Countdown Friday: Hypocritical Condition

Posted: Friday, September 28, 2007 8:39 PM by Countdown
Filed Under:

General Dissent:  To paraphrase "Body Heat", Sometimes the hypocrisy comes down so heavy you feel like you should wear a hat. A conservative publication calling General David Petraeus a "sycophant" in its cover story... A conservative jack-in-the-box... Comedian Rush Limbaugh... compounding his "phony soldiers" comment... first by denying that he'd said what he said... then by adding Congressman Jack Murtha to the list. Our fifth story on the Countdown: for some reason there does not seem to be a George Bush-led race among Republicans to blast either Limbaugh or "The American Conservative" the way they so happily wrung hands over the MoveOn.org Petraeus advertisement.

The Edwards InterviewElizabeth Edwards joins us -- on the campaign, on her husband's campaign to accept federal funding and the limitations they provide.

ODDBALL: More mascot violence and the worst wrong tape ever rolled in a sports report.

The Clinton InterviewOther than the periodic appearance of Angelina Jolie, or the guys who started You-Tube, or the President of Malawi, or the head of Cisco Systems... They are not a stand-out-of-the-crowd, kind of crowd. Yet, in our third story on the countdown -- the 400-plus attendees milling around a New York hotel for the three days of the annual Clinton Global Initiative... made 245 new philanthropic pledges which will positively impact the lives of just about... 100 million people. Not a bad way to spend a little over half a week. The last part, now, of my interview with the man, **of** initiative.

Who Farted?: Inside the Tom Cruise movie flatulance story.

WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD: A german factory worker, traffic engineers of Seminole County Florida, and David Horowitz vie for tonight's top honors.

Race & O'ReillyIf you think Bill O'Reilly capable of anything, you are mistaken. For days now, he has argued-- sometimes with black people-- that his comments last week about black people were not offensive...to black people. In our number-one story tonight, there is one thing O'Reilly appears incapable of doing... despite his claim that he was taken out of context, he seems incapable of playing any tape that would put into context... his surprise at the civil demeanor of black restaurant patrons.

But tell me more about where I can get a bucket.  Tucker is the one I really can't stand watching.
Anomaly (Sent Thursday, September 27, 2007 8:57 PM)
Anomaly, I'm the wrong person to advise you on that one since I've always been accused of having the big head, I use my mamaws galvanized washtub.  Allspice (Sent Friday, September 28, 2007 7:40 PM)

In which case, Allspice, all the additional equipment you would need to watch Billo would be a lead liner for the washtub and a big loofah -- for fun.
Ok, we know Billo is losing it, and as long as he's losing it, there will be something to report on.  When he's finally lost it, (if he ever does go from losing it to lost it), that will be the end of this gimmick.  Can you just ignore him for a while, please?  I don't think you would really like to be known as the man who made Bill O'Reilly lose it.
he difference between a Dummycrat and a Republiar is the same difference between Tweedledee and Tweedledum.  Although they disagree on everything, they are indistinguishable, walking in lockstep.  One cannot exist without the other.
Bubba (Sent Friday, September 28, 2007 7:45 PM)

Bubba -- Exactly so.

“Ditto,” said Tweedledum.

“Ditto, ditto!” cried Tweedledee.
Hypocrisy?  Hats?  Conservatives?  Priceless.

"I can't go no lower," said the Hatter. "I'm on the floor, as it is."
#1. Hey, he was BORN out of context. #2. I suppose there is a Scientology Term for 'Pull My Finger'. #3. Let's hope they are a 100,000,000 people who need help the most. #4. Maybe Ann COulter will 'Streak' the interview. Look for a flash of Linguini with a mess of yellow string. That'll be her. #5. The GOP has too many Toy Soldiers to even begin to broach the subject.
Why don't you put Limbaugh's statements in context?  He was referring to an anti-war idiot who was indeed a phony soldier, in that he was never over in Iraq to begin with.  He made the claims and you ran with them.  When will this network take you off the air?  You are useless.  You make the terrorists proud.
On #5, I'm sure when the Democratic congressman and senators try to pass any kind of resolution condemning Rush or The American Conservative, the Republicans will repay them for their support on the moveon.org resolution by saying Democrats are again wasting time on non-binding resolutions and engaging in "political theater".
Keith,  your arguments are so one sided.... I'm beginning to believe the theory that is being floated around that MSNBC and CNN are puppets of Media Matters.  I used to enjoy you but you have become so obnoxious...   and you can believe me or not when i say that i dont mean to be disrepectful...   You, Wolf, and AC are losing big time...  I like most everyone else want to be given multiple viewpoints from which I can draw my own conclusions...   Dont ram your personal opinion down my throat.....
My brother-in-law thought that the sun rises and sets with Billo, I always thought that he was a pompous a$$.   Looks like I'm going to be winning that argument next time around.
It's a quarter to one in the morning (a brand new Saturday), which means this won't be shown until Monday morning...late. I'm beginning to get a feel for this News Hole Time Warp Blog.  What if we all get raptured? If it's posted and nobody is there to read it, should we count the squirrel looking at it as a reader? What if he was the one who heard the tree fall in the forest when no one was there.  I mean, he is a sentient being, right? He knows a nut when he sees one.  He'd probably try to bury  Bill O'Reilly and dig him up next Spring.  Anyway, back to time and space. This time, I'm spaced.  Talk to you all on Monday, from Heaven if I have to.
Pamela Put-down - I am unaware of everything Larry has written to or about you, and I don't know your background. All I know is, based on what I've read here, that I agree with Mr. Charleston concerning his evalauation of you and your unstoppable name-calling and mud-slinging. Ever tried anger-management?
Tim - why did you ask that torture question to Hillary? To make a fool of her? To make her look bad? To prove she flip-flops? She's the only hope the Dems have in 2008 and if Newt decides to run, then that hope is considerably diminished. Hillary plays center field better than Mays or Griffey Jr., but we all know she belongs in left. I guess it's just a game to both Tim & Hillary.
I never realize how much I miss Bill Clinton until I see him on talk shows that show how intelligent he really is.  Everyone can say how awful he was with his romantic involvement, but he still is so much more intelligent than what we are putting up with now.  This country needs to have someone at the helm that is articulate and comes across as if they know what they are talking about.  Our country needs to be proud again.
Cripes - posting a new thread after the show and not bothering to post the comments it gathered?  How's that going to help the conversation - or even start the conversation?

If you're not going to be around to post the comments, how about posting the thread earlier?  When you're actually up and working.

Wakie wakie.  We're here.  Where are you?
Rob Reiner is endorsing Hillary Clinton as the Democratic Presidential Nominee. Isn't his real name Meathead?
Interesting choice of words labeling Horowitz a Worst Person.
He skates around the fact that the image in the film is a dramatization of well publicized actual incidents and seems to wish to prevent anyone from stopping such incidents from happening in the future.

BTW
Did Olby ever name the Boston Globe Worst Person for running screen caps from an Asian Porno film suposedly showing US troops committing sexual assaults?
Hope you all had a good weekend.

5..I am amazed a negative story about Gen. Petraeus would be in a publication like The American Conservative.  I haven't read it, but the word "sycophant" kind of says it all.

Rush Limbaugh is a waste of space.  Big, stupid hot air balloon.  What the hell does he know about soldier anything, except maybe the ones he used to play with as a kid. He doesn't give a rats behind for anything or anyone, except himself.  I still say he and Coultergeist would make a lovely couple..but PLEASE..no procreating.

4..Bless Elizabeth Edwards.  She is trying her best to make her man's dream come true of occupying the White House before she's called away.  A very brave lady..good luck to her.
2..What, Scientologists don't fart?

1..Poor Billo "stick a fork in him, he's done" as Ann Richards former Governor of Texas said about Dubya's daddy who was on his way to losing the election to Bill Clinton. Billo's brain is fried. Is he on drugs? Does he drink? Is he going through male menopause? Do I have to keep asking these questions?..

and the expression on Jesse Jackson's face said it all..he couldn't believe he was sitting having a discussion with this bigot.
When I read about the situation in Myanmar, this great song comes to mind "People Got To Be Free"..my compliments to The Young Rascals.
These people operate like classic abusers. Distort reality, turn arguments back on the victim, blame the victim, all while acting oh so nice and fooling everybody. And the victim can reach the point where, when subjected to the abuser and his 'reality', they no longer know what is right or wrong, true or false. Their own moral compass has been replaced by that of the abuser, who sets the agenda. Ask yourselves- is this what the Dems are experiencing? Words after words, declarations following fine speeches, and then in the presence of typical Repug tactics, they seem to go into brain freeze. Any different from the abused wife who knows she must get out, but when confronted, all willpower leaves her? Learned helplessness, just the way the abuser wants it. The whole country has been the recipient of these abusive tactics. We need to educate ourselves and tell the abusers STOP! You will not do that to us any more! We know your tactics. Your reality is sick, controlling, and destructive and we reject it.
dead for Hunt Oil and Halliburton suits in Dubai.
What's the deal with MSNBC's online video?  I don't have cable so I watch Countdown off the website.  It used to be formatted for Windows Media Player.  Now all I can seem to find is Adobe Flash files.  The quality stinks.  Bring back the Microsoft format! (Isn't that what the MS in MSNBC stands for?)

Better yet, give us a video podcast of the whole show, with segments in the proper order, like we can already get for Nightly News.
I just learned, to my suprise the state of New Hampshire doesn't have a state sales tax because of the conservitive republicans and their family values. Not only that they don't have kindergarden or public education. When other countrys are taking US jobs because they say were uneducated, how can a state in the riches country in the world, not offer to it's children a decent education, I just got off the phone with a tech for HP I had a question about my computer. He was answering the call in India. He told me India has an excellent school system free to everyone. New Hampshire reminded me of the movie DELIVERANCE.
"Contemporary conservatism is first and foremost about shrinking the size and reach of the federal government. This mission, let us be clear, is an ideological one. It does not emerge out of an attempt to solve real-world problems, such as managing increasing deficits or finding revenue to pay for entitlements built into the structure of federal legislation. It stems, rather, from the libertarian conviction, repeated endlessly by George W. Bush, that the money government collects in order to carry out its business properly belongs to the people themselves. One thought, and one thought only, guided Bush and his Republican allies since they assumed power in the wake of Bush vs. Gore: taxes must be cut, and the more they are cut--especially in ways benefiting the rich--the better. Why Conservatives Can't Govern

By Alan Wolfe
"But like all politicians, conservatives, once in office, find themselves under constant pressure from constituents to use government to improve their lives. This puts conservatives in the awkward position of managing government agencies whose missions--indeed, whose very existence--they believe to be illegitimate. Contemporary conservatism is a walking contradiction. Unable to shrink government but unwilling to improve it, conservatives attempt to split the difference, expanding government for political gain, but always in ways that validate their disregard for the very thing they are expanding. The end result is not just bigger government, but more incompetent government. "

Why Conservatives Can't Govern

By Alan Wolfe
"Political parties expend the time and grueling energy to control government for different reasons. Liberals, while enjoying the perquisites of office, also want to be in a position to use government to solve problems. But conservatives have different motives for wanting power. One is to prevent liberals from doing so; if government cannot be made to disappear, at least it can be prevented from doing any good. The other is to build a political machine in which business and the Republican Party can exchange mutual favors; business will lavish cash on politicians (called campaign contributions) while politicians will throw the money back at business (called public policy). Conservatism will always attract its share of young idealists. And young idealists will always be disillusioned by the sheer amount of corruption that people like Gingrich and DeLay generate. If yesterday's conservative was a liberal mugged by reality, today's is a free-marketer fattened by pork. "

Why Conservatives Can't Govern

By Alan Wolfe
This is what happens when you elect people to the Congress who are Against doing the work of Congress.  You may not like the Democrats, but at least they take the job seriously.

How the Republican Congress Broke the Government

"Step One: Rule by Cabal
Step Two: Work as Little as possible and Screw up what Little you do
Step Three: Let the President do whatever He wants
Step Four: Spend, Spend, Spend
Step Five: Line your own pockets"

Broken Government, John W. Dean pages 30-49
The following is a quote from "Broken Government", by John W. Dean page 21 -- any typos are mine.

"Out of curiosity, I have from time to time checked to see what people do when they leave high-level government service, in particular the sub cabinet-level apointmentees[sic] and members of the White House staff.  There is a rather consistent pattern of those who work in Republican administrations going on to join businesses, and profiting from their government experience, while those from Democratic administrations continue with some form of public service, whether returning to academic life, affiliation with nonprofit and charitable foundations, and even further government service.  Of course, there are many exceptions to these patterns, but what I did discover confirmed what I can come to realize when I was active in the inner circles of my old party:  Republicans seek federal power because it can help them achieve their agenda, and it also helps them in their careers.  Few are driven to assist their fellow citizens, or to serve their country.  "

Info for my fellow Californians..as some of you may know, there was a proposed CA initiative campaign that would have helped Republicans "cheat" to hold onto the White House in 2008..is now history.  Using our 55 electoral votes to distribute among the Republican. All the rats involved in this have now abandoned ship. Good riddance. They were unable to gather enough signatures or get funding. CA voters are too smart to fall for this crap..at least I hope we are.  They will never be able to gather enough signatures to put an initiative like this on the ballot (not by legal means anyway). This is typical Republican tricks and deception. Initially there was a $175,000 donation by a "mysterious" donor..who was that donor? no name given, but he was a pal of none other than Rudy Giuliani. Of course Rudy says he knew nothing about this. Just another way to try and mess with our Constitution.

   * U.S. Senate passed resolution to label Iran's Quds Force a terrorist group
   * CIA: "There are some things that don't even deserve comment. This is one."
Elizabeth Edwards is a class act and we should stand in awe of her graciousness and strength. If young women in this country want a role model, they should dump Paris, Brittany and Lindsey and look to this amazing LADY.
Mr. Olbermann, that was a heck of a college picture on "Football Night in America" there, sir! :) And, you're right; the hair made the picture. BTW, I never earned anything lower than a "B-" in either my college or graduate school career. ;)
Well, looks like another lost weekend.  Still no comments posted after 6 PM Central time.  How about posting a sign that says:  It's the weekend, why bother to come here?
I know now why Keith Olbermann has this insane hate for Bill Oreilly. I seen something on the net last night about cable ratings. It seems that Olbermann has fewer than a third of the viewers that Oreilly has and it seems this has made him unhinged. And the sad part about all his ranting and raving is that no one is listening. Hello, Hello, Hello. anyone there?
Poor Keithie.
If this president had served in the military like others, He might not have been so quick to invade two foreign countrys. After watching THE WAR ON PBS anyone in their right mind would only use war as a last resort, like if the enemy was landing on our beaches, or dropping bombs on US soil. This war could have been avoided, just on the fact iraq is no match for the US and they had no intentions on doing so. The US should of sent special forces to track down bin laden and took him out if they had he wouldn't be alive today. We never even tried to avoid a war, we welcomed it, when you see the human suffering as a result, you have to wonder why would anyone want this for the brave soldiers to endure, and the civilion casuiltys. For someone that's experinced war they would only use it as a last resource, This wasn't the case.
I'd like to know where to apply for this moderator's job.  I think most anybody could do it at least as well as the whippersnapper does.
#3 Again, Clinton is a Class Act.

#5 We have been discussing this Iraq conflict on this blog for months now. Nothing changes. The American people want out of this conflict but we continuie to lose people in Iraq. The Dems do not have the leadership to get us out. The Republicans want out too but are too scared to be acccused of not supporting the troops. We have a neo-con talking head calling some troops phony soldiers, and we have Bush, what can one say. The only thing I can think of is a  prayer for the American people, for the innocent Iraqis, for the downtrodden and starving people, and for the rest of the peace loving people in the world.

"So on this day I wish for you, not as others may percieve it, but with profound esteem and with the prayer, the dawn breaks and the shadows flee away".
Sorry Keith, nice try but unfortunately you are a liar. I listened to Rush's show that day  and as usual you are only playing a snipet of what he said and what he was referring to. The phoney soldier was in fact a phoney. Did not participate in what he said he participated in. The liberals held this guy up as an American hero , but he was a liar and you either fell for his lies or intentionally put forth the lies. People who exagerrate their experience or write about things claiming they did certain things that they didn't are PHONEY . Like liberalism and liberals , who are also PHONIES. As a matter of fact , after watching you last night  , you too are a PHONEY.
CA , be honest and read the story about the phoney soldier. Rush is right. The left puts this guy up as a hero for describing the mass killings, etc. and he never made it out of boot camp , never was a corporal in the Army Rangers. Look up Jesse Macbeth and I think you'll back away from the Democrat talking points. Rush was talking about this particular guy and he is a phoney soldier. Don't believe everything you read in Media Matters , ie George Soros and HIllary , you will wind up embarassed every time !
Bill/Rochester & Carol/NJ: I don't know if you two are Mets fans, however, I have to say it was really tough watching the Mets' fans on tv as they watched their season end. It was brutal I'm sure to have to come to the realization the Mets were out of the playoffs.

I've been there, done that. It's never easy.
It's nice of the Republicans and Bush/Cheney who CLAIM that they "support" the troops -- yup, they will  "support" the troops right into the insane asylum.

- QUOTATION OF THE DAY -

"A lot of soldiers here, from what they've seen or witnessed, will go back very on edge. It is a cumulative effect, especially when you have a short time between deployments."

- LT. COL. REAGON P. CARR, on the Second Brigade of the Army's 10th Mountain Division, which holds the record for deployments since Sept. 11,
2001.

There are 477 days until the end of this regime on 1/20/2009
There are 400 days until election day -- 11/4/2008

And we are counting down.
Bill, NYC, in his 9:01 post, might want to ask himself if Bush would qualify as a PHONEY, too. He went AWOL rather than serve his obligated service time, even in a cushy stateside billet (and during a time of war, too, as I recall. What is your definition of 'treason', Bill?) Then, when a reward was offered to ANYONE who could recall serving with the person who later ended up being the p.Resident of the United States, no one came forward to claim it. Seems like somebody would remember. And, yes I did serve my country honorably for four years. More than you did, I bet, punk.
Pat, Boston, MA (Sent Monday, October 01, 2007 10:15 AM)

No, I'm not, and never have been.  The only time I ever went to Shea Stadium was when the Yankees were playing there in the 70's and Yankee Stadium was under construction.

It used to be, that the Mets and the Phillies would fight over last place, it was kind of wierd watching them fight over first place.

Willie Randolph must be ready to trade the whole lot of them.
Larry Charleston, SC (Sent Monday, October 01, 2007 9:56 AM)

Are you kidding???  We true liberals NEVER would even CONSIDER reading that SOB's website.  Why should we be subjected to that atrocity when we can get all the information second or third hand through kos, media matters, moveon, countdown, or a multitude of other sources?  Besides you must know we like to believe ANYTHING negative about our antagonists true or not...  Wait... anything negative about them must be true. Jeeesh...
True Liberal (Sent Monday, October 01, 2007 10:54 AM)

Replace Liberal with Conservative and your rants are spot on scottie.

Have you enlisted yet?  if not, why not?
Pat in Boston: No I'm not a Mets fan or a fan of the National League in particular. If you cut me I bleed Yankee blue. I'm happy they don't have to play Los Angeles off the bat. I must say I hope the yanks pitching holds up. It was their achilles heel for most of the season. Now that the playoffs are here I don't see them winning many 11-10 games.
It appears that someone is having fun with aliases again. True Liberal ? I think not. In think Carol and Pam have figured out who the perp is. I prefer to reserve judgement myself.
Carol, Long Valley NJ (Sent Monday, October 01, 2007 11:06 AM)

Carol,  I’m not sure what this reference to Scottie is, but I am a true Liberal so by definition I either have been or still am in the military, as have anyone even remotely connected to me (as long as they are liberal of course).
Bob, I agree that Bush is a phoney on his military record. Therefore , you must admit that John Kerry is also a phoney because he also lied about his military service. As did that idiot senator from Iowa , Harken, who lied about his military record. But, Jesse MacBeth neverwas in Iraq and never saw what the liberals put forth as the truth. So who realy are the phonies.
PS I did serve 2 tours in VN , thank you
