The transcript of the CBS News interview with John McCain in which Katie Couric apparently misses John McCain's poor grasp of the facts of the conflict in Iraq is here on their own site:

Couric: Senator McCain, Sen. Obama says, while the increased number of U.S. troops contributed to increased security in Iraq, he also credits the Sunni awakening and the Shiite government going after militias. And says that there might have been improved security even without the surge. What's your response to that?

McCain: I don't know how you respond to something that is such a false depiction of what actually happened. Colonel McFarlane (phonetic) was contacted by one of the major Sunni sheiks. Because of the surge we were able to go out and protect that sheik and others. And it began the Anbar awakening. I mean, that's just a matter of history.

As Keith pointed out, the briefing on the Anbar Awakening was on September 29, 2006 - at least two months before rumors about the mere possibility of a surge of U.S. troops in Iraq.

By the way, this is the transcript of what aired on CBS News with Katie Couric after some pretty strenuous editing. (Ellipses below obviously not present in the video):

Couric: Senator McCain, Sen. Obama says, while the increased number of U.S. troops contributed to increased security in Iraq, he also credits the Sunni awakening and the Shiite government going after militias. And says that there might have been improved security even without the surge. What's your response to that?

McCain: Sen. Obama has indicated that by his failure to acknowledge the success of the surge, that he would rather lose a war than lose a campaign. ... Thanks to General Petraeus, our leadership, and the sacrifice of brave young Americans. I mean, to deny that their sacrifice didn't make possible the success of the surge in Iraq, I think, does a great disservice to young men and women who are serving and have sacrificed. ... There will still be attacks. Al Qaeda's not defeated. But the progress has been immense. And to not recognize that, and why it happened, and how it happened, I think is really quite a commentary.

Couric: A commentary on what?

McCain: That Sen. Obama does not understand the challenges we face. And … not understand the need for the surge. And the fact that he did not understand that, and still denies that it has succeeded, I think the American people will make their judgment.

The Der Spiegel interview with Iraqi Prime Minister al-Maliki in which he agrees with Barack Obama's plan for pulling troops from Iraq is here. This is where Der Spiegel sticks to its translation by saying, "SPIEGEL sticks to its version of the conversation." And this is where the New York Times did a separate translation to confirm that Der Spiegel did not mistranslate Prime Minister al-Maliki:

The following is a direct translation from the Arabic of Mr. Maliki’s comments by The Times: “Obama’s remarks that — if he takes office — in 16 months he would withdraw the forces, we think that this period could increase or decrease a little, but that it could be suitable to end the presence of the forces in Iraq.”

The Time Magazine, Rockefeller Foundation poll Rachel Maddow pointed out as showing that America is not as conservative about its expectations of what government should do for them as conservatives would like to think is here with a nice overview here. The poll is part of The Rockefeller Foundations Campaign for American Workers.

"For we must consider that we shall be as a City upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us. Soe that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause him to withdraw his present help from us, we shall be made a story and a byword throughout the world."

The nipple-gate decision by the Third U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals tossing out the FCC's fine on CBS includes mention of a part of the story that was originally uncovered by bloggers - that there weren't actually as many complaints as the morality police wanted us to believe:

The record is unclear on 2 the actual number of complaints received from unorganized, individual viewers. In its brief, the FCC asserts it received “‘an unprecedented number’ of complaints about the nudity broadcast during the halftime show.” FCC Br. at 12 citation omitted). CBS disputes the calculation and significance of the viewer complaints. See CBS Reply Br. at 15 n.6 (“Of the ‘over 542,000 complaints concerning the broadcast’ the FCC claims to have received, over 85 percent are form complaints generated by single-interest groups. Approximately twenty percent of the complaints are duplicates, with some individual complaints appearing in the record up to 37 times.” (citations omitted)).

The leaked HHS memo of a proposed new rule that would require any group taking federal health funding to hire medical staff even if they object to abortion but then defines "abortion" so broadly that it also actually applies to some forms of contraception can be found here hosted by RHRealityCheck.org.

"The Domestic Policy Subcommittee Majority Staff of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform ... released the attached report and accompanying documents. The report details the reasons for severe delays in processing the claims of disabled veterans for their military retired pay. The report finds that poor contractor performance, government mismanagement and the erosion of quality controls denied thousands of disabled veterans timely and accurate retroactive retired pay awards."

Countdown described that report in the context of anticipating testimony by the Defense Finance and Accounting Service and defense contractor Lockheed Martin to explain their shoddy performance. An overview and video of that hearing can be found here.

Mr. Olberman,
If you would be so good as to explain to your viewers what a "neocon" is and what they represent, the ideology they stand for, then nonsense like CBS's creative edit of the McCain interview would stop happening. Period.
Will you? Can you? Do you even care to???
Deceit by omission is deceit all the same Mr. Olberman, there are moral absolutes, there is right and wrong.
I must confess my particular bias, i am an American... only tribe i have Sir. If i stand for it perhaps it can again stand for me.
Peace
thank you kieth for your views and your show its cause of you that i know more about politics i wishe the rest of msnbc would give the facts about john mccanes mistakes and his true voting record some of the anchor people are too biased like andrea mitchell who is biased to hillary clinton and has been upset since hillary lost her bid like i said thank you again kieth i love your show
I guess history now joins economics as one of the areas in which Senator McCain is not well versed. He accuses Senator Obama of wanting to lose a war in order to win an election. It appears that Senator McCain is willing to either lie or distort historical facts in order to win an election.
Rachel Maddow's use of John Winthorp's "A city set on a hill" ideal is a biblical metaphor used by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:14).
Countdown, keep up the good work!
I can't believe CBS failed to see the importance of Senator McCain's comments. It appears that Senator McCain is now not an expert in history or economics. He has taken dirty politics down a different road by accusing Senator Obama of wanting to lose a war in order to win an election while he either lies or is totally unaware of the historical facts in order to win an election. He's not the John McCain he used to be.
McCain's attitude reminds me of a line from a Dylan song ..."I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now." The song is "My Back Pages."
Thank you for exposing this error - whether on the part of McCain or CBS.  Through his insistent comments that media coverage of him is not fair, I think McCain is putting enormous pressure on the media to give him more coverage and to balance that coverage.  I certainly hope that CBS did not edit out that confusion of the timeline to protect McCain from coverage of yet another gaffe.  Although it would not surprise me.  I would be interested in any comments CBS makes in response to this coverage.  Keep up the good work!
I just saw a ~second~ error, a CBS News clip in which Katie Couric says that McCain states the surge was responsible for the Sunni awakening, and that the Obama campaign "claims" the awakening came first.

Is CBS News now going to put the responsibility of the journalist in sorting out facts on the Obama campaign?

By doing this, it has unprofessionally and disingenuously put its viewers in the position of trying ascertain facts based on their personal assessment of the credibility of the candidates and their campaigns.

the "NEWS EXECUTIVES" are doing everything they can to keep the election results from becoming a foregone conclusion way too early to suit their ratings hopes. CBS protected McCain in order to preserve him as a viable candidate, this keeps the race alive.
Keep up the pressure on CBS.  My cynical side fears that other news outlets will not pursue this story...not because they favor McCain, but because it may expose said network's vulnerability on the practice of interview edits.  Sen. McCain's use of inaccurate recollections of history in the pursuit of personal foreign policy is a major shortcoming.
Keith,  My husband and I think that you should run for president.  You should catch what Morning Joe said about "others" remorting on the McCain interview on CBS - I think the words stupid were used and shouldn't be on the air - that McCain was right and all else was wrong even Gen. Clark
Keith,

I suggest, implore, bge you to do a series of interviews/discussions with Naomi Klein, author of "The Shock Doctrine".  And I encourage all to read the book.

Pete
about your Keith Number - as a scientist I am happy to see you using a number to characterize poll results. However, rather than adding the difference to the margin of error, you should subtract the latter from the former. Then the bigger the difference the more significant the poll result!
Mccain is disrespecting christians!!!
I am a conservative Christian Republican and I am steamed that Mccain would use Christian imagery in such a vile way. I not voting in this election period.
