NV, SC, KO & You

Posted: Saturday, January 19, 2008 1:43 PM by Countdown

We're here folks...big day in politics and Keith be live all night (from 6p to 10p et) with Chris Matthews and all the rest of the best team in politics.  So far we know Mitt Romney has taken the Nevada Caucus (apparently the Mormons came up big for Mitt, and Ron Paul is running second).  We have the SC GOP primary and Nevada Dem Caucus yet to call so stay with us!

****Update***** One of the more interesting stories unfolding today is the Bill Clinton claim of voter suppression by the Culinary Workers Union. TPM Election Central has the story, and the audio of the Clinton claim.

I was very pleased to hear Keith apologize for the guy from Huffington who called Edwards a loser.  I am so tired of hearing the press write him off.  I am furious over Obama comparing himself to Reagan-one of the worst enemies of unions who ever lived.  My father was one of those unfortunates whose union was broken thanks to Reagan's example with the Air Controllers.  He was forced to retire early, choosing starvation or giving up my mother's share of his retirement when he's gone.  How dare a man like that be held up as a hero by a democrat and another democrat who really represents working people be called a loser and a left winger who can't possibly be elected by the press.
I want fair and equal coverage and I appreciate Keith's apology.
NV...SC...KO...sounds like a heck of an alphabet soup. ;) It's forkin' cold in this part of the world, so I'll be watching,
So I guess Mitt's faith gave him the victory in Nevada; there are problems with the voting machines in SC and no paper ballots are available --just great!! We need to get rid of ALL electronic machines, go back to ALL paper ballots and make sure every vote counts!!

This election is so important; I find it absolutely appalling that machines are not working --this needs to get fixed and fast!! It looks as though this election is coming down to gender, race and religion –that’s what SC looks like today also with regards to the republican primary.

I would hope that every American would examine all records and sincerely vote for who he/she believes would be the best president and set aside gender, race and religion.  It's quite alarming to me that people vote gender, religion and/or race --I wish our country was further along than that!!

UNITED WE STAND FOR PEACE!!
I am looking towards a spectacular election night presentation by Mr. Olbermann. He is always great on these momentous occasions. He has a way of presenting politics -probably from his experience as a sportscaster- that gets you all excited and chummy. As for me and my family, we will be watching MSNBC if only for Keith.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080119/ap_on_el_pr/bloomberg2008

The AP is reporting that, although he's still playing coy and insisting he's not a candidate, NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg is in quiet talks with a ballot access expert and a campaign manager who once worked for Ross Perot, and may be beginning to gather signatures on a petition to get his name on the ballot in Texas. He cannot begin gathering said signatures before March 5, and must have them turned in no later than May 12. The signatures apparently must come from Texas residents who did not vote in a party primary, and he needs roughly 75,000 of them.

Hizzoner's aides, a bit more forthcoming than their boss, have said "he will delay a decision until after the major parties produce clear frontrunners."

A) I wouldn't delay too long if I were Bloomberg; unless something changes fast not even Tsunami Tuesday will produce absolute results for either party, although there are rumors floating around that Romney has taken another gold in Nevada's caucuses. As I understand it, though, those bets are off when it actually comes down to casting a ballot.

B) Bloomberg has a rather formidable new political presence in his corner: Lance Armstrong, who has become an activist through his LiveStrong initiative and support for cancer research.

C) It wouldn't hurt in the least to listen to what Bloomberg's positions on the Iraq war, the economy, and etc. are, in a year when dissatisfaction is rampant with the candidates in both parties.

I just hope he makes up his mind soon. I keep hearing an ominous Waylon Jennings lyric (with backing vocals from Willie Nelson, no less) on the soundtrack in my mind:

Someone's gonna get hurt before you're through
Someone's gonna pay for the things you do. . .

In the present climate, that "someone" can only be our beloved US of A. And she's been hurt enough by the current occupant of those fancy digs at 1600 PA Ave.--and his manipulator up the road at the VP's house--

It's time for Bloomberg to put up or shut up.

I see MSNBC is projecting Senator Clinton as the winner in Nevada.

Was this the dreaded Saturday effect -- not enough cooks to flavor the broth for Senator Obama?  The overall voter turnout appears to be pretty low.  No 60,000 cooks, for sure.

I'm waiting to hear how the Keith number will explain yet another apparent polling failure.  But maybe he'll make up for it by wearing  that minty fresh tie and denominating one of those coins for himself.

Yeah--glad to see you back here!!

PEACE FRIEND!!
Governor Willard Mitt Wild-Eyed Three Golds and Two Silvers and thank you Nevada, Michigan, and Wyoming.  Whew.  If the primary season goes on much longer, this is going to get exhausting.

God was certainly on Governor Mitt’s side today, which might be surprising at first glance.  But if you close your eyes half way and turn your head slightly to the left -- or the right -- you’ll realize that Nevada’s idea of morality is uncannily close to that of the theocratic republic of Utah.  So maybe no big surprise, after all.

Solving the problem of runaway spending in Washington, and yet demanding a “30-day turnaround on the economic stimulus plan”?  Good plan, Governor.  Solving runaway spending by letting President Bush spend it.  Not your fault.  Bill Clinton’s, I’m sure.
Pam Bignardi, San Pedro, California (Sent Saturday, January 19, 2008 4:33 PM)

Hey, gal--like Kenny Rogers and the First Edition sang--THINK it was Kenny Rogers and the First Edition--Just dropped in to see what condition {the political} condition is in--

Doesn't look or sound too promising at this point--
I'm bemused to see Countdown (aka Olbermann) consider Chris Matthews part of the "best team in politics." In fact, Keith, why don't you show maturity and include Matthews, for his blatantly sexist comments for which he has only now apologized, as one of your Worst Persons in the World? Just shows how biased you are. Go after the same tired objects of your disaffection but say nothing about one of your own. Or did I miss that show? I was also not surprised that you had so very little to say editorially about Obama's comments about Reagan. I suspect had Hillary somehow referred to Reagan in the same way as Obama had, you'd have castigated her once again for being "the first Democrat to ~~~." You're gradually becoming one of your own Worst Persons in the World. Sad.
Getting ready to kick back and enjoy the evening with Keith and What's His Name.....I love that we are getting a Sat. night to have something good on for a change....Hope to have a good outcome in S.C.  I think I'll call my son, who lives in S.C. and make sure he went to vote today........Have a good one everybody!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Paul is mentioned very rarely in the news, and it disappoints me greatly to see Olbermann interrupt them talking about Dr. Paul.  Olbermann says that Dr. Paul only held 2nd place with 8 votes, but he was mistaken.  It was 108.  It's completely idiotic to see so much bias towards Dr. Paul.  Will he even be mentioned any more during this four hour coverage??
Chris Mathews -- asking about vote suppression in the casinos?  Arm-twisting?  Mob politics?  Is this how you make up for your previous gaffs regarding Senator Clinton?  Sheesh.

Concrete boots for you, this time, Mr. Mathews.  Or at least WPitW.
Countdown -- Sheesh.  Don’t make the same mistake of calling it over before it’s over.  I don’t think a 5 or 6 percent difference in a very small state suggests that Senator Obama is “unelectable.”  I would have expected that from Chris Mathews, maybe.  Senator Obama got forty-five percent of the vote.  The one who should probably start worrying is Senator Edwards.  But, as you pointed out so well last night, Senator Edwards still has very important fish to fry.
Fred Thompson drawing a line in the sand in South Carolina?  The San(d) Andreas Fault, maybe.  I think he’s about to fall in.  Better hold off a while on that victory party, okay, Senator?
Mayor Rudy is going to be interviewed? You think he'll let Keith ask him any questions? ;)
OMG, as a die-hard MSNBC viewer, never missing Matthews to Olbermann to Abrahms one day....I am SO disappointed that you guys---like the rest of the MSM---are so conveniently disregarding the import of Dr. Paul's 2nd place (ahead of mccain) in Nevada.  Yeah, Tyler, my question exactly:  how is it possible that even MSNBC keeps saying "Romney wins, xc*hhmmmopsx, McCain with 13%, in absolute fear of mentioning the words RON PAUL (or Kucinich or Edwards, til he came in w/ low numbers today).  Is this the ESTABLISHMENT, BIG BIZ, directing what we're supposed to think?  Is this BIG BROTHER alive today?  I'm prayin on my knees for the miracle of a Dr. Paul/Dennis K ticket!! (w/ John Edwards as the best & only honest Atty Gen in US history!)
Fudge, Keith didn't get to ask Mayor Rudy any questions.
Munchkins.  Missed Rudy Slippers while I was making dinner (September 11).  But I heard he talked about his economic plan (September 11).  Lowering taxes (September 11).

I guess I didn’t really miss much, after all.
AGAIN: at 6:47 ET I'm being subjected to listening to the garbled & empty ramblings of Rooty-Tooty!  Oh,& next it'll be Thompson, or another of the Gops losers below Dr. Paul.
Where's The Truth Here?
Where's the coverage for Dr. Paul who's proved by the numbers today that his message resonates w/ the Thinking People of this country??
BTW I'm a registered Democrat, w/ yard signs for John Edwards, Dennis Kucinich, & RON PAUL prominently placed right next to my big blue&white peace sign.
BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS: Jesus said that.
Re Ron Paul:  I stopped paying attention to him when he made Tucker's show his HQ away from HQ.
Governor Mitt -- you are such a caricature of yourself.  You must have been reading this blog.  You weren’t in MY wildest dreams either.  My wildest-eyed nightmares, maybe.

Governor Willard Mitt Staples Wild-Eyed Nightmare …  Sigh.
I've noticed that even though Ron Paul is in second place in Nevada- I have yet to see a still shot of him or footage of him speaking.  Yet I keep seeing images of the losers- Guiliani, Thompson, Huckabee.  Incredible!  How stupid do you think we are?
Aha.  Some new Keith numbers!  Nevada -- Clinton 51%; Obama 45%.  But maybe Obama 13 delegates; Clinton 12 delegates?  Clinton won the popular vote but maybe ….  What?

Come on Countdown, the blue shirt is good with that dreamsicle tie, but it's not nice to keep messing with our minds.  For heaven’s sake.  Who won Nevada?

Get back to us on that when you know for sure, will you?  Until then, maybe you could talk about George Clooney or something.  Or maybe ... peek in Fred Thompson's "victory" party.  I sure would like to see that.  Party till you drop -- out of the race.
Mrs. Clinton said she was running too hard for commander-in-chief early in the race?  With all due respect, what is she running for now?  Or is that part of the chief operating officer thing?  Delegating the war?  I hope not.  Judging by the past 7 years, that wouldn’t be change.  And we need change.
Watching news coverage has become a practice of subservience more than a quest for information. Again they have intentionally belittled Ron Paul while glorifying their favorite candidates who support their war-mongering masters. Ron Paul's second place finality in Nevada was not mentioned at all, while the pathetic losers like Giuliani were given ample time, and now they finally mention him, only when his numbers are lower in South Carolina. It is quite apparent that both CNN and MSNBC are together in this effort to stifle the real candidates and continue the media debauchery of their creation. It is hopeless to find one's information on these stations. Instead, take the matter in to your own control and find your own information anywhere possible, but not NBC, not CNN, not ABC, and not FOX.
And yes, my name is real.
OOOOOOhhhhh.  Thanks, Countdown.  Peeking in on the Thompson victory party.  Declaring victory a little early, aren’t we Senator?  Only about six percent of the vote so far.  Or maybe … a concession speech …?

Because of your efforts the party is looking at itself in the mirror?  What’s looking back?  Senseless wars, deficit spending, foreign relations destroyed, unchecked global warming, constitutional rights trampled …?

Make the pie bigger so everyone can go out and enjoy this country?  For most people, Senator, the pie has gotten smaller since 2001 … and is getting smaller every day …

Stand strong.  Okay.  But … what?  No victory, no concession.  As Countdown put it … just nothing.

Is it just me, or are these guys just not that funny tonight?  Snookered for sure.
Gotta hand it to my fellow Tennessean Fred Thompson.  He can bullshit with the best of us.  (Me included.)
Chris Mathews and Joe Scarborough with Governor Mitt -- making friends and influencing people -- So, Governor, you’ve got all these medals and everything, and you’re leading in delegates … are you dropping out?  I mean, do you think you can make it to the convention?  Sheesh.  What was that all about?

A more loosey-goosey Mitt Romney?  Oxymoronic … or tautological?
Ever the actor, Senator Thompson is in love with the sound of his own voice.
What if....John McCain wins the Republican Nomination, selects Arnold as his V.P. and WINS...if Mc Cain were to become too ill or die in office, would V.P. Schwartzeneger be able to succeed him even though he was not born in the U.S.??
can someone at the msnbc graphics dept. take the check mark off clinton---i figure if nobody knows whose won in that state , least not till april apparently .....that perhaps we should all wait till then ,
its a small point , but you know appearances and everything.....
by the way caucuses are bonkers , but it turns politics into a marathon prime time sport ,
what fun !
The Pat and Rachel Show -- sweet --

No candidate with a clear position on immigration?  Welcome to the club.  The other members of the club are the President, both houses of Congress, and the American people.  Does anyone else remember that it was Ronald Reagan who precipitated this problem by refusing to enforce the immigration reform laws?

Pat says we’re approaching real clarity, here.  Countdown, did you hear any clarity?  I didn’t.

Rachel wants to know who gets the Lou Dobbs vote.  Who wants it?

Only Romney can grab the immigration vote?  Okay.  But he’ll be dropping out because he’s the frontrunner and has all these medals and everything.  So, never mind.

South Carolina is still too close to call.  Okay.  I’ll accept that.  BUT WHO WON NEVADA?  Late update -- still confusion at this hour.

Sheesh.
MSNBC: Please, stop saying 'NEVADDA'. Wrong or right, I cannot take it anymore! Burn the memo to the on-air staff about the pronunciation. You're killing me. STOP IT! :D
Marcia, Los Angeles (Sent Saturday, January 19, 2008 8:48 PM)

Marcia -- Article II, section 1 of the Constitution says:  “No person except a natural-born Citizen … shall be eligible to the Office of President ….”  So the answer to your question is “no.”  Arnie could not back-door into the White House through the vice-presidency.
I know why Ron Paul came in second in NV. He's advertising on a site called horny matches. He's still a conservative republican right? Not what they used to be, then again prostitution is legal there, so maybe he's appealing to his base
Senator McCain wins South Carolina?  Yeah, right, Countdown -- get back to me in April and let me know for sure, will you?

Hey Governor Mitt -- Senator McCain is gaining on you -- he’s got two golds now.  We’re looking at a marathon, for sure.  Wait a minute, Governor Mitt -- Chris Mathews wants to know if it’s time for you to drop out yet.  Oh, no.  That was premature.  But he does think that McCain can finish you off in Florida.  (Please, Floridians, do us all a favor, will you, and put poor frontrunner, medal-leader Romney out of his misery.)  No, wait.  Joe Scarborough disagrees.  BUT WHO WON NEVADA?

By the way, congratulations to South Carolinians for not swift-boating Senator McCain this time.  Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me.  Good for you Carolina.

Baby Bear.  Looking good. You still have a role to play, plus a gold medal of your own.  Didn’t lose … again.  Game ended too early … again.  Resetting the clock … again.  The process is far, far from over, for sure.  Not what if, what now?  If you only had some money, now.
Rob Fuller, Turner, OR (Sent Saturday, January 19, 2008 9:21 PM)

Congressman Paul IS a libertarian, after all.  But can you give us the web address for that?  And while we’re at it, do you know the 900 number for the Matthew McConaughey thing Countdown talked about the other night?
With the rumors flying about Michael Bloomberg "possibly" throwing in his hat and run for president under the Independent ticket, could his doing so turn into another Ross Perot debacle? Could he be like Perot and take those votes away from the Dems or Repubs? There are many people that would like to see him run.
Anna Molly Saturday, January 19, 2008 9:21 PM..even though the Constitution states no natural-born citizen of the United States can run for president, with this administration having made a mess of our Constitution, couldn't someone conceivably come along and turn that part of the Constitution on it's ear and change that for their benefit?
Reporting since early this afternoon Romney won the delegates for his party should have been saved until the people voted. So much for the media keeping quiet until the voters had their say. This kind of stuff just has to stop.
" I know why Ron Paul came in second in NV. He's advertising on a site called horny matches. He's still a conservative republican right? Not what they used to be, then again prostitution is legal there, so maybe he's appealing to his base

Rob Fuller, Turner, OR (Sent Saturday, January 19, 2008 9:21 PM)"

What self-respecting prostitute would take money from Ron Paul, except maybe in exchange for professional services. Or are prostitutes and politicians like physicians, who exchange service gratis as a professional courtesy?
Concrete boots for you, this time, Mr. Mathews.  Or at least WPitW.
Anna Molly (: (Sent Saturday, January 19, 2008 6:30 PM)

I second that motion Anna Molly --you are just too funny on these "historic" days or nights --keep it up please -just too funny!! Mitt's gold’s and silvers are "almost" more annoying than he is --and that's pretty darn annoying!!

Congratulations Senator Hillary Clinton!! Everyone had a chance to vote; the casino workers SHOULD have been allowed to vote; I am glad the court ruled as they did; this also solidifies your victory there Senator Clinton, as no one can say "the union and/or shift workers at the casinos could not vote!!

In California, employers are legally required to give ALL employees time off to vote; I don't know if this is true in all states laws; however, if not, I would encourage all citizens of states that do not have this law to petition for a proposition to force it to be signed into law!!

EVERYONE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO VOTE!!

UNITED WE STAND FOR PEACE!!
John McCain -- no cue cards tonight, Senator.  Mack is back, apparently.

Across the finish line first?  A gold medal tonight, for sure.

Not just fair-weather friends?  What?  Forgive them, maybe, but don’t forget 2000.  And keep watching your back.

Reduce taxes, less government, less regulation.  Ho. Hum.

You’re telling people the truth?  Don’t tell people that.  They won’t believe you, even if it's true.

Oh, well, if the winner in South Carolina is the party nominee, then maybe Governor Mitt should drop out.  If only we had known it was that easy.  See you, Governor Mitt.

Not running to be somebody, but to do something.  Let’s hope the “something” is not to keep us in Iraq forever.

We are the captains of our fate.  Keep our courage, for sure.
Just one more thing, MSNBC -- WHO WON NEVADA?
Laura in Los Angeles (Sent Saturday, January 19, 2008 10:01 PM)

I agree; but sadly, I think with the margin that Willard won by –it was huge, Mr. Gold & Silver would have won anyway --the Mormon vote was 25% --that's a pretty big slice of the pie.  Like I said above, I hope people set aside gender, race and religion; they examine all records and vote for whom he/she sincerely believes is the best candidate!!

In Nevada, the economy was number one; immigration was number two and DESPICABLY (in my opinion), the Iraq war was number three.

I also think this is what has been hurting Senator Obama; he’s hands down the best orator of ALL of the candidates; however, it’s hard to give one of his masterful inspirational speeches on the economy –since this took front and center stage, his speeches have not been inspiring, which is such a strength for him.  I believe the Iraq war should be front and center and is with me; however, not in the rest of the nation and in Nevada, the economy has been hit the worst in all categories –unemployment, home foreclosures and mass lay offs.  Bill Clinton was able to turn any speech into an inspirational masterpiece –I believe if Senator Obama can do the same, which he has not yet but certainly has the talent to, he will do better.

UNITED WE STAND FOR PEACE!!

Anna Molly (: goodnight gracie -- go, Pack, go (Sent Saturday, January 19, 2008 10:15 PM)

Oh Senator McCain thinks it's funny; remember when he "doubled down" when asked if we would be there for 50 years?  He stated, "How about a hundred?" That was just despicable --no one should EVER use our troops as a punch line --McCain has changed so much I don't recognize the man --I guess he figured he had to sell out to win --well, he just did in SC!! But at what cost?  Selling his soul!!

UNITED WE STAND FOR PEACE!!
Sen. McCain really read the teleprompter well tonight.  Very inspiring for the robot bloc.
couldn't someone conceivably come along and turn that part of the Constitution on it's ear and change that for their benefit? Laura in Los Angeles (Sent Saturday, January 19, 2008 9:54 PM)

Hi Laura -- Sure they could.  I’m counting on it, in fact.  That and martial law.  Coming soon to a former democracy near you.  After all, they’ve packed the Supreme Court, so whatever they do now is pretty much up to them.  I know, I know, ever the optimist.  Glad to see I’m not alone.  Being a conspiracy theorist can be such a lonely number.
WHO WON NEVADA?
