Countdown Tuesday: War Chest Pains

Posted: Tuesday, November 13, 2007 8:59 PM by Countdown
Filed Under:

My Way Or The Highway:  Judith Regan, the high-profile book publisher and editor, suing Rupert Murdoch's News-Corp, and claiming one of NewsCorp's executives wanted her to lie about her affair with Bernard Kerik, to federal investigators who were vetting Kerik, in order to protect the presidential aspirations of Kerik's benefactor, Rudy Giuliani. An allegation that News-Corp tried to suborn perjury to benefit Giuliani... and that there is evidence to prove that. There are few details... but we'll bring you more of them, and some reaction, in a moment. But in our fifth story on the Countdown: Regan is seeking a hundred million dollars in damages from the Murdoch empire... That is a sneeze compared to the startling revelation tonight about what the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are really costing this nation. The new estimate -- the low estimate -- begins at one and a half trillion dollars. Yet despite that, in Indiana this morning, President Bush had the gall to demand an additional 200-Billion for the conflicts from Democrats in Congress... after criticizing them for wasteful spending.

Mukasey at the Bat: In his third day on the job, the new Attorney General startles his critics and probably the President...Enabling the resumption of the stalled Justice Department investigation into who broke what laws when the Administration illegaly wiretapped Americans.

ODDBALL: The greatest oddball of all time....this isn't.  But, when a guy marries a dog and monkey spit coffee hits the market...who else has the GUTS to cover it?

Falafel Guy Fatwa: Mark Cuban -- owner of basketball's Dallas Mavericks, internet billionaire, movie financier, and television network owner -- "might have been incarcerated" by a different American president... at least, that's the latest eruption from Mount Saint O'Reilly, in the No-Sin Zone. Our Third story on the Countdown: is Billo implying Cuban should be locked up for backing Brian DePalma's film "Redacted" -- or is he implying it because Cuban had the nerve to criticize O'Reilly? Mark Cuban gives us his reaction, and his dramatic challenge to Billo, presently. And we'll give you a little explanation, courtesy another Countdown translation of O'Reilly's cocktail courage and dinner table heroism.

Cuban Strikes Back:  Mark Cuban's challenge to Bill O'Reilly. This coming after Billo's latest wild charge that because he financed the Brian DePalma film "Redacted," Cuban is "anti-American" and "might have (been) incarcerated" by President Roosevelt during World War 2. In a moment, we'll explore this O'Reilly fetish -- that he can get people thrown in jail if he just yells loudly enough, based on some sort of historical precedent involving FDR.

WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD: Congressman Thad McCotter, Brent Bozell, and Keith Olbermann makes an appearance on the list for something you bloggers helped alert us to.  You don't want to miss this one.

The Paris Connection:  Paris Hilton might have been on a roll. Just days after a scientific study showing that a cardboard cutout of her image reduces pain in male mice... There appeared, on Yahoo News, and on 289 different Google News sources, even on MSN.com... The report that she was taking up the cause of... drunken elephants in India. Though it broke our hearts to be so cynical, it seemed too good to be true. In our number one story on the Countdown: indeed, it was. The Associated Press tonight killed the story, after Hilton's publicist told us it was absolutely false. So the drunken elephants -- if they ever do make it into rehab -- won't have Ms. Hilton to thank for it.

Anomaly

just to be clear, I never said "cougar" was a derogatory term. Quite the contrary, actually.
Mark, AZ (11:59 PM Post):

It says Mark that there are 1,988,500 viewers watching O'Reilly hoping they can be eyewitnesses to the common sense credibility police come in and haul O'Reilly off the the show; 600,484 male viewers wanting new HD televisions that their wives won't let them buy so they are planning to throw something at the old set while O'Reilly is on as an excuse to buy a new TV; 30,000 viewers who can't find anything else on at that time so humorous so they tune in to get a good laugh; and 16 viewers who for some reason (God knows why) think O'Reilly has anything worth while to say. So that makes it 788,000 legitimate serious viewers for Countdown and 0 legitimate serious legitimate viewers for O'Reilly.
Dear Keith and the Countdown staff,

When you point out Billo's foibles to your Countdown audience, you are preaching to the choir.  If you could just confine mentioning "Billo" only during WPITW, even if just as an honorable mention, it would be MORE than enough.  I don't watch or listen to 'Billo', Hannity or Limbaugh because they promote fear, bigotry and xenophobia.

Please, please, please, we're begging you here, please let Access Hollywood cover the cesspool that is the Hollywood bimbo squad.  NO ONE OF ABOVE AVERAGE INTELLIGENCE CARES -- PERIOD.  We get it, they are morally bankrupt, under the influence and minus a few too many brain cells.  The real victims are their children and your audience.

In case you haven't noticed, it's your special comments that generate tons of extra posts on your blogs -- editorials like that are what your fans really appreciate.

Thank you, a loyal fan and blogger.
"for something you bloggers helped alert us to"

-- those who have been crowing that we are stupid to expect anyone at Countdown to read the comments can commence to eat such
Nothing new about News Corp, the Clinton's have been leaning on people to cover their asses for years. As a matter of fact, certain people have turn up dead . Being a friend of Bill is not necessarilly a good thing. keep up the good work Keith, I see more and more News Holers becoming disgusted with you every day. Can your ratings get any lower , obviously YES.
Have you stopped supplying rush transcripts of "Countdown" on this site?  Those transcripts are a vital service for those of us who cannot get home in time to see the show and who rely on "Countdown" as our only source of televised news.  Please bring them back.
It looks as if Mukasey might have been afraid to say out loud what he intended to do when he took office.

It's a good start, opening the wire tapping investigation again.  The DOJ needs some of Krista's "purification and sterilization" rituals, and a good stiff broom to clean up the mess that Gonzo and his cronies left behind.  He also might need a stack of 'pink slips' to get rid of the "ideologically pure", but woefully unqualified hacks that have gotten in.

I wish him luck, and if he succeeds then we all need to apologize to "Chuck" and "Diane" -- obviously they both knew a secret and how to keep it.
Mr. Olbermann, On the Newsvine Blog there is a wonderful post, "Aren't Americans capable of getting mad?" in his post he mentions the movie Network and the scen where the news anchor finally loses it and tells viewers to go to their wondows right that moment and open the window and shourt, "I am mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore." I think you should be the anchor that brings this back home.  Let's start a movement. NOW. Banners, signs, bumper stickers, etc. WE ARE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!!
"Mukasey at the Bat: In his third day on the job, the new Attorney General startles his critics and probably the President"

---------------Wouldn't it be a surprise to everybody if the new AG came out with new rulings and negative information of what this administration has done to get "around" getting "warrants" for their wire tapping?
Monday's Ratings:

What does that say?
Mark, AZ (Sent Tuesday, November 13, 2007 11:49 PM)

Proof that America's overall average IQ is in the toilet?
Memo to Mark in AZ: The ratings tell me that Bill has the 55 to death crowd locked up. Either that,or BillO has a lot of viewers who decide to laugh at everything that comes out of his mouth. Best sitcom that exists right now...and,unlike the rest of 'em,IT'S NOT ON STRIKE! (Although it's not funny on purpose.)
The paris hilton story/nonstory last night was insipid.  If you are going to start covering stories knowing they are not true then how about throwing a bone to your loyal bloggers.  I heard a story about George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matthew McConaghy are going to do a three way celebrity mud wreastling match to support orphaned baby sea otters effected by the San Francisco oil spill.  Lots of photos and video please.
Countdown more NEWS please.  While you were spending two whole segments on billo and one on paris, you failed to cover Turkey bombing Iraq, and Pakistan and the result of us putting all our eggs in one basket there.  Also it's irritating when you keep saying your going to have Mark Cuban on and you just read his e-mail to you.  If I wanted to know what your e-mails said, I would go work for the NSA.
Off topic but I cannot resist:  anyone who gets the chance please go over to washingtonpost.com and read Dana Milbank's priceless snarky commentary about Lyle Lovett and the Senate Judiciary Committee.  If that doesn't prove that EVERYBODY in Congress is out of touch with the rest of the world, I don't know what does.  KO, maybe you should have covered that instead of issuing a pointless challenge to the infamous Orally.  Would have been more fun.

And thank you very much, Anomaly, for that kind post.  Unfortunately down in FL the desperate sort of cougar has brought on habitat loss and bad press for the other sort.  As for me, that's my reality (I do so hope YOU aren't being snarky) and I'm stickin' to it.
So now countdown is defending a movie describing the fictional rape and murder of a teenage girl by US soldiers.  More evidence that the left is FOS when they claim to “support the troops”.  Given CA's and other's on this blog lack of outrage over this leads one to wonder about various claims they have made.  If this isn't spitting in our guys faces I don't know what is.
David Molinaro-  The same can be said about research and developement of renewable sources.  Solar and wind power don't produce high level nuclear waste as there end product.  I just don't see nuclear as our only option.  For some reason Solar and wind have been written off by a lot of people as crunchy enviromentalists fantasies and they are not.  They are real they are in use all over the world and I have no doubt that if we wanted to as a country we could come up with cheap clean renewable energy for us and the rest of the world.  Also if we were to switch to nuclear tommorrow we would need 10,000 new nuclear power plants and they are not going to put one in my back yard.  Again currently there is no place to store there waste, Yucca Moutain which was toted as the answer to this problem is never going to open and even if it did it could only hold a portion of the waste we already have stored in cooling ponds all over the country.  Nuclear waste from power plants can be used to make dirty bombs it is also only one processing step away from being used in nuclear bombs.  We should be getting rid of the stuff not making more of it and leaving it around for some lunatic to find.

That there is no foreseeable shortage of stupid, gullible people in the US? See Idiocracy, or a couple of Judge Judy's.

Also joining the "give Billo coverage a rest" chorus, though. He's a blithering demagogue, we get it. Move on please.
Krista, Tuesday 9:36pm: Thank you for your excellent post. I now don't have to write something similar. You said it so perfectly. All I can add is another Please, please Keith give us a break from "He who shall not be named" for a couple of days.
You are so much better than him Keith.
1.5 to 2 trillion dollars poured into the sand that is Iraq.

That money would have extended the fiscal health of Social Security and Medicare well beyond the life expentancy of the baby boomers and into the next century, and once the 'pig in the python' had passed, it could have been solvent forever.

The party of "life" choose "war and death" over the well being of all Americans.  Way to go Bush/Cheney.
what will the GOP say about the attempted bribe of a witness to minimize impact on Emperor Rudies campaign?  Pfff.  they'll deflect it as a scandal created by dems and other liberals.  As far as spending goes, GWB has kept support for this war (the whole %25 of it) by not taxing to pay for it.  he loses that, the rest of the supporter will follow.  With that group, patriotism is only defined by how little pain and profit it costs them.
If any of you NewsHolers are NPR listeners, too, Terri Gross is interviewing Brian DePalma about REDACTED today on her show. She always does a great interview, so this should be good.

Algore: We Have Ten Years Left Before Earth Cooks

That leave 8yrs, 76days until we're all dead.

David Molinero (Sent Tuesday, November 13, 2007 3:45 PM)

George W. Bush: "We found the weapons of mass destruction."

George W. Bush: "We not going to have any casualties"

George W. Bush: "We're going to get [Bin Laden] Dead or alive, it doesn't matter to me."

Four years, seven months, twenty six days have passed, and no weapons of mass destruction have been found.

Six year, two months, four days have passed and Osama bin Ladin has not been found.

Three thousand eight hundred sixty three United states soldiers have died in Iraq at the time of this writing.

And last but not least.

George W. Bush: "A political candidate who jumps to conclusions without knowing the facts is not a person you want as your commander in chief."

WOAH SNAP.
I do have to applaud "Liberal Democrat"'s message, although I was a staunch Republican until 2004.  Taking care of our own doesn't require a liberal Democrat; it just requires a person of decency, compassion, and common sense, something seriously lacking in the Republican party for some time.  There are many of us who had no choice but to leave the party after the profligate spending and complete lawlessness of the George Bush regime.  However, the mean-spiritedness of the current Republican party is intolerable.  I can no longer support it.
Mark, AZ (Sent Tuesday, November 13, 2007 11:49 PM)

It might explain why this blog is updated rather infrequently – they can’t afford a full time moderator.  One has to wonder just how much more time Mr. Olbermann has left.
Keith shows a clip of Mark Cuban thanking O'Reilly for the attention resulting in greater interest (and most likely greater success) of his movie, yet Keith can't seem to understand that O'Reilly is thanking Keith for the very same thing. I just can't see Keith and MSNBC being so ignorant about this. There has to be something else behind this O'Reilly attention and criticism. Anyone have a clue what that may be? ashing.

From today’s New York Times’ Op-Ed page --

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/14/opinion/14wed2.html?_r=1&ref=opinion&oref=slogin

“Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte is scheduled to meet General Musharraf in Islamabad later this week. We hope his message will be unambiguous. General Musharraf must lift martial law, reinstate constitutional processes, release political detainees, unfetter the media, give up his army post and accept whatever ruling the Supreme Court makes on his eligibility to be president. He must set a firm date for elections in January and facilitate everything — an election commission, voter registration, media access, international monitors — to make those polls as free and fair as possible.”

Good idea!  Or else …

“Otherwise, the United States, which has provided Pakistan with more than $10 billion since Sept. 11, 2001, should condition some of that assistance on Islamabad’s performance in fighting extremists and reconsider aid not directly linked to counterterrorism, like support for the F-16s that Washington let Pakistan buy. It should also shift money toward political parties, schools and courts to help the Pakistani people build a democracy.”

Frankly, with all due respect to The Times, this seems like an idle threat to me.  I could just be dreaming it, but “democracy” may not be EXACTLY what General Musharraf is aiming for right now.

I’m just glad Mr. Bush and Ms. Rice have this problem under control.
1 1/2 trillion $$$'s???

to give an idea as to how big a number that is, say convert that to seconds:

if you went back in time 1 1/2 trillion seconds that would land you at 47,563 BC!!
Goes against my first Composition Program Director's advice not to grade papers if you're drunk, high, or feverish, even if the students seem to have been when they wrote the papers. HM, in an ivory tower somewhere (Sent Wednesday, November 14, 2007 12:19 AM)

I used to grade papers, too, and I quickly came to believe that the ONLY way to do it was drunk, high, etc.  It was at that point it occurred to me that switching careers might be a good idea.

Come to find out, different career, same strategy.  The more things change the more they stay the same.
Hi everyone!  To Krista regarding your post of 9:36.  Yes, yes!  To Keith O.  I love countdown, especially the first half hour, but please stop with the Billo junk and with the celeb trash.  Please give us hard news or at least a 'special comment' in place of that.  There is no shortage of real news out there and your special comments are the very BEST!
Uh--guys, the moderation was amazing the past couple of days, but today you're backslidin' as we say in the South.  Don't want to bitch (if a cat can bitch) but you're skipping around again.  Get a grip!
I posted this yesterday but the blog updates went the way of the wind, so, I'll try again.  As I look at the news from Pakistan, I find myself wondering if Mr. Bush is watching with an eye toward learning.  I wonder if this is what we in the U.S.A. are looking at within the year.  I would not put it past the current administration to try something similar and Senators Reid, Feinstien and Liberman would defend it!  Is any one else worried?
Just for kick's I just checked the ratings(Inside Cable News)for last night's(Monday)show.Billo's show is a little over 2.6 million viewers and Countdown has 780,000 viewers. I think you should quit worrying about O'Reilly cause whatever your doing isn't helping your number's and start thinking about that show that's on CNN.There not to far behind.

Doggit, if you have so many problems with "Countdown" aside from your obvious inability to spell and punctuate correctly("kick's"; "your"; "number's"; "there"), why do you even bother watching it?

Sorry that "no child left behind thing" apparently didn't work out for you.

Hi Krista--good to meet another Mike Rowe fan.  Gotta mention though that I put up a later submission suggesting that y'all go check out Dana Milbank's latest column at washingtonpost.com.  It's about the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings regarding radio royalties for singers and it is HILARIOUS!  Either the Whippersnapper is cherry-picking again or I came a cropper when I suggested that the #3 on the countdown could have been devoted to that instead of another rant on the Great Big Talking Head.  I am about commode-huggin' sick of that guy.  KO's made him into an unending knock knock joke--HE NEVER GOES AWAY!  An-NOY-ing!
Sue, West Allis, Wisconsin (Sent Wednesday, November 14, 2007 1:34 AM) I know he has fun; it's obvious. And, I love for any of that ilk to "get their come-upance," but 2 segments' worth seemed overkill to me.
