Countdown Monday: My Way or the Highway

Posted: Monday, December 03, 2007 9:03 PM by Countdown
Filed Under:

Redo or Die: In our fifth story on the Countdown: Imagine if President Bush kept giving the same speech again and again. His regular attacks on Congress for failing to rubber-stamp his agenda, strangely similar.
Rovisionist History: Karl Rove won't give an inch despite facing a torrent of criticism from his own former colleagues in the White House that he got his comments about the build-up to the war wrong.

ODDBALL:Kung-Fu Robots, Santas on the slopes, and more christmas trees.

No Campaign no Gain:  We are now one month away from the day when the first voters in the country will get a chance to vote for whom they want to be president. But if you thought each party's nominee was already inevitable, let alone each party's winner in the Iowa Caucuses January third, in our third story tonight, a new set of polls and the behavior of the candidates themselves is starting to suggest that everything is up for grabs.
Tabs: Miss Puerto Rico lies about the pepper spray? Paris and Britney still BFF, and Trouble the dog fleas New York.
A Gay old time: Perhaps Senator Larry Craig thought he had made a modest recovery after the fallout from his arrest in an airport restroom sex sting. He has, so far, held onto his Senate seat. And he has repeatedly denied all manner of gayness. But his possible hypocrisy has now led five more men to come forward, in our number one story on the Countdown. Those men detail encounters with Mr. Craig, two of the encounters leading to sex.

It is very difficult to take seriously any "reporting" organization that can't spell. "indighted"?

NewsHole ain't worth it any more (Sent Sunday, December 02, 2007 7:23 PM)

I got no respect for a man (or a woman) who can't spell a word five or six different ways.
Concerning Larry Craig, I don't care for high level gossip, nor if he's into men, women, or stuffed animals.

The only thing that really matters, is if the people of his state thinks that he represents them well. Anything else is foolishness as far as I'm conserned.
What is the matter with this site?  It's circular...Hello!
I guess the moderator thought my poem in honor of Mr. & Mrs. "America's Mayor" was too "smutty." Heck, I didn't think it was THAT bad; I can get much more smutty than that. Oh well...a lucky few got to see it, and they thought it was darn hilarious!

First, many thanks to David Schuster for pinch-hitting for Keith tonight; I hope he's OK and is just enjoying a day off.

I guess a theme for tonight could be "How can we miss you if you won't GO AWAY?" First, we have Turd Blossom - again! I think he's on TV more now NOT working for GW than he ever was working for him. That man should be arrested for sight pollution. Then, we have the "gentleman" Senator from Idaho. It sounds like airports are on his list of turn-ons. And, once again, give me the Rummy doll over the Senator Craig doll.
Greetings, Holers!

The Domoc-rats better hope that Obama will be their man next November. If he's not, millions of Obama-ites will just stay home out of disappointment and frustration. There goes a big part of the Democ-rat base. Result- victory to the Republicans.
In the words of Yogi Berra, GWB is deja vu' all over again in person. He really needs a new speech writer. And, far be it for anyone in this administration to LIE! I better make sure my breakfast is sufficiently settled before his "press conference" tomorrow morning. And, how dare those Iranians make GWB look like an idiot by not having "the bomb"! And, yes, it should be obvious by now that loyalty trumps all, this administration has no shame, no doubt, any quality that contributes to successful leadership.

Is Senator Graham up for re-election in 2008?

I'm SO GLAD Siegfried & Roy may be returning; man, I was losing sleep over that one. At least that long national nightmare is over.

I don't remember learning that the Garden of Eden was in Missouri in Sunday school!
Senator Clinton, you've wanted to run for president since you've been in college! Knock off the attacks on Senator Obama in that category! I really don't want her to get the nomination; if she does get it, I'm going to have to hold my nose to vote AGAIN! How much longer is it going to be before I vote FOR SOMEOME again?

NPR is broadcasting a Democratic debate from Iowa tomorrow afternoon at 2:00. Since it’s on NPR, it just might be an honest-to-goodness debate! We can only hope.

Everyone have a restful evening.

Don't count on that Pud; as black Americans LOVE former President Bill Clinton!! I have many friends that feel he was the first president (of their generation) who addressed the inequities in this country that sadly, still exist!! MOST, and the majority, would be very happy to cast a vote for Senator Clinton to get Bill Clinton back in the White House!!

I don't think you realize just how popular Bill Clinton is with black Americans, just like he is with me!! In addition, you are assuming democrats behave like the evangelical Christians, who again, have hi-jacked the Republican Party; we DON'T!! We are NOT shallow, we are not intolerant and we WILL vote!!

PEACE!!
The following is a post on another non-neo-con site:
********************************
Please remember Rove's favorite tactic...attack your enemy (and he sees a world only of friends and enemies) on his or her strength. Never admit weakness. Hence, the swift-boating of Kerry's war record among other things. So, his statement about the Democrats rushing to a war vote would be a piece of the same thing. Lie, and pretend your enemy did just the opposite of what they really did. Deny them their strength. Don't worry about the truth, reporters will report only the "he said/she said" aspect of the story. Never apologize, never explain.
David Molinero (Sent Monday, December 03, 2007 10:19 PM)

If the Republican Party platform didn't contain a homophobic, gay bashing plank, we wouldn't care either.

It's the hypocrisy, Dave.  If Senator Larry "I'm not gay" Craig were a Democrat, and came out the closet, like Barney Frank, then it would be no big deal.

However, after all the anti gay speeches and votes, Senator "wide-stance" deserves all the ridicule that's coming his way.

I sincerely doubt that he'll be re-elected for two reasons:
* his "fellow" Republicans are afraid to work with him -- fearing that his homosexuality may rub off.
* his constituents have been well indoctrinated to be anti-gay and won't vote for the sinner.

It's a helluva party that you've got there Dave, it's so exclusive, does it really let any one except straight white males in?

Hey backwater boy (no pejoratives here) -- Your post gives me an opportunity to try out Durwood T’s theory -- domoc-rats, democ-rats, dumoc-rats, dimoc-rats, damoc-rats.  Rats any way you look at it, especially if they just stay home.

There you are, Durwood T.  That’s 5. (:

Thanks for being a good sport and participating in this experiment, Pud.  Nice to see you again.  I hope you had a good holiday and you’re back to stay.  With scott henderson nv gone, we need you around here.
The "Mad Flare" case continues. Latest word is he will undergo a Psychiatric Evaluation. I wonder why he picked Hillary's Campaign Office. If she wins, maybe he will be asked to pick the winner in 2012. Or, if he picked her office because he held a grudge against her for something, I wonder who his choice for President would be. After the Shrinks/Pshryncs get done with him, I think it would be interesting if they gave Dubya the same Evaluation, and compare the two. What say you?

Steven Hadley of the NSC reportedly said today that the Iran NIE report proves that our sanctions have been effective............

The US sanctions have been so effective that not only they stopped the Iranian program. They actually made the sanctions work backwards all the way to 2003 ...... years before the sanctions were imposed.

These sanctions are obviously very effective tools of the NSC and should be studied by all interested in national security, foreign affairs and international diplomacy.

Maybe this sort of diplomacy could be used to go back and stop the Iraq war before it began in 2003 also.  That would solve our funding problems.
Buon giorno to all!  Ya know, I was all for Larry Craig staying in office if THAT is what the people of Idado deemed, however, this is getting a bit silly.  For the SAKE of the people of Idaho, he should just resign-why should THEY have to endure any investigations that might come forward?

Rove?  Nut case, though I'm sure there are those out there that will believe that the Democrats were the pushing and ultimate deciding force in going into war. God knows that if Rove says it and Limbaugh, Hannity and Coulter repeat it, those crazy neocon lemmings for Bush would believe that Harry Reid, Jack Murtha and Nancy Pelosi were the actual designers of said war.  Sigh!

Ciao!

I didn't care for the story on Larry Craig.  The doll and the comment by Dana Millbank was out of line.  I don't care if he is gay or not.  It seems to me the real story is the hipocrasy that exists. A lot of people went after Bill Clinton when what they were doing was just as bad.  I like your show but this one seemed way out of line.  I don't think you need to share Karl Rove's nickname with the public.  In additon, it seems that the comment on splaining was inappropriate.  Your show is at its best when you take on the big boys and the war in Iraq.  The real story is that U.S soldiers are dying in Iraq and this seems to be after thought by a lot of people.  I don't mind the light stuff but keep going after the big stories.
To David Molinero--Ordinarily, I would agree with you, that the only thing that matters is whether or not the people of his state are satisfied with his service, as long as he hasn't broken any laws.
But, here's the thing, see....I've said this at least twice before on this blog, and I can't name any names or my submission won't be posted, but for a politician to be gay and in the closet, is incompatible with public service.  The reason for that is that it leaves that politician subject to blackmail.  This fate has already befallen one top tier Democratic candidate for president, but we will never hear about it.  I think everyone knows who I'm talking about.
Besides the obvious, why, really are so many Republicans bailing out?  Methinks I smell a RAT somewhere...
What sleezy, scheming plots and plunders, next?
I would that we could do a major RECALL of some/many Congress people, and of course the p.Resident and vp-senator, sort of sometimes, whenever he doesn't want to be held accountable...
Wow...no bombs with the "made in Iran" sticker on them?  Wait for it...GWB and his gang will undoubtedly CREATE another reason to make war on a muslim oil nation that is unfriendly to the Saudis.  Anyone want to start a betting pool on where that relationship ends up after his terms are done?
Something new I want to share, seems they are moving their monkeys around in the White House... These son of a you know what's just won't dissapear! Seems Rice is putting Wolfowitz in a different position, which means they have recooped and are about to embark on something else.  The think tank PNAC in which Wolfowitz is also a part of, must have been working hard thinking of what their next move will be?..

Well, Immortal Cougar, it looks like I was wrong about this new guy in Pakistan.  It seems that Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard Coeur de Lion have now joined forces to oppose Henry II.  This is setting up quite nicely for a little internecine war.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/04/world/asia/04pakistan.html?ref=world

“Benazir Bhuto and Nawaz Sharif, the two former prime ministers who have long bitterly opposed each other, joined with an opposition alliance on Monday to denounce what they see as an unfair environment leading up to parliamentary elections planned for January.  “… it may help the opposition to do well enough in the elections to cause Mr. Musharraf difficulties afterward if their cooperation continues.”

Now, this is exactly the sort of thing that my friend Angmar and his new boss (that guy hiding out in Northwest Pakistan) thrive on.  With a nuclear weapon as an inducement, you can bet Angmar’s new boss will be following this closely.  Talk about a meddlesome guy.

“… Ms. Bhutto also said that there was every sign that the president was already preparing to fix the elections on his behalf and that the opposition needed to combine forces to oppose him. ‘If elections are rigged, we are going to need to be in a position, like the people of Ukraine were, to protest those elections,’ she said, sitting beside Mr. Sharif and flanked by other opposition leaders at a news conference at her Islamabad home. ‘We really need to have a platform to which all the parties together can put the aspirations of the people for a democratic order.’”

But if Bhutto and Sharif are worried about fair elections, I suggest they pay close attention to the recent Russian model.  Who needs Angmar, after all?  Russia has Vlad the Impaler, right Steve?

#1. I really could do without the Larry Craig "action figure," and the moves as provided by David.

In re Hillary's attack on Barak's kindergarten record -- what the @#$% was that campaign thinking...?  What sacrificial volunteer/intern will be compelled to fall on his/her sword over this "unauthorized release" that they're calling a "joke" on the morning shows. Classic Clinton shoot-yourself-in-the-foot nonsense that will be forgiven by supporters, sort of, in a week or two but never really forgotten by anyone. Hillary needs to  shake the air of inevitability about her election to get beyond her core supporters, and that means losing Iowa and a few other low-number primaries. I don't think stupid attacks on Barak are the way to do it, however.

Thank you, Countdown, for pointing up just how repetitious is el presidente estupido's daily mantra against the "time wasting" congress. As KO said a while back, "Your hypocrisy is so vast, sir..." but I suspect that Bush, like so too many "conservatives," lacks the capacity to recognize their own hypocrisy.

And then there's Turd-blossom, who appears to be going thru media withdrawal and needs to get his face out there in a vain attempt to get the buzz back. How long before he's partying with Paris and Britney (or Larry Craig) and becomes a regular on Keeping Tabs?

Again I ask, if it's banal, is it evil?

When is Rachel M going to host the show... or get her own show? She's consistently incisive and articulate, and the old Countdown set probably hasn't been buried too deep in a joisey warehouse..
Great great show last night!  Thanks for filling in David! Wonderful job!

#5-thank you Harry for correcting the President.  The same speech that Mr. Bush continues to give is getting old.

#4-I sure am glad that the administration didn't just have a wild hunch that Iran already had a "WMD" and bombed them already.  Sure is interesting that they are actually paying attention to the intelligence reporting.  Something new for them.  I will feel safer on the whole issue when we have a President elected from the Democratic party.

It is one thing to criticize Congress and to say they are not performing their jobs and another to act as a leader and to lead this country including Congress in the right direction. Bush is not a leader. Yes, Congress has its duties and responsibilities and should act like adults and try and pass good legisltion, but the President has the responsibility to provide the kind of leadership that can inspire the American people and Congress. How on earth any President with an approval rating so low from the American people expects Congress to do his bidding is beyond me. Must be a mental or character flaw.
David Molinero: RE Larry Craig. Ah, David, therein lies the rub. If Larry Craig was openly gay I seriously doubt that he would have ever been elected to office in Idaho. The religious right has so demonized homosexuals that any position in politics would be unavailable. We now live in a zero tolerance society primarily created by politicians who essentially promise to protect people from everything. " Vote for me and I'll pass a law making it illegal for people play their tv too loud on Sunday." You can't micromanage human behavior. If you want pass a law every time some gasbag is offended by their neighbors inconsiderate
behavior you are going to be left with a society that is not worth living in. People used to generally talk out their problems. Now they go to court. If you are a society of laws, you better be very careful about what laws you pass. The Republicans have painted themselves into a philosphical corner which from which there is no escape. I personally will not vote for a politician who does one of several things. First, emphasize religion because of the thoughtless intolerance and bigotry most religions engender. Second, " Law and Order" candidates because they are pandering to fear and people generally don't make their best decisions when they are fearful. Third, singling out one group as a pariah that must be dealt with. I realize that I am a minority but I am content that this is a proper way to elect a representative and to conduct my life.
"...moderator must not appreciate fine art. or any art."
DTOldman, Coldsnap, NE (Sent Monday, December 03, 2007 10:42 PM) I guess not; it was even British, so it was high-brow smut! I guess I could go back to good 'ol American smut. I would imagine Lenny Bruce would have something appropriate to say about what "America's Mayor" has been up to. I'll have to check my "Lenny files."
David Molinero (10:19 PM Post):

I tend to agree with you David. I recall another person who was and has been slammed by the opposition for his sexual activties. His name is Bill Clinton. I could care less who he was screwing, even if in the oval office, as long as he represented the people well which it appears he did with the poll numbers he enjoyed when leaving office.

On the other hand regarding both Craig and Clinton or any other elected government official who particpates in similar activities. If you are Gay say so. If you like men say so. If you like young female interns say so. If you like both men and women say so. If you love your wife but feel the need to mess around now and again say so. The issue is not the sexual activities or preferences as much it is not being honest about your activities when and if they are made public. Dishonesty is a character flaw and does give the people of Idaho and the US some reason to consider just how well representation can be expected in a person who fails to be honest. Personally, I also have an issue with anyone who messes around on their spouse but it seems the general public is more forgiving today for such acts so I'll leave that criticism out of the equation. But my own thoughts are that if you cannot be faithful to your spouse then end the relationship and move on in another direction and allow your spouse to move on in another direction rather then trying to live a life of deceit.

The first Caucus/Primary hasn't happened yet!  Evaluate ALL the candidates and think wisely before you vote.
And we are counting down.
GWB is spinning the report that Iran doesn't have (and never has had) nuclear weapons! He says the report is a "warning." What a freakin' shock...
David Gregory just asked GWB a great question! Be sure to include it in tonight's COUNTDOWN!
Pud (10:45 PM Post):

Although I'm not sure I would put it exactly like you have I will agree that if the Dem base stays away from the polls the Dems are in trouble. However, the same could apply to the Republican base if they do not get a nominee that meets their agenda. They too are in a state of confusion among their candidates as to who will best represent their agenda. The confusion does not lie just on the Dem side but also on the Republican side. If we could just eliminate or at least down play the desires of the extremes on both sides perhaps we could end up with a responsible, mature and compromising leader. But as you say if the Dem base stays home it could lead to an outcome that appears to the be a Republican (in your words) victory. But as I see it if the wrong candidate is elected (whether Dem or Republican) rather then a victory for the Dems or the Republicans the result will be a defeat for the American people. For the serious division in this country that Bush and Company have created that has resulted in an  extreme dislike (even hatred) for the same by those on the extreme left will be maintained rather then substituted for a more workable and positive coalition between the American people.
If GWB botches "nuclear" one more time...
GWB doesn't want Congress to raise taxes when people may be losing their homes, but he's the first president to CUT TAXES DURING A TIME OF WAR. In the words of the Guiness beer guys, "Brilliant!"
Larry Craig is the gift that keeps on giving. This would have been a three day story if Craig had simply come out and said he was gay or bi or whatever.  Or if he had actually left the Senate when he said he was.  I can't wait to hear his next excuse, they seem to be getting more and more desparate and bazaar.  While it's true his behavior is only relevant to the people of Idaho, it is entertaining for all.
GWB has tried to be "respectful" to Democratic leadership and members of Congress??! Golly, I'd hate to hear what he sounds like when he's not "respectful!"
Concerning Larry Craig, I don't care for high level gossip, nor if he's into men, women, or stuffed animals.

The only thing that really matters, is if the people of his state thinks that he represents them well. Anything else is foolishness as far as I'm conserned.

You know, you're absolutely right.  It shouldn't matter what indiscretions our politicians do in their private lives.  Their sexual choices and preferences are between them, their spouses, and God.  If they serve their people well, it doesn't matter.

You know who also applies to what you've just said?  BILL CLINTON.  WOASNAP

I just sat through Dubya's press conference.  The usual self-serving whiny stuff.  He really got me with his ingenuous response to all questions about the revelation that Iran actually suspended its nuclear program four years ago; sort of like, well, yeah, they stopped THEN, but what's to stop them from starting it again yesterday?  And they probably did, if we are to believe the way all his people spin the news.

As for his scolding of Congress over the work he says they need to do, allegedly to take care of the troops but in fact to make him happy, not one word of his diatribe from yesterday's Rose Garden shindig did he change.  Dates me badly, I guess, but IS IT DUBYA OR IS IT MEMOREX?

No doubt this is too blatant an insult to be allowed up, but he reminds me of no one so much as an elderly spinster cousin of mine, oldest and only girl of a family of four, fond of bossing her brothers around:  she would frequently lament, "Everything would be so much better if they would just mind me when I tell them what to do!"  Sounds like she and Dubya had a lot in common; sadly, she now has Alzheimer's and can no longer boss anyone around, while he still has--how many days is it, Carol from NJ?--to try to boss Congress and the American people around.   Well, time flies when you're havin' fun--
U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton (Friend of Bush) is in deep Doo Doo, and the Conviction of Border Patrol Agents Ramos and Compean may get thrown out. (I hope, I hope)

I'm not a lawyer, nor do I play one on T.V., but isn't it a crime for a lawyer to knowingly allow a witness to lie on the stand? Suborn Perjury?

I hope Johnny Sutton's woes leads to Secured Borders and BOTH PARTIES in Washington getting serios over protecting Americans.
