Countdown Monday: Passing the Torch

From Kenya to Camelot:  And 47 years and eight days since John Fitzgerald Kennedy guaranteed himself -- if he had not guaranteed that place previously -- a place among America's greatest political speakers. "And so my fellow Americans," he said, at his inauguration 47 Januarys ago, "ask not what your country can do for you -- ask what you can do for your country; My fellow citizens of the world -- ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do, for the freedom of man." It can be argued that since President Kennedy's assassination, this nation has sought a successor -- some saw the late leader's younger own brother as that man; for a time after his death in 1968, the last of the Kennedy brothers, Ted, was considered. Today, in our fifth story on the Countdown: accurately or not, successfully or not, marked the second stage of a campaign to present Senator Barock Obama of Illinois as that successor.

Florida, Florida, FloridaHints tonight from Rudy Giuliani that he could pack it in -- as early as Wednesday, after the Florida Republican Primary. Part of our fourth story on the Countdown... The first part: the other Florida Primary. Huh? After losing South Carolina Saturday night, Senator Hillary Clinton declared that she was looking ahead to the 24 different primaries and caucuses happening over the next nine days. But she only singled out two by name. American Samoa - which has a grand total of three delegates. And Florida - which has none. Or... 210. Senator Clinton's push to put the seventeen and a half dozen disenfranchised delegates from Florida -- plus 156 more from Michigan -- back in play. Even though the Democratic party has repeatedly stated that won't happen unless there is already a nominee.

ODDBALL: Push ups at the beauty contest, and the muddiest race ever.

The Real State of the UnionAccording to Republicans, when the current law defining federal wiretapping authority expires on Friday, it will unleash "the terrorists." But today, Senate Republicans voted against pushing that day back to March. In the foreign surveillance, or "FISA" battle, Democrats wanted to extend the FISA authority another 30 days... seeking time to block immunity for the telecom companies who helped Mr. Bush with his warrantless wiretaps.

Worsts:  Only time for worsties, so.....

WORST PERSON IN THE WORLDMary Katharine Ham, Karl Rove, and Glenn Beck vie for tonight's top honors.

The Final Address:   Our number one story on the Countdown... the final State of the Union address... by President Bush. In a fitting bit of symbolism, we begin by telling you what will happen afterwards. Chris Matthews and I will bring you the Democrats' response by Governor Sibelius of Kansas. And our interview guests are scheduled to include, Senators Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, John McCain, and Jim Webb -- and many others.

the internet, steam?  Man I love this show.
“Mr. Bill” really stuck his foot in it, didn’t he! Me thinks he won’t be quite as…um…”vocal” in the future, or maybe Senator Clinton will try a little harder to reign him in. I wonder what made RFK’s kids endorse her? So, “winners” can say anything they want, at least according to Craig Crawford? Uh…I don’t know about that, and I usually agree with most of what Mr. Crawford has to say. What President Clinton had to say on Saturday made me VERY UNCOMFORTABLE.

All right…who came up with “Little Miss Sunshine State”? Man, I LOVE that movie. However, I DO NOT see Senator Clinton helping to push a VW van. Man, this FL and MI stuff is leaving a really bad taste in my mouth. Y’all better not be getting my hopes up about “Mayor Rudy” exiting stage left! He can always go back to profiteering off 9/11.

It’s nice to know that telecomm companies are more important than our nation’s safety. These Neocon Rethugs are really forked in the head, aren’t they! And, there’s actual GOP candidates saying to keep doing what we’ve been doing in “the war on terror.”  Abso-damn-lutely amazing…

Well, at least this portion of the “long national nightmare” will be over.  Of course, Americans will keep dying in harm’s way. Condi Rice as VP? Are you freakin’ kidding me?! Chris Matthews FOS again!
Wow What a lineup you rascal!

Lets not forget who got the USA into the Economic problems we are experiencing today it was good old BILL CLINTON when he signed the law that let banks invest in securities and commodities.
Mr. President, your idea of "debate" has been "My way or the highway"!!
J Alter hates the Clintons so why is he the go to guy?

Sorry about the Kennedy endorsement, I think this will hurt Obama if he gets the nomination, because Kennedy is not really liked through-out this country, the republicans already have so much to nail Obama on this will just ad to the list.  Kennedy is not above dirty politics.  Guess he forgot all about how Bill Clinton helped him keep his seat when he almost lost it.  Obama keeps saying its the past vs. the future, but really I just want to get through the present.  How about electing someone who can deal with that and leave the vision thing to the individual.  I want someone who can run this government for a change.  A grown up who can do the job.  Obama can't even keep track of his notes?  Give me a break.  Practical must outweigh airy rhetoric.
#5 -- "Some men see things as they are and say 'Why?' I dream things that never were and say, 'Why not?'”

~ Edward M. Kennedy, paraphrasing Robert F. Kennedy, paraphrasing George Bernard Shaw)

A message of HOPE, for sure.  Yes we can.

#4 -- I guess all this just goes to show that a promise among politicians is more than a little bit like honor among thieves.

Bushed!  I’ve been trying to tell you, Countdown -- That photo in Mukasey’s office is just a test model.  Pretty soon Congress will pass a bill mandating a photo of Orwell in every home.  Clarity refers to the quality of the surveillance video taken by the camera behind it.

#3 -- Hey Countdown -- I'm confused.  How does anyone know we haven’t caught the terrorists since the interrogators didn’t know who they were interrogating?  Sheesh.

#1 -- Success is continuing the war.  Aha!  At last we come to the heart of the matter.  War really is peace.  Turns out Orwell was always right.

Pre State of the Union report -- Condoleezza Rice is likable and impressive?  Well.  Mr. Mathews, with all due respect, Red Queen wants to know if you had the mushrooms for lunch.
Our president cares about "the sanctity of life" if you're an embryo. If you're in the American armed services spending your second, third, or fourth tour in Iraq, well, you're SOL & JWF.
I'm not a huge fan of Speaker Pelosi, but NO ONE should have to sit that long next to the Dictator-Wanna-Be. And, how can we "deliver justice" to those responsible for the 9/11 attacks when American forces ARE NOT WHERE THOSE WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR 9/11 ARE?!
Our president cares about "the sanctity of life" if you're an embryo. If you're in the American armed services spending your second, third, or fourth tour in Iraq, well, you're SOL & JWF.
Krista Swisher, Indianapolis, IN (Sent Monday, January 28, 2008 9:35 PM)

Well said Krista; you nailed it!! I just cannot watch President Stupid; I'll have to watch Keith's re-run later --just got home. I refuse to watch or listen to the criminal in the White House!!

B A is right; the "war" needs to be front and center again --I want our troops home!! Thank you B A for you wonderful post earlier!!

PEACE!!
Um, Keith,
For those of us who still want some accurate, full, objective or at least alternative interpretations: you failed to mention that Obama has been advertising, against the "word" or "spirit" of the pledge, in Florida.  Furthermore, Clinton's statement starting this whole seating delegates thing clearly states that IF SHE WINS THE NOMINATION, she would ask for the FL and MI delegates to count.  I didn't hear one word about positive motives, just an off-handed slam that the ends justify the means.  CONTEXT and the full background facts matter.  The media's not even pretending to be objective in its love-fest.  I haven't decided whom to vote for yet, but I already resent the coverage pushing the narrative down our throats, as it did with its darling Bush in '00 and '04.  So far, it's beyond pathetic, irresponsible, and outright anti-journalistic.

When Pat Buchanan is the only one offering another possible interpretation to the meaning of South Carolina on Saturday night, MSNBC has reached a new low.  Who knows how much more terrible the hyperbole would have been if Chris Matthews had been there.  Competely unwatchable.
The "surge forces sent to Iraq" were scheduled to come home any way! And, how's that political situation there in Iraq, Mr. President? The purpose of the surge, in YOUR OWN WORDS, was to "give breathing space" for political progress. Um...can someone tell me where that might be?
Pam Bignardi, San Pedro, California (Sent Monday, January 28, 2008 9:41 PM) The things I'll do for Newsholers... ;) Well, I did get up to feed my cats. Like I said above, we can at least be comforted in the fact that this portion of "our long national nightmare" will be over soon.
I think I might puke,  he is so full of sh*t.  How many lies will he tell tonight?  Too many to count I am sure.
So...uh...Keith...how much time can you spend tomorrow night debunking this compost material coming from DC tonight?
Pam,9:41pm
I can stand neither to look at nor to listen to the Occupant of the White House.
File it under cruel & unusual punishment.
"The Decider" has just reiterated that protection for telecomms is more important than our safety. Less than half the House gave him a "standing O" on that point. Go figure...
Too bad, Mr. President, that you've rendered that document that begins "We, the People" pretty much meaningless.
"A greatest hit of unfinished symphonies..." That reference was faboo, Keith!
Great State of the Union by the President!  Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann are the biggest idiots on TV.  Pam and Krista......you wouldn't understand anything he said because your heads are clouded by your own idiosy. Your negativity is a reflection of the way you live your lives.  That's too bad.
I understand the "HORROR SHOW" is over; I can now turn on my TV and watch Keith's summation of President Stupid's lies!!

For all of you that had the courage to stomach President Stupid, my hats off to you --for you are by far better people than me!!

PEACE & GOD HELP US THROUGH THIS YEAR!!
Darn! I wanted Senators Clinton and Obama to appear together! ;) THAT would've been entertainment of the highest order.
This wasn't business as usual:  this was BS as usual.
Mark, AZ (Sent Monday, January 28, 2008 10:13 PM) As you so eloquently stated earlier today, my life is just fine. I need neither your sympathy nor your concern. If you know any soldiers' families who have loved ones in harm's way, give your sympathy and concern to them. If they have children, offer to watch them so the parents can have time to themselves. Offer to do errands for them. Or, just listen to their fears or to whatever they have to say.
I missed the name of Obama's supporter who led Clinton's impeachment.  Did I really hear that on tonight's broadcast?
Krista.....I wasn't giving you any sympathy at all.  Not sure where that came from.
I didn't watch the SOFTU address    Were there any standing ovations????   Boos??  Hissssses??
For those of you who feel that President Bush has disregarded the Constitution, please remember that he is only following the example set by previous presidents and congress of the times(democrats all) who disregarded and trashed the part of the constitution that they felt was in their way.
Keith - You seeem to obsess over other men O'Reilley and Obama specifically. I have also noticed that the only women you give similar air time to are Brittany, Paris, and Lindsay. What's up?
Linda Becker, Toledo, OH (Sent Monday, January 28, 2008 9:51 PM)

Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you for this. I am less than enthralled with the Clintons at the moment (that Florida delegate nonsense has put me off) but it's a sad day for politics when someone is so hammered for stating facts. Are we that inured to lying politicians that bald facts wound our delicate constitutions?

In re Gov Sebilius' response -- more challenging than watching paint dry, more controversial than credit or debit, more stimulating than a vanilla popsicle. Perhaps she could read a few volumes of The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire next time, to add some drama. Send in the swans, please.
One note about #3 in the Countdown:  FISA is not set to expire on Feb 1 but the Protect America Act provision is.  Our "intelligence" agencies will still have the ability to pursue the bad guys but just under the current version of the FISA law without some of the more dubious provisions in the Protect America Act.
"I didn't watch the SOFTU address    Were there any standing ovations????   Boos??  Hissssses??"
THF (Sent Monday, January 28, 2008 10:36 PM)

I dunno -- I watched WWE wrestling, cause I needed some intellectual stimulation.
Mark, AZ (Sent Monday, January 28, 2008 10:13 PM)

Ditto what Krista said!! Also, your posts lack any substance; they're full of sweeping generalizations --all of which is wrong; they are filled with bigotry, racism and hate!!

Any criticism from you Mark, I take as one of the greatest compliments of my life --therefore, thank you!!

GOD HELP US GET THROUGH THIS LAST YEAR!!

File it under cruel & unusual punishment.
Nanalinda, San Antonio, TX (Sent Monday, January 28, 2008 9:58 PM)

Agreed; those 24%ers who still support President Stupid; those who put their blinders on and ignore his glaring incompetence and his IQ that is in negatives --should be forced to listen to all of his speeches once a day for the remainder of their lives!!

PEACE & GOD HELP US SURVIVE THIS LAST YEAR!!

Oh, Senator Webb's on --I like him --how refreshing to hear an intelligent person speak after the highlights I have just watched of President Stupid's BS!! Go Senator Webb; bring our troops home; in my opnion sir, you rock!!

PEACE TO YOU SENATOR WEBB!!
Mo Hammond (Sent Monday, January 28, 2008 10:50 PM)

As usual, excellent post Mo!! Therefore, thank you; thank you and thank you!!

You have such a way of analyzing things --it's truly remarkable!!

PEACE!!
Purely internal failure here:  how come Chris and Tim didn't get the ugly purple tie memo, but Jon Alter, the Big Man and Brian did?
You and Craig Crawford did a fair analysis of Bill Clinton, Keith, instead of the pile on we saw on the other news programs.

Note to Chris M. - Condoleezza Rice is NOT likeable!!!!

John (Sent Monday, January 28, 2008 10:47 PM)

NO president has EVER done to our Constitution what George W. Bush has done sir –for Fascist-In-Chief has destroyed it!! And if you truly believe this, does that make right what George W. Bush has done?

PLEASE!! GET REAL!!
Mo Hammond (Sent Monday, January 28, 2008 10:50 PM)

Maybe Gov. Sibelius and Dana Perino could attend elocution lessons together.  Bipartisan continuing education.
Father - Daughter Talk
A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favor of higher taxes to support more government programs; in other words, redistribution of wealth.
She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch Republican, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.
One day, she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich, and the need for more government programs. The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professor had to be the truth, and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking how she was doing in school.
Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn't even have time for a boyfriend, and didn't really have many college friends either because she spent all her time studying.
Her father listened, then asked, "How is your friend Audrey doing?" She replied, "Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies, and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so popular on campus; college for her is a blast. She's always invited to all the parties, and lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes because she's too hung over."
Her father asked her, "Why don't you go to the Dean's office and ask him to deduct a 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend Audrey, who only has a 2.0? That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA, and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA."
The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily fired back, "That's a crazy idea! How would that be fair? I've worked really hard for my grades! I've invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work. And she's done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!"
The father slowly smiled and said gently, "Welcome to the Republican Party."

Linda --Al Sharpton ran in 2004; Shirley Chisholm ran for president in 1972; I still remember the day this accomplished woman announced her candidacy; January 25, 1972!!

While I agree with some of your post; I also admire and truly love Bill Clinton and always, he should have championed what happened Saturday evening; he should have been a proud American as I was.

I currently do not support Senator Obama; however, as an American, I was proud of the good people of South Carolina and this country –for many, many people across this country helped to accomplish what Senator Obama did Saturday night; Bill Clinton was one of those people –he should have embraced the moment!!

PEACE TO YOU AND THANK YOU!!

Pam Bignardi, San Pedro, California (Sent Monday, January 28, 2008 11:03 PM)

No one said that everything that President Bush has done is right and proper. But he is following the example set for him by democratic presidents and their congresses for the last 74+ years.
I find Keith Olberman tired and lacking any journalistic credibility what so ever.
Mark, AZ (Sent Monday, January 28, 2008 11:11 PM)

Unfortunately, Obama may be worthy of the Jack Kennedy mantel, but is that what this country needs?

With all due respect to Caroline and Ted Kennedy,  Jack Kennedy continues to be one of the most over-rated presidents in American history.  Like Ronald Reagan and--until recently-- George Bush,  Kennedy was a wildly popular cheer-leader, whose "contributions" were more mythic than real.
>
> His lukewarm approach to the "negro problem" in no way compares with Johnson's strident efforts towards Civil Right's legislation.  His youthful naivete and arrogance plunged us into Cuban Missile Crisis and the Bay of Pigs fiasco.  His bungling in Vietnam left an impossible mess for the presidents that followed.
>
> Don't mistake me.  John Kennedy was assassinated on my 11th birthday. I will always harbor a special sadness in my heart for him and his family.   As a young African American girl, I watched my grandmother cry all weekend as the entire country stood numb with despair. But I am grown up now.  I enjoy a good speech but I understand the necessity of  substance.  As we stand on the brink of an economic meltdown and the Middle East continues to spiral out of control,  is it really wise to turn this mess over to a appealing Obama to cut his teeth on?
>
> Snap out of it America!  We are--in almost every way--in the opposite position of where we were before the catastrophic 2000 presidential "election".  Back then-- thanks to another cheerleader---we had a budget surplus after years of a staggering deficit.  We were still a strong and respected force for peace in the Middle East.  If I must choose a pied piper,  I will follow the one that facilitated peace in Ireland and left the US more prosperous than it has been in a while.   It is too bad Mrs. Clinton lacks the charisma of her hubby, but her brainpower, tenacity and resilience will benefit us more than a slick phrase.  If you have any doubts, compare tonight's "state of the union " speech with the one Clinton made 8 years ago.  We've come a long way baby and it ain't good.
>
>
Before I can comment on the State of the Union Address, I will have to catch the rebroadcast. I for one am glad this is George Bush's last address. I think we can do better than him.
While I still enjoy your show - it is one of the few media outlets giving us the 'truth' about the current dismal administration - I do get tired of your unabashedly taking sides for Obama and against Clinton. YOu seem more preoccupied with pointing out made-up squabbles between Dems than you do between Reps.  The focus is the awful Repub policies, not tryuing to divide the Dems. You criticize Fox for pushing Guliani, then you do the same for Obama.
For all you liberals who want to pay higher taxes.....like George said, the IRS accepts both checks and money orders.
Why did you not have Hillary on your show tonight?  Are you indirectly endorsing Barak?
Linda inspired me to post some information on Shirley Chisholm; may she rest in Peace!!

I'll begin with the beginning of her incredible  speech, given on January 25, 1972, when she announced announced her candidacy for president:

"I stand before you today as a candidate for the Democratic nomination for the Presidency of the United States. I am not the candidate of black America, although I am black and proud. I am not the candidate of the women's movement of this country, although I am a woman, and I am equally proud of that. I am not the candidate of any political bosses or special interests. I am the candidate of the people."

WOW!!

"In 1964 Chisholm ran for a state assembly seat. She won and served in the New York General Assembly from 1964 to 1968. During her tenure in the legislature, she proposed a bill to provide state aid to day-care centers and voted to increase funding for schools on a per-pupil basis. In 1968, After finishing her term in the legislature, Chisholm campaigned to represent New York's Twelfth Congressional District. Her campaign slogan was "Fighting Shirley Chisholm--Unbought and Unbossed." She won the election and became the first African American woman elected to Congress.

During her first term in Congress, Chisholm hired an all-female staff and spoke out for civil rights, women's rights, the poor and against the Vietnam War. In 1970, she was elected to a second term. She was a sought-after public speaker and cofounder of the National Organization for Women (NOW). She remarked that, "Women in this country must become revolutionaries. We must refuse to accept the old, the traditional roles and stereotypes."

GOD BLESS YOU SHIRLEY CHISHOLM!!

PEACE!!
