Sharpton is cheering this move but he has yet to apologize to the Duke lacrosse players who he called "guilty" from the start when we all now know a rape never took place. Let's not even get into Jesse Jackson's public anti-semitic comments about New York City. Where's the apology there?

I don't defend Imus in any way shape or form I just feel that the most public detractors of Imus are the least qualified to be criticizing him. CBS & WFAN are gutless as well. They said they fired him because of what he said but that is clearly bs. If they were that offended by Imus' comments they would've fired him last week. They saw the pressure mounting & made a decision based not on morals but on the almighty dollar.

And Now He's Completely Unemployed

Come next week this story will be gone and racism will reign king on this issue. Where is the outcry among MSM and the public over the blatantly sexist and demeaning lyrics in rap? Or the ugly political bigotry of people like Rush?

Whether or not you like it, in this PC safe world we are seeing an erosion of our first Amendment rights. The more people are forced to submit to the proper speak police, the more danger we are all in. Now, please don't get me wrong, those young women did not deserve to be talked about in that manner. They have shown tremndous grace and poise, much more than Imus. As far as his falling back on "it was supposed to be a joke" that is perhaps the lamest thing of all. He, of all the "shock jocks", actually has done good work..the fund raisers for instance. Also, when is the last time you heard Howard Stern or Opie and Anthony have an in depth talk to any politician except for Mary Carey?

Imus will go onto satellite radio, but the fear that will remain from all of this public outrage will linger and may have unwanted repercussions. We may not all be as free to talk as we thought.

And Now He's Completely Unemployed

This is pretty dang significant (next stop: Rush Country!), but I do hope it won't overshadow the FIVE MILLION emails missing from the White House servers, according to C.R.E.W., or the admission today from the RNC that, oh, *someone* continued to delete Unka Karl's emails sent over their servers -after- the RNC enstated a no-delete policy.

And Now He's Completely Unemployed

How can you fire Imus when Howard Stern the ultimate pig is still on the air? While I agree that his comments were out of line and he should be reprimanded, suspended for a period of time, perhaps come back with a better format to atone for his misconduct, but firing him is really over the top! As a white professional woman, I will sorely miss the morning program with the likes of Tim Russert, David Gregory and others discussing politics in laid-back atmosphere. Somehow all of these types seemed more real, more human when interviewed by Imus. I think what really attracted me to the old curmudgeon was the fact that he and Dierdre took on all of these noble causes. He was really doing something. He was making a difference in people's lives and too bad -- now he won't go to Baghdad either. I have a very bad taste in my mouth from MSNBC for caving in to the likes of the Rev. When you speak of racial equality, it tends to focus mainly on caucasians and african americans,In my opinion anyone who supports ,plays for or buys this teams merchandise is supporting racism,so why hasnt anyone like Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson taken a stand on this? I think if Martin Luther King Jr. were alive he would not stand for this, is Don Imus guilty of racism? Yes,He may not be a racist but his remarks were, but the point Im trying to make is in this country we do not take a stand on issues, unless it affects us personally, did you notice I didnt use the term whiteskin or blackskin, on this issue both races are equally guilty.Im proud of my heritage and Im proud to be a Native American, its time to wake up America, you owe us more than this, and we truly deserve better!

And Now He's Completely Unemployed

Don Imus is not a victem , this has been 20 year's in the makeing . 1. How about the senseless slaughter that goes on every day in Iraq as a lasting monument to a war that started with a lie and the decimation of a civilian neighborhood and was carried on through years of mismanagement?

2. Maybe they can take on global warming.

3. Darfur could use a little help at the moment. I'll chip in for a ticket if they'll go and fix that one.

4. Now that they've won their total victory, maybe they can channel some of that outrage over broken promises to the people of New Orleans. Or they can go ask Bush to explain what he meant two years ago when he used a bunch of big words and promised to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

Or, maybe they'll go for the extra point now that they have the strong scent of blood - arrange for Imus's vocal cords to be severed so he can never say bad things again. Let's bring this one home that everyone could understand, and without silencing our opinions, if in fact that's what they are.

And Now He's Completely Unemployed

Don Imus is an American icon and his atrocious comment takes the whole country too far back to a place in which black men were always "boys" no matter what they aspired to or achieved...takes us too far back to a place in which black women, no matter what they aspired to or achieved were always considered "nappy headed hos..."

And Now He's Completely Unemployed

You talk about WTC and George Bush's failures, but when it comes to upholding the ability to make things right you are judge & juror. I want you to re-think this idiocy as well as what it means to be part of the American family.
Everyone says idiotic things sometimes. Everyone!
Do you have enough people waiting to take their places when you have to fire them because someone was offended and says they won't sponsor the program anymore?
Get over yourselves. The media has become largely irrelevant to the public and this is one of the prime reasons. There is no public discourse anymore, just spouting of the same old things, all one-way, manipulated communication.

What Imus created was an atmosphere where smart people could articulate their thoughts in a less formal, more realistic context. They were speaking to a relatively hip audience who could discern the difference between a grumpy, bilious dude and, gasp, a genuine racist. They were expressing their views in a more uncluttered format, a stripped down version as it were, and we had a better understanding of the issues of the day. Little is also made mention of the types of questions Imus used to ask which were provocative and, frankly, ones that I would have wanted to put forward as well. I won't belabor the utter hypocrisy of an Al Sharpton or a Jesse Jackson dictating to an intelligent, adult audience what passes their smell test. That might be the final outrage. We have gained nothing from this disgraceful reaction except a bit more bitterness and alot more cynicism. Would The New York Times fire a columnist and then do a special Sunday pull-out? I think not.

Now I'll have to sort my music by race, and edit it so I don't get corrupted and sing lyrics banned for white people.

And Now He's Completely Unemployed

Please stop broadcasting Sharpton and Jackson's remarks and their agenda. That said, I never listened to his show, so whether he stays or goes is pretty much a matter of indifference to me.

If a national tipping point has been reached on appropriate language on the airways, then good.

But it seems to me that the media is far more interested in this story than I, or most of the people I know, are interested in it.

Iraq, the US Attorney firings, the missing RNC e-mails, the missing White House e-mails, The whole big cesspool that exists in Washington is much higher on my list than the media taking time for some self-reflection.

Sad to say, the ousted Imus grew rich and powerful over the years with much assistance from big-name guests – a parade of pooh-bahs from politics, media, and entertainment who’ve been more than eager to access his mic. That stream of celebrity guests -- sycophants, book floggers, vote seekers, and court jesters included – had something to gain from associating themselves with this serial polluter of the public airwaves. I would like to hear from them as to how they were able to stifle their own doubts, standards of behavior, and moral/ethical concerns at consorting with an apparently feral personality unable or unwilling to monitor his own mouth. Who among the powerful in his posse of fans will ‘fess-up that they abetted Imus?

Mr. Roker gave false praise for the "courage" of the powers in charge when they fired Imus. It turns out that Mr. Roker was loud and persistent in his criticism and demands for the action to be taken. The bosses withered under the pressure from the people in his organization that were most effected by the remarks that they constantly repeated with the excuse that it was "news". The bosses were not courageous, they went with the pressure and sponsors.

Should Imus have said what he said? Of course not. How much more damage was done by the constant repetition of what he said? If what he said was so aggregious and reprehensible, why was it constantly repeated? When vicious gossip is repeated who is most at fault? The one who said it once or those that amplify the effect by constant repetition?

You said, "Don Imus is an American icon."

You owe me a new keyboard and mouse afterIi spewed chocolate milk all over them guffawing at that one. If Imus is an American icon, then it's of a vile, bigoted, racist America that needs to have the rest of the country shun and turn it's back on.

You also say, "This should have been handled differently."

On that, you may be right.

Imus should have immediately fired his bigoted racist sleaze of a producer Bernard McGirk, as he, McGirk was the one who started off the bigoted name calling. Then Imus should have apologized from the heart and immediately pledged to donate $1,000,000 of his own money to the general scholarship fund at Rutgers University. then he should have self suspended himself, WITHOUT PAY for a month.

But I get the feeling that you would have done nothing and in fact were chortling right along with Imus and the rest of his cohorts when the remarks were made.

And Now He's Completely Unemployed

I have been an Imus in the morning listener for over 20yrs and will miss his show. I agree that what he said was wrong and hurtfull. Sadly though i enjoyed the format where politicians and news people would come on and have imformal discussions with him. I will also miss the fact the he would ask questions that i would ask myself. He used to refer to Donald Rumsfeld as a war criminal for sending our boys over to Iraq, and honestly i agree with that statement. But no one else would have the courage or the balls to say that, they are too worried about being "politically correct". In my opinion, this was a opportunity, seized upon by Sharpton and Jackson to get big-time air-time! Was the statement inappropriate, absolutely. Should Imus be reprimanded? Absolutely. Should Imus be "Stoned to death"? Absolutely not.

I do not believe that any of the fine young female Rutgers players, coaches, administrators even listen to Imus. No, this was the media creating news. Retribution should have be made and the format changed to begin talking about and eventually eliminating this language not only from our airways, but from our culture. Who knows, Using Imus, this incident could have triggered change and educated those who listen. Now, nothing much will change. I fear the Imus incident will fade, but the rethoric will go on in our communities and on our streets. To CBS management, I think you missed a great opportunity for change.

Just yesterday at a mall, I heard two African American Teens use all of the words that Imus uttered plus others, and that was just in normal conversation. I often hear young black men while playing basketball use the "N" word;the "F" word;the "MF" word and the "HO" word while speaking to friends of their own ethnicity.

Imus should have penilized, but should not have been fired. Sharpton and Jackson bagged a big one and no one at CBS had the courage to stand-up.

And Now He's Completely Unemployed

So many of you are missing the point completely. Of course Imus had the legal right to say what he did, no matter how abhorent. You notice he wasn't arrested. He is paying the price for his folly because of the marketplace. There is no PC police no matter how we decry 'their' interference into our discourse. We, you and I, are the ones who decide what we will and won't tolerate. When listeners called the sponsors with their concerns, the sponsors listened and decided that they would no longer support the show. No sponsorship means the show is no longer profitable. He cut his own throat with his own stupidity and is now paying the price. It is, was, and always has been, the marketplace that determines what we hear and see . . .and the marketplace is us.

And Now He's Completely Unemployed

I am tired of this...the only objectionable thing about Imus' comments is that he's caucasian. Blacks call each other every name in the book, but it's ok, allowed, published, aired and record labels sign artists using this same language. Talk about reverse discrimination...no one in the NAACP objects unless a caucasian makes the remark. If these young ladies have as much going for them as you say, they need to buck up and go on. It's about time 'racially challenged' groups stop blaming everyone for their shortcomings. It's no different than gays, obese, etc. groups being made fun of...get a life and become responsible for yourself. My god...just turn on the radio...it is offensive to me!!!! as a white woman, but I don't hear an outcry from the AA community ... and why... it's an AA station with recordings being aired which were produced by AA. Seems it's OK for blacks to make money off their divisive comments, but not when a non-black repeats the same language. I hate Imus but this is an outcry of discrimination of the worst kind, and honestly I'm sick of it. Thank god I have more self esteem than to sue or go to the media over every racial comment made about me as a white person. Enough is enough...take the language off the air all together, or leave it be...stop picking and choosing who you punish based on the color of their skin!

And Now He's Completely Unemployed

Welcome to the land of hindsight America. Because of our apathy the scum of this country keeps rising to the top, only to topple by its own weight. I enjoy watching the so called voices of the people trying to reach the top of the Imus heap 1st. What an unbelievable smell that must be. Unintelligent insults, by anyone, are not free speech. It cost our society respect.

And Now He's Completely Unemployed

Don Imus was our voice, he opened our eyes greatly to things in this country we were too busy to realize. He and his wife brought Autism into our focus and the need for a cure. He recruited millions of dollars from private citizens to get the Forgotten Heros Bldg. built in texas, he spoke to many congressmen and senators to get the death benefits for our soldiers raised from 12, 000.00 to 250,000.00 He also would NOT stop talking about the horrible facilites at Walter Reed....Thats the Imus I know....and our united states will suffer a terrible loss without his voice..."Rev"Jackson and Sharpton..what have you done for your country lately ???? God Bless YOU Imus and thanks for all you've done without the "fear" that we now all live with.

And Now He's Completely Unemployed

The most disturbing thing in reading all these comments is the staggering ignorance it reveals about the First Amendment. Don Imus's NEVER had a First Amendment right to speak on the radio or TV. His freedom of speech was NOT infringed by his being fired. He was NOT censored--censorship is a function of government authority, not private business. If two corporations determined that their interests were no longer served by employing Imus, they had an absolute right to fire him. That's free market capitalism. If you disagree with the decision, feel it was hypocritical, wish public ire would be now be directed at others, so be it. Just don't muddy the discourse further by falsely claiming the issue has anything to do with Freedom of Speech, the First Amendment, or Censorship. You can't defend your Constitutional rights if you don't know what they are. And these days, as our rights are being slowly stripped away, it's more important than ever that citizens be able to discuss and defend those rights accurately. (P.S. to Pam's comment about Rush: I think his calling Obama a "Halfrican American" provides you the example for which you were looking.)

And Now He's Completely Unemployed

Why when a white person says something it is racist not only whites are tacist you do realize. What a proud moment for these two media giants.

And Now He's Completely Unemployed

Don Imus said something that was repugnant and horrible about the Rutgers womens basketball team. That being said, to give him the death penalty and silence him marks the begining of a slippery slope. The question here is if you can fire someone for being offensive, who decides what is offensive?
Rather than being seen as intelligent human beings who can fight offensive speech by simply turning it off, there are a small group of people who believe that we, the American people, are nothing more than a bunch of drooling, mouth breathing idiots who don't know enough to develop our own opinions and make up our own minds about issues. The first ammendment does not just say that you have freedom of speech, but that you also have the right NOT to listen to what you don't want to hear. The firing of Imus is not about taking away his first ammendment rights as much as is is about taking away everyone elses. As a liberal democrat, I find the Bush administrations efforts to undermine the constitution to be totally unacceptable. However, as a logical human being, I also find that anyone else who tries to undermine the constitution to suit their own agenda on the left is equally unacceptable. The founding fathers knew what they were doing when wrote the constitution. All we have to do is follow it, without trying to interpret it for our own political or personal gain.

And Now He's Completely Unemployed

I am ashamed at how CBS & MSNBC handled this situation. I also am not surprised that your MSNBC poll about whether Don Imus should be fired or even suspended was pulled and not mentioned after it showed an overwhelming amount of folks thought it was wrong (were the advertisers looking?). Nearly 70% thought the decision was wrong to fire. Nearly 1 in 4 thought a suspension was too much. CBS and MSNBC was wrong. The truth might hurt so hide the opinions and polls.

And Now He's Completely Unemployed

Don Imus's mistake was simply commenting about a team that was black. The problem with that is black leaders like Jesse Jackson, Louis Farrakan, and Al Sharpton create an enviroment where "black" means to be a victim. You have to act completely victimized. Had the words "Nappy Headed Ho's" been uttered about an all white basketball team, very little would have been done. The team would of said "who cares what an old man's opinions are!". That is reality which is why Jesse Jackson didn't recieve as much uproar about his New York City comments. When did "Nappy" become the new "N" word? People have used that to denote "messy hair", without attaching race to it. These "Black" leaders are the biggest racist there are. They attach the color to the comments and situations and help to grow the list of victims.
