They said the only thing they feared was Keith. Not to impugn your heritage, far from it Mr. Olbermann, but after that brutal trouncing you just gave Rudy I suspect your family has a wolverine in the woodpile somewhere. I mean that in the best way possible. Get 'em, killer! Any of you who are still afraid (looking in the direction of Nevada) should research the nature of fear (biological/psychological/philosophical) and its application as a social engineering tool (history/jurisprudence). If you really want to arm yourself against political manipulations might I suggest researching the nature of persuasion and persuasive language. There are plenty of books on the subject. It will change the way you view politics, media and religion forever. Fear is a terrible thing, but it is a reaction, and as a reaction, it is all in your mind. While you cannot always control the external trigger that initiates the reaction, you can control your own reactions if you are aware of them. Minyamoto Mushashi, author of The Book of Five Rings, will teach you that lesson. He was a famed samurai duelist, a man who knew something about fear. The best way to assist yourself is to arm yourself against those who would make you fear. Make their job harder. Their weapons are words. Disarm them. Even the playing field and enjoy an additional benefit from living with less fear: an enhanced sense of well being and a less distorted world view. Say no to fear, say no to manipulation. Come over from the Dark Side. Free your minds.

Countdown Wednesday: Fear Itself

What else do they (the republicans) have to run on? Nothing. So they have to fall back on the only thing they know, scare tactics. On the other hand, the Dems better start talking about what their agenda is going to be as well instead of basing their campaign on the "we need new leadership" theme. Of course we need new leadership. That's a given. What we want to know from any candidate is where they take us from here, and what do they specifically have in mind as far as future progressive policies that will leave behind the old and meet the challenges of tomorrow like health care, finding solutions to get off the addiction to oil, saving our natural resources, securing our borders as they should be, the illegal alien delimma, taxation without representation, street gangs, homeless Americans, social security, improved education, energy development, improving our emergency responses to natural and man-made catastrophes, gay marriage, gun control, yes - terrorism here and world-wide, a foreign policy that leads by example, campaign finance reform, simplication of the tax system, protecting people's retirement plans, balancing the budget, strengthening the military, predjudice, drug addiction, on and on and on. Not generalized rhetoric as elect us because if you elect the other party you are asking for more Americans to die from terrorism, or elect us because we need new leadership in this country. Unfortunately, I am afraid this will be 99% of what we hear.

Countdown Wednesday: Fear Itself

Whenever I hear these reich wing fascists make these claims I start ranting at the TV. Concerning the comments made by Mr. Giuliani
“If any Republican is elected president — and I think obviously I would be best at this — we will remain on offense and will anticipate what (the terrorists) will do and try to stop them before they do it.”
Question after two attacks on the World Trade Building before 9/11... where was his offense to prevent the further acts against the World Trade Building and other structures in New York; where was his plan (counterterrorism plan) if the terrorist had succeeded ... Meaning he (Giuliani) had two occasions to prepare the city/military to react to any future attacks by terrorist within the air space and ground of New York. The Republican Party had proposed to turn over the Department of Homeland Security to Bernard Kerik.... did the former Mayor of New York make an attempt to “...hide Kerik’s organized crime allegations...” something to make me wonder ...I for one do-not understand why Giuliani would threaten Americans with the claim... that the election of any Democrat would mean the country would be “back ... on defense,” Mr. Giuliani continued: “But the question is how long will it take and how many casualties will we have. If, we are on defense, we will have more losses and it will go on longer.” Mr. Giuliani wants the public to forget that that the now President George Bush was after a Dictator and his soldiers found this bad man dictator and we are still in the Dictator’s neighborhood. Giuliani comments were not warning, but harassment — that is “substituted for the political discourse”.
Olbermann your face reflected your disgust with ignorant mongers ...and I thank you! And I agree with you...I saw the sweat on your face and felt you meant your response... We do however need to send most of our political representatives to repeat 20th Century American History - for most of them are damning us to repeat our shameful past.
Oh before I forget Giuliani (just in case he is reading this blog)keep your voice directed to what makes sense for sir there are not too many people that are willing to let you pull the wool over there eyes...

They think they are always right, and that if you don't agree with them it is because you are not a patriot. They criticize the Dems for politicizing the Iraqi war, but then they have using 9/11 as a political tool for years.

And let's not forget that before 9/11 R.G. and his policies were not very popular with New Yorkers.

Countdown Wednesday: Fear Itself

I'm sorry, but Rudy Guiliani is a complete idiot for saying what he did. The unmitigated GALL that the party that has screwed this country up almost as bad politically as Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover did economically is allowing candidates that are spewing the line that their party can protect our country better than the other is unbelievable.

I'm not the only one who expected more from Rudy here. I mean, come on. What's the last thing the Republican Party ACTUALLY did that ended up DETERRING terrorism?

1) "Operation: Ignore," the days of the Bush Administration before 9-11, : allowed the 9-11 attacks to occur by ignoring the intelligence gathered by the CIA, the FBI, and most of the rest of our country's domestic intelligence agencies.

2) The subsequent War in Afghanistan: Pissed off the Muslims and de-throned the Taliban, who, despite turning a blind eye to the prescence of people like Osama bin Laden in their country, were really NOT terrorists themselves. Note that we also failed our primary objective, which was the capture and probable summary execution of the elusive Al-Qaeda leader.

3) The War in Iraq: Ostensibly to remove a State-sponsor of terrorism. One small problem: Saddam never did anything of the kind. He didn't NEED to support terrorists, he was a big enough bastard for his whole country. The result: MORE terrorists. We went into Iraq to get RID of the terrorists, but somebody apparently misread a memo and set up a terrorist CREATION factory instead of a terrorist REMOVAL facility.

So really, Mr. Guiliani has no business declaring that he, the man whose only possible foreign policy experience comes from driving by the U.N., will be the best person to safeguard the United States and her citizens from further terrorist attacks. If the Guiliani policy would be anything like the current "Terrorist Prevention Policies" of the Bush "Administration," we would end up with scenarios like those in this season of 24 - suicide bombers on our buses, suitcase nukes going off in our cities, and an Administration all too happy to round up all those who could possibly be offenders and throw them in internment camps.

I'll admit that none of the current candidates are perfect in this area, but then again, nobody can really accurately predict when and where a terrorist is going to attack. They're like weather, deadly at times and pretty much always annoying. The question we must ask ourselves before voting is: "Which candidate is going to do the LEAST to further encourage terrorism?" And unless Mr. Guiliani either becomes omnipotent or changes his mind before then, he is CERTAINLY not that candidate.

If one truely reviews the history of both attacks on New York they would see the ground work, training and insertion into the US was done under the Clinton White House and the Madame Albright Department of State. The truth is that neither party has a complete and fully developed plan to protect a free society. While there is constant division and partisan politics in both the executive and legislative branch we are bound to repeat the history of isloationism politics that allowed these acts in the first place. There are only three times in the history of this country we have been highly successful in war time. The revolutionary war, wwII and the cold war. During all of those times the US was focused upon defeating the enemy not on self indulgence and isolationism.

Countdown Wednesday: Fear Itself

Gotta love objective news anchors. It has run roughshod over the VERY Constitution it has sworn to uphold.....Thank you for all your efforts .;..I PRAY they are not in vain and PLEASE keep up the good work.

Countdown Wednesday: Fear Itself

Guiliani is part of the Repbulican politico machine gearing up for 2008. Our elected officials, both sides of the aisle, spend too much time trying to out manuver one another, investigate one another, watching their backs and particpating in damage control beyond the normal give and take of a democratic process. Little is then accomplished. What is most disheartening is the playground arguments and back-biting that both sides are guilty of. And yes, both sides use scare tactics. Sometimes I wonder where we get these elected officials. They may initially sound like grown adults when running for office, but once elected they become little children whining and arguing in that sandbox called Washington. Another disheartening thing is that it seems the more senior members of our governement (who should know better) appear to do the most may whining and arguing. If anyone has heard of the Abilene paradox this may explain some of this behavior. With power and decision making comes accoutability. Our elected officials love power and to be in positions to make decisions. But none like the accountability that comes with the power and decision-making. Most likely prior to a televised announcement by a group of republican or democratic senators/congresspersons they hold a meeting. And the meeting goes something like this...no, you say it.... no, you talk......no, you get up there.......no, not me, you do it.....are you nuts, I'm not going to say it.....not me, it was your idea, and so on. And that is why you see a lot of group announcements. If what they have decided fails they can always say "I was just there but it was not really my idea". Or, "it was a group decision but now that I have thought more about it I personally disagree with the decision".

Countdown Wednesday: Fear Itself

If we elect Republicans that black churches will burn, no fear mongering there. I find the format disjointed and hard to follow. Still, last night's display of outrage by Mr. Olberman speaks to the heart of the problems facing this country today. Never have I seen a political party so weak and unable to stand on its own principles that its members would resort to threatening the elctorate with death should they exercise their constitutional right to vote against them. It is reminiscent of Edward R. Murrow's resolute efforts to expose another such unscrupulous hack so many decades ago. Though I'd hoped the tag line would have changed in the interim ;). And in the executive branch did not the two most powerful me; Bush and Cheney; didn't they 'cut and run' from going to the vietnam war and defending this country? And Bush is always talking about listening to the general's on the ground but didn't he remove all most of thos general's who disagred with him until he found one who would do his biddng regardless of the circumstances on the ground in Iraq? The point is that Bush, Cheney, and others like them including McCain see things from such a farsighted dimension that their minds have crossed the fine line between reality and fantasy; that is, they are suffering from the same mental disease, bushheimers disease.

Countdown Wednesday: Fear Itself

Anthony, Las Vegas: " It seems quite self serving that the only comments posted are those that are pro-democrat or pro-Oberman" Well, those aren't the only comments posted. If you will take a look at the fellow from NV, not to mention Larry and Lee, you will see that they are far from pro-Democrat and pro-Olbermann. C A in Alabama isn't proDemocrat or Republican-he's anti idiocy in our government. That being said, given that is a blog site for: Countdown with Keith Olbermann, it would stand to reason that a lot of us would be pro Olbermann and/or Democrat-what did you expect exactly? I do agree with you that neither party has a plan to protect our supposed still free society. We'll never know if the attacks could have been prevented-it's doubtful they could have-these particular hijackers weren't open to negotiation, and there wasn't going to be any landing in some other country. Airlines and their personnel weren't trained to deal with those kind of hijackers. I imagine that if the passengers/crew of the three planes that crashed into WTC and the Pentagon knew as much as those on Flight 93, there would not have been as many casualties on the ground. I don't believe GWB had anything to do with 9/11-no conspiracy theorist here-he isn't that smart anyway. Not to mention Americans in general just can't keep their mouthes shut. There would be NO WAY that a secret like that could be kept this long. Keeping all of this mind, it doesn't change the fact that what Guilliani said is insulting, disgusting, and incredibly ignorant. I think he jumped on that particular fear mongering band wagon a bit too late. He needs to go more with the 'fight them there so we don't have to fight them here' bandwagon.

Countdown Wednesday: Fear Itself

Larry - Charleston, I like to think of myself as an independent thinker. I look at individuals, not just tow the party line that many of the 33% Bush-approvers do. There was a time (long ago, now) that I thought John McCain was a decent candidate. Another thing I don't do is throw everybody in one category like "libs." Most people are liberal on some issues and conservative on others. Saying that ANY Dem elected will mean terrorists will attack is not only irresponsible, it's ludicrous. Also, I guess you are referring to LBJ's war on poverty -- and that should serve to show that "wars" on a condition or a tactic is a misnomer at best. Do you think that 40 years from now we will have wiped out terrorism, or crime, or drugs, or poverty? These are lofty goals worth pursuing, but we as a nation must decide at what cost. BTW -- if you follow national elections, ALL the viable candidates move to the CENTER during their campaigns. Finally, I'd like to add that during my lifetime, before GWB, I have seen the last 5 presidents do some good things and some bad things. But with GWB --- I got nothing!

Countdown Wednesday: Fear Itself

Hello countdown. Was it not one of the personal body guards of the recently killed Iraqi government offical who exploded the bomb in the cafeteria/lunch room of the government building (in the green zone). Now how do you report the death of the body guard who blew himself up. On Monday he was a friend guarding a Sunni offical. On Tuesday he was obviously an enemy. I suppose it would depend on which day you reported his death. On Monday he would have been listed as a friendly who was killed. On Tuesday after the bombing he would be listed as an enemy killed.
