Countdown Wednesday: Power Play

Executive vs. Legislative: "Democracy," said the French-born, New Zealand historian and surgeon Robert Briffault, "is the worst form of government. It is the most inefficient, the most clumsy, the most unpractical... it reduces wisdom to impotence and secures the triumph of folly, ignorance, clap-trap, and demagogy... yet democracy is the only form of social order admissible, because it is the only one consistent with justice." Mr. Bush evidently stopped listening at the word "ignorance." He is evidently taking us from Democracy to Government-by-Administrative Order.

Troubled WaterboardThe number two Democrat in the Senate says he cannot vote to confirm Attorney General Designate Mukasey, if Judge Mukasey cannot acknowledge that waterboarding is torture.

ODDBALL
: Japanese Dogs playing jump rope and a Drag Race with real Drag Queens.

The Horserace: The line of the night at the latest Democratic presidential debate has turned into a fight of words between Senator Joe Biden and former Mayor Rudolf Giuliani. A fight that evidently went one round too many for Mr. Giuliani. His replies today invoked a series of 1987 speeches, in which Biden credited much of his remarks to British politician Neil Kinnock. All save for one, in which he infamously left Kinnock out of it and thus wound up inadvertently plagiarizing the material. Mr. Giuliani rehashed all this today, evidently forgetting that 26 days ago, he was accused by Mitt Romney's campaign of plagiarizing materials from Romney's speeches and ads.

Tabby Time: Britney Spears decides to do Ryan Seacrest's radio show then decides to take a shower half way through the interview.

WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD: John Gibson versus Morton Kondracke versus MLB for top honors.

Political FunniesDemocratic Presidential Debate - October 30th. Halloween - October 31st. Not surprising then that Halloween costumes came up at the debate. But there was also talk of UFOs and extra-terrestrial life. All of it fodder for political impressionist and satirist Jim Morris.

#5 – The president is laying claim to all the tools he can.  – Howard Fineman

Is Mr. Fineman trying to say that Mr. Bush is claiming possession of Congress?  Nothing new there.

Disabusing Mr. Bush of his wonderfulness?  -- Countdown

Not that hard.  I think that five minutes in a room alone with Countdown -- or most of the folks on this blog, for that matter -- would pretty much accomplish that.

But do me a favor.  Next week, don’t talk about punting.  Talk about fumbling.
#4 – How far we’ve come since the Nixon administration?  In which direction?

One flew east.  One flew west.
One flew over the Cuckoo’s nest.
I liked the jump-roping doggies! And, I can't seem to come up with too many "deep" thoughts tonight - maybe too much Halloween candy?

I am SO GLAD that GWB's Halloween thoughts about the new SCHIP bill were played; I had forgotten just how clever of a guy "the decider" is. SCHIP as a "trick" on Halloween? Wow, it was so funny; I forgot to laugh.

"...the palace of pathology" line from James Moore was great!

It sounds like we need to add Mort Kondracke to the waterboarding list if he's so crazy about the idea and doesn't think it does "lasting harm." I LOVED KEITH'S RANT! I also want to hear more of Keith's Dana Perino impressions!

Well, like I said last night, the Dictator-Wanna-Be is invading "the Circle City" tomorrow, and I must prepare materials for the cleansing rituals that must follow after such a pestulance. On that note, sweet dreams!
Anyone who remembers the Dictator Directive BushCo issued earlier this year needs to be afraid ..... very afraid.  Remember, BushCo himself said "it would be easier if this were a dictatorship - as long as I was the dictator ..... heheheh".

It's scary everyday with these horrors controlling our government - not just on Halloween.
#3 – Rudy.  Rudy.  Rudy.  Also a nominee for Biggest Pumpkin Head.  This guy is not worth Countdown’s time.  But keep it up.  Really.  Keep it up.  He's not worth America's time, either.

WPitW – John Gibson –  yet another nominee for Biggest Pumpkin Head.  Kondracke is in a whole other league.  More like Skeletor.
Alternative realities?  Now you’re talking my language, Countdown.

Speaking of which, I’ve been preparing off the field for Gitmo by reading Harry Potter.  I figure I’ll need all the alternative realities I can get.

But Muggles?  Who knew?  Much more entertaining than that pack of neocon cards that hangs around here.
WPitW – Morton Kondracke.  Ummmmmm.  Come on up to the Dark Tower and we’ll see how much YOU like “enhanced interrogation.”

And if -- I mean, when -- you leave, take Perino with you.  Turns out she didn’t like global warming as much as she thought she would.  Drop her in Manhattan so Countdown can study up for his new career as an impressionist.

But don’t get too good at it, Countdown.  We would REALLY hate to mistake you for Perino.
I vividly remember the last throes of the Nixon Insanity because I was serving my nation. It was an incredible education about power and insatiable greed. King George and Buckshot (thanks Hightower), are megalomaniacs. They do bad things (like spying on innocent people or murdering for oil) and then expect bad things to happen to them because they usually do like ( 9-11, done because of our military presence in Saudi Arabia and Bin's innate resentfulness for the House of Saud who formerly bankrolled Junior and flew out at taxpayer expense on Sept. 13. We should on some sunny day pay Bin Laden back for what he wrought. Bush and Buckshot got some bad voodoo enroute!! We need to derail this train for Iran before these oil boys stack more dead for Jesus. They are wacked out of there collective cerebral corteces and even Karl the Creep is out hiding in the bushes somewhere. BOO!! Gravel got axed! happy hunting...
Mr. Kondracke believes that water-boarding isn't torture. I suggest that he gives a public demonstation, with himself as the guinea pig, so that he may prove his theory.
You people at MSNBC, especially keith olberkid, must watch Fox continously because all you do is attack the people that are on that network.  Try having a show just on your own merits - or isn't that possible?
#1. Big argument at the White House over costumes for the Halloween Party.  Seems Dubya and Cheney both wanted to go as Audie Murphey. #2. Unnamed sources said Britter didn't shower, she just used the Studio Bidet with the water jet turned up to 'Elephantine'. #3. Biden said, "Don't Give Up the Schip" and Mitt said, "E Pleirusy Unum". Not so much plagiarising, as 'what the hell does that mean?'. #4. Mukasey was tortured into going along with torutre. Can you imagine having to listen to Dubya make 'Waterboarding' sound like fun? #5. I guess Justice and ignorance are the same to this Administration. At least, they hope they are to us.
I am sick of the Liberals wanting everything given to them!!  Mark, AZ (Sent Wednesday, October 31, 2007 8:21 PM)

Mark -- I see your talking points have changed this week.  But no matter.  So have mine.  This week, thanks to Steve from Cedar Rapids, I’m into Booleans.  Or Boors.  Or something like that.

Please listen to me, Mark.  I’m one of those “Liberals” you’re talking about (funny how, once you capitalize it, it almost becomes pejorative -- like NEOCON — and look it up if you don’t know what pejorative means).

You’re sick of Liberals.  Well.  I’m sick of having people like you assume that, because I’m a liberal, I want everything handed to ME.  No one hands anything to me, except maybe the salt at dinner.  (Too much salt on the Booleans, anyway.  Memo to self – give up salt on Booleans.)  I work for it.  I have a day job.  A good day job.  I have health insurance.  Good health insurance.  My household income would not qualify my family for SCHIP, so that means I don’t want SCHIP for me.

I want SCHIP available for others who are not as fortunate as I am.  I live in the same world they do.  What world do you NEOCONS live in?

Dear Keith and his Glorious Producers et all (who are also Glorious): Question - who/what artist did the song with the lyrics "they're coming to take me away ah-ha - ah ha- ah-ha to the Funny Farm...." that's all I can recall form the lyrics on tonight's show?
OK. The Associated Press has confirmed that Britter left to take a shower. The fluid make-up of the shower was unconfirmed but unnamed sources claim it was either 700 gallons of Aquafina(probably ambient), two quarts of Stolichnaya Lemonninya (shaken, not stirred), or 400 liters of Aurica Acunya Tequila(used or unused?. Bottoms up?
Liberals have a preternatural gift for always striking a position on the side of treason. An inconveinent truth (Sent Tuesday, October 30, 2007 10:02 PM)

Personally, I love it when someone calls me “preternatural.”  You bet I’m preternatural.  But likable, you know, in a different sort of way.  Perhaps George Will described me best when he said, "Below his preternatural affability there is some acid and steel."  Acid and steel, for sure.

But, unlike those pesky liberals, I’m very loyal to my boss.  No “treason” here.  And I’ve never outed any of MY spies.

Why don’t you come up to the Dark Tower and we’ll talk it over.  I promise.  No magic tricks.  Just preternatural affability.
Scott Copeland, Naples, Fl (Sent Tuesday, October 30, 2007 11:38 PM)

If you don’t like Hillary’s “Romulan eyebrows,” I suppose you wouldn’t like my Vulcan ears, either.  But what about my Klingon complexion?
Lieberman acknowledged Tuesday that some senators don’t trust Bush, but said, “At some point, we’ve got to get over this distrust and partisanship.”

--- can someone recommend an hallucinagen, brainwashing, or torture to help me get over my reality-based distrust of Bush?
Excuse my newshole, #4 - you spelled Iran incorrectly. Larry Charleston, SC (Sent Wednesday, October 31, 2007 3:43 PM)

Excuse me, Larry.  I always hate to bother anyone with something as petty as a typographical error.  But –

“Excuse my newshole”?  Whose slip is showing now, Larry?
Run for your lives, everybody! Women and children first
True Liberal (Sent Wednesday, October 31, 2007 6:09 PM)

No, New True, you first.  Please.

But thanks for the reassurance that chivalry is not dead among “true” liberals.
"Democracy," said the French-born, New Zealand historian and surgeon Robert Briffault, "is the worst form of government. Too bad we live in a Representative Republic, huh Brainiac?

The sophistry here is beyond measure....

It is to laugh.

Steve, Cedar Falls -- Sorry.  In a previous post, pending approval by the Whippersnapper, I mistakenly said "Cedar Rapids."

No excuses.  Although, I'll be darned if I could tell you the precise technical difference between a "falls" and a "rapids."  Cedar appears to be the common demoninator, but falls and rapids -- are they the Booleans?
"One last request , please ask Hillary to release her WHITE HOUSE papers. It would be interesting to see what she REALLY thinks !"Larry Charleston, SC

Hey doofus, why don't you publish publicly every single note, letter, and email you and your ex-wife wrote back and forth over a eight year period. Why would you have any expectation of privacy as man and wife, better to release it for public scrutiny, plus it'd be fun counting all the different synonyms she'd use for narrow minded, dishonest, and unsatisfied.
Who the heck cares if we use "waterboarding" on TERRORIST who want to KILL us?  It is comical to listen to the fantasy world the Democrats live in.  I am so sick of the Democrats wanting to raise our taxes to pay for people who are expecting to live off the gov't for free.  Minorities need to get off their behinds and make something of themselves instead of blaming white people for their problems.  How about starting by not having kids they can't afford??  Too many illegitimate kids being born into this world. I thought Dick Cheney dressing his dog in a Darth Vadar costume was hillarious!!  MSNBC should take some lessons from FOX on how to run a network.  The constant Bush bashing liberal bias obvious hasn't done anything for their ratings.  What is Keith Olberman's obsession with Bill O'Reilly?  The more he tries to bash Bill, the higher the ratings O'Reilly gets.  Keep it up Keith!

#1.  Whoever that "impressionist" was, he is no Rich Little...

For a brief and shining moment last week you actually had real news in that final segment, and had a well-done video montage of fires in southern Cal.  Or did I hallucinate?  I could do for more hallucinations, and less "humor" if that's the best you can do.  Really, who picks these future has-beens?
We're still trying to clear all the clinnton-cancer from the last decade. Give medical science a chance
Give medical science a chance (Sent Wednesday, October 31, 2007 6:05 PM)

It's the "Bubububu Stuck on Stupid Clinton" defense, AGAIN!! Don’t you neocons know how stupid you both appear and sound when bringing and/or blaming former President Bill Clinton for EVERYHING??!! I’ll tell you, colossally stupid!! I know it’s impossible to defend George W. Bush in any way, shape or form on his own merits, but I’m sure you could come up with some new talking bobblehead line other that "Clinton did it"!!

Also, I'll borrow a line from Timmy, Milwaukee WI (thanks Timmy) “Another couple of right wing geniuses, I presume? It's the third grade level spelling mistakes guys.”

It’s Clinton, not “clinnton”!!

"NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND"!!

Is it me or no sooner do you focus on a Bushie Boy boundary expansion, that he does it again elsewhere?

He steps on the courts, the congress, the people, the American people & we the people
I’m confused who owes who? I’m Hans and he’s Fraz and Dubya is trying to pump us dry after robbing us.
He used to be such a gurly man, living vicariously as a Texan. Now he proves he is tough by picking on kids programs, the elderly and poor while sending you families on credit to war to die for his war. The make money on that. Then the former gurly petulant fake Texan would have you believe it’s your fault Social Security is in Trouble They owe you 1.5 trillion and interest. But lah dee dah we take it with our closed little minds and live in our little cages of fear and keep electing these guys based on fear. I’m Hans and he’s Franz is going to pump us dry.
This is From MSN’s Money Site today.
Myth No1There is no Social Security trust fund. You may have heard this assertion so often that you'll be surprised to learn that there really IS a Social Security trust fund that collects our payroll taxes and invests the surplus. It's called the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance and Disability Insurance Trust Funds.
What isn't in the trust fund is a big hoard of cash.
Three-quarters of the money that's collected in Social Security taxes goes right out the door again in the form of benefits to Social Security recipients. The surplus that isn't needed to pay benefits is loaned to the federal government to pay for other programs.
In return for this loan, the trust fund gets IOUs in the form of special-issue, interest-paying Treasury bonds. The interest isn't paid in cash, however; the Treasury issues the fund additional bonds for the interest amount. Last year, the fund was credited with $80 billion in interest; the total value of the securities is about $1.5 trillion.
I Hans he's Dubya they are going to bleed us dry.
Democratic Halloween Debate Headline - HILLARY NAILED

Godzilla, Mothra, Reptilicas down for count.

It was the skeleton sword scene from The 7th Voyage of Sinbad all over again. The arrow piercing the dragon from same and the wimpering "help me, help me" cry from the web in the epilog of the original "Fly." ("my my my, said the spider to the fly") The Rolling Stones
My sympathies to the Comcast subscribers who are losing their MSNBC. Here's a blurb about it:

http://blogs.kansascity.com/tvbarn/2007/10/hey-whered-my-m.html

My service switches to Comcast at the end of the year, so I am less than thrilled.
Sorry Hillary, I don't think even Billy "bad boy" Clinton, your partner in mischievous Clintonian wrong-doing, including Mr. Foster and Ms. Lewinsky, can free you from the horrors of The Halloween Debate. You are forever marked as "double-speak," and it will follow you down the campaighn trail.
BUSH/CHENEY - INVENTORS OF THE "FASCIST DEMOCRACY"
Took a look at AOL news; gallop poll says Americans think Iran is world's greatest threat - however, many emailed to say no, it's Bush/Cheney.
I wrote that these two thugs have invented a new concept, designed to totally destroy what they haven't managed to kill in America so far -
It could be called "FACIST DEMOCRACY"
Thanks for your continuing and invaluable comments, Keith! Please keep up the good work.
You can add all the cable news channels together at 8 PM, including Olbermann, and Bill O'Reilly is still #1 with a quarter million viewers to spare. Almost 7 years now. That's a good run.
Bush supporters would be rioting if a dem president attempted half of the tactics Bush has used to circumvent the normal process of governing our country.  Has he never read the Constitution? Has he no respect for any other authority or co-equal branch of govt?  We actually have 2 "Dicks" in high office:  Dick Cheney, and the "Dick"tator in chief.
Hillary Clinton's (as well as Edwards and Obama) stance on driver's licenses for illegal immigrants is dead wrong and will be a big issue in this election.  I was not happy with the immigration reform that Bush proposed, but this stance is illogical at best.  Someone said that the bushies will be out in force.  Well I would ask that person, do you support this New York proposal for driver's licenses for illegals?  Spitzer has watered down the original version, but it still stinks.  This is all about the hispanic vote, and the dems don't want to lose that bloc.  But they risk losing the union support with this position
Here is an interesting cut from an article in Sunday’s New York Times called “The Evangelical Crackup.”

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/28/magazine/28Evangelicals-t.html?ref=politics

“[Bill] Hybels [founded of the Willow Creek Community Church near Chicago] traced the ‘J curve’ of mounting deaths from war through the centuries. ‘In case you are wondering about this, wonder how God feels about all this,’ he said. ‘It breaks the heart of God.’”

Pastor Hybels is referring to wars in general, and in particular to the war in Iraq.  His statement that the war breaks God’s heart naturally begs the question of how he knows this.  Perhaps God speaks to Pastor Hybels.  Let’s accept that for the sake of argument.  After all, I believe that President Bush has said that God speaks to him, and he appears to believe he knows what God wants him to do.

So here’s my question, in rough syllogistic form:

If the war in Iraq breaks God’s heart, and God speaks to George W. Bush, why doesn’t God just tell him to stop it?
Another married family-values-lovin' anti-gay republican resigns after being caught in yet another gay escort scandal.

I'm sure Larry Craig is heaving a huge sigh of relief.
#5 Briffault had it right. No perfection found in a democracy and it sure stumbles a great deal, but it does offer the greater amount of freedoms and social justice. And Bush may be taking us to a Government-By Administrative-Order, but so to have many of our so-called representatives in Wshington been taking us to a Government-By-Special-Interests-Order. Many have forgotten who it is they represent and who they work for. There is no lack of responsibility for an inefficient, bickering and self interest led government among most of those elected to office. Bush just happens to be one of the worst.
Orange Alert! Orange Alert! Orange Alert!
I walked into 7-11 yesterday and the clerk pointed to a sign that said "Happy Halloween, please remove your mask in the store" but I wasn't wearing one.  Ta-rummph
There are 446 days until the end of this regime on 1/20/2009
There are 431 days until the end of this Congress on 1/5/2009 ???
There are 369 days until election day -- 11/4/2008

The first Caucus/Primary hasn't happened yet!  Evaluate ALL the candidates and think wisely before you vote.
And we are counting down.
"DemoCRATsy..." said the Connecticutt-born, Texian Bid'less Bid'nessman Dubya, "uh...fool me once, shame on you...me...look out! Dicki's got his huntin' duds on, pod-NER!"
We can't keep electing people who are against big government to run the government -- they only try harder to make it fail, and then say "See, big government doesn't work!".

We have to elect someone who wants the job AND who wants to do it right AND who understands that Religion has no place in government and Government has no place in the Church/Mosque/Temple.

They are separate for a reason and we should keep them separate -- otherwise you might not agree with the one religion that will win.
In regard to Wednesday's OddBall featuring the drag queen racers:

I would ask the Countdown Staff and Keith to please refrain from using the expression "what a gyp." Many people consider this a derogatory phrase, and while I doubt any harm was intended, it still detracted from what would have been a funny bit.

Thanks and best wishes.

The Political Funnies were a nice ending to the show -- far superior to anything about the Hollywood bimbos.  Thank you.
Biden ought to be very careful when questioning other’s leadership qualifications.  From what I can see he has none.  Rudy will eat his lunch, along with breakfast and dinner – which frankly will be fun to watch.
Here's a beauty for all of us who believe in freedom of speech and the right to assemble.
A Maryland court found against the defendant Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas, which has spent the last couple of years going to military funerals and holding signs that say things like " Thank God for dead soldiers" and "God hates fags". Their belief is because America is tolerant of homosexuality, this is God's punishment for  that tolerance.
While my knee jerk reaction was good, I hope they got put out of buisness, do they have the right to assemble in a public place and voice their opinion, no matter how disgusting? The idea of intruding on a family's loss of a loved to this war is brutal enough, having your fellow Americans vilify this loss is inexcuasable, but do they have the right to be inexcusable? These people aren't against the war, they are just super-anti gay.
I found the article on msn.com under "Funeral pickets lose verdict..."
Please don't write back and yell at me,I'm not supporting the church, I think this is a symptom of the sickness that this country has right now. I just wanted to bring it to what I believe is a very diverse forum and see what you guys thought. I'm really heart sick for any family that had this done to them, but I can see the legal argument this church has.
somebody fire the dude that supposed to update this comment section.  Seriously, how lazy is this guy?
Way to go Joe Biden. anoun a verb and 9/11. that not only applies to Rudy Mussolini but to all of the right wing fearmongering noise machine.
The MSM is showing their true colors by trying to ridicule Dennis Kucinich over his UFO sighting.
Right Wing tool Tim Russert just couldn't let go of that dog.
Kucinich's reply was honest and forthright and humorous.
Why is it that the two candidates who make the most sense on the issues (Kucinich and Gravel) are portayed as Tin-Foil Hat Wackos, while the real Tin-Foil Hat Wackos (Cheney, Bush, Tancredo, hell all of the R's) are portayed as sober and tough minded ?
What happened to the Andrew Meyer interview?

Down with "Keeping Tabs!"
