Countdown Thursday: S-Chip Wreck

Posted: Thursday, October 18, 2007 8:52 PM by Countdown
Filed Under:

S-Chip of Fools: Are "wins" really that vital to this White House? Are they so few and far between, that a President who threw away the greatest personal support ever afforded a Chief Executive, and threw away a re-election, is so marginalized that he would have a spokesperson characterize denying roughly four million children health care insurance as "we won this round on S-Chip"? Yes. George W. Bush is that bankrupt.

Eavesdroppings: The Senate Intelligence Committee is ready to roll over on immunizing the telecom giants for illegal spying that they and the President insist was legal. Senate Judiciary  Chairman Leahy has a different thought about that.

ODDBALL: A model literally slips through the crack in the floor, and pigs are recruited to the circus.

Out of '08Considering the ferocity with which the states are pushing up their presidential primaries, if you ran for the nomination and didn't make it to even the first of them, it didn't go well.  Tonight in the countdown to 2008, another Republican calling it quits. Kansas Senator Sam Brownback expected to end his race tomorrow.

Dead or Alive? The reaction to David Chase's mystifying series finale of "The Sopranos" is akin to the seven stages of grief. First shock, or disbelief. Then denial, bargaining, guilt, anger, depression. And finally, acceptance and hope. Now Mr. Chase's official interview on the series-ender is sure to start the process all over again.

WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD: Sean Hannity versus the Attorney General Designate Michael  Mukasey versus probably the dumbest sitting Congressman.

Iggy Stop: "It's gotten out of hand", she said. Ellen DeGeneres says she is shutting down the scandal that has gripped the nation - well, a very small percentage of the nation - for four days. It's just a coincidence, apparently, that her decision to do this happens on the same day that a tape pops up out of nowhere, of a publicist for Ms. DeGeneres, threatening the "Mutts and Moms" agency over the future of Iggy the Dog.

“…it’s like Alice that’s fallen down a rabbit hole.  I see the world in a different way.”  -- Dana Perino

Excuse me, Ms. Perino.  I’m the one who sees the world in a “different” way.  You know, humane, compassionate.  Or maybe you don’t know.

Please stay out of my backyard and go back to Mordor where you belong.  Sauron is waiting.
Hey, Red Queen.  What are you trying to pull?  We don’t want her in Mordor, either.  We’ve got our own mouth.  Maybe she should try Oz.
Nope.  She’s not welcome in Oz, and neither are you, Witch King.  We’ve already got Ann Coulter.  Get out the big balloon and send her back to … Washington.  She fits right in there.
Welcome to another day
Joe Torre for Mayor!!!

BTW, I really hope he told the Steinbrenner's to f*#k off. Yes, I know he's too classy for that, but I'm not and I would seriously enjoy it if he did not just turn them down but also gave them what for. They are not going to find anyone better & they should have thought of that & treated him better.

(And BTW, I'm still mad about the way they treated Bernie Williams).

I'll get you my pretty. Your little dog too

Can we ***P L E A S E*** stop posting garbage like this??
It has its own cosmology, its own miracles, its own beliefs in the supernatural, its own churches, its own high priests, its own saints, its own total worldview, and its own explanation of the existence of the universe. In other words, liberalism contains all the attributes of what is generally known as 'religion.'"  True Liberal (Sent Thursday, October 18, 2007 8:50 PM)

True – I’ll grant you that I have my own cosmology (or cosmetology, or something), my own worldview, and my own explanation of the universe.  But I doubt that I have the same cosmology, worldview or explanation of the universe as all other liberals.  And I’m not much into priests, saints, or churches.  So what does that make me?  Besides an anomaly, I mean?

Why is the relative patriotism of the two parties the only issue that is out of bounds for rational discussion?”
True Liberal (Sent Thursday, October 18, 2007 8:55 PM)

I hope we don’t have to go back to mentoring, True.  The answer is simple.  There's no rational way to discuss it.  How can you measure relative patriotism?  Joules and gigajoules just won't do it.
#1. Somebody ask Dubya if "Mutts and Moms" threats is how World War Three starts? #2. Somebody ask Dubya if James Gandolfino starts WW3. #3. In Cheney's version of the Book of Revelation, isn't Brownback's pulling out of the '08 race, the way WWIII starts? #4. Doesn't the sending of Leahy to Gitmo on charges trumped up by illegal evesdropping, start Mundo Guerra Tres? #5. OK. Either Dubya's potential flushing of 4 million kids lives down the drain, or Britter losing visitation rights with her kids MUST start, "THE NEW BIG ONE"! After it starts, the 22nd Amendment is declared Void, and Dubya sends everybody to Gitmo.
How did I know that the subject of Joe's unceremonial exit from the Yankees organization would make COUNTDOWN tonight?! Steinbrenner's a boil on the butt of humanity.

Speaking of boils, which part of "SCHIP is for the middle-class; Medicaid is for the poor." don't people get? How stupid are people anyway?! Wait, don't answer that.

"...marble-cake..." and "...Neopolitan ice cream bars..." [insert Homer Simpson gurgle here]

I also liked Keith's "dead-beat daddy party" comment!

Sorry, but that's about it; what a craptacular day.
Oddball: That's nuthin. In America, sick kids are pushed through the cracks, and pigs are elected President. Worst Person: It's impossible to tell which dumb congressman is the dumbest, since not one of the 435, would agree to divulge the contents of their...nevermind.
I think Dana meant it's like she's fallen down a rat hole...which would make it Dubyaworld. No wonder she sees things different. Check her for the Prisoner of War/Eye Blink Code. I bet she's calling out for a Deep Dish Pizza with Ritalin.
Why do liberals hate poor children ? All they want is coverage for the middle class, so they must hate the poor. Liberals can't get away with Bush hates the children , because they are the ones refusing to work on covering all of the poor. There are over 500,000 not covered that would qualify that the liberals refuse to help. Oh well.
"So you are OK with the political grandstanding, exploitation of  a 12 year for political purposes, by the democrats.  It is OK for Nancy Pelosi to say that Bush hates kids"
Kevin of NJ

I never said that. I said it's not the same thing as a senator paid with taxpayer dollars telling lies about a twelve-year old kid, releasing a twelve-year old kids home address, and then lying about your staffs involvement in it.

You shouldn't attack kids. You shouldn't tell lies about kids. Once again, it's just sad you loyal bushies can't see that. You can spin till your hearts content, but people don't like seeing kids attacked, and people remember it.I think a lot of republicans are going to look back later and really regret this "win". The fact forty-something republicans didn't want to not support it ought to tell you something too.
#5 S-Chip--In California, we had a similar program (at least, I believe it was) called the California Crippled Children's Service.  My infant daughter needed corrective surgery on her foot, and even though I had a well-paying job and good insurance, what the insurance did NOT pay would have bankrupted me.  Insurance that would help people in my income bracket can be a life saver, and there's no good reason why the Republicans should be tying this up.
#4 Eavesdropping--Why bother going after the telecom companies for their crimes?  When the economy goes tits up, the smaller ones will merge with the bigger ones, or go out of business. There won't be any money for people to collect damages.
#3 Out of '08--I don't believe any of the polls. I think they are being manipulated so we will all believe that the candidates that most people think suck are out in front.  Hillary, Rudy and Mitt are not near as popular as those polls say.  I'm going to re-register as a Republican and vote for Ron Paul in the primaries.  His popularity is real, and Countdown doesn't give him enough air time.
#1 Iggy Stop--What, no Britney?  Just kidding!  I think I'd rather hear about her or Paris than Ellen and her precious little dog.

Get all your posting done now, folks!  Anything you post on tomorrow's thread won't show up until Monday!

#5..Rep. Pete Stark(D)CA.."you don't have money to fund a (f'g) war or children, but you're gonna spend it to blow up innocent people if we can get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the President's amusement". A bit harsh..yes, but you can't blame Pete for being stark raving mad at this administration.

Dana Perino is getting on my nerves.

#4..no telecom companies should not get immunity. I'm ready to dump Verizon. I resent anyone giving out information without our knowledge. No court order or warrant is unacceptable. This nonsense has to stop.

#2..not more suspense. Enough with the cliff hangers. Is this guy testing the waters for a sequel?

WPitW..Mukasey might consider using waterboarding if it doesn't violate the Constitution definition of torture..simulating drowing..unsure if it is torture! An idiot guy friend of mine once threw me in the ocean, I can't swim, I almost drowned. A friend pulled me out..hell yes it's torture. He's going to be another Bush "yes man"..bet on it.

#1..bottom line, Iggy has a new home..end of story.

DUMP THE TOBACCO TAX BEFORE RELOADING SCHIP!
That idea, a sixty-one cent per pack tax increase, was straight out of a Republican think tank...a tax that had nothing to do with income.  Only "sin" was to be taxed.  Give 'em that old time, holier-than-thou religion.

The Democrats need to change that aspect of SCHIP and fund it with an income tax instead.  Otherwise, some of the people paying for SCHIP will be people who earn less than those being helped by SCHIP.  Yup, that's the Repunk way, all right...mean, nasty, and unfair.  Just can't understand how any self-respecting Democrat could have supported that funding plan.

I also can't understand how the liberals in media, including Keith Olbermann, failed to expose this incredibly regressive tax scheme.  Instead there was utter silence on the subject...as if people who smoke cigarettes were non-persons, deserving of every punishment, including grossly unfair taxation.  With liberals like them, who needs conservatives?

If it passes with the cigarette tax, I'll be paying more for SCHIP than our beloved, way above my pay grade host...and that's way not right.
But if it does, I hope all my fellow liberals do the right thing and take up smoking...after all, it would be for the children.
Please do make a special comment on GOP vile anti-SChip tactics and do not spare the ghoul! Witness the ghoulish looks on the faces of McConnell and Kyl!
Stark was closer to the truth than most dare to go, and one word cannot compare in repugnance to the numbers of tortured, displaced, dead and defiled for which bush and cheney are responsible! Shame on Alter.
As governor of Texas, Bush obviously relished executing prisoners and he has enjoyed the taste of it since then!
Look up the State of the Union speech where he smirkingly bragged that some of America's enemies wouldn't be heard from again! Go get 'em Keith!
Surely chidren should count for more than their ability to grow up to carry a gun in order to get health care and artificial limbs!
I think Craig Crawford said on tonight's show, "Hillary Clinton doesn't seem to make any mistakes..."

What? How about her membership in the Council on Foreign Relations, a pro NAU, pro one-world government think tank? How about you spend five minutes researching the special interest groups that have her in their pocket?

My god, do your job! Try doing a little investigating, then some good reporting. That is your duty! With the time that you completely waste on digging for Ellen Degeneres dog information, or Britney updates, you could help create an informed public!

It really makes me sick how the press accomplishes nothing! Sometimes, you contribute nothing of value!
How can you measure relative patriotism?  Joules and gigajoules just won't do it.

Why not increase the tax on beer, wine, spirits and gambling in addition to cigarettes? Also, I'm almost sure that many government employees get free(to them)health insurance. Couldn't they pay a nominal sum for insurance?
Keith sees Mr. Stark's comments as "refreshing", wow, thats pretty sad even for Keith.

I agree, a kid should never be attacked, and I have said that.  But to use a kid as a political pawn is just as revolting.  If you like where politics has gone with both sides, great, but I for one am disgusted with the whole process.  You should be too.  Think independently, don't go lockstep with one party or another.
Larry Charleston, SC (Sent Thursday, October 18, 2007 10:15 PM)

Maybe someday you'll surprise me, but that day is far in to the future.

MEDICAID IS FOR POOR CHILDREN.  ALL POOR CHILDREN ARE ALREADY COVERED UNDER MEDICAID!!!   sChip is for lower middle class working families.  Sheesh.  Will you please read something not authored by a neoconnutjob.
Can we get Rep. Peter Stark into the Speaker's chair?   Nancy -- looking like a petulant soccer mom surrounded by her boys, sounding petulant and put-upon -- is clearly not the leader the times call for.

Pete Stark ... a politician not afraid to display moral outrage. Is that legal?  When's he going to be on the show?

McConnell: Another lying republican chest-deep in a smear.  Why am I not surprised? Any bets Karl Rove is on speed-dial on his office phone? Shall I hold my breath awaiting a congressional inquiry?

Missed Story of the Day: Richard Roberts, of Oral Roberts University, taking a "leave of absence" while they sort out why his wife, Lindsey, apparently "spent the night in the ORU guest house with an underage male on nine separate occasions." Her many late-night text messages to young men, sitings around town with boys in her sports car, and some reportedly significant financial irregularities add to the juice factor.  Forget Ellen's dog-- there's a cougar on the loose...!

You're sounding a bit hostile this morning, True.  And to think I reminded Steve (next thread) to be sure you were invited to the party at Countdown's new headquarters.  Don't make me regret that.  I'd have to ask my date Ben Kenobi bend your mind or something.  (Oops, that would be another question.)

I have to agree with you here.  Hillary does nothing wrong.  Why don't we just put the Clinton Campaign Headquarters sign up.  Other candidates are forgotten in this election.  What a sad state of affairs.
Keith sees Mr. Stark's comments as "refreshing", wow, thats pretty sad even for Keith.

Did not watch, but did he actually say that.  OK newsholers, please defend that statement, and please defend the statement that Stark made on the House floor.
Regarding the supermodel thru the floor item, now we know the other reason models are required to maintain that no more than 93 pound, look like a concentration camp survivor, body. It's because of the load limitations of the catwalk.
All poor children are aready covered ?? That's not what the liberal talking heads are saying. But let's just say you are correct. Isn't it a wonderful thing that this President has covered all of the poor and wants to expand SCHIP by $6 billion dollars to cover those just outside the net of Medicaid ? Now Carol, explain why you would want people who have insurance coverage in the private sector to switch to a bloated government program ? And don't say because that's what liberals do , liberals do alot of idiotic things
Is it just me or does it seem that the President and those that voted with him on the S-Chip bill are voting against Congress...just to vote against Congress because Democrats have the majority and the bill was introduced by Democrats?  It seems there is a battle of wills going on in Washington and the American people are left out in the cold; on the S-Chip, which over 75% of Americans support; over bringing home the troops from Iraq and ending the war; which over 70% of Americans support...  Are the American people and what they REALLY want even figured in these Congressmen's (and women's) or the President's votes and vetos?  We have to make sure it is blasted all over the media the names of those who voted against the S-Chip and against bringing the troops home; both Democrat and Republicans, and make them pay at the voting booth in 2008.
Finally got twisted Krista to admit that SCHIP is for the middle class. Now we can move forward. See , Bush doesn't hate poor children , even though there are over 500,000 poor children still not covered. But let's move on up to the middle class and get socialized medicine started.

As a federal employee, I pay about $600 per month in premiums for HMO family coverage.  That's what I pay, not what my employer kicks in.  More than nominal, in my opinion.
Larry Charleston, SC (Sent Thursday, October 18, 2007 10:15 PM)

Didn't you already post this on a previous thread?  I guess no new thoughts today.
Laura in Los Angeles (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 12:27 AM)

I'm right there with you regarding Verizon.  I called their customer service to ask a general question of the type of documentation that has been handed over to the govt without a subpoena and was told they could not release that information.  I then told the lady that I would probably be dropping them as my carrier when my contract is up at the end of the year.  She then got real snooty with me and could basically care less.  She finally hung up on me when I started asking more questions their proposed immunity etc.

Neither party should partake in this type of bs.  Never said it was OK if a R does it.  NEVER NEVER
Kevin of NJ (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 9:33 AM)

Stark said what everyone one else is thinking but couldn't say out loud.  Don't you know that the smug Republicans declared a "victory" over lower middle class childen.  A "Victory" was the phrase that Dana used!  How can you defend that?  Over 80% of the country disagrees with '43' and his ilk!  Next the Republicans will want billions more for that rat hole that is the civil war in Iraq!  I can't 'defend' it -- I agree with it, tell me where Stark was wrong!  He wasn't PC, but he wasn't wrong.
"Did not watch, but did he actually say that.  OK newsholers, please defend that statement, and please defend the statement that Stark made on the House floor."

Keith specifically said he thought the gorier aspects were over the top in Stark's original statement, but that it sure is refreshing to see a outraged Democratic politician with a spine reflect the feelings of most Americans. And his later "I have no respect or use for chicken hawks in Congress who vote to deny children health care." response to crybaby John Boehner, (R-Ohio)"outrage" was pretty much dead solid perfect.

The fact Stark is making Boehner, the Fixed News gang, and oxycotin spokesperson Rush Limbaugh all froth at the mouth this morning pretty much shows me Stark is on the side of good.
Kevin of NJ (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 9:33 AM)

Stark should not have said what he did.  As I understand it, the bashing of others is not allowed on the house floor so he should have followed those standards.  But on the other hand, Although a litle graphic, one can hardly blame him for saying what the majority of Americans feel.  He should have selected a different venue to address his frustation with this administration.  If I lived in his district I would probably vote for him.  Unlike other dems, he at least has the balls to take on the administration.
Larry Charleston, SC (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 10:02 AM)

Stop the name calling of Krista.  If you want to have a rational discussion of the issues like adults we can have them.  But if you want to persist with your childish games you'll never be taken seriously.  Never mind....I forgot who i was talking to....continue to copy and paste.  Did you learn that at the Citadel?

I think I learned this in second grade math.  According to your logic, if A + B = C, then:

a.) Liberal + speaking = lie

b.) Bed Wetting + Republican = BWR

Got it.
Larry Charleston, SC (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 9:53 AM)

Sorry larry...S-CHIP was first inacted in the late 90's when there was another president.  Once again, you're gonna have a little trouble making people believe SCHIP is brand new and that Bush was lying in bed one night making love to Laura thinking I must do something for poor people to keep from not lasting long enough and laura getting mad at him...again.  I usually think of sports.  Sorry got off track a little.
Carol, you make you  big mistake about Larry or any republican, they care more for their party then their fellow americans. People like Larry and True think by being a republican they are patriots and are above criticism. They think they can buy courage and patriotism by joining a political party. They will never lift a finger to defend this country but they are more patriotic then those of us that have served. Hey True and Larry, COURAGE AND PATRIOTISN CAN NOT BE BOUGHT, IT HAS TO BE EARNED. So what the hell have you 2 losers done to make America a better place besides hating your fellow americans. Remember Carol these haters will say anything to justify their arguements, if it means lying and chastising 12 year olds to justify their party they will. Kevin it is the republican party attacking the 12 year old. What is wrong with using a 12 year old to show how a program works. Is it any different then using soldiers in ads to justify a war? Soldiers are not suppose to be political but republicans use them all the time in advertisements and at republican functions.
Dear Keith Olbermann:

As I’m sure you can see, you are highly thought of by your audience. Certainly from reading everyone’s posts on a daily basis here, it is quite obvious that you are well respected. For me in particular, I love reading comments from viewers who don’t come here regularly. They just come to “drop a note” to you to express their appreciation of your obvious courage and intelligence in a world where neither is at all evident these days, especially on our air waves.

But having said that, I have also noticed for a long time now that there’s something about your delivery when talking about baseball. For me, it’s like listening to the ultimate baseball fan in this country.  That’s what I see and hear every single time you tell a story about the old days.  The respect you show to the game is so endearing to me. There are millions upon millions of people in this country who love baseball, who love and cherish their memories of going to the park with their fathers as children. In a way you speak to that period of our lives every time you tell a story.  By constantly bringing back the stories of old, you are telling us in a way to keep it going for our children and grandchildren. To me anyway, this is one of the greatest gifts you give your viewers and I just wanted you to know that.
