Countdown Thursday: Showdown with Iran

Posted: Thursday, October 25, 2007 8:59 PM by Countdown
Filed Under:

David Shuster in for Keith tonight...

In The Line of FiringsOur fifth story on the Countdown: The Bush administration, once again is beating the drums of war... this time against Iran. And from the "way-back file," Hans Blix, the former chief weapons inspector of the United Nations -- remember him? -- he says President Bush is over-reacting. Meanwhile, President Putin of Russia... says the U-S is painting Iran into a corner. To paraphrase Yogi Berra... could this be Deja Vu all over again?

Sir Rudy of 9/11: Rudy Giuliani's private testimony before the September 11th Commission was not supposed to see the light of day until after the '08 election. Parts of it have leaked... and the words of Candidate Rudy versus Mayor Rudy don't have nearly the same bravado. Giuliani's real terror credentials...

ODDBALL: Dick Cheney caught sleeping, need we say more?

Fires Still BurningHurricane Katrina hit on a Sunday night. The President flew over the devastated city Wednesday - on his way back to Washington DC. Tonight in our third story on the Countdown - the President has now learned, if not the actual lesson of that blunder, then the P-R lesson. The wildfires in Southern California started raging out of control on Sunday night. But this time - President Bush was on the ground today. More on that visit in a moment.

Don't Taze me Bro!  When it comes to taking a stand and raging against the machine, getting tasered by campus police during a John Kerry speech isn't exactly on a par with facing-down a tank in Tiananmen Square. Still, our number two story set off a 50-thousand volt controversy last month, spreading like wildfire on the internet, and triggering a flood of argument over free speech, police power and the right to act a bit nutty in public.  Kerry Sanders has the latest on the "bro" who refused to go quietly.

Down Goes OsmondBlame it on diet pills. Blame it on divorce. Even blame it on Rio. But for heaven's sake, Marie Osmond, don't blame your fainting spell on the California fires. In our number one story on the Countdown, the analysis of Ms. Osmond's falling-out continues full-throttle, with the oddest assessment coming from... Ms. Osmond.

Krista - Sure Meier is a publicity hound but when did that become a crime.  He is certainly no worse than coultergiest and people put up with here nonsense without tazing her.  Of course she would probably enjoy it.  I think the real point of this story is when did being annoying become a crime and what is excessive force.  Every week there is a story about someone inappropriatly being tazed.  There was even a story of a man holding a baby being tazed and dropping the baby.  We have become so frightened of each other in this country we allow police to do what ever they want.  I know some policemen and they are nice guys but they all they like the authority a little to much.
Mark in AZ: History will prove Bush right on Iraq and a lot of other issues? Do you mean like the way history showed LBJ and Nixon to be right about Viet Nam? Or will history show Bush to be right about his crackpot econmoics? But back to Iraq. Here's a checklist for you of what Bush has gotten WRONG about Iraq already:
1) Saddam Hussein has ties to Al Qaeda
2) Saddam Hussein has WMDS
3) We'll be greeted as Liberators
4) The war could last 6 days 6 weeks I doubt 6   months
5) We know the WMDS are in and around Baghdad and Tikrit and to the North, South, East, and West
(that's my favorite)
6) The insurgency is in it's last violent throes.
7) I'm from Texas "bring em on"
8) Iraq has sought to buy yellowcake uranium from Africa
9) By fighting them over there we won't have to fight them here. Question: How are the insurgents supposed to get here, swim ?
Compared with this list off the top of my head what else will history reveal; over the course of time; that Bush has gotten wrong?
Of course I haven't touched upon the culture of corruption, looting of the treasury, war profiteering, crackpot economics, appointing ideological firebrands to The Supreme Court, Terri Schiavo, Katrina, Gitmo etc.
So just how will History prove this Jethro Bodine of Presidents  right about anything?
Why should anyone here give this administration any credibility whatsoever?
They have proven themselves repeatedly to be untrustworthy and dead wrong in their analyses.
Yep Iraq... deja vu all over again.
#1..Gee Marie, you originally said the fainting is something that happens to you sometimes when you "get winded". So which is it? Blaming the CA fires for it was not a nice thing.
I am afraid for the long term affect these fires will have on people. At risk are always the very young, and the very old. But us in the middle, also have a great risk. Those particles in the air, chemicals released and other yucky things we breathe, will all take it's toll on folks health. Those people with compromised respiratory problems..asthma for instance, are at risk now. It's one thing to watch out for. This may prove to be almost as dangerous as the folks exposed the aftermath of 9/11.
Would the person and/or persons on this blog who keeps whining about UPDATES please get a life? Why should the moderator be expected to be there 24/7 just to appease you? I suggest an update on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 11 AM, 4 PM and 9 PM with Saturdays and Sundays off. Then everyone knows the schedule and maybe we'll see who has the first panic attack.
UPDATE, IT'S BEEN NEARLY 13 HOURS AND I AM COUNTING.
Mark in AZ: Are we  safer without Saddam Hussein and his sons in power in Iraq? I say no. At least he was a buffer against the Iranians. Yeah he was a brutal S.O.B. but he was contained and not a threat to us.
Are we safer being in the middle of a proxy war between the Saudis and the Iranians?
As for Iranians, Venezuelans, and, Cubans being ruled by lunatics you might want to put us in that mix too!
By advocating torture you are showing just how profoundly ignorant you are.
These times we live in are no more perilous than the cold war. Remember when there were THOUSANDS OF NUCLEAR MISSILES pointed at us? I do.
We have faced fanatic suicide bombers before and did not torture their allies.
Did we torture German or Japanese POWS? No! We treated them humanely. All they wanted was to rule the world from Berlin and Tokyo.
When we torture captives, hold them without charges,
when we disappear people we become as evil as the jihadists say we are.
What part of that don't you understand?
BTW The R's are TOAST next year. Done in by their own hubris, especially if the "Krazy Kristians" stay home or vote 3rd party.
Rana and Pam: I would like you to check out The I-95
Song. It describes Larry (and a few others here) to a Tee!
deja vu---

Would the world be a safer place with Sadaam and his sons still alive and in power??   Mark, AZ

--- a big definite yes. Not even close. I think over 600,000 dead Iraqis would agree with me.
I sincerely hope Sue comes back!! COUNTDOWN, PLEASE update the blog!!
My friends and I recently took a test, answering 30 various types of questions involving politics and other subjects. A score of 0 is far left, 20 is the center and 40 is far right, which was likened to Reagan. I scored 38. Is that conservative enough for ya?
Full Moon (Sent Thursday, October 25, 2007 7:51 PM)

----  Full Moon, I'd like to take that test and post my score. Assuming of course it is a fair test with no "have you stopped beating your spouse, yes or no" questions. Can you provide a link?  If 40 is the highest far right score I think someone will need to revise and recalibrate the test for the Bushies to stay on the scale.
Anybody know a quick way to get to the end of a long thread other than, scroll scroll scroll down, next, scroll, scroll, scroll, next, scroll, scroll ...
Mark, AZ asks:  I want to ask you Liberals one question....Would the world be a safer place with Sadaam and his sons still alive and in power??

In a word, "yes."  In two words, "Hell yes."  I can't even imagine anyone asking that question anymore.  Mr. Hussein & Sons, Inc. never was the problem, as has been proved over and over and over.  They were a problem to their enemies in Iraq, but a threat to the world?  Please.
OK - Last time David Schuster was on I didn't watch - but this time I decided to hang with him & I have to say he's not half bad - glad he got the purple-tie memo!! Keith - since you obviously had time to do your little spots, couldn't you have phoned in WPITW??
Just a suggestion for next time (if there is even a game six!)
ANOTHER BLOOGER SUGGESTED A BOYCOTT TODAY, IT WAS A BRILLIANT IDEA!!

Laura, I do have a crystal ball and Hillary is gonna lose HUGE.
Mark, AZ (Sent Thursday, October 25, 2007 8:45 PM)

Middle Earth isn’t the only place where they use crystal balls, you know.  The Wicked Witch of the West tried to use one of those to scare me, too.  Hers wasn’t right, either.  Why?  Because it failed to show that my friends were sneaking up on her from behind.

Don’t forget to look behind you, Mark.  Change is coming.
wtf. i was medTATING WHn i hit tht car, like th vp.

Mark from AZ...funny but sad to hear from a member of the 1 in 4 still on board with this sham of an administration. Though I do admire the bravery it must take to admit to it, I wonder how if feels to be so out of touch. Good luck to you and yours.

Oh, my simple naïve little followers, this is what I so like about you.  You think you know things, that are simply not so.  It makes you oh so much easier to manipulate.   By the way yesterday was my birthday, perhaps you could make a little donation to my campaign?  Thank you for your support.

Professer Henry Higgins,London, England (Sent Thursday, October 25, 2007 9:01 PM)

Thank you Professor,  what is so unlikely that one (or actually lots of one’s) would donate well over 10% of their annual income to ensure I become president?  I mean really Chinese dishwashers are highly paid individuals eh?  I appreciate your support and you can donate directly through my campaign web site.
I guess that my answer to John Doe, and Anomaly just couldn't get past the Jacobin minded moderator.  David Molinero (Thursday, October 25, 2007 11:42 PM)

You’ll probably be surprised to hear this, Mr. Molinero, but I’ve already had at least one comment today that failed to “get past the Jacobin minded moderator.”

The Whippersnapper is SO picky.  But don’t despair, Mr. Molinero, from the Whippersnapper’s shot selection (at least in my case), I’m pretty sure he/she/it at least READ it.

Reassuring, really, in an altogether uncertain blogosphere.
Believer in looking forward by looking back. (Sent Friday, October 26, 2007 11:03 AM)

Thank you Believer, that was good reading.  It’s good to see facts, rather than the usual exaggerated and emotional fear mongering more common on this blog about this topic.
Full Moon (Sent Friday, October 26, 2007 11:31 AM)

Damn, I thought we chased your mean a$$ away......Please let us know what more we need to do, you are mean.

Eclipse please.........
Please don't be *that* way to the "Don't Taze me Bro!" guy.

The video shows ~ 6 cops carrying a guy out of a room and then *stop* and taze him.  Nobody deserves that.

Maybe it saved one of the cops a bruise, but nobody in the world thinks that protester guy was about to get away.  There were 40 feet away from being out of the hall.

But I think the worst is the media storm and ridicule.  Again nobody deserves that, at least not to this level.

It seems like the same people that complain that this generation doesn’t step up treat this guy like he deserved what he got.   So what if he isn't the perfect martyr.  HE was out there and doing something.   **Any reasonable person should now pause before doing anything other than most polite protesting.**  Even Countdown makes him the butt of jokes and can’t give him some credit for the good he was trying to do.  I don’t care that he might be a somewhat crazy jerk.  I don’t know if I agree with what he was saying, but I don’t care.  He could be mean to puppies and that wouldn’t have anything to do with this.

I don’t want us in Iran.  I want out of Iraq.  I want a country where hundreds of thousands of college students like "Don't Taze me Bro!" show up and change the debate.  It’s all got to start with one of two protesters.

Countdown just ate its own young
I love David Shuster I think they should give him tuckers show and maybe Racheal Maddow could replace dan abrams.
Tonight's Worst Person In The World ...... the News Hole Moderator.

Boooooooooooooooo.
Bill Rochester NY (Sent Friday, October 26, 2007 11:48 AM)

I will Bill, thanks!!  Rana (or Reema) don’t deserve what the pig’s dished out.  Rana began reading the blog at the beginning of summer when she came home from New York.

She loved it, but was simply horrified by the bigot’s words; she then went from hurt to angry to hurt again!! Reema calls him a “dirty old man who surfs the web when he can’t find little girls to bother.” (Something to think about??)  Reema doesn’t give a crap what Larry thinks; Rana is a bit more sensitive!!

Also, your “11:12 AM" post to Mr. Antichrist - brilliant!! One of the best pieces of writing I've seen here friend!!

PEACE!!

I hope that in addition to Meiers countdown has on Madea Benjamin from code pink who has been banned from capital hill and put on a watch list that kept her from speaking in Canada.  Arresting people for peaceful protesting has a quashing effect on future protesters and thus maintains the status quo.  While I still go to marches I refuse to segregate myself in a pen with other protesters far away from the officials we are trying to reach.  I also fail to understand how the capital police can issue a ban on anyone from excersizing thier right to free speech in the capital but that is exactly what they have done.  James Madison is rolling over in his grave.
HRC (1:33 PM Post): Oh how you are showing your ignorance once again HRC. I was never going to give you my vote in the first place. I am writing in the name of my choice.

Scott, NV: Welcome back Scott.

Mark, AZ: Your comments are not even reasonable to those on the right. In fact they are not reasonable period.

Full Moon: "Would the person and/or persons on this blog who keeps whining about UPDATES please get a life?" Well damn, that's about every poster on this blog, so everyone, according to Full Moon, get a life. Oh but wait. Moon is the one who supports Limbaugh. Forget it, Moon's comments do not count.
Full Moon (Sent Friday, October 26, 2007 12:16 PM)

Hey Full Moon -- good to hear from you.  But why do  you say you can ONLY think of those?  Those were pretty darn good.  I especially liked “Wildfire” in this context (without the horse, of course), and Bob Seger is one of my all-time favorites.  Always makes me want to spend some time "Down on Main Street."

Regarding your 11:38 a.m. post on this thread, I wonder what you mean by the “first” panic attack.  But don't bother to clarify (unless you want to).  I'm not completely sure, but I think that was one of those "rhetorical" questions I've heard so much about on this blog.
Believer and Scott henderson-  All credible climate scientist agree global warming is happening and is caused by us.  We can believe the scientists or we can believe the people funded by big oil it's our choice.  If we listen to the scientists and they're wrong what we get is non polluting sources of energy and a whole new industry of renewable power sources and a middle east that becomes irrelevant because we don't need the oil.  If we listen to the industry schills the oil industry continues to dictate our foreign policy pollution rates in general continue to rise leading to more cancers and lung disorders, but on the flip side we get to keep our SUVs.  If the industry schills are wrong the planet becomes a place that favors not mammels but giant reptiles, because that is the last time there was this much carbon in the air, making humans if not completly extinct, irrelevant as a species on planet earth.  We get to decide and if we don't do the right thing we probably don't deserve to live on the planet god put us on.  I'm fairly certain god loves polar bears more than SUVs.
scott henderson nv (Sent Friday, October 26, 2007 1:39 PM)

My goodness, scott, do you realize that everyone's been looking for you?  Or have you really been with us all along?
I see scotty little letters is back..that True Liberal person was really pesky.
James, NYC, NY (Sent Friday, October 26, 2007 12:49 AM)   Hi, James. I never had a problem with Andrew or anyone asking "tough questions." What I DO have a problem with is the whole premeditated "staging" aspect of the whole deal.
Please post ALL of the missing comments; many are missing News Hole.  Thanks!!

Also, an update would be nice!!

PEACE!!
anonymous (Sent Friday, October 26, 2007 4:04 AM) Well, I agree with half of what you said, and I'll repeat some of what I said just to refresh your memory. If Kerry would've been a little more proactive when it looked like the situation was getting out of hand, it may not have gone as far as it did. The cops should've resorted to the taser as a last last LAST resort.
I will say this administration is probably right about Iran, despite all you Liberals who seem to live in a fantasy world.  Mark, AZ (Sent Thursday, October 25, 2007 9:24 PM)

Mark – You seem to have that backwards.  AZ is obviously not much like OZ.  I’m one of those liberals who lives in a fantasy world BECAUSE of this administration.  OZ looks really good when you’re sitting inside looking out at a sepia-toned reality --

-- the stark, threadbare, and twisted reality created by Mr. Bush and his cronies out of the whole, colorful, and rich landscape they inherited.

Now, if we could just get rid of Coulter and Perino.  Maybe I can convince Professor Higgins to take them off my hands and teach them to talk pretty.
update, find all comments.
jen,il (Sent Friday, October 26, 2007 11:08 AM) I've got a picture of CoulterGeist being tazed with a look of ecstasy on her face now; THANKS A BUNCH FOR THAT IMAGE! :) Anyway, I know, sadly, that people being annoying isn't against the law, and I absolutely agree that this situation did not have to get to a tasering point. Kerry should've shown some backbone.
I don't have a thing to say about this string except that I sneaked out on Shuster the Rooster to catch a repeat of Anderson Cooper on THE COLBERT REPORT.  I got a few things to say in defense of the Colbert candidacy.

I say illegal, shmillegal.  I realize there's a law about corporate sponsorship, but heck, Comedy Central and Frito Lay don't have axes to grind with anybody.  I wish myself Colbert would get sponsorships from Bud Lite and Gorton seafood (especially their beer battered shrimp).  In fact, I'm thinking about moving to SC to see if they can't use a wonky old psychic in the campaign.  Unless of course he sells out to big oil and/or Halliburton.

Another thing Colbert has going for him:  quite simply he's cuter than all of them except maybe Mike Gravel.  I have no problem whatsoever also with the idea of a REAL comedian in the WH; these jokers there now passed their sellby date back about 2001.

KO, was your presence at Fenway Park purely in the spirit of intellectual inquiry, or should you watch what you call Rudy Giuliani?

And lastly, I don't think I would turn my back in the studio on Dana Milbank.  That guy is HOT!  Dare we dream he might sit in for you some dark dismal night when otherwise we might be tempted over to some other venue?
To Laura, Jen, Flipkid, Carol, Scott, Bill, Krista, Witch King, Gator, KC, all you others who have, in this forum, taken the president to task, and also, those of you who read, sympathize, but don't contribute, I request of you a favor:
At my blogsite, www.freddsjourney.com, I have posted "The War Prayer," an extraordinary prose poem written by  Mark Twain during the Spanish-American War.  I have emailed it to my congressional representatives.  I am asking all sympathizers to do the same, and tell their friends, and pass it forward.  We need to flood Congress with copies of this essay, a piece of beautiful anti-war prose, and tell them that we don't want to stand by any longer and take this s**t.  We sent these a*&#*!#s to Congress in 2006 to end this madness, and no one is doing any thing about it, because they are afraid of what We The People will say in the elections next year.  We need to come out from underground.
And what I've come to understand is that this craziness continues because the "leadership" believes that no one REALLY cares.  PLEASE, PLEASE, let's show them how much we do care.

Larry - Why is it when we express anger for this administration, you feel the need to bring up past political leaders (only democrats)?  We're talking about NOW!  Sorry, but we do not dwell on the past only the present.  Also, I don't care if they are democrats or republicans - do the crime, do the time!  Unfortunately, repubs cannot admit when their people are wrong.
Hey Bill from Rochester, NY,

Kathy, Chicago . And to which criminals to you refer ?
Former Mayor Daley ? Former President Clinton ? Former Rep. Dan Rostenkowski ? Too many liberal criminals to choose from !

Larry Charleston, SC (Sent Friday, October 26, 2007 10:08 AM)

I think she was probably referring to Former President Nixon, 'Scooter' Libby, Senator Larry Craig, and George W. Bush.  Too many corrupticans to choose from!

Mark, AZ (Sent Thursday, October 25, 2007 8:45 PM)

Crystal balls are used in divination.  Divination is sorcery, akin to tarot cards, something that isn't part of righteous Christian beliefs.  If you're practicing such devilry, then you must be a WITCH!  GET HIM!  *forms lynch mob*
