Countdown Monday: Veteran's Day

Posted: Monday, November 12, 2007 8:59 PM by Countdown
Filed Under:

Veteran's Day:  It is the most solemn and ceremonial of remembrances for our fallen dead and surviving soldiers, dating from the time of our first grim venture into international combat in World War One, the beginning of our role as, if not the policemen of the world, then rather its moral force. The ceremonial laying of the wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier at Arlington National Ceremony on Veterans' Day. And where was the President of the United States? In Waco, Texas. Our fifth story on the Countdown: the Commander in Chief who has sent our troops to their deaths on nonsense intelligence throughout a presidency of loopholes, who has described his own grief at the soldiers' suffering so much he has made a brand name out of it, who has exploited every wound as an opportunity to sell his agenda of fear and his politics of hate...He couldn't be bothered to lay the wreath on Veterans' Day. Why does George W. Bush hate the troops?

You Say Dubai, I say HelloThat FEMA news conference last month -- featuring answers from FEMA, to questions from FEMA -- was rightly ripped, even by the head of Homeland Security. So what happens now that the Clinton campaign has acknowledging planting two questions for their candidate at Iowa events?

ODDBALL: A loose roo, the French and German foreign minister sing, and the tallest guy in America is crowned

Ghost FlightsA mind-numbing, tear your hair out story from England tonight. And from about a dozen different angles. You're an airplane passenger? You've been hit by a gas surcharge? You've had to pay through the nose for a seat? Watch this -- and you're gonna wanna punch somebody. You're an aviation safety expert? You're terrified at the ballooning number of planes in the sky, which traffic controllers have to try to keep from plowing into each other?  Watch this -- and you're gonna wanna punch somebody.  You're aware of global warming or just of pollution? You keep hearing the major international carriers claim they're going to reduce emissions? Watch this -- and you're gonna wanna punch somebody. Our third story on the Countdown:  Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a British Airways plane crossing the Atlantic... with nobody on board. From our affiliated British network ITV we bring you the revelations of so-called ghost flights, by correspondent Mark Eddo...With one final warning....watch this -- and you're gonna wanna punch somebody.

Tame Tom:  Tom Bruise... or rather Cruise... leading our number two story, Keeping Tabs. His latest star turn raising questions about whether his star power has been wounded.

WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD: Delay, Huckabee and Limbaugh vie for tonight's top honors.

Fox Gone WildBill O'Reilly's words often require translation. So "culture warrior" turns into "smut peddler"... just as fast as you can say "great video".  And in our number one story on the Countdown, it isn't just Bill-o showing soft-core porn while railing against soft-core porn. It's the entire Fixed Noise establishment. The latest recorded example -- 4:24 P-M Eastern Standard Time, today. And film-maker Robert Greenwald (who will join us)... has documented a telling slice of it in his four-minute video production. "Family Values"... as seen in the Alice-Through-The-Looking-Glass kaleidoscope that is, Fox News.

Anomaly (searching for tales of glory) (Sent Monday, November 12, 2007 9:27 PM)  No problem...I miss Jim McMahon.
I'm glad to hear someone else besides me call the Iraq war a video game war. That's what it has been to Bush since it began. Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld planned this war in the abstract, with little thought to long term consequences. They neglected to ask the two essential questions that must be asked before embarking on a major military operation. Is our national interest at stake and will we protect this interest by this action? The answer to the first was no and the answer to the second is that we have actually damaged our interest because Iran, Russia, Syria, Hezbolah and Hamas have now extended their influence in the region. A scarier thing has now happened. We have established a precedent for the contractor army which is answerable to no one. Their loyalty is to the company, not the country. The founders wanted a civilian leader to help moderate the military. The civilian leader is answerable to the people. Blackwater has shown that they are answerable to no one. Thanks to the hundreds of millions they have made in Iraq they could now probably beat all but a few armies in the world. Unfortunately, is nothing in place to control them. They are free to sell their services to the highest bidder. They are better equipped in some respects than our military.
To whomever is responsible for all the updates for the thread of last night's show and the new thread with comments already, THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! MUCHAS GRACIAS! Steve, can you say thanks in French? Pam, can you take care of the Italian thanks? And, anyone else here who's fluent in other languages (Klingon or whatever), let's show our appreciation!

Oh...here's pig Latin... Anks-thay!!
Keith - I have to agree with Carol Eberhard - I go out of my way to avoid watching FOX news - you seem to be spending entirely too much time talking about Fox lately - and then last night you made it the #1 story - what's up??
Carol, Long Valley, NJ (Sent Tuesday, November 13, 2007 12:35 AM)  I've been asking for this for months; maybe they'll do it closer to the election (??).
Sharon Ayers, Las Vegas, NV (Sent Monday, November 12, 2007 9:35 PM)

Thank you for sharing that video, one that really supports the troops.
I am a day late but I wanted to thank all of the veterans for their courage and their service.  In thinking back to how the vietnam vets were treated by the anti war group, I can't help but feel shame that a fellow American actually treated our soldiers in that manner.  Vietnam vets are owed an apology from America for what the morally bankrupt anti war protesters did to them on their return home.

I also feel shame that someone recently has defaced the war memorial in Washington DC.  Anti War protesters have the right to peacefully protest and assemble, but they have NO RIGHT to vandalize what I describe as hollowed ground.  These are treasonous acts against our country, in my mind

No, President Bush does not hate the troops.  He went to a ceremony of 4 fallen soldiers in Texas, with VP Cheney at Arlington.  Should he have been at Arlington, I would say yes, Does he hate the troops, absolutely not.  KO over the top with his Bush hatred.
HM, in an ivory tower somewhere (Sent Monday, November 12, 2007 9:45 PM)  The information in your post just sunk it (my caffeine is beginning to kick in). Wow...nice that he could fit in a visit with our brave soldiers in between political crony fund-raising gigs. Keith, did you cover this aspect of the story last night? If you didn't, this may be a good update!
Pam Bignardi –

Thanks for the apology, and you have mine, too, if I did anything to offend you.  Let’s be friends again, and move on.  I know you weren’t Biff.  Not your style.  If you need Angmar for anything, let me know.  I have one of those gazing balls, and I know how to reach him.  He’s got your back, Pam.  And so do I.
pud. All the 'wars' you mentioned were the US against one other country, hardly an International War with the rest of the World involved.  All were calculated in the interest of the US. Canada was against the Brits who were trying to enslave us, Twice, but hardly International in scope. The Spanish-American War was a land grab, pure and simple, and partly orchestrated by William Randolph Hearst. The Boxer Rebellion was brought about by the Chinese resisting European Occupation. We played very small part (See '55 Days at Peking' or 'The Sand Pebbles'). And Mexico was an incursion into that country at the behest of the French and Germans who wanted to divvy the place up. Pancho only crossed the Border to get even with a few Gringos, (mainly crooked US Army guys) who had ripped him off in a Blackmarket Swindle for Guns and Ammo. At least that is the version I heard from a Mexican Professor. I'd say, your History Lessons were ignored when they were given out, but you did learn how to twist a few words in your English Only Class.

Welcome to the blog,

You've kind of gotten KO's audience confused.  We're the college educated, well-read, intelligent audience, who are uncomfortable watching Fox.  It's the Fox audience who constitutes "the less informed elements of society" -- no one else would believe their swill.

Have a good day, sir.
I feel so much better now. Updated threads, getting back to blogging. News Hole..THANK YOU so very much..gracias con toda sinceridad. I was going to say it in French, but I'll leave that to Steve.

I was going to ease my criticisms of El Presidente, but after the report that he was a no show to the tomb of the unknown soldier, I decided a few words were in order. This man is beyond clueless. No compassion, respect, common sense, brainless, spoiled..just to name a few. Wasn't the reason originally reported he wasn't there, by Darth Vader I think, was that he didn't want Sr. Dictator interrupting his vacation? Than it's because he was just "too busy" elsewhere..and he accuses Congress of not caring for our troops..disgusting.
It seems that the Clinton campaign wants to consistently hide from her true record and sneak into the White House without having to deal with any substance.  We have so far

1) The non release of her WH records.  If she using her experience in the WH as a prerequisite, then why can't the American people see her body of work while first lady.

2) Planted questions at news conferences.  All of this is intended on making her look good.

3) Now the campaign is warning Wolf Blitzer not to "pile on" at the debate and not pull a "Russert".  Another words, don't ask any tough questions.

4) Blame her poor performance in the prior debate on "the swiftboating" of her candidacy by fellow candidates.

I have to ask my democrat friends, doesn't all of this concern you.  If she ends up being the nominee how can you come to grips with that, other than to have party loyalty.

If I was Obama or the other candidates, I would be continuing to pounce on "the front runner", to provide the American public with all of the necessary information to make an informed decision.
Estimated 1500-3000 homeless Iraq vets.  At least 150,000 homeless Vietnam vets.  We all say we support the troops.  We are liars.  How about making recruiters tell the truth?  You will go to war, you may not have the proper equipment.  You will see things that will scar you for life, you may even be blown to bits.  If you do make it home, our government will do all it can to make sure the american people don't have to pay for your health care.  We will make it so hard for you to recieve benefits, you are sure to just give up trying to get them.  No free rides in america, even if you give your body and sanity in defense of the rest of us.  We won't understand what you went through, we won't even think about it very hard.  After all there is shopping to be done and didn't you sign up for this.  When we see you on the side of the road with a cardboard sign we will roll up our window, homeless people are scary and we are afraid of everything, and drive away.  The Dole-Shalala report had 27 suggestions to improve healthcare to vets.  The president has the power to enact 23 of them with out congress he has done nothing, of course.  Congress had increased VA funding and funding for expanded PTSD care in the schip bill, the president vetoed it.  We may glorify our troops, but we sure as hell don't support them.
This story is full of the potential of gifts that keep on giving. If memory serves, this bill that GWB socked his veto pen to includes money for veterans. His "teenager with a credit card" comment nearly made me spew my Diet Coke. Who's been like "a teenager with a credit card" in Iraq spending but can't help sick kids because it costs too much??! Ggggrrrr....

Immortal Cougar (Sent Monday, November 12, 2007 10:06 PM)

"Weapon of Prayer" was originally written and recorded by the Louvin Brothers in 1951. It's actually connected with the Korean War, not WWII.
HM, in an ivory tower somewhere (Sent Tuesday, November 13, 2007 12:09 AM)

HM, bless you and your ivory tower too!  I've been a fan of classic country from the cradle (had to be in our household) but I'm not fully familiar with the Louvin Bros. discography.  Another friend (okay, it was Aunt Ornery) sent me a link to a site--http://www.bluegrassnet.com/tgbs/W/Weapon of Prayer.html--for the lyrics, but the recording from which they were taken was by The Country Gentleman.

Anyway, thank you, thanks Aunt Ornery, and thanks to The Newshole for kindly putting up the original post.
Your viewers might be interested to know how often and under what circumstances a president has missed the wreath laying ceremony on Veteran's Day. I share Mr. Olbermann's outrage at the behavior of our Vacationer-in-Chief. HELLUVA SHOW BRUCE.
Bet I know who Olbermann will put as the Worst Person in the World tonight, and my take on it.

Glenn Beck.

Last Thursday, Beck had a rather informative show on the crime which is spilling over the Border with Mexico. Americans Citizens being kidnapped and held for ransom or killed. Mexican Army escorting drug runners and illegal immigrents. Night Clubs on our side of the Border being assulted, and the local press recieving death threats all along the Border with Mexico.

Now the Mayor of Laredo Texas wants Glenn Beck to appologize for having Sheriff Flores of Laredo, and others witnesses from Laredo on to complain about how little the Federal Government is doing to secure the Border, and protect the citizens of Laredo.

Glenn Beck call the Mayor during his show today to ask what he got wrong on about what's going on down there. The Mayor got into a name-calling hissy fit rather then engage the dangers facing the people of his city from the Drug Lords crossing the Border.

And for that, I'd guess that Keith Olbermann would call Glenn Beck "The Worst Person in the World".

But I could be wrong on that, but it wouldn't surprise me a bit.
If Craig Crawford sat through 5 hours of political speeches on Saturday night, he doesn't need college credit; he needs and deserves a medal or at least a hearty handshake, a pat on the back, and the warm glow of victory.

OH NO, UPDATE CONCERNS AGAIN. UPDATE FOR O J
Keith you did an excellent superb piece on the Veterans,in your usual gifted style.
But the piece on Hillary and her planting a question was so biased.
Okay so you are supporting Hillary. She gets passes by you. But there area lot of us liberal Democrats (and we are women too),who don't support her. Mr.Crawford should have had the clas to show Obama's speech. For those of you who haven't seen it,find it,it was incredible.
I have yet to decide whom I am voting for but it won't be the controlled, I am entittled to it,keep things as they are, never answer a question honestly, robotic centralized Hillary.
Very good show last night Keith, thank you for pointing out, yet again, what a hypocrite Excederin headache # 43 truly is.  Keep up the good work.  How disappointing to have 5 deferment "I had other priorities" dick fill in as a substitute.  It's just a theory but maybe what happened is when Rush Limpblob bought his ticket to see Animal House, and when Babs sez, "A wimp and a blimp", he thought to himself, "How does she know I'm sitting here?", he panicked and ran out of the theater before he could hear Dean Wormer explain in no uncertain terms that, "fat drunk (drugged) and stupid is no way to go through life son".  Actually I may take Bluto's advice and start drinking heavily till this reign of Excederin headache # 43 is over.  This is kinda cool,

If Hillary gets elected you will have a field day for the next few years on this blog. I lean towards being Independent and frankly any and all the current candidates (Dem and Republican) scare the hell out of me. Perhaps it is best just to go with someone who will be honest in a self-defeating way as Kucinich who admitted he saw a UFO. Ask that of Hillary and she would waffle some how and say if she did the incident is part of Bill's memoirs and that it is up to him to release such information. Ask that of Rudy and he would say it was really something sent over by the terrorist, so elect me because I can protect you from terrorists and aliens.

Body language is the 'new' Fox News thing. Bill-o uses it and so does Hannity. Since they often can't get people they are critical of on their show, they will show video tape and have some dissect that 'they're really thinking'...

Is Dog Chapman really racist? Is Hillary Clinton really a socialist?

We can't answer that with evidence, so we'll theorize. I hope those schucks who are their experts are happy about the price of their souls.

Question: What would happen to the price of Oil if we went to Nuclear Power, and we used Nuclear Power to produce Fuel Cells for cars?

My guess would be that if a consumer as large as we are swiched to Nuclear and Fuel Cells Technology, Oil prices would free fall.
Immortal Cougar, oh you are in for such a treat!  The Louvin Brothers are fantastic!  You're probably already hip to the Everly Bro's and Gram Parsons, but you will readily see...or excuse me, "hear" the influence.  Interesting guys, I think Charlie is still alive, but Ira was killed in a car crash in the mid sixties, he was also shot by his wife once!  One of 'em, I can't remember anymore, supposedly physically attacked Elvis back stage in the 50's for ruinin' country music!  Anyway, enjoy......
jen hit the nail on the head. After using the American Soldier as a prop for all this time, Dubya now stiffs them out of a piteous amount of money that will go to his Trillion Dollar No-Bid Contractor buddies. You know what $900 bucks a month means to a homeless Vet? A little apartment and enough food to fight off malnutrition. But Dubya doesn't think they deserve it. Some of them will give up and kill themselves. And Dubya won't even buy them a bullet. Dubya didn't go to the Memorial because now he can't look them in the eye. Maybe he thinks one of them would say something mean, as he and Cheney like to do. The homeless ones are past that Dubya. They internalize the pain, and some are past even that. Some are barely hanging on. And as I type this, one of them is looking for a quiet place and one last sunset. And hoping that the one person who really loved him, will understand.

Wow.  I suppose that could be it, but if so it might be the negative consequence of good intentions.  It might mean, for example, that your name alone has credibility, and you get a “pass” when it appears, and it might also be the consequence of improved moderation – the faster the whippersnapper has to work, the more possibility for error.  Just a thought, for whatever it's worth.

I confess this whole thing is a mystery.  I like puzzles, but this one seems to be pretty much unsolvable.  Anyway, I gave up trying a long time ago in favor of playing mind games.  More fun than sudoku, for sure.
Kevin in NJ- Our vetrans deserve a lot more than an apology.  They deserve health care both physical and mental.  They deserve a country of grateful citizens who understand the sacrifice they and thier families have gone through.  A country that believes using them unneccesarily in a war is treason and holds accountable those who would needlessly send our soldiers to war.  A country that thinks thier lives are more important than monuments.  They don't get that and your "outrage" at the defacing of a monument by a few, only adds yet another red herring that distracts from the utter neglect of our soldiers.  You can hate the antiwar movement all you want.  You can point out all sorts of protests that are not palitable to your senses.  No one ever died because of paint on a monument.  bush sends soldiers to die for......I'm still waiting for a reason.  I find  priorities baffeling.

VERY interesting.  Suggests automatonomatic moderation, at least some times.  Although I still don’t think it's automatic every time.  I suppose this confirms Pam’s theory.  I was hoping against it, but I already knew that some posts without e-mail addresses get through (for me it explains some recent double posting).  I’m hoping it could be the other theories I put in my follow-up e-mail to Pam.  Otherwise, I DO have a problem with that, especially right now.  It’s never happened to me before, to my knowledge.

I would imagine that a lot of the voting population is still undecided.  I would like to imagine that Countdown would and could be a tad more objective in it's coverage of all the candidates.

How about interviewing, on separate nights, each of the willing candidates during the #1 story -- all of them -- even the Republicans, if they choose to accept.  It would be far superior to twits, bimbos or Faux News soft core porn events.

Could you consider it?
Carol, Long Valley, NJ (Sent Tuesday, November 13, 2007 12:35 AM)

Great idea.
Interesting about how Olbeman chose to honor the troops on Veterans day.  1) Critisize Pesident Bush for how he spent the day .. actually meeting with families of veterans who lost their lives., and 2) Critisizing Fox News in its approach on the topic of Family Values. 3) Talking about Tom Cruise... enough said.  4) Hillary planting questions in her audience.  Keith it's easy to see you're reputation is well deserved.
Immortal Cougar (Sent Tuesday, November 13, 2007 12:24 PM) Absolutely! Funny you should mention Custer to me; I've been to the Battle of Little Bighorn field so many times I can't count. For some reason I still haven't figured out, it's one of my Dad's favorite places to visit whenever we're out west. I find it a little depressing myself. It never fails that it's one of the hottest days of the summer whenever I've been there, too (114 degrees one year!!).
Bill Rochester NY 1:23pm post.  Ya know at first I was really disappointed with Excederin headache # 43 passing off what he should have been doing to ol' deferment dick, but after a little reflection I'm glad Excederin headache # 43 couldn't be bothered.  The president "honoring" soldiers who have paid the ultimute price for our freedoms and then seeing these same rights being denied to other veterans with a differing view is just too despicable!  If Excederin headache # 43 and 5 deferment dick really wanted to honor our troops, they would both resign today, go to the nearest VA hospital and dress the wounds and care for our vets every single day for the rest of their lives.  The sad part is, even if you could force these two to do just that, they still wouldn't understand the sacrifice these heroes have made.
