Rep. Jim Clyburn Tonight

Posted: Friday, April 25, 2008 4:17 PM by Countdown

Tune in tonight to Countdown with Keith Olbermann at 8p ET for our interview with South Carolina Congressman James Clyburn. He made big waves today with his comments about race and the election in the New York Times...now Keith will talk to him one on one.

from today's New York Times interview:

One of the nation’s most influential African-American political leaders sharply criticized former President Bill Clinton on Thursday afternoon for what he called his “bizarre” conduct during the Democratic primary campaign.

The black leader, Representative James E. Clyburn, an undeclared superdelegate from South Carolina and the third-ranking Democrat in the House, said “black people are incensed over all of this,” referring to statements Mr. Clinton has made in the course of the heated race between Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama.

Black leaders widely criticized Mr. Clinton after he equated the eventual victory of Mr. Obama in the South Carolina primary in January to that of the Rev. Jesse Jackson in the 1988 primary, a parallel that many took as an effort to diminish Mr. Obama’s success in the campaign.

In a radio interview in Philadelphia on Monday, Mr. Clinton defended his remarks and said the Obama campaign had “played the race card on me” by making an issue of them.

In an interview with The New York Times late Thursday, Mr. Clyburn said Mr. Clinton’s conduct in this campaign had caused what might be an irreparable breach between Mr. Clinton and an African-American constituency that once revered him.

“When he was going through his impeachment problems, it was the black community that bellied up to the bar,” Mr. Clyburn said. “I think black folks feel strongly that this is a strange way for President Clinton to show his appreciation.”

Rep. Clymer's remarks literally made me cry.  After 30 years of active work for civil rights to see a man I've always respected brand the Clintons racists was deeply disturbing.  Bill Clinton does in SC what every media person did following the PA primary and analyzed the percentage of black vote for a man they obviously were proud of and supported.  To call those Clinton remarks racist was the worst kind of lie.

Rep. Clymer is free to support whoever he wants, but he can never again be allowed to consider himself an honorable man.
I agree with Rep.Clyburn remarks as I have heard and discussed with several afro-americans that same sentiment. Most in my community say that old adage applies that ' a person true colors are shown when they believe their back is against the wall'. A older co-worker told me 'you the Clintons are going around whispering 'you do know Obama is black'
I hope Keith lets Rep. Clymer know that it isn't just African Americans that see the Clintons for what they are.  I'm white and everyone I talk with about this have the exact same view about what the Clintons are doing. When Rep. Clymer says that the current assessmment of the Clintons is nearly unanimous amongst African Americans is to overlook the fact that it's probably unanimous amongst the entire (informed) population!  If Obama were Hispanic the Clintons would be doing the same thing.  The Clintons have no scruples when it comes to their own aspirations.  Never have, never will.
Jamie I think you have this wrong. I don't think that Rep. Clyburn is calling the Clintons racist. I think that they are saying that Bill in particular is using low tactics in making sure his wife wins the election and some of his statement are offensive to African-Americans, in his personal view. I am going to assume that he will discuss his feelings and his statements tonight with Keith. Don't be judgmental just yet.
I suppose that it's purely coincidence that the Rev. Wright is going to be on Bill Moyer's show tonight.
