Obama the Slacker

Posted: Tuesday, November 20, 2007 1:07 PM by Countdown

Barack Obama gave a little glimpse into his life as a school age under achiever as he took questions at a Manchester, New Hampshire High School. When asked what his high school/college experience was like, he responded:

"I will confess to you that I was kind of a good off in high school as my mom reminded me. I went to high school in Hawaii, so there's a lot of opportunity to goof off because the weather is really good all the time. I did well in school but I didn't really apply myself. I did what I needed to, to get into college and it came fairly easily to me, but I never worked as hard as I should have. I was big on bball, I was a bball player, we were state champs. I thought I was better than I was. But I just loved the game and I played bball a lot. I thought about girls a lot. " you know I I made some bad decisions….You know, got into drinking and experimenting with drugs, there was a whole stretch of time whee I didn't apply myself. It wasn't until I got out of college - er, got out of high school, and went to college that I started realizing man I wasted a lot of time. “

He then goes on to outline how he found his calling in life, and did a 180 in college. This from the guy who is trying to separate himself generationally from Sen. Clinton and who was courting the folks on the Google Campus last week. Is Obama's candor about 'goofing off' in his youth another attemp to make inroads with younger voters? We're sure a lot of bios of the people he's trying to reach read about the same.

The full Obama text after the jump.

Question:

Give us a human side, when you went to high school what was your favorite subject, what subject did you struggle in, what clubs and rogs (??) did you belong to, did you do sports and what did you do when you were hanging out with your buddies?

Answer:

I will confess to you that I was kind of a good off in high school as my mom reminded me.

When I started college I started noticing, why some places poor others rich, why is it that we spend all this money on our military but we don't spend it on our schools, why is it that women aren't always treated the same as men…a lot of questions that started bbbling up in my mind. I realized if I had spent a little more time reading, and studying that I could actually have some influence in the world, so I did a lot of catching up when I got to college. By the time I was a Junior and Senior, in college I got real serious in fact I was so serious my mother told me to lighten up. Fortunatly over time I got a little blance.

The 'Hippie' kids in the audience probably wondered if he grew his own 'Drugs', while the "Neocon' kids wondered if he 'Doctor Shopped'.
Amazing, candor from a politician, what will they think of next.

Kudos to Senator Obama for being honest, maybe we can put Matt Drudge and Novak out of business.
Keith Keith Keith we all know you are supporting Hillary, this is beneath you and one of the reasons Obama took a page out of the Clinton War Room Policy and attacked back over the weekend. It didn't matter if from Clinotn camp or Novak and right wing, the attacks to bring him down have started. He set up a web site for fact checking on him.I receive so many fake emails about him every day.Snopes.com is being kept very very busy to keep the record straight.

And You Keith have you lived a pristine private life above cheap gossip?

Kudos to Obama for putting it out there, espcially his last paragraph.
Obama should just go away.  The country isn't gonna vote a black as President right now.  That is just reality.  Maybe in a hundred years and will most likely be a Republican.
Barry?  "We go play hoop?"  "LATERS?"

Wow.
Honesty, how refreshing!! Thank you Senator Obama!!

PEACE!!

Let me get this straight CA, since you don’t own the land on which you reside, it would be ok for an American Indian (or anyone else I guess) to reside on it and do with it what they please?

Scott:

If I thought I owned the land Scott as you do I suppose that when either of us passes beyond this life we could stuff our land in a bag and take it with us to our graves. No Scott, I do not own the land on which I reside. I am its temporary caregiver, and that is what the Native Americans believe. Their thoughts and beliefs are on a higher level of sprituality then yours Scott. Whereas your thoughts whether on this issue or others are filled with terms like control, ownership, agression and survival of the fitess, the Native American's thoughts are filled with terms of adjustment, harmony, compromise and  mutual respect. They know that one cannot own the land but are only given an opportunity to be a temporary caregiver of that land. Do you have even the slightest bit of spirituality in you somewhere Scott? You sound so black & white, so materialistic and so intolerant with little sympathy for the belief of others. I was just wondering.

There wasn't a one-fingered typist working on this, was there?  (:

No matter.  Much ado about nothing.

There is measure in everything, and so dance out the answer.
I think they wanted to get the "goofing off" aka drug use out in the open due to hints that the Clinton campaign may use some of this against him.
This is a really mild news story compared to the what Scott Mclellen said in his soon to be released book.
His honesty puts a whole new light on Obama's character. A regular kid..ha, who knew?
Steve (1:49 PM Post): Too funny Steve and most likely true; and Krista (1:50 PM Post): I do agree with the honesty being refreshing.

This by Obama, contrasts with the patent Neocon description of youth. "Pious reverence for all things Norman Rockwell, avoidance of Halloween, burning Beatle records, continuous upgrading of 'Enemy Lists', Bow-tie collecting, planting evidence on innocent third graders, and the practice of 'White Lying' for the Common Good." A Village couldn't raise someone like that, but Thought Police could.
MISSING COMMENTS, AGAIN!!
If you read his first book, "Dreams of my Father" you would know all this and even more about Barack Obama.
Whether he is your choice for president or not, his honesty and compassion is very refreshing. We would do well with more leaders like him.
SLACKERS OF THE WORLD UNITE!! I was going to mention the numerous typos above, but I'll follow Anomaly's lead of "Much Ado About Nothing" - one of only 3 plays from "the Bard" that I can tolerate.

Maybe I'd trust Senator Clinton more if she'd had a childhood like Senator Obama.
I'm back and an update is required.

Why?

I celebrate the fact that for the second time in history, a Black Man is running for President, and for the First time, both a Woman and an Hispanic.

Mark, AZ (Sent Tuesday, November 20, 2007 1:54 PM)

It is you who should just go away Mark, and I don't think if you came back in a hundred years you would be one bit different.  Your bigotry and prejudice is so ingrained within you I don't believe God himself could save you. You're most disrespectful, and just as full of yourself as George W. Bush himself.

I sincerely hope you come to this blog after next November's election, as the way is appears right now, either Senator Clinton, a woman; or Senator Obama, a black man, will be the next president!!  My belief, you’re a coward and will never show your name here again!!

Pick up a book and read, your ignorance is glaring!! Perhaps a lifetime membership to Los Angeles’ “Museum of Tolerance” might be a good place to rid yourself OF yourself!!

PEACE BE WITH YOU – YOU NEED IT!!
By the way, when are you going to tell the Vonnegut story? Thanx Anomaly, I'm atingle with anticipation also.  Rocky Mountain Guy, Colorado (Sent Tuesday, November 20, 2007 2:21 PM) I don’t exactly remember saying THAT, Rocky, but now that you mention it …
Anomaly (always anticipating; tingling optional) (Sent Tuesday, November 20, 2007 2:31 PM)

Steve -- I think you need to know you've got some people waiting on you out here, tingling with anticipation.

WOW!! I agree with you for maybe the first time!! KUDOS for standing up to Mark and stating what you did!!

PEACE!!
Mark AZ- I'm happy to say my "reality" is much differant than yours. I think the democrates could nominate a dog and it would beat any of the current republican crop.
C A, Tuscaloosa, AL (Sent Tuesday, November 20, 2007 2:30 PM) I think Carol may have said what you attributed to me. Isn't an honest politician an oxymoron? ;D
Seriously this whole blog is rediculous.  Why even reply to racist comments like certain people who say completely anti HUMAN things like "a black"...  Are you kiddin' me...  Seriously, we should all think globally and act locally.

This blog that most of you waste your time on doesn't change a thing.  On top of that, it is poorly maintained, and pathetically guidelined.

Come on guys, get over it!!!

I used to come on here every couple days on my breaks to get a good laugh at you yahoos, but now I'm just bummed that you guys have so much time to right so eloquently about what you believe in, but you do nothing but write.

I think KO speaks well, and he has similiar views as I do, but when was the last time he made any sort of comment on his page with you guys... never.  So get over it, go talk to other people in the real world...  It's actually alot more fulfilling.

Peace up, A town

Anomally,I love the comment; I got it speaks volumes:-)

Kudos Kudos to Obama.Change the title, from "Slacker" to "Honest".

I also heard Obama annouce he was setting up a fact check web site on himself as Kelly reported above.
Oh Hillary Hillary, if only you had lived a life like this in high school. No you were a Goldwater girl.

What a nice refreshing insight into Obama's past.
Ali (Sent Tuesday, November 20, 2007 3:32 PM)

Dear Ali,

While thank you for your response Ali; however, I take exception with your statement that "we do nothing but write."

I tell you what, you don't come here anymore and we won't bother you, ok?? We ENJOY discussing issues with one another; venting, as many here have family and loved ones in the military; etc.  If you don't like what we write, you don't come back and allow us to bore you!!

Ironically, you took up six paragraphs to say what could have been said in two sentences: "Pot meet kettle, kettle meet pot (Ali)”!!

CIAO!!
jen,il (Sent Tuesday, November 20, 2007 3:15 PM)

You nailed it friend!! (Except for Barney, never would get elected - LOL!!)

PEACE & Happy Thanksgiving!!
Krista (3:28 PM Post): One can only hope that an honest person before becoming a politican can remain an honest person after becoming a politician. The chances are very slim based on history, but like I said, one can only hope. If that hope is realized one day then the next slim possibility has to to be wished for. That the American people will be willing to elect someone who is honest. For such honesty will not please all the people all the time. An honest person will not be able to priortize the wishes and desires of everyone, but will hopefully prioritize those issues and projects that are based on a sincere belief in compassion for all people.
Honesty and truth are sooooooo refreshing.  Too bad there isn't more of it.  Oh, that's right, Repugnikants have beaten truth and honesty to death, then replaced them with lies, spin and talking points.  Americans now expect only bumper sticker slogans.

Here's to hoping American expectations of their leaders rise and that honesty and truth become more valued than slogans.
Before I forget and time flies by, I want to wish everyone here, everyone, a most wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving. Realizing that some bloggers might consider this holiday one that is offensive to their people as it reflects the beginning of many atrocities and ill treatment towards the same, I only hope that one day all of us can regain the respect   and harmony that your people had for and with this great land, your home land. Dog says peace, leave the squirrals alone, and don't forget to save some of that thanksgiving meal for your pets.
C A 4:05 PM..same to you C A and dog too..HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Profiles in Courage. It's one of the biggest lessons in politics.  Be true to who you are no matter what.
Thanks, C.A. and to you and Dog also.

A truly beautiful post C A!! I believe our country had one very honest president, who also demonstrated both while in office and after leaving office, his compassion for ALL people.  That wonderful man being former President Jimmy Carter, God Bless him!!

Also, to you and all of my friends here, especially by "blogger buddies" who bring me so much joy daily, I wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving!!

PEACE TO ALL!!
Forget this story, Kieth.

TPM Muckraker has a much more interesting one:

Just in time for the holidays, there's a special place in Hell just waiting to be filled by some as-yet-unknown Pentagon bureaucrat. Apparently, thousands of wounded soldiers who served in Iraq are being asked to return part of their enlistment bonuses -- because their injuries prevented them from completing their tours. From Pittsburg's KDKA:

<<One of them is Jordan Fox, a young soldier from the South Hills.

<<He finds solace in the hundreds of boxes he loads onto a truck in Carnegie. In each box is a care package that will be sent to a man or woman serving in Iraq. It was in his name Operation Pittsburgh Pride was started.

<<Fox was seriously injured when a roadside bomb blew up his vehicle. He was knocked unconscious. His back was injured and lost all vision in his right eye.

<<A few months later Fox was sent home. His injuries prohibited him from fulfilling three months of his commitment. A few days ago, he received a letter from the military demanding nearly $3,000 of his signing bonus back.

<<"I tried to do my best and serve my country. I was unfortunately hurt in the process. Now they're telling me they want their money back," he explained.>>

Perversely, President Bush phoned Fox's mother to ask after Fox in May. Now his administration is taking money out of the pockets of wounded veterans like him.
No place else to post it yet.
Just Reported By MSNBC-
Excerpt from Scott McClellan's Book.
"I had unknowingly passed along false information. And five of the highest-ranking officials in the administration were involved in my doing so: Rove, Libby, the vice president, the president's chief of staff and the president himself."

NBC News
updated 2:24 p.m. MT, Tues., May. 29, 2007
WASHINGTON - An unclassified summary of outed CIA officer Valerie Plame's employment history at the spy agency, disclosed for the first time today in a court filing by Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald, indicates that Plame was "covert" when her name became public in July 2003.

Intelligence Identities Protection Act Prohibits knowingly revealing the identity of a Covert CIA agent.

If they didn't know she was covert, why did they feel the need to lie.
New evidence suggests a reactivation of the Grand Jury to subpoena the 5 high administration officials mentioned and Scott McClellan to determine if a Federal crime and or Treason was committed.
If that is found to be the case than impeachment of Cheney and then Bush should follow in short order.
This blog that most of you waste your time on doesn't change a thing.  On top of that, it is poorly maintained, and pathetically guidelined. … I'm just bummed that you guys have so much time to right so eloquently about what you believe in, but you do nothing but write. Ali (Sent Tuesday, November 20, 2007 3:32 PM)

Ali – I don’t think we’ve met before.  I’m sorry you feel the way you do about this blog.  I’ve visited other blogs, too, and I happen to like this one best for a lot of reasons, including in part how loosely it is guidelined.  I think that allows for a lot more interesting and creative contributions. If nothing else, this blog has "changed" all of us a little bit, I'm sure.

I’m sure that, like me, many of the folks here have responsible day jobs and families and make many other contributions to society besides “writing.”
Besides, “writing” is a substantial contribution all by itself if it affects someone else’s consciousness.  Social and political consciousness is what brings us together here, after all.

We’ve had recent evidence that Mr. Olbermann does, indeed, pay attention to these blogs.  At least once in the past week, Mr. Olbermann expressly acknowledged that bloggers had brought an error to his attention.  I’d be very surprised if he didn’t take what is said here pretty seriously, even if he doesn’t personally participate.

You ought to try it. It sounds like you would have good ideas to contribute, and you might just have a little fun. Who knows?  It was nice to meet you, in any event.
American Citizen, Anywhere, USA 4:4l PM..So true and written by one of the greatest presidents we ever had John F. Kennedy.
Didn't Excederin headache # 43 say he promised to fire anyone involved in leaking national security information?  So he'll be resigning the minute after he demands and receives a letter of resignation from Darth Vader?  I never thought I'd say this but "thank you" Scott McClellan.
Gary -  Yet another White House lackey who lies while in office then tells the truth for money from book sellers.  It's the walk of shame for all these evil people.  When is there going to be accountability for these actions???
C A, Tuscaloosa, AL (Sent Tuesday, November 20, 2007 3:56 PM) From your post to [insert deity of your choice]'s ears...your thoughts actually are very reminicent of a thread I began in the other place where I "blog." It's called Civil Discourse, and the thread I started (and am proud to say has a very active and spirited discussion) is called "We Are Two Nations." It's in the "Public Affairs" forum. Check it out! The whole premise involves how this nation became so polarized, what it will do to heal the divides, and what kind of candidates should be running to achieve this end.
Tom Betz, Sleepy Hollow NY (Sent Tuesday, November 20, 2007 5:13 PM)

Unbelievable! Just when I think this administration has reached a new low of depravity, they find a way to go even lower. Is this what "Supporting the troops" means? I expect to see new bumper car ribbons: Support Our Troops (void if injured or seriously maimed)

When is this country going to say ENOUGH? Enough of the lip service about "Winning" in Iraq. There is nothing to win. Our brave men and women are holding pieces of ground, while various factions of 'warlords/tribal leaders' are bidding for the most amount of American cash; their reward 'joining' our side and not attacking our soldiers.

Absolutely shameful that this fiasco continues so that GWB can try to salvage a 'legacy.' Shame on the deluded portion of Americans, who still support our military being fed to the meat grinder that is Iraq. History will show you to be the fools that you are. I guarantee history will not hold GWB in a kind light either.
Even after yet another former White House employee writes his tell-all book, the trolls on this site will ignore the evidence and continue to defend Bush/Cheney.

Yeah, they got to save a few pesos in taxes, but Bush/Cheney has run up a huge debt, to the tune of over $20,000 per American Family.  I'd laugh at the trolls, but the debt is in my name as well.

Way to go Republicans, because you tried to fund the war on the cheap, our grand children will be paying this massive debt off for decades to come.
Tom Betz, Sleepy Hollow NY (Sent Tuesday, November 20, 2007 5:13 PM)

Bush/Cheney are so busy trying to transfer all the wealth of the nation to their rich buddies, they are even willing to rip off veterans.  That's despicable

Support the troops, my A$$.
The hell with all of this other blog blog listen to this one and think about what is being said A vote for the clintons would be a vote for the republican party. have you guy's been listening to the rhetoric about hillary and her being the best democratic canidate for the job. Now this is republicans endorsing her and what about Bill and his friendship with #1 after the election, what happened to that, got to close to election time, bye-bye #1, hello Hillary!! they are in the bed together ,talking about insiders in washington this is a classic case. Now please do not take me wrong about what I am saying I could be wrong but my gut tells me I am not
