Special Comment: Neocon Job

Full text of Keith's Special Comment after the jump.

Finally, as promised, a Special Comment about the President's cataclysmic deception about Iran.

---

There are few choices more terrifying than the one Mr.. Bush has left us with tonight.

We have either a president who is too dishonest to restrain himself from invoking World War Three about Iran at least six weeks after he had to have known that the analogy would be fantastic, irresponsible hyperbole -- or we have a president too transcendently stupid not to have asked -- at what now appears to have been a series of opportunities to do so -- whether the fairy tales he either created or was fed, were still even remotely plausible.

A pathological presidential liar, or an idiot-in-chief. It is the nightmare scenario of political science fiction: A critical juncture in our history and, contained in either answer, a president manifestly unfit to serve, and behind him in the vice presidency: an unapologetic war-monger who has long been seeing a world visible only to himself.

After Ms Perino's announcement from the White House late last night, the timeline is inescapable and clear.

In August the President was told by his hand-picked Major Domo of intelligence Mike McConnell, a flinty, high-strung-looking, worrying-warrior who will always see more clouds than silver linings, that what "everybody thought" about Iran might be, in essence, crap.

Yet on October 17th the President said of Iran and its president Ahmadinejad:

"I've told people that if you're interested in avoiding World War Three, it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing them from have the knowledge to make a nuclear weapon."

And as he said that, Mr.. Bush knew that at bare minimum there was a strong chance that his rhetoric was nothing more than words with which to scare the Iranians.

Or was it, Sir, to scare the Americans?

Does Iran not really fit into the equation here? Have you just scribbled it into the fill-in-the-blank on the same template you used, to scare us about Iraq?

In August, any commander-in-chief still able-minded or uncorrupted or both, Sir, would have invoked the quality the job most requires: mental flexibility.

A bright man, or an honest man, would have realized no later than the McConnell briefing that the only true danger about Iran was the damage that could be done by an unhinged, irrational Chicken Little of a president, shooting his mouth off, backed up by only his own hysteria and his own delusions of omniscience.

Not Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Mr. Bush.

The Chicken Little of presidents is the one, Sir, that you see in the mirror.

And the mind reels at the thought of a Vice President fully briefed on the revised Intel as long as two weeks ago -- briefed on the fact that Iran abandoned its pursuit of this imminent threat four years ago -- who never bothered to mention it to his boss.

It is nearly forgotten today, but throughout much of Ronald Reagan's presidency it was widely believed that he was little more than a front-man for some never-viewed, behind-the-scenes, string-puller.

Today, as evidenced by this latest remarkable, historic malfeasance, it is inescapable, that Dick Cheney is either this president's evil ventriloquist, or he thinks he is.

What servant of any of the 42 previous presidents could possibly withhold information of this urgency and gravity, and wind up back at his desk the next morning, instead of winding up before a Congressional investigation -- or a criminal one?

Mr. Bush -- if you can still hear us -- if you did not previously agree to this scenario in which Dick Cheney is the actual detective and you're Remington Steele -- you must disenthrall yourself: Mr. Cheney has usurped your constitutional powers, cut you out of the information loop, and led you down the path to an unprecedented presidency in which the facts are optional, the Intel is valued less than the hunch, and the assistant runs the store.

The problem is, Sir, your assistant is robbing you -- and your country -- blind.

Not merely in monetary terms, Mr.. Bush, but more importantly of the traditions and righteousness for which we have stood, at great risk, for centuries: Honesty, Law, Moral Force.

Mr.. Cheney has helped, Sir, to make your Administration into the kind our ancestors saw in the 1860's and 1870's and 1880's -- the ones that abandoned Reconstruction, and sent this country marching backwards into the pit of American Apartheid.

Grant, Hayes, Garfield, Arthur, Cleveland...

Presidents who will be remembered only in a blur of failure, Mr.. Bush.

Presidents who will be remembered only as functions of those who opposed them -- the opponents whom history proved right.

Grant, Hayes, Garfield, Arthur, Cleveland... Bush.

Would that we could let this President off the hook by seeing him only as marionette or moron.

But a study of the mutation of his language about Iran proves that though he may not be very good at it, he is, himself, still a manipulative, Machiavellian, snake-oil salesman.

The Bushian etymology was tracked by Dan Froomkin at the Washington Post's website.

It is staggering.

March 31st: "Iran is trying to develop a nuclear weapon..."

June 5th: Iran's "pursuit of nuclear weapons..."

June 19th: "consequences to the Iranian government if they continue to pursue a nuclear weapon..."

July 12th: "the same regime in Iran that is pursuing nuclear weapons..."

August 6th: "this is a government that has proclaimed its desire to build a nuclear weapon..."

Notice a pattern?

Trying to develop, build or pursue a nuclear weapon.

Then, sometime between August 6th and August 9th, those terms are suddenly swapped out, so subtly that only in retrospect can we see that somebody has warned the President, not only that he has gone out too far on the limb of terror -- but there may not even be a tree there...

McConnell, or someone, must have briefed him then.

August 9th: "They have expressed their desire to be able to enrich uranium, which we believe is a step toward having a nuclear weapons program..."

August 28th: "Iran's active pursuit of technology that could lead to nuclear weapons..."

October 4th: "you should not have the know-how on how to make a (nuclear) weapon..."

October 17th: "until they suspend and/or make it clear that they, that their statements aren't real, yeah, I believe they want to have the **capacity**, the **knowledge**, in order to make a nuclear weapon."

Before August 9th, it's: Trying to develop, build or pursue a nuclear weapon.

After August 9th, it's: Desire, pursuit, want...knowledge technology know-how to enrich uranium.

And we are to believe, Mr.. Bush, that the National Intelligence Estimate this week talks of the Iranians suspending their nuclear weapons program in 2003...

And you talked of the Iranians suspending their nuclear weapons program on October 17th...

And that's just a coincidence?

---

And we are to believe, Mr.. Bush, that nobody told you any of this until last week?

Your insistence that you were not briefed on the NIE until last week might be legally true -- something like "what the definition of is is -- but with the subject matter being not interns but the threat of nuclear war.

Legally, it might save you from some war crimes trial... but ethically, it is a lie.

It is indefensible.

You have been yelling threats into a phone for nearly four months, after the guy on the other end had already hung up.

You, Mr.. Bush, are a bald-faced liar.

--

And more over, you have just revealed that John Bolton, and Norman Podhoretz, and the Wall Street Journal Editorial board, are also bald-faced liars.

We are to believe that the Intel Community, or maybe the State Department, cooked the raw intelligence about Iran, falsely diminished the Iranian nuclear threat, to make you look bad?

And you proceeded to let them make you look bad?

---

You not only knew all of this about Iran, in early August...

But you also knew... it was... accurate.

And instead of sharing this good news with the people you have obviously forgotten you represent...

You merely fine-tuned your terrorizing of those people, to legally cover your own backside...

While you filled the factual gap with sadistic visions of -- as you phrased it on August 28th: a quote "nuclear holocaust" -- and, as you phrased it on October 17th, quote: "World War Three."

---

My comments, Mr. Bush, are often dismissed as simple repetitions of the phrase "George Bush has no business being president."

Well, guess what?

Tonight: hanged by your own words... convicted by your own deliberate lies...

You, sir, have no business... being president.

---

Good night, and good luck.

rock on bro. keep the momentum up.
I wonder how long Keith talks to himself in the mirror. Before he goes on the air. I here that his entire family is forced and tortured to hear his monolag every night in front of the TV unless they have a valid excuse validated by at least 7 resouces.
mr. olbermann, you told the masses what would otherwise be hidden under a rock, covered by a mountain. What must be said, what must be done to awaken Americans from their mouldering, vegetative state to say ENOUGH?
You hit it right on the head. KO.
The latest White House attempts at spin remind me alot of the 9/11 hearings. I seem to remember that Condoleeza Rice stating something to the effect that CIA warnings of elevated threats of terrorist activity against the US were not specific enough to be actionable---and therefore, it was not the administration's fault that they did nothing special after receiving the information prior to 9/11.

Now that we have clear information that the Bush administration has a propensity to push the U.S. into various wars in the middle east (even with false information), perhaps it is again ripe to look into the "why" behind the administration's reluctance to improve security measures prior to 9/11.

It is now clear that on more than one occasion the administration has attempted to fabricate "evidence" that the U.S. should be at war with either Iraq or Iran.

Is it that far fetched to imagine that the same administration deliberately failed to act prior to 9/11 in order to allow the "evidence" of a terrorist threat to truly emerge?
Keith, we love you....you're the only person on the news who tells it like it is....right up front and out there! You say what we think but aren't good enough with words to verbalize it as wellas you can. sometimes I fear that you are committing journalistic suicide when you attack Dubya the way you do....but thank you for having the courage to do it. We need you to keep doing what you do...and you do it so well!
We share your outrage; Bush is what he is, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Think of the damage he could do if he really worked at the job. Bush & Cheney had a middle east agenda before entering the White-corporate-club-House. May I recommend two books? 1)"The Greatest Story Ever Sold: The Decline & Fall of Truth in Bush's America," Frank Rich, Penquin Books (2006); and 2)"None Dare Call it Conspiracy," Gary Allen & Larry Abraham (1976) Reprinted, Buccaneer Books, NY.
The words "Iran" and "terrorists" were used in the same PR breaths back in 2003...check your film, you'll see...read one or both books...you'll see more and feel disgusted.
Our leaders layed down with dogs, now they're getting up with more than a few fleas. Truman warned Americans about "The Big Lie," as he spoke against McCarthy, and we all know what happened to Joe. Save your anger, Keith...Bush knows it all, and he doesn't care. A comment I read comes to mind - "9/11 changed everything, 'except' terrorism."
Thanks, Keith...we'll keep tuning in!
Keith Olbermann deserves the Presidential Medal of Freedom!  But wait until the next president is in office to receive it.
He is the most honest and best news source in America!!!
Knight him!
Keith Olberman is a very courageous person.  He makes me feel better knowing he will call it like it is.  I feel so powerless and don't understand why the rest of us just sit here and stand for Bush's lies.  Keep it coming, Keith!
Amazing, Keith!  You have done it again!  THank you for speaking on behalf of the majority of the country!  I applaud you!
In any other administration I would cringe at (and object to) the usage of such strong partisan bile.  Unfortunately it's exactly what needs to be directed towards this one.  Excellent comment.  May we all live to see 2009, and may the soldiers who die in Iraq next year forgive us for not doing enough to get them out.
I remember Edward R. Murrow and the service his commentaries did the country in exposing government duplicity and corruption and worse and I am so thankful that Mr. Olbermann embodies his unflinching candor and courage for our time.  That this country is crying out for his type of real patriotism is palpable when one sees and hears the apologetic and enabling bombast and irrational drivel emanating from the other networks and news outlets where hosts and listeners salve their consciences with blasphemous compliments about their being "great Americans."  No, they couldn't be more delusional or further from reality as they ape a president and vice-president who have lost all touch.  Mr. Olbermann, sir, you are a great American.  Take solace, if you need to, in knowing that the great risk you take in speaking out as you are, is in the great tradition of this country going back to our founding and in keeping with the true patriots who were not afraid to keep doing so even in the face of threats to life and liberty.  Please, for  all our sakes, keep it up.
Congratulations your "Special Report" re: the
President and Vice-President's blatant deceptions.
Thank you and keep it up.
You Go Guy!!!!!! You seem to be the only commentator that has a handle on this mess.  MSNBC is lucky to have you.  This is the only program that gives us the facts without sugar coating everything.  I am not the smartest person that blogs this site, but I know "rotten" when I smell it.  You clear it up for me.  Thank you, Keith.
once again youve said what  nobody else in the public media wants to or is able to say Great Work
masterful.
this fellow olbermann is the bravest american.
he knows the language and uses it in a powerful ,clear, concise way that strunk/white wrote in. their book
Bravo, with one historical exception. Grover Cleveland was, like all presidents, a sturdy instrument of capital against labor domestically, but he did do something no US president since has: opposed US overseas adventures, opposed the US overthrow of Hawai'i's Queen Lilioukalani and, out of office, opposed the Spanish-Am. war and America's imperial ambitions. Within the narrow limits of what we can expect from a president, he did stake out this one arena in which to be brave, and lost. Hawai'i never regained its sovereignty, and the US was on its way to its own brand of overseas military conquest and control. Cleveland's opponents in Congress and the press were racist annexationists; the cartoons of the day convict them. Bush would fit more comfortably in their company.

Thanks, Keith.
The only justice would be to see this crew of Bozos in jail. But that won't happen. It makes me tired.
Keith,
Way to go Keith. You are one of the few people that I watch on TV that tells it like it is when you refer to Bush & Cheney.  Keep up the good work.
NICE!! the best yet....
Again I applaud you sir, I applaud you. Your anger last night represents how most of us feel when it comes to this president, the vice president and the continuing stream of lies that come out of the White House.Enough is enough is enough.
One major point you missed was the vote on the Iranian National Guard as terrorists. It was also in August, another way to deflect away from there being no nuclear threat. Just a new tactic for these lying  scum to get us into a war. And again shame on all who in Congress who voted to pass this resolution.
Kudos to you Mr.Olbermann.I again applaud you sir.
Keith,
If George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and the like, you know, real American forefathers could be reincarnated in front of cable TV, they would be your most loyal viewers. Keep up the truth.
Hail to the Keith!!!
2nd attempt to post...

Bravo, Keith! Aren't the "internets" and videotape grand?

Yes, it has been proved once again and probably not for the last time, that this President (capitalized for the office - not the man) has lied to us or is, to be charitable about it, monumentaly stupid. Your "Special Comment" was staggering and clear. And, unfortunately, to choose my words equally as carefully as you did earlier tonight before the comment, there isn't a goddamned thing that will be done about it. Those who have the power and the authority and the CONSTITUTIONALLY SWORN OBLIGATION to do something about this will not. They on both sides of the political fence are more beholden to the special interests who got them into and keep them in office than they are to the integrity of the Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch, and to the constitional and political processes that keep this republic from turning into a monarchy or a dictatorship. Their own political backsides are held in higher regard than the constitutional health of our nation. Heaven, if there is one, help us all.

Your words about the roll of the puppet master, Cheney, were an unexpected bonus.

Thank you once again, Keith, for your passion and for your bravery to say what must be said.

For the rest of us, for all the good it will do, here is the link to contact your "representative" in Congress or the Congressional "leadership":

The fact that Keith Olbermann and MSNBC can sleep at night after publicly insulting, demonizing, and attacking our President in such a vicious rant is, in and of itself, very disturbing indeed.  Freedom of speech, dissent, disagreement among ourselves, as citizens, and as we are obligated to do, does not mean we can exercise those freedoms without harsh consequences when done so in such a vicious, despicable manner.  The malicious words drown out any message and only the malicious words remain in the mind.  If this is done for entertainment and ratings, should not a label be presented before the rant, such as for "cage fighting".  In this case, the consequences are one more mean spirited media ranting into the homes of people in our world (friend or foe)to be heard by our families and our children about our leaders.  One more nail in the coffin of civility.  Frankly, after all the viciousness our family has witnessed on these "news" channels about ANYONE who serves in our government, who in the world in their right mind would EVER consider being President, Vice-President, or even janitor in a government job?!  Who would subject themselves or their families to these attacks?  One day soon, we may find our nation without public servants of any kind, it would be just too dangerous for them. I am appalled to realize that recently we have become a country that no longer speaks of "our" President, it's now "this" President, or "our government", it's "this Administration".  Is it no wonder the effectiveness of "our" Congress has been destroyed because doing the "business of the people" can only now be done by "this" or "that" side of the isle "on their own" or it "fails"?  As a direct result of the malicious tone of this " dissent and commentary", without actively "preserving" the dignity of the right to do so, Americans lose another chance to be united as a country.  Instead, we gain another reason to be divided because this kind of commentary poisons our airwaves and our hearts. It's heart wrenching and down right frightening to watch our nation's public media use their power to help hurt our country, instead of helping to keep us strong.  And, after hearing this commentary, I feel convinced that if I were to continue to watch and listen to MSNBC I would actually be "consorting" with a bonafide enemy of America, I just won't tune in anymore, and neither will my family.  I am shocked to realize I actually have to do that in my own country.
KO= 100% HACK
Thank you, Mr Olbermann.
EDJ (egg drop juice)
Right On Keith. Once again you have hit the nail on the head. I especially liked your comments about the puppet master and the behind  the curtains control of our government linked to Ronald Reagan and now our current President Although Dick Cheney  seems to be recognized by many to be the puppet master pulling those strings I believe the more important question is who is paying the puppet master. I think you will find that answer deep inside the Bush Family Dynasty along with their  business partners who have exerted a  steady  growing influence on our government over the last 70 years.
I am a 80 year old lady, and when I heard Keith Olbermann tell the president that he is a "bold-faced liar" in Keith's courageous commentary, I whooped, cheered, and applauded so vigorously that my cat flew off my lap and hid under the couch.  Would that goofy George and wicked Dick would do the same permanently.
Krista:
For all the good it will do, I have written to my Senators, McCain and Kyl asking them to honor the oath they took to defend the Constitution. I reminded them that this is not a monarchy, but a representative republic form of government which means that they are to represent the will of the majority. They are not to go to congress to do "what I think is right", to "follow my conscience" or follow the party line and support the President. I also write to my Representative who is a democrat. Ed Pastor has the courage and courtesy to send me an answer. The other two don't care what the people of Arizona think I guess. But I do write to them often and have even demonstrated in front of their offices. They are pretty thick skinned though and don't seem to mind that people think they are liars and cheats.
Thank you, Mr. Olbermann, for speaking the truth, which is sorely lacking in main media.
Thank you for your special comment on the president, you said it with such grace! Have you ever thought of running for president yourself? I think after that statement you will have a lot of followers chanting Olbermann for President!! I know I will!! MSNBC is the only network we can trust anymore! Love you all.
Although it may seem obvious to mega-millions of people on the planet, Keith should at least once tag Jorge Widiot Bushler as the worst person in the world. He should also bag the daily Countup of the days since the slogan 'mission accomplished' in Iwreck was stated and go with a true Countdown such as the number of days until the Widiot leaves office in January 2009. I plead with you, Keith, to not refer to the Widiot as 'sir' as it denigrates the titular "Madame". I too am an Olbermann sycophant - keith up the great work, Keith!

Olbermann, Thank you! Thank You! Thank you!  God I think I'm in love with you...Maybe you should think about 2012
Olbermann For President!
The President's freedom medals are now meant for cronies. Keith has won the the highest medal- The  American People's Heart and Soul Medal.
He is the only journalist which can be called patriotic and brave in this time of sycophantic corporate media minions. Time will come when this country will be eternally thankful to Mr. Olbermann for for saving its liberties and its values by single handedly standing up like a rock against a ruthless gang of criminal warmongers and pathological liars who have used the scare tactics to grab power and loot and plunder its wealth. We must also never forget the brave executives at NBC and Dan Abrams who unlike the lapdog mainstream media, resisted the White House pressure and supported Keith in this noble venture.
Truth to Power.  Keep it Up.
Best Hard News Show on TV.
Goodbye and Good Luck...
Pathological Presidential Liar or Idiot In Chief?
Why not both? Other than that small criticism BRAVO MR. OLBERMANN!!!! Keep on stating truth to powersir.
If I may offer one suggestion: Please stop using 10 dollar words like pathological. The Right Wing Kool-Aid drinking trolls don't know the meaning of such high falutin' words and don't have dictionaries handy to look them up!
An irrational, bald-faced lying, chicken little of a president named Remmington Steele!

No one could have said it any better, or will for that matter.

Thank you!
Long time lurker, but the clarity of what was said warranted a response.  BRILLIANT!!!.  Nothing more to be said.  My DVR is now permanently set on Countdown.
I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiments in this Special Comment, but disagree with the comparison of THE WORST PRESIDENT EVER to various post Civil War presidents. Grant upheld Reconstruction, and continued to fight for the freedman (as ex-slaves were called) long after the general public had lost interest. The price of Hayes' becoming president was the end of Reconstruction, but at least he had the decency to vow to serve only one term after his disputed election.  Garfield was only an active president for 4 months, although after being shot he lingered for about 10 weeks before dying. Chester Arthur, let's not forget, was one of JFK's Profiles in Courage. For some reason, Keith left out William Henry Harrison.
The presidents from 1877-1900 were essentially passive during the re-subjugation of black citizens in the South. The president who really pushed Jim Crow was Wilson, who not coincidentally is a neocon hero.
Thank god for you,Keith, our voice of sanity in this insane world ! In reading "Blackwater" I noticed that Bush and Company want to control the Mideast (and its oil of course). Iran is part of the big plan,as was Iraq,so President Liar has to stoop to lies to start a war with Iran in order to occupy it. Just, maybe, your comments will wake the rest of America up to the criminals we have in the WH.
Thank God for Keith Obermann!! Do Not Let Up.  Love your worst person segment (Bought the book)but calling out Bush is going to be your biggest accomplishment.  If O'Reilly and Bush switched occupations, we would still be in the mess we are in.  Keep up the good work-----Don L.

great essay saying what 75% of American feel and want to shout out from the window like Howard Beal---but where's the video?
Keith Olbermann is a hero.  A lone voice of truth.  I fear for his life.

Can he sit up, roll over and do tricks too!!

Need to crawl out of that cave your living in, take the blinders off and check out reality sometimes
In what seems like insane negligence of cnn and faux news, there is Keith Olbermann; who articulates what is going on without political agenda or commercial considerations. He is a hero for speaking up in a rational and intellectual manner against the cabal of silence that permeates just about everything else on the air. Kudos to msnbc for having the insight to let Keith do what he does so well. He gives a voice to the jaw-dropped masses, who are so tired of the silence and the silent witnesses who fail to report what is really going on.
