Countdown Thursday: S-Chip Wreck

Posted: Thursday, October 18, 2007 8:52 PM by Countdown
Filed Under:

S-Chip of Fools: Are "wins" really that vital to this White House? Are they so few and far between, that a President who threw away the greatest personal support ever afforded a Chief Executive, and threw away a re-election, is so marginalized that he would have a spokesperson characterize denying roughly four million children health care insurance as "we won this round on S-Chip"? Yes. George W. Bush is that bankrupt.

Eavesdroppings: The Senate Intelligence Committee is ready to roll over on immunizing the telecom giants for illegal spying that they and the President insist was legal. Senate Judiciary  Chairman Leahy has a different thought about that.

ODDBALL: A model literally slips through the crack in the floor, and pigs are recruited to the circus.

Out of '08Considering the ferocity with which the states are pushing up their presidential primaries, if you ran for the nomination and didn't make it to even the first of them, it didn't go well.  Tonight in the countdown to 2008, another Republican calling it quits. Kansas Senator Sam Brownback expected to end his race tomorrow.

Dead or Alive? The reaction to David Chase's mystifying series finale of "The Sopranos" is akin to the seven stages of grief. First shock, or disbelief. Then denial, bargaining, guilt, anger, depression. And finally, acceptance and hope. Now Mr. Chase's official interview on the series-ender is sure to start the process all over again.

WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD: Sean Hannity versus the Attorney General Designate Michael  Mukasey versus probably the dumbest sitting Congressman.

Iggy Stop: "It's gotten out of hand", she said. Ellen DeGeneres says she is shutting down the scandal that has gripped the nation - well, a very small percentage of the nation - for four days. It's just a coincidence, apparently, that her decision to do this happens on the same day that a tape pops up out of nowhere, of a publicist for Ms. DeGeneres, threatening the "Mutts and Moms" agency over the future of Iggy the Dog.

Mike, AL (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 11:26 AM)  It's OK, Mike; he knows he's not taken seriously, and it drives him batty. I wear the "Twisted Krista" nickname as a badge of honor. Besides, he makes me laugh. You just prove that chivalry is not dead, so thanks again!

Rana, Purchase, NY (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 11:27 AM)  You give me hope in "higher" education! ;)
"MK, as long as he is 13 points HIGHER than your congress , he's ok. How convenient for you to leave out the 11% approval rating for Pelosi and Reid. Liberals will never get it." Larry Charleston, SC

I know you are a mouth-breathing idiot, but surely even a dolt like you has to realize that half of Congress is made up of Republicans.
I personally believe that Stark's comment was "refreshing". What do you expect? After 7 years of being jerked around and backed into a corner, I am glad that one of the dems eventually exploded. They actually do have a pulse! I was also glad Keith did not use him for Worst Person...Instead he uses a congressman who knew the truth of S-CHIP, but plays to the fearmongering we have dealt with for far to long. I watched about 30 mins of the debate on C-SPAN, and every republicOn, I saw, said the bill would take money from poor children. That is what medicaid is for! If we had universal healthcare then we would not be dealing with this crap and a 12 year-old would not be smeared.

"It is not because things are difficult
that we do not dare,
it is because we do not dare
that things are difficult."    - Seneca
And don't say because that's what liberals do , liberals do alot of idiotic things
Larry Charleston, SC (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 9:53 AM)

I know man, you can't believe what those liberal prison guards do.  And those liberal judges are worse.  Good thing Bush's looking out for you and me, you know man, the opressed ones.
Here's something to think about..

A recent study found the average American walks aboaut 900 miles per year.

Another study found Americans drink, on average, 22 gallons of beer a year.

That means, on average, Americans get about 41 miles to the gallon.

Kind Of Makes You Proud To Be American!
Carol, Long Valley NJ (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 11:09 AM)

What he did was against the code of conduct.  So you agree with him that they at war in Iraq for Bushes amusement?  Wow, that is a pretty strong statement to make.
Want more proof of how idiotic Bush's veto of S-CHIP was? Look at which state has the highest percentage of uninsured kids:

STATE AND % KIDS UNINSURED

(1) Texas — 14%
(2) Arizona — 11.6%
(2) New Mexico — 11.6%
(4) Mississippi — 10.8%
(5) Florida — 10.7%

That might make things a mite awkward in Crawford.

Eric, Kingsport, TN (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 8:08 AM)

Leave Keith alone.
Craig Crawford thought that Rep. Stark went over the line when he said that kids were going to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the President's amusement.  Bush is a human being, Crawford said, so he doesn't take pleasure in people dying.

My response to this is, "Prove it."  Direct me to an instance where Bush has shown compassion or empathy for another person.  Would it be the record number of executions he presided over in Texas?  His mocking of Karla Fay Tucker's plea for leniency?  His incompetence and lack of personal attention to the rescue of the citizens of New Orleans?  The fact that he squandered a budgetary surplus he inherited which could have been used to dig wells for clean water, saving tens of thousands of lives in Africa, or to vaccinate children the world over?  That he lied us into an unnecessary war?  Show me that there's some reason for these deadly, destructive policies that aren't "his own amusement."

To be honest, I don't think it's amusement.  I just don't think he cares.  They're just collateral damage.

Why not increase the tax on beer, wine, spirits and gambling in addition to cigarettes? Also, I'm almost sure that many government employees get free(to them)health insurance. Couldn't they pay a nominal sum for insurance?
Nanalinda, San Antonio, TX (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 3:01 AM)

Funding SCHIP with an increased tax on cigarettes was a compromise with the Republicans who insisted that general revenues not be used.  "Sin Taxes" are regressive since they are not based on income, thereby disproportionally affecting those with lower incomes.

When insurance rates started going up, government employees found themselves in the same situation as employees of private companies:  footing the difference in costs, having coverage reduced, being forced into HMOs for cost savings, as well as having much larger up front costs and co-pays.

We also saw future raises diminished as insurance costs soared and raises were traded to offset them as well as agreeing to pay larger monthly premiums.  We went, like private employees, from 100% funded insurance to helping to pay for our plans, having less coverage, having less choice, and paying more in deductables and co-payments.

Nobody's getting "free" insurance anymore.
Healthcare for children, what would OJ do?
Forget "Which of these stories will you be talking about tomorrow?" How about "Which of these stories was I talking about less than a half hour before sitting down to watch Countdown?" S-CHIP and Rep. Stark's comments, and what I said was not radically different from KO's comment that there was  "something refreshing" about his remarks even though "obviously he went to extremes."

Stark's line about "the President's amusement" is a little difficult to dismiss as completely baseless given that:

(a) the troop surge was something he came up with seemingly on his own after completely rejecting the advice of the Iraq Study Group -- a decision that certainly seemed more like a whim than a carefully considered plan based on discussions with any military experts

(b) the President recently referred to the possibility of World War III with a giggle like that of a schoolboy who had just passed gas.

It's difficult not to get the impression that he's doing and saying things simply for his own amusement, even if that isn't really the case.

The tenor of the debate from either side of the House floor was hardly admirable. If Stark is going to be compelled to apologize for his remarks, then there are quite a few others who need to get in line behind him.
Krista in Indy and Laura in L.A.-
Thanks for comments on Clarence Thomas.  I did watch his entire interview and thought I must have missed something.  Maybe it was a teaser-so you'd buy his book.  If I were one of the other eight I'd insist on continued use of metal detectors.  Talk about a migruntled government employee.
Scott Copeland, Naples Fl (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 12:50 PM)

Nice job.  But I'm sure they'll blame it all on the illegals crossing the border.  Then they'll make some Mexican breeding joke...yada yada yada.
Hey bobf, sorry to disappoint you  - but I am a retired colonel in the USAF and served two tours in VN. And I can say , liberals are just like the terrorists if you want me to say so. They both use innocent children as human shields because they are unable to fight for themselves. Now sir, state your qualifications on being a patriot.

Words of wisdom while doing your time:  Don't drop the soap.
Scott/Copeland, were you outraged during THIS republican news conference regarding sexual predators, when the group of kids were made to stay for an "adult conversation" just so the republican could have the kids as window dressing?
http://www.firedoglake.com/2006/10/03/nrsc-uses-small-children-as-human-shields/

The DIFFERENCE SCOTT! Is that this places a human face, and displays a perfect example of the kind of AMERICAN family that S-CHIP helps out...what's the story with Tom Reynolds, head of the NRCC using many children during an inappropriate-for-kids news conference?

Geez...talk about thinking for yourself.
Stop the name calling of Krista.  If you want to have a rational discussion of the issues like adults we can have them.  But if you want to persist with your childish games you'll never be taken seriously.  Never mind....I forgot who i was talking to....continue to copy and paste.  Did you learn that at the Citadel?
Mike, AL (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 11:26 AM)

That should go for others on this forum (Sue, Jen, Laura, etc).  Stop with the name calling......
Mike in AL, never said SCHIP was a product of"W". WHAT I DID SAY WAS THAT HE WANTS TO EXPAND IT BY $6 BILLION TO INSURE EVEN MORE CHILDREN. Now, you obviously are against anything this president stands for, but do me a favor. Check the Alabama rolls and tell me how many poverty children are not enrolled in SCHIP and why you want to expand the program to cover the middle class , most whom have insurance but will switch when given the option of "FREE", and forget about those poor not covered by anything. Or is that job to difficult for an Auburn fan
Kevin of NJ (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 12:40 PM)

I agree with what

greennotGreen Nashville, TN (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 1:02 PM)

posted.  It would have been tough to have said it any better.  I have intensely disliked '43' since 1999 and cheney just scares me to death.  You are welcome to claim both of them for your own.  I can't wait until they step down

There are 459 days until the end of this regime on 1/20/2009
There are 444 days until the end of this Congress on 1/5/2009 ???
There are 382 days until election day -- 11/4/2008

Evaluate all the candidates and think wisely before you vote.
And we are counting down.
HAHA! Rana...you're great...luv ya.

Bedwetting as applied to republicans is on TARGET.  Which party cried and wet their pants and allowed 19 individuals to bring our Superpower to its knees?  They used 9/11 as an excuse for political gain...not to protect the country.  They'd rather run around like chicken little saying the sky is falling.  Terrorists ARE NOT around every corner...but they will be unless we address things such as...UNJUST WAR!

Yep Scott , and this dolt reports that the Republican half got the rating up to 11%. Without them , we're talking negatives for Pelosi and Reid's Congress . Now who's the idiot !
Hey Krista, you're not driving me batty. Life is good. Making lots of money, paying lower taxes, and relieved that getting a blow job is not cheating. And on top of that , get to read how bad it must be to be a liberal. Like I said, LIFE IS GOOD.
OJ or O J, one talks bs, the other doesn't talk. Will the real one step forward.
Larry Charleston, what are you talking about "using children as human shields"? Last time I looked every military in every part of the world is doing it, even the US. Where do you think all this AF Bases and other military installation are. In the middle of populated areas and not to speak of all the civilians housed on Bases and so forth.
Yep..they're suffering from PMS alright..
Kevin of NJ..you can't have it both ways. You guys name call when there's something in it for you, but when we call you on it, you whimper and call foul! You are welcome to change the channel anytime dear.
Josh, Fairlawn, OH (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 2:20 PM)

They are also the ones crying for apologies every time the big bad liberals hurt their feelings.

I thought there was an age threshold for holding office, but that probably relates to chronological rather than mental age.
Larry 2:27PM..Hey Larry two things people lie about in life..how much money they make and how much sex they're getting.
Laura, that's PMSNBC , they're suffering big time. And without Media Matters they would have nothing to talk about. SOOOOO, good luck on your move Keith, I hope the ratings pick up so we don't lose you.
That means, on average, Americans get about 41 miles to the gallon.

Kind Of Makes You Proud To Be American!
Laura in Los Angeles (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 12:33 PM)

So we are pretty fuel efficient.  That is pretty funny and timing is perfect, as it is friday
Laura in Los Angeles (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 2:39 PM)

You can't have both ways either. Or do want to stifle our free speech.  I state my opinions on an open forum, and because I don't agree with your positions, does not mean that I am a, what do you guys call it, neoconnutjob idiot/ dimwit.  It is good to listen to both sides of an argument, understand different points of view.  So sweetheart, listen to both sides, it will make you a more informed person.
Mike, AL..I responded to your information about phone call to Verizon, but it hasn't been posted yet..hope it is. If not, I'll post again later.
Kevin..you're welcome to your opinion anytime, as we all are. Uninformed, informed is a matter of opinion.
Adios.
"Yep Scott , and this dolt reports that the Republican half got the rating up to 11%. Without them , we're talking negatives for Pelosi and Reid's Congress . Now who's the idiot !"
Larry Charleston, SC

Uhhh, that would be you. Only a dolt would consider a 24% approval rating as a a 'mandate". Only a bigger dolt would look on congress's 11% approval rating as proof people just love the Republicans, and hate the Dems.

And I'll be reminding you about that in '08, when your heroes are going to get a bigger shellacing than they got in '06. And because you are a dolt, you'll blame it liberals instead of the real reason, you loony bushies refuse to evolve along with the majority of folks. Well, that, and your love of dishonesty and general incompetence.
Josh, Fairlawn, OH (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 2:20 PM)

Thanks and I am pleased you got my objective insight into the mind of the ultra conservative republican. I must be honest though, I really owe everything I learned, (even before Kindergarten) to my mom, thank her.

Thanks mom and get better.
At least I will get better healthcare in prison than the children living in this country.  Good thing the liberal's do not control this. Bush does. Oh boy, I forgot, the judges and prison guards are all liberal democrats though.
Kevin of NJ (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 3:08 PM)

I do listen to both sides, I just find the extreme right wing (the neoconnutjobs) hard to believe or understand.  Part of me hopes that I never do understand them, I prefer to keep my humanity.

Enjoy your weekend, hopefully the weather is nice for leaf peeping.  I noticed that the colors were starting to get pretty vibrant this morning.
...like that of a schoolboy who had just passed gas.  Hey BN, whenever I see that vacuous grinning smirk, I don't care what's coming out of his mouth but it looks like what's running through his head is, "Uh-oh, that was kinda lumpy for a fart, I guess Laura will find the real turd blossom when she's sorting' the laundry."  22 gallons of beer on average?!?!  I think we've got some slackers out there!  Or I'm way above average.
Larry Charleston, SC (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 2:18 PM)

Larry - according to the GAO, the $5B expansion (not $6B) that the president is offering for SCHIP will not cover the children that are currently covered by the program. So at the end of the 5 year term of that expansion, there will be fewer children covered by SCHIP.  If he really cared about the children, he'd at least offer enough $$ to cover the children already enrolled in the program.

One can argue that $35B is too much (I wouldn't, but reasonable people can disagree), but $5B is too little.  If we aren't going to cover more children - let's at least not reduce the number covered.
"I state my opinions on an open forum, and because I don't agree with your positions, does not mean that I am a, what do you guys call it, neoconnutjob idiot/ dimwit.  It is good to listen to both sides of an argument, understand different points of view.  So sweetheart, listen to both sides, it will make you a more informed person." Kevin

Awwww, poor lil' loyal bushie. Alls hims wanted to do was go on a board for Keith Olbermann's show, and tells everybody how much he hates Keith, how much his show sucks, and how stupid the opinions of all his fans are.

And those mean heathen libbies call him names and make fun of his positions, when all he wants to do is enlightnen everybody.

Don't bother, idiot. If I was interested in your opinion, I'd go straight to the source and listen to Faux News, Coulter, Oreilly, Hannity, and all the rest of the idiots that say it better than your recycled interpretations.

You guys come here either because you like to argue, or you can't afford $24.99 to join Billo's site, or because you think it's fun knocking liberals. Hey, it's a free country, and a free board, so knock yourself out. But don't be a whiny lil' girlyman and plead, "why can't we all just discuss things nice" when your positions are abhorrant to most people here.

To use a baseball analogy, if you're a Yankee's fan and want to go to a Red Sox game, great. But if you insist on going to a Sox game, and telling everyone how much the Yankee's and their fans suck and are stupid, don't expect to be treated nice. And don't be a whiny wuss when you're called on it.

Yo Larry, I was part of the real service: the enlisted ranks of thre US marine corps.I made sergeant in 3 years and traveled the world from Norway to Okinawa for my country. You freakin zoomies can fight your war 5000 feet in the air tough guy. I was trained for hand to hand combat just like all marines are. I actually care for my fellow marines and want to try to get them out of harms way. You on the other hand do not give a rats ass about the people going to war. It is all political and for the republican party. Military people are political tools to people like Larry. They are not human or have feelings.  In Larry's world  everything is about the republican party. Do you even have any compassion for your fellow service person going to war?  All military people are expandable in Larry's world because the party is more important than people: Right Larry. Remember Larry is a rare but consistent republican. He actually served but still cares more for the party than his fellow service people or fellow americans. Larry, I am real proud how you have attacked this 12 year old. Hey numnuts I am over 40, I beleive in S chip, come after me you coward and leave the 12 year old. Or are you hiding behind the 12 year old because you have no other arguement than attack the messenger/12 year old. I would have expected more dignity from an officer from the Air Force, but being republican is more inportant than dignity or honor. You sir have no honor when you attack a 12 year old. I will be waiting here for you. Come on back with the best smear and fear you got. Just be perpared, after being a republican for 26 years I relish the idea of smearing and fearing with you. As we say in the corps: BRING IT ON , LEAVE THE 12 YEAR OLD OF THIS. Semper fi to all my fellow marines out there.
My name is O J
and  I am here to stay
"Laura, that's PMSNBC , they're suffering big time. And without Media Matters they would have nothing to talk about. SOOOOO, good luck on your move Keith, I hope the ratings pick up so we don't lose you."
Larry Charleston, SC

Yeah, Larry, they're moving Keith to new digs at NBC's famous Rockefeller Center because his ratings are so bad.

You wish.

You bushies can keep saying Keith is in his "last throes" till the cows come home, and it doesn't change the fact Countdowns ratings have steadily rose while Faux News steadily decline.
"Hey bobf, sorry to disappoint you  - but I am a retired colonel in the USAF and served two tours in VN."

Yeah? At which Base Exchange? First of all, almost everything you say is a lie so I'm extremely dubious you ever set foot in Vietnam. Second of all, if you were there, you were obviously too thick to learn anything about the dangers of occupying a country that doesn't want to be occupied.

And before the PC police jump all over me, read some of the things patriot Larry wrote about John Murtha in other threads on this board. At best this dolt might have been in charge of a laundry mat, if he even went.
"So sweetheart, listen to both sides, it will make you a more informed person." Kevin of NJ

Unless of course, one side is based on lies,greed,non-accountability, selfishness, bigotry, and dogma.

And newsflash idiot, most women find being called "sweetheart" by some dolt they don't know condescending. Maybe that's why the mean ol' libbies call you names?

'Course, it's no big surprise you loyal bushies know nothing about real women.
Scott Copeland, Naples Fl (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 12:50 PM)

In all probability, Bush likes it that way.  Why do you think he lives in Texas when he's really from Connecticut?  Keeping the riff raff down keeps the riff raff from getting delusions of grandeur.  Bush wants to be the only one with delusions of grandeur.  Right now he's sharing with Dick Cheney and Congress, but he's pulling away.
To be honest, I don't think it's amusement.  I just don't think he cares.  They're just collateral damage.

greennotGreen Nashville, TN (Sent Friday, October 19, 2007 1:02 PM)

My sentiments exactly.  Excellent post.  The best I’ve seen on this topic.  Someone needs to call him what he is.  People are dying out there because everyone is afraid to tell him.  Just like the emperor without any clothes.

Lucky, 10:36am. Thank you for your response. I wasn't sure that ALL Federal employees had free insurance. I thought that insurance was free for the employee, but that insurance for his/her family was paid by the employee. When I wrote that piece I was very careful not to state as fact something I didn't know for sure.
Many, many years ago my insurance was free, but I had to pay a premium for my children.
