ABOUT THE NEWS HOLE

It's the new award-winning blog* from the cast and crew of the award-winning television news hour** "Countdown with Keith Olbermann."

So here it is. Covering the big news, the small news, medium-sized and irregular, The News Hole strives to bring everything you love or hate about Countdown to the internets.

Your feedback and hate mail is encouraged.

As far as we're concerned, John W. Cornwell can list Countdown as a reference on his resume anytime.

Superman Lets Us Down

Evil Superman: Well I hope you don't expect me to save you, 'cause I don't do that anymore.
Lorelei: Don't worry about me. I'm long past savin'.
- Superman III

You may remember this story from a week or two ago... an 80 year-old woman on her way to take her driving test, smashes her car through the front window of the DMV.

Some called it "ironic." Most agreed she failed the ultimate driving test.

But now we have video from inside the DMV office, which brings us more irony, and evidence that someone else failed as well.

We're not sure why there was a guy dressed as Superman standing outside the DMV that day, but what were the chances that the day he put on the the super hero costume, he'd be on hand for an actual real-life emergency?

And when faced with the ultimate Superhero's test, how would he fare?

Would he swoop in and begin saving people from the wreckage? Maybe pick up the car and fly it back out into the parking lot?

Or would he stand there and watch from the sidelines as others rushed to help?

He's a bit tough to spot, but watch for him in the upper right portion of the video, and we think you'll agree: Sir, you're not fit to wear that uniform.

Oddball: Mentos Bombs & Brush Brush Brush

For the first time ever, we begin Oddball with a historical commemoration that requires... a sound bite.

19 years ago today, live on his hour of power or whatever it was...

Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart -- his life aswirl with reports of prostitutes'n'stuff -- created for himself a unique kind of immortality.

In 1988, February 21st was not Ash Wednesday, as it was today...

But a word that sounds like Ash, seemed to have fit that February 21st as well.

On that note, let's Play Oddball!

There is nothing to verify this, excepting that it's on every "this day in history" site on the internets.

But on February 20th, 1952, Catherine Cummins was born in Clintwood, Virginia.

And on February 20th, 1953, her sister Carol Cummins was born there.

February 20th 1956 -- their brother Charles.

February 20th 1961 -- another Cummins girl, Claudia...

February 20th, 1966, came the last of five siblings, none of them twins, reportedly each with the same birthday, Cecilia.

We're not sure how their parents did it...but we're guessing the kids were ordered out of the house on May 20th every year.

On this date in 1930, the television and movie director John Frankenheimer was born.

And if you exist at the same lexus of politics and entertainment this show does, go watch any of his masterpieces; from the political science-fiction of "The Manchurian Candidate" and "Seven Days In May" to his docu-drama on HBO films, "George Wallace" and "Path To War."

Only don't get the wrong "Manchurian Candidate" with Denzel Washington and no visible plot -- 1962, Laurence Harvey, Frank Sinatra... thank you!

On this date in 1909, Hugh Beaumont was born.

A college football star, he went into acting, then got a degree in theology, then appeared in the movie "The Mole Men," but gained immortality as the father -- Ward Cleaver -- in the quintessential saccharine sitcom of the '50s "Leave It To Beaver"...

Thus he was the inspiration for the hilarious but apocryphal line never actually said by the actress Barbara Billingsley:

"Ward, don't you think you were a little hard on the Beaver last night?"

On that note, let's Play Oddball!
