, whoops stole from Social Security at least since the Reagan no new tax years and now say its your fault.Um Social Security is a Tax and they have borrowed it dry never payed back your money, and now have the audacity to blame you because they are thieves.Well I guess in way they are right some of you did vote them.Even I did this, includes the Democrats too.
Hot damn Congress get off your blooming fear driven behinds send him no money, that 60 vote rule is not a Constitutional Mandate .
And I am serious about an Amendment requiring testin of the Constitution and Ethics before you can run we don't want anyone slipping in under the fence do we Dubya?

you have not discussed the lieberman resolution amendment to the military appropriations bill 3017 that will allow the two "mad men" bush and cheney to crush i--- at their will.
#1.  Like Oceans' Eleven? Only Angels? Cheney, Rove, and Dubya? Nah, couldn't be. #2. He was at the hearings, but both times he had to go to the restroom. #3. Is Rudy gonna 'Rap' at those House Parties? #4. Did he advise any last things to kill the Constitution, altogether? #5. He promised the Demo-politicians that they wouldn't have a Blackwater Sniper in their apple tree like everybody else in America.
Maya, 11:16 pm The answer is friends in high places. No other qualifications required.
Did anyone else notice Rep. Jane Harmon(D)-CA. on Countdown with K.O. tonight discussing FISA. I rewound it 3 times to be sure I heard it right. She said “there is LIKELY to be a DIFFERENT president in 14 months”. What does she mean LIKELY ?
The Liberals around here use the word fear as if it were a talisman. Concern for our fellow citizens is not exactly fear, though deep concern is often labeled as such.
Threats to our national security are not to be ignored in this day and age.

The Liberals seem more and more to be driven by fear, so much so that they no longer know who the real enemy is.

While this site has become a bit disturbing with its celebrity worship and continuing propaganda fest, its also become interesting as a window on the accelerated disintegration of the Liberal mind.
I don't know what people in NY call it when a politician answers a call from his wife during an important speech but down South we call it P***YWHIPPED.
Keith, I don't get it, if you and I can "get it" when it comes to seeing the obvious linkages between the nexus of politics and terror, what's taking so long for those on Capitol Hill to stop the madness?  Where is our generation's Joseph Welch to call a spade a spade and finally say, "You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?"  You may be as close as we get to that Keith and I applaud your efforts on behalf of all Americans who believe in the Constitution, many thanks.
Hi, everyone. Whoever came up with the "Fear It Now" play on words to Ed Murrow's "See It Now" gets the blue ribbon for the day - nicely done! Considering the times in which we're living, I have a feeling that the irony would not be lost on Mr. Murrow.

So, was the testimony yesterday about making the current FISA permanent, even expanding it, and even talking about it ensures we're all gonna die supposed to be a 21st century version of "loose lips sink ships"?? And, I give Keith a virtual "standing O" for basically telling the Democractic members of our Congress to either $hit or get off the pot in regards to speaking out about the Constitutional abuses being inflicted upon the American people!

If I were Senators Clinton & Obama, I'd use call screening to avoid GWB's phone calls about future Iraq policy or have their assistants say they're in the bathroom or something! When GWB was speaking at the UN, if memory serves, he was fairly close to the infamous Bellvue Hospital; maybe he should've stopped in for a check-up.

And, Keith, you obviously don't live with or know any "gamers," do you! If you did, you'd KNOW what Halo 3 was! :D My husband is a "gamer" - 3 systems and 2 shelves full of games. I AM THE BEST WIFE EVER (in that regard and SO MUCH MORE). Every errand run over the past few weeks has included some stop at a place that sells games, so he could get more info about Halo 3. Once again, I AM THE BEST WIFE EVER.

Y'all have a good day!
The point was brought up by Mr. Alter, and K.O., as to the Democrats being boxed in by the Weak on Defense gambit by the Republicans. There was hand-wringing ... What to do, what to do ?

The answer to counter all these claims of needing more information, without oversight, by presidential fiat is simple. (Can anyone imagine Tom DeLay hugging President Al Gore for Gore to protect us from further harm after 9/11?). It is what the Republicans would have done to Al Gore, if president, about a month after 9/11. The Republicans would have exposed, aired, and kept on message that the president and his advisers ignored over 90 warnings, both internal and from foreign intelligence sources, before 9/11.

As far as the life altering injury "stats", the US are even more lop-sided losers there.

So score-keepers, here are the numbers on the Strong on Defense Republican Party.
9/11 - 3000 Americans dead
Iraq Invasion and occupation - approaching 4,000 dead
Maimed and shattered soldiers - 20,000+.
Killed Iraqi innocents - anywhere from 70,000 to god knows how high.

Bin laden, still making movies.

The Republicans, as Generals, have proven to be catastrophically inept. All it takes is someone with enough courage to put the historical facts on the table.

I'm too outraged by what's going in in Burma to comment on anything political today. Well, that and how poor Bill Orally is getting smeared for being a racist just because he happens to mention how surprised he was that black Americans are just like regular people and can order tea without using MF-er.
# 4 - "Listen To Me": This proves GW Bush is delusional.
As I type this, I will be responsible for the killings of Americans...the thought of even questioning the implications of the FISA Act, the Patriotic Act, the American Act, will cause more innocents Americans to die. I have probably already killed ten more American according to Mike McConnell, the Director of National Intelligence, just by saying I believe in the fourth amendment and don't want it revoked by King George's executive privilege...the same Mike McConnell who stated the warrantless wiretaps lead to the capture of terrorists in Germany then had to recant and say, we actually had warrants in the case of the German terrorists...Don't question, don't use your free speech, don't even need the fourth amendment...give up your rights and blindly follow along and trust the Bush administration that was asleep at the wheel on 9-11…we are just suppose to show blind faith in McConnell, Bush, and Cheney, et al...bin Laden, al Qaeda, the Taliban, the terrorists in Afghanistan and Pakistan, in Iraq, and Iran, and around the world are not as much as a threat to our freedoms as the people in the Bush administration...Bush's executive privilege conquers even the constitution...why not just pass legislation voiding the whole concept and replace it with Bushworld's Bill of Rights which only guarantees the second amendment....who needs the stinkin’ bill of rights…
I think Rudy and Bill 'O should team up and do a celebrity boxing match. Then we can watch their heads explode. I am terrified  of these two men and the power they have or think they have. One is a complete moron and has no heart. To have a fundraiser and charge $9.11 is sick and inhumane. Was he really at ground zero to help or was that a photo op? He does not look before he leaps and one day it will catch up to him.

On the other side of the coin is Bill 'O, what a sick, demented man. Has he ever had a normal situation with a human being without coming off as sexist, biggoted, racist, ad infinitim? He goes to eat at at normal restaruant and has to make a point of stating that black people can run a restaruant like "normal" people. What would be so abnormal about being black and a business person? Then he states he went to an Anita Baker concert and was in awe that black people can dress so nicely. He needs to take off his KKK outfit and show his face. KO, this is why I like you, no hang ups, no racism, sexism or bigotry. Thank you for doing your job and doing it like a gentleman. Peace to all, Denny!
Hi all.

Please, thoughts and prayers for a Navy family today.  The best friend of our friends and neighbors back in Chula Vista, was killed in a Navy helo crash yesterday morning in Guam. Please keep them all in your thoughts and prayers.

#5:  Yeah, yeah!  Protect nobody.  I give up on this lot in government-have to hope that the next one tries to pick this country up off its' knees.

#4:  Thanks Bush-you oh so smart man.  You still make me sick.

#3:  Another that makes me sick.  The man did NOTHING before or after September 11 that would make me vote for him-even if he hadn't changed his 'beliefs' to fit his new wannabe neocon image.  He's a loser.

#2:  YAWN! Let's move on-nothing to see here.

#1:  The NUMBER ONE reason I didn't allow my boys to play at one of our neighbors homes:  I don't think that Halo is really an appropriate video game for young elementary school kids to be playing.  I guess some parents don't get or don't care about the ratings of these things.  Crikey.

terrorism: the use of force or threats to demoralize, intimidate or subjugate...esp. such use as a political weapon or policy...per Webster's dictionary.
It is despicable that intelligence from an unreliable source would be used as leverage to force legislators to vote a certain way.  I never thought in my lifetime that my government would resort to such tactics to keep Congress and its citizens "in line".

Terrorism has always been present in the world.  The difference is now I fear our current leaders won't hesitate to use any method, including "terrorizing" us, to get what they want.
Maya.Portland,OR (11:16 PM Post): In regards to your question of Obama it is simply a question of perception. But normally someone who has held the office of Governor (which Bush did) is seen as having more experience having run a good size govenrment entity. But as we know it does not make someone any more qualified to be President as has been proven in the last several years. You can bet the opposition will use the lack of such experience against Obama. He just has to remain above the fray and to continue to speak of and detail out his plans for America. Frankly, I myself do not necessarily agree Obama is ready for such a daunting task, but he certainly would not come close to doing as terrible a job as GW Bush has done. In fact, he just may a breadth of fresh air. We shall see. One thing, don't get your hopes up if you support Obama. Hillary is going to take this nomination. It all comes down to who has the machine behind them unless one day the people of this country denounce the machine and truly nominate and elect a person of their choice. We need to eleminate the electoral college as well and elect a President by popular vote.
Good morning. Off topic from last night but sure to be covered tonight, check out the results of the voting concerning what to do with Barry Bonds' record-breaking home run ball:

If Bill-O thinks the food @ Sylvia's was good,
I wager he'd O-really like it without spit.
I was really glad to see the Halo coverage last night. What can I say, I'm a geek.
Talvenda. what happened to Darth Vader in the new release ??  Came back as Mr Good to save the world ! Watch out what you wish for , Mr Cheney is our savior according to Hillary and her darth Vader comments ! LOL
Did anyone else catch the Bolivian President on Jon Stewart last night?  The man actually kept his campaign promises, and he did so within 8 months.

He suggested to America that if we think that our government is broken, that we should fix it.

O J (Sent Tuesday, September 25, 2007 9:28 PM)

OJ -- For some reason, I'm starting to think you may need help.
There is no "WAR" in Iraq, there is only an "OCCUPATION" of Iraq, and Iraq is fighting it's own civil war.  We can't allow '43' to continue to frame the debate.
It has been 1,607 days since the war was ended and 'Mission Accomplished' was declared on 5/3/2003
Most Americans and most Iraqis are tired of the "occupation" of their "sovereign nation" by our "invading force".  It's time to leave.

There are 482 days until the end of this regime on 1/20/2009
There are 405 days until election day -- 11/4/2008

And we are counting down.
ATTN GEORGIE:

The offical UN recognized name of the country is Myanmar, not Burma.  It hasn't been called Burma since the late 80's.  I understand that Burma is a lot easier to pronounce but if you want people to take you seriously you must pronounce countries by their correct names.  Who am I Kidding??  Nobody in their right mind will ever take you seriously. Please stop embarrassing my country and go help Rudy host his $9.11 fund raising party.
I can’t believe this “protect America Act”!   People in foreign countries have rights too, the intelligence services should not be allowed to just arbitrarily spy on foreigners outside of the United States!  Before collecting intelligence on anyone outside of the United States some liberal FISA Judge should take a look.  Heck they might be trying to collect intelligence on one of our friends, and that could come back and bite us in the butt!
As a liberal I was a little dismayed at Keith for not even mentioning the Little Rock Nine on the 50th anniversary yesterday.  Or talking about Jena last week.  I know countdown is a political show, but not all politics is foreign policy.  Pretending the civil rights movement fixed all things racial doesn't make it so.  Furthermore, racism is the basis of the republicans fear campaign.  There arguement always revolves around "them" more specificly those "brown people". Those brown people are coming to take your job, those brown people are coming to blow us up, those other brown people cannot be allowed to speak to your children because they will make them evil.  We have come along way since 1957 but we still have a long way to go.  Remembering where we have been helps us learn that sometimes we are far more dangerous than "them".
Rudy told the NY Times that he wanted the same ad price as Moveon.org but I haven't heard anything on him making up the difference on the misquoted price.  Moveon stepped up and paid the difference of $77,508.  Where is Rudy on this issue?

It's time for the NY Time collectors to follow Rudy around and do their best Stewie impression, "Where's my money man?  Where's my money?  Don't make a fool of me man." (favorite episode)
Dear Bill O'Reilly,

I recall you receiving a caller to your radio program a while back who mentioned Keith Olbermann's name. If my memory is correct, I believe you wanted this caller to be arrested for committing what you thought to be the ultimate sin, mentioning Keith Olbermann's name.  I was never a fan of yours because I thought you were too right wing, too rigid and phony in all matters. So the only reason I knew about this caller was because Keith Olbermann told us this story.

Anyway, I remember thinking, geez, for a Keith Olbermann fan, this caller who called into your program was well spoken and articulate. He seemed to understand that we live in a democracy and we were allowed freedom of speech.

I also remember thinking, geez, this Bill O'Reilly person has all the makings of someone who was wanting perhaps a sort of dictorial society.

I have to tell you, I thought Keith Olbermann's fan was a true American.

He probably dresses nice too.
Dubya plans on gettin' some mileage out of the killing of the Buddhist Monks in Mayanmar (Burma, Pegu).  A touch more of the Hypocrisy-Thing, since his Fundamentalist Councils, long ago labeled Buddhist of all types as Demon-Possessed. (The favorite term of the Demon-Obsessed.) Om Mani Pay Me Hung, Dubya.
P.S. Bill O'Reilly:

You really shouldn't be a puppet for the Bush Administration. They lie.

And now possibly one million Iraqi's are dead.

You shouldn't be "For War" against a part of the world you know nothing about. You don't even know anything about our country for goodness sakes.

WE LIVE IN A DEMOCRACY.

TRANSLATION: FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

TRANSLATION: ANTI-WAR U.S. CITIZENS ARE NOT LEFT WING LOONIES. WHAT WE ARE CITIZENS WHO DO NOT WANT OUR COUNTRY INVADING COUNTRIES WHO DID US NO HARM. GET IT?

THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION LIES. WAKE UP.
Will you update this blog and cease ignoring many comments? Please?
Carol, Long Valley NJ (Sent Wednesday, September 26, 2007 9:59 AM)

Carol -

I did and was very impressed; it's too bad he can't run for president of the US!!

I loved his "Axis of Evil" comment at the end, most appropriate!!
I'm shocked, shocked that the Bushies would actually
lie to congress to plant and exploit fear to get their way!
When one thinks about it what do the Repugnicans have to run on. Crony Capitalism nah that won't do it.
Tax cuts for the wealthy ? That's been tried and failed. Wrapping themselves up in the flag? That's wearing thin. Jesus and family values? See above.
Many evangelical are getting hip to the fact that they've been used by the Repugs.
So just what do the Repugs have to run on.
Oh yes the unholy trinity of smears fears and queers.
What a country!
O J (Sent Tuesday, September 25, 2007 9:28 PM)

Please bring something to the blog; if not, go away. Stop exploiting the deaths of two innocent people, if you think you're funny, you're not!!

I find your comments disgusting!!
Maya 11:16 P.M. It's because those who spout right-wing phrases are incapable of thinking. Most are incapable of speaking and are only capable of communicating through a series of gestures and grunts.
Walking is problematic  for most right wingers as well. If you look closely at one you can see the scars and inflammation on the dorsal surface of their hands as a result of a lifetime of knuckle walking.
Oddball. Not that odd. Now a White Lady Koala Ninja Bandit Lawnmowing Service, THAT would be Oddball.
If Rudy somehow becomes president it will be a huge  disaster comparable only to this administartion.
Did anyone else catch the Bolivian President on Jon Stewart last night?  The man actually kept his campaign promises, and he did so within 8 months.
-Carol, Long Valley NJ (Sent Wednesday, September 26, 2007 9:59 AM)

Yes. It was a very good segment of his show.
Comedy Central arranging interviews with presidents...
You really have to survey the entire media landscape to piece together some resemblence of news.
