Countdown Thursday: Sex on the City

Posted: Thursday, November 29, 2007 8:59 PM by Countdown
Filed Under:

Rudy Cheating on Your Dime?:   In a radio ad the Rudolph Giuliani campaign started running last month in Iowa the former Mayor of New York says, quote: "I have no question I can do the same thing for Washington that I did for New York City."  In our fifth story on the Countdown, if he's talking about what he did for the residents of New York City, that would mean, President Giuliani could be expected to bill obscure federal agencies for security expenses incurred on weekend getaways with a mistress ... maybe even provide a secret service driver and car for his latest paramour. If he means he can do the same thing for Washington that he did for Judith Nathan specifically... well, you know where I'm going with that. Your tax dollars in action.

John Edwards Live: Attacked by name in the Republican debate by Willard "Mitt" Romney... Senator John Edwards' stock among Democrats, and certainly his sense of pride, must have moved ever so slightly... He'll join us from the Presidential campaign trail in Iowa.

ODDBALL: Robots and holiday hairdos galore...this rules!

Disaster Capitalism: The U-S and Iraq this week announced a broad framework for long-term relations between the two nations... the Associated Press reporting this involves a sustained U-S presence in Iraq... and preferential treatment to American investments. You know -- a treaty, only don't call it that, and nobody in the Senate gets the chance to not ratify it. Or to ask: why would Iraq give up a prize like that... preference to American investments... in return for a military presence the U-S supposedly needs for its own security, anyway? In our third story tonight, a new book says the answer may lie... in Chile.

Tabby Time: Our number two story tonight, Keeping Tabs, beginning with celebrities armed with buckshot in Texas.  Someone besides Dick Cheney. What you're about to see is a standoff near Lubbock last month between Texas Tech Basketball coach Bob "Don't Call Me Bobby" Knight -- for nearly five decades the leading American distributor of temper tantrums -- and a neighbor named James Simpson who confronted Knight and a hunting companion about shooting doves too close to his home.  The video, courtesy of the Dallas Morning News, is fuzzy but then again, so is Knight's sophistry.

WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD: Billo, Pat Robertson and John Mccain vie for tonight's top honors.

Paris of the Jungle: There are those who must face the elephant in the room...And then there are those who must confront the story that they are helping the drunken elephants in the room. That's what Paris Hilton recently did... after having redd the news that concerned her the most...News about... Paris Hilton. But in our number one story on the Countdown, even that far exceeds the reading list of Britney Spears, evidently... who raced wildly through a Barnes and Noble... so she could get a cup of coffee.

#4 -- John Edwards -- Since when did candidates have to apologize for taking public financing?  Just watching that made me ashamed, but not for Senator Edwards.  Good for him.
New thread, no updates for three hours? Great.
All feels just a little more right with the world, at least in my world – here comes Coach Knight! Coming from Indiana, the basketball capital of the universe where Bob Knight is still only one step below the Good Lord Himself (and above the Good Lord to some!), news of his latest shenanigans makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Well, at least he wasn’t choking a ball player, or throwing a chair, or beating on Central American cops…ahh…the memories… [insert “classic” Streisand tune here].

OK, time to serious-up now...I guess maybe we should start asking “America’s Mayor” about his little black book in addition to his client list! And, I LOVED it when Jonathan Alter said in the Republican party lack of money is a “character flaw”. Those of limited means need not vote Republican.

It doesn't sound like I missed much when I missed the YouTube debate last night.

And, finally, OMG…Rummy and the Dictator-Wanna-Be taking econ/country building ideas from Pinochet?! Nice. I learned a lot from the great interview with the author (her names escapes me now - sorry!), but I had to fight the urge to have a technicolor revisit of my dinner.

With that lovely image, sweet dreams everyone! Hopefully, we'll have "Oddball Plays of the Month" to look forward to tomorrow night!
#1. "Hi..I'm..like..well..d'ya got Hegel's Dialectics?" #2. If James had called him Bobby Monty, that being appropos in Texas, everything would've been OK. At least from a Texans' Standpoint. #3. It doesn't matter if the answer is in your Uncle Louis's Outhouse. When Dubya goes, so does all his bogus setups. #4. Mitt revealed his Sith Lord side. He hates any man who doesn't die his hair Jet Black, meaning I guess, he only likes Elvis Impersonators. #5. Maybe we could get Rudy to just use hookers like all the other Politicians in Washington. It would be a whole lot cheaper.

Good job, Bushie Boy in your effort to be the one-man show controlling Iraq past your term.  Which comes first the Bush Admin. ends or the world does?
Why can't your entire show be like the #3 segment from tonight? That was brilliant: a powerful does of history, an intelligent host (Klein), and a very informative conversation.

Loyal viewers, can you imagine an entire hour like that? No more Billo, Britney, Paris, etc.

Write letters and emails. Call the show. Demand change. There is so much potential here.
lead story not on webvideo AGAIN today - but paris hilton is -- AGAIN. what is going on???
He might look and talk like a friendly guy (remember the have a beer with George W standard?), but he's a scary, scary guy.  Sue, West Allis, Wisconsin (Sent Thursday, November 29, 2007 3:40 PM)

Sue -- You’re absolutely right.  This guy looks fair and feels foul, as Tolkien might say.  I find it interesting that no one is reporting on the lengthy death penalty answer he gave before Anderson Cooper forced him to answer the question, and he then gave that flip answer -- “Jesus didn’t have to run for public office.”  The look in his eyes as he gave the original answer made my blood run cold.  That’s all I needed to see.

I can tell you where the Political Center is in this country.

1) Secure the Border first, Enforce Employment Laws, then we can talk about what to do with the Illegal Aliens still here.

2) Do a better job in Iraq, or come home.

3) Both political parties are full of Crooks, Liars, Backstabbers, and creeps.

4) The News Media (papers, t.v., cable) gives an agenda everyday, not the News. And yes, that includes Keith Olbermann.

5) The Justice System is anything but Just being more concerned with the "Rights" of the Criminal, then the Rights of the people.

and

6) Washington is not the "Center of the Universe", despite what those in the Beltway think.

I know this, because my job has me run into different people every day, talking about different things all the time.
Which name sounds more evil?  Willard Mitt Romney or Barrack Hussein Obama?
Am I the only one who felt actual pain at the sight of La Spears doubletimin' through those gorgeous stacks of books?  I could die happy in a place like that.  I felt defiled.

By the way, KO, I hate to break it to you this way, but they don't sell your books in Wal-Mart.  Generally do Billo's and Coultergeist's.  Anybody feel like joining in a Wal-Mart boycott?  (Our famous local retail establishment is in such bad financial shape that the whole town might as well be boycotting it already, but just say the word and I'll picket it.)
Hey, I know the new one isn't officially out until Dec. 26.  But they didn't sell THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD (AND ANY NUMBER OF STRONG CONTENDERS--I'm numerically challenged) either.
Great show Keith!!

First, I have a correction to a post I made earlier; I stated “Senator Clinton has infinite more foreign policy experience than any candidate running.”  I meant to say, “Senator Clinton has infinite more experience than any REPUBLICAN candidate running.”  I apologize; as Governor Richardson has a great deal more foreign policy experience than Senator Clinton; in addition Senators Biden, Dodd and Representative Kucinich all have a great deal of foreign policy experience.  WHEW, now I feel better!!

Regarding the question posed to John Edwards concerning “are the republicans helping the democrats”, YES!! With the exception of Ron Paul, every time they open their mouth’s they help the democratic candidates!! Again, with the exception of Ron Paul, their answers to almost every question have a “Neanderthal” stamp all over them, i.e. religion, evolution and gay rights to name a few. Next, as John Edwards said, they come off as “George W. Bush on steroids” (great line), i.e. Iraq occupation, Guantanamo, Habeas Corpus – “I’m more of a neo con than George W. Bush; I can kick more ass, bully more countries and terrorize the world far superior than he can.”

Regarding Rudy vs. Mitt, they’re both pathetic!! Rudy, the thrice married, adulterer whose favorite past time is cross dressing so agrees with the neurotic, maladjusted, medieval mindset of the GOP righties!! Mitt, who thinks the Ronald Regan “do” is working in his life, can’t remember one sentence from the next; he changes his positions faster than I change the channel when George W. Bush invades my TV or radio!!

I just love this GOP line-up; this is the most pitiful group of candidates ever running for anything!!

PEACE!!
Why did John Edwards looks like a mannequin? He had a kind of a plastic-like, unreal look to him last night that seemed rather odd.

Was it the lighting? The Make-up? or the Webstream? But no one else looked that way.
News Hole, a question, do you do an update for those who don't live on the east coast and watch Keith later based on work and time?  It seems that updates are done after the first show is aired and many of us are still at work or driving home.

A suggestion, please do an update for the rest of us, thank you.
I'd like to be able to see the lead story (5th) video also.  Is this deliberate or does the webmaster think because it's "number 5" that it's least important?
Buenos Dias Everyone..

#5..my, my Rudy and Judith's pre-marital trysts certainly made for a very expensive f**k. Sorry to be so blunt, but when we foot the bill for these rendezvous, we can call it what we want.

Jonathan Alter saying the Republicans are a very "cranky" party because they are unhappy with their candidates, is too funny. Hey, we have some cranky Repubs blogging here!

#3..Naomi Klein was a great guest. Looks like her book would make a great read. Let me see if I get the premise of the book straight..Create chaos (Iraq invasion), or wait for a natural disaster. Once the populace is in "shock" (the Iraqis), go in as heroes and saviors (enter Bremmer and Co), say you'll protect, help rebuild. Make a deal, we'll protect (enter our military and Blackwater) we'll put your life back together..BUT you've got to give us your country so we can sell it piece by piece to our rich buddies (enter Hunt Oil) so we can make them richer. Is that about right? It's called, in a roundabout way, scamming and taking advantage of the vulnerable. BushCo has done a swell job..disgusting, really disgusting.

#1..I resent some of L.A.'s finest (LAPD) guarding Britney trash to a Starbucks. She can damn well hire her own security. Chief Bratton..sir, there's crime in the streets, officers are needed elsewhere. Get them off Britney trash detail..much appreciated.

and..Keith #2 on the Movers and Shakers list! Love it! Love it! Love it! my book order has been entered.
James, NYC, NY Thursday 9:51 PM..Why can't your entire show be about the #3 segment from tonight? That was brilliant: a powerful does of history, an intelligent host (Klein), and a very imformative conversation.

Loyal viewers, can you imagine an entire hour like that?

James,

I can imagine maybe 1/2 hour devoted to an outstanding author, but not the whole show. We still need the important news topics of the day..and I need my daily dose of WPitW. I definitely agree we can do without Britney and her ilk, but I'm afraid Keith isn't responsible for all the program content.

Did you liberals hear the breaking news this morning ? A special thanks to Brig. Gen Kerr for his suggestion and for "W" for compromising with the liberals. "W" has decided to ignore Hillary's don't ask don't tell policy for gays in the military. Gen. Kerr so many gays and lesbians want to serve, so a  presidential directive has issued , all gays and lesbians are now reqired to report to Paris Island Marine Corps Station for basic training to prepare to fight for their country , which they all so much want to do. I knew Hillary's dis of the gays and lesbians would come bank to haunt her.
Brig. Gen. Kerr has also asked Hillary to release her WHITE HOUSE papers relating to her decision on " DON"T ASK DON"T TELL" and how she came to that lame decision. I bet Al- Quaida is scared as hell now!
Anomaly (10:40 PM Post):

I'm certainly not expressing any suppport for any particular candidate at this time as I don't see in any of them all that this country needs in a leader  (Dem or Republican). But I think your are reading more into Huckabee's responses and positions (scary) then what is really there. I thought he gave a decent reply when asked about signing death penalities as Governor. He said it was the most difficult decision of his life as such a decision could not be corrected or reversed once carried out. I thought that was an appropriate answer. Regarding the question and response about what Jesus would do, who knows? No person comes close to being on a level with God in order to be able to answer such a question. His reply was not flippant but rather an acknowledgement he could not speak for Jesus and would not want to assume what Jesus would do regarding the death penalty. Perhaps an ordained Minister is not the right person for the Presidency. I suppose it would depend on their ability to separate when necessary Church from State when governing. But even past Presidents including Carter and Clinton and Kennedy and others had a deep faith that they called upon  when having to make difficult decisions. Did that make them scary as well? Huckabee had a decent interview with Chris Matthews last night where Matthews asked some good questions of Huckabee. Again, Huckabee gave some good responses and stated he clearly understood the dangers of a President who  felt he/she had some type of messianic mission in their role as President and any decisions that needed to be made. I may be wrong but I think you guys are reading more into Huckabees faith and his sprituality then what is there as it relates to an ability to govern. You may not agree with his positions but that is another thing altogether.

As you can see I am struggling with this a bit myself. Sure, I dont want this country run by a neo-con far right evangelical nut, but I also don't want this country run by a person who claims they have faith in something greater then themselves and spirituality when in fact they have none. And there are quite a few candidates on both sides (Dem and Republican) who claim to be spiritual but in fact don't have a spiritual bone in their body. Some even think there is no one or no thing greater then themselves. Hillary may fit that category and how is that for scary?
#5-the whole thing is just so bizarre to me.  The republicans were in an uproar when Bill Clinton lacked discretion in the White House for something that was private and did not affect the taxpayer dollars (until of course the special counsel and hearings and whatnot started), but here is a man who is...well immoral doesn't quite seem appropriate (not strong enough), and stole from taxpayers, blames it on other people saying that he didn't know about it (although let us remember what a "hands on mayor he was), and they are more than ok with that and don't bring it up.

Check this out...pretty interesting.  A quick read that is a nice reminder why this man must not become even a serious nominee.

Thursday night's number 1 story should have been pre-empted for medical reasons.  Combining Paris Hilton, IQ of 80 and Micheal Musto, Sleaze Quotient of 180 and you get nausea.  Stop contributing to the dumbing down of America.

Thank you Countdown for giving me back that seven minutes, I turned you off and started to watch my dvr copy of Jeopardy! instead.

If you have to discuss Hollywood entertainers, could you at least find some one who is worth listening to?  Rule #1 should be they have to be able to speak intelligently.  How about some of the striking writers?  or producers who are running out of shows?  Please, anyone but the clueless twits.
As democrats of old once said. "Who cares about sex in the White House." It now seems it does matter and our description of Bill Clinton is now proved to be correct. The impeachment is now taken as necessary. Thanks libs for verifying what history will always say, Bill Clinton is slime and an impeached discredited president. As if having body guards and stsae police contact your ladies for you, ask the master of sexual harassment about Paula Jones. Great story Keith , the parallels are incerdible.
#5 - The shag fund seems to be getting more attention from the media than the Qatar ties. Why am I not surprised?

#4 - I like the way Edwards handled the subject of Bill Clinton's remarks on Iraq. His consistency or lack thereof on the topic is not really an issue.

#3 - Sounds like an interesting read. Now I know what else to order with Truth and Consequences so I can get free shipping.

#2 - I know it's not exactly Rock-Paper-Scissors, but I'm pretty sure a gun beats a camera. I was at IU when Knight was kicked to the curb. I could say more, but it would devolve into a screed.
James, NYC, NY (Sent Thursday, November 29, 2007 9:51 PM)

I completely agree!  Even for the Keepin' Tabs segment-I would much rather hear about where former political and news personalities are now than sports figures and OJ Simpson.  I loathe the fact that Brittney and Paris are on Keith's show...it's going to start hurting his ratings rather than helping. I am sure I am not the only one here who turns the channel or fast forwards through those segments.

KEITH-Keep it all political!  Save pop news for Sunday Night Football, please:)
In a radio ad the Rudolph Giuliani campaign started running last month in Iowa the former Mayor of New York says, quote: "I have no question I can do the same thing for Washington that I did for New York City."

I'm more concerned about Rudy doiing to the entire country what he was doing to Judith Nathan during those weekend trysts. It seems like every day another layer comes off of Giuliani. I'm worried that beneath that exterior lurks a swamp monster far more hideous than Keith's alter ego on that episode of The Simpsons.

Really liked the John Edwards interview. My brother, who works for John Deere in Cedar Rapids, IA and is a union man, is a big Edwards fan and has seen him several times. He says Edwards comes across as a real friend to the working man and from what I've seen of last night's interview I'm very much in agreemwnt with him. Even if he doesn't get the nomination, Hillary or Obama need to take a close look at him as a potential running mate.

The interview with Naomi Klein, author of "The Shock Doctrine" was a real eye opener. Could our country's neocon leadership be so arrogant and avaricious as to think it could repeat the failed Pinochet experiment in Iraq? Could this explain the level of insurgency there? The concept of "disaster capitalism" is one of the most audacious things I've ever heard, and it doesn't surprise me one bit that folks like Rummy and Cheney are behind it.

And finally...let's put Dick Cheney and Bobby Knight together in the same field, each with shotguns loaded with birdshot. We could make a reality tv show out of this by adding some more like minded celebrities (like Ted Nugent), letting them eliminate each other in various "hunting accidents" and call it "Shooting with the A'Holes". If some program development guy from Fox is looking a this, just remember that I thought of it first and you have to pay me royalties!
One thing I tell my kids about politics, be honest and consistent with their views, and I will respect their views.

Regardless if they're Republican, Democrate, or something else. If they can be honest and consistent, I will not belittle their views.

If only our Politicos on both side could hold such standards.
It's kinda amusing to me that the Republicians will accept the shanigans of Rudy running around on his wife and threw Bill Clinton under a bus for the same thing.  The last election, at least in my neck of the woods, was all about bringing credibility to the White House.  Even the churches were on board with asking their members to vote for GWB.   Where did all that "Hollier than thou" sentiment go?
Kudos to Edwards for doing a live interview as he always does. If anyone read Howard Kurtz's book (who was on Countdown last month)"Reality TV", knows that Hillary when annoucing her candidacy would only do the three major networks on tape. ABC said no way. She was forced to do it live and without control of the questions.Even on Countdown a month ago,she was taped. Keith did get her on the Gore question though.

I still miss my John Grisham lawyer in Edwards from 2004. It was a nice interview; nice being the operative word. But it needed to be much longer and  have more substance.

The lady talking about the shock system was excellent.I forgot her name and the transcripts are not up yet.She was brillant. She conveyed so much information in such a short amount of time. She was very very informative. We could use more guests like her.

SIGH:more eye candy for the guys with two non stories on Brittany and Paris. As long as you guys  in the media keep covering these people, the more they will seek out being in the news.  Wow earth shattering headlines Brittany calls TMZ to follow her through a book store to get a cup of coffee.  So what, do we have to watch it?

Double standard here, we ladies get accused of sexual harrasment in a very very friendly teasing way about what color eyes Keith has. Yet we get subjected every night to this degrading young girls with major Love Me Daddy issues.
This is so beneath the quality of the rest of the show. Enough on Brittany and Paris. I just do my Marge Simpson and fast forward through it.

I don't think anyone needs a reason why MSNBC's ratings are in the toilet, they are obvious.  With Matthews, Olbermann and Abrahms on the air with their Liberal bias, it simply doesn't resinate with the viewing audience.  I have a feeling some of those at MSNBC will soon be looking for work.
Mark, AZ (Sent Thursday, November 29, 2007 6:38 PM)

Mark, you're starting to sound like a broken record. MSNBC's rating are hardly "in the toilet". Yes, I realize Fox News draws more viewers but that's because people like comedy and enjoy watching train wrecks like Billo foaming at the mouth and wetting his pants over Christmas or moveon.org or the Daily Kos or whatever has got his panties in a bunch.

Judging from the comments here I'd say that MSNBC's "liberal bias" DOES resonate (note correct spelling there Marky) with it's audience.

You've been served Marky. Now go back to playing in the middle of the freeway and stop annoying the adults.

Hear! Hear! Thank you, James!!

At the sight of Musto's ugly face I switched over to Fox to see Orally "modedeling" his "no-spin hat" and stayed for Hanity & Combo-over.  What really amuses me about the republican "outrage" over some (the horror!!) democrat sneaking into the debate is the fortress mentality conservatives have created and attempt to maintain. As painful as the contrast is to contemplate, the conservative response to democrat's "perfidity" parallels their response to 9/11: their cozy  enclave was violated; only a cabal among the minions of satan could perpetrate such a crime; let us, in an orderly fashion, rush to the barricades to build them yet higher.

Bush & Co and the various water-carriers don't even venture out of the 29% club room any more; they invite some masochist from the center in so they can bludgeon the fool senseless, then congratulate themselves on how "fair and balanced" their coverage of the issues are.

Evil is ultimately banal. If something's banal, is it ultimately evil?
Off Topic, but what's with Joe Scarborough? On Morning Joe he called for us invading and taking over the government of Sudan because the British school teacher allowed her students to name a teddy bear Mohammed. The reason he's angry is because of the punishment they've imposed on her and wanted to originally give her..40 lashes. Since then, the Sudanese are calling for her execution. Now this is insane. All this for the name of a teddy bear which the name is sacred to them. Where are the mediators in all this? Where's the British government representatives? Who's in charge? Ol' Joe better be careful though about what he says. Bush may just be ready to invade another country besides Iran and he doesn't need any ideas from Joe.
Krista. What goes around comes around. Pinochet got his ideas from Nixon. Ask Allende's family about it. Nixon-Maoism at its' latest, most crudely crafted pinncacle.
What an unbelievable book Naomi Klein has written. I went to Amazon to read some of the reviews and there was something said that jumped out at me - this book is another example of the death of the American dream -

You know, it is said that our country is slowly waiting out the end to Bush’s second term.  Is that the best we can do? Wait it out? As Ms. Klein pointed out, and something the Iraqi civilians know full well, the USA is not working towards a democratic Iraq. Iraq in fact was invaded, raped and looted, by us.  Thousands dead. And that’s only part of the Bush Administration legacy.

Question: Why is Bush still in office? Why? Will someone answer this question.
News Hole, no update in 13 hours? Bad, very bad.
John Edwards and Naomi Klein on the same show! Nicely done Countdown. Geez you mean the people of NYC were stuck with the tab of Rudy's trysts. Talk about your Republican family values. There for everyone else's family not Rudy's, or Mitt's or John's or any of the Republican ELITE!
CA regarding my post on what I'd like to hear a candidate say about the Bible. None of the candidates will ever say that during a debate. I'd still like to see it however. People are entitled to believe what ever they like about the existence or non-existence of God. I am not required to share those beliefs nor am I required to respect those beliefs.
IMHO Marx was wrong. Religion is not the opiate of the masses it's the cyanide.

UPDATE, 14 HOURS, WE ARE COUNTING DOWN.
Good Afternoon, David Molinero

I know that you mean well, but you can stop posting the ratings from the previous night on this blog.  Because of the lack of availability on many cable systems, you are comparing apples and oranges.

MOST of the people who post here would rather have a root canal than watch Billo pontificate.

I for one would never watch "The Factor" even if it were on every channel simultaneously!  My digestive system couldn't take it.  I would turn the TV off and either read a book, surf the net, devote time to my hobbies, do housework or take a walk -- anything but watch Fox Noise.  There are plenty of people available to force the Right Wing's talking points down my throat with out me having to subject myself to the White House's shill.

Now, if we could just get Countdown to stop "dumbing down" the last 5-7 minutes, all would be better with my world.

Countdown or intelligent comment senders,

Although I am not too sophisticated on a computer, someone please tell me why I went from being able to read complete transcripts of Countdown's segments to only these partial crumbs.  I am seriously jonesing for my fix of the news by the only news agency that holds the administration's feet to the fire by telling the whole truth.
Bill, Rochester (12:17 PM Post):

I would totally agree with you that people are entitled to believe what they like about the existence or non-existence of God. And no, you are not required to share those beliefs. But I can't agree with your comment that we should not respect other's beliefs. If you believe in God I will respect your belief. If you do not believe in God I will respect your belief. You may be right that one is  not "required" to respect the belief of others but it would seem to me that the world would be a much more harmonious place if we did respect one another's beleifs, even when they are different from ours.

Let me add, regarding your response to Marx's comment about religion, IMHO there is a big difference between religion and spiritulity. So I might agree with your comment that religion is the cyanide of the masses. On the other hand I think spirituality is that which keeps man from falling into total chaos and destruction. A debate for another time I suppose.
