Countdown Wednesday: Socal is Burning

Posted: Wednesday, October 24, 2007 8:59 PM by Countdown
Filed Under:

In The Line of FireIt is an awful calculus. The words of one resident of San Diego: "If your house did not burn down, it just means someone else's... did."  Our fifth story on the Countdown: The Southern California wildfires... raging for a fourth straight night... the destruction far from its end. State authorities and the F-B-I investigating arson as the cause of at least one of the fires. Calls for an investigation, no doubt imminent, with the re-discovery of two reports which warned last Spring the Bush administration was not adequately prepared to battle the inferno... or. in the carefully-crafted lingo of the White House... even to support those who would be battling the flames. We begin with the latest details on the conflagration.

The Terror CardThe President actually asks which terrorist attack we think he shouldn't have stopped. And you wonder why we call his party the Terror-Publicans? Fox turns a four-year old rumor into evidence Al-Qaeda might have started the California wildfires...

ODDBALL: Shooting a moon, and horse that's a poodle.

Rudy Switch HitsIf you're running for President of the United States, it can't be a good sign when your hometown newspaper calls you a traitor. But former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is being called that and more... now that he says he'll root for the New York Yankees' arch-enemies -- the Boston Red Sox -- when they go against the Colorado Rockies as the World Series starts tonight. And although there is baseball tradition to back him up... as a politician, he may yet want to rescind his announcement.  Just as former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney might want to take back a different kind of embarrassing remark. Romney twice saying "Barack Obama" when he apparently meant to say Osama bin Laden.

Juiced:  For O-J Simpson the athlete and performer it was always about increasing his statistics... More yards gained... More commercials made. Now -- in our number two story on the Countdown, Keeping Tabs -- he's still breaking his own records. As of tonight he's up to eleven separate felony counts in Las Vegas.

WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD: Michelle Malkin, Glenn Beck, and Rick Santorum vie for tonight's top honor.

The Day in PicturesSo many people evacuated that the number is actually unknown. Could be a million... could be half that. A billion dollars worth of damage in one county alone..And 18 fires still burning - one of them expected to burn until November we end the Countdown where we began, with the devastation in Southern California. Fires that raged uncontrollably until the Santa Ana winds started to die down a little bit today.

#4- Does Bush actually think the majority of the country is going to take him at his word? Do I think there is some truth in his statement about terrorist plots being stopped, yes? But suggesting that anyone would want a terrorist attack to succeed just shows you how deeply he's insulated from main stream America. " You're either for us or against us"
I thought it was the purple ties that were making Keiths eyes look bluer.  I also think there might be a new lighting person doing an excellent job.  I have mixed feelings on the Clive, George, Ewan thing while the show would be lovely to look at I'm not sure I would actually hear anything said.  Sometimes when presented with that much masculinity my mind wanders.  Would make a perfect #1 story though since I change the channel as soon as I see britney etal.
Twisted Krista , why should California get reimbursement from the feds ? Please explain.
Malkin has learned from Limbaugh and Coulter. Once in the public eye if you want to make a bundle of money say things and write things that are outrageous and controversial. You'll laugh all the way to the bank. Problem is you will also be trading in your soul, that is if you had one in the first place. Malkin knows where the dollars come from. Certainly not from reasonable discourse. She could care less what some on the right might think of her or how they may profile her. She is getting the exposure she wants and will follow the road of outrageous statements to worldly richs.
2nd attempt to post...

The Canadian mooners reminded me of one of my favorite ditties from silly song man, Heywood Banks: "Press your buns against the window, and I'll know you are home..."

THE JUICE IS GETTIN' SQUEEZED! [insert groans and rim-shot here]

As far as WPITW, it sounds like Michelle has been hanging around Larry's Chinese dishwasher! And, I thought the bi-weekly Santorum joke was going to lead to a Senator Craig joke, but where Keith took it was good, too.
2nd attempt to post...

I thought the final story about the horrific fires in southern California was beautifully produced and presented. There can be no more powerful testament to not only the horror but to the bravery, compassion, and the spirit of those most directly affected by the fires and to those who are putting their lives at risk reporting on and fighting the fires than simply using the pictures and the words of the people involved. I hope lives and property can be restored and rebuilt as soon as possible and that peace can come to families who've lost loved ones.
So If Al Qeada set the wildfires doesn't that mean they are now fighting us over here.  Can we have our military back now?
jen'il (12:03 PM): Touche'
BPITW and WPITW.  I was so pleased to see the little smily face back.  My six year old son loves to watch this part of your show.  He refers to the smiley faces as "frowny guy" and "happy guy."

He was so excited to see them make an appearance again!!!
I believe I've thought of the perfect song to symbolize the "relationship" between FAUX News and the Republicans - the Barbara Mandrell classic "If Lovin' You is Wrong, I Don't Wanna Be Right." What say you all?

Larry- California should get reimbursed because they are part of our country. As a country we have chosen to share both one anothers burdens and wealth.  It is kind of the whole point of being a country.  If this is not okay with you you have two options, change the government into one that more closely resembles parts of africa or feel free to leave.
Krista (12:03 PM Post): A big Ditto.
To Keith Olbermann: we all wanted to know what your impressions were going to be last night regarding Rudy Giuliani "rooting" for the Red Sox to win the World Series, so we all missed Josh Beckett's first inning where the Rockies went down swinging, 1-2-3. But it was worth it.  You gave us all quite a chuckle. It was a very funny segment, and everyone up here felt you handled it just right. With class, something you don't see too often between the fans from our two cities when it comes to baseball. Your friend Terry Francona would have been proud of the segment had he not been busy. And I bet he would have had a good laugh like we all did as we listened to you.

As I commented on the Baseball Board, tonight may be Curt Schilling's last start ever for the Red Sox. Well, he set out and did what he wanted to do when he signed with us: to help in our quest to beat the Yankees and take the Red Sox to the World Series.

Twice.

Thanks for the memories Curt. You took us on one helluva ride.
Now who in today's American Politics are Anti-Religion, Pro-Scocalist, want nothing to do with "Outdated Morality", and are violently so? They would be the Modern Jacobins.
David Molinero

--- Frankly David, I don't think anyone in US politics fits that "strawman" description. If you really think so and are not just using this old ruse to make political smears, then you are in a dream world.
Pam,

As much as we disagree (ON EVERYTHING)hope you are OK!
Larry, my shortsighted fellow southerner (I cringed when I wrote that) CA pays the same national government we do.  When the rich Charlestonians watch their beachfront mansions leave with the tide, the government pays for those, too.  You want to defend something, explain why our government pays for the replacement of rich folks houses when they knew going in they built on temporary real estate.  The Fires in SoCal were a lot more defensible.  dimwit.
"Now who in today's American Politics are Anti-Religion, Pro-Scocalist, want nothing to do with "Outdated Morality", and are violently so? They would be the Modern Jacobins."
David Molinero

And those that claim to be morally superior while dallying with prostitutes and crystal meth and cheating on there wives: modern day republicans.

Those that claim they'll be vigilant and keep America safe when they're so clueless and lazy they ignore memos about terrorist attack, and can't even tell their campaign managers are selling pounds of cocaine, or pretending to be state troopers:modern day republicans.

The ones that insist they're the party of patriotism and supporting the troops, who allowed soldiers to die because they were improperly equipt, or go home wounded to a beauracratic maze and moldy hospital rooms. And who allow their minions to smear vets:modern day republicans.

And no inaccurate cherry-picked history lesson from some loyal bushie on a bulletin board is going to change that.
NEWS HOLE - SECOND ATTEMPT TO POST-FIRST LAST NIGHT!!

But until that time, can we at least improve the public discourse and act more respectful toward one another - and I mean both sides?
Steve, Wisconsin (Sent Wednesday, October 24, 2007 6:28 PM)

I agree Steve; however, the Republicans not only treated the democrats like unwanted step children for six years, George W. Bush's verbal attacks against the democrats in Congress, both throughout the course of this six-year period, and to date, have been execrable!!

Also, what no has mentioned is the Dick's "f-yourself" statement on the Senate floor!! Was that appropriate, did he apologize? NOOOOOOOOO!! Once again, the Party of Hypocrites said nothing!! Neither did the Dick!!

I personally believe Pete Stark should not have apologized; however, you are entitled to your opinion and I would love to hear your take on Five Deferment Dick's comment!!

PEACE!!

THE PRIMARIES HAVEN'T BEEN HELD YET FOLKS -- Evaluate ALL the candidates and think wisely before you vote.

I will be voting for whoever gets the democratic nomination because this country cannot take four more years of religious authoritarians, neo-con chicken hawks, reckless spending, run-away debt, belligerence, intolerance and incivility.

We cannot afford to be lied into another elective invasion and the judicial system cannot and should not be moved any further to the right.

And finally, the possibility of a theocracy should the Republican party win, scares me to death. In the real world, we cannot afford politicians who insist that religion trumps science and that they should be taught together.
1000 APOLOGIES FOR WASTING TIME AND SPACE WITH A DOUBLE POST!!

Steve Turner Cedar Falls Iowa (Sent Thursday, October 25, 2007 11:57 AM) Absolutely brilliant! Maybe we can get Mr. Spector to "take care of" BinLaden and combo it with the classic wall of sound!!
jen,il (Sent Thursday, October 25, 2007 12:03 PM)  Miss Jen...you are being WAY TOO LOGICAL. We CERTAINLY can't have logic or reason as part of THIS administration.
It is not out of the realm of possibility that terrorist wouldn't use methods such as starting fires to disrupt our economy.  People have to realize, they want to kill all of us if we don't convert to the muslim religion.  People like Keith Olberman are extremely ignorant and it shows in his and MSNBC's ratings.  I would say the majority of the country could care less if we use torture techniques to prevent terrorist attacks.  With all of the Fox bashing MSNBC does, Fox must be doing something right.  They are killing MSNBC in the ratings.  Maybe MSNBC should actually take some lessons from FOX on how to score with viewers.  Obviously their Liberal negativity towards Republicans doesn't resinate with the audience.
Krista, 11:15am
Democrats were painted as taking advantage of a disastrous situation. Those moral Republicans wouldn't do a dirty trick like that!! Where has Louis Gohmert been for the past 6 years?
Have he & his cohorts no sense of irony or do they think we're all stupid?
I'd like to nominate as WPitW Texas Rep Louis Gohmert, who at a meeting Republican House Members about the revised vote on SCHIP on Thursday said  "Democrats are taking advantage of a disaster to loot the American treasury."

Not only does Gohmert deserve the WPitW, he obviously has no sense of irony. or shame.

And by the way, Mr. Molinero (Wednesday, October 24, 2007 11:09 PM) --

What's wrong with equality?
"Malkin has learned from Limbaugh and Coulter. Once in the public eye if you want to make a bundle of money say things and write things that are outrageous and controversial."

Just like Ohlberman does!
Not a good year for left nut libs is it!!  Supposedly the Nov 2006 "referendum" said that most Americans were against the war in Iraq and wanted our soldiers home IMMEDIATELY!  Ha!  Sure!  Even you libs have to laugh at that absurd pipedream.

Even though you are in charge of Congress you can't get ANYTHING done that your MOVEON / MEDIA MATTERS / THINK PROGRESS bosses are pushing for. AND, the very evil George Bush is running rings around all of you EVEN WITH his low polling numbers.

So now even your fellow regressive libs are admitting that the SUrge has been an overwhelming success and you're beginning to realize that Iraq will not help you in '08 because it won't even be an issue by then. So you have to keep trying to undermine our President and co President Rush Limbaugh with absurd lies about "phony soldiers" and fires. I mean, we all know that George Bush can control nature as evidenced by what he did with his biggest weapon Katrina but now he is into fire control. Did you also know that he is responsible for all cancers; toothaches; headaches; car crashes; internet crashes; stubbed toes and so many other horrible things I don't want to depress you by mentioning them.

HAve a good day!
Was that a picture of Dick "Darth Vader" Cheney  I saw sleeping during a conference? Gosh, it must be tiring planning the destruction of this country.

"Twisted Krista , why should California get reimbursement from the feds ? Please explain." Larry Charleston, SC

What, you forsake us again today, Mr Rarry? I starting to think you don't really care about Chinese dishwashers so much you claim earlier.

Oh, and Mr Rarry, are you giving "Andrew (Charleston, SC)" the day off today? You typical lazy repubrican, never want to do any work, and since you so dense you think everyone else so stupid they believe another guy from Chareston that hate Keith just happen to come to Keith board and put his location in parenthesis.

Lazy foolish Rarry, you need to manage you imaginary friends more efficently if you ever hope to defeat honorable round-eyed blond goddess.
Great show last night Keith! Thanks for changing WPITW back to the way it was!

I would like to inform everyone to go to:

www.crooksandliars.com

and PLEASE watch the video of Maher Arar's testimony to congress concerning his experience of being tortured. Rep. Dana Rohrbacher really PISSES me off by trivializing the agony this man went through.

About Shrub's visit to CA. It is just another photo opportunity for him. That is why it took him so long to go. They needed to prepare him. Why didn't they just use the clones of Shrub that Dick Cheney has stashed in that man-sized safe? Maybe Dick was out of strings.
Rana. Way to go. If he ever said anything bad about Native-Americans, I'd find him and Scalp him...or worse, I'd rig his nickel slot machine.  We've been fighting terrorists since 1492, and he qualifies as one. Free Leonard Peltier!
Rana -

You have every right to defend your heritage!! I read what the bigot wrote about the "Jordanian lifestyle".

Also, "Marion Jones on steroids", too funny!!

PEACE & LOVE!!
I've been a Rockies fan since Andre, Dante, Larry and Vinny hit over 40 home runs each in one season back when every game was a sell out. I even added a visit to Coors Field on my way to The Rocky Mountains. The Rockies clobbered the Giant 13-4. They need to win the World Series for Todd Helton, who is one of the best in the game. Let's get it together. If the Bosox win again and go up 2-0 you probably can kiss it goodbye.
GRRRRRR!!!! I posted a couple lengthy posts while at a different computer at 4:45 AM about the job that is being done out in California.  So let me try this again from memory.

The coordination between local, state, and fed official is going very well at this point.  There was plenty of resources provided by the federal government and there was not a shortage as a result of Iraq.  Nice try Keith, you were really reaching last night.  Bush has done all that has been asked of him, and the Governor is happy with the federal response.  The key difference between this and Katrina is you have  a state official engaged and getting it done.  This is how emergency response should work

I going to condense my writings in to one post, so it may seem to ramble.  Jen, you basically called me a sheep and said that we don't allow any criticism of Bush.  That is where you are far off.  I would agree that some of the criticism of the Bush adminstration is well founded, however in an instance where the events hadn't even unfolded, you go after Bush is not of value.  The response to Katrina by local, state, and federal officials was terrible, but here the response has been very good.  So I believe that before you start criticizing someone, establish whether the criticism is warranted based on facts, develop your argument why the criticism is warranted, and state your case.  Otherwise, like in this case, it is baseless accusations.    baaaaah

As for Keith O, the same goes for you. You were reaching for something to blame bush for, and it was very transparent.

I was hopeful that the response would be good to this disaster, and so far it has been.  Stay safe in CA and all other locations

Pam,
As much as we disagree (ON EVERYTHING)hope you are OK!

It is not out of the realm of possibility that terrorist wouldn't use methods such as starting fires to disrupt our economy.  Mark, Phx, AZ (Sent Thursday, October 25, 2007 12:58 PM)

Okay, then what do you suggest we do about that, Mark?  Fight a war with Iraq to prevent some zealot from starting fires in Southern California?  How did that work out, anyway?

Who knows what else we might prevent if we start a war with Iran?  I can hardly wait to see.
A Chinese Dishwasher, Chinatown (Sent Thursday, October 25, 2007 1:18 PM)

Mary Mac - I, too, welcome you to the blog and also hope you stay!! Thank you for your concern, it is greatly appreciated!!

This blog used to update rapidly; occasionally, the moderators would even post a comment to the bloggers.

I will continue to email daily until the blog is what it once was!!

Again, welcome and please keep coming back!!

"Mike, Baltimore Md (Sent Thursday, October 25, 2007 1:11 PM)"

Well said Mike! And accurate!

Worst person in the world honors should go to Keith and Senator Barbara Boxer.  Both want to blame the Bush administration for the wild fires in California.  There are plenty of National Guard troops available and there is more than enough equipment available.  The next thing you liberals will try and accuse Bush of setting the fires, for his amusement.  Both Boxer and Olbermann owe the american people and the Bush white house a public apology.
nuanced (Sent Thursday, October 25, 2007 12:18 PM) I HATE THAT MOTHER FREAKIN' SONG, so it's perfect!

A Chinese Dishwasher, Chinatown (Sent Thursday, October 25, 2007 1:18 PM)  Do you do your WONDERFUL work in San Francisco's Chinatown? If so, step over a few blocks, get a latte at Caffe Trieste, and give my regards to Mr. Ferlinghetti over at City Lights. And, for heaven's sake, KEEP POSTING HERE because you are too funny!! :D

but your point on Constitutional framers is also wrong. See these bios written by someone who was actually there and so would have known

My heart goes out to all those in California -- the fire images are absolutely incredible.

Shame on those who say "these things do happen." I've heard quite enough of that nonsense this year in the aftermath of various tragedies and disasters. I don't wish any of these ills on anyone, but those without compassion are indeed worthy of contempt.

Tom, DC (1:11 PM Post): "Just like Olbermann does". So then you agree Tom that Malkin has learned from Limbaugh and Coulter that the way to make a bundle of money is to say things and write things that are outrageous and controversial?
Nanalinda, San Antonio, TX (Sent Thursday, October 25, 2007 1:00 PM)  I'd suspect a little from column A and a little from column B.

Scott Copeland,Naples Fl (Sent Thursday, October 25, 2007 1:01 PM)  Thanks for your post, also! Irony is beyond their realm of "higher" thinking, and they've lacked shame for a long, long, LONG time.
Leave it to a liberal like you Keith to try and politicize a natural disaster like a fire. It won't work with this fire, because can see all the good things that are being done. I know you won't give up, though. Nice try. You'll have to wait for more bad news. Your problem with this disaster was you guys couldn't rely on an incompetent mayor and governor to push your agenda.
SSgt Chuck Walker, Fort George G. Meade, MD (Sent Thursday, October 25, 2007 9:52 AM)

I guess you'd know about that since you have an incompetent president pushing your half-assed agenda.

I'll bite.  Who? Name three.

And dear moderator(s): Why are posts under my usual pseudonym (Wrightwing) falling into the void while others (which I shall decline to identity) posted a minute later see daylight?  If you're deliberately blocking me, please at least have the integrity to explain why. What would you call the people who disrupted church service in San Francisco a few Sundays back that was ignored by the various news service?
I'm not a religious person, but I could never support the Militant Anti-Religion movement that's growing.

Then there's the crowd that want the Government to provided everything, despite personal behavior that would lead to the gutter. I'm just a simple man who believes a man provides for his family, and Government Hand-outs leads to SLAVERY; And in the words of George Washington, "Government is a cruel master."

Just let me work, fulfill the needs of my family, and let me enjoy the fruits of my labors, and keep the Government out of my life as much as possible.
Wow , another crushing defeat for Harry Reid. He let a bigoted , racist judge get confirmed to the 5th circuit. Shame on him !

Let's see , "W" wins again , but Harry does have that minimum wage increase to fall back on. LOL
